Celebrating 60 years
his July, family-run Sheffield mobility company Clark & Partners celebrate 60 years of business. With four stores across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, as well as their work with Sheffield City Council and the University of Derby, business has changed quite a bit over the last six decades. This will be celebrated as a team with a garden party in July to mark the occasion.
Starting life as a car repairs garage in 1963, Clark & Partners has evolved to become retailers of a vast range of mobility solutions as well as providers of home adaptations. But how did this dramatic change come about?
Following the inception of the NHS in 1948, the Invalid Mobility Scheme promised to provide free vehicles to those with disabilities, primarily those left with life-changing injuries after the Second World War. The year before, Bert Greeves had designed a lightweight carriage for his cousin. Greeves’ company went on to make vehicles for the disabled for the next 30 years, like the Thundersley Invacar Model 70. Clark & Partners were one of the companies given a government contract to maintain these vehicles in addition to doing everything a regular garage did. It was here their journey to becoming mobility specialists began.
Fast-forward to 2023 and there is still a garage at Clark & Partners HQ. However, this now focuses on modifying cars to include adaptations that make it easier to
drive or be a passenger for those with mobility needs, including the transportation of mobility equipment. But this is just one aspect of a brand that has strived to know all there is to know about products and services that make mobility easy. From simple products like a long-handled shoehorn to whole-home adaptations, they’ve made it their business to know what the customer needs.
Customers are at the forefront of everything at Clark & Partners. There’s no pushy sales pitches and some products they won’t even think about selling online because they believe in personally working with the customer to find the ideal solution for them. Staff have even trained to become Level Four Trusted Assessors to be able to see the customer’s needs in a way that’s closer to how Occupational Therapists see them. Working alongside local councils, they’ve gained unique and increased insight into what people living with disabilities need
at home to maintain their independence and dignity.
As a result, as well as mobility aids, Clark & Partners can carry out home modifications. From a simple outdoor ramp to whole property adaptations, they’ve made it their business to know all there is to know. And, reassuringly, how different elements work alongside one another.
The focus on getting the customer just what they need is embedded in the company at every level. There are no pushy sales techniques. Shop staff won’t sell a customer so much as a shower stool if it doesn’t fit their requirements. That means the retailers have a vast range of products to ensure they can cater for everyone.
Clark & Partners understand that, given the area they specialise in, not everyone can visit a store to purchase what they need. That’s why, as well as a fantastic range available to buy online and have delivered, they offer free home assessments. Their specialists can visit customers’ homes to discuss the perfect product for them. They can even bring along a scooter or powerchair, for example, for them to try out.
To find out more, check out www.ClarkShop.co.uk. Alternatively, you can give any of the local stores a call to discuss products or arrange a home assessment:

The Maynard
Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, The Maynard in Grindleford has been recognised in the finals of the National Wedding Industry Awards in the Wedding Venue (Hotel) of the Year category at the Globe Theatre in London.
Having already tasted success by winning the regional finals, the venue went one step further on the national stage and were ‘highly commended’ in their category.
Using the time in lockdown to improve the venue, including extensive refurbishments to the ballroom - ‘The Chatsworth Suite’ - and the hotel rooms, The Maynard reopened later in the year and has been welcoming wedding couples and their guests ever since. It is licensed to hold civil wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships for up to 130 day guests and 200 evening guests, with expansive views over the Peak District.

New Image
Shopping for your summer wedding outfit? As we look forward to families being able to enjoy their celebrations, New Image has so many wonderful styles to suit every price point and wedding venue style.
“We are all so excited that weddings are happening and brides are determined to make their 2023 wedding plans for a wonderful occasion,” said owner Lesley Taylor.
“For mothers of the bride and groom who are thinking about their outfit for this year and beyond, now is the time to make an appointment to visit New Image. It’s been a great season for hats and we’ve seen ‘hatinators’ become much more popular. More stylish than fascinators but not as restrictive as hats, they offer the best of both worlds.”
Brands include Condici, Ispirato and the highly sought-after Veni Infantino. New Image is also an exclusive stockist of Spanish shoe brand, Elegant, which are available with both low or high heels as well as in half sizes too.

