SS Education

Give your child the best possible start in life at St Peter and St Paul School.

An investment for life

A

s one of the region’s most successful independent primary schools, St Peter and St Paul School in Chesterfield has much to be proud of. September sees the official start of new headmaster Jonathon Clark, who is excited at the prospect of leading this successful school into an even brighter future and building on the proven foundations that education provided at the school is an investment for life. While here, children grow into confident, courteous and caring individuals. As a result, many gain scholarships at leading independent secondary schools including Denstone in Staffordshire, Sheffield High School and Birkdale. The feedback St Peter and St Paul receives from all secondary schools frequently references the ease with which the school’s pupils settle into their secondary education and how fantastically well prepared they are for the challenges they meet. The comprehensive curriculum at St Peter and St Paul includes English, Maths, ICT, French, Spanish, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Art, Physical Education, PSHE and Design Technology; the latter taking place in a specially fitted work room. Science is taught in a fully equipped laboratory, while the very high standards in Music and Drama are reflected in the quality of productions as well

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

as the exceptional school choir’s many successes. All subjects are taught by specialist subject teachers in small classes, ensuring the very best learning experience and development for each child. Junior pupils also participate in a weekly life skills programme, which includes archery, canoeing, orienteering, bushcraft, cookery, first aid and swimming. Climbing also takes place on the school’s very own climbing wall, which has recently been upgraded to National Indoor Climbing Level 2 standard. Every child who experiences these activities is excited and enthused by the challenges and the Year 5 and 6 residential visit, which puts all these skills to the test, is a real highlight. The youngest pupils are also given a taste of the great outdoors through the Scandinavianinspired Forest School sessions, held in the school’s own woodland. Here, reception classes enjoy a 5:1 pupil to staff ratio – a brilliant way to allow children to develop their literacy and numeracy skills whilst quickly learning to become independent. The unique environment at St Peter and St Paul caters for children of all abilities and provides encouragement, support and challenges to ensure that each and every child reaches his or her full potential.

The results speak for themselves, with St Peter and St Paul the highest-ranked independent school for Key Stage 2 results in Derbyshire, giving it a top 100 ranking in The Sunday Times Parent Power Survey of Independent Schools. A new initiative in the next academic year is the Biz Kids entrepreneur initiative, which will be introduced in conjunction with raising money for the school’s chosen charity for the next year; Macmillan Cancer Support. Biz Kids is a Key Stage 2 opportunity in which Year 3 to Year 6 children can engage as young entrepreneurs and imaginative fundraisers. Jonathon believes that children grow and achieve through enterprise whilst being given the opportunity to develop expertise, understanding and attitudes that will stay with them for life. Their enterprise learning journey in September will ensure a progressive development of skills, qualities and knowledge including team work, risk, negotiating and influencing, effective communication, creativity and innovation, initiative, problem solving, organising and planning, making ethical decisions, leadership, financial literacy and product and service design. A wonderful enrichment for any child’s learning. The future for St Peter and St Paul School is bright. Come to the open day on Saturday 10 October to see for yourself just what a difference it could make for your child. SS Flooring

From carpets and vinyl to wood and laminate, there is something to suit everyone at Layers.

Floors for all

W

Iith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice

SOUTHSIDE 6

was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples

so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very

thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

Get your life back Hypnotherapist Charlotte Spivey dispels the myths and explains how hypnotherapy can help you.

W

hen people come to see me it’s usually as a last resort. Most of the time they have tried the available services without achieving the outcome they had hoped for. Many people have negative preconceptions of hypnotherapy because of what they have seen on the television, but I can assure you it is nothing like that at all. You do not lose control or do anything you don’t know about, in fact, it’s the total opposite. It is all about putting you back in control of how you’re feeling; giving you your life back. Those who suffer from panic attacks, anxiety or depression experience a loss of control. These issues can take over how you feel and how you live your life, which is scary and usually extremely lonely. There are so many people who don’t tell anyone how they are feeling and they spend years watching their life disappear around them. I use hypnotherapy techniques to promote healing and positive development. I’ve treated hundreds of clients and, while it’s usually a brief therapy with a small amount of appointments needed, some need longer – but I never give up. My specialist areas include treating panic attacks, anxiety and depression. I also help women with life after miscarriage and pregnancy after a loss.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

What does it feel like to be hypnotised? It feels really relaxing; some people describe it as that peaceful place you go to when you’re really comfortable in bed and just about to drift off to sleep. Will I know what you’re saying to me when I’m hypnotised? In the first few sessions you will probably follow what I’m saying right to the end. The more you get to know me, the more relaxed and used to the hypnosis you become, the deeper you will allow yourself to drift into hypnosis. Hypnotherapy isn’t like taking a tablet so how will I know it’s working? You should start to feel lighter and will notice a lift in mood. In our hypnotherapy sessions you will learn ways of coping and techniques to use. I will give you new ways to manage unwanted feelings and how to lessen them as quickly as possible to make progress, which will help you to feel positive and supported. How many sessions will I need? It’s hard to say until we’ve done the initial assessment, it can be anything from three sessions to ten, but then sometimes things crop up later on into treatment that we decide to deal with if the client wants to, which takes longer. It’s all about being balanced and happy.

