SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER?

his month Do You Remember comes with a little twist. Rather than plunging back into the black-and-white world of yesteryear, we are asking out keen-eyed readers to use their local knowledge to solve a little puzzle. No prizes for knowing this is a photo of the Damflask Reservoir wall in Bradfield. It was passed on to us by Barry Couldwell but the puzzle is set by Dennis Baines of Loxley, who says: “There is something missing between the two towers; can any Sixer readers tell what it is?” Readers, over to you… Last month’s photo, also courtesy of Barry Couldwell, showed the Oughtibridge school football team.

PROMOTIONVISION INSIGHT

Vision Insight can help with all your eyecare requirements

You’ll find excellent service, great aftercare and high street prices at Vision Insight. ou may think the best special offers are only available at the biggest high street opticians. But what if you could support a local, independent company and benefit from amazing savings too? Vision Insight in Hillsborough Morrisons offers competitive prices for all of its customers, including both NHS and private patients. Glasses with single-vision standard lenses start at just £40, and there is always a number of special offers available. Optician and owner Asim Javaid explains: “We always find the best offer to suit the customer and never over-sell our products. We don’t try to push people into buying something they don’t need, which means they never pay more than they should.” Having qualified as an optician in 2009, Asim worked as a locum until he opened Vision Insight in August 2014. From the very start, his aim has been to provide an affordable range of glasses alongside an excellent standard of customer service. “One of the great benefits of being a small, local, independent business is that we have become known as really friendly, welcoming opticians,” continues Asim. “We strive to provide personal care and attention for every one of our customers, putting them at ease from the moment they arrive and ensuring they have an enjoyable experience throughout.” This includes the aftercare service, which is second to none. No matter how big or small the issue – whether you need your glasses tightening up, cleaning, re-fitting or sorting out in any other way – the team will be happy to help. With such high quality glasses and contact lenses, however, there are very few issues reported. From the great range of standard frames to a number of designer offerings – including Ralph Lauren, Swarovski, Emporio Armani, Versace, Prada and Jaeger – as well as contact lenses by leading providers – there is plenty to choose from. The friendly staff are always on hand to help you decide, should you need a little help.

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS

You need to take advice if… In life or business, a will is not enough…you need to plan for the future.

• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.

reparing for the future involves much more than just writing a will. A will is just a starting point, and traditional mirror wills that leave everything to your spouse/partner can be very disadvantageous. The right advice could help you protect what you’ve worked hard for, minimise inheritance tax and, for those with business interests, ensure the continued running of your business after your death or during your lifetime if you lose capacity. “I’ll make plans for this when I start feeling iffy” - the problem is you don’t always get advance notice, as accident or illness can strike at any time and impairment of the mind shouldn’t just be associated with illnesses such as Alzheimer’s. A stroke, car accident or other unexpected event can leave any one of us unable to make decisions for ourselves. Without a lasting power of attorney in place, a long, complex, intrusive and expensive court process awaits for your loved ones to gain control of your personal matters, your business affairs and your health and welfare. During this time if you have a business it may not be able to function, and in your personal life your bank accounts, including those jointly owned, may be frozen. The use of the right trust within your will could achieve many things: it could protect a significant portion of your property against the cost of long term care … and for business owners it can enable significant inheritance tax savings. Business property relief is a generous tax relief, but is lost when a business is sold and converted into cash, so planning for this eventuality could make a big difference to the inheritance your children and grandchildren will one day receive. Not everybody has a business of course, but the principles in everyday life remain just the same: planning ahead can make a crucial difference to the value of the estate that you pass to your family and loved ones.

P

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

PROMOTIONCLINICA AESTHETICS

SKIN DEEP Words: Fiona Barber

Rigorous training and years of experience mean that Sue Robinson of Clinica Aesthetics is ideally placed to offer the treatments that will help you look your best.

f you are considering aesthetic treatments but have been scared by horror stories in the press or are worried about confidentiality, Clinica Aesthetics could be exactly what you’re searching for. This new clinic, on Stockarth Lane in Worrall, boasts a secluded, semirural location and is run by Sue Robinson, who has 35-plus years’ experience as a nurse. Sue has always had an interest in aesthetics and after leaving the NHS, she gained a masters-level qualification in independent prescribing at Bradford University. During this time Sue Robinson she gained invaluable experience working in London with her clinical mentor, Dr Aamer Khan of the renowned Harley Street Skin Clinic. This qualification means no third party needs to be involved to prescribe any treatments, and that Sue can offer continuity of care to her clients, with everything being completed to her exacting high standards. Sue’s professionalism is evident in every aspect of her business and work ethic. “I am a member of the BACN (The British Association of Cosmetic Nurses),” she says. “I attend as many

study days and conferences as possible, to make sure I’m always up to date ethically and product-wise.” Throughout her nursing career Sue worked with people from many different walks of life including young adults, when she was a school nurse. This is one reason why Sue believes it’s so important to practice ethically. “My job is to make people look as good as they possibly can for their age. Having worked in schools, I know the pressures that young people feel from the media and you have to make sure someone wants to have a treatment for the right reasons, not just because it is in fashion; I won’t do trout pouts and I am reluctant to treat anyone under the age of 20 – unless it’s a correction, such as facial asymmetry – because even at 18 years old, the structure of the face hasn’t finished developing. “For anyone considering aesthetics, my advice is to seek out a professional nurse or doctor, as we are listed on the registers of our mandatory regulatory bodies, which anyone can check out. It’s vital that you make sure the person treating you is experienced, to ensure your safety.” Two of Sue’s most popular treatments are wrinkle-relaxing