Looking ahead in style
We maybe in the midst of summer but for fashion-forward retailers, thoughts are already turning to autumn/winter. Lesley Taylor, proprietor of Hillsborough’s New Image, is no different and has a special event planned to launch her new collections alongside other retailers in September.
On Tuesday 19 September, Lesley is inviting guests to Wentworth Woodhouse for drinks, nibbles and a chance to preview new wedding and eveningwear ranges from the likes of Condici, Ispirato and the highly sought-after Veni Infantino and Carla Ruiz. See the website for the full range of designers.
Since first opening in 1986, New Image has become renowned for its occasionwear and has become the go-to place for all those memorable events including weddings, birthdays and days at the races as well as outfits for holidays, including cruises. Matching hats, fascinators, shoes and bags enables customers to purchase the whole ensemble under one roof.
New Image also stocks a great choice of dressy casual wear and day wear that are always stylish and on trend and
perfect wardrobe pieces for more lowkey social occasions.
“It’s been a great season for hats and we’ve seen ‘hatinators’ become much more popular,” said Lesley. “More stylish than fascinators but not as restrictive as hats, they offer the best of both worlds.”
If you’re in the market for new headwear, milliner Darcie Mae regularly visits the shop and is on hand to create bespoke head pieces to ensure a perfect match, although appointments are essential.
New Image is an exclusive stockist of Spanish shoe brand, Elegant, which are available with both low or high heels as well as in half sizes too.
“I did wonder how the economy would affect business,” said Lesley. “But what I’ve found is that people have shopped early and made sure they’ve got everything well in advance of their special celebration.
“The high street is diminishing and we’re grateful to our customers for continuing to support an independent business as well as the local community.”
Although customers are welcome to
pop in to the Middlewood Road boutique at any time, if you’re shopping for an extra-special occasion Lesley advises making an appointment.
“Online shopping may offer convenience but nothing replaces oneto-service,” added Lesley. “Our customers enjoy the personal service and attention they get from an independent boutique as well as our experience. We continually work hard to maintain great levels of customer service.”
The fashion show at Wentworth Woodhouse starts at 6.30-7pm with drinks and canapes served in the Pillared Hall before guests make their way up to the Marble Saloon to be seated for the catwalk show at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £20 and include a welcome drink on arrival and can be purchased in store at New Image. All proceeds will go to Wentworth Charity.

