Do you remember? ere’s a photograph that may well bring a sentimental tear to the eye of anyone who remembers the golden age of steam trains. It may seem like a long-vanished era but there are many Sixer readers who will still recall the times when this image, supplied by our friend Barry Couldwell, was taken. Let us know if it jogs any memories. Last month we showed you a photo, also provided by Barry, of hard-working men from Turners Quarry in Worrall. This was the largest quarry in an area that was also known for ganister mining. It is said that stone from this quarry was used to build the Wicker Arches in Sheffield. The quarry closed at the start of World War Two and is now a housing development.

Christmas is coming to Fox Valley CENTRE PREPARES FOR ITS BUSIEST TIME.

he team at Fox Valley in north Sheffield are gearing up for their favourite time of year as the centre prepares for the busy Christmas period. The run up to Christmas will be launched on Friday 17 November, when the Christmas Lights Switch On takes place from 4pm until 7pm with a packed schedule of entertainment throughout the evening and a stunning festive lights display. This year’s event will be hosted by the Dearne FM Roadshow and sponsored by Burrows Motors – a busy evening of entertainment has been organised featuring choirs and local dance groups, as well as a jazz trio. The big switch on will be accompanied by a glittering fireworks display to signal the start of the Christmas shopping period at the busy north Sheffield shopping centre and to kick-off a packed diary of festive events, which will run throughout November and December. The centre’s stunning lights will once again feature a traditional Christmas tree, as well as the seven-metre high reindeer. A special competition is being organised for one lucky youngster to have the chance to be Santa’s helper at the big switch-on. As well as the festive Farmers’ Market on Saturday 2 December, the centre will also host a fabulous line-up of Christmas markets every Friday and Saturday right through to Christmas. These will be held in the indoor market area between Sports Direct and Next. Festive performances will take place every weekend in the centre’s brand new

bandstand to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. Fox Valley has also been chosen to be one of the host locations for the Coca-Cola Truck Tour this year. The iconic Christmas truck will be at the centre from 11am until 7pm on Tuesday 28 November, with lots of festive activities planned including sampling huts, photo platforms, food and drink stalls, face painting and late night shopping. Late night shopping is planned every Thursday from 30 November with everything you need this Christmas, from the centre’s fabulous array of stores, including Sandersons, Next, Sports Direct, M&Co and Regatta. Fox Valley is also home to South Yorkshire’s only Seasalt store and the beautiful JoJo Maman Bebe, the region’s first Trek Bicycle store has also just launched at the centre with a fabulous new concept store. And for your extra special Christmas nights out, Ponti’s Italian Kitchen and NYC Bar and

Grill are the perfect places to eat out with lovely views of the centre’s festive displays in the piazza area. Centre manager at Fox Valley, Annabel Plumtree, said: “We are really pulling out the stops to celebrate Christmas this year. We will have Christmas markets every Friday and Saturday, as well as festive entertainment every weekend throughout November and December. “We are really excited that Coca-Cola has chosen Fox Valley as a location for the Truck Tour and can’t wait to welcome the truck to the centre on 28 November. LIGHT AFTER THE DARKNESS BEN ORRAH SUFFERED POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AS A RESULT OF WATCHING HIS PREMATURE TWINS’ FIGHT FOR LIFE. NOW HE’S ON A MISSION TO HELP OTHER DADS. RACHEL MARTIN REPORTS. n November last year, Ben Orrah’s wife and childhood sweetheart Paula gave birth to tiny twins Polly and Logan, at just 32 weeks. Polly arrived first, weighing 3lb 9 oz. and Logan followed weighing 3lb 15 oz., meaning a long intensive care stay on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Jessop Wing. Ben is a biomedical scientist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and often works with the NICU as part of his job, but it still didn’t prepare him for the journey as a new parent of premature babies. “Our first visit to see the twins was a complete shock to the system,” He says. “The noise, the beeping of the machines, the hustle and bustle of all the doctors, sisters and nurses on the unit and how many other families were there, each in a similar scenario to us.” As the weeks went by, Polly and Logan had

plenty of ups and downs, but as they entered their sixth week on the unit and neared Christmas, the twins were making great progress. “The journey from birth to getting our babies home was one of the toughest things we have ever had to do, yet we were very lucky. The staff on NICU were an amazing support to us, but the whole experience of seeing Polly and Logan so poorly had a huge impact on my mental health. On the one hand, we were the happiest people in the world, then on the other, we were constantly worried about our babies and hoped they would be ok. “Paula was always so positive, but desperately wanted to breastfeed, which was difficult with two premature babies. For the first time I could see her struggling, and I seemed to be getting all the fun times – the @SixerRMC

