Then look no further, ice hockey is a fastgrowing sport, fun to watch and you have a local team on your doorstep. The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs is a semi-professional ice hockey club which has been running for ten years and is in the second tier of the sport in the UK – the NIHL National Division. Their home is in the heart of South Yorkshire at iceSheffield, which can hold up to 1,500 spectators. Our ethos is based on helping develop and giving opportunities to local youngsters through the sport. As a result each season our roster is brimming with former Sheffield Academy players. Ice hockey is working hard to help youngsters in your community, children from an early age can participate through the Sheffield Academy. Ice hockey gives them an opportunity to make more friends and develop socially, improve their physical strength, understand how to work as a team, learning strategy and quick thinking. They then have a chance to follow their dreams of hitting the ice as a professional ice hockey player. The Bradfield Brewery

Steeldogs are an important part of this pathway of developing junior players to seniors, enabling some players to take a step up to the highest league in the UK – and beyond. Our title sponsors Bradfield Brewery have been in partnership with the Steeldogs for several years now, with great success. John and Sue Gill have been avid ice hockey fans for over 25 years and enjoy the link with the Steeldogs, supporting from the stands and seeing the young talent coming through each year. John says: “When we come to the Steeldogs we feel we are putting something back into hockey. We have had that much pleasure out of ice hockey and our links with the Steeldogs, that we feel if we can put a little bit of something back into the sport, then that is our role. “We still get our advertising from it and it is good for us on a business footing, but I think we share some core values, especially where we see the younger lads getting their chance. It gives us great pride to see players get their chance to enjoy good coaching and then send them on to the next level to

further their careers.” This season will be no different (other than its delayed start due to COVID-19). Head coach Ben Morgan, a former academy member, is currently finalising his roster for the season ahead. So far it includes two of the most exciting forwards in the NIHL as well as two more recent academy players aged 18 and 17 respectively, not to mention two players on a two-way contract from the Sheffield Steelers. But not all players are new to the team and alongside Ben playing in defence, is a resident of Sheffield 6 and captain of the club, Lewis Bell. Lewis, from Stannington, has been a Steeldog since day one and is the only player to have been a part of the club through all ten seasons. Season 2020/21 will be his eleventh as a Dog and his fourth as club captain. Lewis sums up what makes the Steeldogs special for him: “The ongoing commitment from a core group of local lads over a number of years has been fundamental. There is quite a community feel and that helps us on the nights where we should be underdogs and keeps us challenging.” The ice hockey season usually runs September to April and the players devote a massive amount of time to being a Steeldog. In a typical week they complete four hours on-ice training sessions, off-ice training in the gym, then there are two games to be played usually on the weekend, normally one at home and one away game. This can involve hours of travelling, late nights/early mornings and as our players are only semi-professional, they all have a job to go to on a Monday morning. But with such a strong team spirit they are 100 per cent committed and enjoy being together as a team, the fans and community is what makes the Steeldogs a special something to be a part of. So how does ice hockey work? Well, a game consists of two teams with five players (per side) on the ice at any one time. The aim of the game is competition. There are three periods of 20 minutes play, two breaks inbetween of 15 minutes, a sin bin, penalties for offences and players on the ice changing over regularly, which are called “line changes”, throughout the game. It’s fast, exciting and, thanks to the supporters, very loud with cheers, 10 www.rmcmedia.co.uk

drumming and chanting. With a venue that is fully accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, there are no issues for access for people with disabilities or families. The atmosphere can be electrifying and fun for all the family. Children can skim a rubber bone along the ice and try to hit our mascot PAWZ; the closest bone gets a prize, or if they are really lucky and find a rogue puck that has escaped from the rink during a game, they can take it home as a souvenir of the night and enjoy a photo opportunity with PAWZ. For Sheffield Academy kids they even get the opportunity to be on the ice with the Steeldogs at the start and end of the match as a mascot. For adults you have a chance to win the shirt off the players back or you

