Intimate PERFORMANCE
You have had a wonderful career so far. around you as you grew up and how did you choose the French Horn? Both my parents were musicians so music was part of my life from the get go. I attended countless concerts, operas and rehearsals from an extremely young age; some of my earliest memories are to do with music. It wasn’t, however, until my mid-teens that I decided to pursue music professionally. The Horn, however, was not my decision! At the age of six, I was diagnosed with a chronic lung condition, bronchiectasis, and on the advice of doctors, my parents gave me the Horn to see if it would help strengthen my lungs and improve my breathing.
What is the proudest moment of your career so far?
There have been many “pinch-me” moments for which I am extremely
grateful. Perhaps the strongest pinch was needed when I played the Schumann Andante and Variations for two pianos, two cellos and horn with Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburg Festival.
concerts have a particular quality of intimacy as the audience are quite this kind of close rapport with an attentive, listening audience? There is nothing more inspiring and encouraging for a performer than the feeling your audience is really with you as you’re playing to them. If you can feel this tangible connection, there is an even stronger desire to play in such a way that you want to elicit some emotional response from the audience.
Your chosen pieces for the concert

of melody simply wonderful. One only has to think of “The Swan” to see how much he was able to do with relatively little material. The two romances are gorgeous and the Morceau de Concert as a real tour de force of virtuosity.
What plans do you have for your future work?
I’m going to continue to commission new works, put on as many recitals as possible, play chamber music with wonderful people and play our concerto repertoire with as many orchestras that will have me!

Real Pet Grub has been open for business for sixteen amazing years and the time truly has flown by. During that period the team has been able to help thousands of customers with various health and diet problems belonging to their four‐legged family members.
It’s been a real pleasure to meet all the clients, making new friends every day and sadly losing a few too ‐ but those wonderful pets won’t be forgotten.
When Real Pub Grub was founded, the aim was to create an environment where customers felt welcome and became friends ‐ rather than just another generic business where people went to collect their pet food from.
They’d like to think they achieved just that and would like to thank every customer who has come through the doors and helped make this pet shop with a difference such a success and they hope they’ve made a positive difference in the lives of pets and their owners.

International FOCUS
Taking place from 17-19 May, the Chatsworth International Horse Trials will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cupbut there’s much more to enjoy over the weekend.
There will be a worldwide focus on Chatsworth International Horse Trials this year as it will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cup. This will be the second year running that the Derbyshire estate has hosted a leg of this competition, which is open to all nations around the world, consists of eight legs in total, and culminates in Boekelo in the Netherlands in October.
“We are thrilled to be asked once again to host the British leg of the National Cup and look forward to welcoming many international riders,” said event director Patricia Clifton.
The 2023 series attracted some of the world’s leading riders, including Ros Canter who had an outstanding score of 18 in the Dressage - CCI4*-S.
“This was real dressage, Izilot has really come into his own this season,” exclaimed Ros afterwards. “His ability is never in doubt – he’s a fantastic horse – but he is not straightforward at home and can be spooky. However, he has a good brain for the arena.”
French riders often fair well at Chatsworth and they were outstanding in the team competition, overhauling the British team with their superior crosscountry speed. Stephane Landois was the overall winner on the Saturday with a foot-perfect performance on the 11-year-old grey Selle Francais, Chaman Dumontceau. David Doel, from Wiltshire, was the best British rider on Christine Lees’ quality mare, Ferro Point, and won the prize for
country time penalties.
“Chatsworth is one of my favourite places to come and very popular with owners,” said David. “It’s the premier CCI4*-S in the country and you know you’re going to get a good cross-country course. The ground conditions were testing, but at least one of us is little and lightweight – my mare scampered around easily.”
The Sunday saw young rider Lizzie Baugh score the biggest win of her career, scooping the CCI4*-S in the cross-country on her home-bred gelding, B Exclusive.
“I didn’t really mean to be so fast, as this was a prep run for Bramham,” she said at the time. “But I thought I must be positive and the horse seemed to pick up all the lines easily.”
Emma Thomas also won the prize for best

under-25 rider and had the second fastest time aboard Rebecca Velarde’s Icarus X.
“He was a bit of a wild child, but he is ten now and loves his job,” said Emma. “I love it here at Chatsworth. It is so beautiful and is a proper, bold crosscountry track.”
The Chatsworth International Horse Trials takes place over the weekend of 17-19 May and offers thrilling world class equestrian action, including dressage, show jumping and cross country. You can also see the starts of the future in the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse
Alongside the equestrian action there is plenty to keep families entertained, with
a packed arena schedule that includes the Shetland Pony Grand National, Pony Club Mounted Games, falconry displays, and the The Dog and Duck Show. Children can try pottery painting and tackle a climbing wall, while family dogs can take part in the dog agility or a fun dog show.
You can also take a break from the action with a walk round the shopping village, featuring more than 100 brands offering equestrian essentials, homeware, clothing, crafts and gifts There is also
options for all tastes and appetites.
The house, garden, farmyard and playground will be open as usual during the horse trials.

Green with ENVY
When choosing emerald jewellery, there are several factors to consider, say PA Jewellery.
merald is amongst the most popular gemstones, and classically regarded as precious. It is the green variety of the mineral beryl, most famous for its strikingly bright colour.
EWhen choosing emerald jewellery, there are several factors to consider, which will have an impact on the price of the item. Selecting the right piece for you can is often a compromise between preferences and budget. So, what characteristics might you need to consider?
Shape
Shapes are typically selected that best show off the colour, although they should also pay heed to the physical properties of the gem. Emeralds are quite brittle and prone to fracturing if knocked. The most common cut for this gem is the emerald cut, ideal for showcasing colour and protecting the more delicate corners.
In modern jewellery, a wide variety of shapes are available, although special care should be taken with those that have sharper corners or points.
Colour
We have mentioned already that colour is
the principal factor for consideration when selecting an emerald. An even, intense green is usually regarded as the most desirable, with stones that are lighter or darker than this ‘optimum’ generally more affordable, all other factors being equal.
Clarity
Part of the reason that emeralds are brittle is that they are very prone to forming with to a variety of mineral inclusions (small crystals of other minerals) that are also commonly seen. This characteristic also generally diminishes the transparency of emeralds, which often have a less lively appearance than many other gems.
Treatments and Care
It is also important to be aware that, due to their propensity for fractures, emeralds are routinely treated with oil to improve their appearance. The presence of the oil in
helps to disguise them, making them harder to spot.
Filling treatments can deteriorate over time, and may be damaged by cleaning, so care does need to be taken. Ultrasonic
and steam cleaning are not suitable for emeralds, and neither are gold cleaning solutions/baths.
Location
Emeralds are found in a variety of countries around the world, and a range of qualities may be found in each locale. The most famous location for emeralds is Colombia,
stones. Most emeralds in the marketplace today are sourced from Brazil and Zambia, and both locations also provide beautiful gems.

fter three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.
AThis year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It
well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local
restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.
Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.
Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk
