It’s all about individuality very year we see new bridal trends exploding into weddings across the country, whether it be dress styles, table décor or colour palettes. With inspiration from the fashion industry, themes seen on the runway filter into weddings and bring trends for brides to adopt and re-work. With major emphasis in 2022 on individuality, weddings are predicted to become more unique and personal, in both style and design. Bridesmaid dresses were one of the first wedding elements to show individual style and creativity. In colour, style and fabric, 2022’s trends will leave you looking like the best version of yourself, instead of being one in a group dressed identically and traditionally.

E

Mix not Match Bringing your bridesmaid’s sense of identity into their dresses could be the key to a beautifully personal wedding. Seen for years but trending now for 2022/2023 weddings, mix and match dresses are in. Giving your bridesmaids freedom to find their own dress, allows them to feel their most comfortable and confident to support you on your special day. However, the trick to styling the different dresses is cohesion. Following a colour palette is strongly advised to ensure your bridesmaids match and using one colour or shades of one colour would work even better. Alternatively, the dresses would remain a beautiful variation if they were similar styles but with different necklines or length. However much freedom you choose to give your bridesmaids, remember that having one thing in common (colour, neckline, style or length) will tie the dresses beautifully and bring order to your potential mix and match madness.

Bold is Better 2022 epitomises colour, vibrancy and life! After years of Covid negativity and neutral trends resembling our boredom, loud is back.

Pantone was one of the first to announce their colour of the year:Very Peri. The beautiful purple tone is welcomed to this year’s colour palette, alongside moody blues and seasonal greens. Already being styled in or purple... homes and wardrobes, these bold colours are soon to be Or something individual brought to bridal. The perfect colour options for bridesmaid dresses – shades of green – will look gorgeous for mix and match dresses, and if they’re sustainable, even better as the green will resemble this and tie in beautifully. Shades of blue and purple will match well together or can be brought in separately as block colour dresses that contrast the typical white/cream bridal wedding dresses. Regardless of which bold colours you chose to incorporate, if any, the option of joining this vibrant trend is there for inspiration.

Perfect Prints Unsurprisingly, matching this year’s wave of creativity, prints have made a bridal comeback. With the fashion trend of individuality inspiring new prints and styles for a less basic and played out look, weddings are seeing the same pattern. Prints are being used to give a new and unique look for the bridal party, contrasting gorgeously with simple wedding dresses. They can be mixed and matched as suggested above with a colour palette to avoid clashing, or

MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT BRIDESMAID TRENDS FOR 2022.

Go green...

bridesmaid dresses can use the same print with different styles for inclusivity (with different fits catering to different body shapes).

Stop the Stereotypical With the fashion industry finally moving further and further away from stereotypical styles, fits and gendered clothing, women have more freedom in the styles they can wear. Of course, we have always had the option of wearing any clothes (regardless of the gender they were designed for) but it’s hard to feel confident in outfits stereotyped for someone else. Now the world is becoming more progressive, society is helping women feel free in their choice of fit / style, allowing us to move away from the typical tight dress. The perfect example of this is seen in bridesmaids outfits; with the rise in searches for bridal jumpsuits and suits, it’s seeming finally more acceptable to feel comfortable in something other than a dress. www.sheffieldvibe.com 7

‘World class’ service CHANGES ARE AFOOT AT DAVID INMAN OPTICIANS. avid Inman Opticians has started the new year with some positive news - they are now accepting new private and NHS clients. And to help with the increasing demand for their services they have employed Optometrist Emma Niven to work alongside Justin Briddon and James Allen. This welcome news comes after a period that has seen many changes at both the Broomhill and Ecclesall Road stores. James Allen, partner and Optometrist at the Broomhill store, explains more: “The start of the pandemic threw up many challenges for Opticians. Particularly as the majority of traditional equipment was used at such close contact with some parts of the examination still not allowed to be done. We knew we had to adapt. “We completely rethought our eye examinations to take into account the rules and to keep our customers safe. “Out went close contact basic inspections and in came the very latest technology to allow a world class sight test and eye health examination. “The quality and accuracy of our new equipment is incredible, and with a high definition digital record of eye health we can monitor and detect a whole host of eye conditions accurately and safely. The use of hospital grade Optomap and OCT retinal scanners has allowed us to detect and manage many eye conditions over

