ewly-opened on Townhead Road in Dore, Dales & Peaks is an independent, family-owned estate agency launched by Sarah and John Currey in 2006. This new office joins existing locations in Chesterfield and Matlock and serves this south-west corner of the city as well as the Peak District. Sarah and John’s aim was, and still is, to offer a personal level of service expected by a family-owned business, alongside a professional approach backed up by years of experience within the property and finance sector. Dales & Peaks started out as a letting agent and quickly became one of the leading agents locally, representing some of Chesterfield’s most iconic developments, such as Bradbury Place, Belmont Park and Piccadilly Heights.

Son Tom joined the business in 2016 to develop the sales division, rebrand the company and raise their game on marketing and exposure. With a modern approach to marketing and a strong eye on the company’s personal and professional ethos, sales are growing drastically. Dales & Peaks was the first estate agent in the north to introduce 3D tours as well as professional photography as standard, although the latter has become more common across the industry. Tom oversaw a big move into social media – you’ll find them on Facebook and Instagram – which helped to enhance their services even further.

"Buoyant markets in both 2020 and 2021 have created strong momentum going into 2022," added Tom. GENEVIEVE HOLDSWORTH HAS CONTINUED THE FINE WORK HER MUM STARTED 35 YEARS AGO. RICHARD ABBEY SPOKE TO THE ARTISAN SWEET MAKER. comparison to Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka is perhaps unfair but you can’t deny that there are interesting and amazing things happening in a ‘factory’ in Bakewell.

The said factory is on the Deepdale Business Park and is home to Holdsworth Chocolates, makers of beautiful hand-made luxury chocolates that are sold the world over. Their range of creams, truffles, caramels and pralines are made and packaged on site in the heart of the Peak District and are the perfect gift for Easter.

And you don’t need a golden ticket to get your hands on some.

Adopting the Willy Wonka role, if you’ll let me indulge you, is Genevieve Holdsworth but the true innovator was her mum, Barbara, who started the business 35 years ago. Taking over in 2002, Genevieve has continued the fine work her mum started and taken the brand from small-batch chocolates to a globally-recognised brand.

Barbara was driven by a passion for chocolate with a firm belief that a market existed for a British handcrafted product. She began to blend the best possible ingredients from around the world in order to realise her dream. These unique recipes, made

to exacting standards, created an exquisite range of world-class chocolates that are now sold in some of the finest stores and food halls around the country, including Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis.

After ten years, Barbara decided to take a step back and daughter Genevieve took over. It was at this time that Holdsworth Chocolates started to look further afield and began to export globally. This in turn led to a move into a new purpose-built facility in Bakewell - their current home.

Although Barbara retired some years ago, the making process has changed very little. The chocolates are still hand-rolled and shaped and then carefully hand-picked and packed into beautifully-made designer boxes.

We spoke to Genevieve to find out more.

How and when did Holdsworth Chocolates open?

Holdsworth Chocolates opened in March 1987. It was the dream of Barbara Holdsworth to set up a business making the best quality, handmade chocolates using only the finest ingredients available and packaged beautifully.

Where are your chocolates made and how?

All our chocolates are made in our facility in Bakewell in the heart of the Peak District. We make an assortment of handmade and finished creams, ganache truffles, caramels and pralines.

In order to create our ganache centres, creams or pralines, we blend together finest ingredients from around the world to create including sweet cream butter, fondants and many different natural paste flavours together with a single origin

Get rid of weeds As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to become more alive again.You might start to notice the dreaded weeds that were hiding under snow and frost. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Preparing soil This step is crucial before your planting endeavours begin. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and aged manure is the best way to prepare your soil, ensuring that it is as fertile as possible.

Popular flower varieties to grow While preparing your garden for the spring is essential, why not prep for summer too by ensuring that your garden is colourful in time for the warmest months?

Daffodils

★ They come in a variety of colours: orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. ★ They also need full sun and welldrained soil to survive.

Hyacinths

Popular vegetables and fruit to grow in your garden With the pandemic causing everyone to spend time a lot of time at home, more and more people have started to use this extra time to hone their gardening skills and grow their own food. If you’re thinking of giving it a go this spring, April is the perfect time to get started as it gives your fruit and veg plenty of time to grow. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables.

Veg Carrots

★ Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. ★ If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. ★ Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. ★ Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot flies, which can lay eggs.

Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this.

