The perfect balance A DESIRABLE PROXIMITY TO THE COUNTRYSIDE IS COMBINED WITH THE CONVENIENCE OF A TOWN IN DRONFIELD. BY LOUISA HINKS. ust three miles from the Peak district, within the valley of the River Drone, sits the historical town of Dronfield, North East Derbyshire. Dronfield was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) and it’s an area made beautiful by rivers, streams and woodlands – attributes which made it an ideal market town back in 1662 when King Charles II first gave his permission for a market to be held there. The name Dronfield originates from the fact that when people first settled in Dronfield, they noticed the number of drones (male bees) that were native to the area, and that gathered around the town’s river, later to be named the River Drone. The town suffered greatly during the reign of King William I as part of his ‘harrying of the north’ campaigns following their participation in insurrection and non-cooperation during the 11th century Norman Conquest. Dronfield is a hub of various sites of historical interest, including a monument which may be considered quite peculiar by many unaware of its history – the Peel monument. This monument pays tribute to former UK Prime Minister, Robert Peel, for his importance in repealing the Corn Laws in 1846. The repeal of the Corn Laws was a significant turning point in British history as their repeal promoted free trade and helped to lower food prices. This was considered a progressive policy move that benefitted the poorest people struggling to feed their families, especially amidst the Irish Potato Famine which claimed so many lives at this time. The monument, built in 1854 out of gritstone, is located on High Street. The structure housed the first public water pump in the town, another representation of Peel’s social development policies. Today, Dronfield is considered one of the places in the UK that enjoys the best work-life balance. Due to its proximity to the Peak District, Dronfield is perfect for walking and other outdoor activities. The nearby routes vary in difficulty and are suitable for hiking, trail running and mountain biking. In and around Dronfield there are many beautiful woodlands for people to

explore nature. Kitchen Wood has mainly ash and sycamore trees but also oak rowan birch and alder. When in season, its lit up with bluebells and wood sorrel. Frith Wood is another woodland that crosses into Dronfield. This area is a mixed woodland, with many different flora and fauna, including frogs and newts that can be spotted in the pond.
The Dronfield Players are a small amateur theatre group that was founded in 1943. The Players started up as a means of wartime entertainment and they now perform a range of different plays every few months at Dronfield Civic Centre. In May of this year, one of their team went on to feature in an episode of the TV show Gentleman Jack. The Players’ next play, Cheshire Cats, will be showing in November of this year. The Home of Football Stadium, Sheffield FC’s football ground, is located in Dronfield. Sheffield FC is considered by FIFA as the oldest existing football club in the world; they hosted the world’s oldest cup competition, the Youdan Cup, a trophy that today would be worth £100,000. Situated in the town are many quaint and cosy pubs including the Green Dragon Inn, The Jolly Farmer and the Victoria. The Green Dragon Inn was once the hall of the chantry priest and the home of the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary, established in the mid 14th century. The name however, dates back to 1547 when the building became an inn. It’s now one of the most popular pubs in Dronfield and still has its traditional wood burning fire and a wide selection of ales.

The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – opened in 2020 on Penistone Road, Sheffield. It’s an ultra-modern and exciting venue with a 500-seater capacity, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 31 October, looks like being bigger and better than ever. Forget-me-not GRAYSONS SUPPORTS ASHGATE HOSPICE’S APPEAL AT RENISHAW HALL. raysons is delighted to have sponsored Ashgate Hospice’s Forget-Me-Not Appeal once again this year. Graysons’ partners and staff joined volunteers from Ashgate Hospice at the stunning display of limited edition, brightly painted stainless steel flowers in the beautiful grounds of Renishaw Hall from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 and Wednesday 22 to Sunday 26 June. Visitors from around the North Derbyshire region – and beyond – enjoyed the good weather when they visited the grounds to see the 1,850 flowers on display in the beautiful grounds of Renishaw Hall. Flower donations are made by family and friends as a memory or celebration of those who have died – irrespective of whether they were helped by Ashgate Hospice. Those who made donation for the flowers, which were made by the British Ironwork Centre, were delighted to be able to take them home after their display at Renishaw Hall. The Forget-Me-Not Appeal is one of the hospice’s newest ventures and is in its

