SS Flooring

High praise It’s the choice, the prices and the great service that impress customers and keep them coming back to Layers Flooring.

W

ith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things

around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t

get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

Dispelling myths Why there’s more to Calabria than meets the eye.

Y

ou may think you know all there is to know about Glumangate’s authentic Italian restaurant, Calabria. Since it first opened five years ago, we’ve not been shy in telling you all about how Vittorio ‘Vic’ Risorto, his brother Sev and their Calabrian family have not only made Chesterfield their home but also brought a slice of their home country along with them. Open for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and dinner, they serve a beautiful selection of dishes, made using the highest quality ingredients from carefully selected local suppliers and Italian food and drink merchants. And what’s more, it’s not nearly as expensive as you might think. Take, for example, the fixed price menu, available Tuesday to Thursday evening at just £19.95 for two courses or £22.95 for three. On it you’ll find a choice of 12 dishes including starters such as chicken terrine

Exclusive Southside offer Show this voucher for a free glass of wine, bottle of beer or soft drink per person (up to four per table). Available Monday to Thursday lunch (from 12pm) and dinner (from 6pm) until the end of April 2015

with toasted Altamura and tomato salsa, mains likes pan-seared salmon with peasant potatoes, green beans and a caper butter sauce, and delicious desserts such as honey panna cotta with orange polenta biscuit. Next time you fancy a night off from the kitchen or a midweek treat, Calabria is ready and waiting to whisk you away into a world of supreme Italian cuisine without blowing the budget. Over on the a la carte menu, starters begin at £5.70 and include delights such as confit duck pila with crostini, blood orange and spring onion (£6.95). Pastas and risottos are available in two sizes and there’s a divine selection of meat, fish and vegetarian mains (or ‘secondi’). If chicken involtino with thyme fondant potato, braised chicken leg cannelloni, roasted root vegetables and red wine jus (£15.75), rack of lamb with rosemary potato terrine, garlic and parsley puree, and purple sprouting broccoli (£19.95), or pan-fried sea bass with saffron potatoes, clams and seafood broth (£17.50) tickle your tastebuds, you’ve come to the right place. And if you do want to splash out, there are exceedingly fine wines to match the fine food. But with prices starting at just £16.50 for a more standard tipple, you needn’t break the bank. In addition to the usual lunch menu, a new Calabria Tapas Menu has been

introduced, served between 12noon and 3pm. Share a smattering of these dishes among friends or order two or three to yourself and enjoy delicacies such as cured meats with fig purée (£5.50), mushroom, goats cheese and thyme arancini (£4.95), or king prawns with lemon mayonnaise and the ‘wonder ingredient’ ‘nduja, a traditional Calabrian speciality made with pork, paprika, chilli and olive oil (£5.95). Along with fabulous food, you’ll experience service with a personal touch that is second to none. Famed for their warm welcome and exceptional attention to detail, the staff at Calabria pride themselves on making every customer feel like part of the extended Risorto family. If you’re one of the few who haven’t been to Calabria already, you don’t know what you’re missing. Give it a go and, like the many regulars who have already fallen in love with this Italian gem, your first visit certainly won’t be your last. SS Easter

Best for... dark chocolate decadence Heston from Waitrose golden egg, £20 for 270g A classy black box with a simple inscription sent us wild with anticipation before we broke into the most mysterious egg of our selection. And, once inside, we were even more impressed. A shiny golden egg concealed the most tantalising white chocolate eggs – each imbued with a zingy milk chocolate and mandarin ganache – all nestled on a bed of edible (sugar paper) straw. It was oh-so Heston and we loved every bit of it.

C

reme Eggs have been unseasonably gracing the supermarket shelves since early January – and don’t get us started on the controversial Cadbury’s shake-up. But don’t let that mild annoyance distract you from the joyful fact

that Easter is finally now upon us. And that means it’s time to start checking out which eggs will make the grade this year. Fortunately, you don’t have to buy and sample every chocolate treat available as our panel has done the hard work for you. Whether you’re buying for the kids, for

Best for... white chocolate lovers

your other half or just as a well-deserved treat for yourself, there’s something to suit the occasion. Read on to find out which egg took the top spot and which fell short of the mark. Words: Stephanie Burns

Best for... fun Nestle Smarties egg hunt, £3 for 140g

Hotel Chocolat white chocolate scrambled egg, £15 for 150g This thick, creamy white chocolate egg was an instant hit with the panel, and the intricate decoration was a beautiful bonus. Add in velvety-smooth praline housed in thick white chocolate shells for the accompanying chocolates and we were in heaven. A very close second.

