BAKEWELL SHOW

Fun for the family FROM ROYAL SIGNALS TO ROBOTIC STREET THEATRE AND PUNCH AND JUDY TO PETTING ZOOS, THERE’S MUCH MORE TO BAKEWELL SHOW THAN AGRICULTURE.

inal preparations are being made for the 186th Bakewell Show, which takes place from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 August. The annual event at Bakewell Showground attracts visitors from around the world, with guests this year set to visit from as far away as Hong Kong. Proceedings get underway on Tuesday 2 August with a dedicated Equestrian Day, ahead of the main show. The equestrian element of Bakewell Show

F

continues to thrive and will this year include qualifiers for the Horse of the Year Show and for the first time the Royal International Horse Show. There are also a number of unaffiliated classes, enabling local riders to try their hand at competing. Entrance to the Equestrian Day is £5, which includes free parking and grandstand seating. Some trade stands will also be open and refreshments will be available. The main show days are Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 August, with agricultural exhibits and classes,

“In such a vast space there are activities tucked in every nook and cranny, which makes whiling away a day easy, even if the skies are grey.” 16 Southside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

BAKEWELL SHOW

“We’ll have the Royal Signals White Helmet motorcycle stunt team roaring into centre ring as our headline act and Titan, the larger-thanlife robot, will return to roam the ground with his unique brand of street theatre.” as well as a plethora of family entertainment. Janet Bailey, Bakewell Show manager, said: “We’ll have the Royal Signals White Helmet motorcycle stunt team roaring into centre ring as our headline act and Titan, the larger-than-life robot, will return to roam the ground with his unique brand of street theatre. “In such a vast space there are activities tucked in every nook and cranny, which makes whiling away a day easy, even if the skies are grey; much of Bakewell Show is undercover across our enormous marquees and the Agricultural Centre building.” Visitors can meet an array of animals, from alpacas and Valais blacknose sheep (fondly labelled the cutest in the world), to cattle, goats and more in the Agricultural Centre. Pigeons, poultry, rabbits and, of course, horses can also be viewed across the Showground. Chesterfield’s Brook Garden Centre will return with a petting zoo, where furry fourlegged friends mingle with critters of an altogether more scaly and slithery nature! Head down towards the Dog Show field to see hundreds of canine breeds and even take part in a companion dog show, held on both Show days in aid of Ashbourne Animal Welfare. Visitors can sign up to participate on the day. Nearby is the beautiful Anglers Rest, a peaceful corner of the Showground on the beautiful River Wye. Participate in fly-fishing lessons with experts, as well as enjoy cooking demonstrations on how to prepare and cook fish for each meal of the day.

There are a variety of children’s classes at Bakewell Show, which can be entered prior to the event. Details are available on the Bakewell Show website and participating children are entitled to a free parent ticket to the Show. Children go free to Bakewell Show when you book in advance – the gate price on the day is £5. Younger visitors can burn off some energy attending circus workshops, whizzing down zip wires and scaling climbing walls before heading to the Village Green; here they can experience rural crafts including dry stone walling, weaving and wood carving, plus live music and theatre. Crafty kids can visit the Flower Show marquee to attend flower arranging workshops with BBC Big Allotment Challenge’s Jonathan Moseley, then head to the Food and Farming marquee for biscuit baking and other activities. The popular Children’s Zone will once again feature a beach with Punch and Judy shows, donkey rides and deckchairs.

For motoring enthusiasts there are expertly curated displays of vintage cars, motorbikes and tractors, with the latter promising WWII exhibits never seen at Bakewell Show before. Those with green fingers can visit the Flower Show marquee, incorporating stunning horticultural and floral displays of flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables. Visitors are invited to judge a wedding-themed floristry competition run by Jonathan Moseley, helping to decide which local florist’s creation will win the coveted first prize. Hundreds of artisan market stalls from across the country will be available to peruse, selling wares from clothing and outdoor gear to preserves, cakes, crafts, jewellery and much more. After its inaugural success in 2015, ‘Apres Show’ will return on the Wednesday from 6pm, enabling show-goers to stay on for extra White Helmet and Titan performances. Live music will be courtesy of Chesterfield

crooner Chris Measham, with bars remaining open into the evening and food available. Buy advance adult tickets and children aged 5-15 go free (£5 on the day), for details visit bakewellshow.org or call 01629 812736. Bakewell Show is run by Bakewell Agricultural & Horticultural Society Ltd., a not-for-profit charitable organisation that seeks to preserve this historic event. Southside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 17

Type of business: Independent wine shop. What is your role in the company?