‘My job is to make people look as good as they possibly can for their age. Having worked in schools, I know the pressures that young people feel from the media and you have to make sure someone wants to have a treatment for the right reasons, not just because it is in fashion.’ injections and facial dermal fillers, which are used to plump up lips and smooth out lines and wrinkles. She says: “When clients come to me and want, for example, to reduce the severity of a nose-to-mouth line, I can use filler to restore volume in the cheeks, which then lifts everything up. It’s about looking at the whole face and how to address the cause, not just the symptom.” Medical-grade chemical skin peels are also available and are great for treating hyper pigmentation, sun spots, uneven skin tone and acne scarring. This treatment requires four or five days down time but results in beautiful new skin. Other treatments include medical dermal needling, which is used to treat scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and much more, anywhere on the body. Sue is also trained in HD brows, which can transform the way you look by creating tailored brows to suit your face shape – the effect has even been likened to a mini facelift. In addition to these treatments, Sue stocks Obagi, a prescription-only skincare system that can transform skin in 18-24 weeks. There are four different systems available and Sue analyses your skin before recommending the best range for you and follows up to monitor progress. As well as the clinic on Stockarth Lane, Sue also holds a clinic on a Monday 10am-4pm and Wednesday 5-8pm at Hair Union, next to Dore and Totley train station. Weekends, evening and home visits are available by arrangement.

Frequently qsked questions Who can prescribe and administer wrinkle-relaxing injections? Nurse prescribers, dentist and doctors may legally prescribe and administer the injections. Always ask what qualifications they have and what training courses they have undertaken since their initial training. What is wrinkle reduction used for? It is used to treat frown lines, forehead furrows, eye lines, lip lines, down-turned mouths and dimple chins. It is also used for preventing excessive perspiration in under arms. Will I bruise? This is the most common worry for those receiving a treatment and whenever a needle is used there is always a small risk of bruising. Realistically about one in ten people experience a slight bruise and there are factors that increase this risk, which Sue will explain beforehand and warn if the risks are higher. Sue’s extensive experience in injectable treatments reduces the chance of bruising. How long will the effects of wrinkle-relaxation and dermal fillers last? Everyone responds differently, so the effects vary from person to person. Generally wrinkle relaxation lasts between three to four months, but most clients will have a lingering result for another one to two months. Dermal fillers last from six to up to 18 months depending on the type of filler.

For more information visit www.clinicaaesthetics.com or call Sue on 07771 604604.

Does it hurt? All treatments are carried out with your comfort in mind and most treatments are not painful at all. Most skin peels will feel like a warm sensation during a lovely facial, wrinkle-relaxing injections are tiny and quick, and dermal fillers contain an anaesthetic so they aren’t as painful as they used to be.

Clinica Aesthetics, Hawthorne Barn, Stockarth Lane, Worrall, Sheffield, S35 0JT Hair Union, 289 Abbeydale Road South, Dore, Sheffield, S17 Tel: 07771 604604 Email: sue@clinicaaesthetics.co.uk Weekends, evening and home visits by arrangement

What can and can’t I do after the treatment? Within four hours of the treatment people are advised not to do vigorous exercise, bend over with the head low down, drink excessive alcohol, apply makeup or lie down flat. Do not rub or massage or have facials for 24 hours after your treatment. Otherwise, life can carry on as normal. Is my treatment kept private? Sue offers a confidential service. All of your details are protected and not shared with anyone without prior written consent.

SIXERREMEMBRANCE

Words: Phoebe Seymour

NEVER FORGET Villagers in Bradfield are planning a spectacular act of remembrance to honour the country’s war dead. nyone drawn to the village of Bradfield by a beautiful glow in the night sky next month will be rewarded by an amazing scene. On the evening of Sunday 1 November, St Nicholas’ Church will be illuminated with images of giant poppies to commemorate those who have given their lives fighting for their country. Sue Hague from Pinkdotinc Design is one of the people working to preserve not only the memories of those who died during the first and second world wars, but of those who have fought in any war since, as well as those family members we have lost under other circumstances. Those who have visited the World War One battlefields in France will know what an emotional experience it is, especially if they’ve gone to pay their respects to a relative. But as these soldier’s grandchildren and great grandchildren get older and many graves remain unidentified, their stories and memories are in danger of becoming lost forever. This is why paying our respects to those who have given their lives on Remembrance Day on 11 November is so important. Inspired by last year’s poppy art installation at The Tower of London and driven by a desire to get the local community involved in preserving these memories, Sue is leading a project to create a Poppy Memorial Trail, as well as a poppy illumination at St Nicholas’ Church.

The trail, made up of red plaques with written messages addressed to deceased loved-ones, will surround the church, whilst the poppy illumination will involve projecting giant floating poppies on the side of the church. Sue is also hoping to take photos of all the plaques, so they can be preserved in one book for future generations to read. Pinkdotinc are no stranger to impressive projects of this scale and Sue’s colleague James Bawn has already illuminated Victoria Tower in Huddersfield and the Emley Moor Tv mast to celebrate Tour de France. “I was working with the local World War Heritage Group and one of the problems they had was that many stories about the individuals who fought in the war are lost,” said Sue.“By collating all these plaques, we can make history.” With the help of sponsors Peak District National Park, Travis Perkins, The Print & Copy Shop, The Royal Hotel and Bradfield Brewery and 12 volunteers, Sue and her team have already distributed a whopping 1,000 plaques and are encouraging everyone in S6 and the wider Sheffield community to get involved. The plaques cost a minimum donation of £3 each and are available to buy from St Nicholas’ Church, Low Bradfield Post Office, Loxley Post Office, Stannington Library, The Royal Hotel, the Bradfield Brewery shop, Travis Perkins, Hill & Co accountants, the Help for Heroes Shop in Meadowhall, The British Legion in Stannington, Old Horns, and Plough Inn. All money raised from the plaques will go to Help For Heroes, The Royal British Legion and St Nicholas’ Church. The Royal Hotel in Dungworth has become the biggest hub for the project, with owners Linda and Dave Lambert playing an important role in the project by heading the distribution of the plaques and laying down the path. Sue and her team have also got the children of

