DO YOU REMEMBER?
Do you remember? ell, something is happening to bring the crowds out on to the streets...it looks as if that bus, surrounded by pedestrians at the junction, might be there for some time. Can you guess the occasion, and do you recognise the location? The shop fronts may have changed but that pub might be a bit of a giveaway! Many thanks to Frank Elliott of Loxley for sourcing last month’s photograph of the Loxley Boys football team. We don’t have an exact year but Frank reckons it can be dated to the late 1950s/ early 1960s. Did you spot any familiar faces? Here is the team line-up. Back row (L-R): David Harper, Ron Hague, Frank Elliott, Charlie Hollingworth, Ron Hawnt, George Elmsall. Front row (L-R): Brian Hague, John Wilson, Keith Harper, Keith Jones, Dennis Gray.

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN elcome to the May edition of the Bradfield Parish Council newsletter. I am amazed at how quickly two years has passed since I became Chair of the Parish Council and that this is my last message. I would first like to thank all the staff of the Council who have done a great job in ensuring Bradfield Parish has continued to be run in an efficient and professional manner. I would also like to express my thanks to my fellow Councillors for their teamwork and support and to our ground staff for keeping the Parish looking its best. A highlight of the last year for me was the Poppy Memorial Trail and seeing St Nicholas’ Church illuminated with images of giant poppies. I attended the opening and laid a wreath at the Loxley Silver Band concert to commemorate those who have given their lives fighting for their country. It was fantastic to see so many turn out to support the project. I also attended an event to celebrate the success of Brain Claytons World War One history project. He’d spent years trying to find someone that could transcribe his grandad’s World War One diary – scores of people had tried and failed. But Dungworth, Bradfield and District Heritage Group volunteer Rachael Hope successfully got to grips with the 100 year-old handwriting. The fully transcribed diary of Charles A Reynolds of the Yorks & Lancs Regiment was presented to Brian and his son Rory as part of the event, to celebrate the success of the two year project and commemorate the brave men of the area that fought in the Great War. We successfully continued to run the Christmas card competition, with more entries than the previous year and hosted
W
an entertaining school council. All the primary schools in the Parish took part and they selected a Chairperson who wore the chain office and controlled the meeting. The children had a lovely time and believe me, they asked some really important - and funny - questions. The Parish Council also formed a partnership with the Sheffield Wildlife Trust and we have had several meetings with Sheffield City Council in relation to flood protection proposals and the large scale housing developments in Oughtibridge. Many of which are still on going. 2016 also saw the Parish Council launch its Facebook page, which is proving to be an excellent communication tool and the continuation of another successful groundsman apprenticeship scheme. I was delighted to present The Citizens Awards again this year, which gives us a chance to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this a really successful event, there’s a special feature about the event in this edition of the newsletter which I hope you’ll enjoy. Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and assistance with the projects that we have undertaken during the last two years. THE CITIZENS AWARDS
Roger Bane, Malcolm Nunn, Vickie Priestley, Pauline Rosser and Kevin Barber
arishioners and Councillors gathered at Bradfield Parish Council offices to celebrate those who have made a significant contribution to the Parish and surrounding communities at the annual Citizen’s Awards. Chairman Vickie Priestley presented the awards to three volunteers, Roger Bane, Kevin Barber and Pauline Rosser, who work tirelessly and with great commitment and dedication to the Bradfield Parish Council archive digitisation project, ensuring records are made accessible to the public. Archivist, Malcolm Nunn said: “The archives are a collection of documents brought down from the old vestry offices at High Bradfield. They had previously been laid in a cupboard for best part of 100 years and brought to the Parish for safe keeping in the 1970s. “The archives range from the 1600s right through to the 1900s and are a unique collection of books/documents which include references to the working and administration of the Parish over the last 500 years. “The majority of the archives are rare - you can’t get them
P
anywhere else, and we got a grant in 2010 to digitise them all and make them more accessible; that’s what we have done and are continuing to do. “The archives were originally uploaded as images but now, thanks to these dedicated volunteers, we are transcribing them with names and locations, which is what the majority of people are searching for. “Visitors to our site are now able to trace ancestors and research social history. Some of the records date back to the poor house in High Bradfield from 1759 to 1847 and they tell you when individuals were admitted and discharged, why they were admitted, their age, where they were born and who was responsible for their admittance - it’s captivating stuff. “We’re now getting hits from all over the world (around 40,000 50,000 a month) and there’s currently around 1700 images online which we’re working to transcribe. It will take around three years to complete but thanks to Roger, Kevin and Pauline we’re making good progress.” “It was an honour to be awarded the Citizens Award,” says Roger.
‘We’re providing the community with a really useful tool. Family history research is an extremely popular project nowadays…’
“As Malcolm says, there’s a huge raft of information being made accessible and you really do come across some interesting stuff. “Some of the handwriting is difficult to decipher, especially pre1800s, but when you hear how many hits we’re getting it makes it all worth it.” “I was looking for an interesting project post-retirement, so when Malcolm asked me to assist it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.” Said Pauline. “The archives are interesting, but at the same time very sad - especially those from the Bradfield Workhouse, and what’s made this project even more fascinating is that I found out my great, great, grandmother once lived in Stannington.” “We were all really surprised and extremely grateful to receive the award,” Kevin added. “We’re providing the community with a really useful tool. Family history research is an extremely popular project nowadays and we enjoy each and every aspect of the work we do.” Following The Citizens Awards guests enjoyed tea and cake. D E E P C A R HOME IMPROVEMENTS EST 1978
Ian Clancy at the start of his business career
In 1976 school-leaver Ian Clancy learned his trade at a local double-glazing company before making the leap two years later of going it alone. A young enthusiastic worker Ian was described as ‘always first on site and last on site’. It wasn’t long before the hard-working Ian bought his first and current premises on Manchester Road in Deepcar, and set up his own window company Deepcar. These premises are now home to a brand new showroom showing off the latest range of products
from tiled roof system conservatories to composite doors. Early success was to follow when in 1983 Ian was named winner of Yorkshire Televisions ‘Young Enterprise - Businessman of the year’. Ian still has the very first door made by Deepcar back in 1978. Still in perfect working order, the door sits proudly at the back of the showroom, illustrating Deepcar’s pride in their humble beginnings. Ian beams “Our aim is the same today as it was back then - we will provide the best products and best customer service.” He continues “In today’s busy world we pride ourselves in looking after you the customer and will offer the same level of service whether you are having a new conservatory or a lock fixed on your window. Ian’s two young sons Tom and Joe, who
show the same hard-working and conscientious qualities to their father are now helping the successful window company build on the 39 years of trading. After nearly four decades of providing unparalleled products and service, Deepcar invite you to view the latest in home improvements at their new showroom. If its experience, quality and reliability you are looking for look no further than Deepcar.