Owner. How did you end up in this type of business?

I discovered a passion for making wine in Lancashire, where I grew up. Dronfield Wine World was triggered when visiting a friend’s wine shop, which gave me the inspiration to rekindle my love affair with wine.

Thomas Straw Dronfield Carpets and Floors, 120 Sheffield Road, Dronfield, S18 2GE

Type of business: Flooring Retailer. What is your role in your company?

Company owner.

Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

We stock top quality wines, which are not usually found in supermarkets, that come from quality conscious producers who are passionate about wine. We also offer excellent value for money in terms of price and quality. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

We stock wines from around the world, Chile being a specialty. We know our wines very well and pride ourselves on our ability to match wines to customers’ tastes and budgets. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

Alongside a wine of the week for tasting in store, we hold regular tasting events which allow customers to extend their range and introduce them to wines they might not otherwise have tried.

How did you end up in this type of business?

After leaving school I trained to be a carpet fitter, then I worked as fitter for ten years before I began to supply floor covering to both residential and commercial clients.

Type of business: Ladies clothes boutique. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

Advice, support and customer service are the most important services when supplying to the public. Our experience within the trade allow us to excel in all the above, and we pride ourselves on the service we give. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Our team offers expertise in every aspect of our trade from planning, design and technical support to wholesale, installations and after sales. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

We are currently in the process of developing a purpose-built unit to expand on our current stock levels, enabling us to sell our ranges directly to the trade and public. This will include a roll-end and remnant centre, open six days a week. 20 Southside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

What is your role in your company?

Director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I started as a sales and service advisor, then progressed to store manager. I had enough experience and I strongly believed that I could offer that something a little more exclusive in a personal shopping environment. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

When setting up a business it comes down to time and money, I had to dedicate my time seven days a week, be the face of Blanc and listen to customers. With the help from my husband, who's also a Director of the business, and a few sacrifices, we self-funded Blanc. Starting up any business is risky, but we are now in our sixth trading year, and still here. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Know the industry. Do your research. Recruit a team that genuinely cares, be realistic on price points, adapt to change, listen to your customers and learn by your mistakes. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

I am looking for second premises outside Chesterfield for Blanc in another town.

EATING OUT

A taste of tradition

HACKNEY HOUSE MAKES A QUAINT DESTINATION FOR A TASTY LUNCH… AND THE FOOD’S DELICIOUS – JUST DON’T TELL GRANDMA, WRITES MOLLY McGREEVY. hen the sun is shining, it’s almost the weekend, and the wind is in your hair as you drive through the luscious countryside in full summer bloom, it’s hard to think that your day can get any better, but when the drive ends at Hackney House, Barlow, the best is yet to come. We arrive at lunchtime and every table is either occupied or reserved, with walk-in customers taking seats in the hidden gem of a garden at the back of the café. We were seated in Hackney House’s conservatory, which was light, airy and quaint: the perfect spot. The Hackney House menu features all you would expect from a café, there’s sandwiches, spuds and scones but it was their homemade pies that caught my attention and I ordered the cheese, onion and potato pie (£7.50) from the specials board. Keeping to the pie theme, my friend chose the fisherman’s pie (£9.50). Sat at tables with checked cloths and pretty little vases full of flowers it felt like we had been transported back to a traditional tearooms from times gone by, fitting seeing as the building that Hackney House stands in today has been serving tea and cake since the 17th century.

Our lunch soon arrived, my cheese and onion pie came with a generous portion of salad and crusty bread, which was perfect for dipping into the wonderfully cheesy filling that spilled out from the flaky, homemade pastry. Just like Grandma makes (well better, but she doesn’t need to know that), my pie was flavoursome, comforting and delicious. The fisherman’s pie, a combination of prawns, salmon and white fish, came with homemade mash, broccoli and carrots. The flavours complimented each other beautifully, whilst the vegetables were cooked to perfection. For dessert we were spoilt for choice, Hackney House serves a selection of cold cakes as well as more traditional hot desserts. After considerable deliberation I chose the Bakewell tart (£4.50), whilst my friend chose the lemon meringue (£4.50). It’s not often my friend is rendered speechless but when her lemon meringue arrived at the table she sat in disbelief for a few seconds, jaw dropped, in awe of the dessert in front of her. At least three inches of light, fluffy meringue sat on top of a refreshing, zesty layer of lemon; the flavours