SOUTHSIDE 14

While the quality of the chocolate won’t blow you away, the kids will relish the opportunity to hunt around the garden for these eight brightly wrapped eggs. And when they do track them down, a gentle shake will reveal not only a chocolate egg but also a smattering of mini Smarties to reward their efforts.

Best for... a super sweet tooth

Best for... variety

Thorntons caramel cheesecake egg, £15 for 448g Not for the faint hearted, this indulgent egg takes inspiration from a classic dessert. The caramel cheesecake reveals itself not just in the explosion on the front of the egg, but throughout the shell with flecks of crunchy biscuit and caramel delighting at every bite.

Marks & Spencer chocolate egg selection, £10 for 195g If you’re buying for someone who enjoys a variety of flavours, M&S has the answer. Milk chocolate with popcorn and popping candy, white chocolate and raspberry pavlova, and milk chocolate butter crunch make up this tasty trio.

Best for... milk chocolate lovers

Best for... something different

Green & Blacks tasting collection egg, £17.99 for 525g

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Belgian white chocolate Easter egg with pistachios, £6 for 220g

Known for its high quality chocolate (37 per cent cocoa solids, no less) and intense flavours, Green & Blacks have a loyal following. This collection shows why. Two full-sized bars of chocolate – one sea salt, one butterscotch, both divine and packed with flavour – accompany a truly delicious milk chocolate egg. A little on the expensive side, but worth every penny.

Best for... the kids Tesco Doug the dinosaur, £4 for 200g There are few more exciting prospects than animal-shaped chocolate when you’re a youngster – and Doug the Dinosaur certainly ticks that novelty box. But while the super-thick chocolate makes for an indulgent treat, kids will need a strong adult to help break Doug’s incredibly tough shell.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

At first glance, the panel was hugely impressed with this beautiful egg. The gentle green hue, the nutty flecks present throughout the shell and the promise of a good pistachio hit got our mouths watering. But, upon tasting, we were sadly disappointed with the too-subtle pistachio flavour. A nice white chocolate egg but it won’t satisfy serious nut lovers.

Best for... the eco-conscious Montezuma organic milk chocolate eco egg with butterscotch, £7.99 for 150g Though the lure of butterscotch got our tastebuds tingling, we were let down by the very subtle flavour. That said, the chocolate was creamy, it wasn’t too sweet and the flecks of butterscotch offered a welcome crunch. We were also impressed by the environmentally friendly, biodegradable sleeve.

Who will be our 2015 winners? We’re on the hunt for the region’s best eateries. Here’s how you can join the race.

C

alling all restaurants – it’s time to make sure you are in the running for the big prizes in the 2015 Restaurant Awards. These are the longest running and most prestigious dining awards in Sheffield and North Derbyshire. The winners will be announced at a special dinner at Baldwins Omega on Monday 8 June and our judges are already out and about, checking on the early pace setters and searching for culinary excellence. For the owners and hard-working staff of all the nominated restaurants our awards dinner is an opportunity to celebrate the region’s excellent range of dining out venues. If you own a restaurant in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and you don’t want to miss out, now is the time to act. All restaurants who have a food review in Southside or our sister magazine Westside between April 2014 and May 2015 will automatically be considered for an award in one of the categories. To arrange a review in Southside, simply contact publishing manager Sally Wragg by email at sally.wragg@regionalmagazine.co.uk or telephone her on 0114 250 6300.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE AND YOU COULD BE A WINNER TOO!

Cast your vote The Westside Readers’ Choice award cuts across all boundaries. Whether your favourite restaurant is a fine dining venue, a classy café or something in between, all votes are equal. We know our readers are a discerning bunch and the announcement of this particular prize is always a highlight of our evening. Cast your vote now by visiting our website – www.regionalmagazine.co.uk – and follow the link. All entries will go into a prize draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant on us. All votes must include a home address and contact details; multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. Closing date: Friday 8 May.