the past 18 months. The Optomap scan works without drops and gives a high definition retinal image which covers 85 per cent of the eye, which is a 20x wider field than hand held equipment. “We also purchased two R800 units which allows a vision and prescription

check from up to two metres away. The accuracy is incredible and our customers are wowed by the technology used and with most eye exams contact free, they feel very safe.” The enhanced testing comes as standard on private examinations and the comprehensive eye care plan which is £4.95 per month. David Inman Opticians recommend the enhanced testing to everyone; NHS patients have the option of upgrading to the enhanced testing or joining the eyecare plan (please see website for more details.) They also stock the latest frames suitable for all budgets including fully bespoke lens and frame options. Wear it again IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF YOUR WEDDING DRESS BEING STUCK IN A BOX, UPCYCLING CAN GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT SENTIMENTAL IDEAS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important. It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory. Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the

W

18 www.sheffieldvibe.com

fashion industry. With people increasingly realising the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was pictured on the green carpet in an

upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam. Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so. There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

Add a touch of lace

Work of art

To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace, simply fixing lace to a band for a statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.

One easy way to create truly beautiful art out of your dress, is by framing a piece of fabric/dress section. Resulting in a very sentimental piece, you can even stitch (or pay for a professional to stitch) your initials and date on the framed dress section. On a grander and more expensive scale, you could frame your whole gown. Turning your entire dress into a bigger art installation would create a statement piece in any house. There are a select few companies specialising in framing your dress, The Beautiful Frame Company for example, where it can be preserved professionally and very impressively, however you could buy a frame and glass, doing so yourself for much cheaper.

Confetti Fabric repurposed With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration. The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go. Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Dreamy duvet Same but different One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown. Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas). Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/cocktail look. Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.

Small and beautiful Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. If you feel this would be better made through experts, Little Doves online creates some beautiful pieces, or alternatively Infinity Keepsakes have made gorgeous christening dresses alongside other wedding keepsakes. 20 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Turning your wedding dress into a quilt maybe a bigger job than the rest, but will result in such a stunning and personal bed cover. For a simpler idea, you can create a smaller piece for a child in the family, maybe making a beautiful cot sheet. This is easy as you only need to cut a section, hemming for neatness if you desire. However, to make your own bed cover you might need some extra fabric to attach depending on how much space your dress will cover when cut into sections. If you would rather a professional’s touch, many sellers online offer custom, handmade covers/blankets, LoveMoody or Jemdesign567 on Etsy for example.

Wear it well

Picture this

Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies for earrings and cufflinks if you wish to make them to match, preserving your dress forever in gorgeous jewellery. Sellers on Etsy can make these for you if you would prefer; CeciLeibovitz and TreeTownPaper create some stunning pieces.

Covering a photo album is one of the simplest ideas, requiring only glue, scissors and an album. Wedding photos allow the magical memories to live on, capturing you and all your family members at their happiest, the images taken will be cherished forever. So, why not use some spare fabric from your dress to either cover a new album, potentially as a gift, or add sentiment to your current album. As you chose your dress and fabric, of course the piece was beautiful, when adding a section to a book, it in turn will look beautiful, with minimal effort.

Cuddly toys As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy. HandmadeByHenri or ThreadPaperStudio both sell these beautiful custom pieces on Etsy, providing a completely unique and personalised gift.

Bags of style One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress. Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued. As your dress fabric is already gorgeous, using it to make these pieces means they’ll easily look good and bring gorgeous sentiment. The option to embellish is there and patterns/tutorials can be found online for more guidance, alongside examples for inspiration.

Gilt-y pleasure WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO TREAT SOMEONE SPECIAL - OR JUST YOURSELF THESE GORGEOUS PATISSERIE ARE A LITTLE SLICE OF HEAVEN. aris is one of the world’s great cities, filled with high fashion, haute cuisine and some of the world’s most stunning landmarks. And if you’ve been to the French capital, no doubt you’ve walked past one of those gorgeous patisseries where all the stunning cakes are lined up in the windows in the most tempting of fashions. Paired with a good cup of strong coffee, they’re a real indulgent treat. For a real slice of French heaven much closer to home, you can visit Gilt Patisserie, which recently opened on Hickmott Road after just over two years on Abbeydale Road. Owner Rob Wainwright brings over 20 years experience as a pastry chef to the area and his cakes and pastries look – and taste – every bit as good as those you’ll find in Saint-Sulpice or République. In the Hickmott Road shop you’ll find those same tempting window displays as well as fresh coffee, confectionery and traditional French products, from tapenades to marmalades and more. Rob makes modern style Petits gateaux, macarons, confectionery and Viennoiserie (pastries) onsite.

patisserie and want to bring current trend and flavours to Sheffield at the highest standards possible. Hickmott Road joins two of the most popular areas within Sheffield and the area has been well known for quality local food and independent small businesses for sometime now.

