Diamonds are forever… ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, EXAMINES THE LASTING APPEAL OF ETERNITY RINGS. ustomers often ask us when they should buy an eternity ring for their partner. This isn’t a straightforward question to answer; there is not a single event strongly associated with an eternity ring, as there is with an engagement or wedding ring. They are most commonly purchased as an anniversary gift, often to celebrate a special anniversary such as the first, tenth or twentyfifth. Other popular reasons are the birth of a first child or a special birthday. For most it is the sentiment that is important, and the occasion provides an opportunity for renewing the expression of love that has already been made with the engagement and wedding rings. A complete band of gems makes the perfect symbol of love; reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the eighteenth century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the twentieth century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used in eternity rings. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choice, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.
C
In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond set eternity ring. It allowed DeBeers to target an older, married audience and also provided an opportunity to sell more of the smaller diamonds not suitable for solitaire engagement rings! The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings. While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great
variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger. Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size. Whatever the occasion, an eternity ring is a beautiful way to reaffirm your love and our experienced team of jewellers and gemmologists can guide you through the process and the range of options available.

They are taking on a further charity appeal - having already donated 12 photographs to be hung throughout wards at the hospital - to thank doctors and nurses for their care, and have made a pledge to make a £20 donation to Jessop Wing for every family photo session worth £175, in a bid to raise awareness of a wonderful unit and help even more women benefit from the expertise of the city’s healthcare professionals. “I am so grateful for the fantastic care I received at the Jessop Wing during the birth of both of my children.” said Allie. “The care I received was above and beyond

THINK PRINTS, PALM TREES AND PINEAPPLES... THIS SUMMER’S HOME TRENDS TAKE ON A CARIBBEAN TWIST. BY LUCY HAINSWORTH. his summer’s trend consists of ornaments bursting with botanical bliss and pineapple prints, to give this season’s home a tropical twist. You’ll find plenty of palm tree and banana leaf clad homeware on the high streets right now, which are sure to give any garden party a holiday vibe. Leaf prints add a touch of nature to artificial features in the home, with lampshades and bedding making you feel like you’ve woken up in the great outdoors. You may even find birds of

paradise sneaking their way into homeware, with tables and chairs growing bird’s legs. The pineapples add to this tropical sensation and are usually coupled with fierce gold to give this theme a sophisticated yet playful look. Metallics are always a winner, so reinforce these with some silver of gold wall hangings. With décor like this, your house will certainly stand out from the crowd and make your summer feel a lot more vibrant and stylish whether you’re inside your home and out in the garden.

Maker, supplier and installer of bespoke curtains, tracks, poles and blinds. What is your role in your company?
Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?
I helped in the family party-planning business whilst at college. By the time I’d finished my studies the business had progressed onto selling readymade curtains, and it was naturally assumed that I’d join the business full-time, so I did. Fast-forward over 30 years and we now specialise in all aspects of made-to-measure curtains, blinds and related products.
“When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service.
Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?
It can be a major purchase and you do not want to get it wrong. We advise on suitable fabrics and finishes, take responsibility for the correct measurements being taken and manage the making and installation of the product.
What specific expertise can you offer our readers?
Many of the Moonlight team have been with us for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience in the trade. Therefore we can offer qualified, informed advice to our customers in store or at home. We are not fazed by specialist products like bay poles, decorative metal bay tracks and blinds. In our contract division we advise on, and provide, the latest in heavy commercial applications, cubicle rails, anti-ligature products and flame-retardant fabrics. When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?
We are constantly improving our workroom facilities and are looking to invest in new members wanting to join our team. It is paramount to us to retain the uniqueness of producing our bespoke made products on the premises. Trends and styles are constantly changing and it’s important that we keep abreast of that – we always have done and will always endeavour to in the future.

