OPENING

Absolutely fabulous AFTER OPENING THE SHOPPING CENTRE IN 2016, JOANNA LUMLEY RETURNED TO FOX VALLEY FOR THE UNVEILING OF SANDERSONS’ NEW SPA. he team at Sandersons Department Store at Fox Valley welcomed back their Absolutely Fabulous friend Joanna Lumley OBE for the launch of the store’s unique new Wellness Spa and Organics area. Hundreds of shoppers turned out for the chance to meet the celebrity guest who spent time chatting to staff and shoppers as well as being given a tour of the award-winning shopping centre by managing director of Dransfield Properties, Mark Dransfield. Two beautifully designed treatment rooms as well as a relaxing and calm, lounge-style seating area has been created – with a reception area and access from the ground floor of the main store. Both the Spa and the Sandersons Organics concept have been created to build on the lasting legacy of the store’s founder Deborah Holmes, who passed away in January this year. Deborah was passionate about the importance of the ingredients used in skincare and beauty products as well as appreciating complementary and alternative therapies. Joanna Lumley officially opened the

north Sheffield retail development in June 2016 when Sandersons was still being built. Deborah Holmes gave Ms Lumley a tour of the site and showed her the vision of the store. The Absolutely Fabulous star returned to the store to see that vision come to fruition and to open the new Wellness Spa and Organics. Ms Lumley said: “I can’t tell you how exciting it has been to be here. The first time I came to Fox Valley I thought it was so perfect. Today I have come back and its lovely to see that all the trees have grown, everything has settled in, some of the shops have changed and it is all looking just sensational. “Opening that beautiful spa in

memory of Debs and being in Sandersons today has just been wonderful. This is such a fantastic place; it is as if it was always here and as if it is as old as the hills that surround it and just as beautiful.” Mark Dransfield, who is the managing director of Dransfield Properties, said: “It’s been such a proud day for the whole Sandersons team to have the opportunity to show Joanna Lumley our lovely store and it’s been such a wonderful tribute to Debs. We really have set out to create something special here at Sandersons Spa and Organics.” The Sandersons Spa team have received specialist training in all the products including a fact-finding training visit to Voya at Sligo in Ireland where the company harvests the seaweed for its detoxifying treatments. The launch of the Sandersons Spa comes just a week after the store was awarded “Best New Retailer” at the Drapers Independent Awards. Customers can now book treatments for the Spa through the Sandersons website on www.sandersonsdeptstore.co.uk.

Keep on running GIVE YOUR WEEKEND A FRESH START – HEAD DOWN TO HILLSBOROUGH PARK FOR THE WEEKLY PARKRUN. ASHLEY BIRCH SPEAKS TO EVENT DIRECTOR JOHN LIDDLE ABOUT ITS BENEFITS – AND GROWING POPULARITY. or many S6 residents (this writer included), 9am on a Saturday morning might not seem like the ideal time to get some exercise in, but over the last six years thousands of local runners have been doing just that. You’ve probably seen them, runners from all walks of life turning up in leafy Hillsborough Park to take part in parkrun, a free weekly run, which takes place at the same time in parks and outdoor spaces across the world. The hugely popular event celebrates its 15th anniversary this October and we caught up with Hillsborough parkrun event director John Liddle to see if he could convince us to drag ourselves out of bed, dig out the running shoes from the back of the cupboard and brace ourselves for a brisk 5km run around our local park... “People can get intimidated by running,” says John. “They’ll see high-vis vests going out, or runners on the Olympics and they’ll think, ‘that’s not for me’. parkrun is literally for everybody and anybody. It’s free, which really is so important, and people will see that there’s other people just like them, people on their own journey. It’s a broad church.” parkrun started with just 13 people turning up in a park in London. From a team of just five volunteers, it’s grown to what it is today with over four million people having done a parkrun in 22 different countries. “We’ve been going ourselves since 2013. It started off small, our average numbers in the first year were about 5070 per week and every year we’ve grown, to an average of about 400 runners this year. “Every parkrun is the same, it’s 9am on a Saturday morning and it’s free of

F

20 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

charge, that’s the main thing. It’s free for all and anybody can run, or walk, or jog, or do whatever you want. We have fast people at 16-17 minutes, and we have a tail walker with every run and they come in around 50-55 minutes. What I like about the Hillsborough course is that it’s three laps so, especially for new starters, if they only want to do one or two laps, that’s fine. They can start out gently.” To date, there have been 344 events in Hillsborough Park since February 2013,

The Hillsborough parkrun has had an average of 400 runners this year

running every single Saturday morning ‘whether it’s the middle of winter and it’s hailing, or its a gorgeous summers day’. The only time you won’t see throngs of runners hot-footing it round the park is when Tramlines is on. In that time, nearly 10,000 different runners have taken part in the Hillsborough event, for a total of 73,789 runs, and over 1,300 people have signed up to Hillsborough this year alone. And getting involved couldn’t be simpler. It’s just a case of registering online beforehand and you’re good to go. Once registered, you receive a barcode, which allows you to take part in any parkrun around the world. The participant’s barcode is scanned at the beginning and end of the run and their time is either texted or emailed to them. To keep the event free for all, every parkrun is run by a dedicated team of

volunteers providing vital support in their free time. John explains: “Nearly all the volunteers started out as runners. I started out in 2013 and ran for the first two or three years. The person who was running it then, his job changed, so I took it over. We have a core team and every week we have about 20-25 volunteers who do timekeeping, or marshalling or scanning, or handing out the finishing tokens. It really is a super thing to see.” All abilities, shapes and sizes can be seen on the parkruns, from people running with prams and dogs to runners of a certain vintage. John said: “Roy is our oldest member and he’s 84-year-old. He’s there every week. It’s honestly amazing. “The good thing is, because you get your time every week, people want to beat it, but getting a PB isn’t the main

purpose of parkrun, it’s a social event, it’s a community, it’s not a race! “People see us on Facebook. People will turn up in the parks and say, ‘what’s this going on?’. The running clubs, whether it’s Steel City Striders or Hallamshire Harriers, they all know about parkrun. There’s over 600 in the country now.” In Sheffield alone there are already five parkruns with events at Endcliffe Park, which was one of the very first ones in the country, Concorde, Graves Park and Manor Castle. With plans for a sixth run starting in the autumn at Millhouses Park there really is no excuse not to get involved. “There’s even a thing called parkrun tourism where people collect badges, like you and I would have collected football cards. They’re virtual badges and people have set up websites to

