DO YOU REMEMBER?
ere’s a slice of life from the notso-distant past. Those big chunky cars and billboard adverts for Stones’ beer, at one time synonymous with Sheffield, might tug at a few heartstrings. Many thanks to our old friend Barry Couldwell for providing the photograph. Can anyone tell us where it is and when it was taken? Last month’s image conjured up a perfect picture of a summer’s sporting afternoon as it showed a cricket match at Little Matlock Cricket Club in the 1950s. Loxley village can be seen in the distance across the valley.

Trust in experience WHEN PUTTING YOUR HOUSE ON THE MARKET, YOU NEED AN ESTATE AGENT WHO PUTS YOUR NEEDS FIRST. unters Estate Agents launched in 1992 on the firm principles of excellent customer service, unrivalled pro-activity and achieving the best possible results. They don’t just sell a house, they know how to sell a home. The Hunters offices at Crookes, Hillsborough and Woodseats are owned and operated by Stuart Goff. Goffs is an established Sheffield estate agent long-time local residents will remember well, and was launched in the 1960s, with the Hillsborough branch on Middlewood Road opening in 1969. In more recent years, the Hillsborough and many other Sheffield branches have become part of the Hunters franchise, which means you’ll find a team of local experts, being part of a national network of over 200 offices. What’s more, their letting department has doubled in size, and is now run by eight fulltime members of staff. This has developed thanks to Goffs’ long-standing relationship with another well-respected local business, Norrow Estates. Stuart’s son, Stephen Goff, now oversees the sales in their branches. Stephen is a chartered surveyor and registered valuer, who is dedicated to delivering excellent customer service. Often based at Hillsborough, this is one of the first Hunters branches nationally whose team have undergone training for a Hunters Training Academy Diploma, gaining branch accreditation. Currently, no qualifications are needed to become an estate agent, but driven by the desire to be the best estate agents in the UK

with a customer-focused approach, Hunters decided to set up the Hunters Training Academy. Based in York, the qualification is Property Mark endorsed, consists of 13 online tests and covers all aspects of property and sales to maintain professional standards and ethics. “We are firm believers that excellent people achieve excellent results,” says Stephen. “The training academy has been designed to give our team the knowledge and skills to improve the client experience. It’s been a huge success with the Hillsborough team, and we look forward to rolling the scheme out to our other Sheffield Hunters branches.” Genevieve Chapman, Serena White and Nicole Lloyd from the Hillsborough branch have all recently completed their training and look forward to providing a service that is head and shoulders above the rest. Hunters’ national survey results already show a customer service satisfaction rating of 96 per cent, which is significantly above the national average and is a score every branch is striving to boost. So if you’re looking for an estate agent with the expertise and service to sell or rent your property, drop into the Hillsborough branch, or your nearest Hunters Estate Agents to see how they can help you. THE ULTIMATE
CHECKLIST WITH SO MANY ASPECTS TO THINK ABOUT, PLANNING A WEDDING CAN BE ONE OF OUR MOST STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS – BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE. RHIANA HUGHES TALKS YOU THROUGH THE SEVEN MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF YOUR BIG DAY AND HOW TO TACKLE THEM.
WEDDINGS
Venue While it used to be that churches were the only venues considered when it came to planning a wedding, this has completely changed today. You might want to stick to tradition and walk down the aisle at a beautiful chapel. But if that’s not for you there are a wealth of other venues and locations where you can tie the knot. If you are brave enough to trust the British weather, consider an outdoor wedding incorporating natural colours and decoration into your big day. For those who don’t want to leave the success of their wedding up to Mother Nature, look into more modern venues with an industrial feel. Use copper and warm neutral tones for a gritty, earthy feel, and lighten up the space with fairy lights and light floral arrangements.
Cake
Pampering
When choosing the cake for your big day you might feel overwhelmed by the number of flavours, sizes and designs on offer. If you’re having a small wedding, save yourself some money and opt for a one or two-tier cake with more of a personalised style, and if your wedding is going to be on the larger side, consider a bigger cake with more of a simple design. Simple doesn’t mean boring, and there are countless bakeries that will offer beautiful cakes that can fit in with the theme of your wedding. You don’t have to stick to tradition and go for the common fruit cake either, if your favourite flavour is chocolate or funfetti – go for it. Dessert tables are proving more and more popular too, so if you don’t feel like splashing out on a big cake, pick some of your favourite sweet treats and let your guests pick at them throughout the night.
