Pit stop in the Peak CHARLES BRADSHAW DISCOVERS SUMPTUOUS DELIGHTS IN DERBYSHIRE. afé 19 at White’s is located at Calver Cross Roads in the Peak Distr ict National Park, a pleasant half hour dr ive from Shefffiield. With plenty of tour ist attractions in close proximity, it’s an ideal start, ffiinish or stop-off point for walkers, cyclists, and visitors to th he area. Ar r iving late mor ning on a Spr ing weekday, my dining companion and I found there to be ample car parking spaces located on-site. Stepping into th he recently rebranded venue, we were treated to a heavenly aroma of freshly brewed ground coffee. This is a bespoke blend created for Café 19 by Shefffiieldbased company Roastology. The number of the café relates to the year 1919 when White’s business in Calver was or iginally established. A photographic collage ador ns the space behind the well-stocked counter, showcasing a potted history of the local family ffiir m. The inviting venue is fur nished with a mixture of soft upholstered seats, dining tables and chairs. An outdoor dining area is also provided for customers to enjoy refreshments al fresco.

C

My choice of beverage was a small Amer icano (£2.35) while my companion opted for English Breakfast Tea (£2.15) which ar r ived promptlly as we studied th he menu. A wide range of hot dr inks are on offer, alongside soft dr inks displayed on the counter area. The food menu included several breakfast options, hot and cold lunch dishes, fresh pastr ies and sandwiches; with many choices suitable for vegetar ian diners. I ordered a Toasted Hunters Chicken Panini (£7.95) with my companion choosing a hot Homemade Cheese and Onion Flan (£5.95). Both were accompanied with homemade coleslaw, side salad (cucumber, rocket and cher ry tomatoes) and cr isps. My lightly toasted Panini housed thick, succulent chicken pieces mar inated in BBQ sauce with h melted cheddar cheese. My companion’s quiche was a generous portion with short-crust pastry sur rounding a deliciously r ich creamy ffiilling and topped with sliced tomato. For dessert, we shared a hearty serving of Raspber ry and Almond Bakewell Slice (£3.15). A thick layer of raspber ry jam lay beneath a sumptuous almond-sponge

mixture, ffiinished with toasted almonds. There are numerous tempting choices available including mufffiins, blondies and slices of cake. In addition, a var iety of seasonal delights are on offer, alongside some vegan delicacies. All the desserts are supplied by Made by Ruth, a local artiisan baker who delivers the homemade confectiions daily. A steady stream of customers ffiilled the tables and plush seats dur ing our visit. Everyone received a war m welcome from th he counter staff coupled with prompt and professional service. Café 19 at White’s is a gem hidden in plain sight; a great place for a pit stop dur ing a day out in the Derbyshire countryside. Keeping things on track AS PART OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE, BELINDA TURNER MBE ENSURES THE HORSE TRIALS RUN LIKE CLOCKWORK – AND REMAIN A WORLD-CLASS SPECTACLE. WE SPOKE TO HER ABOUT THIS YEAR’S EVENT AND MORE. elinda Tur ner MBE grew up around horses so it was perhaps inevitable that she would follow in her moth her’s footsteps and continue the great work that Stubbing Court Training (SCT) does. SCT was one of the ffiirst gover nment-supported workplace trraining programmes when it started 40 years ago and provides a career structure for young people wanting to pursue careers in the equine industry. Many of their apprentices have gone on to have successful careers as professional r iders, travelling grooms, yard managers, instructors and even the King’s Troop and Household Cavalry. Belinda is also part of the organising committee for Chatsworth Horse Tr ials and has played a huge part in br inging the world class event back to the area after an enforced three-year layo off due to the Covid pandemic. She spoke to us about SCT and what we can expect at the Chatsworth Inter national Horse Tr ials this year.

B

What’s your background?

My grandmother and mother had always had horses and competed in eventing and showjumping. I was put on from six months old! The offfiice has always been at home so I’ve been around trraining since eight years old. I competed in Working Hunters and jumping, did English at th he University of Durham. Committee in 2003. The event was then organised by Mike Ether ington-Smith, one of the best organisers in the world. Through Mike, I helped with the European Championships, Badminton Horse Tr ials, and the Beijing Olympics in Hong Kong. You’re part of the organising committee for Chatsworth Horse Trials. How difficult has it been over the last two years?

