Feeling on top of the world AFTER OVERCOMING LEUKAEMIA – TWICE – CHRIS CLARKE TOOK ON A MONUMENTAL CHALLENGE TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CHARITY HE CREDITS WITH SAVING HIS LIFE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hen you’re stood on a knife edge, 3,000 feet up one of England’s highest mountains, Helvellyn, you do get a certain perspective. And not just a literal one but an emotional one too. For 31-yearold Chris Clarke, it was a stand-out moment in his life.

In fact, Chris, a Chapeltown native, was thankful to be there at all after being diagnosed with leukaemia, a form of blood cancer, not once, but twice, the first time at just nine years old.

See what I mean about perspective? To have the strength and support to deal with something like that at such a young age is testament to us all. As we catch-up in the comfort of a Broomhill coffee shop, it’s hard to fathom just what he’s gone through and how it’s affected not just his life but his family’s too. He’s happy, humble and, in a word, inspirational. He admitted that it’s only now that he appreciates what everyone has done for him, “I’m proud to have my friends and family,” says Chris. “It’s only when you get a bit older

you start to think what’s my mum and dad been through, what’s my brother been through… even the donor himself, what’s he been through, does he know he’s actually saved someone’s life?

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to my consultant Dr Vora and ward M3. The nurses were amazing, it wasn’t a hospital environment as such, they didn’t make it like that.”

Chris was first diagnosed seemingly by chance. “I used to play football at Oughtibridge and I was always tired and cold and wanted to come off at half time,” he recalls. “I used to get a lot of stick about that, as you do at that age, but I ended up going to the GP and getting some blood tests done.

“I was just about to go out sledging when the GP knocked on the front door and said ‘you need to go to hospital now’. So I went to the Northern General, had some more blood tests done and then shipped to the Children’s straight away, not really knowing why.”

diagnosed but treatment was started straight away and after year it was confirmed he was in remission. A holiday to America followed, courtesy of the Make A Wish Foundation, a non-profit organisation who arrange experiences described as ‘wishes’ to children diagnosed with critical illnesses. Family life had started to return to some sort of normality.

But two weeks after returning, tragedy struck. Again. His leukaemia had returned.

“That was the day, I thought to myself, I can’t go through it again, the treatment everything like that,” says Chris. “The treatment is sometimes worse than the illness, it was horrible.

“I got 100 per cent radiotherapy everywhere. Then I was down for a bone marrow transplant and they had to look for a donor. All my family were tested but no-one was a match. A couple of months after that we got a phonecall to say they’d found a 98 per cent match, so we went with that.”

Chris’s biggest thank you – and the reason why he was stood on top of a mountain – is perhaps best reserved for Anthony Nolan, a charity who use a register to match potential stem cell donors to blood cancer and blood disorder patients in need of transplants, whom he credits with saving his life.

A stem cell transplant is offered to patients who have a condition that affects their bone marrow or blood and is often their best chance of survival. Healthy stem cells are introduced via the bloodstream where they begin to grow and create healthy red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

It sounds straightforward but was far from it, explains Chris: “It wipes your whole system – I got a new blood group. The bad thing is your organs reject it because it’s new everything so I had to stay in a room for a couple of months and only my mum, a doctor and nurse were allowed in. I was in a coma for a week, I caught pneumonia, I’m epileptic.

It was horrific.”

Thankfully, the transplant worked and Chris made a recovery. Despite missing a fair chunk of school, which he described as “hard”, with the help of a tutor he caught up and now works, ironically, for the NHS. After starting out in medical records at the Hallamshire, he’s now a business analyst at the Northern General where his responsibilities include, among other things, improving patient care, something he is very proud of.

It’s this pride, and recent contact with his anonymous donor, that inspired Chris to raise money for the charity. A keen walker, he decided to take on a challenge as part of their Walking Together fundraising campaign – and roped a few of his friends in for good measure.

After plenty of research, he settled on the 3000 Sunset Challenge, which sees walkers climb England’s four highest peaks – Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Scafell and Scafell Pike – in

daylight hours. It was a total ascent of 3,000m and length of about 25 miles which took them over some of the toughest terrain in the Lake District, including Ullock Ridge on Skiddaw and Striding Edge (the ‘knife edge’) on Helvellyn. It wasn’t challenge for the faint-hearted.