“You feel good at the end. You’ve done 5km, you’ve met your friends and you’ve set yourself up for the day. It’s free, it’s open to everybody, just give it a go!” record them. So for instance, my sister and her husband, they’ve just set up their own parkrun in Kent, but they spent two years doing every parkrun within the M25. “One of our regulars went to Grimsby because he hadn’t got a ‘G’ in his collection, but he hadn’t looked on the Facebook page to see that it was actually cancelled that week, so he drove 100 miles to Grimsby, which thankfully he took in good humour!” Ok, so I think we’d like to stay a little closer to home, but I’m definitely warming to the idea. What would John say to someone like me, who is looking for that extra push to get involved? “Just come down and volunteer first of all. You will recognise someone there, whether it’s a friend or a neighbour. You can even just come and watch if you don’t want to volunteer, or just walk round if you want. You’ll never be the last person, the tail walker is always the last person. “You’ll see it’s not just about physical exercise. People do it for their own 22 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

mental health as well. That’s a big thing. Two doctors surgeries around here, approved by parkrun and the NHS, are encouraging their patients to get involved to help people get some physical activity. So they’re actually

advocating parkrun, which is really is amazing. “We applaud everybody, from the first to the last person over the line. Everybody gets the same applause. Everyone stays around and just chats at the end and it’s that community atmosphere, that’s what a lot of people come for. Another good thing is that it’s 9am on a Saturday morning, so by 10am we’re out of the park and home. We’re all busy in our lives but because you haven’t got to base your life around it, it’s easy to fit in. It’s just an hour. “You feel good at the end. You’ve done 5km, you’ve met your friends and you’ve set yourself up for the day. “It’s free, it’s open to everybody, just give it a go!” Ok, ok, you’ve twisted my arm, John. See you all down there next Saturday at 9am. parkrun takes place in Hillsborough Park every Saturday morning at 9am.To give it a go, simply register on the website https://www.parkrun.org.uk/.

Continuing to grow VISION WINDOWS IS AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF THE GLAZING MARKET – BOSS ALLAN ENSOR’S YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND DRIVE FOR SUCCESS HELPS TO KEEP IT THERE. ollowing his instincts and investing in his own business has stood Allan Ensor in good stead over the last 20-plus years. It was back in 1998 that Allan decided to give up a steady career as a window fitter to go it alone, manufacturing PVC windows and doors. This was the original Vision Windows factory on Holme Lane in Hillsborough. “There was me and one employee and we had two windows on the order books, but soon I was employing more people and orders were up to 200 and then 300,” he recalls. “It all happened so quickly and in such a small area, we had 3,000 square feet of rented factory space and it was not enough.” To meet demand Allan and the team moved to their current base on Cuthbert Bank Road, and with 23 employees they now specialise mainly in aluminium doors, windows and bifold doors with PVC remaining as a smaller but still vital part of the business. If you want to know why aluminium has moved ahead of PVC in popularity Allan explains it in layman’s terms like this. “Aluminium has done a U-turn. From the old hard wood sub-frame it has now been modified so you have a thermal break in every profile. Therefore you don’t get an aluminium window wringing with water like the old-style patios did. “Aluminium is harder wearing, it’s

F

powder-coated and has a far greater life span than PVC.” Allan’s team manufacture a full range of aluminium products including windows, doors, bifold doors, patios, conservatories, sun rooms and roof lanterns. And while their products are delivered all over the country they are still a local company when it comes to fitting, with clients ranging from the domestic market to trade and large scale commercial projects. “We get a real mixed bag in here and it’s like a one-stop shop, we’re able to satisfy most people that walk through the door.” It’s a proper team effort at Vision Windows. Many of Allan’s staff came straight from school or college, were trained from scratch, and they tend to stick around for a long time. “We don’t have much staff turnover,” says Allan. “And quite a few of the team have been with me since the start of the journey 21 years ago. That must say something about us as a company. “We’ve had good year-on-year growth which has enabled us to invest in machinery, and we’ve invested in people too.” Among the most recent new recruits is Allan’s son Matthew, one of four apprentices who started at the same time. “He may be the heir to the company when I pack up, but he’s on the shop floor now, working his way up with the rest of them.”

As for the future, with full order books and ever-increasing demand, there are expansion plans in the pipeline with planning permission for a new factory on the car park which will be used for overspill and dispatch, leaving the main factory clear for manufacturing. Allan also recently brought in business consultants Fleure to help Vision Windows make the most use of their factory space. “I thought we’d have to move to a larger site and dreading it,” he says. “But Fleure helped us to use the space more efficiently. We have a lot more space than we thought. “When we started we were all PVC, now aluminium represents 70 per cent of our business. We were hoarding old machinery and dedicating too much space to the old methods. “Fleure have picked the factory up, Rubik-cubed it and dropped it back down with more floor lines dedicated to PVC. They’ve given us greater efficiency and now we don’t have to move.” In fact, Allan expects demands to continue to grow for the next ten years, so expect this successful Sheffield business to be at the heart of the community for a long time to come. Stylish? Naturally ADD NATURAL ELEMENTS TO YOUR URBAN ABODE. BY RACHEL MARTIN. tepping away from the tech-obsessed decor trends that we saw dominate 2018, this year we have moved towards fresh, natural materials such as bronze, copper and concrete. These elements will help bring an organic and serene ambience to any space while reflecting the world around your home. Get some ideas on how to add natural elements to your urban abode here.

