International FOCUS
Taking place from 17-19 May, the Chatsworth International Horse Trials will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cup - but there’s much more to enjoy over the weekend.

There will be a worldwide focus on Chatsworth International Horse Trials this year as it will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cup. This will be the second year running that the Derbyshire estate has hosted a leg of this competition, which is open to all nations around the world, consists of eight legs in total, and culminates in Boekelo in the Netherlands in October.
“We are thrilled to be asked once again to host the British leg of the National Cup and look forward to welcoming many international riders,” said event director Patricia Clifton.
The 2023 series attracted some of the world’s leading riders, including Ros Canter who had an outstanding score of 18 in the Dressage - CCI4*-S.
“This was real dressage, Izilot has really come into his own this season,” exclaimed Ros afterwards. “His ability is never in doubt – he’s a fantastic horse – but he is not straightforward at home and can be spooky. However, he has a good brain for the arena.”
French riders often fair well at Chatsworth and they were outstanding in the team competition, overhauling the British team with their superior cross-
country speed. Stephane Landois was the overall winner on the Saturday with a foot-perfect performance on the 11-year-old grey Selle Francais, Chaman Dumontceau.
David Doel, from Wiltshire, was the best British rider on Christine Lees’ quality mare, Ferro Point, and won the prize for
country time penalties.
“Chatsworth is one of my favourite places to come and very popular with owners,” said David. “It’s the premier CCI4*-S in the country and you know you’re going to get a good cross-country course. The ground conditions were testing, but at least one of us is little and lightweight – my mare scampered around easily.”
The Sunday saw young rider Lizzie Baugh score the biggest win of her career, scooping the CCI4*-S in the cross-country on her home-bred gelding, B Exclusive.
“I didn’t really mean to be so fast, as this was a prep run for Bramham,” she said at the time. “But I thought I must be positive and the horse seemed to pick up all the lines easily.”
Emma Thomas also won the prize for best under-25 rider and had the second fastest time aboard Rebecca Velarde’s Icarus X.
“He was a bit of a wild child, but he is ten now and loves his job,” said Emma. “I love it here at Chatsworth. It is so beautiful and is a proper, bold cross-country track.”
The Chatsworth International Horse Trials takes place over the weekend of 17-19 May and offers thrilling world class equestrian action, including dressage, show jumping and cross country. You can also see the starts of the future in the Dubarry
year-old classes.
Alongside the equestrian action there is plenty to keep families entertained, with a packed arena schedule that includes the Shetland Pony Grand National, Pony Club Mounted Games, falconry displays, and the The Dog and Duck Show. Children can try pottery painting and tackle a climbing wall, while family dogs can take part in the dog agility or a fun dog show.
You can also take a break from the action with a walk round the shopping village, featuring more than 100 brands offering equestrian essentials, homeware, clothing, walk, with food and drink options for all tastes and appetites.
The house, garden, farmyard and playground will be open as usual during the horse trials.

taly has many regions that produce excellent wines. Some wine producers are long-established, in very old wine producing areas. The characteristics of each vineyard help to identify and produce the high-quality wines, from a particular area and company. A good number of grape varieties are grown in Italy and include Barbera, Chardonnay, Friulano, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, Picolit, Riesling, Ribolla Gialla, Schioppettino, Sangiovese, plus several others.
Multi award-winning Vigna Petrussa is a family-run winery, located in Albana di Prepotto, a perfect wine growing area. If red wine is a preference then Vigna Petrussa, Schioppettino di Prepotto (13.5% vol) does not disappoint (me, certainly), being aged for 24 months in wood and then aged further, for 12 months, in bottle, Elegance, with just a hint of spice, is how I would describe this superb wine production. An abundance of juicy, red and dark fruits is very evident for the mouth’s pleasures and beyond. Wonderful when paired with game, roast meats, steaks and many other dishes.
For a sweet (perhaps dessert) wine requirement Vigna Petrussa, Perla Nera (15% vol) could very well be the answer. The overripe Schioppettino grapes are utilised, to great advantage, in the production of this ruby-red wine, which is aged before bottling and has impressive overtones of sweet spices, plus other

fter three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.
AThis year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It
well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local
restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.
Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

At a time where rising costs are putting a strain on the nation, it’s important that we commend and celebrate the charities doing their part to support animals who have been surrendered due to the cost-of-living crisis.

the largest animal rescue centres in South Yorkshire. Caring for animals since 1988, Thornberry Animal Sanctuary has since helped rescue and rehome around 20,000 animals, from dogs and cats to rabbits and horses. The organisation is passionate about rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming vulnerable and neglected animals.
“At Thornberry, we believe that every
animal deserves a second chance at a happy and healthy life,” said the fundraising team (FT). “We provide a safe haven for animals in need, offering them medical care, nourishment, and most importantly, love.”
Thornberry is made up of four sites. The main site, The Stables located at Todwick Road, is where most of their animals are surrendered to or brought in as strays. In order to manage the magnitude of animals being surrendered, owners are asked to complete a relinquishment form that can be found on Thornberry’s website and subsequently put on a waiting list.

“Certain animals have medical conditions or other circumstances that may pose challenges for re-homing,” said FT. “Therefore, it’s in their best interests to remain under our care. The animals have formed strong bonds with our farm team and have grown to love Thornberry as their home.”
When the animals are in their care, their dedicated team, alongside volunteers, work hard to ensure all the animals needs are catered for. With no two animals the same, each has different needs that the team assess when an animal is surrendered or rescued. Each department is committed to making the animals comfortable in their homes, well fed, watered and loved whilst
“It’s important to understand that animals rely on us every day, considering us as their family,” explained FT.
Through their farm and equine centre, the team have been able to rehome battery hens every year, and it is because of the tireless work from their staff and volunteers that Thornberry was able to rehome an incredible 700 animals last year.

“Our Thornberry café and deli offer excellent food, attracting our supporters to come down, have lunch, and shop in our charity shop, allowing them to be involved in our work and support Thornberry in various ways while having a great time,” added FT.
Fundraising and events are crucial for the sanctuary to keep operating in the way they do today and change the lives of countless animals. They have held numerous events over the years, from dog shows and horse shows to a sponsored burlesque dance and seasonal fairs for the community to enjoy. With challenge events proving to adrenaline junkies alike, they will be running an Abseil Challenge and Snowdon Challenge this year and hope to get as many supporters involved as possible.
