Find out why Steel City Skies has become a trusted weather forecasting resource
ello and welcome to the May issue of Sixer. As restrictions start to ease we’ve been thinking about the places we can visit and time we can spend outdoors eating, drinking and entertaining. We look at the art of dining alfresco and if you’re connecting with family and friends over a picnic in the park or garden, we have some great accessories too. To make the most of your outside spaces you’ll need good weather; one of the most reliable local forecasts around comes from Steel City Skies. We speak to the man behind the Facebook page, who also shares some of his glorious pictures. As your movement starts to become a bit freer, we also look at things to look forward to once lockdown ends. We’re talking theatre, live music, cinema, comedy and more. Elsewhere we’ve got your usual mix of fashion, beauty, motoring and more.

BITS & PIECES
Man on a mission When Joe Hellewell embarks on a walk to the top of one of the UK’s highest mountains this summer, he’ll be doing it all as a very special thank you to South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. Joe had spent nine years in the Sheffield foster care system when he was introduced to Roundabout, the charity that works with more than 250 young people every day, providing shelter, support and life skills to help them gain independence. Roundabout’s Resettlement Team currently has 67 properties around the city, consisting of flats and houses, all available for young people like Joe, helping them to prepare for independent living in a semi-supported housing setting. Today Joe has his own flat and a job and also knows that he has the support of his Roundabout case worker Kim, who has helped him through the transition period from foster care to independence. “I’ve never walked up a mountain before but I’m really looking forwards to it,” says Joe, who received a 20 per cent discount from outdoor specialist Go Outdoors to help kit him out for the challenge. “I think if you’re going to do a fundraising challenge you’d may as well make it a real challenge, something you’ve really got to work at. “I’m doing this for Roundabout because they have supported me and given me a home where I can stay as long as I need to, until the time that I’m ready to find my own place - and some people don’t get that opportunity.” To find out more about the Sunrise on Snowdon Hike email emily.bush@roundaboutltd.orgor call 0114 253 6753.
New lease of life The oldest most complete example of a purpose-built cutlery works in Sheffield, The Globe Works, is entering a new phase in its life as a local entrepreneur transforms the building into a hub for Sheffield businesses. The Kelham Island works, built in the 1820s, by the architects Henry and William Ibbotson for the edge tool manufacturers Ibbotson & Roebank, is thought to be the oldest most complete large scale specialist steel manufacturing centre. Renovation works by Matt Davison of Davison Property Investments – a former tenant at the Globe Works – have begun, with the aim of creating spaces for a range of businesses, including hospitality and event venues. Matt maintains that the history of the building and its role in Sheffield’s famous steel industry will be at the core of the redevelopment: “This building is an industrial gem and part of our city’s important past as a world-leading centre for manufacturing,” says Matt. “The heritage of the Globe Works was one of the first things that drew me to it. In our new phase of regeneration here, we’ll be working closely with historic building specialists to make sure that the heritage is sensitively managed and is given a new lease of life. My vision is for this to be a truly inspirational place to work and socialise.” 20 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Silver celebration Last month saw Tufts Carpets celebrate 25 years in business. Andrew Walsh started the business in 2006 and has singlehandedly, through sheer determination, kept the business going through the years. At times, things have been difficult - like any business - but Andrew often worked six days a week, sacrificing time with family, to ensure it was a success. He started the business at Crystal Peaks Market Place and later opened shops around Sheffield, Dronfield and Ecclesfield but due to the big recession around ten years ago, had to close them all except one, which is still very popular in Hillsborough Barracks. Tufts have helped many families around South Yorkshire make their homes comfortable and warm. Andrew would set up payment plans for single parents and low income families to repay money on carpets for a little sum each month, patiently waiting for an income himself but more importantly putting the needs of the families before his own. Many local Primary schools have wrote to him asking for carpet sample donations to use at group time for the pupils to sit on. He willingly supplies and helps out were he can. His business has been a success with the help of custormers reapeatedly coming back and passing on the recommendation of his great reputation to others. Tufts Carpets sponsored hockey team ‘The Hallamshire Hornets’ and junior football team ‘Beighton Magpies’.
Local Community Fund support City homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield has received its first slice of funding from the Co-op Local Community Fund project. The charity is one of three causes in the community which Co-op members can select to support between now and 23 October next year. The more members who select Emmaus and then shop with the Co-op, the more funds the charity will receive. Co-op Members can select Emmaus Sheffield as their cause by joining online at coop.co.uk/membership or by downloading the Co-op app.