S

Rose gold was one of 2018’s most seen decor trends, yet for 2019 we are seeing less gold and more copper accents, along with a mixture of other metals and finishes. With its red and orange tones and overall earthy hue, copper offers a muchneeded breath of fresh air. The copper Gorsley cluster chandelier light is handmade exclusively at Fritz Fryer. Designed and made by a local Artist Blacksmith the copper pendant is a direct result of inspiration from the arts and crafts movement. Fritz Fryer Copper Gorsley Pendant Light by Fritz Fryer Lighting £725 www.fritzfryer.co.uk 26 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

There’s nothing quite as luxurious as a velvet sofa: beautiful, soft, opulent and undeniably cool, it looks good any time of the year. Combining a curved silhouette with sumptuous mustard orange velvet-toned accents, this chair makes a statement addition to any room. With its scalloped edges, this chair features gold tapered legs and a high back to encase you as you relax. This bold statement chair will look great in a reading corner as well as by your dressing table. AUDENZA Scalloped Oyster Velvet Chair £375 www.audenza.com

This classic decorating trend has been around since the beginning of time, but for the upcoming year, jungle prints have been thoroughly refreshed and modernized. And you too will soon enough see leaf patterns in a new light. Printed with eco-friendly inks, this tropical wallpaper is easy to install on any wall type. Mind the Gap Palmeras Anthracite Wallpaper by Decoville £150 www.decoville.co.uk

HOME & GARDEN

Though muted colours can help you avoid making spaces feel overwhelming and visually heavy, this is a year where bolder hues are preferred. Richer tones throughout your home can make your more muted and natural-hued furnishings and decorative elements instantly pop and feel anew. Lookout for dramatic reds, statement pinks, bold yellows, and lush greens. The Newington sofa bed in moss green is a stylish yet functional design, transforming from a sophisticated sofa into a comfortable double bed in seconds. Newington Sofa in Green Velvet £1,800 from Habitat www.habitat.co.uk

We are saying goodbye to chrome and polished nickel, and welcome brass accents back into our homes. Brass is a surprisingly warm and subtle alternative to the expected steel accents and will be sure to add an everyday sense of elegance to even the simplest of spaces. Create a soft pool of light in the corner of the living area with the Tobias Floor Light in antique brass. Clean and contemporary in style, it can easily be moved into different positions when needed and looks great in the bedroom, too. Tobias Floor Light in Antique Brass £169 from Atkin and Thyme www.atkinandthyme.co.uk

Some may wonder why concrete has left the construction zone, yet it steps into many homes’ decor. Providing a crisp, clean look that’s easy to complement, concrete isn’t just for countertops. Stylish cement and metallic pots are the perfect home accessory to display your beloved house plants. Created from moulded cement, the round bowl planter has an internal waterproof sealant so is perfect for your herbs or succulents. The neutral tones of the cement combined with the bronze accent colour is perfect for getting on board with the luxe industrial look. Cement and Metallic Bronze Indoor Plant Pot £7.50 Lime Lace www.limelace.co.uk

Similar to tropical patterns and brass decor, incorporating geometric patterns is no new trend. Yet geometric patterns are expected to become a dramatic presence. This is a trend that will help make a bold statement in any room. A chic and easy way to incorporate this pattern into your home decor is by making your walls and floors pop. Tile Mountain’s new Swing range comprises a mix of geometric and stripe shapes. These eye-catching porcelain tiles are available in a choice of blue, beige, multi-colour, and night and day (monochrome with a hint of grey) colourways. Swing Decor Blue Stripe Wall & Floor Tile £28.99 from Tile Mountain www.tilemountain.co.uk www.rmcmedia.co.uk 27

Personal service IF YOU ARE THINKING OF MOVING IN 2020, THE FAMILY RUN TEAM AT HUNTERS, HILLSBOROUGH ARE ON HAND TO HELP.

hether you’re letting, buying or selling your home, it can be one of the biggest decisions you have to make in life, and it really is worth putting in the effort to make sure you get it right. The family run team at Hunters, Hillsborough are on hand to help; to ultimately make your move as swift and smooth as possible, and have been making great strides in the local market over the past three and a half years. Since first opening their doors in mid2016, the team has predominately remained unchanged; a common theme across Hunters’ sister branches at Crookes and Woodseats. It is this dedication to home-grown continuity, coupled with the constant improvements made nationally, that ensures Hunters’ can provide you – whatever your needs – with the very best customer experience in the property world. The Hunters offices at Crookes, Hillsborough and Woodseats are owned and operated by directors, Stuart and Stephen Goff; a name long-time local residents will remember well, following the establishment of GOFF, Sheffield in the 1960s, with the Hillsborough branch on Middlewood Road later opening in 1969. The intrepid duo could have returned to the original and market leading GOFF name, made famous during the sixties, seventies and eighties, but decided that working as an independent business under the Hunters umbrella would

W

provide clients with a market leading proposal, for anyone wishing to sell or let their property. “Being a family business on a national scale is something different to the local Sheffield market and we’re seeing time and time again that our hard work and advice is being recognised not only by our vendors, but also those who buy through us – which is great testament to the team and brand,” says Stephen. “S6 and the surrounding areas has continued to go from strength to strength; with excellent access to the city centre and nearby countryside, along with a whole host of local amenities and great tram links. Our Hillsborough office has seen a big increase this year; with sellers preparing themselves early for 2020, and a number already due to go live in the spring.” If you are thinking of moving in 2020, now could be the ideal time to book an appraisal; where either Stephen or Tom can walk you through the process and what may need to be done to your property to ensure you are market ready. Don’t delay and call the team on 0114 242 4260 to book your appointment or visit www.hunters.com to directly book into the diary. “Our hard work and advice is being recognised not only by our vendors, but also those who buy through us – which is great testament to the team and brand.”

