Hillsborough leads the way Christmas decorations are the first steps on the path to regenerate Hillsborough. And there’s much more to come. ‘TWAS the month before Christmas and eager shoppers fill the snow-trodden streets, peering through the warm windows of independent shops selling a range of gifts and treats, all against a backdrop of fairy lights and festive cheer. Add in the smell of mulled wine spices in the air and the distant bass tones of a brass band performing ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ and the image of a winter wonderland instantly springs to mind. But this is not some quaint Gingerbread German town or Alpine resort, this is Hillsborough. Or at least it could be. The snow might be a stretch too far but, thanks to a group of local like-minded business people, is hoped that the streets of this north Sheffield suburb will be
buzzing once again in the run up to Christmas. Uniting to form ‘Hillsborough Together’, the group has received £200,000 from Sheffield City Council to regenerate and reinvigorate the Hillsborough area their first move will be to bring Christmas lights back to the area for the first time in over a decade. It’s a small step but one that will bring a touch of cheer to Hillsborough, encouraging residents to shop local and support the businesses on their doorstep. “We all own businesses in the area and see the benefits of improving the place where we live and work, not just for us but for the community as a whole,” said a spokesperson for the group. “Christmas is a great place to start and we want to make Hillsborough more vibrant for residents and visitors alike.”

An artist’s impression of how the Christmas lights could look
“Christmas is a great place to start and we want to make Hillsborough more vibrant for residents and visitors alike.”
The funding comes from Sheffield City Council’s £2million Economic Recovery Fund, which was set up in March 2021 in acknowledgement of the huge strain the city’s economy is under, particularly those sectors hardest hit by Covid-19 trading restrictions. The fund opened to project ideas that would support the city centre, district centres and local centres to reopen and get back on their feet. Out of 50 applications for the small fund (up to £50k) and 30 expressions of interest for the large fund (up to £200k), Sheffield City Council chose just five small projects and seven larger ones, of which Hillsborough Together was one. Like many regional shopping centres, Hillsborough has suffered of late but the group are aiming to arrest this decline and bring back some optimism - and pride - to the area. As well as the Christmas lights, which will be installed on Langsett Road, Middlewood Road, Bradfield Road and Holme Lane, Hillsborough Together are also encouraging independent shop, salon or hospitality owners to dress up their windows for the festive season. “We wanted to inject a bit of fun into the area too,” said the group. “Christmas windows encourage shoppers inside and all add to the festive atmosphere.”
Lego®Christmas Bear Trail 25th Nov - 9th Dec Taking a further Santa-sized step into encouraging shoppers into the area, and what will be particularly attractive to families with young children, Hillsborough Together are creating a Lego Christmas Bear Trail, which will run from Saturday 25 November to Saturday 9 December. During this two-week period, eight bespoke Lego bears, made by Bricks and Bits Toy Shop on Dixon Road, will be placed in shops around Hillsborough and each will be holding something Christmas related. It could be a candy cane it could be a Christmas pudding it could be something else entirely. The only way to find out is for children to visit one of these shops and pick up a trail sheet, which, once completed, can be handed in to one of the participating outlets. All entries will be entered into a prize draw with the first three winners receiving one of the bespoke bears, plus a £50 voucher to spend in Bricks and Bits whilst ten runners-up will receive a £10 voucher. These will be presented at a special ceremony at a to be confirmed Hillsborough venue with local celebrities in attendance.

Looking forward HILLSBOROUGH Together’s plans don’t stop at Christmas and they are already looking ahead to 2022. • A street cleaning initiative will start in the spring and plans are already in place to remove the graffiti that blights many of the shutters on closed shops. One idea, and one that has worked really well in Orchard Square in the centre and in other parts of the city, is to invite artists to decorate these shutters, which will not only discourage future graffiti but make the streets look much more attractive too, particularly when shops have closed for the evening. • To complement this, flags will also be installed on lampposts in the area with the simple slogan ‘Please shop locally’. It’s a straightforward message but one that is at the heart of what Hillsborough Together are aiming to achieve. • “We want the trams to bring shoppers in, not take them away,” said a spokesperson for the group. “We’re here to make a change and the funding has created the opportunity for us to do this. Now, more than ever, your local independent shops and businesses need your support. Hopefully we can create a more welcoming and attractive environment for them to thrive.” • Hillsborough Together intends to install benches in the area, encouraging people to stay longer, as well as
installing a covered secure bike shed for those who prefer greener modes of transport. Another initiative being discussed is the installation of hanging baskets into the area to add a splash of colour. • Seasonality is also high on Hillsborough Together’s agenda and could be addressed in part with the introduction of pop-up market events that focus on, for example, arts, crafts or food. These could be held three or four times a year depending on feasibility. • The group also hold a hope to create more a business community in the area, either through a forum or trade association, and plan to offer support to businesses by offering training and advice, whether that be with bookkeeping or social media. • “This is an exciting time for Hillsborough,” added a spokesperson for the group. “As I’ve already said, we’re here to make a change and a change for the better. We want to make the area more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors. By working together we can bring the buzz back to Hillsborough.“