The last two years have been very difffiicult due to the totally unpredictable times. The work for the horse tr ials goes on throughout th he year, for example th he groundwork, building cross country jumps, organising offfiicials and volunteers goes on all year. So much of th he work was done pr ior to th he ffiirst cancellatiion in 2020. We then prepared again for 2021 but unfortunately the restr ictions were then lifted on 17 May, and the event was due to run on 14-16 May, so again we had to cancel. In addition, many of our offfiicials are the leading professionals in the world so they get booked one to ttw wo years in advance. The horse tr ials also ffiits in to a world cycle of Europeans, World mpics, so Championships and Olym obviously the competitors’ planning and preparation for events for th he horses has been dramatically affected. Has anything changed this year, enforced or otherwise?

We have a lot of new volunteers and offfiicials this year which is great. We also have new apprentices taking the opportunity to volunteer which will be great for them. We have many new attractiions and even more for children. How will you be involved over the weekend?

Making the tea! Looking after everyo one involved in the Dressage section of the event, trying to make sure everyth hing stays on time, is in the r ight place at the r ight time, doing the r ight th hing! We have a huge ar my of judges, wr iters, scorers, stewards, runners, caterers, trade stands, doctors, vets, horses, r iders, grooms and spectators. What can visitors expect this year?

A great family day out! World class competiition. Many of the best r iders and horses in the world come to Chatsworth. We have eventtiing from Novice to 4* level. And the chance to see cross country in one of the most beautiful parks in the country, with cross country jumps beautifully built and designed by

one of the leading course designers in the world - Beijing and Tokyo Olympic course builder David Evans. The 4* level tracks are designed by four times Olym mpic silver medalist Ian Stark OBE. There’s also Arena Eventing, Pony Club Games and jumping, a fantastic Dog Show, Dog Agility, Burghley young Event Horse classes showcasing the best young horses, trade stands, Artisan Foods. And for children activitiies including: Circus Skills, climbing wall, face paintiing, Sheep Show, pottery paintiing.

And that we have hopefully provided a great exper ience for all th he horses for them to progress to their next event. I also lear n so much from all the team, work kiing with Olympic-level professionals and world class organisers is a huge pr ivilege and their meticulous attention to detail, commitment to the highest standards and enor mous effort is unique. reviously a fashion designer specialising in knitwear, Claire Simpson has had an exciting career in the fashion industrry, leading her to 15 years and counting in millinery. From styling and designing for music videos to having her fascinator wor n in front of the Queen, Claire has done it all. Excited to dedicate the rest of her life to millinery, with her two businesses and exceptional hats and fascinators, Claire speaks with to us about her talented work.

P

How long have you been in the fashion industry?

I did a degree in fashion design and th hen became a fashion designer specialising pr imar ily in knitwear. I also previously worked for a stylist to design for music videos and TV commercials. Then, when I met my now husband who is bor n and bred in Shefffiield, I moved up north h from London. Although I wanted to continue with my fashion background, I couldn’t be a fashion designer in the capacity I wanted to, so I re-trained as a milliner. Now it’s been a good 15 yeears in millinery.

What inspired you to have a fashion career?

Explain more about what products you make.

Fashion is something I’ve always wanted to do, I remember being ten years old, many moons ago, and th here was a show called The Clothes Show, I just loved it. As a child I would always be creatiing, like in the 80s and 90s, when it was ffiirst fashionable, I would cut up my mum’s clothes (sometimes she wouldn’t even know) and I would make scrunchies and sell them to my fr iends at school! Fashion, styling and shopping has always something that’s interested me from being a young girl.

I have ttw wo sides to the business, the ffiirst: Champagne and Muddy Boots, is for traditiional wool ffeedoras and summer/straw fedoras which are machine blocked by hand and ffiinished off (trr im etc) by hand. The hats are ready to wear and come in small, medium and large. It’s quite ‘countrry’, where I live, a lot of ladies buy hats for the Cheltenham Races, Chatsworth h Horse Tr ials and Chatsworth Country Fair, matched with ttw weed blazers for the country look. Where as the other side to the business, Claire Simpson Millinery (C.S.M), is more couture, Ascot, weddings etc; the hats are much more traditiional and predominantly one-off. With C.S.M. I’ve just started th his year making scarves out of couture fabr ics, Gucci for example.

What made you pick hats over any other clothing?