could win cash by entering to our 50/50 prize draw. We have merchandise available, from key rings to jackets and shirts, and plenty of food and drink for all tastes. With COVID-19 in mind we want to keep all our Steeldogs fans safe and well so strict adherence to any government guidelines and measures will be in place to ensure you have a safe and great ice hockey experience. Whilst the Steeldogs are waiting for the government to allow ice hockey to resume after the lockdown we are not sat on our laurels. The Steeldogs – as a club, the public relations team and players – are working hard to keep you updated on team developments, grow and strengthen your ice hockey knowledge, oh, and have a bit of fun of course. Classroom calling ALL SCHOOLS ARE SET TO RE-OPEN THEIR DOORS IN SEPTEMBER. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO FIND? WE TRY TO ANSWER SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS. eturning to school in September is going to be a step into the unknown for many children and parents. For some, they won’t have set foot in a classroom for almost six months. It’s hard enough going back after the sixweek holidays, imagine what that will be like after six months? And all on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic… I have two primary school-age children whom, like the majority of the country, stopped attending at the end of March once lockdown measures were enforced. With two parents at home, homeschooling became the norm for the foreseeable future – we had timetables, lessons, games, quizzes, PE with Joe Wicks… namely anything to keep them busy and stimulated. Work was set by their school via Google Classroom and they had regular Zoom meetings to interact with their fellow classmates and teachers. It was different but they seemed to take it all in their stride. Come the end of May there was talk of returning to school before the summer, which raised a huge number of questions, mainly is it safe and how will it work? Of course, not all children did return but for those that did – including my children – it proved, in their case, to be a hugely rewarding and beneficial experience.

I have to give huge praise to the staff at my children’s school who created a safe and welcoming environment for all returning children. All classes were split into two, creating individual bubbles, and they attended two days each week from the end of June. Staggered start and finish times, oneway systems and consistent hand washing became their new norm. They loved seeing their friends and teachers and just those few days gave them an insight into what to expect come September. The government are insisting that all children return to education as it is vital for their education and for their wellbeing, as they state: “Time out of school is detrimental for children’s cognitive and academic development, particularly for disadvantaged children. This impact can affect both current levels of learning and children’s future ability to learn, and therefore we need to ensure all pupils can return to school sooner rather than later.

“We are, therefore, asking schools to prepare to welcome all children back this autumn. While coronavirus (COVID-19) remains in the community, this means making judgments at a school level about how to balance and minimise any risks from coronavirus with providing a full educational experience for children and young people.” Schools, colleges and universities will have all been risk assessed in preparation for re-opening fully and government guidelines insist that the following measures are adhered to: • a requirement that people who are ill stay at home • robust hand and respiratory hygiene • enhanced cleaning arrangements • active engagement with NHS Test and Trace • formal consideration of how to reduce contacts and maximise distancing between those in school wherever possible and minimise potential for contamination so far as is reasonably practicable. How contacts are reduced will depend on the school’s circumstances and will (as much as possible) include grouping children together, avoiding contact between groups, arranging classrooms with forward-facing desks and staff maintaining distance from pupils and other staff as much as possible. This is a step into the unknown for education establishments and will be a learning experience for pupils, staff and parents alike. Jeff Smith, the new Collegiate Principal at Queen Ethelburga’s is well aware of the challenge ahead. “The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already – are unprecedented,” he said. “We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love.” Whether primary or secondary, September will see class sizes to return to capacity the main difference being that primary schools will have class bubbles, maintaining the same teacher for all lessons, whilst secondary pupils will be in year bubbles, meaning they will remain in the same class groups but can have different teachers for different subjects. Of course there are many more questions. Here’s just a few frequently asked ones about the return: Are the teachers going to re-teach work set through lockdown?

This will vary from school to school and indeed between subjects. Ultimately, especially at secondary, there is pressure to ensure all the specification is covered so it is likely not to include a complete re-teach but a recap with content embedded in new topics where it lends itself to an easy link. What are schools going to do to keep students and staff as safe as possible?

More hand-washing will be introduced to a ‘new normal’ routine. Staggered lunch times and break times will be used with zoning of students as well as staggered start and end times to the school day. Students will all face forward and staff will remain, wherever possible, 2m apart from students. It is likely that staff will also have different lunchtimes which will decrease numbers in shared areas at any one time.

What happens if a student or staff member tests positive in the bubble?

