Do you remember? ere’s a slice of life from old North Sheffield. There aren’t too many people around and those roads look eerily underused... not so much as a horsedrawn buggy! The view will probably be familiar to many Sixer readers so can anyone tell us the story behind this photograph?

Last month’s photo challenge was wellreceived and John Quick responded via email

to tell us that the view was of Oughty Bridge railway station. “Note the spelling,� says John. “The camera is facing Sheffield with the brickworks chimney, Oughtibridge Lane bridge and the elevated Oughty Bridge East signal box in the background.� John suspects the photograph was taken c. 1905 and he may well be right. Joe Castle also spotted the location and tells us that the station was built in 1845.

Help make it a very merry Christmas etween the tinsel and the turkey, it is easy to forget that the festive period should be a time of giving and of reflection. One in four children are living in poverty in South Yorkshire and last year’s record breaking Mission Christmas appeal saw Cash for Kids’ deliver gifts to 21,458 children. This is why Morfitt Smith estate agents has teamed up with Hallam FM for the second year to launch the Christmas campaign. Cash For Kids are encouraging people to buy an extra Christmas gift that can then be distributed to needy children at risk of waking up to nothing on Christmas Day. This year a ‘virtual gift’ can also be donated by texting Hallam to 70808 to donate £5 to the campaign. Morfitt Smith are the official drop off point for your Christmas gift donations, and with branches in Banner Cross, Hillsborough and Crookes, you’re never far from your local branch. Hundreds more local businesses have also signed up to become drop-off points, and are hoping to make this year the best fundraiser yet. “Christmas is such a lovely time of year for bringing friends and families together and we all remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning to find out what presents

we have - but not everyone is as fortunate.” Says Paul Batty, director of Morfitt Smith “Mission Christmas is such an important and worthy cause to ensure every child has a smile on their face on Christmas morning. Our mission is to raise as much awareness as possible in support of the appeal.” Once collected the gifts are distributed to organisations responsible for the care of children, including social services, youth groups, schools and local community groups, and many other organisations across the region. Back in May you might have seen the strange sight of the Morfitt Smith team going about their everyday business dressed as superheroes; showing their support for Hallam FM’s Superhero Day. It is this ongoing charity work - which includes Hallam Heroes, Happy Street and a charity skydive - completed by area manager Kaye Orwin - in the last year alone – in addition to the fundraising work they do with local pre-schools, that has led to Morfitt Smith being shortlisted in The Negotiator Awards for Community Champion of the Year. In support of the Mission Christmas appeal, Morfitt Smith are also giving away a weekend theatre trip to London. Including tickets to see Wicked, a trip on the London eye, two nights

in a four star central London hotel (breakfast included) and rail travel. Everyone who donates a present to Mission Christmas through Morfitt Smith will receive a free #lilsmiffy bear and a ticket number. The winning ticket will be posted on social media and in the new Morfitt Smith e-magazine – for the winner to come forward to receive their prize. Ticket numbers are limited to the first 500 people. One entry per household. To kick start the campaign on 14 November, the Mission Christmas team will be joined by Santa for the official switch-on of the Christmas grotto at the Banner Cross office. The team will also be taking part in festive fundraising events throughout the Christmas period, including Christmas Jumper Day on 9 December and a coin exchange; exchanging chocolate coins in each office for a donation to Cash For Kids. LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY: THE MYTH AND THE REALITY. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.

MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY: Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?

MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.

MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).

You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.

MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!

• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse life-sustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

Festive finishing touches IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMAS AT SHEFFIELD’S NEW BOUTIQUE DEPARTMENT STORE. he team at Sandersons Boutique Department store are getting ready for their first Christmas with lots of fantastic events, offers and of course fabulous festive gift ideas in store. Sandersons opened at Fox Valley in north Sheffield on 1 September and the response to the new concept store has been fantastic so far. The team are now putting their finishing touches to their Christmas displays and gearing up for the shopping centre’s big lights switch on which takes place on Friday 18 November at 7pm. The store has an array of stunning gift ideas, which start at just £5 and with some fabulous products which are exclusive in this part of the region to Sandersons, it really is the place to shop this Christmas. ou may know Chris Walker as Rob Hollins, a policeman in BBC daytime soap Doctors, but when he isn’t donning his uniform in front of the cameras, Chris loves to entertain at home, throwing dinner parties for his friends and family. Chris’s love for food led him to compete in Celebrity Masterchef, where he reached the semi-finals, creating wonderful dishes for judges Greg Wallace and John Torode, but his passion for cooking began when he left the family home in Yorkshire and moved to London. “Cooking wasn’t that important to me until I left home, then I started making standard things like a Bolognese or a chilli and I became fascinated,” said Chris. Fuelled by his new found love for food, Chris started collecting cookbooks and now has a couple of hundred at home, covering every cuisine imaginable. He would often prepare meals for fellow actors whilst touring the UK, and this soon grew into hosting dinner parties.