A STAG OR HEN DO DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN ALL-DAY BOOZING AND ANTICS. REBECCA WALES LOOKS AT ALTERNATIVE PRE-WEDDING CELEBRATIONS.
T
here’s been a noticeable trend recently that more people are organising stag/hen dos that don’t involve consuming vast amounts of alcohol. While some people might cringe at the thought of a boozefree stag/hen do, others might embrace the idea. After all, not everyone will fancy spending the following days after feeling slightly worse for wear with hazy memories.
If you’re planning to organise an alcohol-free stag/hen do but are struggling for ideas, then be sure to check out the list below. These unique stag/hen do activities are proof that you can still have a fun time without relying on booze.
Olympic Shames
Olympic Shames is the ideal stag/hen do activity if you’re looking to do something that’s both entertaining and hilarious whilst also allowing you to get some exercise. The Olympic Shames involves teams competing in a variety of typical school sports day games, but with an adult-themed, innuendo-based twist. For extra laughs, it’s also recommended that stags/hens play the games in fancy dress.
Bubble Football / Bubble Mayhen
Bubble football is a relatively new concept that’s becoming increasingly popular as a stag do activity. Strapped into a giant inflatable bubble (also
known as a Zorb) with just your legs free, bubble football is like the popular game we all know and love but with a hilarious twist. A similar activity which is less football-focused and more popular with hen dos is bubble mayhen. This involves hens competing in a variety of amusing games that will guarantee great fun and great laughs.
WEDDINGS
20 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Go-karting
Another increasingly popular activity which will also guarantee a lot of laughs, go-karting allows stags/hens to show off their driving skills and put their racing abilities to the test.
Farm Adventure
If you’re looking to organise a stag/hen do that’s slightly bizarre but certainly unique, then why not spend the day (or weekend) on a farm? Farm adventures allow stags/hens to take part in a variety of amusing farm-inspired activities, most of which involve mucking around with animals, tractors and hay bales. Alongside having a laugh, stags/hens may also pick up a few handy skills too.
Coasteering
If you fancy organising a slightly more adventurous stag/hen do, then coasteering is definitely worth checking out. Featuring a combination of scrambling, climbing, swimming, and cliff jumping in amazing locations, coasteering is a great way for stags/hens to get together as a group and do something really memorable and unique. Coasteering sessions can also be tailored to suit a group’s sense of adventure, fitness, and ability, which makes it an inclusive activity too.
Treasure Hunt
If you’re looking to organise a stag/hen do that’s both fun, inclusive and cheap, then a treasure hunt might be the answer. You can either plan your own or use a treasure hunt app which will provide teams with a list of clues, timed challenges and puzzles to complete, plus a live scoreboard and GPS map of the hunt location. As well as providing stags/hens with a unique way of exploring towns and cities, treasure hunts are also great for breaking the ice if there are people in the group who don’t know each other too well.
Murder Mystery
If you fancy organising a stag/hen do that’s both entertaining and immersive, then murder mysteries might be one to check out. You could either use a DIY murder mystery kit to create one yourself or take part in an organised event featuring professional actors. Another great ice-breaker activity,
murder mysteries encourage stags/hens to figure out whodunnit as a team by completing challenges, solving riddles, uncovering clues and questioning suspects.
Escape Room
Another relatively new concept that’s become increasingly popular as a stag/hen do activity is escape rooms. Similarly to murder mysteries, escape rooms provide a unique and immersive experience that can be either funny or frightening depending on the theme of the room. In order to unlock the door and escape, stags/hens must work together to solve a variety of clues, puzzles and riddles inside the room within a certain time limit.
Cinema Gaming
If your stag/hen do comprises a lot of gamers, then why not organise a gaming session at the cinema? Many cinemas will allow groups of people to rent a screen for a few hours, either to watch a film or to play games. All you have to do
is bring your own games console, link it up and then get ready to battle it out with your fellow stags/hens on an immense screen with immersive surround sound.
Virtual Reality Experience
If you would like to organise a stag/hen do that’s completely different to anything else, then why not leave the real world behind and take your stags/hens on a VR adventure? Using all the latest equipment provided at a VR studio, stags/hens can experience a variety of mind-bending VR simulators that’ll turn their world upside down. Alternatively, stag/hens can participate in exciting multiplayer VR games which will immerse them in a wide range of virtual worlds.

WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS 2023
Put yourself in the running
NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2023 WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS ARE NOW OPEN. READ ON TO FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN BE PART OF THIS YEAR’S EVENT.
he Westside & Southside
TRestaurant & Bar Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing. This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
The kitchen served a wonderful fourcourse meal which consisted of cod and prawn bake, lightly spiced sweet potato and coconut soup, pot daube of beef and white chocolate and raspberry creme brulée.
When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better. The 3
AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award.
Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and well-deserved.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted for by yourselves of course. We had a flurry of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, Beju and The Wortley Arms, it was the north Sheffield venue that scooped the prize, winning by a narrow margin of less than 100 votes. It couldn’t have been closer.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.
Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk
Young Chef of the Year 2023
Calling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Southside is staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2023.
The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 August 2023.
All entrants will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition at a date to be arranged later this year. Last year we hosted the competition at Sheffield College’s renowned catering department and were wowed by some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Our winner was Chris Parker from The George, Hathersage… so who’ll be named as our next rising star?
The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight.
The results will be announced at the 2023 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – on Monday 30 October.
We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few months, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved.
But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know.