Bradfield Dungworth Primary involved. With the help of their teacher Mrs Adams, the children have learnt about Remembrance Day and have written their own messages, from good bye notes to family pets, to letters to deceased family members. Alec Berry, a war veteran and volunteer for the project said: It’s just as important to educate kids about Remembrance Day. The Iraq war wasn’t long ago and many young people have lost parents and family members in more recent wars too.” Children from Bradfield Dungworth School laid their plaques down and the trail was unveiled for the first time at the St Nicholas’ Church Heritage Open Day on 12 September. The event, led by the Reverend Alan Isaacson, involved an outdoor service and was attended by 150 guests including Durham Cathedral Canon Missioner Sophie Jelley and the chair of Bradfield Parish Council, Vicky Priestley. “Interest in the project really has exceeded all expectations. We had a fabulous turnout at the weekend and I have to say a big thank you to the hundreds of school children and members of the public that have already bought plaques for the Poppy Memorial Trail,” said Sue. As Remembrance Day draws closer, more plaques will be added to the path and a string of events will be taking place throughout October to help promote the project and encourage more people to donate to the cause. This month will be packed full of events including a familyfriendly, Local Heritage Day at Bradfield Village Hall on Sunday 11, a Harvest Festival Auction on Sunday 18 and a Bradfield Dungworth School Harvest at St Nicholas’ Church on Tuesday 20 October. From All Saints Day on Sunday 1 to Remembrance Sunday on 8

November, St Nicholas’ will be illuminated with poppies and a different event will take place in Bradfield everyday of the week. On Sunday 1 November the poppy light installation will be switched on and a service will be held at the church at 6pm. This will be followed by an art exhibition at the church on 2 November, a Ploughman’s lunch at Bradfield Village Hall on 3 and 4 November, fireworks around the village for Bonfire night on 5 November, a Proms-style Big Band Night from 7pm on 6 November, an Air Raid Walk setting off from Bradfield Brewery at 4.30pm on 7 November and finally, a memorial service will be held at the church and the poppy lights will be switched off on Sunday 8 November. Organised by Jackie Helliwell from Bradfield Brewery, the Air Raid Walk will involve walkers wearing twinkly lights and carrying lanterns to pay homage to those who hid in the dark during air raids. “During the air raids, the lights had to be turned off, so we want to do the opposite and light ourselves up and make ourselves as visible as possible,” explained Sue.“We will be seen across the valley as a bright, long line leading up to the church which will also be illuminated with poppies.” The Bradfield Brewery team will be organising an array of activities at the brewery before the walk, while The Women's Institute will be serving tea, coffee and cakes and celebrating their 100 year anniversary at the church. With so many events taking place from now until the 8 November and a number of outlets selling memorial plaques, there is no reason not to get involved in some way. However, the organisers understand that not everyone is comfortable publically expressing their grief. “A lot of our guests, both from in and outside of Sheffield have bought plaques,” said Royal Hotel landlord Dave.“But one told me he didn’t want one because he thought it was inappropriate – and that’s fine. You don’t have to write a message. It’s more important that you donate money.” Furthermore, the organisers believe the project is not just about remembering those we’ve lost, but supporting those that are still with us.“The Poppy Trail is for the community to remember people they’ve lost, but it will also have an effect on those still fighting,” said Alec.“It will give them morale and let them know we are still thinking of them.” Alan Isaacson added:“It’s important for children to be aware of how awful war is so we can stop them from happening again. We want to create a peaceful world.” Sue and her team are urging more individuals and schools across Sheffield to get involved by buying their own plaques or by donating money.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS

From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB. aving traded out of 133 Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom.

H

Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t Mr and Mrs Carter, S20 believe in such gimmicks as Fitted April 2015 offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

Marishells Chippy Marishells Chippy is far from an average fish and chip shop. Having been established 100 years ago, it has only ever been owned by three families – the Whithams, followed by the Jones’s, followed by Marie Slingsby, who took over on 1 January 1980. Though Marie once briefly sold the shop to buy a kennel, she missed it so much that she immediately bought it back. She now works alongside her dedicated team to serve the local community with her well-loved, traditional fish and chips. Marie would like to take this opportunity to thank her customers for their support and looks forward to welcoming many more in the years to come. SIXERINTERVIEW

ROSEMARY’S RECIPE FOR HAPPINESS With her cookery school, recipe books and TV appearances celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager tells Stephanie Burns why she revels in her packed schedule.

his summer, Rosemary Shrager has headlined the Great Yorkshire Show for the seventh year running, travelled the country with the Cake and Bake Show (appearing at the Harrogate event in June), and demonstrated at all manner of other food festivals. It’s fair to say that she is very much in demand. What you may not know is that, all the while, she has been running her very own cookery school, which opened in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in May 2013. And it’s this – which keeps her away from the spotlight, teaching both amateurs and professionals how to cook with confidence – rather than any media booking, that she describes as the highlight of her career. “I love teaching the everyday person who wants to learn to cook and, if people embrace it with me, I give them two-fold back,” she says earnestly. “The school means the world to me. All the work I’ve done and all the things I’ve given up, to end up with this, there has been meaning behind it.” It’s from her home in Wadhurst, Kent, that Rosemary is speaking to me. She answers the majority of my questions with an assumed exclamation mark: when did you first get a taste for cooking? “oh my god, when I was a little girl!”, do you come