suited the sunny day perfectly. My Bakewell tart came warm with pouring cream, and was a fabulously sweet end to a great homemade lunch. For those who want to take a piece of Hackney House home, their pies and cakes are available to take away at very reasonable prices, and almost everyone was buying extras to take back for their supper in the evening. Or, if you want a souvenir of your trip out to the pretty countryside in which the café sits, the adjoining shop sells a fabulous range of handcrafted gifts. dave stone design The difference is in the detail.

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “We chose David Stone Design based on a friend’s recommendation and we are delighted with the end result; a unique kitchen that beautifully fits with our home. It was great to combine our ideas and to have control of the overall design and finishing details. The suppliers recommended for various elements of the project e.g. the windows, the tiling company, the granite were all very good and Chris and Dan, who lead the building work and the kitchen fitting project were both excellent. We feel the result is a kitchen that balances contemporary and traditional design elements, in quality materials and beautiful colours.” – Julie and Simon, Nether Edge 360 CHATSWORTH ROAD, CHESTERFIELD S40 2BY TELEPHONE 01246 200678 MOBILE 07973 411698 www.DaveStoneDesign.com dave@DaveStoneDesign.com Find us on facebook

in 2015, Tate Britain launched the first large exhibition of her work since 1968 – the year she was appointed a Dame of the British Empire (DBE). Her abstract forms, which are akin to caves and shells, were affected by Cornwall’s landscape, where Dame Barbara along with her husband Ben Nicholson, the renowned British painter, relocated from London with their children in 1939. It was Cornwall that inspired the creation of Rosewall. It is actually named after the hill that rises west of St Ives where her Trewyn Studio was based. Explaining her inspiration for the sculpture she said: “[Rosewall] was conceived at the top of this hill and is a fusion of ideas – a composition of forms which express, for me, both the inward and outward perceptions in a new image. The stone is myself, gazing outward as countless thousands of people must have done during centuries in this place. The stone itself gazes out in awareness.” Rosewall is is one of only four stone sculptures made by Dame Barbara before her death in an accidental fire in 1975. As well as stone, Dame Barbara’s work was also made out of metals and wood such as mahogany and oak. Some of her iconic pieces include the Winged Figure on the side of John Lewis, Oxford Street in London, and Figure for Landscape, which is one of her many sculptures that is now in the US, in Washington. In 2013, a Barbara Hepworth sculpture entitled Curved Form (Bryher II) made headlines when it set a new world record price for a work by the artist. The piece, which had been estimated to sell for between £1m- £1.5m, sold at auction for £2.4million. In the UK, Dame Barbara’s work can be viewed at her former home and studios in St Ives, now known as the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, which has been in the care of the Tate Gallery since 1980. Many of her works are also on display at the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield.

Hansons Auctioneers put decorative arts under the hammer Hansons Auctioneers held a successful summer decorative arts auction, which saw a selection of silver goods, jewellery, ceramics, glass, paintings and furniture sold off. The first lot of the day, an Asprey cocktail shaker in the form of a dumbbell, shook up the bidding to sell over estimate for £1,150. The highest selling item of the auction was a silver and enamel covered bowl, designed by C R Ashbee and made by the Guild of Handicraft around 1893. Several bidders battled it out for the bowl before the hammer came down at £8,400. Jewellery, ceramics and glass all sold well at the auction, with goods selling over initial estimates. Art deco figures led the way in the works of art section, and in the prints and The silver and enamel bowl painting section a mixed media by American artist Enrico which sold for £8,400 Donati sold above estimate at £6,100 and a small watercolour by Scottish artist Elizabeth Mary Watt sold at a record breaking £1,500. MOTORING

New Volvos hit the spot For those seeking a more sporting and expensive edge to their everyday family runabout, the R-Design models in Volvo’s line-up really hit the spot. And with the release of the all-new S90 saloon and V90 estate, Volvo has once again applied the Rdesign treatment. Sporting a new front-end design with spoilerintegrated fog lights, unique grill with piano black trim on both the front and rear of the car, new five-spoke matt black diamond-cut wheels and a more performance-orientated chassis, not only should the S90/V90 look the part but it should drive the part to. There are unique touches on the inside to which should improve the experience over standard models such as unique deco trim and sporty contour seats. Prices to be unveiled shortly.

