MIDDLEWOOD ROAD
Everything you need YOU CAN LIVE A QUIETER LIFE ON MIDDLEWOOD ROAD, WRITES LUCY JAMES, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR FOR ALL YOUR ESSENTIALS. ituated in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield is Middlewood Road. The highly popular and bustling road is located just under three miles north-west of Sheffield city centre making it possible to drive to the city in just 15 minutes. The road is amongst some of the nicer roads to live on in north Sheffield, with the location being just one of the many reasons for this. The crime rates in the area are relatively low for a busy area and it is popular amongst families with there being a range of different schools nearby, including a popular and highly rated ‘forest school’ nursery. For such a popular area, the road has a surprisingly low average house price of £139,853, which is amazing for everything that comes with living on this road. The location of the road allows residents to live a quieter city life on the outskirts of a busy city centre and despite it being around a one-hour walk to the city centre, the residents of Middlewood Road do not have far to go for all of their essentials with them having an abundance of amenities on their doorsteps.
S

What is there? Middlewood Road is the home to numerous amenities, including a nursery, a Methodist Church, dentists, a doctor’s surgery, opticians, cafes, a shopping centre with supermarkets on site, hair and beauty salons, a pharmacy, a park, and excellent transport links including Hillsborough Park tram stop.
There are schools located nearby with excellent reviews and it is not far from the Northern General Hospital, making it a perfect location for families.
Things to do: With the resident’s average age being 39, the road is arguably the most popular road in Hillsborough amongst many age

groups and it is all down to the vast number of things to do that are nearby. With there being something for everyone, here is a list of some of the best things to do near Middlewood Road. Hillsborough Stadium
Located in the Owlerton suburb of Sheffield and just over a ten-minute walk from Middlewood Road is the famous Hillsborough Stadium. The stadium came to fame after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 which led to 96 deaths caused by a human crush. Despite its tragic past, the stadium is the home to Sheffield Wednesday and is the perfect place for football fans to spend their weekends.
park, encouraging locals to keep fit and get outdoors. Hillsborough Golf Club
A five-minute drive away from Middlewood Road is Hillsborough Golf Club. The Golf Club welcomes both members and non-members to their
green to play golf, except on Thursdays which is a member only day. The club has stunning views of Sheffield and the hills and greenspaces surrounding it, adding to the enjoyment and the reasons why you should visit. Owlerton Stadium
Just a five-minute drive, or a 20-minute walk away is the Owlerton Stadium; Sheffield’s premier racetrack, home to greyhound, speedway and stockcar racing. This makes a fun and great day out for families and friends. Overlooking the racetrack is the ‘Panorama’ bar and restaurant which offers a large, seasonal menu which has great reviews.
Hillsborough Park
Situated next to Middlewood Road, giving some houses on the road a spectacular green space view, is Hillsborough Park. The Park features a large amount of greenspace, a lake, a walled garden which is said to date back to 1779, a children’s play area and sports facilities making it a great spot to keep fit, have fun or relax. The Park has had some recent refurbishment work done which has resulted in an extension of the children’s play area, and a jogging track around the

Lacking comfort in your conservatory? It’s time for an Equinox solid conservatory roof Equinox brings solid roof insulation to your conservatory Custom uPVC windows supplied and fitted in Sheffield, South Yorkshire Sheffield Double Glazing has been supplying and installing uPVC windows across Sheffield and the surrounding area since 2009. We have a wealth of knowledge in the home improvement and double glazing industry that we use to provide the best advice and service we can.
Attractive and secure home entrance doors Your front door is the first thing that people see when they arrive at your home. The perfect front door could be bold, vibrant, understated, traditional, or modern depending on your property style and personal preference. Whether you want a classic white uPVC entrance door, a bright red composite door, or an aluminium front door in stylish anthracite grey, we’ve got you covered. At Sheffield Double Glazing Company, all our front doors are made to measure and bespoke designed to match your exact requirements.
The answer to this ‘Goldilocks Problem’ - too hot, too cold, but hardly ever just right - is above your head. In a new, solid conservatory roof replacement that includes proper insulation, just like the roof on your house, to control the temperature in your conservatory so it’s ‘just right’ the whole year around. The Eurocell Equinox solid conservatory roof.
Insulating you from higher energy bills The key to all the extra comfort and convenience an Equinox roof brings to your conservatory is in its insulating roof panels. It’s what’s known in the industry as a ‘Warm Roof’ design - one that keeps heat in right up to the ceiling apex so the whole space stays cosy and warm. It’s reckoned a solid conservatory roof is up 15 times better at keeping heat in than a 16mm polycarbonate or an old glass conservatory roof. And while it might be very slim, giving you more overall space and height to enjoy, the highly efficient conservatory roof insulation we use in Equinox is among the most effective on the market. In fact, it has a uvalue of just 0.15. Or, to put it another way, it’s around 10 times more energy efficient than an A-rated double glazed window.

Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Using the revolutionary 365 insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, Sagars 365 can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use 365 days a year. According to a Survey carried out by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the average conservatory owner uses an extra 4,800 kWh per annum. Which at 15.5p pkw equates to £744 per year! The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. All work is completed in a day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep everyone safe. And it costs less than you would think - prices include fitting,VAT, and a 10 year guarantee. With 25% off for a limited time, the cost of a typical 3x3m conservatory is just £1,699. Don't miss out, call us for a quote today! Interest free credit available over 10 months (subject to approval). Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

TRUSTPILOT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS: “What can I say apart from excellent. They arrived on time, did an excellent job, when finished left it as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

Double the magic
Step into your walking shoes
It’s double the singing and dancing as STOS Theatre Company gets set for its return to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre. Rehearsals for the STOS November premiere of Broadway and West End hit Elf are now well under way. But to ensure that the Lyceum show will go on without any health hitches between 16-20 November, the company has shared the two starring roles among four actors. Playing hero Buddy - the human raised by accident among the elves of the North Pole - will be Richard Granger and Damien Ross. And sharing the role of Jovie, the department store Santa’s Grotto assistant who wins his heart, will be Katie Granger and Ellie Hudson. “This is the first time we have ever shared lead roles but under current circumstances, we were determined that the show will go ahead without any hitches,” said STOS chairman Phil Brownhill. “All our rehearsals are being conducted in strict accordance with current Covid guidelines and we are confident that we will reach opening night with no problems. “Our four lead actors will be sharing three performances each and we think this approach will give us some added security in the current continuing Covid climate.” Elf: The Musical is based on the smash hit Will Ferrell movie about Buddy, a human raised amongst elves, who travels to New York in search of his biological father - with unexpected and hilarious consequences. And when Santa himself is threatened by modern day cynicism as he makes his deliveries on Christmas Eve, it’s down to Buddy and his new family and friends to save the season and bring some traditional festive magic back for the holiday. Get ready for one of Sheffield’s most popular fundraising events… Night Strider is back! Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s Hospice charity spectacular, now in its seventh year, that sees supporters heading off on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. In 2020 the event went virtual for the first time as supporters did their own lockdown walks, following Government Covid-19 guidelines. And it’s safety first this year too as participants are again encouraged to choose their own 10k or half marathon route on Saturday 2 October. The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is free to enter, with a medal for everybody who finishes the challenge and returns their sponsorship money. Everybody who signs up will also have the chance to buy a Night Strider T shirt for just £5 - while stocks last. “Night Strider is a great event for the whole family to be a part of,” said St Luke’s Projects and Events Coordinator Rachel Spofforth. “This year we’re asking you to set your own 10k or half marathon course and hopefully get family and friends to join you in the challenge - always following all the latest guidance on social distancing and health safety.” St Luke’s would like to see as many people as possible complete their challenge on Night Strider day, Saturday October 2, though it will be possible to take part throughout the rest of the month. “What we want more than anything is to keep the spirit of Night Strider alive until we can all meet up again, hopefully in 2022,” said Rachel. “Night Strider is always a massive success and this year we need all our walkers to encourage their family and friends to give as much support as possible. To find out more about Virtual Night Strider and how to get involved simply visit www.nightstrider.co.uk
Launching a year of fundraising It’s a great way to cool down on a hot summer’s day… and an even greater way to raise money for a fantastic cause! Sheffield’s Westbourne School has chosen the city’s antitrafficking charity The Snowdrop Project as its new charity of the year. And to get the fundraising started, staff at the Broomhill independent school put themselves in the firing line with a Soak the Teacher Day. “Considering how hot it has been, everybody was rather happy to take the plunge,” said Junior School Headmaster Jon Clark. “We’ve supported many charities over the years everybody from St Luke’s Hospice to Blue Cross for Pets and we look forward to everybody at Westbourne joining in with fundraising for The Snowdrop Project.” 30 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