“We had about six months to train,” explains Chris. “We did a lot in the Peak District, joined a gym and did the Yorkshire Three Peaks a couple of times. We started on Skiddaw mountain at 4.30am. The scout took us up something that was literally like this” – Chris gestures with his hand the steepness of the incline – “for about an hour. One of the lads was dropping far, far behind and I’m thinking ‘what are we doing?’. It was a shock to the system.”

Press on they did though and despite a couple dropping out through severe cramp, one of which was Chris’ older brother Nick, the group completed the walk in about 14 and a half hours, which broke the record for the walk with the organisers, Lakeland Mountain Guides.

“I’m chuffed to bits. All in all it was a very tough challenge but really satisfying,” says

Chris. “The lads enjoyed it and I think we raised about £2,800. Some want to do something next year.”

It wasn’t the toughness, or the heatwave in which they completed the challenge, that was the stand-out memory though for Chris, who explains: “We came down the second one and what was really nice was some random bloke coming towards us and giving us £20. He saw us wearing the [Anthony Nolan] t-shirts, didn’t know us but obviously recognised the charity. That kind of thing spurred us on.”

On their return, Chris and friends hosted a party at The Wharncliffe Arms who had been instrumental in raising money for the charity too – they raised over £1,000 themselves. No doubt a pint was well deserved.

We’ll certainly raise a glass to Chris, a true hero and inspiration to us all.

Pre-nuptial agreements – just how binding are they?

HERE SHE DISCUSSES THE COMMON QUESTION, ARE PRE OR POSTNUPS WORTH THE PAPER THEY ARE WRITTEN ON? t’s now eight years since the case of Radmacher was heard by the Supreme Court. This was the case that changed the landscape in relation to prenuptial agreements – and yet I’m still often asked “is a pre-nup worth the paper it’s written on?”

And I answer, “Yes, a pre-nup can often carry a lot of weight. But it depends what it says and how it was entered into…”

As with many aspects of family law there are misconceptions and myths. For example, the myth of the “common-law spouse”.

Living together for a certain period does not automatically give people the same rights as a married couple. Also, the “quickie divorce” – there’s no such thing as that either, whatever the media may tell us.

In a world of misinformation and “fake news” it’s understandable that people don’t know much about the realities of pre-nups.

Not so very long ago they were considered unromantic, and reserved for Hollywood Alisters.

This is no longer the case. If done “right” pre-nups can be incredibly useful and can avoid the acrimony and uncertainty that come from the end of a marriage.

I

If a couple divorces without a pre-nup (or a post-nup – which is an agreement reached after the date of the marriage), the court has a very broad discretion to make financial orders. It can, for example, transfer properties from one person to the other, order the sale of a business or home and/or split pensions between the couple. It can order lifelong maintenance payments to be made from one person to the other. In coming to what it considers to be the right outcome, the court takes into account all the resources available.

This can include inheritances, whether these came in before the marriage, during it, or after separation. What the court believes to be the right outcome, might not be not what either party would have chosen.

A pre or post-nup allows a couple to exercise autonomy and to set the boundaries.

As long as each party comes out with enough to meet their needs, they can agree to protect things like family businesses or inheritances. A couple can also agree a clean break i.e. that the financial ties between them come to an end.

For a pre-nup to carry weight both people have to enter into it freely; they each have to

take their own legal advice and the agreement has to fall within the parameters of overall fairness. It can’t therefore provide that one person gets everything and the other receives nothing.

The court will not uphold a pre-nup which is so clearly unfair that it leaves one party in financial dire straits. A judge might instead alter the pre-nup to ensure there is a fair outcome, but this award might still be less generous than if there had been no pre-nup at all. The court is generally prepared to respect the fact that the parties have chosen to have their own agreement, and it tries not to trespass on this any more than is strictly necessary.

Winter warmer BELGIAN BLUE FLOWS AGAIN FOR CHRISTMAS 2018.

hristmas arrives early for Bradfield Brewery fans – Belgian Blue is available once more!