Join our Judging Panel The search is on to find one reader to join with our judges to eat at some of the region’s finest restaurants, as we decide which venue should be named as Westside Restaurant of the Year. You will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. There’s also a place for you at the Westside table on the night of the awards. Sounds tempting? To apply for a place on our judging panel, go to www.regionalmagazine.co.uk and click on Competitions. Include your full name and contact details and tell us in no more than 150 words what you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Westside’s Restaurant of the Year. Closing date: Monday 13 April.

Come dine with us If any readers would like to attend the 2015 Westside Restaurant Awards Dinner at Baldwins Omega on Monday 8 June, tickets cost £49.50 per person. The price includes a five-course meal, welcome drinks and wine. Contact Martin Edwards at martin.bookprojects@regionalmagazine.co.uk

Words: Hannah Pearson

In safe hands

After a family recommendation, Kate Green and her partner were more than happy with the service offered by Dronfield Carpets and Floors.

B

uying your first house together is an exciting experience for any young couple and decorating helps you to put your stamp on the place and make it truly feel

like home. Kate Green and Rob Coyle moved into their first home last year, at the new Waverley development on the site of the old Orgreave pit, near Catcliffe. The site is still in the early stages of a 20year development of stunning modern houses, which will ultimately include shops, a doctors and dental surgery, alongside the newly-built pub and children’s playground. The eco houses all feature solar panels, top quality insulation and a free Travel South Yorkshire Pass that is renewed every year to encourage residents to use public transport. To complement the stylish, modern exterior, Kate and Rob chose Dronfield Carpets & Floors to install sleek flooring throughout their new home. “We knew we wanted a wood-effect vinyl tile downstairs but, as the house is new and has such a contemporary look, we couldn’t go for an antique or industrial style,” says Kate. “We looked at loads of styles and brought samples home to match to our new sofa. The showroom in Dronfield has a really impressive collection, which gave us a lot of inspiration.” Kate and Rob eventually settled on Colonia vinyl tiles in ‘Virginia Oak’, which pleasantly

SOUTHSIDE 20

surprised them by how warm the flooring was underfoot. The new wood-effect floor was laid throughout the living room, dining room, kitchen, downstairs toilet, pantry and family bathroom, flowing seamlessly throughout the house. For the stairs, landing and two of the bedrooms, the couple chose an Associated Weavers twist carpet in ‘Wild Mushroom’. Kate’s mum had already purchased the same carpet and had it fitted by Dronfield Carpets & Floors, so they knew it was a good choice and they would be in safe hands. Part of the appeal is that it is a Stainaway carpet, so it is very easy to keep clean – something to consider with the couple’s adorable young cats Marvin and Margot. However, Kate and Rob’s favourite addition to their new home has to be the carpet they chose for the master bedroom. “As soon as we saw it in the showroom, we fell in love with this carpet and knew we wanted it in our home. It is so soft and luxurious – your feet just sink into it,” says Kate. The Abingdon Stainfree Emperor carpet is pure luxury and the gorgeous ‘Pewter’ colour perfectly matches the contemporary style and

neutral colour theme throughout the house. “Throughout the whole process, everyone was really helpful and we are so happy with how the house looks now. “Dronfield Carpets & Floors offer real value for money and we felt completely comfortable having them in our home. “They were so accommodating working around our schedule and even moved our appointment date forwards when they had a cancellation, as they knew we were so keen to get the flooring sorted. I couldn’t recommend them enough.” Dronfield Carpets & Floors 120 Sheffield Road, Dronfield, S18 2GE Tel: 01246 292391 www.dronfieldcarpetsandfloors.co.uk

ove it or hate it, Marsala will be omnipresent this year, after being named Pantone’s ‘Colour of the Year’. Rich, decadent and full-bodied, Marsala makes for an elegant statement colour when used on its own or as a stylish accent. According to the brand’s colour experts, Marsala is a “naturally robust and earthy, wine red hue that tastefully embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness”. After the success of Pantone’s previous winners – Emerald in 2013 and last year’s Radiant Orchid – you can expect Marsala to be popping up everywhere in interior design and home furnishings this year.