What’s your background?

The new premises on Hickmott Road

We caught up with the artisan to find out more. Tell us about Gilt Patisserie?

Gilt is a modern boutique patisserie that specialises in European style products with a French vibe. We product high quality, fresh produce on a daily basis using ingredients from all over the world. We are passionate about the art of

Twenty years or so ago I went to Castle College where I did three-year diploma under Mick Burk and his team. I then worked with some of Sheffield’s better restaurants before moving down to London to work for Yotam Ottolenghi for three years where I worked my way up to one of his head pastry chefs. I trained in Barcelona, France and under William Curley before returning to London to open Nopi with the Ottolenghi team. After four years I moved to Sydney where I worked in some of the best bakeries and patisseries including a senior role with Adriano Zumbo. I returned to Sheffield dying to do something for myself and started 4 Eyes Patisserie in my parent’s garage.

After two years I decided that wholesale wasn’t what I wanted to do so I left to open Gilt Patisserie on Abbeydale Road.

Rob Wainwright with his mum, Christine

Where do you get your inspiration?

It so easy to get ideas and recipes these days with social media and the internet. Books are coming out every month so ideas flow. The hard thing is sticking to what you believe in and not be too easily distracted what others are doing. I always like to try and do something different to push myself to try new flavours and keep the menu interesting. A lot of how I am in the kitchen and how I run Gilt is inspired from the chefs I’ve worked under in the past. The way I decorate, the flavours I like, it’s all from 15+ years of learning from good chefs in kitchens. How long does it take to perfect the art?

I’m always learning new things about the job with new ideas and trends evolving all the time. For me the main thing is there is nowhere to hide. You can’t just blag it and hope for the best. It’s a science! The more you know about how things might react the easier it becomes. There are so many different factors that can change in a day that will affect the final product so consistency is a big must. I’m 20 years in and there is so much more to learn. The deeper you get in to it the more consistent you become and the better the product will be. Finesse helps also. What makes Gilt Patisserie special?

We try and make the whole experience special so that before you have even tasted the cakes you have left the shop with a smile on your face. Beyond the looks there are different mouth feels, textures and flavour combinations. The high-end produce we use, the passion and knowledge that goes in to them makes them more special. Also, I think people relate then to memories of being elsewhere in the world remembering special times. What’s your favourite patisserie to make?

My favourite section in the kitchen has to be the Viennoiserie (croissants, brioche) section. Laminating dough is one you have to get right – with temperature and rolling, resting and shaping, it’s not right up until the cooking process that you realise you

missed the sugar out. If you don’t focus on it, it can be a nightmare, which makes it more exciting. Fortunately, I get to taste everything in the shop regularly. I think what I like probably shows in the items I put in the shop. I like sour, tangy, sharp things and if you know gilt, you’ll know passion fruit is often on. Hazelnut I’m a sucker for.

We have always offered the option for large celebration cakes on the version of the current range at the time. We are happy to offer larger events inducing weddings, birthday and any other special occasions. We get asked to do macaron towers, large display wedding cakes, individual cakes for weddings, confectionery for wedding favours. I’m always happy to discuss options.

In Westside this month, we have our Confetti wedding special. Do you cater for special occasions?

What are your future plans?