At the time it was becoming quite a trend and there was a new niche market for hats and fascinators. I remember when Victor ia and David Beckham visited Buckingham Palace for his OBE and she styled a beautiful one. It also became fashionable to wear the pillbox hats and fascinators, so I saw a gap in th he fashion market that I could pursue from my home in Derbyshire.

Hat making process (left) and a finished creation by Claire Simpson

Have you made a most memorable piece?

A few years ago I had a lady who bought one of my hats to wear at a horse show and it was in front of th he Queen! Un nfortunately, her horse didn’t come ffiirst so there was no photograph,

b q t watched her beautiful horse and beautiful hat. My favour ite person to have made for was actually Julia Bradbury, from Countryffiile, who’s from Shefffiield or iginally. A few years ago she was th he face for Chatsworth Countrry Fair so she bought a bespoke fedora that I made for her and also a ready-to-wear Champagne and Muddy Boots hat. I have a photo of her wear ing it next to the Duke! She was probably one of my favour ite people to work for, she was so lovely and wore it really well, she looked fantastiic. Who else have you worked with?

Locally, Kelly Clarke, a Shefffiield-based fashion designer, created made-tomeasure bespoke pieces and we’ve done fashion shows together; she’s also made

ng that I’ve styled with my hats. Haggas is a ffiine artist who started ntiing her work on beautiful silk carves and this yeear I collaborated to stock the scarf and use th hem on my hats, it was great to br ing those different elements together. hat is the typical making process?

The bespoke Claire Simpson Millinery items are all handmade using traditional he wooden hat blocks. I pull and stretch th mater ial over th he block and hand stitch it, it’s much more tiime consuming making them couture. It can take me anything between a couple of days for a small piece th hrough to bigger more technical pieces that take two weeks to over a month, it all depends on size and intrr icacy. What inspires your hat designs?

It sounds really random but it can be anything, I will be walking around a super market or watching a ffiilm and an idea just pops into my head. Sometiimes I might just be playing with h th he fabr ic and twisting things until I th tw hink ‘oh I like

that’. When I’m making a hat to a particular outffiit, the outfffiit can sometimes inspire the hat. If the outffiits very loud and colourful, you don’t want a huge hat th hat’s also got lot going on; on the ffllip side if you have a classic tailored knee-length h dress you can get away with something more ffllamboyant on your head. Because I live in the countrryside I get a lot on inspiration from my sur roundings, especially for the fedoras I make. In the garden we have had for a couple years now, a resident pheasant who ffiights off the other pheasants and leaves feathers behind. I collect those, alongside the beautiful landscapes around me which often inspire colour combinations. Will you continue millinery?

Yes! I love millinery and love anything to do with h fashion. I also appreciate that I can work from the countryside and don’t have to be running around in a fashion house in London or New York; I get a peaceful family life but also fulffiil my passion for fashion. Oh god that sounds really cor ny!

Doing all the leg work MAKING SURE THE HORSES GET OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT IS THE FARRIER. WE SPOKE TO STUART SHEPHERD ABOUT HIS SPECIALIST CAREER CHOICE AND WHY THERE’S MORE TO FARRIERY THAN HOOVES AND SHOES.

he Dodson & Hor rell Chatsworth Inter national Horse Tr ials retur n for the ffiirst time in three years this month. Thousands of people are expected to converge on the 105-acre Chatsworth Estate, owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, for a weekend of equestr ian excellence. But whilst you may marvel at the majesty of the horses on display, spare a thought for those working hard behind the scenes to make sure the animals are in the best possible condition. One of the key roles in a horse’s welfare is the far r ier, who looks after all aspects of hoof care. A qualiffiied far r ier will have detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the horse’s legs and hooves, combined with sk kiilled metal working, allowing them to tr im and balance horse’s feet as well as make and ffiit shoes for each individual horse. A far r ier also deals with injured or diseased hooves and will often work to provide remedial care working closely with vets and other equine professionals.

Stuart Shepherd grew up on a far m and always wanted to work with animals but wasn’t interested in the far ming aspect. Far r iery proved to be the perfect compromise. Here he tells us about far r iery, what it involves and the role it plays in a horse’s welfare. What is a farrier?

A far r ier is a qualiffiied person who specialises in equine foot care. How did you become one?