PROMOTION
Don’t get caught cold NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO ENUSRE YOUR HEATING SYSTEM IS RUNNING AT ITS MOST EFFICIENT. e’ve all seen and read the doommongering in the media about rising fuel bill prices and although there is an inevitability about it, there are ways in which we can negate the increased costs, particularly as the cold weather starts to bite. For instance, ensuring your heating system is running at its most efficient is a good place to start. This is where Bumfords can step in and help with their range of service packages. “Ensuring the reliability of your boiler is of high importance for many, as when they are not looked after they can be very expensive and inconvenient to fix,” said managing director Neil Bumford. “It is highly recommended that all domestic boilers are serviced annually as this can save you a lot of hassle and expense in the long run.” A standard boiler service with Bumfords starts at £79.99 and can identify many common problems that can arise with general wear and tear before they become a significant and/or expensive problem. Most boilers and central heating systems can also suffer from the build up of a black sludge, mainly made up of iron oxide, which can cause blockages in the boilers heat exchanger, radiators and pumps. This has a significant effect on the efficiency of the boiler and central heating system leading to higher fuel and water consumption as the system works harder and so resulting in higher annual bills.
W
16 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
In many cases, small repairs or maintenance are required but if your boiler needs replacing, Bumfords can help with that too. “We have been installing and servicing a range of boilers and heating systems since 1968 including gas, oil, LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas), solid fuel and renewable systems,” added Neil. “Our team of highly professional and fully qualified engineers will ensure that your boiler, heating and hot water systems continue to work at their maximum efficiency and reliability.” Award-winning Bumfords offer a free, no obligation, on site survey by appointment where one of their highlytrained engineers will aid you through the design of your heating system and provide you with all of the appropriate options for your requirements. A quotation will then be issued and once a firm fixed quotation price has been agreed, work on installing your heating
system will begin. They offer zero percent finance on the installation of selected new boiler and heating systems. Neil and his team can also install radiators, underfloor heating as well as smart thermostats – they are a certified professional Nest installer – the latter of which work in tandem with your heating system to make your home more efficient. Bumfords, established in 1968, are also a Which? Trusted Trader with a score of 4.8 out of 5. “Our engineers offer boiler and heating servicing and repair solutions throughout North Sheffield and the surrounding areas,” concluded Neil. Contact them now for more information or to arrange a free survey, either by calling 01226 749300 or email info@bumfords.com, or alternatively you can visit their website www.bumfords.com. Five reasons to be cheerful
Charity coffee morning
Winter can make life difficult, but it is also a season to savour.
Chesterfield company Flamecare held a McMillan coffee and cake day, raising over £1,200. They would like to thank everyone who supported them by attending and local businesses for raffle donations.
• Winter is beautiful Getting out for a walk and enjoying your surroundings is a great way to keep both body and mind healthy. • Birds flock to our gardens Put out sunflower seeds, peanuts or fat balls, and don’t forget to provide some water for them too. • The festive season Sending cards or letters to those you love, watching Christmas films, spending time with family and friends, or simply wishing someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ in the street – it all gives you a sense of warmth and hope. • Snuggling up with a hot drink and a good film or book Snuggling under a blanket with a mug of something warm and something to watch or read is a comforting thing to do at any time of year. • Without Winter there would be no Spring One of the best things about the British seasons is that as one departs, another arrives. If you’re concerned about staying warm and well this Winter, Age UK (0800 169 65 65) has a useful guide called ‘Winter Wrapped Up’. If you need a printout of it, please call us and we’d be happy to help. At AHM Installations we prioritise quality of life over everything. We enjoy helping people, which includes listening to the challenges our customers face at home. One of the customers we spoke to about their concerns for this Winter has disabilities. We’re delighted that he can now enjoy a nice warm shower on a cold winter’s day because he feels so much safer with his new shower cubicle, grab bars and seat, which we recently installed. Call our family-run team on 0800 731 6495. AHM Installations install safe, affordable, stylish bathrooms for anyone with limited mobility.