Get the party started
CAN YOU BELIEVE TRAMLINES IS 15? WITH RICHARD ASHCROFT, THE COURTEENERS, PAUL HEATON AND MORE, THIS YEAR’S EVENT LOOKS SET TO BE A SCORCHER. LET’S HOPE THE WEATHER OBLIGES TOO.
The countdown is now well and truly on. By the time you read this, work is probably well underway to get Hillsborough Park ready for what will be the fifth Tramlines event to be held there.
And what a line-up we have. Way back at the start of the year it was confirmed that Richard Ashcroft, The Courteeners and Paul Heaton would be headlining the weekend, which takes place from 2123 July. These will be joined by the likes of DMA’s, Kaiser Chiefs, Sugababes and Bloc Party. Local favourites Reverend & The Makers and the Everly Pregnant Brothers will also return.
The second wave of announcements added UK Eurovision contestant Mae Muller, Ella Henderson, Professor Green, Chappaqua Wrestling and more.

Operations director Timm Cleasby has been involved with Tramlines since the beginning and said: “This year’s lineup is a cracker with some awesome names and, as always, there’s more than just music with loads to do, see and get involved with.
“My personal must-sees are Kate Nash, Rachel Chinouriri, Rumbi Tauro, Sugababes, the funny Paul Smith and Paul Heaton. To quote our much-missed friend Sarah Nulty, ‘I just want to have a massive party with all my friends’. The turns are booked, the party’s on and you’re all invited. It can’t come soon enough.”
Comedy plays a huge part of Tramlines, taking over the T’Other Stage in the daytime. Acts confirmed this year include award-winning comedian and Hollywood star Omid Djalili, the outrageous spoof news reporter Jonathan Pie, and the quick-witted Hot Water Comedy Club compere Paul Smith. Plenty more laughs are in store with Tom Wrigglesworth, John Hastings, Nina Gilligan, Tamer Kattan, Scott Bennett and Raul Kohli.
Since 2009, Tramlines remains true to its roots in supporting both breaking and emerging talent. This year it’s tipping acts such as Stone, The Moly Wallopers, Primaqueen, Jetski, Franz Von, Amaroun, Deadletter, Lizzie Esau, Deuxe to be big hits.
Each year The Library Stage is a thriving home to a diverse selection of grass roots artists and once again local talent competition Pattern and Push will be curating the Saturday line-up, with newly-announced local acts Coco, Deuxe, JxK and DJ Lamour confirmed to appear.
The Open Arms stage has been an absolute hit with festival goers ever since its arrival in 2021 for its buzzing atmosphere and cabaret-style billing. Tramlines is thrilled to reveal the return of Shaun Williams’ Barrioke for 2023 which pulls in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. There will be sing-alongs galore with Hip Hop Karaoke and Tragedy - Heavy Metal Bee Gees from NYC- games from Musical Bingo and Shell Suit Cher Bingo, world music from The Mariachis and German oompah band Brasswurst, and many more not-tomissed performances including, The Daniel Wakeford Experience, and the band born out of Sheffield’s disability arts charity, Under The Stars.
The Open Arms is also host to ‘Speakers Corner’, the only place on site to discover cutting edge lyricists, insightful poets and spoken word artists. Poet and hip-hop artist himself, Otis Mensah, is back to programme an exciting mix of talent that includes, San Diego rapper RoQy TyRaiD, a takeover from Sheffield’s urban lyricist competition Slambarz featuring The 1 Devotion and Young Eman, the caressing tones of Aka Kelzz, the emerging talents of poet Tai Ògún, Sheffield’s newest Poet Laureate, Danaë Wellington, and so much more.
Dominic Heslop, co-founder of Slambarz said, “We are so grateful for the opportunity to showcase the incredible talent, charisma and artistry that our young musicians possess. At Slambarz we strongly advocate live performance to enhance the connection between artists, audience and the community.
“Tramlines is one of biggest music festivals in the UK, renowned for its colossal headline acts, diverse culture and exponent of grassroots musicians and we’re very happy to be involved.”
And if that wasn’t enough, The Open Arms will also stage party-starting DJ sets when some of Sheffield’s favourite club brands takeover. Expect to flex the vocal cords and do some serious shapethrowing when The Sound - A Celebration of the 1975, ABBA Party, and the Club Tropicana DJs take control of the sound desk. There ain’t no party like a Tramlines party!
As we get ready to go to print, there was a handful of tickets still available – and we mean a handful. To find out more, visit www.tramlines.org.uk