cuddles and the bonding – and I felt so guilty.” Seven weeks later, just before Christmas, Polly and Logan were discharged. But Ben had started to have flashbacks and awful nightmares. “I’d just start sobbing uncontrollably for no apparent reason and I would black out at times and relive a particular moment in great detail over and over, before coming round and wondering what had happened to me. “The nightmares felt so real I often woke up crying as if we were back there all over again. I felt like a fraud and a failure, and at first, I hid it from Paula. I felt if, despite everything, she was holding our family together, what kind of man was I that I was struggling.” Ben endeavoured to research how he was feeling, hoping for some kind of answer, and

WE’RE ON THE HUNT FOR HEROES came across post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) websites that outlined every symptom he was experiencing. Each website mentioned however, that it was common for mums to feel that way after an experience like theirs, but nothing about dads. “This again made me feel like a failure. Then I thought of all the families who were worse off than us, and it was just an awful cycle of guilt and sadness. “Paula one morning caught me sobbing at the edge of our bed and I just opened up fully and told her everything I was feeling from that point on she was my rock. “Then one day I blurted it out to my manager. He was really supportive and referred me to occupational health, who got me the help I needed. This was the best thing I could have done for myself, and I was diagnosed with PTSD, severe depression and anxiety. “I was scared of how far I had slipped, but I was getting help and making changes to my day-to-day life, which made a big difference, and now the darkness has passed. “My goal was that I wanted my family to grow up in a house of love and laughter, and I needed to be the version of me I liked again. I needed to let go of the negative thoughts and realise that I had nothing to feel guilty about. And most of all, I needed to remember that Polly and Logan were better off with me in their lives. “The therapy helped me get there and it also brought me and Paula even closer together, because I started to share everything with her without feeling I was burdening her. We are now at a point where we look forwards more than we do backwards.” Polly and Logan are healthy and happy and Ben is now wanting to talk more openly about his feelings, in hopes that others don’t suffer alone. He is hosting a rock show with his band,

Fear Lies, to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity, and to say thank you for the care he and his wife received at the Jessop Wing. He would like to welcome anyone going through the same experiences to go along for support and advice. “I don’t want other dads, or anyone that has felt the same way, to be ashamed of Happier family: Ben got the help he needed – now he’s urging other fathers to seek support if they need it

I want to make sure no one living with PTSD ever feels like I did, or that they have to suffer alone.” Having PTSD isn't a choice or a sign of weakness, and it's important to remember that you are not alone. You don’t have to talk about the trauma if you don’t want to, but the support and companionship of others is an incredibly powerful tool for healing.

GET READY TO RUN! ATHLETES FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY WILL BE GATHERING IN LOXLEY NEXT MONTH. HANNAH SANDERS PREVIEWS THIS YEAR’S PERCY PUD 10K. ace up your trainers as Sheffield’s popular Percy Pud 10k is returning this December, and, with 2,700 entries, promises to be even bigger and better. Now in its 25th year, the popular Loxley race in which all runners receive a Christmas pud for their efforts, takes them along the picturesque Loxley Valley on the outskirts of Sheffield. It started as a Steel City Striders event and has grown in popularity from the first race in 1993 when 600 finished, to this year when the event was sold out within three hours of going live. Some runners will be donning their best Lycra and festive fancy dress in a bid to make new records and take home the £1,000 prize for setting a new course record, whilst others will be just happy to make it past the finish post. Last year, Olympian Eilish McColgan a middle distance athlete, crossed the finish line in 32 minutes and 32 seconds, beating the previous course record by around 80 seconds. Mohammed Abu-Rezeq was the first man to break the 30-minute barrier in 2016 with a time of 29 minutes and 57 seconds, and is planning to run again this year in an attempt

to beat his own record. For those who need some encouragement to get around the course, there will be pace runners between 40 to 65 minutes to help you achieve your target time. “Runners come from all over to take part in the Percy Pud. We have people from Liverpool and Manchester, to some from the Isle of White and London,” said race director, Richard Dunk. “The race is great fun for all involved, a brilliant way to help raise money for important charities and it helps promote the local area. The run also gets people into the Christmas spirit.” As it’s the 25th anniversary, participants will be given limited edition commemorative t-shirts. Runners will also get the traditional Christmas pudding when they finish the race. The Percy Pud run raises more than @SixerRMC