BRADFIELD
A living legacy ANNE MARSHALL, TRUSTEE/FMC CHAIR, DELVES INTO THE HISTORY OF THE IBBOTSON MEMORIAL FIELD AT LOW BRADFIELD. he original concept of a recreation area for the people of Low & High Bradfield, together with the rest of the inhabitants of the Parish, was the brainchild of John Ibbotson of Burnside, Low Bradfield (1847-1923), whose family had links to the area which can be traced back over 400 years. The memorial stone in the field wall is dedicated to his memory and that of his wife Eliza (1849-1931) and his brother William Ibbotson (1844-1911). The Memorial Field today was originally two fields, divided by a dry stone wall, one of which was acquired by John Ibbotson from the Rev. BriarlyBrowne on 21 May 1912 and the other, on 22 March 1913, from the Rev. Barnett Riddlesden. It was John’s wish, that after his death and that of his wife who lived at Burnside, ownership of that land be vested in a group of Trustees. They were to be responsible for directing the development of facilities within the boundary of the land for the benefit of the whole community. A Trust deed was drawn up and the first Trustees appointed in March 1937. In due course four associations made their home on the field, a village hall was built, and bowls, cricket and tennis clubs founded. To this day Ibbotson family members serve as Trustees and although no longer living locally, visit regularly. In the beginning the field was closed on Sundays, in line with the original Trustees staunch Methodist principles, and it was only in 1980 that the field was first opened on Sundays for a trial period from May to September. Alcohol was not allowed to be served on the field in any guise for the same reason. As time has moved on various changes have been made – the field is now open every day of the week and the cricket club and the village hall have permission to sell alcohol subject to certain restrictions. Some advertising banners have been agreed to in recent years, to provide associations with the ability to attract sponsorship and raise funds. Such developments, whilst not always popular with everyone, are essential for the
T
40 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
continued viability and vibrancy of the field and its sections and to ensure that this wonderful facility remains in place for future generations to enjoy. All four sections of the field operate completely independently when it comes to the day to day running of their own organisations. Each association is represented on the Field Management Committee, which was established in 1984 to deal with all those matters that affected every section and pertaining to the field as a whole. Legally the field is owned by the Trust, not, as many people assume, Bradfield Parish Council, and is administered by the FMC. The Ibbotson Memorial Field Trust is also a registered charity.

A great deal of hard work is done on the field and behind the scenes by both Trustees, members and volunteers, very largely unpaid and all for the benefit of villagers, club members and visitors. Also operating in the field and in High and Low Bradfield, is the Bradfield in Bloom group of volunteers who raise money and provide the flowers in the Field and around the villages. Their work adds hugely to the visual impact of both villages and the field. Bradfield Bowling Club in particular, has also put their green fingers to work over many years with their floral display and wellmaintained hedging. Whether you live in the Parish or are a visitor to the field, spare a thought for the foresight and the generosity of those who gifted this living legacy. By now it must have provided thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people, with a place to play their sports or to gather for family celebrations, be it a picnic on the field or a wedding at the Village Hall. If you are interested in taking on a voluntary role and would like to know of any such opportunities among the associations within the field, contact details are listed here. Currently, Bradfield Village Hall is looking for some extra hands on their committee to help with all the activities and functions that they host, so if you think you could help out in any way they would be delighted to hear from you.

