Transform your bathroom AFTER SEEING THEM IN SIXER, JOE AND JACKIE PROTHERO KNEW EXACTLY WHO TO TURN TO FOR AN UPGRADE. hen Joe Prothero and his wife Jackie needed a new bathroom they wanted to use a local tradesman, so turned to Eric Law and his team at Visual Bathrooms, Holme Lane, to complete the job. “We’ve been living here since 2007 and in 2008 we bought the house. We always try and use local tradesmen, and saw Visual Bathrooms in Sixer magazine; they’re on Holme Lane just round the corner from us. It was fantastic; my wife was the driver behind it, she went to see Eric and he came to see us and listened to ideas then gave suggestions to how it would work. Eric has a really nice showroom, with plenty of different bathrooms to look at. Eric produced two computer generated mock-ups for the design, we wanted a whole revamp of the room including new tiling and flooring. Eric gave us suggestions for appliances and suggested ideas we hadn’t thought off, it was a real team effort. Our initial idea is not what we got, our finished bathroom is a lot better than what we first wanted. The bathroom definitely needed a revamp. We went from one light to five spotlights, a new shower and bath,

two new cupboards, a toilet and sink. We even needed to build a new wall to attach the shower to. Eric and his team were really easy to work with, he was very welcoming and treated us like friends, not customers. They were upfront about costs and we knew what was happening at every stage of the process, we really trusted the company. When it came to fitting the bathroom we were told it would take a maximum of two weeks, and the fitters that came were friendly, efficient and clean, we moved into my mother-in-law’s house for the duration of the fitting and were happy to leave them on their own in the house to get on with the job. Even when we changed our minds, and decided we wanted a mirror that lights up instead of a normal mirror, that was not a problem, and the mirror we wanted was fitted in days. I would absolutely recommend Eric and Visual Bathrooms, we are over the moon with our new bathroom. Our house is 120 years old, improvements need making all the time, but we don’t foresee having to make any changes to the bathroom for the rest of the time we are living here, we’re both really happy with the work Visual Bathrooms have done.” To discover how Visual Bathrooms can transform your bathroom, contact Eric on 0114 233 3032 or pop into the showroom on Holme Lane.

DO YOU REMEMBER?
Last month:
Do you remember? ll aboard for a journey down memory lane back to the golden age of steam trains, and a time where every small village had its own railway station. This month’s teaser comes courtesy of Barry Couldwell... it looks like we have a full turn-out of immaculately dressed staff on hand, all we need is a train and some passengers. Last month’s image was, of course, Sheffield’s Man With The Pram, John Burkhill BEM. John has dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to raising money for charity – and he has no intention of stopping until he’s raised £1million for Macmillan Cancer Support. This particular picture was taken in September 1977 at the start of a 387-mile walk from Land’s End to Sheffield. Turn to page 87 for the full story and details of the
new book about John, published by RMC Media. Write and send your photos to: Do You Remember?, Sixer, RMC Media, 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Business Park, Sheffield, S8 0XF Alternatively, you can email your answer to sixer@rmcmedia.co.uk.

“YOUR DIGITAL FUTURE IS SAFE IN OUR HANDS”
PLANS FOR A CARE FEES CAP “ABANDONED”… Here are five things you need to know about care fees funding. April 2016 should have seen the most significant changes in a generation to the law relating to the provision of social care, with the introduction of the second part of the Care Act 2014*. Here’s five things you need to know: 1) The Personal Expense Allowance – when an individual requires care and is means tested, the first thing to be taken to fund their care is their income. All an individual’s means testable income will be taken to fund their care, with just £24.40 per week (the Personal Expense Allowance) being left untouched… 2) The means test – this will be conducted by the relevant Local Authority when an individual needs to access care. The means test is an assessment of an individual’s assets (income, property, savings etc) to ascertain whether they should be funding their care themselves. The means test thresholds for capital assets were due to change in April 2016 but have now been “delayed” until 2020 so remain as follows: i)
Assets less than £14,250 = your care will be funded in full by your Local Authority ii) Assets more than £23,250 = you will have to cover the cost of your care in full iii) Assets between £14,250 and £23,250 = you will have to make a contribution towards the cost of your care, which could be a very significant sum 3) The “funding cap” was also due to be introduced in April 2016. It was intended to limit the amount an individual will be required to pay towards their care at £72,000, but again that has been delayed to 2020 so there is currently still no cap in place. 4) Deferred Payment Agreements don’t mean you no longer have to sell your home to fund your care. Initial statements by Government ministers suggested there would be no need for anyone to sell their home to fund their care. However, the legislation actually introduces a nationwide scheme, called Deferred Payment Agreements, which could mean your home doesn’t need to be sold during your lifetime, but still could be sold after your death. Clearly there is a big difference.
You need to take advice if… • You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will. • You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner. • You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up. • You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan. • You are divorced or widowed. • You have children. • You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.
5) Plan ahead – perhaps of most significance, you can opt to plan ahead and protect what you’ve worked hard for. Using a Trust, created under the terms of your Will or during your lifetime, can help protect your home and savings for future generations. However, for this planning to be effective, it must be done at a time when you are fit and healthy. Using the right Trust for your personal circumstances and objectives is vital, so taking advice from a specialist is an important first step. You can take the first step by calling Collective Legal Solutions on 0114 288 1104 and requesting more information. *applies in England only, with Wales yet to introduce new legislation