Cucumbers

★ Best grown in a greenhouse but can

be grown outdoors in a sheltered and warm area. ★ If growing in a greenhouse, you must water little and often to keep the potting compost or soil evenly moist. ★ You can train the main stem up a vertical wire or cane by pinching out the growing point when it reaches the greenhouse roof. ★ It’s important to use sticky traps, to catch whiteflies from excreting ‘honeydew’ over the plant.

Lettuce

★ Lettuce is seen as one of the easier vegetables to grow and can be sown throughout the year if it is protected against the cold. ★ Once the young plants have grown, they can be thinned out and added to salads, or you can wait for the firm heart to form. ★ Snails and slugs are a common problem for growing lettuce but can be controlled through eggshell barriers, copper tape, and biocontrols.

Fruit Citrus

★ While limes and grapefruits might not survive a British summer, lemons and kumquats are a gardener’s favourite. ★ These can be grown outdoors in the summer in pots, and need regular feeding and watering. ★ Once full grown, they can be left on the tree until needed.

Tomatoes

★ Tomatoes are ideal for growing in containers, either outdoors in a sunny spot, or in a greenhouse. ★ They need to be sowed in early spring and are widely available from garden centres. ★ After initially potting a few together in a small pot, you will need to move them to individual pots. ★ Regular and consistent watering is crucial to avoid blossom end rot and tomato splitting which may result in mould.

Potatoes

★ After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ★ ‘Earthing up’ is essential, it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.

Strawberries

★ Strawberries are perfect to grow if you are tight on space, as they grow in containers, and even in hanging baskets. ★ They need planting in early spring with a high potassium general fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4. ★ If squirrels or birds are a problem, protect fruit with a wire mesh or a net. www.sheffieldvibe.com 45

Burning Man comes to Chatsworth Huge sculptures from Burning Man, held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, USA will be making their UK debut at Chatsworth this spring at an ambitious and free-to-access exhibition in the Derbyshire estate’s parkland.

Radical Horizons: The Art of Burning Man at Chatsworth is a large-scale exhibition in the publicly accessible 1,000 acre park surrounding the house, which sees 12 monumental sculptures from Burning Man, going on display in the UK for the first time from 9 April to 1 October.

Chatsworth and Burning Man were introduced by Sotheby’s, who saw a synergy between the two organisations in their commitments to creativity and community.

The exhibition features eight existing sculptures and four works built on site, including three new participatory sculptures that will be created in the parkland with the help of visitors and local community groups over the course of the year, mirroring the build process at Burning Man that sees teams of volunteers gathering in the desert to create new artworks.

Free to access and enjoy for all, the exhibition also benefits from a dedicated engagement programme working with communities of people who generally find Chatsworth hard to access, offering activities designed to leave a legacy of creative possibility and new connections with people.

Running friends swap Derbyshire Peaks for Saharan heat

They’re used to running in the blustery Peak District but these friends changed the splendour of Derbyshire’s hills for the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert.

Richard Conroy, the CEO of Yorkshire property developer Conroy Brook/Ben Bailey Group, joined Dan Kirby of tech company The Tech Dept and Darren Robinson of the University of Sheffield for the gruelling 250km Marathon des Sables.

The trio, who all live in the Peak District village of Baslow, are raising money for Kids Out, the charity that provides over 70,000 disadvantaged UK children a year with fun days out and toy boxes.

Launched 35 years ago, the Marathon des Sables is described as the toughest footrace on earth and is made up of six marathons over six days, taking competitors into the searing temperatures of the Sahara. And the toughest session of all will be the “long day” where competitors are expected to complete 80km in one go.

“With temperatures of up to 56 degrees, you could say it gets quite warm,” said Richard. “You have to carry all your own food and equipment for the week, though water is provided, and you sleep out every night in traditional communal goat hair berber bivouacs. There are no showers or running water and don’t even ask about the toilets or the insects that include camel spiders, snakes and scorpions.”

Stuart Yates from Brimington, takes up the role at the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) after first joining the organisation almost 40 years ago.

He said: “I believe that if you join something, you should get involved – you get out what you put in. When I was working for a man who was National President of the PDA, it made me think that maybe one day, I could be like him.

“It took me over 30 years from joining up to make it to National President, and in that time I have won several industry awards and given the opening address at the PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards, I’ve travelled to Germany with the Association, been invited to take a position as Royal Decorator, was sponsored by Dulux to decorate a school refectory in India and served as a judge at the Apprentice Paperhanger of the Year competition.

“I’m proud to support the sole trader and small business members of the PDA on the Management Board.”