But can you guess where exactly he was when he took this photograph? Follow @SlatersAerials on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of each month. come rain or shine HIS FACEBOOK FORECASTS ATTRACT THOUSANDS OF FOLLOWERS AND HAVE BECOME A TRUSTED SOURCE OF LOCAL WEATHER INFORMATION. BUT WHO IS THE MAN BEHIND STEEL CITY SKIES? t’s become the trusted source for accurate local weather. Come rain or shine, thousands of Sheffielders are choosing Steel City Skies over the likes of the BBC, Met Office and local media for their forecasts. But who is the man behind the hugely popular weather forecasting page? That man is Stephen Vincent and he’s not a meteorologist but a teaching assistant at a primary school in the north of the city and also recently qualified as a Forest School practitioner. Weather is his hobby, his passion and Steel City Skies is a service he is happy to continue to provide.
I
28 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
You’ll find him on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube delivering daily and weekly forecasts for Sheffield which are, more often than not, right on the money. Stephen, who also lives in north Sheffield, has been running the page for three years after friends and colleagues at work often asked him what the weather was going to be like for the weekend or the holidays. The rest, they say, is history. We caught up with the weather enthusiast to find out more and, more importantly, to ask what kind of weather we can expect this summer. Clue: you should be ok to organise that garden party.

Tell us about Steel City Skies.
Steel City Skies is a weather forecasting page specialising in accurate forecasts local to Sheffield. Every morning there’s a forecast for the day, with weekend outlooks on Thursday evenings and week-ahead forecasts published on Sundays. When inclement or interesting weather is in the offing, extra posts are published. Do you post daily?
Yes! I write up a daily forecast every morning that publishes between 6 and 6.30am.The forecasts follow a text and accompanying graphic format with a photo background. On occasion I credit and share photos that my followers have uploaded to the page - it helps keep a local connection to the page and develops a sense of community. I’m pleased to say those that followed the page from the very beginning are still there! What qualifies you to forecast the weather?
Almost all of the hobbies I’ve had are ones I dip in and out of - they never truly hold my attention. Weather is the

one exception and it has been a constant fascination for me. Though I have no formal meteorological qualifications, I take forecasting very seriously and use high-resolution data from weather models to support the forecasts that I write for Sheffield. I’ve also been a member of online weather communities for over ten years and learnt from some very knowledgeable members. How would you describe Sheffield’s climate?
Varied would be the best word! We do benefit from the shelter of the Peak District and the southern Pennines so we are not as rainy as Manchester for instance. I’d like to think we have a very balanced climate here, positioned where we are in the UK. We get our fair share of snow in winter but we also tap nicely into summer heat when it comes as well. I’m thankful that we have such amazing scenery on our doorstep to experience it all, too. Have you ever got it drastically wrong?!
Now, drastically is a strong word! The
Stephen Vincent
trickiest element when forecasting for Sheffield is definitely snow. Given the varied topography of the city it is a real challenge to be accurate when forecasting how much snow is going to fall. It is not an exaggeration to say that you can have the city centre with a bit of slush and a more elevated suburb of Sheffield just a mile or two away buried in deep snow! As such, I have learnt to be as specific as possible when forecasting snow. I’ve learnt that the hard way! Do you get recommendations for forecasts?
Occasionally someone will get in touch and ask for a more specific forecast, such as a holiday forecast or for a significant event. The page seems to be recommended regularly as almost all of the page growth is due to likes, comments and especially shares of my page which is really heartening - I’m grateful for every single engagement. Do you have any other hobbies?
Alongside my forecasting, I like to storm chase in the summer. That involves