Brides, the natural look is in. Though your make up does need to last all day and photograph well, there are ways to have this done without looking completely unlike yourself, so be mindful when picking a makeup artist. How you wear your hair for your wedding is as important as the dress. The bridal up do is slowly becoming a thing of the past, so why not consider a vamped up version of your everyday look. Grooms, while you might be planning on just getting up and going on your big day, there are things you can do to get yourself feeling confident on what is your special day. Depending on how fast your hair grows, get yourself a haircut a week or two before the wedding so it’s not looking too overdone on the day. Take care of any facial hair that could look messy; you don’t want to look back at photos and wish you’d had a shave. Also, there’s one thing you really should consider that might not have crossed your mind – get yourself a manicure. Your day is going to consist of a lot of hand shaking, and you probably don’t want to be reaching out to guests with long nails or dry palms.
Catering The traditional three course sit down meal is still popular, but this can make it harder to please all of your guests, especially with all the varying dietary requirements you’ll find within a friendship group these days, and even more so if you’ve invited any fussy little ones. Instead of worrying about creating three or four separate menus, why not find a caterer who can create an assortment of small and sharing plates? Or if you’re having an outdoor wedding, look into having a food van or two. Lots of restaurants are starting their own catering companies, so if you’re keeping your wedding local you may well be able to get your favourite dinner spot to come down and feed yourself and guests.
Flowers A bigger decision than it may first seem, choosing the flowers for your big day is an important and sometimes tricky part of wedding planning. You might have a favourite flower but will it fit in with the theme and colour scheme of your wedding? Many brides are opting for a more freeform bouquet rather than the tightly wired bunch; choosing to hold flowers that look like they might have just been plucked from a nearby garden while still looking elegant and cleverly put together. When it comes to picking floral arrangements for the venue, think about hanging plants or table wreaths. These will still be eye-catching while allowing your guests to chat across the table without having to duck and dive behind an overbearing centrepiece.
What to wear Guest List You’d be amazed at how stressful putting together a guest list for your wedding can be. You and your partner may not agree on who the other wishes to invite, and even if you do, the number of guests you end up with could mean the costs of your wedding have skyrocketed. While you might be scared of hurting people’s feelings by not inviting them to your nuptials, remember that the day is about you. If you don’t want to invite that second cousin you met once at another cousins wedding, then don’t. Inviting only your nearest and dearest cuts costs and makes your day feel more special and focuses on your union, rather than spending your day playing catch up with 40 distant relatives. @SixerRMC
Black tie is making a comeback, so grooms get your tux ready. If you’re not a fan of black or you’re planning a summer wedding and can’t face the heat in a threepiece, there are plenty of stores that can create the ideal suit to compliment the theme and your own personal style. The main attraction of the day has always been the dress, and while you might feel that there’s a lot of pressure to look perfect on your big day, the most important thing is that you feel good in the gown you’ve chosen. On trend at the moment are dresses that are relaxed and comfortable with a slightly bohemian feel, featuring elegant and intricate patterns. It’s not all about white anymore either, with brides opting for pastels or dresses featuring muted splashes of colour. Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk 19

Why we seal our weddings with a ring ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, EXAMINES THE TRADITION AND LASTING APPEAL OF WEDDING RINGS. he exchanging of rings is an integral part of the wedding ceremony and one of the most important parts of the big day, but where does this tradition come from and why do we wear them? The first evidence dates back at least 5,000 years to Ancient Egypt, where the rings were made from braided reeds, the complete circle representing eternity. The rings quickly degraded so reeds were soon replaced by more durable materials such as leather and bone. In the Roman Empire, iron was a common choice although wealthier people used gold; the ring was an important part of the marriage contract between families. It was worn on the fourth finger of the bride’s left hand, still the traditional ring finger, because it was believed that a vein known as the ‘Vena Amoris’ ran directly from this finger to the heart. Although disproved by science, this romantic notion is still often cited as a reason for wearing the wedding ring in this position. The tradition became absorbed into the Christian marriage ceremony during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries more precious metals were used and designs increased in complexity with valuable materials acting as a demonstration of wealth. Gemstones were added to the designs, special messages engraved and detailed scrollwork and patterns carved into the bands. Only in the twentieth century did it become commonplace for men to wear wedding rings. During World War II, soldiers who were away fighting overseas chose to wear a ring as a comforting reminder of their loving families back home. Subsequently, jewellery for men became more fashionable and it is now so expected that when Prince William chose
