PRECIOUS MEMORIES REMEMBER LOVED ONES YOU HAVE LOST THIS CHRISTMAS WITH A MESSAGE ON THE MEMORIAL TREE AT JOHN FAIREST. hristmas is a wonderful time for families to get together, but it can also be a sad reminder of those family members and friends that are no longer with us. From Thursday 1 December, there will be a memorial Christmas tree in the reception area of the funeral home, where clients past and present can write messages of remembrance on stars and attach them to the tree. All messages from previous years have been wrapped up and put under the tree. Janice Mason and Tracey Wilson of the Abbey Lane team understand that every person is different, and, as such, every funeral they arrange is a unique tribute to a unique life. “Our main aim is to look

C

after our families. When clients first come to make arrangements, they are at their lowest point. “We promise to plan everything with clarity, respect and reassurance and to listen, advise and carry you through all your options before, during and after the arrangements.” John Fairest is one of the most established and trusted funeral directors in Sheffield, they have had a presence on Penistone Road North for over 100 years, whilst the Abbey Lane branch opened its doors in 2007. John Fairest take care of every aspect of funeral arrangements, providing everything from a fleet of limousines, to the music for the funeral. They ensure you get a personal service and that you deal with the same member of staff throughout. John Fairest also provide help with arranging flowers, obituary notices, online memorials and catering. John Fairest is one of the largest providers of pre-paid funeral plans in the city. This allows you to plan your funeral in advance and ensures that your funeral will be carried out as you want it. By being prepared today, you will be helping your loved ones tomorrow. They also do monumental work, including removing and replacing of memorials, cleaning and renovating existing memorials, adding an additional inscription, and supplying

new memorials. And have a book of remembrance and a varied selection of keepsakes in the form of cremation urns, silver fingerprints and ashes in glass jewellery. All the teams at John Fairest Funeral Homes are available to help and give advice at all times. Contact them at one of their branches (below.

SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service, fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors and conservatories

Sheffield Window Centre has a soft spot for abandoned pets, raising money for Rain Rescue

Leading from the front AFTER 42 YEARS IN BUSINESS, FAMILY-RUN SHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE CONTINUES TO MOVE WITH THE TIMES. t was back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody topped the charts, that Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) was founded. Fast-forward 42 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of SWC in the early eighties, is managing director... and with his four children involved, this is a true family business. As the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the most reliable name they look for. SWC was the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which? and they have been named the UK’s “Installer of the Year” at the G Awards – the most prestigious awards in the UK window industry. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975. SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in key personnel to meet the ever-increasing demand for high quality products, new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. And the Rockingham Street showroom has recently undergone substantial renovations – introducing an exciting new product display. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘no pressure policy’. Whether it be price, product or service, they can’t be beaten, and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester.

I

The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour. Frames are available in a range of colours including wood grain effects. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain heat. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know it’s secure. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. Don’t be misled by the name – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service, fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors and conservatories, suitable for year round use. Offering a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process.

And that’s not all – SWC is also applying its expertise to making a difference in the local community. Supporting a number of worthy causes, including Rain Rescue, a Rotherham-based rescue centre helping pets in true crisis. Sheffield Window Centre has a soft spot for abandoned pets – several staff and family members have adopted dogs from Rain Rescue – and as a company they have donated windows and doors to keep the charity’s animals warm and secure. They also donated a conservatory from the showroom, which was auctioned and raised £1,700. At Wards, a whole host of trees are available from the week beginning 20 November, ranging from approximately four feet to nine feet tall. you're looking for. The team are on hand to make sure your Christmas tree gets home in one piece - whether potted or cut, and whatever the size, the netting service will make even the biggest trees fit into the smallest spaces. Or alternatively, the distribution team can deliver your chosen tree to your door. Ward's also offer a stunning collection of houseplants, arranged and potted in attractive containers, and traditional holly wreaths, as well as an array of flowering and berried plants. And while we all know that poinsettias are conventionally scarlet at Christmas, Ward's also stock a selection of colours, including pink and cream - for a new take on tradition. It's not just Christmas trees and foliage that Ward's do best; the garden centre is second to none with their impressive selection of decorations and gifts for the whole family. They stock everything from candles, toiletries, stylish clothing and the ever-popular Equilibrium jewellery range, to a vast range of children’s toys, including Orange Tree wooden toys, and a selection of enchanting Lemax holiday and Christmas villages. Which alongside vivid buildings and delightful figurines, are sure to capture the true spirit of the holiday season and bring out the happy child in all. Once you’ve purchased your gifts, you can also beautifully present them in luxury wrapping paper, which can be purchased from the gift shop. And why not treat the foodie in your family to a personalised hamper? There are many alternative goodies to choose from, including an assortment of ‘Free From’ foods, and a member of the team will pack and wrap it all in an attractive gift box ready to present to the lucky recipient. With all that Ward's has to offer, why not make a day of your visit? Santa Claus will once again be taking up residence in his grotto during weekends throughout December. Every child will receive a gift and all the proceeds will be split between local

