The nominations for the 2024 Westside Restaurant &

fter three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.

This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.

Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It

well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch. When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local

restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.

One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.

Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2024 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

Young Chef of the Year

Do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging another Young Chef of the Year 2024.

will be overseen by Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader of Catering and Hospitality, who will be assembling a panel of expert judges.

The competition is open to all North Derbyshire region and all chefs must be under the age of 23 on 1 August 2024.

Last year’s competing chefs were Charlie Downham, Oska Ready of DN1 Delicatessen & Dining, Max Heath of the Wortley Arms and Ashish Anand of The George, Hathersage.

Charlie triumphed on that occasion and joins an illustrious list of previous that also includes Chris Parker, who won the competition twice, as well as Lewis Platts, Dave Cockerill and Darren Utley.

ward-winning independent school, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Gold Award from Artsmark, who are accredited by Arts Council England. Artsmark offer the only creative quality standard for schools and to achieve the award, QE had to develop their arts and cultural provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum.

On receiving the award, Helen Stephenson, Head of Creative Arts at QE said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving our Gold Artsmark Award. We are committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education and are looking forward to growing our provision alongside Artsmark.”

Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive of the Arts Council, said: “I would like to

congratulate Queen Ethelburga’s on their Artsmark Award. Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that through offering a broad, ambitious and creative curriculum, young people have the opportunity to develop character and resilience, increasing their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with them through to adult life.”

The school offers an ambitious provision of over 30 courses across art and design, music, drama and dance with numerous opportunities throughout the year to perform and compete in individual and team disciplines. With an impressive 39 per cent of their students choosing to pursue Creative Arts subjects for GCSE, BTEC, or A Level in 2023-24, it is perhaps no surprise that QE regularly achieves recognition in national competitions.

In 2023 alone, students achieved a win,

runner up, and a highly commended in the ISA Arts Young Musician Competition, two Competition, a win in the ISA Shakespeare the ISA Musical Theatre Competition, and a win in the ISA Band Competition. And in creative arts, QE students enjoyed wins in the ISA National Art competition for KS5 3D Design (2023), KS4 Sketchbook (2023), and KS5 Photography (2022 and 2023) as well as regional success in 2023 with ISA Northern Arts wins for KS5 2D Art, KS4 3D Design, KS4 Photography, and KS5 Textiles.
