DRONFIELD

Field of dreams LUCY JAMES TURNS OUR FOCUS ON TO A TOWN RECENTLY VOTED ONE OF THE TOP TEN PLACES TO LIVE IN ENGLAND. et midway in the valley of the River Drone, between Chesterfield and Sheffield sits the town of Dronfield, a rapidly growing market town with remarkable reviews. In recent years, The Royal Mail and the Centre for Economics and Business Research named the North East Derbyshire town in their list of top ten places to live in England. The list was created after studying areas in England and ranking them based on a range of factors including house prices, employment levels, schools, and green spaces. If this isn’t enough to persuade you that Dronfield is the perfect town, then perhaps what’s to follow will. The average price for a property in Dronfield is £269,058 which is just above the national average and is not bad for a town which is located just three miles away from the boarder of the Peak District, and six miles away from Sheffield. With city life to the north and country life to the west, Dronfield really does have the best of both worlds and from numerous points in and around the town there are stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making Dronfield a lovely place to live for those who enjoy green spaces.

What is there? Dronfield has an industrial history with it being famous for coal mining as well as the wool trade, soap production, engineering and steel making like its neighbouring town Sheffield. The town is still known for its range of manufacturing firms operating today. As well as manufacturing firms, the town is packed full of takeaway shops,

pubs, restaurants, charity shops and a range of different supermarkets, residents of Dronfield have everything they need on their doorsteps, and in the unlikely chance that the town is missing something, Sheffield city is only a 17minute drive away. The town is perfect for families with there being a good variety of nurseries, primary schools, and secondary schools nearby. There is a doctor’s surgery close to the town centre as well as a health centre, library, parks with children’s play areas, gyms, and a swimming pool. Unlike a lot of towns, Dronfield has a unique landmark called the Peel Monument. The monument can be found in the town centre on High Street and was built in 1854 as a tribute to the former Prime Minister, Robert Peel, commemorating his repeal of the 1846 Corn Laws. The monument attracts tourists on a daily basis with it being the most photographed and sketched part of Dronfield.

THERE’S NO NEED TO FEEL BLUE, DRONFEST IS ROCKING BACK TO CLIFFE PARK THIS SUMMER – AND IT’S BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE. s far as 21st birthdays go, Dronfest’s was a bit of a disappointment. As a result of the ongoing Covid pandemic, plans for their milestone celebration last year had to be put on hold. But, there’s good news for this year’s event. After months of uncertainty, organiser John Aspinall has confirmed that Dronfest 2021 will go ahead in Cliffe Park on 7 August. “Since the first event in 1999, last year (2020) was only the second time it has been cancelled and we are hoping that this year’s festival will give the community of Dronfield one big party,” said John. The Cabronitas will be bringing proceedings to a close and will be supported by crowd-

pleasers Boy on a Dolphin, Jungle Lion and Clear Vinyl. Further support comes from Ribeye, The Silk Road, Soul Battalion and Blast Lane. And there’s more, as John explains: “The day isn’t just about the music. There will be a collection of inflatables for the children, a treasure hunt and plenty of food stalls, all reasonably Julian Jones (left)

priced, to whet your appetite. “The bar is being manned by another community fundraiser, Drone Valley Brewery, who also look to support local initiatives.” Dronfest began in rather extravagant circumstances on 12 June 1999. Never one to do things by half, John made the decision to host a big party to celebrate

his 25 years of marriage to wife Jackie. So, pulling together help from friends and family, he arranged for a stage to be built on the town’s football ground, organised several bands to play, and handed out 1,500 invites. It was that same year that John had also lost one of his good friends, Kenny Mulcrone, to Motor Neurone Disease so on the day of the event, buckets were sent around collecting donations for the charity and raised approximately £1,000. That was meant to be the end of it but having received so many positive comments, he decided to do it all again and The Dronfield Charity Music Festival was born. The focus very quickly shifted towards staging a community festival which would provide a platform for showcasing the abundance of talent in the area, whilst also raising funds for many worthy charities and groups. To date, and after a name change to Dronfest in 2014, it has now raised in excess of £100,000. Over the years there have been many

changes of venue to accommodate a growing audience, to provide a second stage, and to provide numerous activities for the whole family. Cliffe Park now provides the perfect setting. “The focus of Dronfest has always remained the same and is about three things,” explains John. “One, giving local bands an opportunity to play on a bigger stage. Two, raising funds for charities and community groups, and three, creating a wonderful family atmosphere for all age groups where people can eat, drink and have loads of fun with their families and friends.” In recognition of the tough times families have endured over the past 18 months, tickets have been frozen at early bird prices and with each paying adult (£15.40), a child can go free, meaning a family of four can attend for just £30.80.