Can you tell me more about helping women with life after miscarriage and pregnancy after loss? Through my own personal experience I was amazed at what a taboo having a miscarriage was. No one dares talk to you about the baby you have lost. I offer the opportunity for mothers who have lost a child to be able to talk with someone who knows what it feels like and provide hypnotherapeutic ways of coping with life after loss. How will I feel after? Relaxed and comfortable Do you treat anything else? Yes, I treat lots of issues from weight loss to hypnotherapy birthing.Visit my website www.white-willow.co.uk to see all treatments available. What advice would you give to someone who has tried other treatments but has had little success? My main message is don’t suffer alone. Please don’t feel there is no other help available and don’t go through life thinking it won’t ever get better. Pick up the phone and call me. I know how scary that initial call is, but I’m here to help and support. Tel: 01143 420 290 or 07812 335761 Email: info@white-willow.co.uk www.white-willow.co.uk

Tapton Park Golf Course – a healthy challenge. index one, it’s the hardest on the course and will take two shots of high quality to give you a chance of marking par. The par-five 15th offers the greatest view of the course as it reaches its peak. The well-protected green on this hole provides a challenge to all. The 16th is fairly straightforward and offers a good birdie opportunity, but it’s the 17th which is the signature hole of the course. You’ll need to play to 200 yard-odd tee shot here and even then the approach shot offers a stern test – with the guarding bunker on the right of the green, you’d be well-advised to aim to the left, as the bunker can often catch a misshit approach shot. The 18th can be played in two ways – those wanting to protect their score

can play a short iron shot and lay up towards the green, whereas a more daring player can attempt to drive over the trees from the tee shot for an exciting finish. The greens are ironed regularly to add speed to the undulating putting surfaces, and with facilities such as the bar, changing rooms, gym and meeting rooms to match the course in its beauty, there’s little doubt about how much this course has to offer. Tapton offers a variety of membership products to suit players of all standards from beginner memberships, which include coaching, to the well-established and extremely good value ‘Golfit’ membership, allowing unlimited use of five golf courses and seven gyms across Sheffield and Chesterfield. Located just a ten-minute walk from Chesterfield’s train station, the views from the driveway are spectacular – but it won’t be long before you’re drawn in by the long, open fairways of the first and second holes. Both are reasonably gentle par fours, ensuring your game can get off to a good start. SS Eating Out

Words and photography: Phoebe Seymour

A taste of the country Rustic surroundings and delicious food make Hackney House the ideal place to linger over a pot of tea and a tempting slice of cake.

O

n a dull, humid summer day like this, I’m glad to be driving away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and toward a café in the countryside. Hackney House is a cute and quaint cottage split into a gift shop filled with gorgeous jewellery and hand made cards on one side and a tearoom-style café, which serves big lunches and light bites, as well as a variety of home-baked cakes, on the other. I am shown to a table with a chequered lavender tablecloth by a waitress in a matching lavender apron. As it is lunchtime, the small room and the adjoining conservatory extension are full of customers, but this does nothing to offset the calming atmosphere created by the country-kitchen décor – exposed old brickwork and mintpainted low beams. Owner Katherine has been running Hackney House for the past nine years and has been in the catering industry since she was a teenager. Although it’s cloudy today, I notice there is a seating area outside which I imagine would be gorgeous on a sunny day. The waitress tells me the cafe is particularly popular in the summer and the conservatory also opens into an outdoor area. Despite the menu being full of British classics such as meat and potato pie, it’s nice to see a variety of hearty vegetarian dishes. I order the zesty organic lemonade and the vintage cheddar and tomato quiche with new potatoes, which is on the specials board. The quiche has a fluffy, omelette-like texture, whilst the tomato adds some zing and the cheese gives it a nice punch. I

worried this would be too heavy for lunch, but its light, crisp base means it is just enough. Accompanied by a fresh and generous portion of salad drizzled in dressing