nothing. But she soon picked herself back up and began making waves in the industry once more. Her most notable professional accomplishments include working for Pierre Koffmann at the three Michelin star La Tainte Claire in London, as well as a stint with Jean-Christophe Novelli. Between 1998 and 2002, she was head chef at Amhuinnsuidhe Castle and ran cookery courses for many a keen student before setting up in Yorkshire, where she led a cookery course at Swinton Park for ten years. She still misses the north. “I loved the Dales and I had a lovely relationship with all the local suppliers. Coming down to Kent was definitely the right move but it couldn’t have just been anywhere – it had to be special for me to make a move away from Yorkshire.” Rosemary first appeared on the small screen in 2000, with a six-part series for Channel 5 called ‘Rosemary – Castle Cook’, and she released her first cook book of the same name the following year. They were to be the first of many and she continues to release new shows and books to this day. But it wasn’t until Ladette to Lady – the 2005 ITV1 show that took wayward girls and transformed them into members of polite society at a 1950s-style finishing school – that she really entered the public consciousness as the firm-but-fair cookery tutor. While the audience laughed along at the girls’ lack of social graces, however, Rosemary was battling a moral dilemma. “I found it quite difficult because we’re all caricatures and we all have faults – but who are we [the tutors] to dictate what

people should do? We’re not really that special. We’re the same as them but we’re a different tribe, that’s all it is. I just wanted people to feel good about themselves.” The show ran for six seasons, including an Australian version, and Rosemary’s caring attitude shone through on screen. Seven years later, in November 2012, her celeb status was cemented when she appeared on jungle-themed reality show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. Finishing sixth out of 12 contestants, she’d won her place in the hearts of the nation and has no hesitation in describing the experience as life-changing. “It was the most amazing experience and I felt really privileged to have been asked to go there. It tested me and told me I was not a bad person and that I could learn to be with people that I didn’t like. I didn’t try to be attention seeking or play a game, I just went in there to be myself. I even didn’t take any herbs, spices or salt in with me!”

3 Place half the pastry on a lightly floured work surface and roll it into a circle about 30cm wide. Transfer it to a lightly buttered baking sheet. Brush the perimeter of the pastry with beaten egg yolk, then pile the chicken mixture in the middle. Roll the remaining pastry into a circle about 36cm wide and place it over the filling, sealing and crimping the edges. Cut a circle about 10cm wide in the top, but leave it in place: this will act as a lid. Brush the whole surface with the remaining egg yolk. Bake in an oven preheated to 180ºC/Gas Mark 4 for about 50 minutes, checking that it’s not browning too much, in which case lower the heat slightly.

Serves 6–8 750g potatoes, thinly sliced 130g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 3 shallots, finely chopped 2 tablespoons tarragon leaves 2 tablespoons chopped chives 4 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into thin strips 800g puff pastry Flour for dusting 2 egg yolks, lightly beaten, for glazing 240ml double cream Sea salt and black pepper 1 Put the potatoes and half the butter into a pan and heat gently, turning from time to time, until they are just tender but not brown. Transfer them to a large bowl and set aside to cool.

While she’d never do Big Brother – not without a very generous fee, anyway – she would embrace almost any other reality TV that came her way. “I wouldn’t do anything physically tough because I’m not shaped for that but, you know me, I’m up for anything!” she laughs. Clearly, despite her packed schedule – she begins filming for a new BBC show this month – Rosemary remains happy, upbeat and thankful for the opportunities that have arisen for her as a celebrity chef. “If you’re passionate about your job, you don’t count the hours,” she says. “And I’m very lucky to be in love with what I do.”

4 When the pie is ready, heat the cream until boiling, then season with salt and pepper. Carefully remove the small pastry lid from the pie and pour in the cream, lifting the mixture gently to allow it to circulate. Put the lid back on and return the pie to the oven for 10 minutes.

SIXEREATING OUT

CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK Phoebe Seymour decides her dad might have had a point after all when it came to his choice of a side dish with his curry… e can all think of embarrassing things our dads did when we were growing up. One which re-occurred over the years for me (and is, in fact, an ongoing family joke), took place when we went to Indian restaurants. After ordering various exotic dishes, my dad would always insist on a side of chips. This is, therefore, a side dish I never even consider when ordering a curry. However, this is something the friendly staff at Taste of India are only too happy to promote. “A lot of customers order half chips, half rice. We cook them fresh and they’re really nice,” offered our waiter Maruf when he took me and my partner’s order. Even a TripAdvisor reviewer called their chips “out of this world” so it can’t be that big a faux pas after all. With its cosy lighting, red-and-gold tablecloths and well-stocked bar, Taste of India has a classy, yet relaxed atmosphere. Nestled in the heart of Hillsborough within easy reach of Penistone Road, this restaurant is perfect for a week-day family meal, or a weekend warm-up before hitting some bars for a night out. This local gem has been established for more than 20 years and many members of the team have gone on to set up their own restaurants around Sheffield, including the equally successful Rubeez at Gleadless Town End. In the last few decades, curries such as the korma and tikka massala have firmly established themselves as British favourites and become as popular as, well, chips. It should be no surprise then, that my partner ordered a chicken korma. Wanting to try something a little different, I asked for the chicken tikka

With its shop full of essentials, awardwinning cafe, and holiday cottage round the back, the post office really is the hub of village life in Flask End lask End and Bradfield Post Office has been at the heart of Low Bradfield and the surrounding areas from many years. Over time, it has evolved to include a village shop, post office and cafe, and now, after a recent refurbishment, it boasts a new open plan layout and extended opening hours. Heather Tingle, who took over the shop three and a half years ago, says she wanted to develop the site to open it up to as many customers as possible. “We extended the café area, created a group area – which is great for dog walkers – extended the tea garden and installed four cycle racks too.” The award-winning café is half way round Damflask Reservoir, making it an ideal stop-off point for any walkers or cyclists looking to refuel. It offers a range of delicious homemade cakes, brownies and tarts, along with savoury options such as made-to-order sandwiches and pasties, which are freshly delivered each day. A variety of teas is available and they also sell Cafeology coffee, which is a local Sheffield company. “We are really focused on supporting local businesses and a lot of the produce we sell here comes from within a ten-mile radius,” Heather says. Children are well catered for too, with soft drinks, including fruit juices and milkshakes, and the hot chocolate is poplar with both children and adults. The shop is full of everyday essentials including milk from just up the road at Our Cow Molly and there is a range of specialty products such as honey and preserve gift sets. Tipple Tails cakes are as popular as ever, and the shop is also a great place to pick up gifts like MJT mugs or artwork and