Chris’s prowess in the kitchen didn’t go unnoticed, and a friend at The Regent Hotel, Doncaster, asked him to host gourmet nights on a Friday, each one themed round a different cuisine. “I cooked nine-course gourmet meals for up to 44 people, I wanted to prove to myself by charging people money. When you invite people round to your house they’re not going to tell you the food is rubbish, because that would be rude. But people will when they have to pay for it, I charged quite a lot of money and people kept coming back again and again, so that was great.” For Chris, food is about bringing people together around the table. He said: “These days things have changed, there’s so much food you can microwave and so many takeaways available. When I was a lad people sat round the table and shared family times, and that is what is important to me, to create that ambience.” With so much entertaining experience, Chris shared his tips and tricks for throwing a wonderful dinner party.

“The thing about dinner parties is that the host has to be there, if the host is in the kitchen all the time, it ruins the evening for them and their guests. A host should get a chance to sit round the table and talk, because that’s what food is all about. That’s one of the most important things about food, it should bring people together. It’s all about preparation at a dinner party, that’s the real secret. You need a starter that is made up, a main course that can be left, and a pre-made dessert, whether that be hot or cold. I recommend using your slow cooker, make something two days before and it’ll improve in the fridge. On the day itself, you’re presenting food rather than cooking it – that’s the key to it all. You don’t want to be serving fillet steak to eight people when you have to cook it to order, that’s restaurant stuff. That doesn’t make for a conducive dinner party.”

ON ARRIVAL “You want some nibbles out already, something that people can get stuck into straight away like olives, especially if you’re inviting people who haven’t met before. Make sure there’s a drink waiting for them, either a cocktail or a glass of bubbles.” TO START “A smoked mackerel pate works very well. You can buy the mackerel already smoked and mix it through with some crème fraiche and some capers. Stir through some sultanas soaked with wine and serve that with some salad, some melba toast, butter and you’re done.” MAIN “Try ox cheek, it’s just amazing, it’s superb. Cook it for six to eight hours in the slow cooker and it’ll be the best beef you’ve ever tasted. I do it a day or two before, put a bottle of wine in there, put carrots in huge and whole and leave them to cook. I would brown the beef first, cut it into big pieces, and then add red wine, beef stock and huge vegetables, also add onions and thicken it later using either cornflour or a mixture of butter and plain flour in a paste.”

Where to source ingredients “Use your local market. Of course we all use supermarkets, but if you get a good relationship with your butcher and your fishmonger they’ll help you, they’ll hang meat for you longer than a supermarket will, they’ll give you special cuts, they’ll look after you.”

Drinks “Always team drinks and wine. The first thing is not to be scared of wine, it’s there to be enjoyed. No one should be snobbish about wine, in this day and age you can get some great wines for a really good price. You can get a lovely bottle of wine for five or six quid, but if you’re having a dinner party and want to make it a bit special, pay a bit more and it’s so much better. Matching wine to food is great fun. You want to start with a white wine or a sparkling wine, or you can do cocktails, then move onto red, then port and brandy. A good idea for dinner parties is to choose a cocktail and make it in a punchbowl, at the moment I’m loving pornstar martinis. Make it up in a nice big bowl, don’t put ice in it, instead fill empty spirit bottles ¾ full with water and freeze them. That keeps the cocktail cold and doesn’t dilute it. Get a ladle and everyone can serve themselves.”

Music and entertainment “I would always have a little bit of

background music, like my food I like everything. I love classical, I love jazz, I love heavy rock, you want to be putting on something a bit background. If you’re serving at Christmas, obviously get some carols and some Bublé on, or a bit of Nat King Cole. It depends how you’re theming your dinner party, during the World Cup and other football tournaments I choose a theme based on a team playing. For example you might do Brazilian food and choose your music accordingly.”