INTERVIEW
travelling to a location where particularly severe storms are forecast and positioning carefully to get the best footage and photos of the storm structure without getting clobbered by it. It’s not quite as lairy as the chasing in America but it’s enough to get my adrenaline going. I also like to walk in the Peak District and photograph wildlife and landscapes. To stay fit and active I play five-a-side football every week. What are your favourite parts of the city?
I love socialising with friends in the city centre - I can’t wait until we can all mix safely again and breathe life back into the city. Otherwise, I’d have to say the nearby Peak District - I know I’m straying a little outside of Sheffield strictly speaking, but I know it’s a big draw for those who end up moving to Sheffield and if I ever leave the city it’ll be one of the biggest things I’ll miss. Any favourite places outside of Sheffield?
I studied up in Scarborough so that’s
always the first place that springs to mind. It’s so different to Sheffield of course with its gorgeous coastline so it was a really unique experience to live there for four years. I’m hoping to go back there in the near future and visit friends. Will you be going on holiday this summer?
I’m not planning anything spectacular, thankfully I got my travelling in before the pandemic began. My brother is working up in the Lake District - a stunning part of the world - so I’ll visit him when I can but otherwise it’ll be smaller trips to some of the more local beauty spots. That’s just fine though, I think our economy could do with more staycations this year. Most importantly, what’s the summer going to be like?
Given the weather’s propensity for heat these days I would expect another above-average summer in terms of temperature. I know I’m not exactly sticking my neck out but I think overall it’ll be a pretty mixed summer with
Thunderstorm over the Peak District
unsettled patterns alternating with spells of potentially significant heat. The way we’ll remember our summer is if any such pattern sticks for a lengthy period of time, as has been the case in recent years (remember the winter Beast from the East?). If a pattern does stick it’ll prove difficult to shift which is when we experience something more notable, whether it be significant rain, storms or heat. How long will Steel City Skies keep running?
As long as I have a passion for the weather and live in Sheffield there’s no reason for me not to stop as I still really enjoy it. I’ve built up a loyal following who appreciate the straight-talking forecasts, humour and local flavour. I’d like to thank all of those who like and share the page as they keep me going even when the weather tests my patience! You can follow Steel City Skies on Stephen’s blog - https://steelcityskies.home.blog – or on social media channels Facebook,Twitter andYouTube.

WINE
Spring selections SUPERMARKET WINES: DISCOVERING OUTSTANDING YET AFFORDABLE WINE. BY JAMIE GREEN. e have now moved into spring, 2020 is well behind us and it looks like things are finally starting to look up. A bright spring, restaurants and bars opening back up and meeting our Covid-bubble is a cause for celebration. With the season change, we move away from the rich and indulgent and towards more light and refreshing drops. Drinking a wine full of life and vibrancy not only matches the rising temperatures but lifts your mood and
W
makes you taste the new season. We’re not quite at BBQ season but will sure cling onto those warm spring days – hopefully there will be plenty of them. We have picked two striking bottles for this month’s selections. One of which is from New Zealand, where sauvignon blanc usually dominates. The other is from Greece, whose wines might be a little unknown to most of us.
Supermarket Wines’ Selection:
Freeman’s Bay
Nautilus
Riesling Marlborough, New Zealand Aldi £7.99
Rosé blend Achinos, Greece Aldi £5.99
The cool evening breezes of New Zealand’s Marlborough vineyards create a wine that is full of character, whilst retaining acidity. Freeman’s Bay and Aldi offer a wide range of quality wines at reasonable prices. This includes a rosé, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Riesling is an expressive grape and can produce wines from dry to super-sweet. Here we have an off-dry example, which simply means there’s a touch of sugar you should taste, but not a huge amount. With classic citrus and honeysuckle flavours you typically get from Riesling, you also can get a taste of orange blossom and honey. This can be enjoyed on its own on a refreshing day, or with food with a dash of spice
Greek wine has started to emerge on the UK shelves a lot more over the last year. The quality, and sometimes uniqueness, means they deserve to be there. These wines often have notes of smoke and minerality due to the mainly volcanic soils the grapes are grown on. This is a dry rosé wine from Greece, made from Grenache, Syrah and Agiorgitiko (a Greek native) grapes that produce a light salmon colour. The wine has a balance of dry fresh acidity with fruity flavours, and of course, offers a lovely minerality. It is produced from a 100-year-old vineyard, who aim to make a rosé that has a subtle and soft rosé colour that reflects the look and style of Provence.