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL’S NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE hope everyone had a wonderful summer break and autumn is off to a great start. On behalf of the Parish Council I would like to start by welcoming our two new horticultural apprentices, Joanne Deakin and Jack Powell, who joined us on 1 August. They will both be a great addition to our team and we wish them the best of luck in their new roles – see our article further on for an insight into our what they will be getting up to. Unfortunately, due to personal reasons, the Parish Council have to say goodbye to Councillor Kevin Rontree, who has resigned from his position after serving on the Parish Council since June 2015. May I thank Kevin for the good work and valuable experience he brought to the Parish Council and wish him all the very best for the future. The vacancy in the Oughtibridge Ward was advertised, and, as no poll was called for, the Council will be co-opting an individual to the post. Anyone interested in being considered for co-option should contact the office by 24 October 2016. Earlier in September I attended the opening of the War Memorial in Storrs Wood, where Andrew Vickers had made a stunning sculpture, followed by the opening of Andrew’s new gallery on Storrs Lane. I also attended a very well organised
I
heritage event at Knowle Top Chapel, Stannington. September also saw the annual Well Blessing event at Midhopestones – more on these events can be seen in separate articles. On the following pages you will note information regarding public consultation on Sheffield City Council’s proposals for flood protection covering our area. This is an important issue given the continuing changes to our climate and I urge everyone to view the proposals and give any feedback to Sheffield City Council – local knowledge is vital in the planning of such work. I look forward to the coming months, in particular Christmas when once again I will be hosting a Christmas card competition with local school children and a Christmas tea party for the finalists with the winner having the honour of switching on the Christmas lights for the Parish. Cllr Vickie Priestley
Knowle Top Chapel Well Blessing Midhopestones
Well Blessing Midhopestones Sunday 18 September 2016 Over 50 people enjoyed the warm autumn sunshine as they gathered for the annual blessing of the wells in the village of Midhope recently. During a short service of thanksgiving in the atmospheric St James’ Church, the congregation were reminded of the importance of water in both the physical and spiritual sense. Accompanied by the Loxley silver band, those attending gathered firstly around the St James’ Well and then on to Potter’s Well. At both locations prayers of thanksgiving were given by Revd David Hopkin, Penistone & Thurlstone Team Ministry and The Ven Steve Wilcockson, Archdeacon of Doncaster. Appropriate passages from scripture were read by Councillors Peter Butler and Keven Habeshaw.
This chapel, built in 1877, has been at the heart of the Stannington community for over 130 years. 2004 saw a huge renovation and redevelopment Knowle Top Cllrs. Peter and Mavis project undertaken to Butler and Cllr Stephen Bennett develop the chapel for worship and use as a community facility. Today the chapel and hall are used extensively by various groups in the area and ‘The Friends of Knowle Top’ put on various community and fund raising activities throughout the year; 9, 10 and 11 September saw a full three days of exhibitions, demonstrations and activities around Knowle Top. Chairman Cllr Vickie Priestley introduced Parish Archivist Malcolm Nunn who gave a talk on the listed and heritage buildings in the area. Demonstrations were given throughout the weekend with children’s events, making of heritage hats, wood turning and jam making culminating on Sunday with Stannington Handbell Ringers and the drawing of the raffle. Cllrs Mavis & Peter Butler and Stephen Bennett joined in an impromptu session with the Handbell Ringers. Fortunately each were given a number and only rang their bells when their numbers were called! After a very successful three days the raffle was drawn with prizes being generously donated by local businesses. ‘Friends of Knowle Top’ were planning their next acgtivities even whilst packing away the stands and boxing up the goods.
FLOOD PROTECTION
The flood of 2007 impacted the whole city
he scale of the flood risks facing communities across Sheffield is very significant. But major floods occur relatively rarely. It may be many years before the next flood happens, but if we are not prepared when it does happen then the consequences have potential to be devastating for people, the economy and the environment. So we need to consider actions now to safeguard our own and future generations. Sheffield City Council is considering options to reduce flood risk in the Upper Down and River Sheaf catchments. Flooding from these rivers poses a significant risk to people and property. Scientific evidence suggests that this risk will increase in the future due to climate change. The Council is seeking to provide flood protection so that the chance of a flood occurring is no more than one in 200 in any given year. The Upper Don Flood Alleviation Scheme covers a catchment area of 274km square, located in North West Sheffield. The area lies at the foot of the Pennine hills from the outlying districts of Stocksbridge and Oughtibridge passing through urbanised districts such as Hillsborough to Sheffield city centre. There are lots of different ways to reduce flooding. Each has different benefits and impacts so the Council want to hear your views on what you think is best for Sheffield. They are consulting now to ensure that you have a say on any option that is taken forward for more detailed assessment. In order to develop suitable solutions, the Council have used computer models and reviewed evidence from past flood events to understand the causes of flooding in Sheffield. The main causes of flooding within the Upper Don and Sheaf Catchments include:
T
Too much water too fast Sheffield’s location at the foot of the Pennines means rivers respond quickly to storm rainfall. Flooding can be deep, fastflowing, and occur with little warning.
Pinch points Bridges, culverts (large underground pipes), weirs and narrow sections of river can constrict flow and can be prone to blockage from debris. This can raise water levels behind the blockage causing water to overflow and was a particular problem in the 2007 floods. Overflows at low points Storms raise water levels in the river channel, causing water to spill at low points along the river banks or eventually to overtop existing riverside walls. Overland flow Once water escapes, it can sometimes travel over land before returning to the channel downstream, potentially flooding properties or disrupting road or rail networks that are not immediately beside the river. This happened in several locations in Sheffield in 2007. The options for flood protection that the Council have considered fall into three main categories: • Slowing the flow • Containing the flow, and • Resilience Wherever possible the Council have tried to include options that have the potential to provide wider benefits such as supporting economic growth, providing recreational opportunities, protecting Sheffield’s heritage or improving the environment for wildlife. Creating temporary storage areas to hold back flood water will reduce the height of new flood defences required though the city. Two locations at Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and Beeley Wood, and three locations upstream of Malin Bridge are being considered for providing temporary flood storage. New embankments would be constructed alongside the River Don and across the River Loxely that would hold back water for a short period during significant storm events.
Wharncliffe Side:
Oughtibridge:
Option considerations • The embankments would be designed to minimise the impact on the local landscape. • Some diversions would be required to footpaths but the Council would ensure access is maintained during and after construction, and improve access where possible. • Minimise impacts on ancient woodland habitats and trees and identify wider opportunities for tree planting, habitat creation and improving the environment. • Assess the impact of temporary flood water storage on people, property, trees and habitats. • Consider the impact of the work on buried archaeological remains that may exist.
Option considerations • We would look for opportunities to improve the park landscapes as part of the scheme. • The park and sports ground would remain dry under normal conditions and would only be wet for short periods during significant storms. • Plans and resources would be put in place to clean quickly after a flood to reduce disruption. • There would be temporary impacts for park users during construction, including some footpath diversions, but these would look to be minimised. • Some tree loss may be required, but impacts would be minimised and opportunities identified to offset these with wider tree planting and habitat creation where possible.
Beeley Wood:

The Council have to follow a set process to secure the funding needed and your views will help to select the best options for your community and the city and put together the project business case. When funding is secured, planning permission and environmental consents, flood measures will start to be built. This could be as soon as 2019. The Council will provide feedback on what you have said and how it has informed the approach. Further consultation will take place as the project progresses to design, planning and construction. All consultation materials and information about flood prevention can be found at www.floodprotectionsheffield.com.

APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME radfield Parish Council has once again teamed up with Hillsborough and Sheffield College to offer a horticultural apprenticeship scheme. The council’s latest apprenticeship scheme runs in the wake of the successful completion of three preceding horticulture apprenticeship programmes, with one successful apprentice now based full time at the Parish Council and the other two attaining employment elsewhere in horticulture roles. The Parish Council have also run a Business Admin apprenticeship scheme with the apprentice also attaining employment in the business sector. “I am a great supporter of our apprenticeship scheme,” says Council Clerk/RFO, Teresa Bisatt.“It gives young people a first step on the career ladder and a valuable qualification. I am delighted that, in previous schemes, we have been able to offer full time employment to one of our apprentices and that the other apprentices have achieved employment elsewhere. We want more young people to see horticulture as an attractive career. “We wish our current apprentices, Jack and Joanne, the best of luck in their new roles and hope to build on the succession of previous years.” The two new apprentices, Jack Powell and Joanne Deakin, were taken on from August this year and will complete their qualification over the next two years.
B
Jack is currently undertaking his Horticultural Level Two apprenticeship at Hillsborough College after successfully completing Level One combined with media studies. “The variety of the work has been great so far,“ he said.“Working indoors isn’t for me and I love my time spent in the park, learning everything from seed sowing and strimming to pruning shrub beds. “This is invaluable as you can’t teach everything in the classroom. I think a lot of people my age don’t realise just how varied roles in this sector really are.” A former English Heritage volunteer and head gardener at the Rockingham Arms Hotel, Wentworth, Joanne is currently undertaking her Horticultural Level Three apprenticeship at Sheffield College, after successfully completing Levels One and Two. “I would like to continue to further my career in the industry and work my way towards becoming a head gardener,” she said. “I’d never previously considered horticulture as a potential career path but I’ve been very surprised about what this role actually involves. From needing to know how to run a business and tend a garden, to supervisory skills. I’ve also been using my digital skills much more than I expected.” The pair are working alongside the existing groundsmen Philip Ashton and David Palmer.