Over 65s are priced £11 and additional child tickets are £5.50. To find out more, or to purchase tickets, email info@dronfest.co.uk or visit www.dronfest.co.uk

1335-1415 Soul Battalion The Soul Battalion are a gutsy Sheffield based nine-piece soul covers band featuring blazing brass, a driving rhythm section, and soaring male and female lead vocals. The band is high energy and love to entertain and have their audiences on their feet from the very first beat playing classics from Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, The Commitments, Tina Turner and many more. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Soulbattalion

1605-1645 Paul Fletcher & The Dukes Born in Sheffield, Paul Fletcher has been navigating his city’s music scene for as long as he can remember. A singer, songwriter, and producer, Paul spent two years as lead song writer and guitarist with the indie band Blind Drivers, before leaving to concentrate on production duties and writing projects for a number of established pop acts, which has led to several tracks breaking into the Top 40 UK charts. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/paulfletcherandthedukes/

1445-1535 Boy on a Dolphin The rock quartet fronted by singer/songwriter John Reilly play uplifting music with a sound all of their own. Also featuring Pete Hiley on Spanish and electric guitar, Andy Needham on bass and Darren Ford on drums. How do you best describe them? Ok, that’s not easy, acoustic based – yes. African rhythms – yes. Melodic, er definitely. Warm, moving, intimate, personal, yes! They have an uncanny way of making you feel that a song is directed at you personally. 1825-1925 Jungle Lion If you’re not already familiar with them, they’re a 12-piece SKA and reggae band based in Sheffield, boasting six horns and five vocals, with the kind of sound and stage presence that’s all too rare these days. They play a wide range of material, from popular classics by artists like The Specials, Bob Marley, Madness and Bad Manners to hidden gems and heavily customised obscurities. They are all about good times, party atmosphere and lots of dancing… Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Jungle-Lion181554815236537/

2100-2140 Clear Vinyl Since 2019 when Clear Vinyl first emerged, it’s been somewhat of a tumultuous ride. In the face of trauma, the band came together and in a pledge to face their feelings created some of their most personal efforts to date. As artists often do, they took stock and evolved to allow for more distinctive and honest lyrics. With such change, the band became as much about throwing out a hand of friendship as they did about creating a raucous atmosphere. Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ClearVinylMusic

2000-2040 The Silk Road With an infectious blend of folk rock, gritty passionate lyrics, and foot stomping Celtic jigs and reels, The Silk Road’s compositions are all original, fresh and familiar at the same time, with addictive melodies, soaring fiddle and guitar solos and chest thumping drums and bass. The band consists of Tich Vango (lead vocals), Andy ‘Rosie’ Heath (lead and rhythm guitar), Neil Jones (drums), Jamie Burney (fiddle) and Shaun Haley (bass). Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheSilkRoadOOC

2200-2300 The Cabronitas Gigging up and down the country for the last four years, The Cabronitas are a tight, hardworking group hailing from North East Derbyshire. With a distinctive and unique sound, their eclectic influences range from Bowie to Kings of Leon and James to Royal Blood; all of which can be heard in their passionately renditioned covers, providing a perfect foil to their own staple, wittily written and rousing original efforts. Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Using the revolutionary 365 insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, Sagars 365 can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use 365 days a year. According to a Survey carried out by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the average conservatory owner uses an extra 4,800 kWh per annum. Which at 15.5p pkw equates to £744 per year! The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. All work is completed in a day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep everyone safe. And it costs less than you would think - prices include fitting,VAT, and a 10 year guarantee. With 25% off for a limited time, the cost of a typical 3x3m conservatory is just £1,699. Don't miss out, call us for a quote today! Interest free credit available over 10 months (subject to approval). Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