Spring clean FOUND SOME OLD PIECES OF JEWELLERY BUT DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT? PA JEWELLERY EXPLAIN YOUR OPTIONS. e have all been spending more time at home over the last year and many of us have been getting through those household jobs we usually never get around to. If you have been tidying and sorted through your jewellery box, the chances are you have found old pieces of jewellery that have been hidden away. Now we are getting back out and about it is a great time to speak to a jeweller and find out what can be done with those old or broken pieces.
W
Repair Sometimes much-loved items are stored away because they are broken or no longer fit. Often these problems can be quite easily rectified in our workshop; a favourite ring could be resized and enjoyed again, or broken chain repaired.
Remodel We can often re-use your precious metal or gemstones to make a new piece of jewellery, a popular option with those who have inherited jewellery or have sentimental pieces that have worn out over time. This could mean setting a treasured diamond into a new mount or melting some family gold to create a wedding band with a personal touch. Our jewellers can advise you on what is possible and work with you on design ideas. In addition to being a fantastic way of maintaining sentiment this can often (although not always) save you money when compared to the cost of buying a similar piece.
Part exchange You might want a new watch or piece of jewellery that cannot be made using your existing materials. In this instance you could choose to part exchange your old jewellery or watch against the cost of the new.You will normally receive a higher offer for your items if you do this when compared to simply selling for cash. Even if you are not sure what you want yet, we can put the value on a gift card to spend with us later.
jewellery for cash. You may be surprised by how much it is worth. Even if broken or damaged, any items in gold, platinum or palladium will have value in the metal content and although worth much less, there is often some value in silver pieces too. Some items may also be suitable for re-sale as second-hand pieces and attract a higher offer. To help us keep our customers and employees safe and maintain distancing in the showroom you currently need to make an appointment to visit. You can do this by calling 0114 266 9253. The Diary ■ THEATRE ■ MUSIC ■ COMEDY ■ EVENTS ■ EXHIBITIONS ■ FILM ■ FURTHER AFIELD…
What to do after lockdown? As restrictions start to ease, we look at things to do and places to visit, from cinemas to theatres and more. Words: Anna Oxborough
he last year has been hard for every one of us.We have had to adapt to this new way of life. The endless lockdowns, the new ways of working from home, kids being off school, not being able to see any friends or family and limited social contact with anyone. It has been a little hard. However, it seems things are looking up and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has released a roadmap of what will be opening up on no earlier than 17 May and the summer months. These things include restrictions on meeting people
T
48 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
outdoors being lifted, however, meeting groups over 30 people will still be illegal. Most businesses will reopen, indoor entertainment and attractions; cinemas, play areas and more. Hospitality sectors like pubs will be invite customers indoors and no substantial meal will be required with drinks, but it has to be table service. Hotels and B&Bs will open up and allowed to go ahead are group sport and exercises classes. Performances will also be allowed to go ahead with indoor events holding up to 1,000 people or half full (whichever is the lower number). Outdoor events will hold up to 4,000 or
half full and outdoor seated venues can hold 10,000 or quarter full. Up to 30 people can now attend weddings, receptions, wakes and funerals. Following on into the summer months, from 21 June there will be no legal limits on social distancing and life events. Also, nightclubs will reopen, and they will be easing restrictions on larger events. We can soon get life back to normal and start to look forward to things again! It seems as though being able to have a meal with your friends, going to a music event, going to see the newly released film in the cinema is nearly in our reach.