£100,000 annually for charities, and this year the money raised will go to St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield along with Changing Faces. They also will be making donations to other local charities around the Sheffield City Region. Changing Faces is a charity that began work in 1992 to help people who have a disfigurement find a way to live the live they want. They want each person they support to be living their life without anxiety or fear of being ignored, abused, harassed, restricted, rejected or ejected. This year, the race will be run in memory of Strider Trevor Burton, who sadly died during the summer. They will be selling a

ever mind a pint of the black stuff. With the Christmas season well and truly upon us, ours is a pint of the blue stuff. The Gill family have only been brewing Farmers Belgian Blue since 2006, but it seems the village of Bradfield - and beyond – couldn’t imagine Christmas without it. In fact, Bradfield Brewery sold a phenomenal 400,000 pints of the seasonal ale last year and are optimistic they will top this figure for 2017. “There’s always a buzz about the place when we do our first brew of the year of Belgian Blue because it means Christmas is officially here,” says John Gill. “It signifies a time when all hands are on deck to meet the demands of the period. Everyone comes

together to work hard as a team.” October is the busiest month for brewing at Bradfield, with an average of 100,000 pints of beer being made. At their busiest, Bradfield Brewery produced 400 barrels of beer in a week – that’s around 125,000 pints. The process starts with the arrival of lorry loads of the beer’s closely guarded, secret ingredients from Watt House Farm. It then takes around ten days to create the first pints, with the creation of bottles of Blue taking slightly longer. By late October, Belgian Blue is ready for launch and the first pint is pulled in the Nags Head Inn, the brewery’s own pub, just a mile away from where it is brewed. In the last couple of years, the beer has been launched at

a specific time, 4pm. When the chimes struck, beer lovers from near and far arrived once again for their first taste of the Christmas brew with its gorgeous berry overtones. Watt House Farm was originally a dairy farm, but when milk prices started to plummet in the early 2000s, John and his family decided to diversify. John’s son, Richard had always been a keen homebrewer and saw a way to turn this hobby into a business. This was much to the relief of Richard’s mother Susan, who was fed up of his equipment being set up on the kitchen table – the steam had made her wallpaper peel away. “Belgian Blue has been around since the beginning, but people don’t often realise that,” continues John. “One of the first pubs I remember having a pint of Blue in was the Old Robin Hood at Stannington, which has been converted into housing now.” Today, Belgian Blue travels much further than Stannington, with requests for the beer coming in from across the UK and Ireland, with one fan in Belfast requesting the blue brew for their festivities. One bottle even made it all the way to Jamaica, to celebrate Christmas in sunnier climes – just call John the Santa of the beer world. And of course, Belgian Blue isn’t the only highlight on the ale calendar. Bradfield Brewery are the proud producers of the awardwinning Farmers Blonde. Other beers in their permanent range include Farmers Stout and Farmers Brown Cow, which are perhaps unsurprisingly named after the breeds of cows that have graced the Gill family farm, while seasonal ales include Farmers Yellow Jersey, Farmers Poppy Ale and even our own very special Farmers Sixer pale ale. The Gill family have certainly had their fair share of ups and downs over the years – all of which are highlighted in the book, Mine’s a Pint: The Story of Bradfield Brewery, published by RMC Media in 2016. John and his team are now looking firmly

Imagine a 200 year old chapel filled with 30 Christmas trees, all lit up and decorated. A wonderful and awesome sight. This is what has happened at Brightholmlee Methodist Church, Wharncliffe Side for the last 3 years and will once again be “lighting up” in December 2017. All the trees are adorned with conventional decorations or done with a theme in mind. In the past we have had Lego, sunflowers, cars, teddie’s, colour themed and many more. We are supported by local individuals, companies and organisations who give money to sponsor a tree and by the local Junior School, Brownies, Sunday School and our Minister, Katie, who decorate the trees for pure pleasure. Many also provide some magnificent raffle prizes.