BAMFORDS AUCTIONEERS & VALUERS HAS THE ‘STRONGEST TEAM IT HAS EVER HAD’ AND RECENTLY OPENED A NEW FLAGSHIP AUCTION ROOM IN DERBY.
Bamfords and its partner companies, Neales, Richardson & Linnell and Noel Wheatcroft, have had their roots in Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire for almost 200 years however, the history of auctioneering can be traced surprisingly far further back in its history.
The Taverns and coffee houses of England and France were originally the venues where one would go to buy and sell art and ‘chattels’ (personal property) during the late 17th century.
In ancient times Marcus Aurelius was said to have run an auction in Rome that lasted eight weeks.
A somewhat strange early method of selling was by candle. This involved a large candle lit in sight of the bidders where the auction would run until it went out. This method dates back as far as 1368. One can only imagine how often coffing and spluttering was used as an early tactic to extinguish the flame. The fights and quarrels of the candle method meant it was not universally popular.
The now familiar knock of the gavel in front of a room of bidders was first introduced in the 18th century and although the style has changed the basic principle has stayed the same until recent years.
Now in the 21st century Bamfords have not only expanded but have changed to adapt to the new market trends.
Bamfords’ premises at Peak Village Shopping Centre in Rowsley has extended into a second saleroom whilst the new Derby flagship auction room boasts an elegant double height atrium, two large salerooms and a third jewellery and precious metal gallery.
Bamfords have the design and technology to market art and antiques all over the world. They now regularly sell to more than 70 countries and also unlike many of its competitors still opens
its doors to view and bid in person.
TV auctioneer James Lewis emphasises that “an auction room can only be great with great auctioneers and before making a decision on where to sell, a client should certainly take the time to listen to the abilities of the auctioneer on the rostrum”.
James is a double winner of National Auctioneer of the Year and also holds Guinness World Records in auctioneering.
“Bamfords’ team is the strongest we have ever had with a combination of experience as well as some great new valuers,” he said. “Unlike many of our competitors locally, Bamfords have specialist valuers in charge of all departments.”
Upcoming lots
Bamfords hold regular auctions at both the Derby and Rowsley auction houses including fine art and antiques, jewellery and watches, library and curated objects, toys, juvenilia, collectables and comics, clocks and barometers, oriental works of art, firearms and militaria and fine silver as well as weekly collectors and interiors and on site single owner house auctions.
Bamfords conduct valuations at both their Derby and Rowsley auction rooms as well as many other venues across the region. For advice on selling in all areas including antiques, collectables and jewellery James and the team are available for home visits in Sheffield and the surrounding area.

Get ready for The Peak District Highland Games!
Some of the nation’s strongest men and women are coming to our area next month to battle it out in the bid to become the Peak District Highland Games Champion 2023.
The flagship show takes place at Matlock Farm Park located between Matlock and Chesterfield, on Sunday 27th August. It features athletes participating in six demanding strength events including the Tossing of the Caber, Eight Tonne Tractor Pull and Peak District Dinnie Stone Challenge.
Beginning with a parade of the athletes accompanied by a Scottish Piper Band, the day sees the Manbeast MC provide exciting commentary to enthuse the crowd, with the opportunity for spectators to even take part in a Tug of War.
Lotty Hawkins, communications manager at Matlock Farm Park said: “We’re delighted to have this fantastic event once again. It’s such a favourite for so many people, whatever the age. It’s a real spectacle and with so much else going on in the park, there’s something for everyone”.