The lady of the lamps Rachel Ludlam tells Hannah Pearson how she has turned a flash of inspiration into a novel business idea.

I

nspiration can be found in the unlikeliest of places and, with hard work and a spark of creativity, the smallest idea can grow into something great. That is certainly the case for Rachel Ludlam who, in just six months, has turned a quirky idea into an innovative business. It all started last year when Rachel was decorating the family home. Struggling to find any unusual table lamps that really caught her eye, she thought she might as well try making her own. “I found a glass bottle of mine and my husband’s favourite French rosé, which was a good size and an unusual shape,” she says. “I filled it with corks that I had collected from the bottles we drank at special occasions, such as family holidays, birthdays and christenings.” Sensing that she may have stumbled across an exciting idea, she made a further two lamps. Having struggled to find a lamp that complemented the guest bedroom, Rachel laboriously hand painted hundreds of marbles to fill the lamps. The result was so stunning it prompted the idea that her newfound hobby could be a potential business idea. And so Ardan Designs was born. The journey from Rachel’s initial idea to the creation of Ardan Designs, however, is a true example of trial and error – that includes many smashed bottles along the way! “Ardan Designs was never a conscious business decision. It was just a spark of interest that spiraled very quickly and I figured it out as I went along,” says Rachel. “The bottles must be drilled underwater as otherwise they get so hot that they can shatter. I learnt that the hard way and ended up with a kitchen covered in glass,” she laughs.

SOUTHSIDE 34

“It was an interesting but messy process.” Rachel then fills the bottles with corks, shells, marbles, recycled glass or even shotgun cartridges. Each design is handmade and it can take weeks to hand wash the materials and allow them enough time to dry. The lamp is then wired and PAT-tested for safety. Keen to find out what other people thought of her designs, Rachel set up a stall at Hassop Hall Hotel’s annual Christmas shopping event last year. The lamps proved to be very popular and even caught the attention of some industry experts. As a result, two of Rachel’s designs – Nassa Noir and Star Limpets – are now in stock at Sheffield’s prestigious interiors store, Ponsford, on London Road. With 12 lamps already available, the next development for Ardan Designs is to use some exciting new materials. Rachel will soon be receiving a delivery of mother of pearl, which should make for some beautiful new designs. Her Cristal Jeroboam lamp already features such a rare shell that she has only been able to make four lamps due to a lack of supply. “It is a lot of fun sourcing such unusual materials and I like to use natural substances and neutral colours as I think they suit most homes. “I also supply the lamp shades and light bulbs to make it as simple for the customer as possible, although I can commission bespoke shades if they wish. “Ardan Designs has been a real adventure and I’m excited to see where it will go next.” To find out more about Ardan Designs, phone Rachel on 07977 993906 or email rachel@ardandesigns.co.uk. Be beautiful

It’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. Hannah Pearson has some top tips to get you started.

A

fter a long and chilly winter where snow fell as far as February, it’s hard to believe that spring is now just around the corner. The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and we’re starting to think about shaking off our woolly layers and getting back outside. But with this flurry of cheerful activity comes the harsh reality that we may have neglected our homes during those chilly months – which becomes apparent when we see our home in the natural sunlight. A layer of dust seems to have accumulated on every surface, the windows and roof have suffered from the lashings of rain, the garden path is overgrown with weeds – and how long has that stain been on the carpet? It looks vaguely like a mince pie. The time has come to spring clean! No one looks forward to the annual deep clean, but when the flowers start blooming you know it’s time to drag your house out of the winter blues and give your home some much-needed TLC. With a little elbow grease and a lot of love your house can be beautiful again and have that fresh spring look. Follow these simple steps for a happier home.

SOUTHSIDE 36

Check the roof With heavy rain, chilly snow and stormy winds up and down the country, your roof will have suffered a beating this winter. As spring approaches, it is essential to check that no serious damage has been done. This can be done yourself or, if the thought of climbing onto the roof leaves you feeling queasy, you can hire a professional roofer instead. If any tiles have been displaced, make sure you get them fixed now – you’ll be glad you did when the April showers arrive.

Clear drains and gutters The onslaught of rain we saw this winter will have washed fallen leaves straight into your gutters. If left untreated, clogged up drain pipes and guttering can cause flooding, so make sure you give them a thorough clearing out. Also, check for any cracks or wear and tear that might need fixing.