second year. Last year’s event, which was also sponsored by Graysons, raised an incredible £117,300 for the hospice, and it appears that this year’s event will be very successful too. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We are honoured to sponsor the hospice’s unique Forget-MeNot Appeal and to support the exceptional care provided by the hospice for people in the North Derbyshire region. ollowing in his father’s footsteps was not always on the agenda for Stephen Bisby when he left school in 1981. But circumstances intervened and his career path became a familiar one - and he’s never looked back. His father, Tony, originally worked for the family cutlery business - AH Bisby & Company Ltd - before branching out into making stainless steel jewellery in the 1960s. When that fashion started to lose its appeal he tried his hand at working with silver, eventually opening Colante in 1974 on Hunter House Road, Sheffield. Stephen left school at a time of riots and rising unemployment - almost 6,000 people were joining the dole queue daily in 1981. “Jobs were hard to come by an dad said I could work with him if I wanted. It seemed like a good idea,” he recalls. “I started to learn from him and also attended a jewellery school at Granville College.” The father and son team eventually outgrew their premises and relocated to Ridgeway Craft Centre, which was familiar to Tony as he had lived

in the area up to the age of 16. When he sadly passed away, Stephen took ownership of the business and still offers the same personal service and good quality jewellery. “I ended up being at Ridgeway for 20 years,” he said. “I left the craft centre to be able to work my own hours and the building on the High Street came available at auction, which was ideal. I have now been open here for 12 years.” Indeed, Colante Jewellery is now housed in a glorious Grade II-listed cottage on Dronfield’s High Street, just
opposite the library. In his showroomcum-workshop Stephen offers all the services you would expect from a jeweller - polishing, cleaning, re-sizing, watch repairs and batteries - but also specialises in making his own jewellery. A bespoke design is perfect if you’re struggling to find the perfect piece. Stephen can work with you to design unique pieces in any precious metal using a fabulous assortment of precious or semi-precious gemstones. He will begin the process by taking measurements and will let you choose

from a wide selection of over 100 designs. Any piece can be completely modified to make it completely personal for you. “I make jewellery in sterling silver, gold or platinum and also use faceted gemstones, from garnets to diamonds,” said Stephen. Stephen still makes jewellery using the ‘lost wax casting’ technique, something he learned from his father. These templates are used to make jewellery in a variety of metals and can be used more than once. Nothing is thrown away Stephen has drawers full of old castings that can be used again if a customer requires it. His cluttered workshop is a stark contrast to the clean, contemporary space that is the showroom but everything has its place. His workbench is littered with tools of all shapes and sizes and Stephen has even devised his own unique instruments to enable him to do his work more efficiently.Whether that’s repurposing a broom handle or using a paperclip to hold a piece of jewellery in place, Stephen is always looking for new ways to learn and evolve his business to the benefit of his customers. Colante Jewellery still remains very much a family business - Stephen’s mum is still involved with the book-keeping and his wife Sarah helps with ideas and shop decoration. Stephen has two sons too but is unsure if they’ll follow in his footsteps, as he did his fathers. “They’re interested but I don’t think it will be their career,” he said. “I want them to find their own path, find something they’re passionate about. Whether that brings them back to me, who knows.”
Away from the jewellery business, Stephen is a huge motorcycle enthusiast and competes in classic motorcycle trials, something he has done since 1979. Again, it was something that came from his father. “My dad competed in trials in the 1950s and sixties and I loved to look at his photos,” recalls Stephen. “When I was 15 he bought me a Yamaha TY125cc then, two bikes later, I rode a Spanish Ossa 250cc, which I had for 14 months. “In 1991 I bought another Ossa and started classic trials as well as modern trials but gave up with modern bikes and just stuck to the old Ossa. I usually ride about once or twice a month in local events but also in a national championship. My son is starting to learn to ride but he also marshals for us at some events.” Stephen has even managed to combine
his two passions, creating a design of a MotoX motorcycle which he has cufflinks and also on a tie bar. It’s just another example of the expertise Stephen can employ in creating truly unique pieces of jewellery. Take the first steps to success DR GRACE HULA USED HER OWN PERSONAL WEIGHT LOSS EXPERIENCE TO CREATE A NEW DIET REGIME THAT IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST AND KEEP IT OFF TOO. After successfully completing her doctorate in 1996, Dr Hula attained a research associate position at the University of Bristol. The research group then relocated to Sheffield in 2000. She returned to clinical practice in 2003 and then did GP training at the University of Sheffield. “I love general practice due to its holistic approach and work flexibility,” comments Grace. “As a GP you see a variety of cases and that keeps you interested in learning. I also love the way one gets to know families and interact at family and friendship level with patients.” Dr Hula continued her work as a GP but her experience with diabetes pushed her into exploring aesthetic medicine and ultimately how she can help people best achieve their weight loss goals. She set up G&M Healthcare Ltd just under ten years ago with the aim of making her patients feel better about themselves, whether that’s through skin or body treatments or a lifestyle-changing diet regime. After experiencing the success of Alizonne Therapy first-hand, she decided to take things one-step further and devised her own called MediSculpt Therapy, a nonsurgical, medically supervised rapid weight loss program. “I knew I could take what I learnt from Alizonne Therapy and make it a better and more suitable product,” she explains. “I was tired of seeing obese patients as a GP and asking them to lose weight whilst prescribing more and more medications for chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and high cholesterol when I knew that most of
these conditions could be reversed by losing weight in a healthy manner. “My senior therapist Sarah O’Brien was instrumental in helping me to devise MediSculpt Therapy which is safe, efficient and rapid and the weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check blood pressure, metabolic rate and do blood tests, on a regular basis.” The diet consists of five proteinbased meals and one snack a day for seven days a week. These filling meals are delivered by sachet of which each contains approximately 100Kcal. These can be supplemented by some fruit, vegetables and one tablespoon of olive oil per day, which adds a further 200Kcal, hence the daily total daily calorie intake is between 700-800Kcal. The sachets come in different flavours and include omelettes, pizzas, pasta, milkshakes, chicken nuggets, hot and cold drinks and vegetables and salads daily. For those with special dietary requirements there are also gluten-free and vegetarian selections. As you progress through the nutrition programme, your intake of MediSculpt nutrition is replaced with conventional food in a very specific, controlled and structured way to allow your body to gradually adjust to the various food groups. In addition to the nutritional part of the diet, MediSculpt Therapy also offers two types of body contouring treatments to tone the body. It was while working on a diabetic ward at Northern General Hospital (NGH) during her GP training that she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This proved to be the trigger for her to make an important lifestyle change. “I was an obese single mother of two children and was prescribed metformin tablets, which I took for a year,” she recalls. “I knew from working on a diabetic ward that if I lost weight I could reverse my diabetes to a diet-controlled level. I lost three stones, which was enough to offset my diabetes.“ She has now been medication free for 17 years and her experience has given her the drive to share her success with other people. Dr Hula was born in Uganda as one of 11 children and after contracting malaria aged just six years old, was inspired to pursue a career in medicine. “The doctor was a family friend,” she says. “He examined me and gave me antimalarials and I got better. I was so impressed that I decided that I wanted to become a doctor when I grew up. I have always had a caring nature and that fits in well with a career in medicine.” She obtained her medical degree at Makerere University in Kampala before moving to Sweden in 1989 pursue a doctorate in Neuroscience at the