T
not to have a wedding ring, it made the news! Wartime economising was also one of the reasons why plain bands became popular. Additionally, more simple designs enabled people to wear their ring all the time, and as women were increasingly receiving engagement rings, the wedding ring did not need to be so ornate. The yellow gold D-shape band became the default choice for most of the twentieth century. Nowadays, the range of options available for wedding rings is enormous and many people are personalising their choice. Precious metals such as gold and platinum are still most common, but alternatives like titanium are increasingly popular. A huge array of patterns and finishes are available, with or without diamonds or other gemstones. Many brides are choosing to match their engagement ring with a wedding band handmade to fit or a design that echoes the shape, profile and style of the existing ring. We have certainly come a long way since the braided reeds of the Ancient Egyptians, but the meaning remains very much the same. It’s all about you WITH THE AVERAGE AGE AT WHICH COUPLES MARRY GETTING HIGHER, WE LOOK AT ‘OLDER’ BRIDES AND THINGS THEY NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING THEIR BIG DAY. BY RHIANA HUGHES. hile the overall number of marriages in the UK has been steadily declining over recent years, the number of marriages at older ages is increasing, as is the age at which men and women are choosing to settle down. Research has shown that the average age for men to marry today is 37.5, while women are marrying slightly younger at 35.1. But does the age at which you decide to get married change your big day?
W
What really is an ‘older bride’?
Not too long ago, you’d have been considered an older bride if you were walking down the aisle at any age over 23. And if you were over 30, forget it… you were well and truly on the shelf. While this isn’t the case anymore, what many consider to be an older bride really isn’t very old at all. Though the average age for women to marry is 35, you might find that you’re considered an older or ‘mature’ bride as soon as you’re past the age of 27. Whether you’re 27 or 77 though, you can still have your wedding on your terms, no matter why you’re choosing to marry a bit later on. Why get married later in life?
There are plenty of reasons as to why the age at which women are marrying is increasing, and no two situations are identical. Whether you’ve chosen to wait until you’re financially secure, whether you were widowed, or whether it’s simply your second (maybe even third or fourth) marriage, your wedding day will still be one of the most special days of your life. The cost of weddings is at an all-time high, so couples are giving themselves more time to save up for their big day, and with less pressure coming from families to get married, marriage is now the informed choice of couples who want to demonstrate their commitment to one another. Research actually suggests that those who marry earlier in life may face greater challenges, as they could struggle with the
responsibilities of starting a family at a relatively early age and it could be harder for them to reach any educational or career goals that they’ve set for themselves. Getting married later in life means that the chances of you having already achieved these goals is much higher. Not your first time down the aisle?
Whether it’s your first, second, third or even eighth marriage, your wedding day will still be just as important to you, and who says you’ve even got to walk down the aisle this time? There is no rule book that says you have to stick to tradition, and getting remarried might actually give you an excuse to have a wedding that caters more to your personality, rather than hosting a wedding that’s more about your guests than yourself. Planning a wedding if it’s not your first time round could seem quite daunting; will your guests be as enthusiastic? Can you still register for gifts? How big should your bridal party be? Are you going to invite ex-partners? What should you wear? Where should you have the ceremony? These are all questions that will come up, if not in your own head, likely asked by other people. There is no reason though, that you can’t still enjoy the process of planning your nuptials. Try not to worry about what others will think of your big day, as it’s a day that above all else, should be enjoyed by you and your husband-to-be. If you can’t decide whether or not to invite an ex-partner, think about whether or not you’ll be comfortable with them there. If you feel uncomfortable registering for gifts, why not set up a wishing well so people can choose to contribute towards your honeymoon? Really, there shouldn’t be any problem that can’t be solved by thinking ‘what will make myself and my partner happy?’ There are still a few things to consider when getting remarried though. When planning the event with your partner, be careful to avoid saying things like ‘I did that last time’ or ‘when @SixerRMC
I married…’ as you don’t want your partner to feel that your day is being compared to your last wedding. This is especially true when it comes to your vows. If you’re choosing to write your own vows, steer clear of talking about how you used to feel before you met your significant other, instead focus on how they make you feel now. Not only will this highlight the fact that you’re still feeling this way, but it’ll avoid any awkwardness if you did choose to invite your ex! Going to the chapel?