Music Live music has been a big miss for many but, fingers crossed, performances should be able to resume inside and out from 17 May onwards. Many venues still seem to be airing on the side of caution with gigs pencilled in for later in the year rather than straight away, although no doubt this will change in the coming weeks and months. At the Arena you will be able to catch re-arranged performances from the likes of JLS (28-29 October), Steps (2 November) and Gary Barlow (2 December). In the city centre you can catch Tom Grennan (19 September), Declan McKenna (21 September) and Sheffield’s own Heaven 17 (13 November) at the O2 Academy, and Patawawa (12 June), Levellers (25 June) and You Me at Six (10 July) at The Leadmill. The potential for festivals taking place over the summer months is still up for debate. Tramlines, due to take place over the weekend 23-25 July, have yet to confirm or cancel and the same can be said for Derbyshire’s Y Not Festival (30 July-1 August). The coming weeks and months will reveal much more but if the events are cancelled, any ticket purchases will be rolled over to next year. One festival that looks set to go ahead is the Wentworth Music Festival (18 September), which takes place within the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse. Confirmed performers so far include The Feeling, Cast, Space, Bang Bang Romeo and on the comedy stage, Steve Royle, Justin Moorhouse and Susan Murray.

Theatre Like cinemas, Sheffield’s theatres will hope to have audiences back from 17 May. After the fantastic The Band Plays On, which was screened virtually in March, The Crucible has yet to confirm any further productions, although Standing at the Sky’s Edge, postponed last December, is expected to return for the festive season. Across Tudor Square at the Lyceum, there are a number of touring productions lined up including Heathers, which will run from 8-12 June. Based on the film of the same name, it centres around Westerberg High, where popularity is so very a matter of life and death, and Veronica
Sawyer is just another of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true. Until JD turns up, who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody. Chicago (22-26 June) is the classic tale of murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery set against the backdrop of one of the best musical scores out there, and is followed by 9 to 5 (29 June-3 July), Dolly Parton’s musical which tells the story of three workmates
pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Concocting a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor, will the women manage to reform their office - or will events unravel? Dial M for Murder (13-17 July) is the genre-defining Hitchcock thriller and sees TV and stage favourite, Tom Chambers, (Top Hat, Strictly Come Dancing) star as the charismatic and manipulative Tony Wendice, a jaded ex-tennis pro who has given it all up for his wife Margot. When he discovers she has been unfaithful his mind turns to revenge and the pursuit of the ‘perfect crime’.

Comedy Let’s be honest, we could all do with a laugh after the last 12 months. I’m sure there are many gigs to be confirmed but as well as the Last Laugh Comedy Club returning to Sheffield City Hall, you can look forward to the likes of Stewart Lee (20 June) and Mrs Brown’s Boys (6-7 July) performing there in the summer. Hopefully, there’ll be much more to follow. You can also catch Jack Dee at Buxton Opera House (14 May TBC). “In these difficult and uncertain times people need hope – a ray of sunshine to brighten their day. And that’s very much where I come in” says Jack. Across at Chesterfield's Winding Wheel you can see Jason Manford (28 August).
Arts & Culture Museums, galleries and exhibition centres will be welcoming visitors once again and will need your support. Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains a hugely popular visitor attraction and will be hosting Sunset Safari nights every Friday and Saturday from 30 July to 28 August, plus Bank Holiday Sunday, 29 August. Sunset Safari is exactly what you would think it would be - an evening stroll through the park, where you can see the amazing animals settle down for the end of the day. See the amazing polar bears take an evening swim in one of their lakes, watch the sun set behind the majestic lions or see the anteaters wake up from their daily slumber as the sun goes down. These evenings really will offer you a unique experience to see the animals in a different light.
Spectators could return to racecourses this summer
Further afield Chesterfield's Winding Wheel and Pomegranate Theatre are taking a positive stance and have shows lined up for summer, including Zog (23-24 June), The Haunting of Blaine Manor (9-10 July) and Beyond the Barricade (17 July). Buxton Opera House will be showing Crooners (29 August), a rip-roaring new comedy music show that has been wowing audiences, witty and exhilarating it is full of hilarious one liners, laugh out loud silliness and superb musical numbers with the outstanding nine-piece The Mini Big Band live on stage. Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage (31 August-4 September) is also back, exploding with heart50 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
pounding music, breathtaking emotion and sensationally sexy dancing. Racing is back up and running at Doncaster Racecourse with Derby Raceday planned for 5 June. Alongside all the exciting flat racing on Town Moor, you will be able to watch the world-famous Classic and the first leg of the coveted Triple Crown - the Epsom Derby - LIVE on the big screen! A subsequent race meeting will then take place on 31 July. Heading north up the M1, one festival definitely confirmed to be going ahead is Leeds Festival, which takes place over the weekend 27-29 August. Confirmed headliners include Stormzy, Liam Gallagher and Queens of the Stone Age.
The Piece Hall in Halifax have also confirmed their summer musical roster which will see the likes of Shed Seven (28 August), The Specials (29 August), Cribs (3 September), Richard Hawley (4 September), Manic Street Preachers (10 September) and Kaiser Chiefs (11 September) all perform over successive weekends at the striking location. If food is more your thing you’ll not want to miss the Great British Food Festival at Harewood (29-31 May) and the North Leeds Food Festival in Roundhay Park (7-8 August). And don’t miss the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate’s showground, which this year will be held over four days for the first time (13-16 July).