My plans are to hit it hard this year, take some staff on, open more often and bring back the confectionery section to full power along with pushing the coffee and retail section. Gilt en Route, our Sunday brunch delivery pack will reappear twice a month as of February. We would also like to get involved in local events around the city to help increase the brand name. Visit Gilt Patisserie at 12 Hickmott Road or visit www.giltpatisserie to find out more. www.sheffieldvibe.com 27

EATING OUT

A step to special THE DEVONSHIRE ARMS AT PILSLEY IS A COSY COUNTRY PUB WITH A TOUCH OF CLASS, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. f you enjoy a winter walk, they don’t come much better than those around the Chatsworth Estate. With woodlands, moorlands and more, there’s plenty to satisfy all types of walkers. And if you like to finish in a cosy pub, well, you’re spoilt for choice. The village of Pilsley is just a couple of miles from Chatsworth and as well as being home to its farm shop, is also home to the Devonshire Arms, which is owned and run by the estate. The Devonshire, like other buildings in the village, is built from local sandstone and offers everything you would expect from a country pub - delicious food, quality ales and a warm welcome. It has 13 bedrooms too, should you wish to extend your stay after lunch or dinner. In the daytime it’s popular with walkers and visitors to the area - you can call in for hearty soups, burgers and fish and chips - but in the evening, with the open fire blazing and the lights turned down a bit lower, it becomes altogether more special. The food is a big step up from what you would call traditional ‘pub grub’ and his menu includes dishes including goats cheese pannacotta, buttered plaice and roasted cauliflower.

I

30 www.sheffieldvibe.com

There’s a good, varied wine list to complement the food too. I started with a real winter warmer, roasted butternut squash soup (£8) served with parmesan-topped croutons, pumpkin seeds and a drizzle of oil. The soup was deliciously smooth and I particularly liked the croutons which were lovely and crisp and topped with plentiful grated cheese. My wife opted for the fresh-tasting sea bass, pomegranate, cauliflower and peanut (£10). Main courses continued the high standards, with my pan roasted Atlantic cod (£22) just nudging ahead of the rump and cheek of Derbyshire beef (£22.50) in the popularity stakes. Served with smoked mussels. brussel sprouts and crispy kale, the fish was perfectly cooked and packed with flavour, a real hearty dish. My wife was full of praise for her beef dish; we really enjoyed the tenderness and intense flavour of the cheek and the chips, served in a separate dish, were excellent too. Desserts were perhaps an indulgence too far - portion sizes at the Devonshire are generous - but I’m glad I tried the rice pudding, plum, stem ginger and

vanilla (£8). Again, a real warming dish, the undertones of ginger gave it a real spiciness, offset by a a cool ice cream and the richness of the plum - it was delicious. My wife’s praline parfait, mascarpone, cherry and coffee (£8) was equally indulgent and the perfect way to finish our excellent meal. We had glasses of Chamuyo Argentinian malice (£11) and Fentimans ginger ale (£1.80) to complement our food. The Devonshire Arms is a country pub with real class and the perfect place to stop off if you’re in the area. Although after all the food, we could probably do with that walk afterwards rather than before. The Devonshire Arms High Street, Pilsley, Bakewell, DE45 1UL Tel: 01246 565405 devonshirehotels.co.uk

he Pantone Colour of the Year 2022 is here and, for the first time in the history of the Pantone Colour of the Year, they have created an entirely new colour: Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri. The combination of violet red undertones and blues represents the transformation of the physical and digital world. This transformation has emerged following lockdowns and isolations which has meant the digital world has taken a new place in our lives. This shift is seen in many areas including in digital art, the NFT phenomenon (Google it!) and the rise of the metaverse. We are breaking new frontiers and with them come new possibilities and transformations. Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri is described by Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, as conveying a “spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions”. We think it’s going to be a hit! And as well as naming their colour of the year, Pantone have also selected a ‘Spring/Summer 2022 Colour Palette’, which we have also featured over the next few pages. From Cascade to Super Sonic, there’s a colour to suit every mood.

PROPERTY

A beginner’s guide to mortgages EAGER TO GET ON THE PROPERTY LADDER BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START? WE’VE GOT A COMPLETE GUIDE TO MORTGAGES TO GET YOU STARTED. t’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when it comes to mortgages. From APR to tracker, fixed rate and every other type of jargon, it’s not always the easiest thing to work out. Especially if you’ve never had significant debt before. Here, we’ll go through everything, from what a mortgage is, how you get one and what one might be best for you. Finding the right mortgage for you doesn’t have to be stressful.

I

What is a mortgage? A mortgage is, simply put, a loan that you get in order to buy a property. For most people, they won’t have the whole amount for the asking price in cash. So they pay a deposit (usually at leastten per cent of the asking price) and then they apply to a mortgage lender (like a bank or building society) for the rest.