Sheffield sees The Light BEN GREENWOOD TAKES A LOOK AT THE CITY’S NEWEST CINEMA EXPERIENCE. hat’s on your list of things to see in the coming months? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Alien: Covenant, Fate of the Furious? If, like me, you’re planning on all of the above, you’ll be spoilt for choice on where to see them. Movie-goers in Sheffield have never had it so good, particularly with the opening of The Light, which looks set to become a firm favourite with a prime city centre location on the rapidly-developing Moor. The cinema’s nine screens and modern, open-plan foyer are reached by taking a seemingly endless escalator out of The Moor into an artistically-lit corridor of food establishments including Pizza Express, Zizzi, Gourmet Burger Kitchen and, soon to open, Nando’s. There is then a further ladder of escalators to negotiate before reaching the bright, airy and penthouse-esque top floor, complete with decor unique to Sheffield. The foyer includes a bar area, a general seating area, a gourmet ‘Tuck Shop’, the main box office desk and even a grand piano (for the Ryan Gosling wannabes). The emphasis here is really on transforming the cinema experience. Instead of an in-and-out affair, owners Keith Pullinger and John Sullivan are looking to make more of a big deal about going to the movies. The complex allows cinema-goers
W
30 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
to go out for a meal, catch a film (with some caramel salted popcorn) then grab a drink at the bar afterwards, all without leaving the complex. They call this the ‘complete night out’. Inside, the screens are very swish indeed, with multi-coloured reclining chairs, convenient tables to place your True North
ale and, above all, crystal-clear sound and a cracking view. After success in opening the first, all-digital, The Light cinema in Bucharest, Romania, John and Keith multiplied to Manchester, Liverpool, Dundee, Cambridge and Halle in Germany. Their vision to open up cinema culture to all ages and social groups in Sheffield is one that will surely be welcomed in such a diverse city. The business partners said the culture of ‘cola and candy’ was alienating those who aren’t children from going to the movies. Their vision means that people of all ages will be able to enjoy a film with some decent snacks and a drink that doesn’t consist mostly of E numbers and sugar. The owners are also conscious of the high number of students in the city, they are already looking to create special offers and discounts to continue to appeal to all. The project is described as being a ‘21st century town square’ built for socialising and coming together in the heart of Sheffield. A welcoming oasis away from the bustling streets and busy roads of the city centre. Sounds like the perfect night out to me. RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW
Exciting times
AFTER SHOWCASING AT CHELSEA, SHEFFIELD-BASED GARDEN DESIGNER LEE BESTALL WILL RETURN NORTH TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT CHATSWORTH HAVING PREPARED ONE OF EIGHT SHOW GARDENS. ardens may be peaceful places to unwind, but as RHS Chelsea Flower Show award-winning garden designer, Lee Bestall has found, planning and creating them is far from relaxing – and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Lee and his team are currently preparing a garden for the first-ever RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, as well as another for the
G
Chelsea Flower Show just two weeks before. “It’s insane really because we’re at Chelsea too, so we’re putting ourselves under a lot of pressure to deliver it,” confirms Lee. “I’m the only garden designer in the country to be doing both shows, but I’m looking forward to bringing some high-quality horticulture to the north of England because the RHS has typically been southern-based.
“We’ve already got Harlow Carr in Harrogate, but now they’ve just unveiled the new RHS Garden Bridgewater, which will be open in a couple of years, so it’s moving north and it’s really exciting to have the opportunity to show people what possibilities there are. “I went to the Chatsworth Show for the first time last year and was amazed by the