ut don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what just one of their clients has to say about the Hunters approach:

B

“Excellent service from start to finish! Initially, I was offered a cheaper quote by another estate agent that wanted the fees up front, but from a personal point of view, l don’t think you get the same urgency to sell once they have money. l went with my gut feeling [Hunters] and I am so glad l did. I was very impressed by the lady that came out to value my property, she explained everything and was extremely professional and it was photographed and marketed very quickly. The property was unoccupied and as l didn’t live close by, Hunters took care of all the viewings. I found their online vendor website helpful; it gives you information on how the viewings went and details of arranged viewings. I can’t praise Nicole enough. She was very thorough and knowledgeable in all that she did – it was practically a one on one service. Nothing is too much trouble and she always calls back when she says she will, which is a rare thing in this day and age. I would have no hesitation in recommending Hunters to anyone wishing to sell their property.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 43

Winning formula AFTER FINDING CONVENTIONAL SLIMMING CLUBS DIDN’T WORK FOR HER, ANNE KAY TURNED TO MEDISCULPT WEIGHT LOSS THERAPY FROM G&M HEALTHCARE – AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ASTOUNDING. fter a lifetime of struggling and failing to control her weight, Anne Kay feared she would never shed the excess pounds that were the source of so much frustration. But after losing the best part of three stones in just under three months, she finally believes she is going to reach her ideal weight – and it’s all down to Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy from G&M Healthcare. When Anne met G&M’s senior clinical therapist Sarah O’Brien for a free informal consultation, she was convinced she was one of those people for whom diets just did not work. “I’m 60 and I’ve been dieting since I was 13. Conventional slimming clubs did not work for me. I’d lose weight at first but it would all come back on. When you’ve lost just three pounds in nine weeks you know it’s not working.” But all that changed when Anne agreed to try Medisculpt Weight Loss Therapy – the pounds simply fell away from the start. More importantly, the weight loss continued week after week. “I have never felt better in my life,” she says. “I feel full of energy and instead of sitting on the couch watching TV, I am out in the world, gardening and enjoying life. “I’ve never lost so much weight in such a short space of time and that’s where the motivation comes from, because you can see the results week by week.” Anne is on a controlled eating plan consisting of around 40 varieties of sachet foods alongside a list of unlimited vegetables and fruit. She combines the diet with two treatments: LPG (lipo-masage which reduces cellulite and sagging skin, giving a toned look) and BTL Vanquish ME (a non-surgical option for people with stubborn fat pockets). “The treatments reduce the chance of being left with loose skin following the weight loss, and they have worked brilliantly for me,” says Anne. “Everyone who knows me has noticed a massive difference. I even managed to lose half a stone when I went on ten-day holiday to Cornwall. Normally I’d have

A

BEFORE

been giving in to temptation and eating cream teas and pasties, but I resisted and ate salads instead.” Anne visits G&M Healthcare once a week for a weigh-in and a health check, and she feels certain the advice and encouragement she receives from the whole team, including her therapist Sarah and Dr Grace Hula, is a key element in her success. When Anne loses another couple of pounds she will reach a total weight loss of exactly three stones and from then on her diet will change, introducing more normal food in a controlled way and reducing the number of sachets. Her target is a total weight loss of four and a half stones and she is convinced that after a lifetime of failed diets she will achieve her goal. “Everyone is so supportive, I really can’t fault the treatment I get. I’d certainly recommend the Medisculpt diet and the team at G&M Healthcare. I’d urge anybody struggling with their weight to contact them for an initial consultation and change their life – because basically that is what it has done for me.”

WEDDINGS

Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... KATERINA VYURKOVA LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY. our wedding day will always be one of the most cherished events in your life, as the memories will continue warming your heart up each time you will flip through a photo album or look back at Facebook ‘Memories’ several years after you gave your vows. The preparation for the magical day can sometimes be extremely overwhelming. The entire process can take anything between two weeks and two years to complete, as each couple has different needs and wishes, ranging

Y

54 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

from wanting to throw an extravagant party to deciding on a simple exchange of rings at the local register office. The length of time needed will also depend on whether there will be any unforeseen circumstances, such as a trusted photographer cancelling the photoshoot out of nowhere, or the time available to get ready being extremely limited, which is usually the case in our busy world. While leaving as much time as possible for a stress-free preparation process is undoubtedly the preferred option, it is not always possible to start

thinking about what kind of font will be on your guests’ invitations 12 months in advance. Needless to say, some of the most essential items such as wedding dress and suit are rarely booked several days before the event. Taking into account that the attire is probably the very first thing a couple would think about the moment a conversation about the wedding begins, it probably plays a major role in setting the timeframe for preparation at three months to leave enough time to find the perfect outfits.

WEDDINGS

Three months before: Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 governmentapproved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the post-ceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.

Two months before: Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a

Two weeks before:

paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance.

‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end. When it comes to the wedding speeches, avoid scheduling a particular date and follow the flow of your emotions. Once you are ready to write the words of love down, don’t waste a minute to pour your heart onto the paper.

One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.