How does a mortgage work? A mortgage is a large loan on your property that you will pay off on a monthly basis. The mortgage lender will work out an appropriate repayment amount each month, and this will include the interest that they charge you on the loan.

Most mortgages have a repayment term of around 25 years, but you can get them for shorter or longer periods of time. This means that the total amount of the mortgage, including the interest, has been split over the years it will take to repay it, and that’s how much you pay every month.

Repayment vs interest only mortgages It’s rare to have an interest only mortgage at the moment, as more lenders focus on offering repayment mortgages. Repayment mortgages ensure your monthly payment goes towards both the property value and the interest you owe. So at the end of the term, you own the property and you’ve paid the interest off in full. An interest only mortgage is just that – you only pay the interest. This means you don’t put any equity into your property and at the end of the loan term you still don’t own the property and owe the lender the full amount. This is mainly only available for buy to let properties.

What mortgage can I afford? Your mortgage offers will be dependent on a few factors: Mortgages are taking a

chance on you – they’re giving you a huge amount of money and they have to trust that you are likely to pay it back. Whilst ten per cent is usually the minimum for a deposit (unless you are using a Help to Buy scheme, or certain mortgages where five per cent is accepted), having your deposit be a bigger percentage of your property price will put you in a better position. This is because the lenders will have to give you less, and it will be easier for you to pay it back. Often having a bigger deposit will also open up better offers, saving you money. Mortgage lenders tend to work by the 4.5 rule – they will only lend you 4.5 times your annual income. This can make it harder to buy on your own, compared to buying as a couple or with a friend/family member. This doesn’t make getting a mortgage impossible, you just have to use it as a guide when considering properties. If you are buying with someone else, and your combined income is £50,000 a year, you can apply for a mortgage of £225,000. If you had a deposit of ten per cent, that would be £22,500. So the properties you consider buying should be priced around £247,500. Mortgage underwriters (people who consider your mortgage application) may have a look at the last six months of your accounts to assess whether there are any concerns. Make sure your accounts look healthy, with no overdraft charges, wildly big spends etc.

Where to get a mortgage In short, shop around for the best deal. You’ll find there’s quite a variation in terms of the interest, and how long the mortgage will be fixed for (this means you’ll pay the same set amount every month). However, if you really like your bank or building society, they may offer a great deal to existing customers, so it’s worth asking them about their mortgages. 42 www.sheffieldvibe.com

You could also consider using a mortgage broker – this is someone who will consider the different offers available on the market that would work best for you. As a specialist they may have access to better deals than those available to the public on comparison sites. Usually a mortgage broker is paid on commission from the lender that you choose to go with, but there may be a fee as well, so be sure to check.

How to apply for a mortgage You’ll need to prove your identity, so a driver’s license/passport as well as a utility bill is good to take. You’ll also need to show your annual income, so a P60 from your employer, your last three months payslips and bank statements for the last 3-6 months will help with this. If you are self employed, you may need to bring your SA302 tax return. You can confirm these details with the lender when you make an appointment, and they should tell you if you need to bring anything else. The lender will go through the application with you. Make sure to ask lots of questions about the mortgage, including the total repayable amount, the rules about overpaying and any charges or fees. When you’ve filled out the application, the lenders will perform a credit check, review the information and arrange a valuation of the property. This is to ensure that the

property you want to buy is worth the amount you are asking for. In general, processing a mortgage application can take between 18-40 days, but may take longer.

or a new one. Make sure you know when your fixed rate ends so you can look for a good deal.

A mortgage in principle

If you’ve arranged a mortgage for 25 years, it doesn’t mean you have to stay in that property until it’s paid off. When you sell your property, the remaining amount left on the mortgage is paid off by the sale, transferred to the mortgage lender, and then you have whatever is left from the sale after that is paid. Ideally, if you have paid off a chunk of your mortgage and your property has increased in value during the time you’ve lived there, you will have enough from the sale for a deposit on a new property. If you haven’t paid off much, and your property hasn’t increased in value, you may find yourself in negative equity. This is when your property is worth less than you bought it for. If this is the case, you may still owe the mortgage lender after selling, or you may not have enough for a deposit on a new property. If this is the case, consider whether you need to sell at that time, or whether you can make improvements to the property that might help it increase in value.