Dreams and desire
LADY MANNERS SCHOOL PUPIL LUCY HAINSWORTH, 15, EXPLAINS HER PASSION FOR HORSES AND RIDING. ike many other little girls, my childhood dream was to be an Olympic horse rider with my own collection of horses that resembled my muchloved My Little Pony figurines. For most of my friends, this dream fizzled out once they discovered the temptation of being a teenager. Suddenly partying and shopping is a much better way to spend your time than shovelling horse muck before and after the long schooldays. But for me, that dream did not fizzle out; it soon became my full time obsession. It is safe to say it has taken up my years of being a ‘normal’ girl, it definitely broke the bank... and my arm too. I had my first riding lesson aged nine, much later than anybody else I knew, as I had been living in America and never even got the chance. My nerves were high and the thought of letting a wild animal take control of where I was going was something I did not want to get used to. But, with a best friend
L

who had a passion for horses, I soon began to become familiar with them and found myself gradually falling in love with the idea of riding, not just as a hobby but as a sport. After a year of casual riding on the same overweight pony, the decision was made to buy my first horse; McFlurry was an old event horse with a heart of gold and a face of pure innocence. After several early confidence-knocking experiences, McFlurry finally gave me a feeling of confidence and I felt as if we shared a bond as we began winning shows, became a part of teams and got a good reputation for ourselves. However, McFlurry suddenly became lame, just two months after we bought him, with scar tissue damage. This caused an early retirement for him and left me very upset, without a ride or a best friend. Two years later, I now own my horse, Basil, which I brought on myself from being a young, inexperienced, trekking horse to being a placed British eventer and coming sixth at
our first event at Somerford International Horse Trials and successfully competing at many more events, our biggest being Chatsworth Horse Trials. We have placed second at Hickstead Eventers Challenge, seventh at the National Championships (which I have qualified for again) and many more as part of the National Schools Equestrian Association. I have achieved my B horse and pony care qualification through the Barlow Pony Club as well. However, this did not come overnight. With daily chores to do, many hours spent travelling up and down the country, and expensive bills that need to be paid, I know I don’t live a normal teenage life. It can be exhausting for me, my parents and their bank card. My shopping trips are for bags of horse food, parties come after a big team win, my workouts mean lifting buckets rather than a nice gym membership and sleepovers are spent in the horse box with my parents.
FEATURE
Throw in a huge amount of schoolwork, and this truly is a full-time passion. But, with the qualifications rolling in, the rosette stand getting full and the prizes getting bigger, the sensation is one that can only be felt through pure determination and satisfaction after knowing those early starts and long mornings are slowly becoming worth it. Even so, with setback after setback and fall after fall, this sport is not one for the easily dissuaded. It requires commitment, determination and bravery. Even when success does come it happens slowly, not after one competition. Every weekend is spent in showgrounds spread all around the country and summer is for training camps. I’m away from all the social gatherings, and it can feel like I am missing out on the all-important parties. However, in this process I have discovered it is possible to get changed and do my hair and makeup in ten minutes in the car, whilst on my way to my friend’s birthday party after a qualifier. That’s a life skill I bet none of my friends have. But in all seriousness, the hardest part about this extreme sport is having to quit my other much-loved hobbies to pursue one specific interest. I was a keen piano player, a dog agility enthusiast, a climber, an actress in the making and just a general socialiser before I got Basil. Now, with a strict training plan, riding lessons twice a week minimum, and GCSEs just around the corner, I had to
make a tough decision, quitting all but acting and riding. Yet riding is the one that definitely takes up my time. I’ve learnt the simple way to balance all my dreams and desires whilst staying mentally sane is to appreciate spare time, and not take anything for granted. No amount of stress or worry is going to get anything done quicker, or better. So, take a break, go out and win. That’s the motto of my life and it stops with me when
we’re all complaining about having to beat 50 other teams at different championships, in blazing sun or beating rain. With the mental strength to be able to remember a whole course of show jumps, and speed around them clear, without being able to see them because of the sheer fog and the painfully large chunks of hail, I’ve found myself having more determination and strength then ever before, which is a life skill that cannot be taught.