Current guidelines from Public Health England (PHE) mean that it will be handled on a local level. The action can vary but could involve small groups of staff and students selfisolating for up to 14 days. The number of staff and students would depend on the bubble size and exposure. This could be increased if the number of positive cases increases and mobile testing units could be deployed to increase the number of tests. The guidelines change frequently so up to date information would be sought by the school. What happens to students and staff if they are selfisolating?

If students are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to access home learning that will be provided by the school. If staff are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to provide relevant resources for home learning. What happens if a student falls ill at school?

If a student becomes unwell at school, they will be asked to isolate if any symptoms match the main Covid-19 symptoms. Staff in these situations will be wearing PPE. Its likely that the school will contact parent/carer for immediate collection of the student. Individual schools will be able to provide up to date information. Seasonal ale calendar Things have been running slightly different at Bradfield Brewery since lockdown began and whilst they are slowly seeing a return back to some form of normality with deliveries into pubs, they are continuing to adapt the way they are working in order to provide the best service they can to both the hospitality industry and to the community. The Brewery Shop is back open to the public, with social distancing measures in place, but they are continuing with our home delivery service to local areas. “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have had throughout lockdown with the community making use of our home delivery service and will continue to offer this service whilever it remains logistically possible for us,” said John Gill. “Alongside our core range of ales being available, we have now reinstated the Seasonal Ale calendar, with our Farmers Cherry Beer now available in cask and five-litre mini kegs. St Luke’s need you St Luke’s Hospice has launched an urgent fundraising appeal as it prepares to maintain its vital work beyond the COVID19 pandemic. The charity has maintained its core patient care services to the people of Sheffield throughout the international coronavirus crisis. But with the St Luke’s shops having closed for more than three months and major fundraising events cancelled, the charity’s finances have been badly hit. The charity’s new fundraising campaign points out that a £6 a month donation could contribute to nutritionally balanced food packages that are prepared and delivered to patients at home who are perhaps shielding or unable to cook for themselves. Stones Bitter is back Molson Coors Beverage Company is partnering with True North Brew Co. to allow the Sheffield-based brewery to produce Stones Bitter by cask. Officially launching on 3rd September, the iconic bitter will be brewed based on specifications derived from the recipe that helped Stones become the highest selling bitter in the UK during the 60s and 70s. First brewed in Sheffield at the Cannon Brewery, the beloved bitter will make its triumphant return to the steel city this spring. Head brewer at True North Brew Co, Dean Hollingworth said “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a while so we were excited when Molson Coors gave us the thumbs up. “We want to do it right so we’re going all out to make sure the recipe is as close as it was back in the bitter’s glory days. We’ll be using a traditional cask recipe with Challenger and Goldings hops and the original Stones yeast strain, kindly given to us by Molson Coors. We’re even going as far as recreating the water profile that was used at the time.”

Schoolboy Mason takes on miles for Barnsley Hospice A South Yorkshire schoolboy is running and cycling 99 miles to raise £99 for Barnsley Hospice. Mason Coles, aged 11, has taken on the charity’s summer fundraising challenge to raise urgently needed money following a huge drop in income due to coronavirus. Inspired by the iconic British ice cream, the hospice has invited supporters to take on a challenge incorporating the number 99. Mason, who lives in Athersley, aims to raise £99 by clocking up 99 miles on his bike or on the run before he goes back to school in September. His 99-mile fundraiser is on top of his usual weekly sporting activities of boxing, parkour (free running), football and goalkeeper training. Mason’s dad Gavin Coles, a long-time supporter of Barnsley Hospice, said: “Mason is always on the go anyway, but he really wanted to do something extra to raise funds for the hospice this summer when all its usual fundraising has taken such a hard knock. The hospice looked after his great grandma a few years ago and they were really great with her. As a family we think they deserve all our support.” Barnsley Hospice launched the ‘99 challenge’ as part of its Save Our Summer campaign, appealing for extra support after many of its fundraising events were cancelled due to coronavirus and its charity shops were temporarily closed.The hospice is still down around £2,300 per day on its usual income. Barnsley Hospice fundraising manager Sam Silverwood said: “Mason seems to be a very busy and active young man, and it’s great that he is taking the time to squeeze in a 99 challenge for us this summer. The money he raises will make a big difference at this difficult time and we really appreciate the ongoing support from him and his family.”