MEMORIAL
St Nicholas’ Church at last year’s event
The team of volunteers
Light fantastic LAST YEAR’S POPPY MEMORIAL TRAIL MIGHT STILL BE FRESH IN THE MIND BUT ATTENTION HAS ALREADY TURNED TO THIS YEAR’S EVENT – A RED, WHITE AND BLUE CELEBRATION TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. ome of you may remember last year when St Nicholas’ Church in Bradfield could be seen glowing from miles around. In November 2015, a local team created the Poppy Memorial Trail – an ambitious project to commemorate those family members and friends who died in the First World War and the many wars since. Thousands of locals gathered to view the spectacular poppy illumination, which was projected onto the side of the church in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday. The event was such a success that the team have returned to mark 100 years since the Battle of the Somme with a Red, White and Blue Celebration on Friday 14 October. As well as being a nationally-recognised date to celebrate those who fought on the battlefield in France, it is also the 100th anniversary of the zeppelin air raid in Sheffield, where 24 people lost their lives, making the event all the more poignant. Sue Hague, owner of company Pinkdotinc, is heading the project along with a number of enthusiastic volunteers, including photographer Russell Hague, Rev. Alan Isaacson of St Nicholas’ Church, Andrew Vickers of Stoneface Creative, Richard Godley of East Peak Country Side Associate, Colin Brown from Help For Heroes and Rory Clayton from The Royal British Legion. Once again, this will be a fundraising event in aid of St Nicholas’ Church, Help For Heroes and The Royal British Legion. The team have already raised £250 at a commemoration event this summer at The
S
Royal Hotel in Dungworth, and after the success of last year, Alec Berry, of local business A2B Exhibitions, will head up a sponsored abseil down Rocher Crags behind St Nicholas’ Church. The church doors will open at 2pm and guests will be greeted by the Bradfield Dungworth School choir, who will be performing songs from the First World War. This will be followed by a short tour of the First World War graves and war memorials in church grounds at 4pm by local historian and WW1 Heritage Group member, Malcolm Nunn. There will be a Q&A session with military cadets at 5pm and then the church gates will close for an outdoor service at 6pm. As the sun sets, searchlights will illuminate the church from both sides of the valley. Rev. Alan Isaacson will give a touching service dedicated to the fallen and a 50-gun salute from the local clay pigeon shooters, organised by Shelly Beal, will take place before the children from Dungworth Bradfield School release glowing red balloons and the magnificent poppy illumination is revealed. The gates will then re-open, welcoming the crowds back into the church for hand-bell ringing and a performance by the Loxley Silver Band who have recently returned from their concert at the Menin Gate, before a final service at 10pm and the search lights and illumination fade out at 10.30pm. The searchlights will be positioned at the original site where searchlights spotted enemy planes in the sky during the Second World War, making this addition to the light show @SixerRMC
all the more significant. A roll of honour is displayed in the church and as they leave the church to release the red balloons, each child will say one of the names on the list to create a more personal connection to those individuals. The WW1 Heritage Group has researched a number of men from the parish – both those who survived and died in the war – and have been connecting them to their families. Arthur Wingfield was one of the fallen soldiers in the Battle of the Somme and 100 years on, 13 members of his family – some local and some who live much further away – will be reuniting for the event. “Most families have a story about someone who served in the First World War and this is a great chance for local people to come together,” says Sue. “This event is about remembering those men who laid down their lives so we could stand here today.” Last years’ event raising approximately £8,000 and Sue hopes this years’ will make double. Help the Poppy Memorial team reach their target by visiting their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/thepoppy-memorial-trail. The programme for the Battle of the Somme Remembrance and Red, White and Blue Celebration is now available from a number of local businesses including The Royal Hotel in Dungworth, The Plough Inn, The Old Horns Inn, the Bradfield Brewery shop and Stannington Library. It costs £1 and all proceeds will go to The Royal British Legion, Help For Heroes and St Nicholas’ Church. Sixer | www.sheffieldvibe.com 35

With the latest courses providing National Association of Estate Agents or Association of Residential Lettings Agents qualifications. The lettings team – headed by Caroline Crabtree – comprises Bex Morley, Lewis Tattersall and Dan Henshaw, who combined have seen an increase in rentals of 50 per cent during 2016. Many properties are fully managed but some are let on a let only basis, where the landlord manages the properties after Hunters have found the tenant and carried out references, inventories and legal agreements. Hunters Estate and Letting Agents put people first and understand that there is much more to moving than just getting the best price for your property. With almost 50 properties already put on sale, and half @SixerRMC
already sold, Rightmove’s latest comparisons of estate agents in Hillsborough – conducted at the end of May 2016 – unveiled Hunters as the fastest-selling agent, with an average selling period of just six weeks. Latest figures also revealed that 97 per cent of clients would recommend Hunters Hillsborough for sales and lettings, with the branch recently receiving the first of many 5/5 star Google reviews from Mr and Mrs Smith (names have been changed to maintain confidentiality). “We can’t praise this branch of Hunters enough. It took 12 weeks from going on the market to moving house, and we couldn’t be happier. They were full of helpful advice, with regards to selling, and made the sales brochure look incredible. The branch is brilliant and helped make the whole process as smooth as possible, and almost enjoyable. We’d definitely recommend them to anyone considering moving in the S6 area. The conveyance solicitors attached to the branch are also marvellous.” Call in or telephone the office on 0114 242 4260. INTERVIEW
Forward thinker IN A CAREER THAT HAS TAKEN HIM ALL OVER THE WORLD, BASKETBALL STAR OLU BABALOLA HAS SETTLED IN SHEFFIELD AND HAS BIG PLAN FOR THE FUTURE. BY MOLLY McGREEVY.
O
lu Babalola was 14 the first time he shot a basketball… it was a moment that would change the course of his
life. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I knew I was going to America. From then, I knew.” A talented sportsman from a young age, Olu spent his teens playing football for the Arsenal youth team and winning on the athletics track, but all that stopped once he’d shot his first ball. “My mum wasn’t happy about that at all,” said the 6’6” power forward. “I told her I was playing basketball and going to America. I had the vision and I was so locked in on it. I watched it 24/7, I played it, I got in trouble with the neighbour for practising dribbling in the house. I was so focused on that one sport. I put all my eggs in one basket and I did well.” Olu’s career has taken him all over the world, playing in America, Europe and the UK. Here, he has played for the Newcastle Eagles, followed by a stint at the Everton Tigers before playing for the Sheffield Sharks for four years. He’s set up home in Hillsborough and when he’s not focussing on basketball, is working on establishing a new restaurant, the Wing Kings. Olu started playing for his local club, Hackney Towers basketball team, but he was soon in America, playing for a high school team in New Jersey. He made the first team, won player of the year and got over 1,000 points for his team. His success led to a basketball scholarship at Clemson University, where the quality of play took a big step up. “The university I went to, that was no joke. At the time, the conference we were in, without a shadow of a doubt, was the toughest in America.” Whilst playing in the States, Olu played against basketball royalty, but instead of being intimidated by some of the country’s best players, he just kept playing ball. “I played against all the biggest names you 42 Sixer | www.sheffieldvibe.com
see now on TV, and even at the level I was very comfortable. That’s where I got my confidence in playing ball,” said Olu, who is nonchalant about his success. The man that helped Olu get to America was his coach Joe White, who on first impressions scared teenage Olu. “He was the biggest guy I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Olu. “I remember when I first met him, I walked in the gym, I thought he was a bear he was so big.” The pair soon formed a father-son bond, with Joe helping Olu at every stage of his career. “He was just the most amazing human being I have ever met. I want to influence people the way he did, even if I can get ten per cent of what he did. He was touched by God, he was a special man.” Whilst Olu was in America, Joe was diagnosed with cancer. He died from the disease in 2013 but his influence over Olu’s life remains strong. “Sometimes I just really miss Joe, I don’t know what to do in some situations, and I try and reach him and just think what he would say and do.” “My son is called Joseph after him, I know I’m not as special as him but I try and inspire not just my own kids, but anyone I interact with.” As well as toddler Joseph, Olu has an eight-year-old stepson and a 12-year-old daughter, who is already one of the fastest girls in her school on the athletics track. Olu wants to inspire not just his own children, but as many as he can, into sport. “A lot of kids don’t do any sport, and I find that so weird, they’re just smoking cigarettes and hanging out and nonsense. But if they did a sport they wouldn’t have time for the nonsense, so I tell them not to quit. Just keep playing, I always try and tell kids that.” “I always said no to coaching but I feel like a basketball player needs to teach kids how to @SixerRMC
play ball if they want to learn, otherwise who is else is going to teach them?” Olu has big ambitions for his youngest child; Joseph already has a top basketball hoop set up in the living room, and is tall for his age. “It’s my goal in life to get Joseph in the NBA. I didn’t make it to the NBA but I’ve played against all of them so I understand the highest level.” Despite never playing in the NBA, Olu has had a hugely successful career that has seen him travel the world. He’s played in basketball leagues in Italy, Sweden, Cyprus and Belgium and has represented Great Britain at an international level around 20 times. At the moment he is without a team, but basketball is on the back-burner whilst he focuses on his other passion in life, food. Having bought his own food trailer in the summer, he started trading with Wing Kings, and so far the venture has proved incredibly successful. “I’ve had this idea in my head for a long time, and I don’t see any restaurants in the city or even the country that sells soul food, real soul food.” “So we started trading this summer, every event has been amazing we’ve sold out at every event. We’ve decided to open a full restaurant at Kelham Island, which will be themed. When you walk in there you’ll know straight away that a basketball player did it. The waitresses will wear jerseys, there are lots of exciting things happening.” “Food is a huge passion, all my team mates know that I’ll feed them, just come to my house.” Basketball won’t ever be replaced though, and Olu is looking to play for a team close by so he can run the restaurant and keep playing ball. “The biggest thing about basketball is all the people I’ve met, I’ve built a brotherhood of friends in America and England that I wouldn’t trade for nothing.”

