Maranellos continues to impress after more than a decade, writes Richard Abbey.

cclesall Road has longed been nicknamed ‘The Golden Mile’ and was once home to a number of upmarket shops, restaurants and businesses. Some of these still remain but many have moved on and the throroughfare is now more synonymous with food and drink –the wealth of restaurants, cafes and bars have made it a real foodie destination.

well over a decade, Maranellos can be considered part of the old guard and has built a stellar reputation in this time. Under the stewardship of Alfredo Geci and his family for the last 11 years, it consistently delivers good quality, traditional Italian food with plenty to please everyone.

area in the last few years,” he said. “But we just keep doing what we do and everyone seems to like it. We’ve had a busy start to the year, which is great.”

If you’ve been to Maranellos before the are adorned with pictures of Ferraris and Italian landscapes whilst the open kitchen provides a little bit of theatre. A couple

of times I found myself turning round to watch the chef in action.

We’d arrived on a midweek evening, taking a seat in the window before ordering glasses of house red wine (£7.50 for 250ml)

features around ten starters, 12 pasta and as blackboard specials.

My dining companion was immediately drawn to the blackboard and made both his starter and main course choices from there. Baked scallops (£12.95), served with prawns, mussels, mushrooms, mozzarella and cream arrived piping hot and married

effect. A hunk of bread was needed to mop

I chose from the regular menu and my arancini al prosciutto (£9.50), numbering three and arriving on a bed of tomato sauce, were crisp on the outside and unctuous in –delicious. The glass of Montepulciano was also the perfect accompaniment to this dish.

Back to the specials and my companion tucked into Pollo Porcini (£19.95), a rich dish of chicken breast cooked with onions

and porcini mushrooms and served with a cream and brandy sauce. A side bowl of roasted new potatoes completed the picture.

I tucked into a hearty bowl of linguine mare (£17.95), which was as good as complemented by huge king prawns, plump mussels and clams and served in a moreish broth. It was an ostensibly simple dish but

Desserts can often be a stretch, particularly on a midweek night, but we affogato (both £6.95), which delivered a good coffee hit.

Alfredo was on hand throughout our evening providing a quality of service to match the food. It’s to see why this Ecclesall Road restaurant has stood the test of time.

A selection of local cooks share their kitchen secrets,

Alfredo Geci Maranellos

After being in the UK for two years, Alfredo started college studying catering and hospitality. This quickly grew into a passion for cooking, which in turn developed a hunger to have his own restaurant.

Alfredo has now been the proud owner of Maranello’s restaurant on Ecclesall Road for ten years. He serves authentic Italian food, inspired by his time living in Italy, and his signature dish is Agnello Siculo, a succulent lamb dish which is slow cooked for four hours. It’s very popular with his regular customers.

“This job requires passion and a lot of patience,” said Alfredo. “The reward is satisfaction and not always money.

“I enjoy seeing customers walk out of my establishment happy and they return. It’s a great evening when they buy me a drink rather than the other way round!”

Shahab’s speciality dish is roasted lamb shank, which is cooked in a choice of Karahi, Jalfrezi or Bhuna sauce with sliced onions, garlic, ginger, fresh tomatoes and selected special herbs and spices, garnished with fresh coriander.

“We only use the freshest spices and herbs to make sure you get the best tasting curry and our food is all cooked fresh on order to make sure your meal is cooked to perfection when you order,” he said.

The Sherlocks are on the cusp of releasing a new album before heading out on a European tour. And then there’s that prime slot at a local festival to look forward to...

The Sherlocks originally formed in Bolton Upon Dearne in 2010 with the original line-up of Kiaran and Brendan Crook and Josh and Andy Davidson - two sets of brothers - and released two albums. Their debut, Live for the Moment, was released in 2017 and was quickly followed by, Under Your Sky in 2019.

Everything Must Make Sense! hits record store shelves on 21 February and the band have pulled out all the stops. BONES is the sound of The Sherlocks

of pounding electro-beats, heavyweight grooves, gritty guitar riffs, radiant synths, piano-and-string atmospherics, and the sort of strident, super-infectious hook that comes across like South Yorkshire’s answer to The Killers.

Kiaran said: “Our third single ‘BONES’ is a monster tune! Proper funky and proper

“I’m a massive fan of the European crowds, particularly the German ones, they are unbelievable and thankfully over the years we’ve been building a loyal fanbase over there,” said Brandon. “They’re very much into rock music so we always go down a treat with them. We can’t wait to get back there in April.”

“It’s even better when you’ve got a bunch of new songs to throw in there so picking a setlist should be fun. It’s starting to feel like a greatest hits set these days with all the albums to pick from!”

There must be a real buzz though playing close to home?

“Yeah, we love coming back, especially when it’s Tramlines, it’s an amazing festival,” said Kiaran. “Whenever we play buzz. We always plan the setlist to be full of bangers that always go off the most

Despite further investigation, The Sherlocks wouldn’t reveal if they’ve got anything special planned for Tramlines but did say ‘wait and see’. No doubt they’ll have a loyal, local crowd hanging onto their every word and have them bouncing all through summer. It should be a set not to be missed.