The Garden Room reopens
The Garden Room restaurant has officially reopened its doors at The Cavendish Hotel in Baslow following a £1.1million investment with a brand new menu from executive chef, Adam Harper.
Guests in the refurbished and extended restaurant can enjoy a bright, relaxed setting that makes the most of its position overlooking Chatsworth’s parkland, and a seasonal menu that showcases the best local produce.
Executive Chef Adam Harper has worked in partnership with the gardeners and farmers at Chatsworth and local artisan suppliers and farmers – the majority of whom are based within in a five-mile radius of the hotel – to develop a menu that celebrates some of the Peak District’s best-known producers, including trout from Ladybower Fisheries, cold pressed rapeseed oil from Bakewell’s Brock & Moreton and pork from the family-run Moss Valley Farm.
The new Garden Room menu features starters such as smoked Ladybower trout and home-cured beef bresaola, mains including lamb, venison and beef from local farms, and plant-based dishes made from vegetables grown in the Chatsworth Kitchen Garden.
The Garden Room is open from 12noon to 9pm every day. To book a table, visit the restaurant’s website www.cavendishbaslow.co.uk or call 01246 582311.
Pampered pet Nacho set to steal the show
They do say every dog has his day… but cheeky Chihuahua Nacho is taking centre stage for a full week!
Nacho will be taking the small but vital role of Bruiser Woods, the pampered pet of aspiring lawyer Elle Woods in the Woodseats Musical Theatre Company production of award-winning show Legally Blonde.
It’s the story of Elle Woods, the girl who appears to have it all until her life is turned upside-down when her boyfriend dumps her to attend Harvard Law School.
Determined to get him back, Elle sets off in pursuit but surprises herself when she discovers that she too has the potential to be a legal eagle, overcoming dumb blonde stereotypes and taking the court room by storm as she tackles the defence in a notorious murder trial.
The Woodseats MTC production runs at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre and Arts Centre from 12-15 July.
Legally Blonde is directed by Sue Curr, assisted by Dylan Lambert, with musical direction by Dominic Ridler and choreography by Amber Parry and Lily Abram.
Tickets cost £17 each or £15 each for six tickets booked at the same time for the same evening. There is no disabled access. Call 0114 2644803 or 07855 423670 or email: tickets@woodseatsmtc.co.uk
Sky-House Rother Valley site is under construction
Work is now well under way on the latest development from award-winning Sheffield based house builder Sky House Co. And in a first for the company, it is a project that will focus primarily on the market for mature investors and downsizers.
Sky House Rother Valley is being built on the site of the former Killamarsh Station in the North East Derbyshire village of Killamarsh and will see the development of 13 three bedroom bungalows and dormer bungalows.
The first plots are expected to be released at the beginning of June, with a show home scheduled for launch in September. The properties, which have been designed by the acclaimed team at CODA Architecture in Sheffield, follow the trademark Sky-House style, with flexible living space and eco-friendly features, focusing on being carbon neutral in construction and energy efficient on completion.
The development sits alongside the popular Trans Pennine Trail and is also within walking distance of Rother Valley Country Park.
“The Sky-House Co mission is to fill the missing sector of the UK housing market by creating homes that cater for clients ignored by national house builders,” said Sky-House Co founder and director David Cross.

Messing about on the river
WHO NEEDS THE COAST WHEN YOU CAN HIT THE WATER RIGHT HERE IN SHEFFIELD AND THE PEAK DISTRICT. WE SPEAK TO THE MAN BEHIND DC OUTDOORS WHO IS BRINGING WATERSPORTS TO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
or something that originated from surfers in the seas around Hawaii, you wouldn’t think that Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) would work as well in an urban environment. Particularly in an industrial, land-locked city like Sheffield where you have to take at least an hour’s drive just to get a glimpse of the ocean. And even then, the North Sea is a far cry from the Pacific. But for the last five years, SUP has found a settled home in Sheffield as well
as at Chesterfield Canal. As part of the Outdoor City initiative, sessions were set up by DC Outdoors at Victoria Quays where willing participants could get to grips with their equipment in the canal basin before heading off down the Tinsley Canal. Not only has it become a great way to learn a new activity but is a unique and fantastic way to explore the city.
DC Outdoors offer half-day taster sessions as well as full-day courses and
trips in both Sheffield and Chesterfield as well as the Peak District. The ones in Sheffield tend to run fortnightly on weekends during the spring/summer season (March to October) and includes all equipment hire as well as expert instruction from the DC Outdoors team.
“Victoria Quays is a great spot,” said Dan Crawford, who set up DC Outdoors in 2018. “We’ve got plenty of space to run the sessions and it’s easy to head down the canal from there.”