Every year since it was first produced in 2005, this seasonal ale has grown in popularity and this year is gearing up to be the best yet. Farmers Belgian Blue is a 4.9 per cent ABV ale with Christmas berry overtones and a slight blue tint to the head, making it a well-loved and distinctive winter warmer.

This year’s first barrel of Belgian Blue was available at The Nags Head in late October and over 150 pints flew over the bar in just over two hours.

Farmers Belgian Blue was first created in 2005, the year Bradfield Brewery began operating. Head brewer Paul Ward, who continues to develop mouth-watering ales for Bradfield Brewery, came up with the brew following his ambition to introduce something truly unique into the cask ale industry.

With the idea for a unique taste, Paul shopped around for the best tasting ingredients and many were tried before he settled with the winter berries. In the style of magical wonderland, these berries created the amazing taste and texture he was looking for, as well as looking stunning with its velvet colours and a truly unique blue-tinted head.

The name of the festive ale was an obvious choice, following on with the Famers Ale theme and naming their ales with different cattle breeds – the Belgian Blue breed sprung to mind and there it was born – Farmers Belgian Blue.

Belgian Blue is available in cask, bottles and five-litre mini kegs from Bradfield Brewery’s on-site shop. The shop opening hours are 8am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturdays. The shop will also be opening 10am-2pm on Sundays and until 7pm on Thursday and Fridays, throughout

December, up to Christmas. December is also your chance to try before you buy with sampling weekends taking place, 10am-4pm on Saturdays and 10am-2pm on Sundays.

Whilst enjoying continuing success with their range of cask ales, Bradfield Brewery are also celebrating the opening of their second Brewery Tap, The King & Miller in Deepcar.

After acquiring the pub from Admiral Taverns in April this year, the Brewery carried out an intensive refurbishment of the venue, which re-opened its doors to the public last month.

pint, the pub is managed by Natalie Wild and Tom Redman, who bring with them a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry.

Boasting a three-quarter size snooker table, wood-burning stove and family-friendly seating areas, the pub is proving popular with Bradfield Brewery fans and local residents.

The Kitchen is currently closed whilst further works are underway but it is hoped that there will be a food offering introduced in the new year.

ocal amateur football clubs are often the heart of a community – a focal point where people come together to celebrate a love of sport. But the very best can also reach out with a helping hand during times of tragedy.

That is certainly the case with Wisewood Junior FC, which began in 1988 with one team and now has over 25, ranging from six to 60-year-olds. This is an all-inclusive club with teams for veteran over-45s, girls and two disability teams.

As the club has grown in size and stature it has been ranked as a Community Standard football club, the highest standard you can achieve in football echelons.

Some of those teams have enjoyed great success, but beyond the goals and glory, at junior and adult levels, football has proved to be a great social medium both on and off the pitch.

Players and spectators alike have spent the last three decades forming strong bonds of friendship by playing with or against each other; some still continue to play into their 40s ,50s and even 60s and the latest

development is walking football.

Club chairman Steve Shepherd says: “Many lifelong friendships have been established through this happy medium of local community football and long may it continue.”

However, while the club has gone from strength to strength there have been some dark times, no more so than in 2014 when the local Stannington community lost four very good and very close friends, all aged in their early 50s, to prostate cancer, heart attacks and a brain aneurysm.

“They were all linked in the local community football scene either through playing, as spectators, or as unpaid volunteers.

They were the very heart and soul of the local community that we all live in and are very proud of,” says Steve.

In the years following these tragedies, this tight-knit community pulled together and monies were raised by friends, families, and colleagues from all walks of life. As a result various charities benefitted: Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK and The British Heart Foundation.

“But we hope the main beneficiaries going forward will be the local community in Stannington,” Steve adds. “Now there is a community defibrillator sited outside The Village Store, which is registered with the Yorkshire Ambulance Service for the benefit of the local community.

“Many thanks to Alan and Tracey for allowing us to site the defibrillator outside The Village Store, and also to Paul Bobby Womack for the materials he donated and electrical installation work he carried out.

“We have also provided a defibrillator at both our junior football sites at Black Lane, Loxley and Ben Lane at Wisewood which, unfortunately, due to the remote nature of both facilities, are not available to the local community at this time except on match days.