charities. And for that wellearned break, The Old Potting Shed Coffee Shop and Restaurant, which has once again been awarded a five-star hygiene rating, offers an impressive selection of meals, including a delicious festive menu and luxury festive afternoon tea. *Diners are advised to pre-order from the Christmas menu. Bookings are now being taken. From the sparkle at the top of the tree to the handpicked presents beneath it, everything is under one roof at Ward's Nurseries and Garden Centre. So avoid the last minute run to the shops - with the hunt for an elusive parking space - and make your entire Christmas shopping experience a pleasure.

Winter walks at Longshaw & Castleton After being sat around for a few days, stuffing our faces with turkey and chocolates, a walk is the perfect way to blow off the cobwebs. Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors are particularly beautiful at this time of year. Wrap up warm and follow the course of Burbage Brook through the ancient Padley Wood. Enjoy a gentle winter walk alongside a tumbling stream, through atmospheric meadows and winter woodland. What’s more, the shop and tearoom at Longshaw will also be open to refuel walkers between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. The Hope Valley and the village of Castleton are even more vibrant over the winter months. Christmas trees decorate the historic terraces of Castleton, which is an ideal base for starting walks to Mam Tor, Edale and Lose Hill. The cast of this year’s Mother Goose production outside the Lyceum Theatre

Comic timing NO LYCEUM PANTO IS COMPLETE WITHOUT ‘SHEFFIELD LEGEND’ DAMIAN WILLIAMS. HANNAH SANDERS SPOKE TO THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE DAME WHO IS APPEARING IN HIS TENTH PRODUCTION AT THE SHEFFIELD THEATRE. antomime Dame and comedy actor Damian Williams has his audiences rolling in the aisles and gasping for breath – so much so that he should come with a health warning. His comic antics, perfect timing and great wit leave the audience laughing uncontrollably, and this year’s pantomime of Mother Goose promises to be no different. Damian is celebrating his tenth production at the Lyceum Theatre, and this year they’ll be bringing the fun-filled tale to life for the first time in Sheffield. Mother Goose is a tale of an old woman who meets a magical goose that lays golden eggs. She becomes rich beyond her wildest dreams, and has everything she ever wants apart from beauty and youth – will she be tempted by the offer of both in exchange for her prized feathered friend? The creative team behind the production is Evolution, the same group who brought the smash hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and, will not only see the return of Sheffield legend Damian, but Jake Canuso (ITV’s Benidorm), Cara Dudgeon (Somewhere in Time), and Andy Day (CBeebies’ Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures). We asked Damian what we can expect

from this year’s pantomime, what attracts him to the Dame and what makes a good panto.

everyone to not like you. It’s a great part for audience reactions.

What can we expect from Mother Goose?

What do you think is the key to a good panto?

The panto this year is brand new. We have a new set, costumes and script and it’s great that it is something new for the Lyceum. I’ve seen some of the drawings and sketches – it is going to be spectacular. They’ve thrown a lot of things in to this – I think it might be our best yet.

A good story, one that keeps the children and adults entertained. You need to make sure the script provokes laughter and includes catchy songs. As it’s a family show it’s key to make sure there is something in there that appeals to everyone.

What do you enjoy most about panto?

I love the atmosphere in the theatre at Christmas, it’s always buzzing especially in Sheffield. The city has a really nice feel to it, and the audience brings so much excitement. What appeals to you the most about the Dame?

