WhenitcametodevelopingtheLittle CastleheconferredwithLordLumley’s ‘inventor’orarchitectwhoprovided Italianatedesignswithahallandasmall diningroomcalleda‘tenelli’.The ‘tenelli‘wasunsuitableforanEnglish earl,butfitting,saidCavendish,foran Italiangentlemanwhokeepsonlyapair ofservantsandeatsonly“saladsand frogs,thatyieldlittlevapour.”
Adesignforthehallchimney,probably byJohnSmythson,drewonthe publishedworkofSebastiano Serlio.Althoughtheblackandwhite marblefireplacesinBolsover’sLittle Castlewereinstalledafterthedeathof CharlesCavendish,theywerelikely inspiredbythepublicationofanEnglish translationofSerlio’sArchitecturain 1611,possiblyconnectingtheconception ofBolsoverwithaninterestinItalian designatthecourtofPrinceHenry.
CharlesCavendishdiedin1617and wasburiedatBolsoverandsoitwasleft toWilliam,now1stDukeofNewcastle, tocontinuetheimpressiveworkhe’d started.Atthattime,mostofthe structurewasfinishedandso,withthe helpofthearchitectSmythson,William completedtheinteriors.

Williamalsoaddedthevastandstately TerraceRangeoverlookingtheValeof Scarsdale,nowadramaticrooflessshell. Toshowoffhisachievement,in1634he hostedCharlesIandQueenHenrietta Mariahere,whentheentertainment Love’sWelcome,amasquespecially writtenfortheoccasionbyBenJonson, wasperformedintheFountainGarden.
DuringtheEnglishCivilWar(16421651),WilliamfoughtfortheRoyalists, buthewasdefeatedattheBattleof MarstonMoorin1644andwentintoexile inFrance.DuringhisexileWilliammethis secondwife,Margaret,whohadtravelled toParisasamaidofhonourtoQueen HenriettaMaria,wifeofCharlesI.
OnthereturnoftheCavendishesto Englandin1660,WilliamandMargaret begantorestoretheirestates.At Bolsover,theyrebuiltthestateapartment intheTerraceRangeandbuiltthe cavernousRidingHouseRangewithits magnificentroofandviewinggalleries. TheRidingHouseisoneoftheearliest inEnglandtosurvivecompleteanda
landmarkinBritishequestrianism.Here Williamindulgedhispassionfortraining greathorsesinstatelydressage. Manyoftheroomsthroughoutthe LittleCastleatBolsoverarerichly decoratedwithwallpaintings–rare survivalsfromtheearly17thcentury. Whiletheoriginalartistsareunknown, allthepaintedschemesthroughoutthe buildingwerecompletedduringSir William’stime,andparticularlybeautiful examplesexistintheHeavenand ElysiumClosets.Thesesmallrooms openedoffWilliamCavendish’s
bedchamberandwereextremelyprivate spaces,intowhichonlythemost privilegedwouldhavebeeninvited.
TheceilingoftheHeavenCloset featuresapaintingoftheAscension, datedfrom1619anddepictingangels surroundingtheascendingfigureof Christ,andCherubiumonthewallshold instrumentsofthePassion.Thesubject matter,withitsCatholicassociations despiteWilliam’sprofessedambivalence inreligiousmatters,couldhavebeen inspiredbyWilliam’stravelsonthe continent.

ThedeclineofBolsoverCastlebegan underWilliamCavendish’ssonHenry, whodismantledthestateapartment.By the1770stheTerraceRangewasalready inruins.TheestatepassedtotheDukes ofPortland,whokepttheLittleCastleas aretreatuntiltheearly19thcentury.For mostofthe19thcenturyitwastenanted
andusedasavicarage.
AfterBolsoverCollieryopenedin 1889thecastlesufferedfromtheeffects ofminingsubsidenceandpollution.In 1946itwasgiventotheMinistryof Works,whostabilisedandrepairedthe buildings.
Since1984thecastlehasbeeninthe careofEnglishHeritage.Theparapetson thewall-walkhaverecentlybeen restored,offeringviewsoutoverthe landscape,andtheFountainGarden,with theVenusFountainasitscentrepiece,has beenreplantedwithperiodplants. Horsesarenowonceagainaregular sightatBolsover.