It can take a while to find the perfect place to hold your wedding celebrations, so before you embark on the mammoth task of sifting through magazines and endless webpages, make sure you have an idea of what you want from a venue. If it’s a religious ceremony you were hoping for, make sure you check that this is an option for you, especially if it’s not your first marriage as some churches won’t perform religious ceremonies if you’ve been through a divorce. If it is the case that you can’t have a church wedding, consider getting married at your local registry office before heading to your church for a blessing instead. It doesn’t have to be a white wedding…
…but it can be if you want it to be. Don’t think that because you’re not as young as you once were that you can’t wear white on your wedding day. Many young and first-time brides are wearing colour, so there’s no reason you can’t go for a classic look. Getting married as an ‘older bride’ gives you more freedom when it comes to picking your outfit as there will likely be less of a preconceived idea of what you should wear coming from your guests. What’s important is that you feel comfortable and go for something that suits you and your individual style, be it a white gown, a blush mini dress or a champagne jumpsuit, you know best what looks good on you, so don’t let others influence your decision. PROMOTION
COME AND MEET THE DAVALLY TEAM AT THEIR OPEN DAY ON SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER. EVERYONE WELCOME AT THEIR SHOWROOM AT RAWSON SPRING ROAD, JUST TWO MINUTUES WALK FROM THE SWFC GROUND.
Be inspired for next summer AUTUMN AND WINTER IS A GREAT TIME TO PLAN YOUR GARDEN, PATIO OR DRIVEWAY FOR NEXT SUMMER. his summer has seen some record temperatures, with many of us enjoying the fine weather and spending more time in our gardens. One of Sheffield’s leading landscape gardeners is delighted that more people have realised the benefits of making the garden part of their home. Dave Caborn, MD of daVally Landscape and Garden Services, is a true advocate of outdoor living. “It’s been a very busy summer, and we’re thrilled to have helped so many of our clients by designing and building new gardens they can use and enjoy throughout the year.” The company wants to help more homes, so has organised an open day on 13 October for people to visit their showroom and be inspired with new ideas for next summer. Dave explains: “Autumn is a great time to start planning for next year. Arranging visits
T
and discussing options with our clients takes time. This is our way to start the ball rolling and ensure everything is in place for next summer.” The open day is a great opportunity to visit the showroom (a two-minute walk from SWFC) and have a look at their portfolio of existing work. There will also be an extensive display of the materials they use for gardens, patios and driveways. daVally is an accredited installer (and award winner) for Marshalls, the UK’s leading supplier of landscape products. Marshalls are supporting the open day with samples of their materials and some free advice. Dave added: “The whole aim of the day is to provide some inspiration to help clients make the most of their outdoor areas, be it gardens, patios or driveways. We’re backing this aim with an exclusive offer to guarantee this year’s prices for 2019 projects from open day visitors that make bookings before Christmas.” Whilst it’s a great idea to begin planning for your new
garden through the winter months in preparation for the summer, it can also be a good time to start the work. It is often presumed landscaping can’t be done during the colder months. However, if the weather is mild, this can actually be a great time to build your new garden. Here are a few reasons why: 1) You’ll be able to enjoy your new area straight away rather than waiting for the work to be completed in the spring. 2) At this time of year, you’re less likely to be using the outdoor areas as much, so there is less inconvenience to you. 3) There is less chance of damaging your landscape during construction as much of your vegetation will already be dormant, but it’s still a good time to plant new trees and shrubs around a new patio or drive. daVally has been operating for nearly ten years and are experienced at working during all months of the year. The team offer clients a range of attractive design options to suit different styles, tastes and budgets. All of this is complimented by a professional and friendly service. Visit their showroom on the open day to be inspired to start planning your garden, patio or drive for next year. To start enjoying your new outdoor area sooner rather than later, make that visit or give them a call. daVally Landscapes & Gardens Tel: 0114 231 3594 / 07789 372462 www.davally.co.uk

The Retreat Laser Clinic is one of few specialised stockists who provide medical grade laser treatments by Cynosure® and skincare products by AlumierMD, which require little to no down time. And because these brands are medical grade, you can only buy them from specialists such as The Retreat Laser Clinic. After the warm summer months, many of us will be left with skin that is dull and dry. A facial is the perfect way to rebuild our skin, and with The Retreat Laser Clinic offering a skin analysis and bespoke treatment, their facials are tailored to suit every skin type and budget. Treatments can be carried out in just half an hour or full bespoke luxury facials are on offer if you have more time. Peels are another great way to deeply cleanse and moisturise this month, with vitamin masks boosting the health of our skin and leaving us feeling both truly pampered and satisfied with the results. The whole process lasts between an hour to an hour-and-a-half, and a specialist will advise you on the best AlumierMD products to use at home for longer-lasting healthy skin.