The Dame is part of the audience, she gets away with murder and is constantly talking and engaging with everyone. It is the best comedy role and I just love playing her. If you weren’t playing the Dame, what role would you like?

I quite enjoy playing the villain, as that is how I started. It is such a contrasting role to the Dame as you go for the “boo’s” and want

Why do you think it is important to get the younger generation involved interested in the theatre?

It’s important to get young people back into the theatre to keep them thriving. The panto is sometimes someone’s first experience of live theatre, so hopefully it will encourage them to come back. With lots of audience participation, impressive special events and brand new sets, Mother Goose promises to be an egg-cellent pantomime and perfect festive treat for the whole family. The show is running from 8 December to 7 January, to book visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.

CHRISTMAS

AS FIRST LEAD ROLES GO, THERE’S PERHAPS NONE BIGGER THAN DOROTHY IN THE WIZARD OF OZ. GABRIELLE BROOKES CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CURTAIN TO OPEN... BY HANNAH SANDERS. oin Dorothy and all her friends for the glorious technicolour production of the timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz. Skip along the yellow brick road and journey through Munchkinland all the way to Oz. Gabrielle Brookes will be taking to the stage as Dorothy in her first lead role. She trained at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and has appeared in numerous musicals on the West End, and more recently as Becca in Everybody Loves Jamie at Sheffield’s’ Crucible Theatre. Here Gabrielle talks about what we can expect from the musical and why it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts.

J

How did it feel when you were cast as Dorothy, and how do you relate to the character?

I couldn’t have been more excited. The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy holds a special place in my heart. She is optimistic and wideeyed which is 100 per cent me. She sort of has her head in the clouds and values friendship and family above anything, so I can relate to the character. What can we expect from the performance?

A lot of joy, magic and heart. Our director, Rob Hastie, stressed to us that first and foremost we are telling a great story for families. There will also be beautiful costumes and an incredible set. Story-wise you will be getting a classic but there will be a few little twists thrown in, however you will have to wait and see. What are you most looking forward to about the production?

I love being in Sheffield, as I think the audiences bring such warmth and heart to a

Gabrielle is no stranger to Sheffield, after starring in the 2017 production of Everybody Loves Jamie at The Crucible

performance, so I am really excited to share the story with them. A friend also made me realise that although it is such an iconic story, there will be lots of children who won’t have seen it, meaning I’ll be their first Dorothy, which is amazing. What do you think is the key to a good musical?

Although it is great having all the bells and whistles – I love that part – putting the story first, and what you want your message to be is key. It’s also important to make the audience smile.

Why do you think it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts?

Above all the arts brings people together. It is a way to tell our own stories and allows us to understand each other. For children it is a great thing to develop their confidence but I think at age any the arts are important as we need to be able to understand each other’s tales. Great getaway PICTURESQUE CHESHIRE MAKES FOR A VERY RELAXING BREAK, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. elaxing on plush leather seats, in front of the cast iron stove while enjoying a tipple – or two – was an ideal way to admire the rustic chandelier and array of violins balanced delicately on wooden beams along with a picture-perfect view of blooming-foliage and lush green fields, all making for a quintessentially British setting. The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms is nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, near the River Dane. With its rustic exterior and climbing ivy, it blends perfectly into its surroundings, creating the perfect British getaway. The hotel is run by Flat Cap Hotels and inside it’s spacious and well thought out with three comfortable lounges, contemporary outdoor dining area, games room as well as light and airy conservatory area and country house style restaurant. We didn’t want our stay to end. The hotel has six exquisite signatures rooms, each with its own quirky touch such as a large chess board, which as competitive people, we took full advantage of. With its shabby-chic décor, including checked cushions, a deep blue chest, vintage gold mirror and finished with a delicately painted ‘do not disturb’ sign hung on the door, the room lived up to expectations as luxurious retreat from home.