SIXERCOBBLERS AND KEYS

Years of experience make Cobblers and Keys the obvious choice. hoes and keys have been an essential part of our everyday lives for thousands of years, so much so, that we take them for granted. That is, until we lose our keys or our favourite heels wear down. It’s not surprising then, that there has been a cobblers based in the same location at 145 West Street in the bustling centre of Sheffield for nearly 100 years. The shop has been a Cobblers & Keys since 2006, and is now undergoing a brand new refit to become even better equipped to provide a quality shoe repair and key cutting service. Cobblers & Keys was originally established by Nick and Dawn Clark in Grimsby in 2001. The business proved so successful, that a second branch opened in Scunthorpe within the same year. Their professional, expert service continued to grow and a further two branches opened in Sheffield; one on West Street and the other in Hillsborough in the Morrison’s foyer in 2002. With a combined experience of over 50 years, Nick and Dawn not only owe their success to their breadth of hands-on shoe repair and key cutting knowledge, but to their years of dedicated customer service. Howard has been the West Street branch manager for ten years and, with the help of his assistant Ann, provides shoe repairs including re-heeling, patching and stitching, as well as handbag repairs such as broken zips. They also sell a collection of gent’s shoes and boots made by Loakes the shoemakers of Northampton. So not only can they repair your favourite shoes, they can also provide a quality pair of English handmade shoes as well. To

complement this service, Cobblers & Keys also stock Cherry Blossom premium shoe care and Vibram shoe repair products to help restore and revitalise your trusty old shoes. When it comes to completing a job to the highest standard, Cobbler & Keys believe that the quality of the materials they use is just as important as the cobbler’s level of skill. This is why they use only the very best leather from the UK’s biggest traditional leather tannery, Thomas Ware & Sons Ltd. Engraving is offered on a vast range of giftware ranging from wedding gifts, to trophies and silverware, to Zippo lighters and tankards. They also repair watches and have an in-depth knowledge of most of today’s popular models. And there’s no need to book yourself into a garage for a new car key. Their Morrison’s branch can even provide an electronic car key fob and precision key cutting service for many car makes including Vauxhall, Ford, Audi, Citroën, Nissan, Kia and many more. Simply leave your car details with the team or take advantage of their while-you-wait service. So if your shoes are looking past their best or you need a spare key cutting, visit the newly refurbished Cobblers & Keys on West Street or drop in to your local branch in Hillsborough. With 10 per cent off any service until 31 December, there’s never been a better time to engrave that special gift or fix those heels in time for that Christmas party. Just bring your voucher to your nearest Cobbler & Keys store. PROMOTIONBEN NETTLETON

Ben Nettleton’s plumbing business is built on solid foundations of reliability, great service and fair prices. oung entrepreneurial spirit is something we should always admire. This is especially true for those entering a trade, because you are up against others who have dedicated their whole lives to perfecting their craft. When it comes to choosing a plumber, however, experience may be one thing to consider, but reliability and quality of service are two elements that are far more important. You might only rarely need a plumber, but when you do, it is most likely in an emergency, so you need someone who will act fast and provide the best service possible at a fair price. That’s exactly what Worrall plumber Ben Nettleton offers the people of South Yorkshire. When Ben left school, he started to train as an engineer but found that he preferred a much more hands-on approach to learning. He developed an interest in plumbing after helping his father, a landlord, with jobs in his properties. It was this that spurred him on to train at Sheffield College as a plumber. Ben completed an apprenticeship, training with other plumbing professionals and gaining invaluable experience. Now, with the right qualifications, knowledge and experience behind him, Ben has started his own company, Nettleton Plumbing, providing a professional, personal service. He said: “The benefit of being your own boss is that you don’t have to rely on anyone else. I can make sure that each job is completed to the highest standard.” Ben covers all aspect of plumbing including bathroom fittings, repairs and call-outs, and is currently training to become Gas Safe Registered – he is working with Stuart

Charlesworth, who is a Gas Safe Registered, to gain experience in gas safety. When it comes to fitting bathrooms, Ben has three reliable suppliers he uses for products – Easy Bathroom, James Hargreaves and Screw Fix. He even makes sure any price discounts he receives are passed on to his customers. “I enjoy fitting bathrooms because it can completely transform a room and make something more convenient for a homeowner,” said Ben. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a satisfied customer.” As well as plumbing, Ben has become something of a handyman so if you need any light fittings or doors handles changing, he is your go-to guy. He said: “If I can’t do something, I will learn how to, or can recommend another reliable tradesperson who I know will be able to help.” This impressive work ethic means Ben goes above and beyond to make sure his customers are happy with his work and this is one reason why he gains many of his clients through personal recommendation. A NEW YOU IN 2015 With the award winning non surgical cosmetic treatment G&M Healthcare are the first to offer the award winning Exilis in Sheffield. Exilis Elite delivers lasting and measurable results in this breakthrough non-surgical aesthetic system. Welcome to the future of body shaping, skin tightening and wrinkle reduction! Exilis treatment offers cosmetic improvement without surgery. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH EXILIS? Virtually any area can be treated thanks to the precisely engineered applicator. Real time skin temperature monitoring means the ability to deliver maximum power to a desired depth without discomfort.