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW
scale of it and the atmosphere. It’s on our doorstep, so I’d be mad not to do Chatsworth.” Lee will be creating the Experience Peak District & Derbyshire Garden, one of eight show gardens to be presented at Chatsworth. The garden will be a celebration of the stately homes and gardens of Derbyshire, and with his business, Lee Bestall & Co being based on the grounds of the Renishaw estate, he and his team are perfectly placed to bring these elements into their work. “The design is very simple and based on an Italianate layout. The gardens of most big houses are quite formal, so I felt that it had to have that formality to it. “We’re bringing a statue from Renishaw. It’s a piece of 17th century artwork that they are loaning to us for the focal point and then we’re going to have lots of lovely herbaceous planting. It’s quite colourful. It will look quite modern, so we’re not trying to replicate a piece of Derbyshire – you can go to any stately home to see that. “I’ll also be messing about with perspective because one of the things that happens when you go into Derbyshire is this change in your state of mind. People go to the countryside for no other reason than to
relax and change their personal inner state so the garden is about escaping to a place that will make you feel better, that is more peaceful and straight lines do that – well, they certainly do for me. “The garden [at Renishaw] has a small wall in it, which is a bit like a ha-ha, that’s almost like an infinity swimming pool. When you look over it, the view almost comes closer and the reason they put those in, was to allow cattle and sheep to graze the land, but not get into the garden. “So there’ll be a mini ha-ha in there and we’ve got some lovely rusty old estate fencing, some kind of native British trees – we’ve got three of those that are quite big, and then under those, we’ve got some cows. These cows are three different sizes, so again, we’re messing with the perspective.” The installation at Chatsworth will also be a nod to revolutionary Derbyshire figures such as Sir George Sitwell, who once lived at Renishaw, and the grand ideas that never came to be. It is said that when Sitwell looked out at the cows grazing in his garden in winter, he found them boring, so he commissioned several artists to try to paint them. However, the artists all gave up because
the cows wouldn’t stay still long enough. Lee is therefore using modern technology to make Sitwell’s vision come true, only using artificial cows. Having started preparing all these elements months ago, it’s an ambitious project, but one thing’s for sure, the show garden at Chatsworth is going to be a sight to behold. But don’t worry if you miss it – after the show, Lee and his team will be transferring the garden to a similar plot in the gardens at Renishaw. It’s been a rollercoaster career for Lee Bestall, who started helping his grandfather plant potatoes at the tender age of four, but whose gardening career only really took off in 2005 when he won a place on BBC’s Gardening School – the garden world’s answer to The Apprentice – but the Sheffieldbased designer says he wouldn’t change a thing. “I don’t regret anything that I’ve done. It’s made me who I am and has given me confidence. I got there in the end!” Visit the Experience Peak District & Derbyshire Garden designed by Lee Bestall at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show between 7 and 11 June 2017.

ALL REVVED UP AND READY TO GO DEALERS AND EXHIBITORS SET TO TAKE OVER CITY CENTRE FOR THE BIGGEST SHEFFIELD MOTOR SHOW YET. ar-lovers rejoice! The Sheffield Motor Show is back for the fourth year running and, with local dealers from across the city showcasing cars from different manufacturers, including one new manufacturer, Mitsubishi at Europa, it is set to be the best yet. This year, the show takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June when 53 new cars will be displayed at Barkers Pool, Fargate, Sheffield Town Hall and Pinstone Street. The show is a rare opportunity for local dealers to showcase cars in the city centre and, for anyone in search of a new car, it offers the chance to view all the newest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include Burrows with Toyota, Europa with Subaru, Europa with Mitsubishi, Robins and Day with Peugeot, Pentagon Group with Vauxhall and Jeep, JCT with Mercedes and Smart, Lookers with Ford, Bristol Street Motors with Volvo, Grant McAllin with Ssangyong and MG, and Evans Halshaw with Renault.

“This year we’re pleased to welcome exhibits from other supporting organisations, such as A Fire Appliance, Edale Mountain Rescue, the Institute of Advanced Motorists and Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices,” says joint organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club. The Lord Mayor will attend at 2pm on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family entertainment including a stilt walker and balloon modelling for little ones, and live demonstrations from the Sheffield College Motor Vehicle Apprentices. Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between seven charities, including the Rotary club’s own charity, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Recently, the club sent Aquaboxes to Nepal and Italy, providing families and communities with water filters and emergency supplies. Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club meets on a Tuesday evening and has a new speaker each @SixerRMC
week. Most of last year’s money, around £750 each, was donated to local Sheffield charities including Sheffield Young Carers, St Wilfrid’s Centre, Emmaus Sheffield, Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and the Alzheimer’s Society. This year’s chosen charities include Grimm & Co, a thriving apothecary located in the heart of Rotherham which runs innovative storytelling and writing workshops for young people, St. Luke’s Hospice, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, Fable (For A Better Life with Epilepsy) which helps fund Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy for children and adults as well as support, Neurocare, a hospital charity that is raising money for a ROSA Robot for the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to carry out brain surgery, and Edale Mountain Rescue, as well as Rotary Charities. Sheffield College (Hillsborough) has also played an active part in the advertising of this year’s Motor Show, creating an animated clip that will be showcased to the public closer to the event, and designing flyers.