All the money raised goes to charity and this year we have decided to split our donations between local charities:

Friends of Sheffield Children’s Hospital Cavendish Care Centre Bluebell Wood Hospice Issabelles Appeal Brightholmlee Methodist Church will be opening its doors for this year’s festival from Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th December from 3pm to 7pm. A new era for G&M Lunt EXPERIENCED FUNERAL DIRECTOR MARTYN JOINS OLD-ESTABLISHED FAMILY FIRM. he clocks may be going back but things are moving forward at G&M Lunt, family funeral directors for over 80 years. Michael Lunt has announced that Martyn Askew, who is Woodseats born and bred with over 40 years in the profession, has joined the company as director of funeral services, responsible for the day to day running of the company after many years’ experience managing the John Fairest Funeral Homes. G & M Lunt was established by George Lunt in 1932 with his wife Mabel, son Jack and daughter Mary, who joined the company as the business grew. Michael joined in 1969. In 1976 George passed away and Mary’s son Andrew joined in 1985. Sadly Jack passed away in 1987, so Michael and Andrew ran the business together until Andrew retired. Michael carried on running the business for many years with the support of his dedicated staff. Now time has come to hand over the reins to Martyn, a friend for over 40 years and an outstanding funeral director. Michael Lunt will still be actively involved in the business on a day to day basis.

En garde! Pupils take up fencing lessons After school clubs have taken on a new level for the pupils at Wharncliffe Side Primary School, with fencing having been recently added to the list. This exciting sport has been on offer to junior pupils this term and the children have been taught basic fencing skills.

Earlier this year, two teachers at Wharncliffe Side primary school took part in the Core Coaching Programme delivered by LINKs School Partnership in association with British Fencing. Nigel Hartley and Esther Loveday successfully completed their training and have been able to deliver a six-week fencing club to 10 enthusiastic young swashbucklers. “At Wharncliffe Side, we aim to give children the chance to try a sport they may

never have had a go at before,” says PE subject leader Mr Hartley. One of the children added: “I wanted to do it because I wanted to try something different. We’ve learnt skills and new tactics and every week we’ve been able to fence against each other. We get to wear proper suits and have safety swords.” The six-week course finished with a well fought competition between the young fencers.

Gallery explores role of art and faith in promoting wellness Many people would agree that creativity offers benefits for wellbeing, but there is also a growing interest in doing less. Retreats and mindfulness courses are often promoted as a way of finding wellbeing in our hectic lives. A forthcoming exhibition at Cupola Gallery called Amid by Shaeron Caton-Rose presents responses to residencies in two different faith based communities. This will be taking part from 21 October to 18 November with a preview evening on Friday 20 October at 7:30pm. The exhibition is an installation comprised of numerous elements including a series of works on paper, utilising various printmaking techniques, golden leaves floating in water, suspended fabric garments and a series of boxes hiding/revealing treasures contained within. “In 2015, I spent six weeks with the Community of the Resurrection, a monastic order based in Mirfield, Yorkshire. Home is where the history is hilst Britain was still in the grips of austerity, young Jack Watson had everything he wanted and more on Proctor Place – his home for the first few years of his life. Friends, family and the long-gone Hillsborough Kinema – the picture house that gave him his lifelong love of films – was everything he needed within a 500-yard radius of his house. Jack Watson’s book - A Nice Tailend From Mr Burrows - originally started out as a few personal notes for relatives about his early life in Hillsborough and, later, nearby Stannington. But it soon grew to something far bigger as friends and family encouraged him to do more. Jack Watson said: “We were one of three terrace houses that shared a communal yard covered in sinkholes. We had an outdoor toilet, no hot water and the only heating was an open fire in one room. “But we wanted for nothing. I experienced everything from the streets of Hillsborough and Stannington – I was influenced by people around

Unlike the previous RS4, which boasted a high-revving naturally aspirated V8, the new RS4 is powered by a 2.9-litre biturbo V6 making 444 bhp and 442.5 lb ft of torque, an increase of 124.4 lb ft over the previous model. The interior of the RS4 is impeccable. It’ll come with the company’s infamous ‘virtual cockpit’ arrangements and built with a fit and finish only the Germans can achieve. Transmission is an eight-speed auto job with Quattro all-wheel drive. Prices start from £61,625.

The latest Mondeo range will now have a new sports and luxury specification. In short the Mondeo range will drop from seven trim levels to only five. Starting off at £19,445 we have the Zetec Edition, then there’s the ST-Line both existing and new trim level, then we have the Titanium Level and the range-topping Vignale. As standard, all five models have navigation, DAB, autonomous braking to mitigate or avoid low-speed collisions at under 31mph, front/rear parking sensors and cruise control with speed limiter.