A mortgage in principle, or mortgage in agreement is something you get in advance of viewing properties. It proves that a lender is willing to give you the mortgage, which shows the seller you’re serious about moving forward, and could actually afford to buy the property. You are not obligated to get your mortgage with the lender who offered you the agreement in principle.

What happens when the fixed rate ends When your mortgage fixed rate term comes to an end (usually between 1-5 years, depending on which mortgage product you chose) you will be placed on SVR – the Standard Variable Rate. This is often more expensive and your lender can change their SVR at any time. The good news is that you can remortgage at this point – lenders often benefit from people not wanting to go through the hassle of remortgaging and finding another deal every few years. Remortgaging simply means you are transferring your mortgage to a new deal. This could be with the same lender,

INTERVIEW

Still hanging around BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM AND TOUR, THE STRANGLERS ARE STILL AS RELEVANT AS EVER. JULES BOYLE SPOKE TO JEAN-JAQUES BURNELL AND DAVE GREENFIELD. t’s not often a band produces one of the finest albums of their career 44 years after their first hit, but The Stranglers have always been a unique proposition. Rising from the UK punk scene of the mid-70s, the band quickly established themselves as their own thing, due in no small part to the melodic basslines conjured by founding member Jean-Jaques Burnell as well as Dave Greenfield’s singular and baroque keyboard sound. Now, nearly five full decades after their formation, the band - Jean-Jacques Burnel, Baz Warne and Jim Macaulay are heading back on the road to support Dark Matter, their 18th studio album that saw them achieve one of the highest

I

44 www.sheffieldvibe.com

chart placings ever, proving that even after all this time, they’re still as relevant and essential as ever. That success has been bittersweet though, with the tragic passing of Greenfield during the recording of the record last year. They very nearly finally called it a day as a result, but instead pushed on to finish what has become both a tribute and an epitaph to their fallen brother. This is the first Stranglers album made remotely, how did that work?

Baz: “We had started off with ten days in a studio together back in early 2019 but spent the rest of that year touring around the world, so never had the time to continue it.Then of course, Covid hit and

horrifically we lost our beloved compadre and keyboard player, Dave Greenfield. We really didn’t know what we were going to do, but it became apparent that we should finish the album at the very least. That threw up a lot of questions on the technicalities of how we would do it, but we all have studios in our houses, so the engineer coached us through it and of course we had the luxury of time, with no constraints or deadlines. We worked diligently on it, but it wasn’t easy not being in the same place as each other, so that it came out as well as it did is a testament to how much of a team effort it was.We were united in our grief, but there was a freedom there with the lack of deadlines.”

INTERVIEW

How much of the album does Dave feature on?

Baz: “We had worked on eight of the tracks in various stages with Dave, but it soon became apparent we hadn’t got everything out of him that we needed, so the keyboards were augmented, as everybody knows, but the essence of what you hear, especially the very strong lead lines, that’s all Dave. It took a good two or three months before we could contemplate doing anything though, to be quite honest. It was an awful time, but once we started listening back to what we had already done though, it was quite obvious that it had to see the light of day. He played some fantastic stuff on those tracks and it’s also both a testament to him and an epitaph too. A lot of people have said and it’s something we agree with, that the album is also a really strong collection of songs in their own right as well. That’s another thing to be proud of for us. We came out the other side and yeah, there are a few little sentimental bits on there, but so what? F*cking shoot us. We had to express it and get it out somehow. We have this hard men reputation for whatever reason, but that’s how we expressed our emotions and we’re very pleased with it. It’s a very bittersweet thing, though. A lot of people have suffered great loss during the pandemic, so that was just our own way of dealing with it.” JJ: “When you’ve been involved with someone for over 45 years, It’s a huge loss, not only as a working colleague, but as a member of the family. The f*cker even actually lived in my house for over nine months at one point, until I told him he could find his own place. He honestly hadn’t thought of that, so was like ‘yeah, okay.’ Dave was on the autistic spectrum, which some people really struggle with, and others thrive on. He was one of the latter, but he also didn’t have any filters, so he wouldn’t realise that you were falling asleep when he was taking an hour to answer a simple question! Baz: “Dave looms large over the whole album, as he always did. He was a huge part of what people would class as The Stranglers’ trademark sound, both him and JJ, so to lose one half of that was very difficult, but his presence very much looms large still. I’ve got pictures of him down in the basement where my studio is and I see him and hear him every day,

one way or another. We’ve all agreed that he would have been very proud of it, too. We know he would, as we knew him extremely well.” Can you tell us more about the tracks that were written after Dave’s passing? Was it a cathartic experience for you to pay tribute to him in that way?