Live and direct at Lomas Hall DON’T MISS THE HOME-GROWN TALENT ON SHOW AT LOMAS LIVE. f you were planning to party summer away and didn’t manage to get your hands on Glastonbury tickets this year, don’t despair – ditch your wellies and head to Lomas Live instead. Combining music, food and local ale, Lomas Live is a free, family-friendly, one day only, showcase of all things homegrown. Taking over Lomas Hall from 12.15pm until 6.30pm on 8th July, Lomas Live will showcase music from folk and acoustic to indie and choral. Welcoming visitors old and new to experience everything Lomas Hall has to offer – including an abundance of fantastic local talent, with something for all tastes. Lomas Live is showcasing acts who are linked to Yorkshire, as a way to give local musicians, artists and entertainers an opportunity to perform. One of the main performers of the day will be solo artist Paul Hawksworth. An artist spearheaded by his devotion to song writing and performing, Paul never shies away from an uplifting chorus and crafts succinct, upbeat, radio-friendly anthems. This is insatiably catchy pop stripped-back and delivered in its purest form. Formerly lead singer/guitarist of Sheffield indie band, The Monday Club, Paul has plenty of experience playing live, supporting notable artists such as Sophie
I
Ellis-Bextor and Steve Cradock (Paul Weller/Ocean Colour Scene) as well receiving radio play all over the world. Now a solo artist, Paul is carving a song writing career and is playing a selection of live dates ahead of the release of his debut single. Also performing will be folk artist John Fowler, country artist Julian Jones and 13year-old Millie Middleton, who has been playing guitar since January 2016. Six months later she performed her first open mic night on holiday in St Ives and after turning 13 opened the show at Peddlers Market, Kelham Island. Millie also played Wath Festival this year and regularly plays at open mic nights around Sheffield. In addition to the music, the hall kitchen will be serving up refreshments throughout the day, as well as a Bradfield Brewery sponsored bar selling real ales. Locally renowned David Gilchrist will also be on hand to compare the event. Proceeds from Lomas Live will go towards the maintenance of the village hall, along with a donation to a dedicated charity, which is yet to be confirmed. The full line-up will be announced via the Lomas Hall Facebook page and, for anyone wanting to perform, there are a few slots left to fill. Email lomashallenquiries@outlook.com to enquire. @SixerRMC

Service guaranteed YOU CAN BE SURE THAT CARRACKS WALLPAPER & PAINT WILL HELP YOU TO FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCTS AT THE RIGHT PRICE – WHATEVER YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.
ver the years, many businesses have come and gone in Crookes, but Carracks Wallpaper & Paint on the corner of Northfield Road is one store that has stood the test of time. The store will be a familiar sight to locals, having been firmly established in the same spot since 1947. The business was opened by musical legend Paul Carrack’s parents, Ben and Joan, before eventually being taken over by his older brother, John. Current owner Simon Bradbury worked with John for 15 years and bought the business from him last year. As a decorator who has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years, Simon has a wealth of knowledge to supply paints, wallpapers, brushes and other accessories, such as fillers and pastes, to both trade customers and the general public.
O
56 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
“Most people just come in for some good solid advice,” says Simon. “People come to us because we provide the right products and a personal service. We can get hold of most brands and they are discounted, so we are also cheaper than a lot of other paint and wallpaper stores.” Their top-quality paint brands include Dulux, Heritage, Johnstone’s and popular chalk paint Rust-oleum, whilst their brush and tool brands include Harris and Purdy. If you need a little inspiration, they have hundreds of wallpaper books for you to leaf through and even provide a colour matching service – just bring in the shade you want matching up and Carracks will do the rest. And though Carracks continues to give the same good old-fashioned, friendly service and wide range of paints and wallpapers it always has, Simon is bringing the business firmly into the 21st century. A new website is coming soon and will enable customers to buy products at the click of a mouse. Regular clients will also be pleased to hear that the store now accepts all major credit and debit cards. Simon has also recently taken on new member of staff, John Allot, who is also a painter and decorator, so they can continue to give customers dedicated one-on-one advice. It may look like a modestly-sized shop on the outside but, as two terrace houses put together, Carracks has many nooks and crannies full of paints and products to discover. Customers often refer to Carracks as an Aladdin’s cave. If you’ve never had a peek inside the store, Google ‘Carracks’ to have a 360-degree virtual tour today. @SixerRMC