One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off. The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 55

Wedding rings: Where do I start? IT CAN BE TRICKY TO CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING RING AS THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS AVAILABLE; FROM PLATINUM TO SHEFFIELD STEEL AND PLAIN BANDS TO DIAMOND SPARKLERS. HERE ARE SOME OF OUR BEST HINTS AND TIPS FOR WEDDING RING SHOPPING. Give yourself enough time… When planning your wedding it can seem like there is an endless list of things to decide and your wedding rings may feel like just another item on that list, but it is worth giving them some thought early on as they are the one thing (apart from your spouse!) that you will keep forever. With so many different materials, sizes and styles to choose from wedding rings are normally made to order and although many are available more quickly, it is advised to allow up to eight weeks for this. To prevent unnecessary stress, we’d suggest giving yourself as much time as possible; you may want to start looking and trying rings on quite early in your planning as this will help you budget and allow you to think over your choice before committing.

Try lots of rings on… The easiest way to decide if you like a design is to try it on. Looking online can 56 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

give you ideas, but there is nothing quite so good as getting the ring on your finger. It often surprises people how quickly they can rule designs out once they start trying them, and those final decisions about the exact width or profile are much easier when you can directly compare them.

Consider what’s practical… Your wedding ring will probably be your most sentimental piece of jewellery and one you will wear forever. While it is important to choose a design you love, it is also a good idea to think about how practical it is. For instance, some metal options or designs can limit resizing or even rule it out altogether. This doesn’t bother everyone, but if you do want the ring you get married in to last forever then discussing this (admittedly unromantic) aspect now can prevent future heartache.

Ask lots of questions… As jewellers we talk to lots of couples who are in exactly your position and are well-placed to offer both practical information and style advice based on our years (sometimes decades!) of experience. You may be unsure what metal will best suit your lifestyle or whether your engagement ring would look best with a bespoke fitted band. Our job is to answer your questions and help you find your perfect ring so don’t feel afraid to ask as many as you need to so you can be confident in your choice. Kirsty joins crusade to save Cupola Renowned broadcaster Kirsty Wark (pictured right) is backing a campaign to save a Sheffield art gallery. The 64-year-old journalist, presenter and writer is perhaps best known for fronting BBC2’s Newsnight programme. But the Scot also has a keen interest in the arts, working on several cultural shows including the Beeb’s annual coverage of the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. When she heard about the plight of independent gallery, Cupola Contemporary Art, through its ‘CPR, Cupola Preserve & Rescue’ campaign, Kirsty generously pledged both money and support. “The more places showing and championing art, the better it is for the soul,” she stated. The gallery, on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, has been an outlet for local, national and international artists to showcase and talk about their work for the past 28 years and has become a mainstay of the community. Now it is in need of help as structural problems mean that an eye-watering £40,000 needs to be raised urgently. Founder and director, Karen Sherwood, believes that efforts so far have taken them to base camp, but with a mountain still to climb she is appealing for aid. “We’ve launched a Crowdfunding campaign and a JustGiving page and are hoping that people will follow Kirsty’s example,” she said. “We’re also hoping to launch a Patreon page and are organising a secret postcard show among other things. There are going to be lots of different and hopefully fun, exciting and engaging ways for people to get involved with our CPR campaign and help raise the total needed. And we’re open to ideas, particularly if it sees money being raised in a fun and creative way.” For details of how to get involved or find out more about the campaign, visit: http://www.cupolagallery.com and click on CPR. 62 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

And at her family’s small holding, Eleanor has just been helping out with the latest arrival – a litter of piglets. “I’m really enjoying rehearsals for Shrek and love working with the people in STOS,” she said. Visitors to Wentworth Woodhouse stately home were stunned when aristocratic folk in their Regency finery swept past them in the corridors. It wasn’t ghostly goings-on, or the filming of another movie blockbuster... Staff and volunteers had stepped back in time to prepare for an Evening of Regency Elegance, the glamorous Georgian dinner and dance which will transport the ornate state rooms back to their heyday on Saturday 19 October. Specialist costumiers had called in with an array of Pride and Prejudicestyle outfits – Empire-line dresses, gentlemen’s breeches and tailcoats. Wentworth Preservation Trust’s housekeepers, facilities management team, tour guides and volunteers had a ball, dressing up like characters in Sanditon, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Poldark. Tickets for the Night of Regency Elegance are £75, including dinner (ten per cent discount for eight tickets or more). Guests are encouraged to wear period dress or black-tie. HALLOWEEN

Ghouls and ghosts SCARE YOURSELF SILLY WITH THESE SPOOKY STORIES THAT ARE A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO HOME. here is plenty of haunting history surrounding the city of Sheffield and that brings with it some ethereal secrets. From public houses to former hospitals and highways, nowhere seems to be safe from paranormal activity. With Halloween almost upon us, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite tales of Sixer supernaturalism that will send a chill down the spine of even the most unflappable sceptic.

Stocksbridge Bypass During the construction of Stocksbridge Bypass, many of the workers opted to sleep on site and repeatedly reported hearing the sound of children laughing in the dead of night but were unable to locate the source of the noise. Soon, a group of children began appearing, seemingly out of thin air, and were witnessed dancing in a circle around a nearby pylon; vanishing upon realising they were being watched. Police officers were assigned to investigate the bizarre happenings and were soon overcome by “a feeling of fear”, reporting a shadowy figure standing in front of their car. The figure quickly vanished and the officers continued on the bypass, but when pulling over once more, they were hit by

“what felt like a speeding vehicle”. This occurred twice [or more] over the course of the overnight stakeout, with the officers failing to find an arterial explanation – and no visible damage to the vehicle. Since then, hundreds of motorists have reported encountering hooded monk-like figures crossing the bypass, crowning it one of the most haunted stretches of road in the world.

Middlewood Hospital, until it finally closed in 1996. As you can imagine, the property has a few skeletons in its closet. There have been reports of everything from strange noises, knocks and bangs to feelings of being watched and followed. People have even claimed to see a full apparition of a woman with no face walking around the site.