Good food, good wine and good company – the ingredients for a successful dinner party

For a more informal dinner party “There are lots of great ideas to make a dinner party less formal. One thing you can do is get a leg of lamb and cook it until it falls apart and then shred that on the table. Then have lots of wraps and different ingredients so people can make their own wraps; you can do that with beef and pork as well. If you’re going to do South East Asian or Chinese food get all the ingredients in bowls in front of everyone with part-cooked veg and meat, then serve a lovely homemade stock in teapots on the table so guests can pour their own red hot stock into their bowl and everything becomes warm again, usually served with noodles. You could do the same with Mexican. It’s nice to put big bowls of food on the table and let people help themselves, that breaks the ice as well.”

One final tip? “Go and read up on what you’re going to do. Don’t be afraid of food, don’t ever apologise for your food in front of your guests and be confident. Don’t poison anyone though, you don’t want your guests being ill.”

Whitby’s famous Magpie Café. The seafood dishes featured marry perfectly with a pint of Bradfield Beer; in some cases – such as the beer-battered fish and chips, or the rump, stout and oyster pie – they’re even made with it. Set in the beautiful village of Bradfield, Watt House Farm was always an unlikely setting for a brewery. But when milk prices began to take a tumble at the turn of the millennium, John and Susan Gill knew something needed to be done. The idea to set up an onsite brewery came from the Gills’ son Richard, a keen homebrewer who saw a way to turn his hobby into a business opportunity for the family. Susan was just happy that the brewing equipment would be set up somewhere other than her kitchen table, where Richard’s homebrew kits had been – the steam had made her kitchen wallpaper peel away! Having decided to take the plunge, the Gills faced a number of obstacles in setting up their new venture – securing funding, finding equipment. Most heartbreaking of all was the decision, a few months into operation of the brewery, to sell their dairy cows. For a family who had farmed all their lives, it was a tough choice to make. But with the closing of one chapter came the start of a brand new one – and since then, Bradfield Brewery has gone from strength to strength. ‘Mine’s A Pint’ details some of the Gill’s greatest triumphs: the opening of their pub, the Nags Head; joining in the celebrations as the Tour de France passed through Yorkshire in 2014; and the runaway success of Farmers Blonde, one of Sheffield’s best-selling beers, and Belgian Blue, their Christmas ale famed across the region for its unique blue head. It’s a berry nice pint! IT MUST BE CHRISTMAS, BRADFIELD BREWERY’S BELGIAN BLUE IS BACK AGAIN. t was in 2006 that beer lovers first supped a pint of Belgian Blue. Those who tried the seasonal beer soon got a taste for its berry overtones and slight blue tint to the head, and ten years later Bradfield Brewery’s Christmas ale has become a festive phenomenon, selling 350,000 pints in 2015. “People look forward to it coming out, they associate it with Christmas,” said brewery owner John Gill. “It’s a phenomenon that’s built up year on year, each year it has been getting more popular.” John and his family began brewing beer at Watt House Farm in 2005, when plummeting milk prices forced the dairy farmers to diversify. The cow shed was transformed into a brewery and soon Belgian Blue became an essential part of Bradfield’s Christmas celebrations. “Belgian Blue has been around since the beginning, but people don’t often realise that,” said John. “One of the first pubs I remember having a pint of Blue in was the Robin Hood at Stannington, which has been converted into housing now.” Today, Belgian Blue travels much further than Stannington, with requests for the beer coming in from across the UK and Ireland. A fan in Belfast has requested Blue for their festivities, and one bottle even made it all the way to Jamaica, to celebrate Christmas in sunnier climates. But Belgian Blue’s journey to the Christmas dinner table starts much closer to home, when the first lorry loads of the beer’s closely guarded, secret ingredients arrive at Watt House Farm in October. From then it takes around ten