Baz: “Well there’s And If You Should See Dave… obviously, but there’s also the one after it, If Something’s Gonna Kill Me (It Might As Well Be Love), which starts with the line ‘Innocence has left this house’, which is a direct reference to him. It’s no secret that Dave had Asperger’s, which made him a true English eccentric in every sense of the word, but it also gave him a wide-eyed, innocent view of a lot of things. There’s references to him peppered all over the album actually, but those two in particular are very specifically about him. It was a very cathartic experience, but it didn’t feel like that at the start. It was more like ‘oh no, I don’t know how I can even face this, never mind do it’, which was really hard to get past. There are a couple of tracks that were quite close to completion when we lost him, so when I first listened to them after that, particularly The Last Men On The Moon, it was really difficult for me to listen to. I got myself all geared up for it and I just couldn’t do it. I had to go back to it a few weeks later. A loss like that could only be devastating for everyone, was there any thought to calling it a day at any point? JJ: “There’s been lots of times over the years I thought we had reached the end of The Stranglers, where I never had a thought to carry on, like when Hugh left

or when Jet’s health was starting to fail. Both of those times, it was Jet who said ‘no, we carry on’ and when he couldn’t play drums anymore, he was the one who said ‘I’ve got just the bloke for you.’ When Dave broke on through to the other side, after the initial shock, all we wanted to do was finish the project, but with no plans for touring it or anything more. That was our only priority. But then our agent called to say that we were selling more tickets, so we realised that a lot of people still wanted to see us. Dave being Dave, had inspired so many musicians to study him and I had actually played with one of those disciples in the studio about 20 years ago, so we auditioned him over Zoom and then he met up with the rest of the band in person. His playing wasn’t in question, but he had to fit with the band and get on with everyone too, which I’m pleased to say he did brilliantly. Dave has left the biggest shoes to fill, but we know now that we have the guy to step in. We can never replace him and wouldn’t want to, but he’s left a legacy which can now be followed.” The Stranglers could easily settle for being a heritage act, but instead you have a top five album. How important is it for you to keep challenging yourselves to create new music?

Baz: “The one thing we are adamant about is that we’ll never become a heritage act. I’m not knocking anyone who does it as people have a living to make and if there’s a market for it, f*cking go for it, but we write new material and we still have something to say. I think people want that too, as Dark Matter went Top 5, which is the first time a Stranglers album has done that in nearly 40 years. There were a few champagne corks going off in my house the night we got that news. We are still very much in contact with Pam Greenfield, Dave’s widow too of course, so there were some emotional phone calls too. It’s a cliche, but The Stranglers are a family. We fight, we argue but there’s a deep bond and love there, so no matter what, we get through it, because that’s what families do.” The Stranglers play O2 Academy, Leeds on 12 February and Sheffield City Hall on 24 February. £500k future business investment Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, starts 2022 with the news it has just completed a round of pandemic-busting spending. The Chesterfield based company, which has successfully traded throughout the coronavirus crisis, has invested £500K in the future of the business with additional racking at its national distribution centre in Kettering; and upgrading the company’s IT systems. Said MD Peter Kelsey: “Our strategy has always been to invest heavily in significant stockholding levels – and given current supply issues, this has never been more important. It gives customers the reassurance of knowing that whatever else they might struggle to source, flooring needn’t be one of them. “As a company we took the decision last year to significantly increase our stockholding from the £2million pre-COVID levels to £2.75million.The additional racking has enabled us to further increase this to £3.4million. Our investment in IT will also result in improved customer facing efficiencies.” Operating across 15 regional outlets throughout the UK, Designer Contracts is also on a recruitment drive to fill more than 20 vacancies. Said Peter: “The past 20 months have been incredibly challenging for anyone running a business, but we remain committed to taking the company forward.”