Middlewood Hospital

The Strines Inn

In August 1872, the then South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum was declared open for the reception of patients; the first to be transferred from nearby Wakefield Asylum. The hospital later became known as the West Riding Asylum (1890-1930), aside from a couple of years from 1915 onwards when it was evacuated by the military to be used as Wharncliffe War Hospital. From 1930, it became Wadsley Mental Hospital and remained so until 1939, when patients were again evacuated so that it could be used as a war hospital. Post-war developments saw the hospital integrated into the National Health Service and renamed

The Strines Inn is a Grade II listed building with roots dating back to the 13th century, when the Worrall family built a manor house on site [1275], though it was later rebuilt around 1560. The Inn is situated on the Mortimer Road, which was a Turnpike Road between Grindleford and Penistone, built by Hans Winthrop Mortimer (17341807) Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury. Finances were secured for the road in 1768, leading John Morton to buy the Worrall family home and open it as an inn around 1771, which it has remained since. But it’s not your typical watering hole – there’s a ghost that wanders about the place, too. It is said that the bar is haunted by a grey lady who joins loyal patrons for a pint to this day.

CHRISTMAS

Festive preparation IF YOU FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL... OR SO THE SAYING GOES. CHRISTMAS COULDN’T BE A BETTER TIME TO MAKE SURE YOU’VE GOT ALL YOUR DUCKS (OR TURKEYS) IN A ROW. ’m sorry but we need to talk about the C word. I know you’ve not even sorted the kids’ Halloween costumes yet, and the baubles are still happily sat in the loft gathering dust, but as much as we’d like to pretend it isn’t, Christmas is fast approaching. ‘Tis the season of wining and dining with family and friends, attending Christmas parties and eating copious amounts of mince pies. With countless events to plan for, and gifts to buy, how can preparation remove the stress that so often comes hand in hand with the festivities?

I

Hair and Beauty With so many events – planned and unplanned – approaching, you’ll want to spruce up your appearance to keep you looking your best throughout the season. It’s a well-known fact that beauticians

and hairdressers’ diaries are difficult to get into at this time of year. Plan ahead and ensure your appointments are booked to avoid disappointment. Better still, opt for treatments that are longlasting so you don’t have to spend your days sat in a beautician’s chair. Semipermanent eyelashes are a fantastic option to glam your look – without having to apply fiddly falsies every evening.

Eating Out If spending Christmas morning slaving away over a turkey sounds like your idea of hell, consider letting someone else do the work for you by opting to eat out. Aunty Betty wants goose but the mother-in-law prefers to go traditional with turkey? Our local businesses have you covered with a wide range of meals on offer. Book now to secure your place on Christmas Day.

Christmas Party Venues Have you planned your work Christmas party yet? If you’ve been struggling to find a venue appropriate for the occasion, there’s plenty of options still available right here in North Sheffield, and with plenty of packages to choose from, all you’ll need to do is sip the champagne, enjoy the delicious food and get ready to dance the night away.

The Perfect Party Dress Christmas is a time when it becomes socially accepted to wear as much festive sparkle as the naked eye can take. But whether you intend to use the festivities as an excuse to dress like a disco ball, or if you’d prefer to stick to your signature style, S6’s independent boutiques have you covered. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 71

EATING OUT

Historic hidden gem ONE OF THE CITY’S LARGEST DINING ESTABLISHMENTS, TAPTON HALL HAS MENUS TO SUIT ALL OCCASIONS, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. apton Hall’s distinguished history dates back to the 18th century and has seen significant players on the world’s stage from Mary Shore – grandmother of Florence Nightingale – to steel magnate Edward Vickers to snuff entrepreneur George Wilson calling it home. These days this iconic Sheffield building in the heart of the leafy suburbs, with its original grand design strikingly contrasting with a modern 1960s architect-designed extension, is familiar to all as a venue for events and celebrations of all kinds, from small family get-togethers to large-scale parties and weddings. In fact, it’s one of the city’s largest dining establishments with menus to match every occasion – a fact worth bearing in mind as we say goodbye to summer and begin the long build up to the festive party season. Whatever the occasion, once you’ve stepped through the grand entrance you become a part of Tapton Hall’s splendid history, with its sweeping staircases and substantial, high-ceilinged rooms. But the food on offer is anything but a

T

museum piece. My companion and I sampled a cross-section of dishes from three set menus – the formal lunch (£20 for two courses, £23 for three); the table d’Hote (£29 for three courses) and the Nightingale (£39.95 for three courses). For starters chicken Caesar salad with parmesan tuille and crispy anchovies was a simple enough dish but the chicken breast was so moist and tasty, contrasting with the savoury anchovies, it was the perfect start to any occasion. The same could be said for the three cheese croquette with chilli jam and pea shoots. In fact this was a real winner, with the melting and super sharp cheese within a crisp coating proving to be a perfect match for the not-too-sweet jam. Mains kept the standards high. A seared duck breast, served with just the slightest suggestion of pink in the middle, came with a splendid combination of mini fondants, creamed cabbage and bacon and a port and black cherry sauce. Across the table things were getting a little spicy as a seared mackerel fillet, with perfectly crispy skin, came on a bed of curried cauliflower with sautéed

greens and a homemade bhaji. Not too hot but full of flavour, the different components of the dish came together perfectly. For desserts a plum crumble tart was deconstructed to create a truly elegant sight, with two halves of perfectly poached plum topped with an irresistible crumbly sweet topping, served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Our second sweet offering, Black Forest trifle with Chantilly cream, kirsch and thick shards of chocolate kept standards high. Whatever the occasion, Tapton Hall has the setting and the menus to make sure a great time is had by all. Just add good company and a couple of glasses of something and you can’t go wrong. Getting ready for Christmas THE WORTLEY ARMS HAS PLENTY OF TEMPTING TREATS FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON. here’s nothing like a cosy traditional pub to spread good cheer, not just at Christmas time but throughout the long dark nights of winter. The Wortley Arms certainly fits the bill. ANNIVERSARY

Fourth Section Finals in London, 1981

Golden anniversary STANNINGTON BRASS BAND CELEBRATES 50 FABULOUS YEARS. tannington Brass Band dates back to the early 19th century and England’s Industrial Revolution as an outgrowth of the medieval waits. With increasing urbanisation, employers began to finance work bands to decrease the political activity with which the working classes seemed preoccupied during their leisure time. Thus, the brass band tradition was founded. For over five decades, Stannington Brass Band has been part of the fabric of community life and continues to evoke warm memories for many people across the region. Though the origins of the band go back as far as the 1880s, this year, they are celebrating 50 years since the band reformed in 1969 and will be hosting a special anniversary concert at Lomas Hall on 12 October. Here, Lorraine Dyson tells Sixer the story of the band’s history and highlights over the past half century.