The bedrooms are well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours came with a huge bath and a rainmaker shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your glad rags before experiencing The Vicarage’s restaurant. They source their produce locally with a menu driven by the gardener’s foragers, farmers and suppliers of Cheshire, and we were blown away. Stand-out dishes included pan-seared prawns in chilli butter, Cornish crab with a chilli and lime jam, Vicarage burger and chocolate and strawberry brulée with pastry tuille. Service throughout was immaculate. The dining area was bustling all evening, and I immediately fell for the rustic décor. From a wall of antique mirrors, to fabric animals busts, riding hats, plush velvet seats and family crests hung on the wooden beams, I felt like I was Elizabeth Bennett enjoying a weekend away with Mr Darcy. After a restful night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast in the conservatory was just what we needed before taking a tenminute drive to Knutsford to wander around the many independent shops, enjoying the cobbled streets and brightly painted facades, before lunch at another of the family-run group’s hotels – The Courthouse. The former Crown Court has been converted into the Barristers Restaurant and

Rooftop Gardens, and the refurbishment emulates the building’s history and grandeurstyle. Sitting where the judge used to reside, looking down on the defendant – now the fully-stocked bar framed with towering plants – was a fun experience whilst we enjoyed a luxurious lunch. Stand-out dishes included Atlantic prawn and avocado sandwich, chocolate tart with caramel gel and Tatin with pineapple and caramelised puff pastry. Service was outstanding and we were treated to a tour of the grand building. The lush surroundings of The Vicarage make for the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful and memorable weekend away, whilst enjoying the close-by historic town of Knutsford with its iconic Gaskell Tower.

TRAVEL

Join the Crewe HISTORIC NORTHUMBERLAND HAS PLENTY TO OFFER, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR – PERFECT FOR A SHORT STOPOVER. at next to a huge fireplace, surrounded by stone walls and a wooden beamed ceiling, sipping ale from tankards, this could easily be an iconic scene from Game of Thrones. But we were not at Castle Black on the icy northern border of a fictional land, we were at Lord Crewe Arms, on the border of Northumberland. Built in 1165, this hotel was originally part of Blanchland Abbey, home to the White Canons of the Roman Catholic Order. These monks famously dressed in white and as blanche is French for white, the village became known as Blanchland. This building was originally the Abbot’s lodge, guest house, kitchens and dining room, and the gardens served as cloisters for the monks of the Northumbrian moors. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and was bought by the Radcliffes, then the Forster family, before being taken over by Lord Nathaniel Crewe in 1708. And if you like a good ghost story, they say Dorothy Forster still walks the abbey to this day. Back in the land of the living, hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy the Lord Crewe Arms’ Crypt Bar, the cosy adjoining Derwent room, or sit next to the afore mentioned grand fireplace – just the thing in these colder months. Upstairs is the more formal Bishops dining room, but you can eat in the casual

S

surroundings of the lower fireplace room if you wish. The evening we arrived, my partner enjoyed an Isle of Wight salad with Langley Farm cottage cheese to start and a juicy flat iron steak for his main, while I had chilled, white gazpacho, followed by tender roast suckling pig porchetta with whipped polenta and spinach. Back in our room, I relished the chance to dip into the deep bathtub and cosy up to the wood burner with a cup of tea, before settling into a sumptuous double bed. The next morning we gazed out of the dining room window at the gorgeous gardens, whilst eating breakfast. I had eggs royale with salmon that had been smoked and cured on the premises. The hotel is also proud to grow its own vegetables and has a biomass shed to generate its own energy. And it’s not just a great place for a leisurely stay. There are also brilliant facilities in the adjoining Gatehouse for business conferences, containing a meeting room, sitting room and kitchen. Once we had checked out, the receptionist suggested several walks, but the bottom line was, “Whichever direction you walk in, you’ll get to the North Pennines!” With Derwent Reservoir just a couple of country miles up the road, the Crewe is wellplaced for sailing and water sports, as well as cycling, fishing and shooting. It’s also a great base for day trips to the Beamish Museum

and Hadrian’s Wall, or even for a shopping trip to Newcastle. On our walk, we came across a chicken crossing the road – a sign we were truly in the country, and the ruins of the old Shildon Engine House – a symbol of the area’s industrial past. Back in the village, we perused the traditional sweets and the homemade cards and gifts at a local shop, before going to the Monk Tearoom, an old school room-turnedcafé, for a pot of tea before returning home. So if you want to feel like the king of the castle, venture over the North Pennines or explore the nearby museums, Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is a cosy and comfortable home from home. What’s more, they have been named ‘Inn of the Year 2018’ by the Good Pub Guide.