Speaking to this mature, confident and engaging group of 16 year olds as they entered their last exam, I was aware of all that they have already achieved. Since they joined us in Year 7, they have faced challenges and enjoyed successes together as they have developed into the young adults I see today. My conversations with them have just confirmed how proud I am of them all. If you are the parent or carer of a child in Year 6, who is about to start the journey our Year 11s are just completing, you will be aware how far they have travelled already and you will feel the same pride.You may also be understandably nervous about their transition to secondary school.Your child will enter secondary school as a child and will leave as a young adult. National Lottery cash will restore Birley Spa A £97,170 restoration project is set to see the grounds of Sheffield’s historic Birley Spa Bath House restored to their former glory. Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust were successful in their bid to The National Lottery Heritage Fund which will also include the research and celebration of the importance of the Victorian bathhouse that was originally built for Charles Herbert Pierrepont, 2nd Earl Manvers and the Lord of the Manor of Beighton in 1842. Made possible thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the three-year project aims to open up access to the grounds to a whole new generation of visitors and will train up scores of volunteers to become local history researchers. A Friends of Birley Spa Group was originally formed in 2018 with the aim of working alongside Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust and Sheffield Parks, to look at ways to restore the grounds for community use.

Belmayne renews commmitment Dronfield-based financial planners, Belmayne, are preparing to kick off a new season of support for the area’s young footballers. What’s all the fuss? All eyes are on Volkswagen’s latest addition to its ID range, writes Richard Abbey.
Extreme upgrade Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia and Stelvio ESTREMA models offer top of the range specification with the perfect combination of technical refinement, driving pleasure and sporting luxury. Targeted at driving purists, the ESTREMA builds on the Veloce and is fitted with Alfa Synaptic Dynamic Control (SDC) adaptive suspension and a limited slip differential as standard, adapting to conditions to provide comfort without compromising handling and driving pleasure. The limited slip differential provides stability and high control in all grip conditions, distributing torque and traction even when exiting corners, at high speeds and during acceleration. Both inside and out, carbon fibre and dark painted elements define the sporty look of the ESTREMA. The long-awaited Volkswagen ID. Buzz will launch with a ‘1st Edition’ model alongside the standard Style and Life trims.