It’s very important to visit an experienced professional who will design a programme and prescribe the appropriate products for you. Owner, Kate Watson qualified as a laser therapist in 2013 and worked in a busy clinic in Nottingham, undergoing training and gaining valuable experience with many different lasers and aesthetic procedures. After returning to Sheffield, she decided she would open her own laser clinic, providing a platform to share her expertise and begin offering pioneering treatments at competitive prices. A skin assessment is always recommended before any procedure, and Kate welcomes clients old and new to visit the clinic for a free consultation. And if you are wanting to give someone else a treat, gift vouchers are also available for facials, products and massages. So whether you are wanting smoother legs and a healthier complexion for yourself or a treat for a friend, advice is always at hand at The Retreat Laser Clinic. Call 07967 107313 or email kate@theretreatlaserclinic.co.uk to find out how Kate can help you.

Refresh your summer glow YOU CAN’T BEAT THE NATURAL LOOK... JUST TURN UP, TAN AND GO AT TANZONE. ow that the summer sun is fading, you might already be dreaming of your next getaway. But if that seems a little out of reach, there’s an easy alternative. You might be tempted to put on a layer or two of fake tan, but do you really want to risk that infamous orange tint or being caught out in the rain and ruining your nice new white clothes? A visit to Tanzone will refresh your summer glow long after the clouds have taken over, and you won’t be left trying to hide that patch on your back that you couldn’t quite reach. Based on Middlewood Road, Tanzone had been run as a tanning salon for around 15 years before the current owners took over and gave the store a whole new look. Tanzone has been fully refurbished to the highest standard and the new management brought in all new beds when they reopened in April. When they took over the store, the new owners of Tanzone made sure that they retained all of the original staff from the previous store to ensure that when you visit them, you’re getting a high quality service from knowledgeable and experienced members of staff. When you visit Tanzone, you’ll be able to

DON’T SLIP UP WHEN BUYING A NEW BUILD, SAY THE EXPERTS AT WOSSKOW BROWN. uying a new build home is a great option for many people, whether you have a growing family or you’re right-sizing in your later years. Even for firsttime buyers, a newly-built house can seem like a less stressful option since you are able to move straight in, you won’t need a structural survey and your home should be covered by a 10-year warranty. It’s incredibly important to be careful when buying a new build, as there are many things that may come back to haunt you if you don’t check them earlier on. Believe it or not, there can be a lot of confusion about exactly how much you are paying for the property, especially if you have negotiated to pay for extras. The developer may expect you to pay for extras up front, but you must not do this until contracts have been exchanged, otherwise it’ll be difficult for you to get your money back if the developer feels you have broken faith with them if you don’t proceed to purchase.
B
Searches that solicitors do on a new build are not only absolutely necessary, they’re actually even more important for a brand new property. These property searches provide crucial information about your house and surrounding areas; a mining search will reveal whether there are any shafts within 20 metres of the house, and a local search shows all planning permission and building regulation approvals for the house. It is also important to ask your solicitor to talk you through the rights being granted and also the rights of others, including any covenants and restrictions which you have to follow.
WE’RE KEY TO BUYING YOUR NEW HOME

Help when you need it the most
AS A FORMER VICTIM HERSELF, LAURA RILEY DEDICATES HER TIME TO HELPING SURVIVORS OF EMOTIONAL ABUSE THROUGH HER CHARITY, MUMS IN NEED. SHE SPEAKS TO HANNAH SANDERS. aura Riley is a healthcare professional in mental health who suffered years of emotional and financial abuse at the hands of her son’s father. Following her legal battles and after reestablishing her life in Sheffield, Laura decided to set up an online support group – Mums In Need (MIN) – to help other mothers who have had or are facing similar experiences. Laura founded the organisation in 2013, and since then MIN has continued to grow with help from volunteers, grants, family and mums themselves, becoming a registered charity in February this year.