Remembrance takes place in November but this year, as well as their usual service, which will be held on Sunday 14 November, they will be creating a very special Remembrance display – and need your help. “We want to create a moving memorial through a carpet of poppies to lay across the floor of the military chapel,” said Sheffield Cathedral’s development manager, Ben Rossi. “We’re asking you to knit, crochet, embroider, make or even draw your own poppies, we don’t mind.” Appealing to schools, community groups or people at home, send your creations to Sheffield Cathedral by Friday 22 October and they will form part of the display. During half-term, which runs from

The spirit of Christmas FROM PREMIUM BOTTLES TO EVERYDAY TIPPLES, EMBRACE THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH THIS CLASSY SELECTION. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here are time-honoured traditions that have to be observed at Christmas. The ritual is enshrined in The five commandments we all know so well. 1. Thou shalt attend the office Christmas party 2. Thou shalt beg forgiveness the next morning, and thy thoughts will be cringeworthy (“Did I really kiss a man on the forehead?”) 3. Thou shalt order a multitude of kitchen gadgets from Lakeland and place them in gift boxes. Thence they will be banished to an unknown cupboard for all time 4. Thou shalt not refuse a fourth helping of sprouts and turkey, be thou ever so full 5. Thou shalt drink spirits. It’s the last one that is interesting. Why on earth should most people drink strong liqueurs at Christmas, and at no other time in their lives? It’s certainly not enshrined in the scripts – for instance, who could imagine the three wise men bringing a bottle of Bells along rather than exotic gifts (definitely not obtained from Lakeland)? But there’s little doubt that this national oddity happens every year. At one end of the scale, there is the torrent of Baileys and Malibu that always get the mad aunts kicking over the traces at Yuletide. At the other, there are rare, refined and expensive malt whiskies and cognacs that are the province of the connoisseur. In between, there is a selection of tipples varying from the fine and sought after to the downright eccentric. Here are a few to get you in the mood.

DRINKS
White Peak Distillery Gin - £36 – Derbyshire If you like a floral-style gin, this is for you. And it’s distilled locally in the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff.
Shivering Mountain Pink Gin – Hathersage - £40 The bottle is crafted to the shape of Mam Tor. "It brings back memories of walks in the Peak District with traditional juniper balanced beautifully with rich, juicy fruit flavours from bilberries and sloes and a smooth, long finish – a truly great gin…” Or so the blurb says. Strange, we never hit the G&Ts on my school trips to Derbyshire. We opted for a cup of hot chocolate while our socks dried on the radiator.
Frapin Cigar Blend XO Coganc 100% Grande Champagne Premier Cru De Coganc £110 This is more accurately an eau-de-vie than Cognac. Quite what the fruit adds (apart from taking up bottle space) is not explained in the accompanying information. It does however promise “the scent of wooden cigar boxes, typical of a Grande Champagne cognac”.
O’Donnell Sticky Toffee Moonshine £25 Made by passing through slowly melted sugar, this is one for the really sweet tooth.
Deadhead Monkey Chocolate Rum – £66.50 Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this charming little chap on display on their sitting room? The contents are a mixture of six-year cask-aged rum with roasted cacao beans. Just the thing to brighten up your Christmas morning.
Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur £25 A bit like Baileys. Only dearer.
Beluga Celebration Vodka £39.50 Beluga Celebration is a Limited Edition release dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Marinsk Distillery. The water used in its manufacture is apparently solely from 300m deep wells within Siberia. So it must make a difference.
Laphroaig Ian Hunter Chapter 3 – £975 This 33-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is the third in the exclusive series commemorating Ian Hunter. A vintage 1987 distillation, fully matured in refill ex-Bourbon barrels, heralding waves of aniseed, peaty and peppery notes, cedar, kumquat zest and gorse flower.
Blantons Original Bourbon - £70 Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Now it’s yours – for a price.