Check windows Painting and wood-staining Winter storms can easily cause damage to your window insulation. Make sure you check for cracks and make repairs if necessary. Now is the perfect time to clean your windows too. Polish them inside and out so you can make the most of when the sun starts shining.

Torrential rain can cause layers of paint to slowly fade away, so now is the time to make everything look brand new by giving your outdoor surfaces a lick of paint. Think about staining wood surfaces too. Fences, gazebos, tables, chairs – they will all benefit from a new coating ready for the summer.

Tidy up exterior

Flowers

Create a fantastic first impression at the impending summer parties by sprucing up the front of your home. Remove any weeds that may have grown across your path, give your front door a good clean, change outdoor light bulbs, tighten wobbly gates or railings and add some plant pots, hanging baskets or a new welcome mat to the entrance of your home.

Spring is all about adding a splash of colour back into our lives – and what better way to spruce up our home and garden? It may still be a little chilly, but now is the time to get planting so that your garden will be a stunning array of springtime colour. Indoor plants and vases of fresh flowers will bring the natural beauty indoors.

De-clutter After months of children and pets playing indoors, your house is probably in serious need of clearing out. It’s impossible to thoroughly clean surfaces and cupboards with a winter’s worth of clutter on top of them, so it’s time to be brutal – either find a suitable place for it, or throw it away. Make some extra money by selling unwanted items online, host a car boot sale or donate to your local charity shop.

Clean ceiling fans If you have a ceiling fan, it probably won’t have been used over the winter months. If you don’t remember to clear away the thick layer of dust that will have settled on the blades you will get an unpleasant surprise when you turn them on. Give them a good scrub to avoid circulating dust throughout your home.

Go green It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and start making your home as eco-friendly as possible. Energy-saving features make houses cheaper to run and are a good investment financially, socially and environmentally. Look out for solar powered products, energy-saving light bulbs, home energy monitors that track your usage, eco-kettles, energysaving toasters and standby gadgets to save energy and cash.

Garden

Clean upholstery and update furnishings

With the coming of spring, thoughts turn to our gardens. But if the prospect of landscaping fills you with fear, keep it simple. See your garden in a whole new light by rearranging your plants or purchasing some new garden furniture or accessories. Pressure-wash your decking or patio and bring outdoor furniture out of storage for a good clean. Although we’re still a few months away, there’s no harm in giving the barbecue a good scrub before the summer party season begins.

Fire up the vacuum and get rid of all the dust that will have accumulated on your sofas and chairs. If you gave your home a seasonal makeover at the beginning of winter, now is the time to pack away the throws and thick curtains and replace them with light furnishings and colourful accessories. Wash your pillows, duvets and curtains and get someone to help you flip your mattress.

SS Points of Interest

Spectacular house that Bess built Hardwick Hall is the magnificent legacy of a trail-blazing woman who defied Elizabethan conventions to claim a place at the top of society.

I

n 16th century Elizabethan England it was rare for a woman to hold a prominent place in society, let alone be in control of her own finances, estate and destiny. But it was a feat accomplished by Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, more commonly known as Bess of Hardwick. Through a series of well-made marriages, she rose from humble beginnings to the highest levels of English nobility and became one of the richest women in the kingdom. She married four times and her fourth husband George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, acted as keeper to the captive Mary, Queen of Scots, throughout their marriage. Bess’s association with the passionate and rebellious cousin of Queen Elizabeth I served to increase her position and notoriety, as well as contributing to the breakdown of her marriage. To display her wealth and power, Bess commissioned impressive building projects. The most famous are Chatsworth House – now the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire who are descended from the children of her second marriage – and Chesterfield’s own Hardwick Hall.

City break in the country

Chris Wilson gets off the beaten track and discovers that Washingborough Hall makes an ideal base for exploring historic Lincoln.