Cinema Movie theatres are set to re-open, at the earliest, on 17 May and with many of last year’s blockbuster film releases put on hold, this summer should see a tidal wave of new movies hitting the big screen. Marvel’s first cinematic release for almost two years, Black Widow, should finally get it’s release on 9 July and will be followed by Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (3 September). Disney’s offerings come in the form of Cruella (28 May), a live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Luca (18 June), a Disney-Pixar animated adventure set on the Italian Riviera that sees an unlikely but strong friendship grow between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Action lovers can gorge themselves on
Missing musical cinema? In The Heights hits screens on 18 June (above) while basketball star LeBron James stars in Space Jam: A New Legacy on 23 July (below)
the latest instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise - number 9 is set to be released on 9 July - whilst Tom Cruise returns to the cockpit for the longawaited sequel to Top Gun - Maverick (23 July). If you’re looking for a good family film, Space Jam: A New Legacy (23 July) should tick all the boxes. There’s no Michael Jordan this time but LA Lakers star LeBron James will be joining Bugs Bunny and the Looney Toons for more basketball-fuelled adventures. Finally, musical lovers can marvel at In The Heights (18 June), a feature version of the Broadway musical in which a bodega owner has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic are inheriting his grandmother’s fortune. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 51

MOTORING
Great tradition The new Bentley Continental GT Speed is the most dynamic road car in the carmaker’s 101-year history and an ultimate performance-focused interpretation of the world’s benchmark luxury Grand Tourer. Designed, engineered, developed and handcrafted in Bentley’s carbon neutral luxury automotive factory, this new thirdgeneration model builds on a long tradition of Speed variants. Originally introduced with the highly-acclaimed, first generation Continental GT Speed in 2007 – itself inspired by the 3-litre Speed models of the 1920s.The latest GT Speed continues the bloodline by representing the ultimate combination of luxury and performance in a Grand Touring package. It is equipped with an uprated version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine, delivering 659PS (650bhp) whilst maintaining an extraordinary 900Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque. With exceptional handling, this results in a top speed of 208mph (335 km/h) and 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.
SPEED IS THE NAME OF GAME FOR ONE LEGENDARY CARMAKER, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