of fantastic sandy beaches, traditional towns, hillsides and parks to explore. Is it any wonder that it has become a firm favourite with so many British holiday-makers? Visitors can wander through Palma’s gothic quarter and wonder at its cathedral. Laze on golden sandy beaches or delight in the Tramuntana Mountains. Luxuriate in charming manor houses or relax in a sophisticated boutique hotel. For romance or fun, action-packed or lazy days, there’s something to suit everyone in Mallorca. The Balearic Islands comprise of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, with Mallorca the largest, the most popular, and the best known of these delightful islands. Mallorca is often likened to a continent rather than simply an island due to its variety in culture, history and natural landscapes and it is not surprising that the sheer beauty of the island captivates everyone who visits it. No other European island boasts more contrasting terrain, from the fertile plains of the centre to the almost alpine peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the northwest and across to the gentle hills of the Levante to the east. The island’s 500km of coastline offers a
succession of lovely coves, beautiful sandy beaches and secluded bays with some extraordinary caves to explore: notably the Caves del Drac near Porto Cristo. And together with a mild climate and a rich cultural history, it really does provide a delightful holiday destination. The highest peak in visitors is within the summer months, but there is in fact plenty to see and do all year round. Although if you are looking for a beach holiday, May to October will be the best time to visit. Temperatures during the winter months are usually quite mild and remain in double figures. For those who are looking to explore Mallorca’s cultural and historic sights, the winter season is perfect as there are fewer tourists. The city of Palma is a popular choice for city and short breaks with such a great choice of shops, restaurants, museums and galleries. Mallorca has something to suit all tastes: from designer shopping in Palma to haggling for leather souvenirs at the Inca market, from water parks to theme parks, from sailing trips to cruises and exclusive restaurants to tapas bars and evening entertainment shows.

THINGS TO DO: Amaze’n Laberintos
Palma de Mallorca International Boat Show
The maze at Playa de Muro is one of the largest in Europe, stretching for nearly 1.4km on the beach beneath the pines. It’s a great idea for family things to do in Mallorca with its water dragons, monsters, witches, clowns and magicians lurking around hidden corners. There are baffling puzzles and riddles to help or hinder your progress. Open daily.
A floating exhibition displaying more than 300 boats ranging from 6m to 35m in length, the International Boat Show is hosted in the Moll Vell port area of Palma during the last few days of April and first few of days of May. The show focuses on recreational sailing and the best of sailing as a sport. Inca Market
A fascinating network of caverns, the Arta Caves, on Mallorca’s east coast at Cap Vermell, are nearly 50 metres above the sea. The cave chambers rejoice in names such as Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The 22m tall stalagmite known as Queen of the Pillars is the highlight. Open daily it is a great attraction to visit when looking for things to do in Majorca.
Held on a Thursday, Inca’s weekly market is one of the best ways to get a feel for the real Mallorca. Although holidaymakers do visit in large numbers, the vast majority of customers are Mallorcans keen to track down a bargain as almost everything is sold there. The leatherwork is particularly good and high quality handbags, sandals and baskets are available. It is a great place for shopping and gifts.
Palma Aquarium
Old Town Alcudia
Exhibiting an exceptional variety of flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea, Palma Aquarium boasts a very large array of species, including fish from the Australian coral reef and sharks amongst the 55 different aquariums. The aquarium is another great attraction for adults and children alike when looking for alternative things to do in Mallorca, away from the beach. The aquarium is open daily.
Located in the north-eastern area of Mallorca is Alcudia’s old town. The town is surrounded by a moat and walls which were built over the 13th and 14th centuries by order of King Jaume II in order to protect its inhabitants. Now, the walls are an artistic historical site and are protected from further damage since part of the wall collapsed. Although the town has limited shops, there are cafés and restaurants serving traditional tapas and wine.
Arta Caves
There are also historical aspects about the town that are ready to be explored such as the roman theatre. A market runs on Tuesdays and Sundays 8.30am-1.30pm. Catamaran
Exploring Mallorca on land is fantastic, however, if you fancy something a bit different, why not explore the surrounding seas with a catamaran day trip, a great way to view Mallorca from another perspective. Offering a memorable experience with food, music and beverages, the charges are approximately 50 euros per person and 25 euros per child. Private hire is also available with prices varying between the different seasons. Cycle routes
The island has some spectacular cycle routes to please all sorts of abilities. Dramatically stunning views over cliff tops accompany your ride as you make your way to the most north easterly point of the island, Cap de Formentor. At the tip is the Formentor lighthouse, when you can take some refreshment and gaze over the stunning views which make the task of cycling up those winding roads well worth it.