S

78 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

There is so much to be proud of and celebrate in the 50 years since the band reformed. As in life, there have been highs and lows, moments of exhilaration and disappointment. We will all remember the sheer joy (and a little trepidation) of our promotion to the Yorkshire Championship Section in 2008 – the highest accolade in the band’s history. Not to mention competing against some of the highestranking bands in the world for two years, which certainly put us on our mettle and provided us with so many memories that we can share with our grandchildren. “There were more celebrations in 2016, when the band pulled off an incredible double in the same year by scooping both ‘Second Section Yorkshire Area’ and ‘National Championship’ firsts and a promotion

back to the First Section. Still on a high from their success at the National Brass Band Championships, the band continued their winning form by being awarded first prize in the Second Section at the Bolsover Festival of Brass, where Richard Dowling was rewarded with the best Soloist’s prize. They topped off their most successful contesting year with win number five at the YHBBA Annual Contest in Holmfirth, where they were judged best Second Section band. “Back in 2010, the band achieved county-wide fame by taking part in the BBC’s “A Symphony for Yorkshire”, which resulted in a trip to Leeds for the sound recording with composer Benjamin Till and two exciting location shoots in Sheffield. “We can’t talk about the highlights of the band without mentioning one person in particular who has played an

We are delighted that Derek continues to drive the band to bigger and better things, always setting new goals whilst maintaining a happy and stable team of players. “We are so proud of our thriving Training Band, which has gone from strength to strength under the baton of Tim Parris. With over 40 players regularly attending rehearsals and performances, we are pleased to be nurturing bandsmen and women of the future and several players have progressed to our senior band and other contesting bands in the area. “To better tell the story of the band’s 50-year history, we have put together a display of photos, scrapbooks and personal accounts from some of our explayers and were delighted when some of our most accomplished players agreed to send contributions. Tom Hutchinson, Principal Cornet with Cory, the world’s highest-ranking brass band, reflected on his time with Stannington, stating that: “It’s fair to say that without Stannington Band, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. I’m so thankful to every single player, conductor, member and supporter of this great band, for encouraging and supporting a young boy chasing his dreams.” “We hope you will share in our

celebrations and visit our display on Saturday 12 October from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Knowle Top Chapel, Stannington, followed by our muchanticipated concert at 7.30pm in Lomas Hall, where you will hear pieces which pay tribute some of our more memorable moments, as well as acknowledging a diverse range of music through the decades. “We have been lucky over the years to have had loyal following who regularly support our local concerts, as well as those further afield, which has meant

that we continue to thrive without major sponsorship. We look forward to the challenges and happy times ahead and hope you enjoy celebrating the past 50 years just as much as we have.”

DO YOU REMEMBER?

Back to school THE BEST THE DAYS OF YOUR LIVES... TEACHER OR PUPIL, DO YOU RECOGNISE THESE OLD CLASS PHOTOGRAPHS? e’re going back to school for this month’s trek down memory lane with a couple of local line-ups of pupils and teachers. Any familiar faces? As for last month’s photos, which were supplied by Barry Couldwell, they were identified by reader Jane Johnson who told us: “All three pictures are taken in Worrall, though two are much older than I could remember! “They are Penistone and Bowler’s shop at the top of Towngate Road and the four cottages on Long Lane. Walking past the cottages as a child I remember that there was sometimes a most awful smell. You can still make out where they were. “The third picture taken from by the school gate is later, it’s the new school gate that can be seen. The houses are ones I

looked out to as I sat in class in J3 and J4. Here they seem to be in the process of being demolished.” It’s always a treat to hear how we have tweaked the memories of Sixer reader. Now let’s see how you get on this month.

HEROES

Health heroes SHEFFIELD’S WESTFIELD HEALTH HAS BEEN HELPING PEOPLE STAY HEALTHY AND ACCESS QUALITY CARE FOR 100 YEARS. WE LOOK BACK AT A CENTURY OF SERVICE AND SPEAK TO CEO DAVE CAPPER. e’re used to NHS shortages and challenges hitting the headlines today, but struggling to provide healthcare for a growing population is a challenge that pre-dates the National Health Service. Rewind to the early 1900s and the city of Sheffield’s hospitals were in crisis. Maintaining the four hospitals – The Royal, The Royal Infirmary, The Children’s and Jessop Hospital for Women – in the aftermath of the First World War was proving challenging. From bed shortages to a lack of funds for modernising wards and equipment, it was clear Sheffield needed to take drastic measures to save its hospitals and safeguard the population’s health. That’s where Fred Osborn came in. A member of what was then the Sheffield Consultative and Advisory Hospitals Council, which would later become Westfield Health, his idea for turning round Sheffield’s hospitals was the ‘penny in the pound’ scheme. Launched in 1921, for every pound of an employee’s pay, a penny would be given to the hospitals. In return, contributors received free hospital treatment. The bold idea was an immediate success and went on to become one of the largest and most successful schemes in the country: over its 27 years, it raised nearly £5million for the four hospitals and guaranteed quality care to Sheffield residents, whatever their income. But war was on the horizon again, and Sheffield found itself under fire. On 12, 13 and 15 December 1940, nearly 450 bombs, landmines and incendiaries were dropped on the city during the Sheffield Blitz, putting its hospitals under incredible strain. The penny in the pound scheme adapted, creating an ambulance service that carried more than 300,000 patients to hospital, as well as funding a new maternity unit at Jessop’s hospital after it was damaged in the raids. In the aftermath of the war and with the creation of the NHS in 1948, the penny in the pound scheme faced questions over its future, with many

