InWoodhouse,localbusinessowners gatheredunderthebannerofRevive Woodhousetobringeconomicactivity backtotheirareausingERFfunding. Theirapproachhasfocusedonbringing aprogrammeoftraditionaleventsback totheirmarketsquare,aswellasmaking itanicerplaceforpeopletospendtime.

AnyvisittoHassopStationneedsto includeatriptothecavernouscafe, whichhasroomfor300people,inside andout.OwnedbyDuncanand RebeccaStokessince2010,ithas undergonesomechangesoflatewiththe appointmentofanewmanageranda newheadchef.

Wearrivedforthelaunchoftheirnew autumn/wintermenu,whichincludes cafeclassicsaswellasrestaurant-quality dishes.Itwasthelatterthatheadchef DavePalfiwaskeenforustotry-we werehappytoobligeandwereseriously impressedwiththechoiceonoffer.

Davehasabackgroundworkingin hotels,recentlymovingfromTheGeorge

inHathersage.Hehasintroduceddishes suchasminutesteakandfries,Moroccan chickpeaandsweetpotatotagineand pestochickenandspinachlinguineto themenu,muchmoresubstantial-and tasty-alternativestotoasties,jacket potatoesandsandwiches.

WestartedwithtwoofDave’slighter bites-tartoftheday(£8.95)andhearty chickenbroth(£6.75).Thequiche-like tart,sundriedtomatoonthisoccasion, hadafirm,crispcaseandwasfilledwith adeliciousegg,cheeseandtomato filling.Asidesaladofdressesleavesand seedsaddedextraflavour.

Thebrothwasindeedhearty,perfect forthoseautumndays,andpackedwith chicken,barleyandvegetables.Softbread wastheidealaccompaniment.

FormainswetriedtheHomemade SteakandMonsalTrailAlePie(£14.95) andHassop’sPaprikaFishStew(£14.50). Theindividually-madepiewasstuffed withtenderbeefandvegetablesand complementedbygoodchunkychipsand excellentmushypeas.Lashingsofgravy completedthedish.

Paprikagavemyfishstewaninviting orange/redcolourthatwasoffsetbya dollopofsourcreaminthecentreofthe dish-anodtoDave’sHungarian

heritage.Thefishandvegetableshadjust therightamountofspicewithlightlytoastedsourdoughbreadonhandto mopupanyoftheremainingjuices.

“Gardencentresweredifferentanimals inthosedays,theywerealmost completelygardeningfocused,”saidNeil. “Christmaswasn’taroundasaproduct rangebutitfitsinreallywellwithusas otherwisewe’dbequietduringthattime. Nowit’sanessentialpartofourbusiness,

itkeepsenoughstaffemployedandpaid throughthewinterwhenit’squietso theyaretheretheninspringwhenwe getbusy.”

PlanningforthisChristmasstarted waybackatthestartoftheyearandat

thetimeIspoketoNeil,hewasstill puttingthefinishingtouchestothis year’sdisplay.Speakingoftrends,hesaid: “Whatwetendtofindovertheyearsis that‘traditional’tendstobecome strongerduringrecessionandnewideas

becomemorepopularoutofrecession. Wethinkthat’sbecausepeoplehunker downintoatraditionalChristmaswhen thingsareabittough,butthere’salways red,gold,silver,they’realwaysthemost popular.Andconvenienceplaysabitpart inspendinghabitstoo.

“Everyonewantsconvenience.For someyearswe’vebeenfocussingon itemsyoucantakeoutofabox,plugin andit’sChristmas,”addedNeil.“People willspendtimedecoratingthetreebut afterthat,theyhaven’tgotthetime.”

Onepartofthehomethatfamilies haveturnedparticularattentiontoin recentyearsisthefrontgarden,and we’renottalkinghugeinflatableSantas orsnowmen.“Subtlelightingandsimple coloursseemtobethewaytogonow,” saidNeil.“Lightsarequickandeasyto putout,youcanmakeahouselook Christmassyinanafternoon.”

“Oneofoursuppliershasdonea calculationwhereaparticularsetof indoorlightsmightonlycost50pforthe wholeofChristmas,”explainedNeil. “That’scompletelydifferentto20years agowhentheywereallincandescent bulbs.Now,it’sallLED,alllowvoltage andtheylastfor50,000hours-Idon’t knowhowmanyChristmasesthatwill cover!”

Aswellasdecorationsandgifts, Ferndalestockbothrealandartificial treesandthecoffeeshop,recently awardedMidlandsCoffeeShopofthe Year,willbeintroducingafestivemenu.

WhilstChristmasmightbean importanttimeforFerndaleGarden Centre,Neil’struepassionliesin gardeningandissomethinghedeveloped aloveforatayoungage.

“Istartedgardeningasayoung teenager-Ididn’ttellanymates!”he laughs.“Thankfullyit’sbecomemore coolveryrecentlyforthatagegroup, theydon’tfeelthattheyhavetohideit