“Hopefully we will never have to use them but it is good to know they are there and all players, officials and spectators will have the benefit.

“We raised in total £3,500 to provide the three defibrillators and we want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to those who helped us along the way.”

The local fundraisers who helped provide the £3,500 for three defibrillators included the following whose help was essential: • Wisewood parents who completed a sponsored run.

• Simon, Abbie, and Demi Mullen at The Peacock, Stannington.

• Minnie’s football team for the race night and fundraising event at the Rose and Crown, Stannington.

• The ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ charity boxing match between Brian Smith – “Mr Wisewood” – and Tony Crookes from Betfred.

• Family and friends for their support in attending the above events.

Chapeltown Glass Window & Facia Company Crawshaw’s Butchers Crawshaw’s Butchers was founded by John’s father Brian when he opened their first shop in Stocksbridge in 1955. Even as a schoolboy, much of John’s spare time was spent working in the shop. “I always seemed to be working there,” he recalls.

John’s Saturday job in the shop was cleaning and washing down, from there he progressed to burger making. Percy Pud in demand After the London Marathon and the Great North Run, which race in the UK sells out the quickest? You may be surprised to learn it is the annual Steel City Striders’ Percy Pud 10k in Loxley Valley.

This year’s race sold out its 3,000 places online in 2hrs 50 mins... a personal best for Percy!

Race director Richard Dunk increased the number of runners by 100 to 3,000 and this year the race will be held on Sunday 2 December. All finishers will receive a large luxury Christmas pudding and a packet of custard along with a runners’ lightweight soft touch Fluo Yellow Beenie Hat with the Percy Pud logo embroidered on the front.

The race from the Loxley Valley Park runs alongside the Damflask Reservoir to The Plough pub at Lower Bradfield and back.

Attracting hundreds of runners, some in Christmas hats and fancy dress, raising money for lots of local charities along with club runners, for all of them the race signals the start of Christmas.

Christmas fair Grenoside Scout and Guide Group will be holding their Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning on Saturday 24 November, 10.30am to 12.30pm, at the Scout and Guide Headquarters on Salt Box Lane, Grenoside, Sheffield. Success at the Show Chapeltown Village Show was another huge success for the Chapeltown Forum. The City of Sheffield Teachers’ Choir celebrates its 50th anniversary

Sacred Heart Church Christmas Fayre takes place on Sunday 25 November from 12noon in the hall – entrance on Ripley Street, Hillsborough. There will be many stalls, raffles and refreshments, all are welcome.

On 6 November 1968 David Clover held the first rehearsal of the Sheffield Teachers’ Choir, as it was then known. The singers were music teachers in Sheffield schools, some music specialists, some not. David was Sheffield’s music adviser and he moved mountains to encourage and inspire people of all ages and musical abilities to make music in whatever way.

David passed away in January 1979, but his Teachers’ Choir has carried on and celebrates its 50th anniversary with a concert on 10 November.

The programme will include songs of several genres which have marked significant events, both at home and abroad, in the choir’s half century history. There will be arrangements made by David Clover and one of his own compositions as well as choral classics and songs of a lighter nature too.

Get healed Hillsborough Healing Room is offering a free drop-in session every Tuesday between 10.30am and 12noon. The sessions are at Hillsborough Arena and are free to anyone who wants to drop in.

Hottest of the bunch SHEFFIELD PROVES ITSELF AS A PIPING PROPERTY HOTSPOT. ropCast, the UK’s first house-selling weather forecast, can analyse buyer demand and can now see which locations in Yorkshire are piping hot on the property market, and which postcodes are in the shade.

The areas in the top ten hotspots are all sellers’ markets, while those in the coldest spots are buyers’ markets. The reason the property postcode forecast was set up is to help homeowners find out how easy or hard it will be to sell their property.

The aim is to help sellers set a realistic price using the heat ratings, which range from very hot to very cold.

These ratings are determined by the number of properties on the market in a particular postcode and the percentage that are under offer or sold subject to contract.

Our very own city of Sheffield is the hottest of the bunch when it comes to the property market, with seven postcodes in the top ten hottest areas in Yorkshire.