EATING OUT
The staff at West 10
Focussing on food DON’T OVERLOOK THE RESTAURANT AT WEST 10, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. n a year of ups and downs, West 10, that hugely popular wine bar and restaurant in Ranmoor, is certainly on a positive trajectory. Now under new ownership, Klaus Bach is overseeing a shift in focus back towards food giving head chef Chris Parker freedom to express himself with a range of tempting bistro-style dishes. He’s also introduced a brunch menu and Sunday lunches too. Westside readers will be familiar with Chris Parker who was our most recent recipient of our ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award at our annual Restaurant & Bar Awards. At the time, Chris was praised for his ‘near-faultless course’ of lamb cannon served with rosemary fondant potatoes. Chris had said of winning the award, which was judged after a Masterchefstyle cook-off: “It went better than I thought although I was a bit nervous at first. I kept things seasonal, I stuck to the brief and thankfully I impressed everyone. It’s given me the confidence now to move things on at West 10.” That increased confidence was clear to see on a menu that included dishes such as Beef fillet served with fondant potato, beef dripping crumb, wild mushroom and Madeira sauce and watercress, and
I
42 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Crispy duck egg with chorizo emulsion and asparagus. We chose from both the specials and a la carte menu and were impressed with everything we ate. Just as impressive was the remodelled upstairs dining room which is now a much brighter and more inviting space with white walls, striking palm print wallpaper, dark wood tables and green velvet chairs. We started with starters of Hendricks and beetroot cured salmon served with horseradish cream, pickled cucumber and toast (£8) and pan-fried scallops with squid ink tuile, pea puree and pancetta (£8). Salmon and horseradish is so often a winning combination and this version didn’t disappoint whilst the scallops were perfectly cooked with their sweetness balanced out by the saltiness of the pancetta and squid ink tuile. My wife indulged her love for seafood further with an excellent main of panfried swordfish with herb potatoes, roast cherry tomatoes and salsa verde (£16), which was well-cooked and had a real summery flavour. My slow roast belly pork (£16), which had been rolled and sliced, had lovely crisp crackling on the outside and deliciously soft flesh underneath. Accompaniments of glazed pig’s cheeks, black pudding crumb, mash, kale and cider jus added extra interest
and flavour - the sauce was particularly good and work really well with the pork. Desserts came in the form of a rich and indulgent sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream (£6) for her and a cheeseboard (£6) with biscuits, cheddar, stilton, brie, celery, grapes, chutney and butter for me. I thought I’d gone for the lighter option with the cheese but given the size of the plate, it would have easily fed both of us! Rising star Chris is clearly hitting those high standards he set at our competition two years ago and will hopefully be cranking things up a notch in the coming months. West 10 will long maintain it’s reputation as a wine bar and the place to drop in for a drink or two but don’t overlook the restaurant, that little walk upstairs is well worth it. Time to rediscover FROM BEAR TRAILS TO LIGHT SHOWS, THERE’S LOTS TO TEMPT YOU BACK INSIDE SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL THIS AUTUMN. fter over 12 months of changing restrictions, it’s great to say that Sheffield Cathedral is open and open fully. Daily services have resumed, the gift shop and coffee shop are welcoming customers and there are a number of events and exhibitions, showing now or in the coming months, to tempt visitors back in to the splendid building once again. “It’s wonderful to see people of all generations coming back into the cathedral,” said Sheffield Cathedral’s development manager, Ben Rossi. “Going forward, into the autumn, it gives us great confidence that things will return to some resemblance of normality.” Popular over the summer has been The Foundry exhibition, which runs until 2 September. This exhibition, which has been curated by sculptor Peter Walker, celebrates the historical industry and social aspects of Sheffield’s steel heritage presented through contemporary artworks. Digital technology, art and sculpture (in steel, naturally) all feature. If you’ve been following the The Bears of Sheffield trail – there are 100 little and 60 big bears located all around the city – you may have already visited Sheffield Cathedral to catch a glimpse of this wonderful public arts exhibition which has been coordinated by The Children’s Hospital Charity. In the run up to Christmas there is a planned remembrance service and from November you will be able to see the Christmas Tree Festival (30 November-2 January) and, postponed from last year, The Beginning: Christmas Light Show (30 November-5 December). Local businesses, schools and charities have been invited to sponsor Christmas trees as part of the Christmas Tree Festival which will be displayed around the stunning interior of the building and visitors can visit free of charge. The Beginning: Christmas Light Show will see Sheffield Cathedral transformed by Luxmuralis.Visitors will be able to watch the Nativity story unfold and delight in Christmas celebrations as the