days to create the first pints, with the process to create bottles of Blue taking slightly longer. October is the busiest month for brewing at Bradfield, with around 130,000 pints brewed each week. In one particular week Bradfield Brewery produced 520 brewers barrels of beer – around 150,000 pints. By late October, Belgian Blue is ready for launch, and the first pint is pulled in the Nags Head Inn, the brewery’s own pub, just a mile away from where Blue is brewed. For the first time last year, the beer was launched at a specific time, 4pm. By the time the chimes struck, beer lovers from near and far had arrived for their first taste of the Christmas. “We were surprised how many people turned up,” said John. “The pub was completely full, some people had even taken the next day off work.” To celebrate this year’s launch, Bradfield Brewery asked their Facebook fans how many pints of Belgian Brew were poured on that launch night in 2015 in the Nags. The exact number was 560, between 4pm and 11pm, which works out at more than a pint a minute. For those who can’t make it to the Nags Head, Belgian Blue is available on draft at pubs across Sheffield and further afield. It is also available in 500ml bottles and 5 litre mini kegs from the brewery’s onsite shop and other shops nationwide. At the Hillsborough you will always find seven real ales. These include Mojo (3.6 per cent), our house pale ale from Tapped Brewery, Sheffield, and Acorn Barnsley Bitter (3.8 per cent), for £2.60 a pint. Our other ales are sourced locally and from around the UK. We have a selection of draught lagers, including Carling and Stella Artois, and Stowford Press Cider, as well as a selection of bottled beers and ciders. Our hard work over the year has paid off, as we recently received the Sheffield Camra Pub of the Month award for October in recognition of the quality and service our staff have provided to our customers. We hold two to three beer festivals a year and we hold regular tasting nights, where you can join us to try the latest gins, whiskey, rums, port and sherry, accompanied by some tasty treats. Tom and chef Mandy Davis have put together a selection of pub classics and new dishes with a modern twist, which is available Tuesday to Friday, 12 - 8.30 pm, and Saturday 12-7.30pm. BY RACHEL MARTIN. hen Claire and Graham Bonner considered modernising their bathroom, they turned to Eric Law and his team at Visual Bathrooms – and were thrilled with the results. “My husband and I had been considering modernising our bathroom for some time and had seen Visual Bathrooms in Sixer magazine and passed by the showroom often; they’re based on Holme Lane and we live locally in Stannington. “We were looking for a complete design and fitting service and after researching a number of bathroom suppliers we decided to call into the showroom, which was notably well presented. “We found Eric and his team to be extremely accommodating and friendly – he really knew what he was talking about and seemed very trustworthy – and the team seemed to be very passionate about what they do. “We gave Eric a detailed list of requirements; we wanted a simple scheme that

wouldn’t date and a separate bath and shower and, as our bathroom is quite small, we arranged for him to come round and asses the space. When it came to choosing the products, he listened to our ideas and offered suggestions on how it would work and after some deliberation he advised us on the items and brands that would fit our brief and budget. “Eric invited us to come back to the showroom where he had produced a computer generated mock-up of our design. He suggested a shower and cubicle fitting to our brief and we chose other items from the showroom. After discussing timescales (he advised fitting would take a maximum of two weeks) and receiving a full, detailed quote, we were eager to go ahead. “In addition to the bath and shower we went for full tiling and new spotlights, and before the fitting Eric dropped a selection of tile samples round for us to choose from. “The fitters were efficient and tidy, and as we went away for the first week of work, Eric

kept in touch to let us know what was happening. owering high, decorated with gorgeous ornaments and covered in lights that twinkle like stars - gazing at a Christmas tree can be a magical experience. So just imagine how spectacular it would be to walk into a room full of them. From Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 December, Brightholmlee Methodist Church in Wharncliffe Side will house 29 decorated Christmas trees. This will be the church’s third Christmas Tree Festival, at which local businesses, groups and individuals are invited to sponsor trees to raise money for charity. “The number of sponsors and visitors at last year’s event exceeded our best expectations,” says event organiser, Gill Evans. “We were so pleased to be told by everyone that it had that ‘wow factor’.” Gill was first inspired to put on the event after going on a trip to Cheshire. She stumbled upon a church holding their own Christmas tree festival in aid of Cancer Research and was so impressed, she decided to introduce the idea to Brightholmlee Methodist Church, where she has helped out for the past 25 years. In its first year, the event raised £1,000, in its second year, it raised around £2,000 for the Friends of Sheffield Children's Hospital, and it is hoped that this year’s event will raise