The Volkswagen Touareg R is the first fully-fledged production R model to be launched with an electrified powertrain. Capable of both impressive performance as well as ultra-low emissions, the Touareg R features a petrol plugin hybrid system producing 462PS and 700Nm of torque. This impressive output makes the Touareg R the most powerful production Volkswagen to date. At the heart of the Touareg R is a sophisticated 3.0-litre V6 TSI eHybrid plug-in powertrain. Not only is it powerful, but it is also smooth and refined and, moreover, is frugal enough to make the R the most running-cost-friendly model in the Touareg range, with fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 94.2 mpg and 67g/km (combined cycle) respectively. A 28-mile electric-only range accessible in the Touareg R’s EMODE adds to the model’s low-CO2 credentials, with the 14.3 kWh (net) battery reducing running costs for this versatile performance SUV. Prices start at £71,995.
Hyundai has unveiled the BAYON, an all-new crossover SUV designed specifically for Europe. It will become the latest and smallest member of the carmaker’s expanding SUV family. With this, the all-new BAYON democratises technology, making high-tech safety and connectivity features accessible for all. BAYON boasts excellent fuel efficiency and highly competitive CO2 emissions ranking thanks to an updated Kappa engine family. At the top of the line-up is a 1.0litre T-GDi engine with 48V and 120 or 100 PS. This can be coupled with the six-speed intelligent Manual Transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

BEER
Sweet spring treat VISIONARY BREWMASTER LOOK AT AN INDULGENT PAIRING. pring is a time associated with treats and chocolate. Easter may have been and gone but maybe you’ve still got all that excess chocolate lying around the house. If so, why not use the excuse to also try out and enjoy a beer alongside your chocolate egg or even a chocolate flavoured or inspired beer or porter? The pairing of these two delicious treats has been known for centuries by brewers, who have used the two together to develop different flavours and notes within their beers to attract and retain new and existing customers. Sweet and bitter flavours are shared in both which makes them so well paired with each other and enjoyed by many. By as simple as adding cocoa or another format of chocolate to a beer’s brewing or fermenting stage can provide the subtle or strong chocolate flavours in the end product. Dark beer and porters are the usual suspects associated with chocolate flavoured alcoholic beverages, however any style of ale or lager can also be transformed to produce chocolate hints or elements. Not all chocolate beers are actually developed using cocoa or chocolate and are instead inspired and developed different through producing chocolatelike flavours by the right blend of dark roasted barley results in a distinct chocolaty taste and aroma in the final beer. Many of the typical stouts, such as Guinness, have notes of chocolate.

Visionary Brewmaster’s pick for May: The Pangolin Many of you local S6 readers and beer lovers will most likely be aware of the exciting news of The Pangolin craft beer shop/bar looking to open later this year in Hillsborough, Middlewood Road. The Pangolin stated: “A shop with ancillary on sales. Essentially half shop and half bar. We will be offering cask, keg and canned/bottled craft beer along with a small selection of wines, cider and pre-mixed gin and tonics.” In line with our vision ‘Sup local’, Pangolin will be sourcing their beer locally, as well as nationally and internationally, providing a vast range of products to enjoy. The shop added: “It will mainly be modern craft beer stocking sales such as pales, IPAs, stouts, porters and sours. This will be supplemented with classic European beers from Germany and Belgium amongst others. All products including draft beer will be available for drinking on the premises or taking away.” We like other local beer lovers are waiting in anticipation for 12 April when the shop plans to open as an off licence initially and then add seating later in the year when it’s appropriate. As much as our love is for beer it also must be said that The Pangolin have also partnered with KASK to supply some great wines, an independent wine bar in Bristol specialising in natural and low intervention wines. “It’s an exciting way for us to provide a high-quality selection of wines not available elsewhere in Hillsborough.” As we’ve highlighted in previous months beer shops, breweries and pubs are still starting up even with the risk of the current climate. The Pangolin acknowledged this expressing: “Whilst it’s been a risk to start a business that includes drinking on the premises during the pandemic, we definitely believe there is a fantastic opportunity in Hillsborough to be successful. We’re particularly optimistic now the potential road map of opening dates has been published.” To find out more find Pangolin Craft Beer on Facebook.
Goose Island crème egg beer One we were desperate to get our hands on but unfortunately missed out due to the limited numbers brewed and available was Goose Island’s Crème Egg stout, The Golden Goo-Beer-Lee, celebrating 50 years of Crème Eggs!