and a few new potatoes covered in a small square of butter, this dish is both healthy and delicious. I peruse the variety of homemade traditional and contemporary cakes on display (which you can also take out for £1.75). There are also traditional scones and the intriguing seed and berry scones. I go for the classic Victoria sponge cake and pot of tea – the perfect afternoon tea combination. The sponge is not very sweet, which makes the jam and thick, sugary layer of butter cream all the more mouthwateringly welcome. Topped with a dusting of sugar, this is a beautifully big wedge. So much so that I end up taking the rest home. As I leave, I see a tempting table of wrapped pies and quiches to enjoy at home too. Hackney House Café is a lovely place to spend a relaxing afternoon with a pot of tea and a slice of cake. Just make sure you book ahead to avoid disappointment.

ASK THE EXPERT David Stone of Dave Stone Design Limited Type of business: Kitchen design and installation

well as installation, there is little that I have not encountered. Problems are always thrown up, including arrangements that have never suited the current kitchen or its owners. I am able to recognise these problems, make suggestions and find solutions – always mindful that all anyone wants is a brand-new, beautiful, beating heart of the home.

What is your role in your company? Managing director and designer. How did you end up in this type of business? Over 30 years ago, I was asked to set up a kitchen showroom for someone and I did. Seven years later, I decided to set up my own retail showroom and 23 years later, the rest is history, as they say. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work? The kitchen is the soul of the house. It needs to have form as well as function and work for the client. It’s no use simply replacing what they already have if it doesn’t work for their current lifestyle. No kitchen is the same; all have their idiosyncrasies and the design needs to overcome these and start to work as a well-designed kitchen should.

Are there any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about? I have the most amazing team around me and encourage them to push the boundaries as I have done. My on-site manager, Dan, and his wife, Jess, are expecting twin boys soon so that’s the next installation team sorted! What specific expertise can you offer our readers? ASK THE EXPERT Julian Askham of The Tile Place. Type of business: Tile retailer and tiling service. What is your role in your company? Managing director How did you end up in this type of business? I followed in my father’s footsteps; from leaving school I went straight into the tiling industry. I have worked at various other tile businesses before starting my own company seven years ago. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work? Once tiles are installed they are there for a long time, so it's vital you use a professional to do the job right and use the correct materials to ensure you can be sure that the job will stand the test of time and look great.

Paul chose engineered oak wood flooring, perfect for under-floor heating

Wood you believe it There are no bounds to the service offered by Dronfield Carpets & Floors. Just ask barge owner Paul Thompson...

A

n unconventional home needn’t mean sacrificing on traditional home improvements, and no one knows this better than boat resident Paul Thompson. Paul started building the barge moored at Tully’s Marine, Rotherham in June 2013. His vision for the project required a bespoke approach and a number of open-minded suppliers. So when Paul visited Dronfield Carpets & Floors, he was pleased to find a team as excited about the project as he was. “Some companies were dead against the project and couldn’t help, whilst others were happy to get on board,” says Paul. “When I told the owner Tom the flooring was for a boat, it didn’t faze him at all. He just said, ‘Let’s go for it!’” And what Tom and his team don’t know about boats, they more than make up for in flooring expertise. They made suggestions,

were able to answer all of Paul’s questions and although the team were happy to install the floorboards, Paul decided to fit them himself. “They were unbelievably easy to fit,” says Paul. “If floorboards are of a high quality, they tend to slot together much better than cheap ones.” Barge builders tend to favour carpet, assuming boats are cold places to live, but Paul got around this by choosing engineered oak wood flooring, perfect for under-floor heating. “Solid wood can expand and shrink depending on humidity, so I’ve gone for a ply wood that won’t do that as much,” he says. “I know that if I spill something, the boards won’t lift and it’s hard-wearing. I’ve already dropped things and they haven’t left a dint.” This wood has a natural, textured look, so even if scratches occur, they do nothing to impact badly on the style. Paul believes the

flooring will last long into the future, when he finally hands the boat down to one of his three children, who are all now young adults. “The wood is a good thickness. Even if my kids want to change the flooring, it can be sanded down or easily lifted and replaced.” Paul has found the flooring to be the most important feature of the boat, when it came to adding the rest of the interior. “Once you’ve got the floor right, everything else fits into place. I was impressed by how accurately Tom measured it up. A spirit level doesn’t really work on a boat!” So, what has impressed Paul the most about the service at Dronfield Carpets & Floors? “Unlike big-name, general DIY stores, Tom and his team thoroughly know their trade and their prices are just as competitive. They were professional, friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.” To find out how Dronfield Carpets & Floors can update your home, pop into their modern, open plan showroom or scan this QR code to take a virtual tour. You can also take a close look at the shop on Google Maps to see everything they have to offer. SOUTHSIDE 32