“I met my son’s father when I was 26. On the surface he was kind, charming, funny and very caring and I thought I was in love. After I became pregnant, cracks started to appear and he began manipulating our financial situation and isolated me from friends and family. “When my son turned one and I stopped breastfeeding, he asked me to leave and the problems continued. Sometimes when I would go to pick my son up he wouldn’t be there, he refused to take him to nursery and was harassing me for money. “I removed my son from the environment as I was terrified he would take his anger out on him, and then came an arduous legal @SixerRMC
battle. The fact that my ex was an emotional abuser wasn’t recognised by the courts and I felt like my child’s and my own emotional needs weren’t being met. The whole court process was utterly soul destroying. “The original court case started in 2009 and ended in 2011 but because of the physical and emotional safety concerns I had the matter returned to court in 2013. It stopped and started again in 2015 for a year – so it was a painstakingly long process. Although I had to go through the family courts numerous times, I learnt to understand that no matter how hard things get and how difficult the battle is, it’s worth fighting. “It’s been a difficult process, but I have
SIXER HEROES
been able to rebuild my life and both my son and I are now in a place where we are happy. I’ve married a man who is the true definition of unconditional love and has supported me 100 per cent with MIN. Now that I am on the other side, I feel so strongly about supporting other mums who have/are going through this too.” Sheffield-based MIN offers women face-toface support to help them get the help they need to overcome their fears and ultimately rebuild their lives. Unlike other organisations, there’s no time limit to how long you can use MIN services – whether it’s a few weeks, months or years, Laura, her staff and the volunteers are simply there to help in any way possible. Now that the charity has grown, the online support service is no longer needed, as they conduct face-to-face assessments in their office. What’s great about this service, is as some of the women have children they’re able to bring them along and one of the team will look after them whilst having a session. “It’s a really easy referral process for the mums. They can either call the helpline or email us, and someone will be in touch to get them booked in for an assessment within a couple of days. Our service isn’t clinical at all, we have such a relaxed atmosphere, making sure that the mums feel at home when they come to us. “Before a mum comes to us we ask them to complete a pre-assessment form just to
check that we are the right place for them. More often than not we are, but in some cases if we think another organisation would provide them with the correct help and care we will point them in the right direction.” Not only do the wonderful team at MIN provide much-needed support through weekly phone calls, face-to-face visits, coffee mornings, holistic therapies or counselling but they’re able to help provide legal service for family court. “We were given some funding from the National Lottery and used this to bring in trained counsellors and legal support – McKenzie Friends. The McKenzie Friends help those mums who can’t afford solicitors themselves. “When a mum needs to go to court, we can help fill in all the paperwork and the legal support taught us how to do this. Then a member of the McKenzie Friends will go to court with the mum, and if she would like, one of us is always able to go along too and provide moral support.” To help keep the funds coming in, MIN have a shop on site which they hold regular sales in. And they frequently run raffles, coffee mornings and have over 45 charity pots dotted across Sheffield and Rotherham. “When I look back at what I have done with MIN, it’s amazing and I do feel incredibly proud. It’s hard to think sometimes that if I hadn’t gone through such a horrendous experience, I wouldn’t be where I
am today providing women with security, a sense of worth, help and support through difficult times. “I pour my heart and soul into everything I do with MIN – I just love it. I can get quite choked up when I hear what the charity does for the mums. We’ve created a real sense of family, and I just want to continue providing that for these women. “This year we’re going to continue applying for grants, so we can get some more funding and increase the service we provide. “For all those mums out there that are suffering from emotional abuse – you aren’t alone. Please don’t be afraid to come forward and ask for help. At MIN we provide a safe, warm, homely place where you can come with your child and get the support that you need.” For more information on Mums In Need or how to refer yourself call 0800 852 7414, email enquiries@mumsinneed.com or visit www.mumsinneed.com. If anyone would like to join their amazing team of volunteers email Laura at enquiries@mumsinneed.com and she’ll be in touch.