Details: Accommodation and full Northumbrian breakfast is from £119 per double room. Offer: Readers are offered 20 per cent discount off events at The Gatehouse (valid until 1 March 2018, excluding Valentine’s Day). To qualify please book direct on 01434 677100 and quote RMC Media. MOTORING

LUXURY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME IN THIS MONTH’S MOTORING ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Six-figure luxury Customers make a point Since Maserati’s first ever SUV – the Levante – was first released to the public, it has only ever been available with a diesel engine in the UK. Maserati, with a diesel engine? Surely not. Thankfully, Maserati has listened to its fanbase and has now released a petrol version. Named the Levante S, it’ll be powered by a Ferrari engineered 3.0-litre V6 producing 430hp which no doubt will haul this majestic automotive vehicle to a top speed of 164mph. It’ll achieve the 062mph run in 5.2 seconds. Power is transferred through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The engine is made at the Ferrari factory in Maranello. Two trim levels available: GranLusso trim and GranSport trim. Available to order now. Priced from £70,775.

New special edition Audi Q7 ranges are dripping with extras

The all-new Mercedes S-Class Coupe has finally gone on sale in the UK. There are three different models to choose from – the S 560, S 63 and S 65. At £103,715, the S560 is the ‘entry level’ variant in the range. Replacing the old S500 model, the S560 introduces a new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol unit capable of producing 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The S 63 starts from £127,515 and comes with a 612hp 4.0-litre V8. The S 65 comes with a monstrous 630hp 6.0litre V12 unit costing £189,615. As standard there is a host of features including: wireless phone charging, Airmatic air suspension, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 19-inch alloy wheels. S 63s and S 65s are even more luxurious.

Turn it up to 11 After the release of the DB11 coupe to mark the start of a new chapter for Aston Martin, we finally have the DB11 Volante – the open-top variant of the luxurious GT car. Powered exclusively by the same 4.0litre V8 engine found in the hard-top, it’ll produce 503hp. As with every Aston Martin, there is an extensive array of interior options to make for an exceptional scope for personalisation, enabling all customers to design a car which is tailored to their wishes. As the DB11 was the first car to be built in partnership with Mercedes-Benz, the car will be as reliable as any other German-built manufacturer, something which Aston Martin wasn’t famed for. Prices from £159,000 with deliveries expected in spring 2018. 48 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS

PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD, LOOKS BACK ON A JAM-PACKED 12 MONTHS FOR THE TOWN. s the words in that old song say, ‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’. The town lights are on and your tree may well be up. Love it or hate it, Christmas is definitely upon us. So it’s at this time of year that I like to

A

take a moment to look back over the last 12 months and appreciate the positive year we have had. As a town, it’s been jam-packed. We’ve seen significant progress with local developments such as Peak Resort, Walton Works, Chesterfield Waterside, and Northern Gateway. We’ve also celebrated the town’s success with the aptly named Celebrate Chesterfield, Retail Awards, Made in Chesterfield, Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards and become the UK’s first Apprentice Town‌ amongst countless other achievements and celebrations. Many of these celebrations are held as part of our inward investment campaign, designed to keep the town not only surviving, but thriving. Small Business Saturday is another key date in the calendar and it seems apt that this takes place at the end of the year – on Saturday 2 December to be exact. Although a national celebration, Small Business Saturday is a great

opportunity for us all to recognise and support Chesterfield’s small businesses by using them. And what better opportunity, than at Christmas? Chesterfield’s food and drink scene is thriving, and this year’s Food and Drink Awards provided proof of that. Three of the awards were scooped by two of Chesterfield’s newest bars, and in the last few weeks, at least three more restaurants and bars have opened in the town. Keep your eye on these venues at next year’s awards. The town’s retail sector also paints a similar picture of success with new independent and chain stores opening on the High streets in time for Christmas shopping. With the market, town centre, Chatsworth Road, Whittington Moor and the retail parks, I think it’s fair to say that Chesterfield has Christmas very well covered this year. Personally, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has shopped local over the past year. You have personally contributed to the growth of local businesses and the town. Let’s all do our bit this Christmas – remember to shop, eat and drink local.