TRUSTPILOT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS: “What can I say apart from excellent. They arrived on time, did an excellent job, when finished left it as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

"Nothing was too much trouble for them!" " Having spent some time sourcing a kitchen company, we decided to take a look at Dave Stone Design. From the moment we set foot into the showroom, everyone we met was incredibly helpful. Dan came up with a number of ideas to maximise the space and create the dream kitchen for us. Logistically, it was not easy. The proposed project involved taking out the corner of our house, knocking down our old garage, as well as two walls, and completely removing a utility room and shower. The old garage had a very sizeable concrete roof, so you can imagine what taking that down involved! It also involved building an extension from scratch. The way Dan project-managed the operation was, quite simply, amazing. Every member of the team was so much in tune with each other, that the work was synchronised seamlessly. Having Dan and his team around was like having family in the house. In fact, we missed them when they had completed the job! We now have a beautiful new kitchen with a downdraft induction hob, a composite undermounted sink, a swan-neck tap, a combi microwave oven, a warming drawer, two dual-cook-flex Samsung ovens, LED lighting, a vaulted ceiling, a garnet granite worktop, pop-up sockets and an island kitchen with considerable storage. Dan and his team also installed beautiful LVT flooring and bi-fold patio doors leading on to the garden. The design has created a superb 'Mediterranean feel' - especially with the white rendered wall in the garden. Simply fantastic. We would whole-heartedly recommend!" Michelle and Marcus Adams, Dore

Do the Strand LONDON WAS CALLING TO RICHARD ABBEY WHO FOUND THE PERFECT BASE FROM WHICH TO EXPLORE ON A RECENT VISIT TO THE CAPITAL. Image © Photos.London

tepping off the train at King’s Cross you could sense almost immediately that London has not quite returned to ‘normal’. Regardless of the time of day you expect to walk into a packed concourse before hustling your way to the tube to get to wherever you need to go, but there was none of that. It was much more sedate, relaxed even. Of course this is not necessarily a bad thing and makes it a great time to explore the capital before the long haul flights begin to disembark onto its streets once again. A late morning tube ride to Covent Garden was both short and quiet and on, exiting the station, full of surprises. Again it was distinctly less busy and seems to have undergone a bit of a transformation since my last visit. The market is still the hub (the street performers are still there) but the streets around this seem to have been elevated to another level. Many of them have

S

been pedestrianised while garlands of flowers and lights suspended across these thoroughfares have added character and charm. Bars, restaurants and cafes now spill out on to walkways and squares to create a continental style atmosphere and with the addition of new shopping and dining areas such as The Yards and the Seven Dials Market, Covent Garden feels alive once again. The base for our short stay was just a stone’s throw from Covent Garden and is a landmark itself, being part of the London skyline for over 112 years and

steeped in history and heritage. Strand Palace has recently undergone a two-year multimillion-pound refurbishment that has seen the renovation of all 785 bedrooms, public areas, and a brand-new restaurant and bar refurbished with a modern art-deco inspired interior design. We stayed in two deluxe king rooms, linked by an adjoining door, which offered plenty of space for the four of us as well as comforts including Hypnos mattresses, air conditioning, free high speed wi-fi, Nespresso® coffee machine, complimentary fully stocked minibar and

large HD TV. It was the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the capital. Breakfast was included in our stay and was served each morning in the Haxells Restaurant & Bar. There was a good choice of hot and cold food as well as fruit juices, tea and coffee - my children particularly enjoyed the American-style pancakes lavishly smothered in maple syrup. Haxells is also open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with a passion for provenance and a focus on impeccably sourced, top-quality ingredients. The menu is full of modern British dishes such as the Haxells burger, superfood salad, Hawaiian salmon poke bowl and to finish, chocolate cake with honeycomb ice cream. As comfortable as it is inside, it’s the location that really sells Strand Palace with many of the capital’s world-famous sights and attractions, including St. Paul’s Cathedral,Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, and the River Thames, on its doorstep. You’re also in the heart of theatreland and Soho, home to some of the London’s hottest nightlife spots, is less