MUSIC
Music makes the world come to Bradfield… SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP CLASSICAL PERFORMERS ARE HEADING FOR THE SMALL FESTIVAL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF SHEFFIELD WITH THE BIG INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION. n June internationally acclaimed artists from all corners of the world will make their way to the hilltop venue of St Nicholas' Church, High Bradfield, to perform in this year's Bradfield Festival of Music, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Opening this year's Festival on Saturday 24th June is Austonley Brass, an ensemble of the finest musicians with ex-Sheffield Cathedral organist Neil Taylor performing a programme of music entitled ‘A Symphony of Sensational Sounds’. The music ranges from classical to popular and all items are associated with stage and screen so there is something for everyone. This concert will also include recitals from this year's two recipients of the Festival Young Musician Awards, as identified by Sheffield Music Hub. Festival secretary Keith Hoyland says: “We are thrilled to introduce Jacqui Dankworth and Charlie Wood to the festival. Last year the clarinettist Emma Johnson MBE took us on a journey on the development of music from classical to jazz, and this year’s Monday night concert is the first full jazz concert that we have had at the festival. “We are excited to have such celebrated performers and we look forward to their performance and to the audience reaction!” The festival is honoured to welcome the Escher String Quartet travelling from New York to make their inaugural visit to Bradfield. This string quartet was formed in 2005 and has now an established international reputation. “The quartet takes its name from the artist M.C. Escher, whose work represents and inspires the interplay between individual components working together to form a whole. The programme includes Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet. Outstanding pianist Benjamin Grosvenor makes a welcome third visit back to the Bradfield Festival. Benjamin is becoming a good friend of the Festival having given brilliant performances in 2012 and 2014, and this year brings with him one of his good friends, the talented young violinist Hyeyoon Park for a joint concert on the Wednesay. This is effectively a double bill and definitely a value-for- money concert featuring solo and joint recitals.

‘Over the last few years in particular, the festival has gone from strength to strength, building a strong international reputation, which is extraordinary for a festival on the edge of Sheffield,’ @SixerRMC
On the Thursday evening Elizabeth Watts returns to the city where she started her singing career and makes her fourth appearance at the Bradfield Festival of Music. Having established herself as an internationally celebrated soprano since triumphing at the 2007 Cardiff Singer of the World, she will be performing alongside other talented opera singers Nicky Spence (tenor) and Christopher Ainslee (counter-tenor) and accompanied by pianist Audrey Hyland. This ensemble, collectively known as the Songsmiths, perform a programme of music entitled ‘Secrets and Obsessions.’ Over the last few years in particular, the festival has gone from strength to strength, building a strong international reputation, which is extraordinary for a festival on the edge of Sheffield. It has become an event at which world class musicians want to play – even going so far as to contact the organisers to request bookings! This was true of the ensemble from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who performed memorably last year. It is also true of an ensemble from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, who will perform next year, and of the chamber ensemble from the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, who gave an outstanding concert in 2013 and subsequently indicated they would be pleased to come back. They are returning to Bradfield for the Friday concert. The last evening of the festivals on Saturday July 1 involves festival newcomers ZRI who will confidently fulfil the celebratory spirit which often characterises the final concert. Their style of music combines both the style and sophistication of the concert hall and the buzz of an impromptu music session. The group ZRI takes its name from Zum Roten Igel - the Red Hedgehog Tavern – a 19th century Viennese hub of socialising, beerdrinking and music. The musicians give a flavour of the music that Brahms, Schubert and others would have listened to. Schubert's String Quartet in C is re-imagined to sound as it was when first written. Bursting with gypsy and Hungarian themes, the music and performance will combine the raucous energy of the impromptu pub session with the style and sophistication of the concert hall.