DC Outdoors’ SUP sessions can take up to ten people at any one time but Dan tries to limit numbers to six as this gives a better ratio between boarders and instructors. They are open to all levels of ability and all equipment is provided –boards, paddles, buoyancy aids, wet suits (if required).
“The half-day taster is a great way to try Stand Up Paddleboarding and once you’ve had a quick introduction to the equipment, after a short safety briefing we will get to grips with how to control the board whilst kneeling,” explained Dan. “Once we’ve got that sorted we’ll look at getting stood up – it is called stand up paddleboarding. When you’re feeling comfortable, you’ll put your newfound skills to use and go on a small journey.”
The progression from these taster sessions is a full-day ‘Discover’ session, which adds a bit more in-depth instruction on stroke technique and ways to be more efficient and effective.
And what happens if you fall in?
“You’ll get wet!” laughs Dan. “If you fall in, we’ll get you back on board. The
canal basin is 14ft deep and the canal between six and eight feet. Although the water might look a bit murky it’s clean enough.”
Stand Up Paddleboarding is just one of many activities Dan offers; he set up DC Outdoors with the aim of creating and providing bespoke adventure holidays. These SUP sessions, along with canoeing and kayaking, are part of his ‘off the shelf’ activities which he runs on a regular basis.
Although DC Outdoors is based in Sheffield, Dan is not restricted to one location, he can take you to the perfect venue based on your activity choice and
location, whether that’s the city centre, the Peak District or much further afield.
From a young age, Dan knew that he wanted to work as an outdoor instructor. Having visited outdoor activity centres with youth groups, and taken a walking holiday with school, Dan joined his local climbing wall in preparation and waited for the for the opportunity to start his instructor training.
At 17, Dan was accepted early on to a two-year instructor training course at the Frontier Centre in Northamptonshire, where he learnt his trade. Developing intensive skills training in archery, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, team

building and leadership, Dan put this into practice with the wide and diverse groups coming through the centre.
After gaining more experience and qualifications, newly-married Dan and his wife moved to Sheffield where he began a freelance career, working with outdoor centres throughout the area as well as some further afield in Scotland, the Lake District and Wales.
Having gained a great reputation for high quality delivery, the opportunity arose for Dan to take on a new role as head of paddlesport at Ulley Activity Centre – a centre run by a school academy. Dan delivered Outdoor GCSEs in Climbing, Archery, Orienteering, Hillwalking, Canoeing and Kayaking as well as KS3 enrichment sessions and after-school clubs. After three years, Dan’s adventure ended with voluntary redundancy as the education system faced financial squeeze.
At a crossroads in his career, Dan decided to set up DC Outdoors and has
not looked back. He’s happiest when he’s out on the water and in addition to the SUP sessions, he also runs regular canoe and kayak sessions too.
The most popular course is the ‘Zero to Hero’ kayak course, which can take you from being a complete novice to having experience your first taste of whitewater rapids.
“We start with how to turn the kayak efficiently and then look at getting the boat moving forward in a straight line,” explains Dan. “We’ll do this while taking a short trip along the Cromford Canal, for example.
“After lunch we’ll move to the River Derwent, where we’ll look at the skills needed to take on your first bit of whitewater. If you want to be ready for a whitewater adventure, this is the perfect starting point.”
DC Outdoors is not restricted to water-based activities but can run rock climbing, abseiling and weaselling sessions too.
“The Peak District is a climber’s paradise,” said Dan. “Climbers come from all over the world to climb on the famous gritstone edges of Stanage, Burbage, Froggatt and the Roaches, to name a few. When you book a climbing activity with DC Outdoors, these sublime rock faces are our playground!”
After working and delivering outdoor sessions for over 20 years, Dan has had his fair share of bumps and scrapes and can count a dislocated shoulder, fractured pelvis and snapped finger tendon as his ‘biggest’ injuries, not that he’s been deterred.
“It’s all par for the course really,” he added. “Most of them have come from climbing; you’re much safer on the water!”
If you’re keen to see another side to Sheffield and the Peak District, now is the perfect time to grab a paddle and hit the canals.