Almost50treeshavebeenplantedatasiteinStaveley,in memoryofHerMajestyQueenElizabethII.
Localschoolchildrenandtreewardenswerejoinedby representativesfromChesterfieldBoroughCounciltoplant 48oaktreesonDarleyCloseatStaveley,aspartofthe Queen’sGreenCanopyInitiative.
TheQueen’sGreenCanopyisauniquetreeplanting initiativewhichwaslaunchedtohelpmarkHerMajestyThe Queen’sPlatinumJubileein2022.FollowingthewishesofHis MajestyTheKing,theinitiativehasnowbeenextendedtothe endofMarch2023togivepeopletheopportunitytoplant treesthroughouttheplantingseason,inmemoriamtohonour HerMajesty.Thenewlyplantedtreeswillhelptocreateanew woodlandinthearea-calledtheQueen’sCopse–thatwill serveasalocalmemorialtoQueenElizabethII.
CouncillorTriciaGilby,LeaderoftheCouncil;Councillor AmandaSerjeant,DeputyLeaderoftheCouncil;andthe MayorandMayoressofChesterfieldwereallonhandtohelp plantsomeofthefirsttreesonthesite.

TherewillbeamonthlyatmosphereofcalmatCrystalPeaks asSensorySundaysmaketheirreturnfor2023.
Theaward-winningshoppingcentreisasupporterof NationalAutisticSociety’sAutismHourandthateventproved sopopularthatitwasdecidedthatoneSundayinevery monthshouldbeclassedasaSensorySunday.
Shops,cafesandbusinessesthroughoutthecomplexhave beenaskedtoimplementarangeofsimplesolutionstomake theshoppingexperienceeasierforpeoplelivingwithautism andconditionssuchasSensoryPerceptionDisorder, Hyperacusis,Bell’sPalsyandstress-allofwhichcancause soundsensitivity.
Thosechangesrangedfromdimmingbrightlightsand reducingtannoyannouncementstoturningdownmusic, creatingacalmerSundayshoppingexperience.Handdriers arealsoswitchedoff-alongwithchildren’srides-and vendingmachinesaresettosilent.
“WearesopleasedthatSensorySundaysarebackasa regularpartoftheCrystalPeakscalendarfor2023,”said centremanagerLeeGreenwood.“CrystalPeaksisverymuch apartofthewidercommunityand,assuch,wewanttomake theshoppingexperiencethebestwecanforallourvisitors.
“Theseareverysimplemeasuresthatwewillbe implementingandaskingourshopstoimplementtoobut thosesimplechangescouldhaveaverypositiveimpactfor autisticpeopleandtheirfamilieswithoutimpactingonour othervisitors.”
Celebratingtenyears
Chesterfield’sHolmebrookValleyParkiscelebratingtenyears ofhostingawalkinggroup.
On12January,thevolunteergroupleadersandotherlocal walkerswerejoinedbyMayorofChesterfieldCouncillor TonyRogerstoexplorewhattheparkhastooffer.
TheHolmebrookValleyPark‘walkwithus’walkinggroup originallylaunchedin2013,butitwastemporarilyputon holdin2020duetoCovid-19restrictions,thenlaunched againassoonasoutdoormeetingrestrictionsallowed.
Overtheyears,thegrouphaswelcomedmanyresidentsand otherlocalpeoplewhoenjoywalking.Anumberofthe group’sregularmembershavecompletedaccreditedtraining enablingthemtotakeitinturnstoleadthegroupeachweek.
TheHolmebrookValleyParkwalkinggroupmeetevery Thursdayat10.30amfora45–60minutewalkin

Safeguardingthefuture
ProposalstosafeguardthefutureofChesterfield’shistoric TaptonHouse–ensuringtheGrade-II*listedbuildingcanbe restoredandbroughtbackintobeneficialuse–havebeen consideredbyChesterfieldBoroughCouncil.
Asympatheticschemewhichwouldseethebuilding restoredandconvertedforresidentialaccommodation, togetherwithacommitmenttoretaintheparklandforpublic useandcreatevisitoraccesstopartoftheGeorgianmansion, waschosenasthepreferredoptionbythecouncil’sCabinet.
Thedecisionfollowedcarefulconsiderationofbidsfrom17 interestedparties,withthecouncil’sCabinetapprovingthe saleofthepropertyona999-yeargroundleasetodevelopers, StoneCastleEnterprisesLtd.Thesaleissubjecttofurther legalduediligenceandexchangeofcontracts.
CouncillorDeanCollins,cabinetmemberforeconomic growth,said:“JustlikethepeopleofChesterfield,wewantto achievetheverybestoutcomeforTaptonHouse.Thisiswhy wesetouttofindanewownerwiththenecessaryexpertise andfinancialabilitytorestoreandrefurbishTaptonHouse andsafeguarditslong-termfuture.