W

ith its magnificent cathedral, cobbled streets, riverside walks and superior independent shopping opportunities, Lincoln ticks all the boxes as a city break destination. And while not exactly a hidden gem, the fact that it does not attract the huge tourist numbers associated with certain other northern cities that have similar attributes makes it all the more appealing – and easier to get to grips with. No need for park and ride schemes here... driving cross-country on Lincolnshire’s sparsely populated roads until you catch the first glimpse of the cathedral spire is one of the most rewarding ways to begin a weekend break. And when it comes to finding a bed for the night, we found a gorgeous little hideaway just three miles away from, and several classes above, those oh-so-samey city centre chain hotels. Washingborough Hall is a pretty, Georgian Grade II-listed boutique hotel in a peaceful village setting. With three acres of mature gardens and grounds, complete with dovecote, it has elegant good looks that can’t help but make a winning first impression. But while the setting may be grand, the greeting is down-to-earth. Lucy and Edward

Understandably, given the pretty setting next door to the local parish church, Washingborough Hall is very much in demand for a civil ceremony or a wedding reception. During out short stay their private dining rooms also catered seamlessly for the local cricket club’s end-of-season dinner and a funeral tea – truly a venue for all seasons and all occasions. Food is first rate, as you’d expect considering the proximity of some prime farm land to ‘The Washy’. Lucy’s classical Cordon Bleu training and the skills of

dynamic young chef Dan Wallis are reflected in a menu that leans towards modern British, with the vast majority of the meat, game and vegetables locally sourced. Dining in the two-AA rosette restaurant is a relaxed, classy affair and we enjoyed fabulous fillet steak and duck in the evening, while the full English breakfast, cooked to order, is the perfect way to set you up for the day. The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout with period paints and original artwork depicting the local landscape. Our bedroom, complete with four-poster bed, was the last word in comfort and our bathroom included a free-standing bath. The city is only a few minutes’ drive away and Lincoln Cathedral, which has attracted pilgrims and visitors for over 900 years, is rather grand and awe-inspiring. Take the tour – the history is a tale worth hearing. Other city centre essentials include Lincoln’s famous Steep Hill (voted ‘Britain’s Best Street 2012’), the historic Bailgate area, and the waterfront. However if you want to extend the rural idyll, Washingborough village is the perfect starting point for riverside walks and cycle rides – and with such a gentle, flat landscape it’s gentle exercise all the way. here’s no point stepping out onto the street in a sharp suit, only to finish it off with a cheap pair of shoes bulging at the sides and splitting at the seams. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike, other accessories like cufflinks or a tie, a great pair completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and as such should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. And it’s shoes – handsome, comfortable and durable men’s shoes – that are the ‘sole’ of Charles Brooks’ business, if you’ll excuse the pun. An expert cobbler with over 50 years’ experience, Charles opened his first shop in 1972 after visiting his father at Darnall’s Coombes shoe repair factory as a youngster. A well-heeled gentleman himself, he understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of his Fulwood Road store. Loake, Barker and Tricker’s are among this select group of specialist designers, all of which are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved

in the making of just one pair of Loake Goodyear Welted shoes, most of which are carried out by highly-skilled craftsmen. Likewise, Barker, which produces over 200,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually, and Tricker’s shoes are carefully crafted by a team of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are handstitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the inner sole, which allows feet to breathe. A few decades ago, most of the shoes that men in this country bought were made in Northampton. But now only a few

specialist shoemakers remain; the rest have gone abroad where production is cheaper. “Mass produced shoes are not made to last,” says Charles. “They are glued together, and the plastic soles are finished with only a thin layer of leather, consequently they start to fall apart within a few months of wear. “Invest in a properly made pair of shoes and look after them, they can last anything up to ten years. They get better the more you wear them; some of my customers have been wearing the same pair for decades.” It is Charles’ meticulous eye for detail and passion for craftsmanship that has allowed him to cultivate a loyal clientele of customers. “We all call these 30-year shoes,” he says pointing to a beautiful, shiny pair of tan Tricker’s. “My customers are still bringing their first pair back three decades later to be repaired.” Charles and his expert team of cobblers offer shoe and leather repairs, shoe care products, key cutting, and have a range of wallets and briefcases for sale. They can also fix broken zips, and fit new watch batteries and watch straps. They may all be respectable pillars of the community, but this was a chance for one more night on the tiles, an opportunity to reminisce about Sheffield’s cork-popping super scene for one night only. Porsche’s new Cayman GT4 finally looks set to give the 911 a run for its money, writes Jordan Cutforth.