Rain Rescue As the saying goes, a dog is for life not just for Christmas, and there are still many in desperate need of a loving home. Luckily, for those animals that find themselves in the care of dog and cat rescue charity Rain Rescue, there is a silver lining. John and Cassie Hirst, of the Old Horns Inn and The Plough in Bradfield, are two of the many people who have adopted a dog from the charity. When their two-year-old border collie Layla died in 2013, they had no plans to find another dog to replace her. But when a friend at Highfield Vets introduced them to Nelly – a dog that had been rescued by Rain Rescue and taken for treatment – they couldn’t resist. The charity, based in Rotherham, is dedicated to helping cats and dogs in crisis. It is run entirely on donations and was started as a voluntary group by Jacquie Neilson and husband Steve in 2002. It became a charity in 2006 and they have since helped thousands of 66 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
@SixerRMC
animals in desperate need. Jacquie and Steve visit dog pounds around Yorkshire on a weekly basis and rescue as many dogs as they can. Although they care for all kinds of dogs, they try to rescue those that are less likely to be re-homed, like older dogs and those needing medical care. Although the charity started off only helping dogs, they noticed an increase in the amount of kittens being dumped and abandoned so they started taking in cats too. Animals available to adopt can be found at www.rainrescue.co.uk, which features a photograph and a small biography. For general enquiries, email info@rainrescue.co.uk. Sheffield Retired Greyhound The Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust (SRGT) is part of the national Retired Greyhound Trust, Britain’s largest single-breed animal charity, which was founded in 1975 and now has more than 70 branches across Britain. Around 8,000 greyhounds a year retire from racing, and in the last 40 years, the trust has rehomed more than 70,000 of them. The Sheffield branch – the biggest of its kind in the north of England – is one of the most active in the country. First launched at Gosling Moor Farm over a decade ago, SRGT moved to a new facility on Howbrook Lane on the Wortley Estate in 2015. Built by Designer Kennels, it has room for up to 28 dogs at a time and takes care of dogs aged 19 months to seven years. The site is funded by Owlerton (along with a great deal of fundraising) and run by home finder Lynda Cattlin and her husband, kennel manager Roy, who live on site and since 2006 have dedicated their lives to caring for and rehoming the animals. Seven days a week between 8am and 12noon, people can visit the trust and enjoy a stroll around the countryside with a pooch in tow. A map, devised by kennel hands Zena Evans and Donna Williams, has one short walk, a wheelchair-friendly path and two longer routes to choose from. These walks have been particularly beneficial to local groups with disabilities or learning difficulties. The walks also allow people who are thinking of adopting one of the greyhounds to become acquainted with them and their habits. If you take a shine to one, you can provisionally reserve them while you fully consider your options and discuss any concerns with the SRGT staff. The greyhounds are also helping to save other dogs in need, by donating their blood to a bank every three months. BIG LOTTERY FUND HELPS MUMS PACK A PUNCH IN SHEFFIELD small women’s kickboxing group in Stannington, Sheffield has been awarded funding from the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund so it can offer free exercise to mums with children who struggle to find childcare. The group, called Mummy Power, was brought together by local mum, Kate Hill, mum of two, along with Samantha Marren, mum of one and Hannah Sanderson, mum of two. They started kickboxing at local gym, Powers Martial Arts Centre, Stannington and applied for Big Lottery Funding after there was a huge rise in local women wanting to be involved. Kate said: “We are so thrilled to receive this funding from the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund for our friendly, little group. I set up the group initially because I loved kickboxing but struggle so much with childcare after work. “I asked my local gym if they’d help. Paul and the team at Powers Martial Arts Centre have been totally supportive throughout. When Hannah and Samantha came on board to support it, there was no stopping us,” says Kate. The group now trains together twice a week and the funding has enabled the group to enjoy two, free 1-hour training sessions every week for the women and their children, as well as a free nutritional course and weight programme every month, gradings to build some recognisable skills, achievement awards and free t-shirts and gloves to train with. Samantha added: “Hannah, Kate and I mentioned it to some other mums at school and we were overwhelmed with the response. This funding means that we can offer mums a place to come and exercise whilst enjoying a good, social atmosphere. Hannah said: “The children have their own trainer too, for those who want to do

kickboxing – they love having Mummy Power t-shirts and gloves to wear. We wanted to make sure the mums and kids are rewarded for their hard work too so we are organising awards ceremonies and social events. The Big Lottery Fund has made all of this possible.” The gym, owned by Paul Powers, has provided a trainer for the mums and one to work with the children so that no-one is left out: “The group and the funding has been great for our small gym – it’s meant that we are getting more and more families walking through the door to get involved. It’s great to see and we are happy to support Mummy Power for as long as they need it,” said Paul The group trains at Powers Martial Arts Centre on Monday’s 6-7pm and Wednesday’s 5.30-6.30pm. There is a suggested donation of £10 per mum for the whole year and a £2 suggested donation per child for the year. This helps the group collect funds for additional uses that benefit the group, such as events and extra equipment needed. If you’d like more information about Mummy Power, see the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mummypowerkick on Twitter @mummypowerkick or contact Paul at the gym directly on: 07831 763688 or email: mummy_power@yahoo.com.

Get it done rite! IF YOU WANT A LOCAL PLUMBER YOU CAN RELY ON, TRY DEAN ELLIS OF PLUMBRITE. hen there’s a problem with your plumbing, the last thing you want is a delay in solving it. Due to the hands-on nature of the job, combined with the call centres associated with bigger companies, many plumbers are difficult to contact, leaving customers waiting around while the problem worsens. PlumbRite doesn’t have this problem, as every call is answered directly by plumbing engineer Dean Ellis. Previously a franchise, it is now an independent local business, solely run by owner Dean. This means you will benefit from a personal service with the same plumber helping you every step of the way, from your first enquiry through to completion. Based in Ecclesfield, Dean covers the whole S6 and S35 area, as well as Stocksbridge and Penistone. “I like being my own boss,” says Dean. “I’ve always worked very hard for someone else and a few years ago, I decided it was