Cathedral’s facade is transformed by light and digital artwork projections. Come inside you will be immersed in a stunning sensory experience of light and sound, inspired by the Cathedral’s historic stained-glass windows. Tickets for this will be on sale in September and priced £7.50 for adults, £6 for children aged 3-15 and £3 for carers. In the midst of the reopening and myriad events taking place, Sheffield Cathedral has also appointed a new dean – Revd Canon Abigail Thompson – and
she will take up her post on 6 November. “Sheffield Cathedral is the place where I was ordained deacon in 2006 and I got married here in 2010,” she said. “I’ve made vows here, I’ve wept into the stone floor, I’ve rejoiced here and I’ve lit candles here for people I have loved and lost. “I am blessed and honoured and totally thrilled that this is the place where I will soon daily say my prayers and get to love and serve the people of this great city, this wonderful Cathedral and the whole Diocese of Sheffield.” Whether you call in for worship, for a coffee or to see the bears, there are plenty of reasons to visit Sheffield Cathedral in the coming months. The Cathedral is open to visitors from 9am5pm Monday-Saturday and 8am-3pm on Sundays, with Holy Communion by the rite of the Book of Common Prayer at 8am and the Cathedral Eucharist at 10.30am.They have decided to keep measures in place to help to keep you safe and to restrict the spread of COVID-19 during your visit, encouraging you to support the NHS Test & Trace programme (anyone aged 16 years and over), wear a face covering (over 11s only), unless exempt, use the hand sanitiser stations provided, and maintain social distancing and keep younger visitors with you during your visit. 30 years and counting WOODLANDS PRESCHOOL NURSERY HAVE REACHED A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE. eptember will see children throughout Sheffield and beyond returning to school and nursery, hopefully with a spring in their step. For Woodlands Preschool Nursery, this year will be extra special as they will be celebrating their 30th anniversary. The family-run business was started by Neil and Denise Stenton in September 1991 and is now in the capable hands of their daughter, Emma Wood. Converted from an old barn, it is situated on the edge of the countryside and provides a welcoming space for local children between birth and five years. It has expanded over the years and kept pace with an ever-changing curriculum. “We pride ourselves on our outdoor space and facilities,” said Emma. “As we are located in five acres of open
S
farmland, and with sheep and chickens roaming the land, children can observe the animals in their habitats and sometimes even have the opportunity to lend a hand. “As part of our care and education provision, we also offer forest schoolstyle activities alongside our curriculum giving children a broad introduction to academic, practical and fun activities.” The pandemic has provided one of the biggest challenges in their 30-year history but after staying open for key workers’ children, the nursery has thrived. “We are extremely proud to have reached our 30-year milestone, however we could not have achieved this without the hard work and dedication of our staff
team and amazing support from all the parents these last 18 months,” said Emma. Woodlands Preschool Nursery Woodland Cottage, Myers Grove Lane, Sheffield, S6 5LA Tel: 0114 234 3205