ouveau Treatment Room in Hillsborough is the place to go for permanent tattooing of eyebrows, eyeliners, lips and beauty spots. These remarkable transformations can help anyone look younger and redefine each individual’s natural features. Treatments focus on the individual client’s face type and features, and what matters to you – after all, it is the most noticeable thing about you that everyone sees. The most popular treatment offered is eyebrow tattooing. Enhanced eyebrows look totally natural so people will never know… unless you tell them! Jacqueline Price has trained with the worldrenowned leaders in permanent cosmetic artistry (Nouveau Contour). Her work and professional skill set can be viewed within her portfolio – please feel free to take a look and make your own mind up. All equipment used at Nouveau Treatment Room is high-end, industry recommended, precision quality and 100per cent safe. There are many different colour shades and tones, enabling the right pigment choice for
each individual. The pigments are unique – they are NOT the same as body tattooing pigments which can fade into a nasty blue colour. All cosmetic pigments used are designed to fade out naturally over the course of a few years – they are made under strict, sterile pharmaceutical conditions and are approved by the medical health profession. Jacqueline offer free consultations – anyone considering any of the procedures can have a 48 hour patch test prior to deciding. There are also some forms to fill in as part of Jacqueline’s commitment to health and safety; they are nothing to worry about and she can answer any questions. All clients must be 18 or over.
So, who does cosmetic tattooing appeal to? 1. People who want freedom from applying make-up. 2. It is ideal for men and women who want to look their best at all times. 3. It is the perfect solution for people with allergies to conventional make-up. 4. It saves precious time for those with hectic lifestyles.
5. Ideal if you are physically unable to apply make-up or struggle with eyesight. 6. Great for contact lens wearers. 7. An instant solution if you suffer with sparse eyelashes/brows. 8. Correction of asymmetrical facial features. 9. People who have had cancer treatments. 10. People with alopecia. 11. Burns patients. … and the list goes on. Jacqueline says: “All my qualifications are displayed and accessible to clients. I am a fully licensed professional with a varied professional career. All procedures are carried out using a topical anaesthetic which is fully approved and regulated – this prevents clients from feeling the pain of discomfort typically associated with tattooing. I believe wholeheartedly that all my procedures are value for money – and a great treat for yourself or someone special. Gift vouchers are available at request. I hope you have enjoyed reading this and you have found it helpful.” Please do not hesitate to contact me on 07891 027492.