Prices start from

£65.00

HOW DOES EXILIS WORK? per session During the session, the Exilis computercontrolled device is guided over the treatment area. You feel a warming sensation as the energy is delivered to the deeper layers of skin. Exilis focuses the energy on the specific treatment areas at the targeted depth of penetration. By causing the collagen supporting tissues to remodel, Exilis stimulates and strengthens the collagen network to improve skin laxity and texture. Exilis is recommended for any patient between the ages of 20 and 70+ who desires cosmetic improvement. THE PROCEDURE We recommend four to six sessions at a rate of one every week. You can have additional treatments every 6 months. Results last up to 12-18 months after the Exilis treatment.

SIXERSPORT

GET A MOVE ON!

This Girl Can campaign encouraging more women to take up exercise. his Girl Can is a national campaign developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations. It’s a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their faces get. This Girl Can is a nationwide campaign to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability. Sport England research reveals a huge difference in the number of men and women playing sport. And it's not because females don't want to get active. A huge number of women and girls are afraid to exercise because of fear of judgement. Check out their insight pack, Go Where Women Are, which includes up-to-date research exploring the relevant motivations, barriers and triggers to getting more women more active. Sport England responded by creating the groundbreaking This Girl Can campaign. It is the first campaign of its kind to feature women who sweat and jiggle as they exercise. It seeks to tell the real story of women who play sport by using images that are the complete opposite of the idealised and stylised images of women we are now used to seeing. Their campaign has clearly captured a nerve: 13 million people have now viewed the flagship This Girl Can film online. The campaign doesn’t hold back in trying to encourage women to beat their barriers. ‘Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox’ and ‘I kick balls, deal with it’ are among the hard-hitting lines used in the campaign to prompt a change in attitudes and help boost

women’s confidence. It comes as research, carried out by Sport England, reveals that by every measure, fewer women than men play sport regularly – two million fewer 14-40 year olds in total. Despite this, 75per cent say they want to be more active. In some other European countries, this disparity doesn’t exist. Further research into what's stopping women turning their ambitions into reality found that a fear of judgement – on appearance, ability or how they chose to spend time on themselves – puts women of all ages off exercising. The findings were the driving force behind the campaign’s creation, which aims to empower women and encourage more to get active. For more about This Girl Can, go to www.thisgirlcan.co.uk where you can find out about the women in the campaign, get tips on how to get active and join the national debate. You can also use the hashtag #thisgirlcan to join the conversation on Twitter.

SIXERTETSUDO

Learn to make mind and body work as one using the secrets of Tibet’s Art Form. he holistic martial art of Tetsudo, or the Art Form as it is known, has its roots in Tibet and its essence lies in the cornerstone that mind and body are inextricably linked. As changes in one cause changes in the other, it is only when both are working harmoniously together that anything can be done efficiently and effectively. Training in this unique Art Form consists of making the body physically fit, strong, agile and healthy and training the mind to become more aware, perceptive and focused. The creator of the Tetsudo concept was Maha Ustad (supreme teacher) Masu Tetsura. After his death in 1966, his sole student Guru Ustad (venerable teacher) B.S. Dhaliwal formulated the syllabus that is practised today. Third degree black belt Arun, the son of Guru Ustad B.S. Dhaliwal, runs classes in Sheffield along with his older brother Dev. Sessions begin with a collective bow; an opportunity for students and teachers to focus their minds and leave behind the stresses of their everyday lives. They then perform a fascinating series of techniques, sparring (or freestyle as it is termed), stick work and a kedh – a range of techniques that are performed together in a set pattern. The Art Form is not about achieving grades, it’s about the journey and improving self confidence by understanding our

T

body, learning how to control it, keeping calm, being positive and reducing stress in our everyday life. Tetsudo can offer profound benefits to everyone, regardless of age, gender or fitness level. To find out more, visit www.tetsudo.co.uk or www.sheffieldtetsudo.co.uk. You can also call Arun on 07910 451378 or email him at arundhaliwal2001@yahoo.co.uk to enquire about either visiting the class to have look for yourself or indeed joining in a training lesson. Walkley classes take place every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Wisewood Wanderers’ walking footballers win tournament Wisewood Wanderers beat Grimsby Mariners in a thrilling penalty shoot-out to become champions of the Grimsby Ancient Mariners Seven-a-side Walking Football Festival. The skillful seniors (aged between 55 and 75), who train at Wisewood Sports Centre, won the 12-team tournament, held at the Bradley Football Development Centre in Grimsby in September. The well-drilled Wanderers didn’t concede a goal in normal play and showed nerves of steel to triumph in two penalty shoot-outs, one in the final and against Cleethorpes Harriers in the semis. The team’s most experienced player Kevin Brennan, 75, said: “It felt like I was 25 again playing for the YMCA. I never thought back then I would be putting my boots on in my 70s. What a victory!” Team manager Luke Horton, 24, a fitness instructor at Wisewood Sports Centre, said: “It was an unbelievable day. The lads showed spirit and determination. They are a great example to all over 50s of how to keep active, fit and competitive.” Walking Football takes place at Wisewood Sports Centre every

Charity auction in aid of Stannington Methodist Church The Peacock Inn on Stannington Road will hold a charity auction to raise money for Stannington Methodist Church at Knowle Top on Friday 23 October at 7pm. Amongst the many exciting lots, guests will be able to bid for a paint-balling and laser tagging package worth £130 and an intermediate car service from Smithy Garage at Low Bradfield worth £90, as well as a number of paintings, vouchers and meals at local restaurants. Bradfield Brewery will also be helping out by serving a range of ales. All money made from the auction will go to the Friends of Knowle Top fund for church repairs. The organisers will also be holding two ploughman's lunches (a two course lunch with tea/coffee for £5) in Bradfield Village Hall from 12pm until 2pm on Tuesday 3 November and Wednesday 4 November in aid of St. Nicholas' Church, followed by a coffee/tea morning with a book and bric-a-brac sale on Saturday 14 November, a performance by The Rivelin Brass Band and the Stannington Handbell Ringers on Friday 20 November, and a reindeer festival, at which locals will be able to meet two real reindeer, on Sunday 29 November. For more information about the auction or any other Stannington charity events, call Sue Allott on 0114 234 0200 or email suegeorgeallott@gmail.com.