Forgotten over time IN A SERIES OF EVENTS, HERITAGE OPEN DAYS ARE CELEBRATING EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN. RHIANA HUGHES REMEMBERS LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU, A PROMINENT FIGURE WHO HELPED TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF MEDICAL HISTORY. hen you think of Wortley you probably think of a quiet little village where nothing much happens, but what you may not know is that this quaint South Yorkshire parish has links to a woman who changed the course of medical history. A letter writer, a poet, a feminist and much more, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu is anything but a woman who should be left in the past. We spoke to George Clark, who’ll be giving the talk on Lady Montagu at Heritage Open Days’ upcoming Extraordinary Women event. He walked us through why it’s so important for us to recognise the work she did, as well as why we need to make sure we never forget the women who changed the world we live in. “Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was a prominent figure in 18th century England. A beautiful woman, she was a feminist at a time when women were expected to be subservient, she was intelligent and independently-minded and it was she who originally brought smallpox inoculation to Britain,” he said. Mary was born Lady Mary Pierrepont in 1689, the daughter of the Earl of Kingston, a man not particularly keen on the education of women. Despite her father’s views on this, Mary chose to educate herself using his wellstocked library. She taught herself Greek, Latin and German, and by the time she was 14 she had written two albums of poetry and a couple of novels. Years down the line Mary met her future husband, Edward Wortley Montagu, through the friendship she had with his sister. The eldest son and head of the Wortley Montagu family, Edward was a Lord of the Manor of Wortley, and later became an Earl of Wharncliffe. The two became engaged, however Mary’s father forbade the marriage following an argument with Edward, and arranged for her to instead marry a man by the name of Clotworthy Skeffington. Mary was not by any means the sort of woman to let the opinions of others dissuade her from doing what she wanted to do, and this led to Mary and Edward eloping and marrying in Salisbury. Edward eventually became MP for Westminster and Mary a prominent member in high society due to her charm and wit, even becoming friendly with the Princess of Wales and the King’s mistresses. Zorro Lounge due for autumn opening at Fox Valley
BITS &S PIECE
Work has started this month on creating a brand new casual restaurant and bar at Fox Valley shopping centre in Stocksbridge. The popular brand, Lounges, will be opening its new Zorro Lounge in a £550,000 investment at the awardwinning centre in October. The company is currently transforming the former Central Bean coffee shop unit at Fox Valley into a stunning, quirky and casual dining experience, bringing something completely different for visitors and shoppers. The new café bar will cover 3,225 sq. ft. in the busy piazza area, with 25 new jobs being created. The move is part of a plan to create a new restaurant offering, with a new restaurant quarter by the entrance to the centre. Other changes include the creation of a new unit, as well as a new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and bakery. Zorro Lounge will offer a great menu focussed on casual dining from breakfast through to dinner as well as a great cocktails and drinks menu. Founded in 2002, the company now has Lounges and Cosy Clubs across the UK – the name Zorro Lounge has been chosen for the Fox Valley restaurant as Zorro is Spanish for Fox. Phil Kinsella, operations manager of Lounges, said: “We’re really looking forward to throwing the doors open at Zorro Lounge and showing the locals how to lounge in style. Fox Valley is a fantastic location for us, and the team are looking forward to becoming part of the local community, and will support local groups and initiatives wherever possible.” To keep up to date with all the latest Fox Valley news, visit www.foxvalleysheffield.co.uk.

Snapshots Wedding bells were ringing in Bradfield this summer, when Charlotte Slater said “I do” to Jonny North at St Nicholas’ Church. Charlotte’s father, Simon, owns local family business, Slater’s Aerials. Simon, Charlotte’s mother Marie and many other members of the couple’s family and friends gathered for a gorgeous day – as can be seen in these photos. The Slater family would like to make a special mention of Keith Pearson at Loxley Nursery for supplying beautiful potted plants to decorate the venue, Foxholes Farm and their team for a lovely venue and all their help in setting up, as well as Harrods the caterers for supplying wonderful food and service. Legends cars also provided a great service and gorgeous cars, while Those Cherished Moments were a huge help and Samantha Broadley took the wonderful photographs of the day.
WELCOME TO MY OFFICE Views from the roofs of S6 Simon Slater of Slater’s Aerial Services has a different ‘office view’ to most of us – a rooftop vista of Sheffield. But can you guess exactly where in S6 he was when he took these photographs? To find out, see next month’s Sixer or follow @SlatersAerials and @SixerRMC on Twitter – the answer will be revealed at the end of each month. Congratulations to those who correctly guessed where Simon was last month – Loxley Road.

CHRISTMAS
Get that festive feeling IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START PLANNING THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY… SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ith the warm weather drawing to the close and summer holidays a distant memory, it can only mean one thing the countdown to Christmas and the festive party season is on. This December, across the Sheffield City Region work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or two together. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue can give dedicated, hard-working staff something fun to look forward to as the year draws to a close. It is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie.
W
It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here.