than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. We’d pre-booked tickets for the lastminute.com London Eye and made the most of the glorious weather with a gentle stroll through Trafalgar Square, St James Park and Parliament Square before crossing Westminster Bridge to its location on the Southbank. Entry was well organised (and safe) as you’d expect and after a short queue we climbed to a height of 135m for unrivalled views over the city. Each pod had limited numbers we shared with one other family - so there was plenty of room to distance but still enjoy the sights without getting in each other’s way. After hitting the heights we enjoyed a long stroll down the Southbank, which has developed into a real foodie destination. There are shipping containers, vans and trucks, all with plenty of seating and all serving food and drink, as well as recognised restaurants and cafes. Gabriel’s Wharf, just next to the OXO building, even had a beach bar. We walked on to the Tate Modern before crossing the Thames to St Paul’s Cathedral and back along Fleet

Street and The Strand, via Somerset House, to the hotel. During our stay we also visited the British Museum and the National Gallery, which are both free to enter but, due to Covid restrictions, tickets must be booked in advance. The former, again a short walk from the hotel, is home to two million years of world history and culture and is worth the admission alone for the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, the largest covered square in Europe. Our whistlestop tour of the National Gallery took in paintings from the likes of Johannes Vermeer, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh amongst others. No trip to London is complete without a spot of shopping; Oxford Street and Regent Street cover all bases and were some of the busiest places we visited but again Covent Garden, and particularly the area around Seven Dials, came out on top with a good selection of independent stores as well as some well known high street favourites. On the evidence of this visit, it shows that the return to ‘normal’ is definitely well on it’s way; after almost 18 months of Covid restrictions, our recent family trip was one of our first opportunities to get away and I’ll be honest, it felt fantastic. Prices at the Strand Palace Hotel start from £106 per room, per night. 24-hour golf marathon Three keen golfers, four great courses and one full day to get round them all… that’s what it takes to raise more than £4,000 for a trio of top charities. David Stewart, his brother James and their friend Ben Roberts took on the golfing challenge in memory of David’s wife Jess, who died at St Luke’s earlier this year. Their original intention was to raise £929 to mark Jess’s 929 day battle with breast cancer, with the money to be split between St Luke’s and the two other city charities that supported her, Weston Park Hospital cancer Charity and Macmillan Cancer Support. Up to now, though, they have smashed that original target, raising £4,476 - with that number still rising! The friends started their challenge at 4.50am - just after sunrise - at Stannage Golf Club and then went on to Beauchief Golf Club for a 9am tee off, followed by Dore and Totley Golf Club from 1pm and ending at Abbeydale Golf Club, where they completed their epic session at 8.50pm. There’s still time to support David, James and Ben - simply visit justgiving.com/team/theback9bandits

Digital high street project The online revolution has been a key feature of the pandemic – and now small and microbusinesses in Chesterfield can embrace these digital trends in an innovative new support scheme. The Chesterfield Digital High Street project helps those reliant on bricks and mortar to transition into an online world by creating highly visible e-commerce websites equipped with the latest forms of payment, such as Apply Pay and Google Pay, and modern shopping concepts like “click and collect”. Funded by Chesterfield Borough Council and delivered in partnership by East Midlands Chamber, it aims to support small outfits in sectors such as retail, hospitality and leisure, which have been hit hardest by lockdown restrictions, to become more resilient. The support available to businesses via the programme includes access to a Digital High Street adviser with specific e-commerce and online skills, who will work intensively with at least 120 businesses to help them develop and maintain their new or existing digital presence. They will also be able to attend dedicated webinars, delivered outside working hours, and use marketing resources for free. Grants of £2,200 – covering 100 per cent of costs – will also be awarded to 50 of these businesses to help them set up an e-commerce website that is search engine optimised, with the package also including web hosting provision for a year and access to ongoing digital training. Applications can now be made for the Chesterfield Digital High Street project at www.emc-dnl.co.uk/chesterfielddigital-high-street