t’s no secret that many of us think of the kitchen as the heart of the home. And that’s no surprise because, whether it’s simply putting your feet up with a cuppa and catching up with friends, or cooking a huge turkey for Christmas day, the kitchen is a room that almost every guest is guaranteed to see and should be a place you are proud of. If you are not satisfied with the condition of your kitchen, perhaps it is time for a revamp. Whether you know exactly what you want to achieve, or have absolutely no idea, the experienced and friendly staff at David J Martin can help you realise your kitchen’s potential. The company is currently celebrating an impressive 35 years in business and managing director David Martin believes that providing excellent customer service and quality, bespoke products is the formula for success. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd. We

are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings,” he said. This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. At David J Martin you will get a kitchen that is unique to you. The cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which you can see being made in the workshops. They can spray doors to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinyl-wrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paint-spraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinylwrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. As well as providing excellent products and kitchens, the company is highly regarded for its great customer and after-sales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, they will help to put them right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It is a truly caring approach and, with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it is clearly a good one. As well as their workshop, you can see examples of the company’s work in the showroom at David J Martin’s premises on Springvale Road, Sheffield. As well as kitchens, they create wardrobes, media centres and studies. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.”

‘Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd. We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch.’

Teeing off in Tenerife An inviting climate and stunning courses make the largest of the Canary islands an ideal year-round destination for golfers. Words: John Murphy

T

raditionally Tenerife has been the first choice as a winter sun destination, offering the prospect of heat, fine beaches and a break from bleak British weather. That perception is now changing with the realisation that the island, the largest of the Canaries, offers attractions as an all-year-round destination. The principal among these is the climate – temperatures average 22 degrees centigrade and 27 degrees is rarely exceeded. There is no variation in temperature between summer and winter months and it is increasingly seen as a better alternative to traditional summer destinations such as Spain and Portugal where temperatures can be oppressive in the summer months. The tourist industry is helping to encourage this influx of new visitors in the summer by offering attractive rates for hotels and for playing golf on the eight courses on the island. The mild but warm climate in the summer makes golf a pleasure in Tenerife and golf parties or couples would be well advised to consider the island as the ideal destination. Tenerife is just over four hours’ flight time away (Monarch fly from a number of UK airports) and one of the courses closest to the airport is Golf Las Americas. The verdant 18-hole course is formed from a natural amphitheatre of land with stunning views over the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera, home to the Canaries’ ninth golf course El Tecina. The par 72 was designed by John Jacobs and is a perfect example of a really good resort course. The fairways are enticingly

SOUTHSIDE 38

wide as they snake around lines of pine and palm trees and the greens, with some

Golf Las Americas

undulations, are fair and true. The Bermuda grass on the fairways means that clean ball striking is the order of the day. It is not unduly long and some of the shorter par fours and fives offer the average club golfer the chance of that rare commodity: a birdie. A review would be incomplete without mention of the wonderful clubhouse with balconies overlooking the course and its exotic flowers and fauna. The quality of food and service is excellent as would be anticipated with it being part of the five-star Hotel Las Madrigueras resort. Many of the luxurious and spacious bedrooms, the terraces, the restaurant and the swimming pool overlook the course and it is ideally situated being close to both Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. As is the case with many golfing destinations, especially on the continent, courses such as Golf Las Americas are attached to a hotel which offers discounted rates to play and stay. The rates improve in

the summer months so that one night’s bed and breakfast here for two plus one round of golf is offered from 202 euros until 30 September 2015. The Abama course is another attached to a hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, where special rates are offered. The course contrasts markedly with Golf Las Americas; it is more of a stadium course with fair distances between tee and green which makes walking a challenge for anyone but the fittest. Any track where you have to avoid 22 lakes and 25,000 palm trees is tough and Abama certainly is a great test of golfing skills, or lack of them. Dave Thomas has used all his imagination to create some awe-inspiring holes hewn out of rocks and canyons which are a major feature of the landscape. The hotel offers a fine retreat from the rigours of the golf course with outstanding food, service and facilities. A golfing holiday to Tenerife would be incomplete without a visit to Golf Costa Adeje, arguably the flagship and most famous course on the island having staged the Spanish Ladies’ Open last September. The Pepe Gancedo layout is highly unusual – raised terraces made from boulders run across a number of fairways, old farm walls