Sheffield Club raises £5,800 for hospice with Sir Martyn Lewis lunch Veteran broadcaster and St Luke’s Hospice patron Sir Martyn Lewis helped raised £5,800 for the charity when he was the special guest of the Sheffield Club. The Sheffield Club provides a forum for the encouragement of contacts between its members, through regular lunches and special networking events. And Sir Martyn joined the organisation for a special lunch in support of Sheffield’s only hospice at popular city restaurant Baldwin’s Omega. “Guests enjoyed Sir Martyn’s stories of working in journalism and also his impassioned speech about how important hospice care is in Sheffield and the UK,” said St Luke’s community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “We are delighted that The Sheffield Club invited him to be their guest speaker and that the event raised such a great sum for our continued patient care.” PICTURED (L-R): St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland, Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Coombe, Sir Martyn Lewis, St Luke’s President Lady Anne Neill and Sheffield Club President David Batey
IT’S GOOD FOR THE GLEN The Glen Private Nursing Home was inspected in April 2018 by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and was awarded ‘Good’ across all categories (safe, effective, caring, responsive and wellled). Comments from the inspection report confirm the Glen’s values of care, dignity and respect for the individual: “People spoken with were very positive about their experience of living at The Glen. They told us they felt safe and they liked the staff. Staff knew people well and positive, caring relationships had been developed. “A programme of activities was in place so people were provided with a range of leisure opportunities. And we observed positive and caring relationships between staff and people using the service. The care staff were well trained and performed their jobs well. “A varied and nutritious diet was provided to support people’s health and respect their preferences, and the chef who was knowledgeable about people’s individual needs, likes and dislikes. “We saw in all cases people were cared for by staff that were kind, patient and respectful. People’s privacy and dignity was promoted and respected. “We found a welcoming, open and positive culture at the service that was encouraged and supported by the registered manager and assistant matron.” The Glen is currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment following the acquisition of the home by assistant matron, Kathryn Ferris, and her family, in May 2018. R is for just right PHOEBE SEYMOUR GETS HER HANDS ON THE HOT HONDA CIVIC TYPE R – A FAMILY HATCHBACK WITH THE SOUL OF A RACER. hen deciding on a new family car, one that has broken the record for the fastest time on the legendary Nürburgring racetrack in Germany doesn’t sound like something that would top your wish list, but then there’s more to the Honda Civic Type R than meets the eye. There’s no denying that the 2017 Type R is first and foremost a high performance sports car, but it has a softer side too. With three driving modes to choose from, this vehicle can change the way it reacts to suit your driving style – and, with plenty of room in the back, it’s suitable for a range of purposes. I went to Stoneacre’s Honda and Mitsubishi showroom in Chesterfield to find out more. “It’s a car for the driving enthusiast, who has a family,” says sales manager Dan Wheeldon. “It’s as close to a race car as you can get, but equally, it’s a practical car you can take to do the shopping.” As I went out to the forecourt to have a look at the test car, I could see what he meant. It had all the features you’d expect from a sports car, including a spoiler, three exhaust pipes and a red and black rally car-style interior. Yet, it was a four-door with comfortable back seats and a spacious boot. Next it was time to take it for a spin. Sitting behind the wheel, I liked how everything was within easy reach. The gear box was higher than in your