BEFORE AND AFTER... Nicky’s 40th birthday kick-started her into action to lose weight
Weigh to go SUPER SLIMMERS WIN AWARDS. limming World groups across the country have been holding their annual Woman of the Year Competitions. Out of the 149 group finalists across South Yorkshire and Chesterfield, Nicky Faulkner, Stef McCarthy and Wendy Kershaw, with a weight loss of over 16st between them, were invited to attend the district final. Stef, who attends Hillsborough’s Thursday morning group with Christine, said: “I really couldn’t have done it without the support of my consultant and friends in the group. When I first walked into the group wearing tight size 20 clothes, I felt a failure. “My self-esteem was at rock bottom and if it wasn’t for my friend joining, I don’t think I’d have gone. I got such a lovely welcome. I could have cried when I stood on the scales, but Christine said that would be the last time I’d see that weight. It felt like the first time in forever that someone believed in me.” Stef lost 5lb in her first week and in the

following week, received a 1/2st award. She stopped the high-calorie takeaways and started to enjoy cooking ‘fakeaways’ instead. The seven-day meal planners from the Slimming World Magazine also helped. Now four-and-a-half stone lighter and a target member with free lifetime membership, in a comfortable size 10, she has a new lease for life. Nicky’s journey started when she made a ‘things to do before you’re 40’ list. “Following a visit to the hospital with a hip complaint and being told that I was borderline-obese, I decided to heed the doctor’s advice and lose weight. “After I’d visited Rome on my 39th birthday and flew over the Statue of Liberty in a helicopter on my 40th to fulfil two of my goals, and a few months of unsuccessful dieting, I decided to step into my local Slimming World at Wadsley Bridge Working Men’s Club and have never looked back! “I’ve found it so easy to follow, fulfilling, varied, and with the help of my consultant Kirsty and new found ‘family’, I’m now ontarget with a five-stone weight loss. I feel more energetic, healthier, brighter and happier. My wardrobe has gone from slouchy and black to slinky and colourful. “I’m loving the new me and have no intention of bringing back the 30-something version. I’ll be sticking to the group and hopefully, I can help to motivate others too.” Wendy is a different woman than she was 18 months ago. Overweight, out-of-breath and with a range of health problems, it was after being bedridden with flu for three weeks that Wendy made a pact that when she recovered, she would to do something about it. She joined Crookes’ Monday evening @SixerRMC
Slimming World group and 14 months later, lost an amazing six stone. “I can’t tell you how much my life has changed! Of course, my physical appearance has changed; I’ve gone from a size 24 to a size 10, I’m enjoying healthy foods and I have so much more energy, but the side effects are also a normal BMI and a blood pressure reading of an 18-year-old. I am medication free and my painful joints are a thing of the past. “My consultant, Emma, started a running buddies group on Facebook. I decided to do the NHS Couch to 5K, but I had forgotten how to run. She ran with me to start off with and that was all the encouragement I needed. I can now run the equivalent of a half marathon. “Slimming World saved me in so many ways and I will be eternally grateful.” Slimming World Tel: 0114 2339304 Mobile: 07824 806737 Email: jogroves@sky.com www.slimmingworld.co.uk
“I could have cried when I stood on the scales, but Christine said that would be the last time I’d see that weight. It felt like the first time in forever that someone believed in me.”

Green-fingered advice GARDEN EXPERT CHRIS BAINES IS PROUD OF HIS STANNINGTON ROOTS AND IS ENCOURAGING THE COMMUNITY TO GET BEHIND THE RIVELIN VALLEY CONSERVATION GROUP – YOUR HELP COULD MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. reating a garden which helps wildlife flourish may sound like common sense to gardeners these days, but as little as 30 years ago, most people thought the concept strange. Chris Baines, former Stannington resident and the author of How to Make a Wildlife Garden (now called the RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening) says that when his book first came out in 1985, it caused quite a stir. “I think what people found odd was that you’d be encouraging what gardeners had always thought of as pests and weeds,” he explains. “People loved having birds, butterflies and hedgehogs, they’d just not made the connection that you could actually

encourage them, which required a different attitude. “There was a gut feeling amongst a lot of gardeners, but the idea that this was something you needed to work at was a bit of a surprise. Before that time, a lot of people assumed the answer to every gardener’s problem was more chemicals.” Chris’ parents met through their love of walking – a passion which continued throughout their relationship and which occupied the formative years of his life. He’d always been encouraged to roam and has pleasant memories of being “dragged through the heather” from a young age. His father taught at Stannington School, @SixerRMC

GARDENING

where Chris also benefitted from a hands-on approach to learning and interacting with nature. Gardening was another love of his parents which was instilled in Chris and he remembers the joy of growing plants from seedlings and admiring the beauty of Rivelin Valley throughout his teens, before moving to Kent in the 1960s to study horticulture and then to Birmingham to study landscape architecture. Chris has since had an interesting and varied career. He worked for the Sheffield City Parks Department, including garden contracting and garden design, and worked on major projects in Brixton and Liverpool during the 1980s riots to make ‘troubled areas’ greener. He lectured for 15 years and was awarded an Honorary Professorship from Birmingham City University in 1986 and an Honorary Doctorate from Sheffield Hallam University in 1995. Chris has also made many TV appearances including in a regional series called Your Country Needs You (the model for Countryfile) in the 1980s and children’s environmental show, The Ark, which won the International Wildscreen Award in 1987. The book, The Wild Side of Town, won the Conservation Book Prize in same year. He won the Chelsea Medal for creating the first wildlife garden for the Chelsea Flower Show in 1985, co-founded the first urban wildlife trust in Birmingham and the Black Country in 1979, spent over 30 years as the National Vice President of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts, was awarded the annual medal of the RSPB in 2004, the Sir Peter Scott Medal in 2014 and currently chairs the independent panel that advises The National Grid. Despite now living in Wolverhampton, Chris often visits his mother in Sheffield and still admires Rivelin Valley. He is particularly supportive of the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group, who are working with the Sheffield City Council to improve flood defences in the
area. Chris explains that the valley is not only an interesting spot for wildlife lovers, but for history buffs. “A hundred years ago, Rivelin was a thriving industrial area,” says Chris. “There were 21 working mills. Some of which were in operation right up to the mid-1930s. It’s interesting to walk along and find evidence of its past. You really get a sense that this was once the heart of Stannington.” So what can local people do to preserve this important piece of Sheffield’s heritage? “You can pay £3 to be a supporter of the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group. With a good number of supporters, we can make a big difference. You can also volunteer to help on clean-up days or simply go walk there and appreciate it. It’s beautiful. The landscape really changes with the seasons.” And with winter fast approaching, you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s nothing you can do with your garden to inspire wildlife right now. However, there are a few ways you can prepare for next spring. “Planting lots of bulbs that will flower early next spring is a good thing to do,” says Chris. “Leaving some of the seed heads on herbaceous plants as well, when all the encouragement is to tidy everything up for winter. A lot of the seed heads are important for birds and are increasingly being recognised as important for things like ladybirds to hibernate in. “Think of your garden as a service station for your neighbourhood. If you have sunflower seeds through the winter and nectar in the early spring, then you’ll get the birds through the winter and the butterflies in the spring.” The RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening has been continuously in print since it was first published 31 years ago and whilst it has changed the perspectives of many household gardeners, Chris’ feels there is more work to be done. “Looking back, it is very satisfying to see @SixerRMC
Credit: Carrol Sheppard (RHS)
how far we have come. Gardening to encourage wildlife has become second nature for millions,” he says. “After 40 years of encouraging people to change their gardens, it’s time to spread these ideas. Managing our surroundings is now central to the conservation movement across the wider landscape, in the countryside as well as in towns and cities.” The fully-revised and updated RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening by Chris Baines, published by Frances Lincoln is £25 (hardback) and is available from www.rhsshop.co.uk.