Growing up on a far m I used to watch my family’s far r ier come to shoe the horses. One day after I had helped sort out the horses ready for him to shoe, he offered to take me with him for some work exper ience. I have always enjoyed working outside and I ffiind it very satisfying being able to care for the animals.

far ming. Far r iery was a good compromise. I could still work outside and with animals but it is very different to far ming. How long have you been in the job?

I have worked as a qualiffiied far r ier for 18 years but including my training I have been in the trade for 24 years. What education or skills are needed to become a farrier?

A minimum of ffiive GCSEs grades A-C (or moder n equivalent), three of which must be Science, Maths and English. A four and a half year apprenticeship must then be completed, dur ing which both wr itten and practical examinations are taken. Once qualiffiied you must practice under the rules and regulations of the Far r ier’s Registration Council.

Did you always want to be a farrier?

Is there a common misconception people have about what you do?

Yes and no! I k kn new I wanted to work with animals but I wasn’t interested in

Yes, I cover most of Shefffiield and parts of the Peak Distrr ict. What’s been a career highlight for you?

What’s the best part of your job?

Helping a lame horse to become sound again. It is very rewarding to assist a horse who is suffer ing to become pain free again. Anything you dislike?

It is very physically demanding. Horses are big and some lean on yo ou while you are working, others pull and just picking up th heir feet can sometimes be

I am lucky to have great customers, some of whom I have worked with since the beginning of my career. Working with people who share my passion for equine care makes my job enjoyable. I have built great relationships with h both my customers and th he horses over the yeears. In particular, working with a horse recover ing from a ser ious accident was a career highlight, lots of time and different techniques ensured that a horse that was unlikely to have much of a future was able to get back into work and be back to being healthy and happy.

Have you worked on any racehorses?

Yes, but I only used to do amateur racehorses (point to point). How do you deal with high pressure situations?

Calmly and meth hodically. Animals pick up on stress and anxiety so it is important to stay relaxed. What advice would you give someone looking to do this job?

CHESTERFIELD ROYAL CHARITY APPEAL FOR £2MILLION HEALTH AND WELLBEING HUB ON HOSPITAL SITE. hesterffiield Royal Char ity hosted a very special evening of fundraising at Chatsworth h House for a proposed £2million Health and Wellbeing Hub – it’s most ambitious campaign to date. The brand-new Hub, which would be based on the hospital site, would be the ffiirst of its kind. Offer ing all working at the hospital from porters to radiologists, physiotherapists to cooks, ffiinancial accountants to receptiionists, a real haven to actively look after their health h and wellbeing supporting them to care for the people of Chesterffiield. The event saw the Duke of Devonshire welcoming guests in the Painted Hall alongside the char ity, including the giant ‘Webster’ duck mascot – one of the most grand and prestiigious venues in the countrry. Key businesses and organisations were invited to offer th heir support to the scheme. Ken Godber, Char ity Director, said: “At Chesterffiield Royaal Char ity, we wanted to give something back – to ‘care for the carers’ – and that’s why we appealed for local people to support us to raise th he funds for the Hub. “We are so grateful to Chatsworth House and th he Duke of Devonshire for offer ing the Painted Hall for th he occasion. We believe this was a truly magical evening – with champagne and canapes as well as speeches from the Duke and a ser ies of colleagues who

C

talked about th he great work the hospital contiinues to do, despite the ongoing challenges from Covid.” There are more than 4,500 members of staff at the hospital, who will be able to use the Hub and its services, which could include counselling rooms and complimentary th herapies as well as talking therapies and areas for group and individual reffllections after traumatic incidents, like those seen dur ing the pandemic. There is a proposed gym and multi-use games area too. Ken added: “We want to ensure that everybody at the hospital will beneffiit from th he Hub and we need everybody in the community to be involved – this isn’t just about businesses or community groups coming to Chatsworth h. We need everybody to get behind us and held raise the vital funds to make th his a reality.” Local businesses can support the appeal by becoming members of

the Cor porate Champions Club – where tailor-made packages of support can offer businesses and large organisations a direct link to th he Char ity and ensure they are recognised for their ongoing commitment. The Health and Wellbeing Hub already has a number of high-proffiile partners: As a ffllagship project, NHS Char ities Together has committed £250,000, Shefffiield Hallam University will undertake research and disseminate ffiindings and Westffiield Health further contrr ibuted £250,000, understanding the importance of such a facility and having built a reputation working with NATO, Shell and Daimler to support th heir staff.