even more. As well as the Friends of Sheffield Children's Hospital, this year the church are adding the Alzheimer’s Society and Parkinson’s UK to their list of beneficiaries. Each sponsor makes a donation and either decorates their tree, or asks helpers at the church to decorate the tree for them. Local organisations that support the festival include Wharncliffe Side School, Wharncliffe Side Brownies and Rainbows, Wharncliffe Side Village Hall, Wharncliffe Side’s Women’s Institute, mother and toddler group Bright Young Things and a Stocksbridge health walks group, whilst businesses include ACB Cleaning, Andrew Singleton (painter and decorator), Hilton Electrical, Rosewood Loft Creations and The Wharncliffe Arms, as well as a number of local individuals. Last year, 13 shops, businesses and individuals also donated some fantastic prizes for the raffle including a food hamper and shopping vouchers. This year, Fox Valley has joined in by donating a £25 makeover voucher for new boutique store, Sandersons. The event has even had support from DIY chain store B&Q. When Jill visited the store on Penistone Road and asked for 25 trees for the first event back in 2014, they offered Jill a 20 per cent discount.

“We started this event to bring the community together at Christmas time and it seems to have worked,” adds Gill. “We’ve been well-supported by locals, as well as people who have visited from as far away as Barnsley. “None of this would have been possible without the support of Rev. Katie Leonowicz, my husband Gordon and the help of our coorganisers Wendy and Roy Singleton. We create a welcoming environment for our visitors and are looking forward to another very special event this year.” Brightholmlee Methodist Church will be opening its doors for the Christmas Tree Festival from Thursday 8 to Saturday 10 December, from 3pm to 7pm. Admission to the event is free – all the church asks is that visitors make a donation or enter the raffle for a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Refreshments will also be available. This will be followed by a carol service on Sunday 11 December.

Vital help of charity support nurse highlighted by heart failure mum A Derbyshire woman who suffered heart failure while pregnant has hailed a Sheffield Hospitals Charity-funded nurse who helped her bond with her baby during her lifesaving care. Ruth Clout, aged 39, was admitted to the Jessop Wing Hospital at 33 weeks pregnant as a precaution, after suffering coughing and breathlessness. But, after doctors diagnosed Ruth’s heart condition, baby William had to be delivered early. It was thanks to the help of family support nurse Sandra Brown that Ruth and her family found a way to cope with their traumatic ordeal. “Sandra gave us information about the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). She also talked about the process after the delivery.” said Ruth. “The booklets she gave us helped us to explain to our four-year-old daughter Emily that our baby was going to be coming early, which made things less scary for her. I had to have a general anaesthetic during the delivery, but Sandra was there and took photos for us. She spent vital time with Daniel and my parents on the day of delivery and was incredibly supportive to them all. “I was very worried and upset about being separated from my baby at birth and not bonding. But after I was woken from the anaesthetic, the neonatal transfer team and Sandra had brought William to see me on the ward in cardiac intensive care.” Ruth stayed in hospital for two weeks and during this period Sandra ensured she saw William on a daily basis, so that she did not miss out on his early development. Sandra is funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity and helps parents deal with their baby’s stressful journey through the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by providing information, emotional support and practical advice. Loxley Silver Band has been awarded funding by the PRS for Music Foundation Open Fund. The award will allow the band to commission, perform and record up to four unique compositions by the internationally renowned artist Barry Gilbey. This exciting project will create new music which crosses genres from brass band into popular music. The commissions will be performed live at a world premiere in Sheffield and professionally recorded by the band Stuart Young, the band’s secretary, said: “We are absolutely ecstatic and honoured that we’ve been offered this award from the PRS for Music Foundation amongst so many other very prestigious names. It will allow us to push forward in our goal to expand the scope of the modern brass band and reach new audiences.”

Youngsters in rowing competition Inspired by Rio 2016, local children have participated in an inter-school rowing competition. For some pupils this was the first time they had tried the sport, but the event – organised by the Link School Sport partnership – was enjoyed by all. There was an amazing atmosphere during the day, with Y6 pupils cheering their teams on. Pupils from Stocksbridge Junior School showed particular talent in rowing and won a number of medals. Equally as impressive were the pupils from Wharncliffe Side Primary School, who showed determination, effort and excellent sportsmanship.