Factbox Monarch, the scheduled leisure airline, operates flights to Tenerife from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester airports with fares, including taxes, starting from £69.99 one way. line holes and some bunkers incorporate the volcanic signature sand of Tenerife. There is a sense that the course is longestablished and very traditional. This, plus the fantastic views, makes the course a pleasure to play. A number of holes have greens perched on the headland, framed by the azure colours of the ocean below. Other courses on the island include the Manuel Pinero modified Golf del Sur, the Donald Steel designed Amarilla Golf, the Ballesteros Buenavista, the very traditional Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, and Golf la Rosaleda. Further details of golf packages and special summer rates can be found at www.webtenerife.com/golf. Golf is not the only attraction on Tenerife. It’s home to 70 beaches, the majority of which have been awarded blue flag status. It’s an island of two halves; the lush north of the island complements the sunny and dry south, shielded from the wind and humidity by a mountainous landscape which divides the island into two different worlds. At the heart of the mountainous range is the Tiede National Park which features the spectacular Mount Tiede.Vast volcanic craters greet the visitor and imprints of lava flows

remain etched on the craggy landscape. A cable car will take you up to the very top of the volcano – although some hearty souls do attempt to walk. Whale and dolpin watching is also popular. The waters around the island are home to about 400 short-finned pilot whales and numerous bottlenose dolphins and tours are available all year round. Tenerife also has a well-deserved reputation as a culinary destination with its excellent food being complemented by some award-winning local wines which owe their success both to great

imagination and the subtropical climate. In addition to Hotel Las Madrigueras, visitors might want to consider the plush five-star Iberostar Anthelia Hotel or the comfortable and friendly Hotel Suite Villa Maria – also five-star. The former offers discounted packages to stay and play at Golf Las Americas and Costa Adeje while the latter offers three nights bed and breakfast from 197 euros per person until the end of September including two green fees, unlimited golf at Costa Adeje, buggies, lunchtime buffet at the course and taxes.

SS Motoring

Turning over a new leaf Alfa Romeo has unveiled a serious contender to the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – and boy does it look good. The Giulia, the long-awaited successor to the 159, is dripping with Italian style and elegance but has lots more to make you sit up and take note. For a start, it’s rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will also be available) with perfect 50/50 weight distribution; a strong indication that it will drive as good as it looks. This is aided by the use of carbon fibre, aluminium and plastic, giving the car an extraordinary weight-to-power ratio. The Giulia will launch in 2016 with the flagship Quadrifoglio version, a 510hp behemoth which utilises a state-of-the-art six cylinder turbo petrol engine with Ferrari-inspired technologies. The queue starts here.

Some old favourites get a new lease of life while Alfa Romeo unveil their latest superstar, writes Richard Abbey. Dynamic improvements

A new class of MINI Although larger than its predecessor, the biggest changes to the new MINI Clubman have been made under the bonnet with the introduction of new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines. Three units will be available from launch, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper D Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, with prices starting from £19,995. A choice of two petrol engines with three or four cylinders will be offered alongside a four-cylinder diesel. Six-speed manual transmissions will be offered as standard although a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option on the MINI Cooper D and MINI Cooper S Clubman. All cars will come with MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard, exemplifying the high levels of equipment across the range.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Mercedes-Benz’s change of direction for it’s AClass proved to be a gamble worth taking – and now they’ve unveiled a new version of the sporty hatchback. Lookswise you’ll be hard pushed to notice any difference; it’s inside where the changes have been made. The biggest improvement is perhaps the introduction of DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to change the car’s characteristics at the touch of a button. The engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning are all tuned to fit with one of the selected driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. There’ll be four petrol engines and four diesel engines, the latter of which includes a new 109hp A180 d with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. If performance is more your thing, there’ll also be a 381hp Mercedes-AMG A45 4MATIC – the world’s most powerful compact sports model.

Brand icon The Mazda MX-5 has long been considered one of the best – if not the best – value-formoney roadsters on the market. And now it just got even better. The all-new model, characterised by rearwheel drive, perfect 50/50 weight distribution and more comfort and technology than ever before, was launched at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s shorter, lower and wider than its predecessor as well as lighter. Two SKY ACTIV-G petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 131ps and 2.0-litre 160ps – will be available along with five trim levels. All models feature LED headlights, alloy wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox. Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director, said: “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products. Our vibrant mix of independent shops, bars and restaurants is bucking the national trend, says Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, other towns and cities are struggling with a growing number of vacant shops, our retail offer is a vibrant mix of independent and chain retailers which is continually expanding; a rarity in today's retail climate. Simply drive along Chatsworth Road or Whittington Moor to see new restaurants, bars and independent shops opening for evidence of this.