Dungworth Methodist Church Coffee Morning The Dungworth Methodist Church’s monthly coffee morning will be returning with two events taking place on Saturday 10 October from 10am until 12pm. The World War One Project will be there to talk about their latest research and their Poppy Trail project, whilst writer Frank Wilson will be visiting all the way from Canada to launch his brand new book, Nowt To Do With My Wife. Frank will be selling his book for £10 each, £2 of which will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. If you have any family stories, photographs or artefacts relating to the First World War, the project will be pleased to hear from you. The coffee morning will also include cakes and a bring-and-buy sale. The Dungworth Methodist Church holds services every Sunday at 3pm. Led by various ministers and local preachers, these services are friendly and enjoyable. Many churches in the area have closed over the years and as this is the only church in Dungworth Village, the congregation feel the closure of Dungworth Methodist Church would be a great loss to the community. If you have any suggestions on how the church could increase its attendance, please send your ideas to Dungworth Methodist Church, Main Road, Dungworth, Sheffield, S6 6HF or email sheila0000@btinternet.com.

SIXERHALLOWE’EN

SCARE TACTICS It’s the time of year when ghosts and ghouls set the shop tills ringing. Kate Preston-Hargraves reports. uch like the English language and One Direction, Hallowe’en is one of those things that originated in Britain but has been claimed by the Americans as their own. The name Hallowe’en originally came from the name All Hallows Eve because November 1st was to be the Holy Saints’ Day. However, the traditions of Hallowe’en began in the festival of Samhain, which was part of the ancient Celtic religion of Britain and other parts of Europe. At the end of summer, the Celts thought the barrier between our world and the world of ghosts and spirits was really thin. They thought that strange creatures with even stranger abilities could wander free. The Celts’ solution was to hold a big gathering to scare away these creatures from the other side. The modern tradition of Hallowe’en was barely acknowledged in the UK until recently, but our American cousins really embraced it. What we now know as Hallowe’en was believed to have started among Irish immigrants in the United States during the 19th century, but it was during the 20th centry that it became popular with the nation as a whole with traditions like trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving. Although the UK lags behind America when it comes to Hallowe’en, we are certainly catching up. Retail spending in the UK on Hallowe’en was an astounding £330 million in 2014 compared with only £12 million in 2001. The reason for this seems to lie with widespread marketing efforts by retailers and the continuous bombardment of American films and television series like The Walking Dead and even, to an extent

M

80 SIXER MAGAZINE

Twilight, which depict vampires of a less scary nature than we have been used to in the past. Britain’s large community of Americans has also helped popularize the holiday. However, even as it gets bigger in the UK, there is still one very important difference between the British and the American ways of celebrating. Americans seem to have lost the initial idea of scaring the creatures of the night away with even scarier costumes. Hallowe’en is used as an opportunity to simply dress up, be it as SpongeBob, Captain America or even a bunny rabbit. Meanwhile, their British counterparts stock up on fake blood, buy funky contact lenses that turn their eyes unnatural looking colours and rip up their old clothes in an attempt to look, I suppose, like a ghoul who has just been mugged. There is, however, still one very important similarity between the American way of celebrating and the British. And that is the fact that, at the end of the night when the smaller ghosts and spirits are tucked up in bed and the older ones are stumbling home, incapable of saying ‘Boo’ to a goose, it is clear to see that the spirit of Hallowe’en is undead and well.

‘Retail spending in the UK on Hallowe’en was an astounding £330 million in 2014 compared with only £12 million in 2001.’

SIXERI DID IT MY WAY

I Did It My Way’s winning blend of bespoke funerals and excellent service pays off. fter three good years on Holme Lane, I Did It My Way will move to larger premises on 12 October due to increasing demand and an expanding team of staff. The new office – which is near to the new Sainsbury’s on Halifax Road, at the back of Carphone Warehouse – has ample car parking for visiting clients. After the move, they will also be updating the website with new options. They aim to provide a funeral that is tailored to your exact requirements at a fraction of the price you’d pay elsewhere, with a service that’s second to none. Thanks to their excellent standards of service, the business has really taken off and they did over 130 funerals in their second year. The colourful funeral, which includes a coffin of any design, is now £2,800 (cremation only), including all fees and a limousine for the family. These funerals are greatly received, beautiful and certainly remembered. Having recently signed up to Quaker Social Action’s Fair Funeral Pledge – in which funeral directors are required to provide clear, comparable prices so people know what exactly they’re paying for – I Did It My Way are dedicated to helping people find a funeral they can afford. A funeral can be conducted with dignity and respect without having to spend a fortune and they pride themselves on being transparent. They offer a tailored funeral to every family, including a

straight-to-crematorium service (which can be attended by close family members) for £1,560. As with all of their funerals, this is at the family’s convenience, not theirs, and they always act in their clients’ best interests. They know that sometimes a simple approach can be very fitting as not everyone wants a big send-off. This modern approach reflects their belief that funerals don’t necessarily need to be sad occasions; they can be happy celebrations of a person’s life, too. The Saturday morning service is available at a cost of only £70 on top of the normal prices; ideal for families struggling to get work commitments altered on a week day. As with every aspect of the business, they are happy to help in any way they can. Their commitment to helping local families has led to a wall adorned with cards and thank you messages, and the Facebook page has received some lovely reviews. SIXEREDUCATION

TOP OF THE CLASS Your children deserve the best possible start in life and these educational establishments can set them on the road to success. Forge Valley School

“Summer school is filled with fun, laughter and great banter.”