New lease of life THE PEACOCK STANNINGTON – IT MIGHT BE TIME TO REDISCOVER AN OLD FAVOURITE. itting on the edge of the countryside sits a newlyrefurbished pub with lots to offer. The Peacock Stannington might be a familiar name to many but after closing at the end of 2020, and standing empty for ten months, it has now been given a new lease of life by Jamie Tuxford. Jamie had worked in pubs during his younger years but after completing a degree in accounting and finance he went onto to work as a sales trainer and more latterly as an operation manager for a call centre. The idea of running his own pub remained at the back of his mind though and given time to reflect during the pandemic – he decided to go for it. “I’ve got a couple of friends who live in Stannington and they said ‘why don’t you look at the Peacock’,” Jamie recalls. “I made some enquiries, had a look round and could see its potential. I decided to go for it.” After standing empty for such a long period Jamie had plenty of work to undertake before he was ready to open. A complete refurb, which included new flooring and décor as well as new kitchen equipment, unfolded with the Peacock finally opening its doors on 13 August. It was timed perfectly with Covid restrictions being lifted at that time. “We were unsure whether people would come back after such a long time
S
36 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
but things have been great so far – and it’s getting busier,” says Jamie. Customers have been quick to comment on the stylish décor as well as the impressive drinks selection and reasonably-priced food. Jamie has a team for four chefs, including two recent graduates from Sheffield College, who prepare everything fresh on site. You’ll find plenty of pub classics on the menu as well as Sunday lunches, which are already proving really popular, and there’s a weekday lunch offer of two meals for £10. Tuesdays are Quiz Night and Play Your Cards Right, on Wednesdays you can ‘Build your own Burger’ and on Thursdays ‘Cask Club’ discounts all cask ales by 30p from 4pm. On Friday you can get ready for the weekend with two cocktails for £10 and bottles of prosecco for £15.
Despite only being open a short time, Jamie has already hosted live music in the form of Britain’s Got Talent semifinalists Soldiers of Swing and plans to make this a regular monthly feature. If you’re planning your own celebration, The Peacock Stannington’s large conservatory, usually reserved for diners, can be used as a function room and can seat 40 people comfortably. With Christmas approaching, a festive menu will be launching at the end of November and will run until Christmas Eve and the Peacock will be open for two sittings on Christmas Day, one at 12.30pm and one at 3.30pm. The set menu is priced at £49.95 for adults and £19.95 for children. If you’re yet to rediscover the Peacock Stannington, now might be the time to drop by. Can you tell the difference? PA JEWELLERY TALKS ABOUT THE INCREASING INTEREST IN LAB GROWN DIAMONDS. aboratory grown or synthetic diamonds are a relatively new product to the jewellery market. Diamond has been synthesised for decades, but the quality of material produced was suitable only for industrial uses. It is only in recent years that stones of sufficient quality for jewellery have been produced consistently and economically enough to be brought to the market. Lab grown diamonds are chemically identical to their natural counterparts and have mostly identical properties, including the incredible lustre and brilliance and extreme hardness that natural diamonds are famous for. They don’t look or feel any different to natural diamonds and modern stones of fine quality are virtually impossible to distinguish from natural diamonds without advanced testing equipment. The key to feeling confident about knowing what you are buying is to choose a trusted source; someone who knows diamonds and is happy to talk in detail about they are supplying! For stones larger than around 0.30ct an independent diamond grading report from a reputable laboratory is also a good idea. The principal difference between natural and lab grown diamonds is in the way that they come into being. While
L
natural diamonds occurred under natural forces deep within the earth millions of years ago, lab grown stones are created in factories, combining the required raw materials using machinery that can simulate the extreme temperatures and pressures necessary. New methods and techniques for the manufacture of lab grown diamonds continue to emerge, allowing finer quality stones to be produced more easily and at less expense. In recent years the creation of diamonds suitable for jewellery via chemical vapour deposition (CVD) at lower temperatures and very low pressure has revolutionised production, with much lower costs and beautiful stones. We have recently noticed an increasing interest in lab grown diamonds amongst customers. Although a relatively new
product, they are rapidly becoming more available and are being heavily marketed to price-conscious and ethically aware consumers. In response, we have widened our network of diamond suppliers to enable us to offer lab-grown stones when requested. While researching these products one of the things our jewellers and gemmologists noticed is how much the information available is dominated by the interests of the company supplying the information, weighted towards natural or lab grown diamonds as required. Although traditionally a stockist of natural diamonds we have tried to keep an open mind and balance the ‘pros and cons’ of the two products against each other as we consider the various aspects that may lead you to choose one over the other. Read more about the ecological, ethical and economic considerations associated with lab grown diamonds in our blogs https://www.pajewellery.com/blogs/pajewellery/synthetic-diamonds or look out for future articles in the magazine.

Driving vision safety HERE’S HOW YOU CAN MAKE DRIVING AT NIGHT SAFE FOR YOU AND OTHERS. ow the clocks have gone back, many drivers and commuters find themselves navigating the roads in the dark. According to a study conducted by Green Flag in 2019, nine per cent of drivers admit to having been involved in a road traffic accident in the dark and 44 per cent avoid driving in the dark.Visibility is significantly reduced when driving in the dark without adding poor vision. Along with attending regular eye examinations and monitoring your eye health, choosing the right lenses for driving is also important. When choosing your new pair of glasses, Martyn Kemp’s dispensing opticians will assist you with picking something that is suitable for your needs and lifestyle. Having an anti-reflective coating on your lenses will help to improve your
N
visibility in the dark by reducing glare and reflections from headlights and wet roads. There are a handful of other things you can do to make driving at night safe for you and others: 1. Keep your windscreen clean. A dirty windscreen can cause glare and reduce your visibility. Make sure it is clean inside and out to improve your vision when driving. 2. Ensure your headlights are working and clean. Dirty headlights can reduce the range and brightness of your lights. 3. Bright lights inside the car can hinder your vision. If you can, try and dim your dashboard and reduce the brightness on your satnav screen.
4. Don’t drive if you are tired. Make sure you are well rested and take plenty of break during a long journey.
If you have noticed a change in your vision or would like to talk to a member of the team about updating your glasses, contact Martyn Kemp Opticians, Stocksbridge on 0114 288 2287 or visit www.mko.co.uk.