This years’ annual harvest auction and Halloween festival at The Nags Head raised a staggering £3,600 for Sheffield’s Weston Park Cancer Charity. The event, which was supported by Bradfield Brewery and featured performances from Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir, saw local renowned auctioneer, Steven Helliwell, kindly donating his services for the evening and young auctioneer, Kyle Hawksworth, getting in on the act. Lucky bidders scooped up treasures and treats, including a giant pumpkin which sold for £85. A giant pork pie was scooped for £40 and a jar of pickled onions made a whopping £60.

Wild and wonderful JOHN MURPHY HITS IRELAND’S WILD ATLANTIC WAY AND FINDS WARM HOSPITALITY, FANTASTIC FOOD AND, BEST OF ALL, GREAT GOLF. “

er eyes, they shone like diamonds …” Words from a famous Dubliners’ song but an apt description of the Lady Captain who arrived to greet our visiting party at Killorglin Golf Club in Kerry. It may not be the best course in the South West of Ireland or the most famous but in terms of hospitality, spirit and warmth it has few rivals. Anne Kenny Foley was justifiably brimming with pride when she met us and introduced us to the club. The civility extended to a serenade over lunch, performed by the chef on accordion and her daughter on vocals. A shared pint of the “Black Stuff ” with club members merely enhanced the atmosphere of mirth and merriment. Only in Ireland… Anne is justifiably proud of her course. The

clubhouse, with its panoramic windows, provides stunning views across the country with the course framed on one side by the Macgillicuddy Reeks Range (including Carrauntouhill, Ireland’s highest mountain) and Dingle Bay and the Slieve Mish mountains beyond. The course, costing a mere 25 euros a round, is only 20 minutes from Killarney, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland. It lies at the heart of Killarney National Park with its lakes and mountains providing the perfect location for walking, cycling, boating, fishing and of course golf. From our base, the rather grand and comfortable Hotel Arbutus in the heart of the town, we enjoyed rounds at three other courses but Killarney can also be used as a

starting point to enjoy the rugged and beautiful Wild Atlantic Way. The Wild Atlantic Way is a 1,500 mile driving route along the west coast of Ireland passing through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from County Donegal’s Inishowen peninsula in the north to what is commonly known as Ireland’s culinary capital in the south, Kinsale. A tourist going south from Killarney can head for Skibbereen, firstly navigating the beautiful Ring of Kerry, the Iveragh peninsula. Beauty and heritage are fused in this part of the world. On the one hand there is the beautiful Rossbeigh beach – one of Europe’s finest – and on the other hand there is the heritage of Derrynane House – former home to Daniel O’Connell, “The Liberator”. Further south the Wild Atlantic Way will

Don’t forget to take in the verdant gardens on Garnish Island and enjoy the views at Bantry Bay. Get to Baltimore Harbour, outside Skibbereen, and you realise there is nothing but water between you and the next piece of land – America. The countryside is enchanting with loughs running into the sea and walking trails around and on top of rugged coastal promontories. A long holiday or a number of trips would be needed to appreciate the Wild Atlantic Way in all its glory as there so many highlights. At the north there is the magical district of Connemara where turquoise, crystal clear water laps unspoilt, white sand beaches and ancient thatched, cottages dot the horizon. Go south on the route from Connemara and take in the party city of Galway, the stunning Cliffs of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula, famed for its clifftop views of the crashing Atlantic waves below. Be brave and drive the Conor Pass. If you’re lucky you may

catch sight of Dingle’s famed aquatic visitor, Fungi, the Dolphin. This part of Ireland is also home to some of the country’s finest restaurants, which is no surprise given the quality and volume of local produce. Rozzers restaurant at Killeen House Hotel in Killarney is a perfect example: fine local food supported by a great atmosphere. Ashes Restaurant in Dingle offers the same: the turbot I sampled was exceptional. The Wild Atlantic Way must also be unique in being home to some of the best golf courses in the world in such a condensed strip of land. It features marquee courses such as Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee and Lahinch alongside the likes of Ballyliffin, Connemara, Dooks and The Old Head. We were fortunate to play three other courses in this area. The drive on the Atlantic Way to Dingle Golf Links (Ceann Sibeal) is spectacular as you traverse narrow lanes to reach the very tip of the Dingle Peninsula. The course is equally spectacular as you attempt to define holes hewed out of dunes and long wispy grass. Beaufort is a more traditional inland parkland course with wellmaintained fairways and greens while Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is the epitome of the imposing and traditional championship venue. @SixerRMC