average car and the informative dashboard tells you everything you need to know (even how to start the car), so you can keep your eyes looking forward. All Type R cars are manual and petrolfuelled, and have six gears for when you really want to push it to the limit. The default mode you always start in is Sport. This increases the throttle response and softens the damper (shock absorber) so you can feel the speed, but can take corners with ease. Once I’d got out onto a straight country road, I relished hearing the roar of the engine as I put my foot down and reached an easy 70 mph. After all that excitement, I tried out Comfort Mode, which lightens the throttle response. Suddenly, all the lumps and bumps of the road were softened and the engine was
much quieter. A baby could certainly sleep soundly in the back – even when you reach the higher speeds. Finally, R Mode provides a maximum throttle response and hard damper for greater tyre contact, providing a stronger grip on the road as you move up through the gears. This mode had all the power of Sport Mode, but all the smoothness and precision of Comfort. I only wish I had a race track to really put this mode to the test. As Dan had promised, The Honda Civic was just as good at the more practical things. Being a fairly compact and agile car, I effortlessly slipped past cars on the tighter country and residential roads, and parking was made all the simpler with the rear view camera and parking sensors. I whizzed back to Stoneacre, satisfied that the Type R had delivered on its promises. It manages to be both an exciting car for a fun drive, and a practical vehicle, comfortable enough to take the family on excursions. Prices for the Honda Civic Type R start from £31,495 and the GT version is from £33,495. Call Stoneacre Chesterfield Honda & Mitsubishi on 01246 641135 to find out more and to book a test drive. THERE’S A NEW OUTLOOK FOR VOLVO AND MUCH MORE IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Road to success From its original launch in 2010, the A1 has been a huge success. Not only was it a very classy city car, but it was equally at home travelling the length and breadth of the country. Now we have an all-new Audi A1, starting with the Sportback variant (fivedoor). It is 56mm longer than the original A1 meaning there is more space on the inside. The boot capacity is now up 65 litres to 335 litres. Inside, the A1 is up-to-date with the latest Audi technology gubbins. Even the standard SE variant comes with a digital instrument binnacle. Engines available will be a 114bhp 1.0litre TFSI three-cylinder petrol, a 148hp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with the cylinder on demand efficiency system (COD) and 2.0-litre 197hp TFSI.
Luxury addition Do you want the ultimate in luxury and refinement from BMW? Then look no further as we reveal the latest chapter in the BMW luxury game – the 8 Series Coupe. Sitting at the top of the food chain next to the I3, the 8 Series Coupe is one of BMW’s flagship models. With its sporty performance figures, emotive design language and state-of-theart luxury and technology levels, the 8 Series will certainly be a hit. There will be two models, the 840d xDrive and 850i xDrive. The 840d is a 3.0-litre, sixcylinder diesel creating 320bhp; 0-62mph takes 4.9 seconds and combined economy is calculated at 46.3mpg. The 850i is a 4.4-litre V8 petrol creating 530bhp; 0-62mph takes 3.7 seconds and 28.3mpg combined. Priced from £76,270.
CAFÉ CULTURE Since the launch of the DS3 back at the beginning of this decade, DS (formerly a part of Citroen) really took the fashionable supermini to the next level, giving MINI many sleepless nights. Engines available are PureTech 110 S&S manual, PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 automatic and PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed manual. Priced from £21,305. Only 150 units will be built. CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER AT HOME, SAYS PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD. t is difficult to remember the last time we had such a long period of sunny, hot weather. For the first time in many years, we have experienced what feels like a proper winter followed by a proper summer! Rather than making alternative plans in case it rains, we are able to take advantage of the many open-air festivals taking place this summer‌ and we’re looking forward to them. The Market Square is alive with both shoppers and stall holders enjoying medieval fun days, the Chesterfield Motor Fest and the Artisan Market to name but a few. It’s not just the stall holders that are benefitting, it’s the surrounding businesses too. And what do we all want after a hard day’s shopping when we are foot-worn, hot and thirsty? A drink of course. CafÊs, pubs and restaurants throughout Chesterfield are moving their dining and drinking areas outdoors and it’s fantastic to see. It generates a very continental feel – just close your eyes and you can imagine that you are experiencing a bustling continental town. This comparison may be more of a reality than you think. Many years ago, when the Channel Tunnel was being built, a littleknown French Industrial town, Lille, was the site of a new Eurostar stop; a few years on,
I
and this town is now a tourist hotspot. Fast forward to 2033 when Chesterfield gets its HS2 stop and the same can potentially happen to us. Let’s face it, we already have much of the infrastructure, with a plethora of accommodation, new and old – from luxury hotels to boutique B&Bs, a bustling town
centre choc-a-bloc with quirky independent shops, a historic crooked spire and two fantastic theatres, and the Peak District is only 15 minutes away. Chesterfield has much to shout about. Maybe this is the year to make the most of the home-grown weather and have a staycation?