about time I started working hard for myself. As it’s my own business, I take a lot of pride in my work.” Dean is assisted by his new apprentice, Cameron Stewart, who works with Dean four days and studies at Barnsley College one day of the week. Dean is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency plumbing. He also tackles general plumbing issues, from a tap washer to a toilet. He can also design, supply and fit complete bathrooms, including the tiling. Most of the work Dean does is for domestic customers, but his diligent and efficient approach has resulted in him being the plumber of choice for Meadowhall shopping centre, Pandora jewellers, Lexus Sheffield and many local churches. This year, PlumbRite will be celebrating its sixth anniversary. Though much has changed since the business was established, Dean continues to take a vigilant approach @SixerRMC
when it comes to plumbing, putting the PlumbRite motto – Get it done rite! – into action. “I make sure I get it done right first time,” says Dean. “I don’t rush jobs – it’s important to dedicate the time necessary and to use all the correct parts.” One of the other plus points of recruiting Dean is that he is reliable and won’t ever keep you waiting. “I always turn up when I say I will,” adds Dean. “When you’ve got a problem as bad as water coming through your ceiling, the last thing you want is to have to wait extra time for someone to fix it.” If you want a local plumber you can rely on, try Dean Ellis of PlumbRite. As an independent plumber, he can ensure your problem is solved as quickly as possible. PlumbRite Tel: 07949 869348 Email: deano7125@hotmail.co.uk

Island of plenty
WITH GREAT WEATHER, RESTAURANTS AND GOLF, IS MAJORCA THE IDEAL LONG WEEKEND DESTINATION? JOHN MURPHY REPORTS. f you’re in need of a little tonic after being battered by the winter elements in Britain then you could do worse then take a trip to beautiful Majorca. Only two-and-a-half hours away from Manchester, the largest of the Balearic islands is an ideal long weekend destination. With typical Mediterranean temperatures, ranging from 15-20ºC in the autumn and spring, shorts and t-shirts will keep you under the low-cost airline’s miserly baggage allowances. And there’s plenty to do. The island is famous for its beaches, scenic coastline, Serra de Tramuntana Mountains in the north, classical road cycling terrain and impressive golf courses. No trip to Majorca would be complete without a visit to the historic capital, Palma. Dominating the skyline and overlooking the shimmering Mediterranean harbour is the Gothic cathedral of Santa Maria. A vast and impressive building, inside and out, it is famed

for its altar canopy designed by the modern architect Anton Gaudi. Other notable landmarks include Alumudina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress which was converted to a royal residence and the medieval circular construction, Bellver Castle. Perhaps the most enjoyable element of the city is the long seafront promena0de. Take a stroll, avoiding runners and cyclists, and marvel at the vast cruise liners that battle

for berths and the gleaming multi-millionpound yachts gracing the harbour. Away from the promenade, streets in and around the old town are home to some of the finest bars, bodegas and restaurants in Spain. Open a huge wooden door on a street corner and find yourself in an Aladdin’s cave of a courtyard area with locals highlighted in the shafts of spring sun filtering through the vines and glinting on their glasses of local wine. Catalan influenced food stars in an array of fine restaurants. One of the best views of Palma is from the wonderful terrace at the Castillo Hotel Son Vida, part of The Luxury Collection. Perched high above the Bay of Palma the 13th century castle hotel is an opulent mix of old and new. From the moment you are greeted in the vast entrance hall to the moment you leave you are enveloped by a sense of calm luxury inspired by the high ceilings supported by

vast columns, exquisite antiques and stunning, classical paintings. The air of opulence is maintained with marble and grand wood panelling running throughout the castle, with the latter featuring heavily in the elegant Es Vi bodega bar and restaurant with its huge glass doors opening on to the long terrace which juts out towards the bay. Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas and Prince Rainier of Monaco have sipped their cocktails here while enjoying the same stunning views. The bedrooms are equally grand and spacious with fine furniture and fittings, many with balconies offering views over the golf course which snakes around the hotel and beyond to Palma itself. The hotel is an ideal base from which to
explore Palma and the island but it also offers many facilities itself. As well as a beauty spa, the hotel has four tennis courts and can arrange sailing, riding, water sports, hiking, cycling, and even paragliding and parachuting. One of the most popular activities is golf, with guests being able to play at the adjacent Arabella courses Son Vida, Son Muntaner, Son Quint and Son Quint pitch and putt. Conveniently a shuttle from the hotel will take you at no cost to each course. Son Vida is the oldest course on the island with narrow fairways winding around the estate of mature trees, lakes and shrubs. It’s a tough, tight championship course where accuracy, not length is the requirement. Son Muntaner is more open and accommodating for the average club golfer with wider fairways funnelling into well protected, sometimes elevated greens. The newly sown Bermuda grass has helped with better contacts on many of the holes. Son Quint, opened in 2007, is the youngest course on the island offering wide fairways, straightforward par 4s and stunning views of the Bay of Palma, way below. All three courses are great value for money with green fees ranging from 50-90 euros, with the hotel able to reserve your tee times.