Hyundai takes the lead in the supermini stakes The coupé version of Hyundai’s i20 is on sale now. With 336-litres of boot space, it is more spacious than its five-door counterpart (326-litres), meaning that, even though it has gained a much sportier appearance, it is now the class leader in the supermini segment. Starting at £12,725, the entry level model will give you the SE trim which offers the likes of 16” alloys, Bluetooth connection and parking sensors. The upgraded Sport trim adds 17.7-inch alloys, climate control and automatic lights. The topline Sport Nav trim adds a 7-inch touch screen with satellite navigation, DAB radio and a rear view camera. An 83bhp 1.2-litre petrol and a 89bhp 1.4-litre diesel will be offered. The petrol has a fivespeed manual gearbox. The diesel, a six-speed manual.

Renault reboots the Megane If the RenaultSport Megane 275 is too hardcore for you, then say hello to the GT 220. It’s an ordinary Megane with larger front wheels and tyres, larger 320mm front brakes, stiffer springs and dampers, a chassis fettled by RenaultSport and a de-tuned 220bhp version of the same engine fitted to the RS Megane. 0-62mph takes 7.6 seconds. Top speed is 149mph and it achieves 38.7mpg on the combined cycle with emissions of 169g/km of CO2. Power is driven through the front wheels via a sixspeed manual gearbox. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth, sat-nav, a rear parking camera, automatic headlights and wipers, USB connection and a 3D sound system. Prices for the hatch are £23,245, coupé £24,230 and Sport Tourer £24,245.

Porsche’s Cayman GT4 set to cause a stir Porsche stated that a faster version of their mid-engined Cayman would never happen because it would turn out to be better than a 911. Well, here’s the Cayman GT4, and on paper, it sure as hell might be. Underneath there’s a 385bhp version of the engine found in the Carrera S which Porsche claims provides a 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds, a top speed of 183mph and 27.4mpg.

SOUTHSIDE 48

There’s a 30mm drop in ride-height over a standard Cayman, the chassis’s been fine-tuned with many components taken from the 911 GT3, and there’s the addition of a new front bumper and a fixed rear wing to improve downforce on both axles. Only a six-speed manual will be offered. Prices start from £64,451. Available to order now.

New Superb makes its debut Welcome to the stage the brand new Skoda Superb. It’ will be built on the MQB platform, meaning it will be lighter than its predecessor while improving on overall space. SS Chesterfield Champions

Young talent and trainers were deservedly given the spotlight during National Apprenticeship Week, says Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield.

I

am a huge advocate of apprenticeships. They are vital to the economy, particularly Chesterfield’s where SMEs play an important role and young people are the future life blood of many of the businesses within in. National Apprenticeship Week (9-13 March) was a great way to recognise both the thousands of young people that undertake apprenticeships every year in Chesterfield and also their employers who invest time and money in equipping these young people with skills for life. We are fortunate that we have a number of excellent apprentice providers and trainers right here in Chesterfield – Chesterfield College, NLT Training Services and the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce are just three that spring to mind. The College alone offers 35 different apprenticeships. It was great to see so many events organised in the town to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week. Events organised by Chesterfield College, NLT Training Services

and Chesterfield Football Club showed the diversity and value of apprenticeships as well as showcasing some of the inspirational young people currently undertaking them. While there is no shortage of training providers there is, unfortunately, a shortage of apprentices particularly in the manufacturing, construction and engineering sectors. All too often jobs in these sectors are seen by young people as being dirty and are often not considered. In the modern age of manufacturing and engineering this offer couldn’t be further from the reality. A walk around MSE Hiller’s premises at Markham Vale will demonstrate just how clean the engineering sector can be. I hope National Apprenticeship Week has helped raised awareness amongst our young people that apprenticeships are a route into a profession and provide a solid platform to develop a very successful career – all while

you earn as you learn. It will come as no surprise that many of the town’s prominent business leaders began their career as apprentices. Since 2010, two million apprenticeships have been started nationally with 90 per cent of apprentices remaining in employment after successfully completing their apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are key to us reducing youth unemployment in Chesterfield and maintaining our employment figures which are currently the best the town has ever seen. I say let’s keep the momentum of National Apprenticeship Week going and our youth unemployment figures down!