On a more positive note, Anees explained: “However, there is now great demand for commercial properties, and a planning application submitted for a major revamp of the Hillsborough Exchange which includes the construction of nearly 80 new flats above

Sheffield’s scorching heat isn’t surprising though, since average house prices in the city are relatively low considering it’s a wellconnected, large city with plenty of amenities.

To top it off, the Steel City is also close to countryside with quality accommodation and many big employers.

Sheffield actually has the biggest student retention rates in the whole of Britain.

esidents of Freedom Road have been celebrating after receiving brand new Freeview Play TVs which could save them up to £400 a year.

To celebrate Freeview’s new TV ad campaign, “Join the Free Love Freeway”, Freeview decided to kit out the aptly named road with new sets, offering residents on the street a brand new Freeview Play TV in partnership with Sheffield-based TV and appliance retailer Crampton and Moore. To mark the occasion, Freeview hosted a street party, complete with a marching brass band, face painting and film crew.

The residents of Freedom Road are among the many viewers making the switch to the subscription free TV platform. Freeview has grown its viewer base faster than any other major TV platform since 2016, making it the most widely watched in the UK. Research conducted by Freeview shows that over half of Brits (53 per cent) are open to switching from a paid-for TV subscription service to a free option, letting them gain access to 95 per cent of the nation’s most watched TV shows without a monthly bill.

Resident Ben Drury of Freedom Road said: “I’ve been spending £65 per month on my TV service, but all of my favourite shows were available for free on Freeview Play. There was

no reason not to switch, and it was so easy – I’m saving money and still getting to watch the shows I love. I just wish I’d realised sooner.”

John Craske, Freeview, said: “We’re so confident in the programming, functionality and flexibility that Freeview Play offers we were prepared to put our money where our mouth is, giving a whole street the chance to upgrade to a Freeview Play TV. We wanted to make this a nationwide opportunity but our finance director just wouldn’t allow it.”

With Freeview Play, viewers can watch a massive variety of programmes with easy access to both live and on demand TV, and most devices have access to top up with streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It has never been easier to become a Freeview Play viewer, with the service built into nearly all new TV models, and if you have an older TV – Freeview Play boxes start at £70.

Whether you’re newly engaged and you’ve hired out a local venue for your family and friends, or your birthday is coming up and you fancy a quiet one with your nearest and dearest, there’s only so many times guests can politely pass around a platter of cold sausage rolls.

SMALLER PARTIES Food If you’re having an intimate party at home you’re more likely to know what it is your guests do or don’t like. It also gives you a chance to be more creative with the food and drink you serve as you’re not having to make huge servings.

If it’s a more casual get together you’re hosting, it can be tempting to reach for those frozen bags of party food, but why not go the extra mile and whip up some snacks from scratch?

Try making your own mini chicken fajitas or smoked salmon blinis, and if you really can’t resist the temptation of a good old sausage roll, why not mix it up and make some more unusual flavours such as caramelised apple and fennel or even chorizo?

Hosting a full on dinner party? Don’t bite off more than you can chew. If the kitchen doesn’t call your name don’t put pressure on yourself to deliver a five-star meal to your guests, as you’ll more than likely end up scuffling with your partner and not getting dinner on the table until 10.30 (we’ve all seen Come Dine with Me).

recipes out there, from chicken to beef and lamb or even veggie. Easy to put together and still full of flavour, a good slow-cooked stew or curry is bound to please your guests.

If you’re confident you can whip up a fabulous three-course meal there are plenty of dishes that shouldn’t take you away from your guests all night. Start with some halloumi stuffed peppers or breaded mozzarella sticks, then a nice slow-roasted shoulder of lamb will always go down well and can be left to cook in the oven without much maintenance.

When it comes to desserts, no matter the size of your party there are plenty of sweet treats you can put together before your guests even arrive. Cheesecakes and roulades are easy to make and can be kept in the fridge until you’re ready to serve your final course.

Drinks A bottle of wine or fizz is always going to go down well as the majority of us love a tipple.

Grab a few of your favourites and consider adding cocktails to the menu too. Even if it’s just a simple Bellini or some pre-made strawberry gin, offering something a bit different is sure to impress your guests.