Choose carefully PA JEWELLERY CAN HELP YOU FIND THE PERFECT WEDDING RING. ith restrictions eased and lots of catching up to do, we are seeing more couples visiting us to choose their wedding bands. It can be difficult to know where to start, but following some of our hints and tips can help make your ring shopping a wonderful part of your wedding experience.
W
Give yourself enough time… When planning your wedding it can seem like there is an endless list of things to decide and your wedding rings may feel like just another item on that list, but it is worth giving them some thought early on as they are the one thing (apart from your spouse!) that you will keep forever. With so many different materials, sizes and styles to choose from wedding rings are normally made to order and although many are available more quickly, it is advised to allow up to eight weeks for this. To prevent unnecessary stress, we’d suggest giving yourself as much 52 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
time as possible; you may want to start looking and trying rings on quite early in your planning as this will help you budget and allow you to think over your choice before committing.
Try lots of rings on… The easiest way to decide if you like a design is to try it on. Looking online can provide ideas, but there is nothing quite so good as getting the ring on your finger. It often surprises people how quickly they can rule designs out once they start trying them, and those final decisions about the exact width or profile are much easier when you can directly compare them.
Consider what’s practical… Your wedding ring will probably be your most sentimental piece of jewellery and one you will wear forever. While it is important to choose a design you love, it is also important to think about how practical it is. For instance, some metal
options or designs can limit resizing or even rule it out altogether. This doesn’t bother everyone, but if you do want the ring you get married in to last forever then discussing this (admittedly unromantic) aspect now can prevent future heartache.
Ask lots of questions… As jewellers we talk to lots of couples who are in exactly your position and are well-placed to offer both practical information and style advice based on our years (sometimes decades!) of experience. You may be unsure what metal will best suit your lifestyle or whether your engagement ring would look best with a bespoke fitted band. Our job is to answer your questions and help you find your perfect ring so don’t feel afraid to ask as many as you need to so you can be confident in your choice. Swann-Morton… at the cutting edge WESTSIDE LOOKS AT A LONG-STANDING SHEFFIELD COMPANY WHO SET OUT TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. ack in 1932 three friends came together to start a business in Sheffield manufacturing selling razor blades. They had their own distinct ideology regarding how a company should be run that seemed downright revolutionary. Nearly 90 years on it still raises eyebrows. Walter Swann had left a secure position with another razor blade company to be his own boss. He brought with him Doris Fairweather, a supervisor with a strict work ethic who brought her team of female workers with her and they were joined by Alfred Morton, a metallurgist. They wanted to create a kind of Workers’ Utopia, with pay and conditions way better than what was considered standard fair practice at the time. One can only imagine how their contemporaries regarded them, possibly as eccentric dreamers who would lose their £150 investment money and emerge sadder and wiser regarding the
B
realities of modern business practices. However, this dream was built to last. Swann-Morton was to become one of Sheffield’s most spectacular success stories and its headquarters on Owlerton Green remains a familiar landmark in the city.

But even before the first razor blade was sold the founder’s principles were set out in four statements to guide the new company into the capitalist world. They were: • Claims of individuals producing in an industry come first, before anything else, and must always remain first. They are the human beings on which everything is built. • If the industry can’t pay the rightful reward of labour (while they are producing for profit for the owners) then the management must find another policy to make it do so. • If the management can’t do the job then a new management – and a new policy – is required.
• Individuals in any industry have a perfect right to demand and see this objective is reached, because they produce the goods. These words in Walter Swann’s handwriting are still displayed in the head office and they remain the principles that guide a company which has become a world leader in the manufacture of surgical blades, scalpels and handles. It has earned a worldwide reputation for quality, precision, consistency and reliability, combining traditional blade-making skills with the latest technology. With a wide range of products – around 70 individual blade shapes and 30 different handles – Swann-Morton
has become the preferred choice of surgeons around the world as well as other healthcare professionals such as GPs, nurses, paramedics, dentists, podiatrists and vets. Swann-Morton exports to over 100 countries thanks to a network of overseas distributors and two overseas subsidiaries, Swann-Morton/Sinner in France and J.K. Surgical in Poland. The change in emphasis from razor blades to surgical blades began in the 1930s and by 1957 Swann-Morton was manufacturing over 38 million blades a year. The first workshop was behind houses in Woodland Street, Hillsborough and the move to better premises on Bradfield Road was quickly followed by www.rmcmedia.co.uk 57