With a menu featuring everything from the famous T-bone steak and speciality homemade pies to for a range of homemade desserts, there’s something for every taste. And on Sundays, the chefs rustle up an unbeatable roast, but be sure to book ahead as seats fill up fast. The quiz nights run by Crazy Craig continue to go from strength to strength, and always provide a fun night, with plenty of banter to be had with their lovely customers – especially with their play your cards right feature. A pub would be nothing without some top notch ales, and the pub now has five core beers on tap from their very own onsite brewery, which were launched in February and have been flying out the bar ever since. All are available for £2.70 or take advantage of their midweek offer, where you can get a pint for just £2.20 from 12pm until 4pm. The pub also has one of the biggest selections of cask and keg ales in the area, featuring offerings from breweries in and around Sheffield, as well as from all over the @SixerRMC
UK, so regulars will be pleased to know that the selection is always changing and there’s always something new to try. There is always something new happening at The Wisewood Inn, and the pub is looking forward to having a freshening up, with a new colour scheme about to be introduced in the bar and lounge area. What’s more, The Wisewood Inn Brewery sell their ales in many other pubs in the local area and are pleased to announce that they have been invited to Sheffield Beer Festival in October. The Wisewood team also have their very own events van and will be rocking up to several festivals and events next year so watch out for them. Many visitors are eager to sneak a peek at the brewery, and the team are only too happy to accommodate this. Brewery merchandise is now available too. So whether you’re looking for a great place to eat on the run up to Christmas or are an ale enthusiast, wanting to know how your favourite local ale is brewed, visit The Wisewood Inn this autumn and winter. Service guaranteed YOU CAN BE SURE THAT CARRACKS WALLPAPER & PAINT WILL HELP YOU TO FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCTS AT THE RIGHT PRICE – WHATEVER YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. ver the years, many businesses have come and gone in Crookes, but Carracks Wallpaper & Paint on the corner of Northfield Road is one store that has stood the test of time. The store will be a familiar sight to locals, having been firmly established in the same spot since 1947. The business was opened by musical legend Paul Carrack’s parents, Ben and Joan, before eventually being taken over by his older brother, John. Current owner Simon Bradbury worked with John for 15 years and bought the business from him two years ago. As a decorator who has worked in the industry for nearly 30 years, Simon has a wealth of knowledge to supply paints, wallpapers, brushes and other accessories, such as fillers and pastes, to both trade customers and the general public.
O
84 Sixer | www.sixermagazine.co.uk
“Most people just come in for some good solid advice,” says Simon. “People come to us because we provide the right products and a personal service. We can get hold of most brands and they are discounted, so we are also cheaper than a lot of other paint and wallpaper stores.” Their top-quality paint brands include Dulux, Heritage, Johnstone’s and popular chalk paint Rust-oleum, whilst their brush and tool brands include Harris and Purdy. If you need a little inspiration, they have hundreds of wallpaper books for you to leaf through and even provide a colour matching service – just bring in the shade you want matching up and Carracks will do the rest. And though Carracks continues to give the same good old-fashioned, friendly service and wide range of paints and wallpapers it always has, Simon is bringing the business firmly into the 21st century. A new website is coming soon and will enable customers to buy products at the click of a mouse. Regular clients will also be pleased to hear that the store is now open on Thursdays and accepts all major credit and debit cards. Simon has also recently taken on new member of staff, John Allot, who is also a painter and decorator, so they can continue to give customers dedicated one-on-one advice. It may look like a modestly-sized shop on the outside but, as two terrace houses put together, Carracks has many nooks and crannies full of paints and products to discover. Customers often refer to Carracks as an Aladdin’s cave. If you’ve never had a peek inside the store, Google ‘Carracks’ to have a 360degree virtual tour today. @SixerRMC

It was a year that changed history, 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe. It was also the year that a plumber from Sheffield decided to make a go of it himself. And so Bumford Heating was born. Chris Bumford started the business, from humble beginnings in their spare bedroom in Wincobank. He installed his first boiler that same year, and never looked back. Now run by Chris’ son Neil, the company goes from strength to strength in its fiftieth year.
Amadou, our French apprentice working at a local property
“We are incredibly proud of this milestone” says Neil. “It can be difficult to know which company to trust in your home. I think the reason Bumfords is still here is that we value honesty and integrity, and we get the job done at a fair price. And now with over 50 years of recommendations under our belt, people see us as a trustworthy family firm.” Whether you are looking for a new boiler, heating system upgrade, new controls, plumbing or bathroom work, repairs or servicing - why not contact one of the friendly team at Bumfords.