To get your tastebuds tingling you can choose from one of five delicious starters including pulled gammon terrine with piccalilli syrup, spiced apple purée and sour dough toast, or why not choose the garlic mushrooms with focaccia croute and a beetroot reduction? The main courses are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit with options including the traditional dish of roast turkey with all the festive trimmings; shank of lamb slowly braised with redcurrants and rosemary with caramelised onion mash, or for vegetarians, there’s the roasted winter vegetable and butterbean cottage pie with red onion gravy. Make sure you save room for the best of all courses though, as on the desserts menu you will find treats in the form of Christmas pudding with rum sauce, warm chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream, lemon and mascarpone cheesecake with limoncello syrup and, for savoury fans, a selection of cheeses with celery, chutney and crackers. Once you’ve finished your meal you can head onto the casino floor to try your luck on the casino tables with your £5 chip. @SixerRMC
Don’t worry if you haven’t played before as the croupiers are always on hand to offer advice on how to play. Between 26 and 30 December you can enjoy three courses for just £14.95. Just make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment. Napoleons is often referred to as the friendly casino with customers saying that it is a place they feel comfortable to come to, often remarking on the enjoyable relaxed atmosphere. Coumes Spring Children’s Centre
Bradfield Dungworth
OSBORNE HOUSE COMMUNITY NURSERY
Coumes Spring Children’s Centre celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, and over that time it has grown from 16 places to 34 plus. For owner Julia and all of the staff, it has been a brilliant journey and a privilege to work with so many children and families over the years. Coumes Spring provides six baby places in the Little Stars room with its own garden. The room is well established, having been open for ten years. Children then move into the Rising Stars room, which operates a ‘free-flow’ system for much of the day so that children can play outside whenever they like. The outdoor area includes a vegetable garden and the children are proud of the produce they have grown and tasted. Being situated in the grounds of Oughtibridge School, Coumes Spring is well placed to provide a breakfast and after-school club called The Kingfisher Club for children up to 11 years old.
Bradfield Dungworth Primary School is a small school with big ambitions for its pupils. The school has a family atmosphere and works closely with parents to create a positive learning environment. They tailor their teaching methods to suit the needs of each child and had excellent feedback in their latest OFSTED report. The inspector said: “The children are exceptionally friendly, polite, and caring”, “They love coming to school and are very proud of it” and that “Teachers motivate pupils by giving stimulating tasks and creating a supportive climate for learning.” The school has four classrooms, a hall and an adventure playground. They provide a curriculum which is both interesting and imaginative. They also have a variety of after-school clubs including RuggerEds, drama and singing.
Osborne House offers a full day placement in a setting that encourages children’s development through play and learning, starting from three months of age through to five year olds. They have five different rooms that suit each stage of their development, meaning they continue to grow with other children of their age group and development level. Set in a large Victorian building with age ranges spread over three floors, Osbourne House offers an incredible amount of varied outdoor play areas which give children one of the best places to burn off excess energy and discover new abilities in the process. It is Osborne House’s ethos to make the nursery genuinely accessible to all children and families from the local community and surrounding areas. They recognise and acknowledge the city’s diverse community and we value and embrace diversity within the nursery.