similar schemes across the country closing their doors. It was time for the next chapter. A ‘Special Purposes Fund’ for patients and hospital staff provided amenities that weren’t covered by the NHS, alongside recovery-focused benefits for contributing members that helped them recuperate from illness. When the struggling NHS reintroduced fees for items such as prescriptions, dental services and glasses, Westfield Health adapted again, creating the Health Cash Plan to help people with everyday health costs. Though Westfield Health was adapting to the changing healthcare landscape, its purpose remained constant: to help

Sheffield residents stay healthy and access quality care. In the sixties, Westfield Health’s charitable arm, the Sheffield and District Hospital’s Services Charitable Fund, was established. Since 1965, it’s donated £15million to charity, including £500,000 this year to The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, Weston Park Hospital, St Luke’s Hospice, Ashgate Hospice, Paces and Cavendish Cancer Care to mark the organisation’s centenary. Looking at how people’s needs and the healthcare landscape have changed over the past century, Westfield Health is focusing on the next 100 years under the direction of new CEO, Dave Capper. It’s an organisation with ambitious plans. Focusing on preventative care, they’re partnering with cutting-edge firms such as EXOS, a US human performance company, to launch products that make a healthy difference to businesses, their employees and Westfield Health customers alike. Drawing on its Sheffield roots, Westfield Health has also partnered with the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) at Sheffield Hallam University to academically evaluate their health and wellbeing solutions. As well as helping other companies take care of their staff, there’s also a focus on the Westfield Health team, many of whom have been with the business for a significant part of its history: over 20 per cent of the team have been at Westfield for over 15 years. Head to the rooftop of the new, purpose-built office in the centre of town and you’ll find yoga sessions or exercise classes in progress, as well as a brand-new gym facility in development on the ground floor. This focus on culture and its people led to Westfield Health being awarded Investors in People Gold award in June and the appointment of a new Chief People Officer in July. A part of this city’s history for over 100 years, by investing in its team and continuing to evolve and innovate new products that help people stay healthy, Westfield Health plans to play a significant role in keeping the nation healthy for the next 100 years. When did you join Westfield Health? Westfield Health has been a major part of my career. Like most people from Sheffield, I grew up hearing the Westfield name, so, when an opportunity came up to join the company initially as a Management Trainee back in 2004, I jumped at the chance. What had you been doing previously? From insurance firms to the translation industry, I’ve been in a variety of different sectors. In some ways my career has come full circle: I started out as a professional footballer at Sheffield United before retiring early due to injury. Becoming CEO of a health and wellbeing company has been a brilliant opportunity to marry my personal interests and professional experience. What are your core responsibilities? If Westfield Health were a sports team, I’d be the coach. I’m responsible for looking at the bigger picture, strategising how we can best work together to get into the next league and making sure each and every team member has the training and support they need to contribute to that journey. My role is all about creating the right environment and conditions for success. Celebrating our centenary was a real milestone and an important reminder to me — together with the team, it’s my responsibility to figure out how we make sure Westfield not only survives, but grows and thrives to create a legacy that will last the next 100 years. What has been Westfield Health’s biggest success? When you’re looking after and guiding an institution that’s been around for so many years, getting the balance right between keeping the magic that’s made it a success but still moving with the times can be hard. Westfield Health’s biggest success has been managing to take such a wellestablished business and successfully diversify. Being able to expand what we do without losing what makes us Westfield Health is definitely our biggest success. How do you improve on a legacy that covers 100 years? Part of what’s helped us succeed has been our ability to adapt. That openness to trying new things and creating new, marketdefining products is part of our DNA — that hasn’t and won’t change. We’re now building on that attitude and setting our vision for the next 100 years. Following our diversification from insurance to wellbeing, we’ll be building on that foundation to make sure Westfield Health becomes the go-to provider for corporate health and wellbeing nationally.

Westfield Health CEO Dave Capper

With pension ages increasing – and likely to increase further – how important is health and wellbeing in the workplace? Even with the current pension age, we can see the impact that ignoring health and wellbeing has on the workforce: UK businesses lose £77.5billion every single year due to low productivity and sick days. We can’t afford it — especially in the north: research by the Northern Health Science Alliance found that there’s a staggering £4 gap in productivity per-person per-hour in the North compared to the rest of England — £1.20 of which is attributable to poor health. For us to remain competitive on a regional and national level, it’s essential we put health and wellbeing top of the agenda right now — we can’t afford to wait. Already, there are more than ten million people over the age of 50 in employment; as pension ages increase and we all work longer, this will become even more crucial. Are practices (eg, yoga sessions, exercise classes) applicable to small companies as much as the larger ones? Often smaller companies see health and wellbeing as a ‘nice to have’, something that big companies can afford, but would be too much of an investment for them. Actually, it’s small businesses that disproportionately feel the impact of poor productivity or days lost to ill health. It’s small businesses that need to take care of and invest in their people the most. Wellbeing pays. In many cases, initiatives even pay for themselves: research by Deloitte found that the average ROI of workplace mental health intervention is £4.20 for every £1 spent. Whatever their size, companies that choose to prioritise today’s bottom line over tomorrow’s workforce aren’t setting themselves up for long-term growth and success. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 85