Project provides unexpected voice from WW1 trenches
Pupils create work of art to celebrate Yorkshire’s biggest bike race Pupils from Stocksbridge Junior School are working with South Yorkshire based artists Sara Beavan–Widdowson and Robin Widdowson to create a striking piece of art to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire. The three–day race will finish at Fox Valley on Sunday 30 April – less than a mile away from Stocksbridge Junior School. The school has a week of events planned in the run up to the race and the 388 students have been busy working with artists and sculptors Sara and Robin to create a unique piece of art that celebrates the heritage of the local area and this prestigious cycling event. Pupils have been drawing and printing self–portraits and sketching places and buildings that they feel represent the town’s heritage and a selection of students from each class were chosen to work with Sara on the finer detail for the circular artwork. The final piece will reflect images from the creative work done by the children and displayed at Fox Valley ahead of the race. Robin said: “We have been running
workshops with the pupils and getting them thinking about what they wanted to see in the final piece. It’s been a great project to be involved with and seems to have really grabbed the children’s’ imagination ahead of the Tour de Yorkshire.” Teacher David Wright said: “We have loved being involved with the project – it has been a great way to get involved with the Tour de Yorkshire and also to think about what the area means to the pupils and what is important to them about Stocksbridge – we can’t wait to see the finished piece at Fox Valley.” The Tour de Yorkshire starts on Friday 28 April in Bridlington. The final day will see the cyclists set off from Bradford and cover 194 km before arriving in Fox Valley at around 5pm. For more information about Fox Valley, visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk and to find out more about the Tour de Yorkshire, visit www.letouryorkshire.com.
An event to celebrate the success of a World War One history project in the Parish of Bradfield was a day Brian Clayton will never forget. He’d spent years trying to find someone that could transcribe his grandad’s World War One diary. Scores of people had tried and failed, but Dungworth, Bradfield and District Heritage Group volunteer Rachael Hope successfully got to grips with the 100 year–old handwriting. The fully transcribed diary of Charles A Reynolds of the Yorks & Lancs Regiment was presented to Brian and his son Rory as part of the event to celebrate the success of the two–year project to commemorate the men of the area that fought in the Great War and find out more about life on the home front. Richard Godley, project manager, said: “This has been a landmark project in so many ways and I’m glad it has been able to enrich the lives of many people and receive so much great support. We’re now hoping to launch a similar project looking at World War Two.” Scores of people have worked on the World War One history project, which has been funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Bradfield Parish Council and Peak District National Park. Winning at a losing game! While most people would be offended to be called ‘losers’, slimmers across Sheffield are over the moon to have been named ‘Greatest Loser’ of 2017. That’s because local Slimming World members have lost 107st between them to take their group’s Greatest Loser title. Ben Muscroft, of the Hillsborough group, has lost an amazing 11st 12lbs. He said: “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a loser when it feels this good! I feel like a new man since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people can’t believe I’m the same person.” Ben’s consultant, Christine, added: “The changes we’ve seen in Ben are incredible. I hope his success will inspire other people.” Julie Dadd lost over 5st at the Stannington Group. She said: “I was a little worried about joining the group, but I didn’t need to be. consultant, and I was so relieved when I found out that my weight was confidential between me and her – I’d had visions of having to tell everyone how much I weighed!” Sarah Day from Oughtibridge, who has lost 8st, followed the club’s Food Optimising eating plan and swapped takeaways for ‘fakeaways’. She said: “People think slimming means going hungry or obsessively counting every @SixerRMC

calorie you eat, but it’s not like that at Slimming World.” Each of Slimming World’s 16,000 groups in the UK and Ireland has their own Greatest Loser 2017 who goes forward to the national competition, which has a £3,000 cash prize. In your time of need... THE BEST POSSIBLE SERVICE AT THE BEST POSSIBLE PRICE – THAT’S THE PLEDGE FROM I DID IT MY WAY. Did It My Way based at the Niagara, Sheffield 6, continue to pride themselves on keeping their costs low, and they are constantly striving to provide the best service, at a price people can afford. A funeral can be conducted with dignity, respect and love without having to spend a fortune, and their funerals are testament to this. Their straight-to-crematorium service currently stands at £1,760 and can be attended by close family members. There is no service but this allows mourners to say goodbye in a way that best suits them. This service will also be booked at the family’s convenience. Just because there is no service does not mean that the family’s wishes should not be honoured at a time which best suits them. I Did It My Way’s basic service is priced from £2,250 (cremation only), with no other

costs to pay. A colourful coffin depicting the client’s life, or something special about them, with the hearse and a limousine, is fullyinclusive from £3,000 (cremation only). The price remains the same for a wicker coffin, which also prove to be very popular. The pre-payment business is increasing daily; an increasing number of people are
planning ahead as death and dying are no longer regarded as taboo. Peace of mind for families at such a difficult time appears to be made much easier when their loved one has planned ahead. There are no worries with a prepaid funeral, and the price quoted now is what you will pay, regardless of the date it is needed. Steve and the team pride themselves on the level of service they offer, they believe in acting in their clients’ best interests at all times. For enquiries please phone 0114 327 4936.