FROM HIGH PERFORMANCE TO FAMILY PRACTICALITY, JORDAN CUTFORTH LOOKS AT THE CARS HITTING ROADS SOON.

King of the track? New Mondeo ST

Rugged good looks

Ever wanted a sporty Ford Mondeo? Well, if so, you’d have to rewind all the way back to 2002 with the ST220 which had a very exciting – and thirsty – V6 petrol bomb under the hood. Today, the ST name makes a comeback onto the brand’s family wagon range after a 14year absence. It’s called the STLine, but unlike the usual ST nut jobs that escape from the Ford skunkworks division, which come packing powerful petrol engines, this one comes with two 2.0-litre diesel options in 148 and 178hp flavours. Other additions to the STLine include sport suspension and body styling, unique alloy wheel designs and sport seats, perforated leather steering wheel and alloy pedals for the interior. Available in five-door or estate body styles.

Mercedes-Benz has finally announced pricing and specifications for their new GLC Coupe SUV. Starting at £40,580, the GLC Coupe from launch will be available with a 2.1-litre diesel with either 170 (GLC 220d) or 204hp (GLC 250d). Both produce 56.5mpg on the combined cycle and emit 131g/km of CO2. A nine-speed automatic comes as standard. Standard equipment includes Garmin Map Pilot navigation system, Active Park Assist, Artico upholstery in black or beige. keyless start, reversing camera, LED performance head lights, heated front seats, sports suspension, electrically operated tail gate and mirrors. There’s a host of optional equipment available for this car, including the AMG Line, the Premium and Premium Plus packages and the Driving Assist Package. First UK deliveries will arrive in September.

Revealed at this years’ Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mercedes AMG GT R is the latest German skunkworks escapee to take a headlong on challenge in dethroning the Porsche 911 GT3 RS from the perch of ultimate track car weaponry. This AMG GT R is what the SLS Black Series was to the original SLS: it’s a meaner, more hardcore machine than the vehicle it’s based on. To achieve this madman lunacy, Mercedes has added a wider and more aggressive body kit, power increase to 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque, a quicker 0-62 sprint of 3.6 seconds, a higher 198mph top speed and a much louder exhaust. Prices yet to be confirmed but expect a hefty premium of over the AMG GT S’s £110,000 sticker price.

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS

THE BENEFITS OF BEING PART OF THE SHEFFIELD CITY REGION, BY PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD.

he Sheffield City Region (SCR) devolution deal has certainly got everyone talking. Like the EU referendum, it’s become a heart and head matter. That word – Sheffield – has caused us to think with our hearts rather than our heads and overlook the fact that this is simply an economic deal and nothing to do with administrative or geographic boundaries. Chesterfield will remain part of Derbyshire. I couldn’t have agreed more when Cllr John Burrows, said at a recent business event about the consultation for the devolution deal, “We are not taking Chesterfield out of Derbyshire.” There’s £900million available over the next 30 years and £484million of which we can access in the next five years. The money Chesterfield will receive a share of as part of being a full constituent member will create 70,000 new jobs and 6,000 new businesses across SCR – that’s jobs and opportunity for this generation and many more after this one.

T

In fact, Chesterfield has been benefitting from SCR funding for years. It has helped create jobs in the town and get long standing projects underway – Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort to name just two. It makes complete economic sense for Chesterfield’s economy to become part of the deal. Chesterfield is a thriving town and we’re doing well with ambitious plans for growth and development over the next ten years; but we could do so much more. We must not overlook the fact that there are still real pockets of deprivation. We’re the 85th most deprived town in England. And we have to address this if the town is to thrive and succeed. This means creating jobs and building homes as a priority and that’s exactly what having access to the SCR pot of money will enable us to do more quickly than if we don’t have it. For the sake of Chesterfield’s residents – young and old – SCR is a table the town needs to have a seat at if we don’t want to fall behind our neighbours. The benefits of being a constituent member of SCR cannot fully be explained in 400 words, so I would urge you to take part in the current consultation. You can find out more at www.chesterfield.gov.uk/devolution, where there is also a link through to the consultation, which is open until Friday 12 August.