PET ANGEL CRISSIE HODGSON TREATS EVERY ANIMAL AS IF IT WAS HER OWN. ogs, cats, horses, hens…There’s no animal too big or too small for Pet Angels, the pet care business that’s been looking after Sheffield’s furry friends for the last 15 years. Set up by lifelong animal lover Crissie Hodgson, Pet Angels provides pet sitting, dog walking and equine care plus a taxi service to vet appointments in her specially adapted van. Crissie, who’s been working with animals since she was ten years-old, has years of experience looking after animals; she’s worked in America with dressage horses and has worked at kennels and catteries in the UK. Pet Angels look after animals seven days a week, this may include walking dogs whilst their owners are at work or caring for animals whilst their owners are on holiday. For Crissie, looking after animals is a way of life, she said: “I look after other people’s animals the way I would look after my own. Each animal is special to someone and I will look after them whatever it takes.” As well as looking after people’s pets, Crissie has set up Recycle for Rescues, which collects blankets, bedding and other pet essentials to donate to animal charities and rescue centres both home and away. Crissie said: “There’s a lot of people that do a lot of rescue work, and end up with a house full of animals and need help.” The inspiration for Recycle for Rescues
D
came about after Crissie adopted a Romanian street dog and saw what a difference bedding, toys and other essential items made to the lives of rescue animals. At the moment, Recycle for Rescues is collecting donations for Friends of Ferals, who look after the feral cat population of Sheffield. The charity works to trap and neuter feral cats, before returning them to
their environment and providing them with food and shelter for the rest of their life. Through her commitment to the happiness and welfare of not only the animals Pet Angels looks after but to all disadvantaged animals, Crissie has built up a shining reputation in the area. She said: “Many of my customers have been with me since the beginning of Pet Angels, my new customers come from then telling their friends about the business.” From just £9 for a dog walk or £6 per visit which includes feeding, cleaning and administering any medication, Crissie helps to take care of your pets when you’re not able to. For £15 she also provides a taxi service for those unable to get to kennels, catteries and vets in a van that is equipped with carry boxes and crates for each individual animal. To set up a pet care arrangement where your pet will be loved unconditionally by an animal expert in the comfort of its own home, or if you have some donations for needy pets in the area, contact Crissie today. CHARITY
John with his pram (left) and with his British Empire Medal (right)
Distance No Object WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND JOHN BURKHILL’S FAMOUS PRAM? THE LOCAL LEGEND REVEALS ALL IN A NEW BOOK THAT IS RAISING MONEY FOR A CHARITY CLOSE TO HIS HEART, MACMILLAN. o doubt you’ve seen him. You’ve probably even read about him. But you’ve never heard his incredible, inspiring story told all in his own words – until now. Yes, John Burkhill – Sheffield’s famous ‘mad man with the pram’ – has penned his long-awaited autobiography. Published by RMC Media, it’s the fascinating tale of a truly unique life. ‘Distance No Object: Sheffield’s Man with the Pram’ is full of moving memories, insightful pictures from John’s own archive and a good dose of Yorkshire humour. From his early days in Sheffield, to his fundraising races and walks across the country, to the celebrities (and royals!) he’s rubbed shoulders with along the way, it really is quite a story. With his green wig, giant foam hand and colourful pram – not to mention the shorts he wears whatever the weather – John has become a familiar sight on the streets of the Steel City. Even at 77 years old, he spends almost every day walking around Sheffield collecting money for the cause closest to his heart, Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s an amazing level of dedication – and one inspired by a terrible personal tragedy. John’s beloved daughter Karen went into hospital for a routine operation, but complications meant she ended up on life support, and she died soon after. Within a
N
year, his wife June passed away from cancer. For John, this loss was a devastating blow – but the tragedy spurred him on to devote his life to helping others in need. A keen sportsman since childhood, John had developed a passion for race walking in the 1960s. Ever since, he spent most weekends taking part in races up and down the country, often raising considerable sums for charity in the process. After the loss of his wife and daughter, John dedicated every spare moment to these fundraising walks. Having raised thousands of pounds for various causes over the years, on his retirement at the turn of the millennium John decided to focus on one charity in particular, Macmillan. Since then, he has collected more than £350,000 for the charity – but the determined pensioner says he won’t stop until he’s reached £1million. In his green Macmillan outfit, with wig to match, John looks quite the character. But his awe-inspiring achievements have won him personal recognition too. In 2012, he was voted by the people of Sheffield to be a torchbearer when the Olympic torch relay passed through the city. A year later, he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list. Co-written with RMC’s Adam Kay, ‘Distance No Object’ tells these stories and many more. And as part of John’s fundraising @SixerRMC
mission, all proceeds after costs from the sale of the book will be going directly to Macmillan Cancer Support. But what’s the story behind John’s famous pram? To find out, you’ll have to pick up a copy of the book for yourself – and help Sheffield’s ‘mad man’ towards his magical million pound goal in the process. For John Burkhill, distance really is no object. ‘Distance No Object: Sheffield’s Man with the Pram’ is available from Amazon priced at £9.99. But can you guess exactly where in the S6 postcode area he was when he took these photographs? Congratulations to those of you who guessed where Simon was in last month’s pictures – Stannington flats.
Swann Morton walkers hit the heights for St Luke’s Hospice Eight men, one dog and some of the most challenging hills in the Peak District … that’s what it takes to raise more than £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. The team of walkers from Sheffield company, Swann Morton, and their fourlegged friend, took part in a 12-mile sponsored Derbyshire walk in support of Sheffield’s only hospice, taking in Mam Tor, Back Tor, Lose Hill and Win Hill. Together with the proceeds of a bake sale at the company’s headquarters in Owlerton, they raised a final total of £1,178.20. “This was a fantastic result and one that really does make an enormous difference to the lives of our patients,” said St Luke’s corporate fundraising manager, Joasia Lesniak. “It’s thanks to the continued support of companies like Swann Morton that we are able to maintain our support for people throughout Sheffield, both in the hospice and in the wider community.” To find out more about how you can help St. Luke’s Hospice, visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk.

A local netball team are celebrating after being named the best High Five squad in Yorkshire. Nook Lane Junior School’s Y6 High 5 Netball team won the regional EIS tournament which involved playing against teams from North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Humberside. Out of seven games, they won five, lost two, but still managed to gain a point for the matches they lost. “They scored a total of 56 goals during the tournament and this was an amazing achievement in itself given the time they had to actually score was 18 minutes per game!” said one of the member’s mums, Amanda Denton. “I am very proud. They worked really hard and deserve to have the title of Yorkshire Champions! We saw some amazing stuff from S6. I wish all the girls the best of luck in their new school Bradfield secondary and hope that their success continues there.”