the first Swann-Morton scalpel. Rapid growth saw Christmas cash bonuses, paid holidays and a 40-hour week for everyone and in 1938 the first part of the present factory at Owlerton Green was purchased, with four workshops completed in time for the increased demand for surgical blades following the outbreak of the Second World War. They looked poised to cash in but prices were promptly reduced – the directors did not want to make profit out of war. It wasn’t all plain sailing. Like many businesses Swann-Morton struggled to stay afloat during the post-war recession but those founding principles and a commitment to innovation allowed the company to survive and expand again. One of the key moments in this upwards momentum came in the 1960s when, with the demand for sterilised surgical blades increasing, Swann-Morton developed a sterilisation process using Cobalt 60 gamma radiation which meant the company was now totally selfsufficient for all sterilisation requirements. Since the turn on the century extensive expansion has seen major construction work and new buildings. 58 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Cobb Works, across the road from the main site, is a purpose-built centre for research and development and engineering while Cygnet Works, some 400 yards away, provides storage space for new materials. The latest development is the opening of Woodland Works on Penistone Road in 2020 which allows Swann-Morton to bring its plastic moulding requirements in house. Swann-Morton also acquired The Jewel Blade Company, 300 metres from the main site. Now known simply as Jewel Blade, it is responsible for craft and industrial blade manufacture within the group. Today Swann-Morton employs over 300 people, uses 600 tonnes of steel a year, and makes 1.5 million surgical blades daily. They are sold in virtually every country in the world and over two-thirds of production is exported with a turnover of £20million a year. The introduction of new technology has consistently put Swann-Morton at the cutting edge of surgical blade manufacture. Quality control has always been at the heart of every process and inspections at various stages of production are just

as important now as ever. Indeed surgical blades are subject to two final inspections before packaging within a ‘clean room’ environment, after which blades are sterilised on site. Staff turnover is extraordinarily low, with unique working conditions including ten weeks holiday a year, a 35-hour week, double time for overtime, profit-related pay, private health care and a contributory pension scheme. Walter Swann died in 1980 and Doris Fairweather followed four years later. They had set up a trust when the third founder member Alfred Morton left in the 1940s to secure the future of the company, with the employees taking a 50 per cent stake in the company and the remaining 50 per cent going to a charitable trust. That’s the way it remains with staff very proud to be not only employees but an integral part of one of Sheffield’s greatest success stories of the last 100 years.

MOTORING
Welcome return
THIS MONTH SEES THE RETURN OF AN ICONIC BRAND, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
Classic racing brand Lotus have released their first road car in what seems like an age. The Emira builds on the legacy of the Elise, Exige and Evora and represents a quantum leap forward for the Norfolkbased company. A mid-engined premium sports car, the Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis, technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains an intrinsic part of the company’s sports car DNA. It will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, a Lotus-honed 3.5-litre V6 and a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘i4’ from the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The first cars will hit the road next spring with prices starting at £60,000.
Design statement The success story of Vauxhall’s Astra began over 40 years ago. Now, there’s an all-new eighth generation model about to hit the roads. The new Vauxhall Astra will launch this year as a sporty five-door with a low-slung look and yet more space than its predecessor. The new Vauxhall Astra is also a design statement for the brand. Dynamic as never before, with sheer, taut surfaces, detoxed of superfluous elements and with the new brand face – the Vauxhall Vizor. With the next compact class generation,Vauxhall shows that the Astra is ready to define a new era. Vauxhall will offer the new Astra in two performance levels as a plug-in hybrid. In addition, there are versions with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines in combination with friction-optimised six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.
Iconic engine From 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, up to 180mph top speed, RS Torque Splitter and specific RS driving modes – the new Audi RS 3 offers driving dynamics of the highest calibre and the best numbers in its segment. Equipped with a 400PS five-cylinder engine, the highperformance unit delivers rapid acceleration with a highly intoxicating sound.Visually, the RS 3 demonstrates its sporty DNA with a widened body, RS sports exhaust system, and cockpit displays like those found in race cars. “There are fewer more iconic engines in the world than Audi’s 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder,” commented Director of Audi UK Andrew Doyle. “Now more powerful than ever before, and with class-leading performance figures to back up its striking new design, the introduction of the RS 3 Sportback and Saloon reinforce Audi Sport’s commitment to setting the benchmark in every segment.” The base price for the RS 3 Sportback is set at £50,900, while the RS 3 Saloon is listed at £51,900. 66 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