During the last week of the summer holidays, over half of Forge Valley School’s new Year 7 pupils attended a summer school. The pupils completed a range of different activities throughout the week, ranging from literacy and numeracy lessons to rock climbing and cooking. This was the biggest summer school yet and it was a huge success. Not only did the week provide some vital bridging work in numeracy and English, but it also helped the pupils to make friends and calm nerves before starting at Forge Valley School. Pupils commented: “I have enjoyed summer school. My support lesson was good and I have made new friends.” “Food technology was my favourite. I would like to do it for my options. I also liked literacy. This week was really fun!” “When I first came I only knew one person in my group, but now I have a group of friends.”

Corner House Nursery Corner House Nursery has been a family-run business for 21 years and believes in providing children with the best start in life by giving them lots of exciting and challenging play experiences. They proudly achieved ‘Outstanding’ in their July 2014 OFSTED inspection. With such a high standard of care, it is little wonder so many families choose the nursery to provide a nurturing environment for their little ones. The Victorian building is set in a third of an acre of land and offers four outdoor play areas, including an adventure playground and a nature garden. They also have three onsite cooks who provide healthy, home-cooked meals.

Sheffield High School Sheffield High School provides high-quality education exclusively for girls aged four to 18. In its latest inspection, the school was graded ‘Excellent’ in all areas and the Junior School was rated ‘Outstanding’ for its Early Years Foundation Stage.

Forge Valley School also opens every evening and weekend to sports clubs and individuals. On the back of Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign, which encourages and empowers females of all ages to take part in more sport and physical activity, they now host sessions for pilates, yoga, badminton, boot camps, dance fit and many more. They have also worked with the Arches School Sport Partnership, and pupils at the school, to research what activities younger participants may be interested in doing. As a result, new sessions have been developed in trampolining, dance clubs and Affinity Air Cheer, and teen gym evenings have been extended. Opportunities in a variety of other sports will also become available to locals soon. Wood Lane, Sheffield S6 5HG Tel: 0114 234 8805 www.forgevalleysheffield.org

This year, 50 per cent of their A-level results were graded A*or A, while over 73 per cent were graded A* to B. Combined with excellent GCSE grades, these results were the best of any school in the area. SIXERQ&A

TAKING THE LEAD Greg Wood, 29, has played for Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs Ice Hockey Club for five seasons and recently became their coach. He talks to Fiona Barber about how it all began and the highlights of his career so far. What made you get into ice hockey? Traditionally I always played football, but when they built Sheffield Arena in 1991, free tickets were given out to watch Sheffield Steelers play. Once I had watched one game, I was hooked, so I decided to take it up myself and started playing at around eightyears old. What was the moment you decided you would make a career out of the sport? From the age of 13 I knew I had a good ability, and it was pretty much all I ever wanted to do. I signed professionally for the first time with the Basingstoke Bison at 17 after being scouted. It was a great opportunity and I took it with both hands.

What’s your proudest moment? Representing the national team. I think for anyone who plays any kind of sport, representing your country is an honour. I played for England under 14s, and then for Great Britain from then on to senior level.

How did you react when you were asked to become coach for the Steeldogs? I felt really proud. I’ve grown up with most of the players and have come up through the junior ranks. We had a rough year last year – we finished eighth out of ten – but with the team we’ve got now, I think we can do much better – I’d like to finish top five. It’s going to be a tough year, but I genuinely believe we can reach that.

Why did you decide to make the move into teaching? Ice hockey players can have a very short career span, so you have to think about what you’re going to do afterwards. I got to 24 and wanted to set myself up for when I dropped down a level, so I became a teacher and have been at Sandhill Primary School in Barnsley for just over two years. Coaching and teaching – specifically teaching PE – is something I really enjoy, especially working with kids and developing them from a sporting standpoint. The most important thing is that it’s fun.

How do you balance coaching, playing, work and life? We train in the evenings and play at weekends, but I try very hard to strike a balance between teaching, playing and down time. I still enjoy playing though, and would only stop if it wasn’t fun anymore.

“My style is more about possession and encouraging the players to really express themselves on the ice, which will hopefully create more goal scoring chances and be really entertaining for our supporters.”

What has changed at Steeldogs since you became coach? We’ve kept the core guys but have brought in two new imports and three British players including a goalie. My coaching style is different to the previous coach. He was all about rough and ready and trying to intimidate teams, whereas my style is more about possession and encouraging the players to really express themselves on the ice, which will hopefully create more goal scoring chances and be really entertaining for our supporters. Are there any Picture: © Jane Williams development plans for the club? We are really big on bringing up and developing our own players; 90 per cent of our team are from Sheffield, which is a really rare thing. A few of our British players are coming to the end of their careers and we will need to fill those spaces. But there are some really talented players coming through, and my job is to progress them and get them working with our team as soon as possible.

Bradfield Brewery’s John Gill

Showing their support Bradfield Brewery are Sheffield Steeldogs’ title sponsors for another year and the brewery’s owner, John Gill, says they are delighted to support the team. “We have followed ice hockey for over 20 years. We first got involved when our kids were a lot younger. Although it’s got a name for fighting, all of the aggression is on the ice – not in the fans – and it’s entertaining from start to finish; it’s very much a family sport. We have followed the Steeldogs for a long time and have sponsored them for four seasons. We also still sponsor the Steelers, although not as their title sponsors, but we’re involved at both levels. Everyone is excited to see what Greg can bring this year. He’s a Sheffield lad who has come up through the ranks and has played at the top level. He’s really passionate about coaching and playing.”