LARGER PARTIES Food As the numbers of your party increase, so does the difficulty of pulling off an impressive feast.

Don’t spread yourself too thin and plan an extensive meal that you won’t have time to enjoy yourself. If cost isn’t an issue, consider hiring a caterer to prepare your favourite dishes for you. If you’re on more of a budget, don’t worry as there are plenty of ways to feed larger groups.

A buffet is always a safe option as it increases the chances that there will be something for everyone. If you’re hosting a party that’s likely to last a fair few hours, opt for dishes that can be enjoyed hot as well as cold so people can pick throughout the day or night. Think bacon and cheese straws, handmade pizzas and nachos.

If you’ve got the facilities to keep things heated, consider a large batch of chilli or a make your own taco station.

Cakes and donuts are sure to be a hit too, but don’t stop at a run of the mill lemon drizzle, as although it might be the UK’s favourite, it can seem a little boring. If it’s an engagement party, why not opt for cake pops decorated as brides and grooms? If it’s a birthday party, why not use the dessert to celebrate the guest of honour? Find a dessert you love and add a personal touch.

Drinks Getting drinks ready for a big party can be quite tricky as it’s not always easy to tell what you’ll get through. Nobody wants to be the one called on to nip to the shop for a mid-

party ice run, so make sure you over rather than underestimate on that front!

Bartenders can be a great help when you’re hosting a large party, but they don’t come cheap. There are plenty of cocktails that can be made in large batches if you’re not wanting to splash out. We do it with Pimms in the summer, so who’s to say we can’t do the same in the colder months?

Favourites such as mulled wine or cider can expect a warm reception as the weather starts to turn, and a spiced rum or pomegranate punch is sure to fight off that winter chill too. A NEW INITIATIVE SEES HMRC MAKE VAT MORE MANAGEABLE. ringing tax into the digital age is high on HMRC’s agenda, with the introduction of its Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative.

We all do business, banking and pay bills online, so why not our tax too?

Originally announced in 2015 by George Osborne, Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s revolutionary plan to make the UK one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world.

With the focus on reducing the amount of work for taxpayers and businesses and making tax and VAT more manageable and easier to understand, it is also designed to reduce the amount of errors made – which can lead to under or over payments of tax, penalties and interest charges.

Initially, MTD will only apply to VAT from April 2019 but eventually, HMRC hopes to bring other taxes such as income tax and corporation tax into the scope of MTD. If you’re a VAT-registered business with turnover over £85,000 then MTD will apply to you and you will need to keep digital records and file a VAT return via MTD-compliant software from April 2019.

Although 99 per cent of VAT returns are already filed online, most of them are filed by logging in to the Government Gateway. If you must comply with MTD for VAT, you will no longer be able to use the Government Gateway. Instead you will have to file your VAT return using software. HMRC have said they will not be providing any free solutions themselves.

Contacting HMRC will also be much simpler through web chats or secure messages, much like how you’d manage your accounts via online banking.

However, according to a study by Quickbooks, 41 per cent of small business owners were still unaware of Making Tax Digital, and although 22 per cent were aware of what it is, they are only planning to file their taxes digitally if they face financial penalties.

Animal attraction THERE’S GREAT GOLF TO BE HAD IN SOUTHERN LINCOLNSHIRE, JUST DON’T GET DISTRACTED BY THE WILDLIFE, WRITES ANDY WAPLE. here were Bambis as well as birdies in evidence during my recent golfing break to QHotels’ Belton Woods resort, near Grantham.

Roe and fallow deer made a welcome appearance, casualty grazing in the rough along the front nine on the Woodside course, the best stretch of the resort’s 36-hole layout.

Sadly, the birdies were not a signal of the quality of our play but of the feathered variety. They lifted our spirits nevertheless.

Firstly, a green woodpecker with its yellowgreen plumage, bright red cap and black face mask foraged for ants along a fairway before darting for refuge in a large oak tree as we approached.

It was far more graceful than the raucous gaggle of geese stuffing their beaks by the water’s edge in front of one of the greens on the Lakes course.

This parade of wildlife made it hard to believe that the four-star Belton Woods resort is located just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the busy A1 Great North Road, and
