SS Flooring

Floors to suit you down to the ground There’s a great selection at Layers Flooring – whatever you are looking for.

W

ith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things

SOUTHSIDE 6

around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t

get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield, S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield, S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield, S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

SS Weddings

Something old, something new Just where – and why – did our modern wedding traditions originate? Phoebe Seymour delves into the past.

A

h, white weddings. Traditions such as the gorgeous dress, the towering cake, and walking down the aisle are what a brides-to-be’s dreams are made of. It may sound like a cocktail for the perfect wedding ceremony now, but if you got hitched a few hundred years ago when these traditions were in their infancy, you’d probably find them less than romantic. From warding off evil spirits, to stopping runaway brides, here are just a few of the reasons why we celebrate weddings in the way we do.

ORIGINS OF MARRIAGE So, why do we get married at all? The concept of marriage is about 4,350 years old. Anthropologists believe that before then, families consisted of large groups (around 30) of loosely related people, with several male leaders sharing a number of women and children. As hunter-gatherers started to settle into civilisations and nurture the land, they wanted smaller and more stable family units. Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and guarantee that a man’s children were truly his. The first recorded marriage ceremonies between one woman and one man date back to 2350 BC, in Mesopotamia. Over the following several hundred years, marriage evolved into an institution recognised by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. Interestingly, marriage had little to do with religion or love to begin with. Love became a motivating factor during the Middle Ages, whilst marriage was accepted as a sacrament by the Catholic church in the 8th century. Marriage was then written into canon law at the Council of Trent in 1563. It was only later that the western world started adopting the wedding traditions we know today.

THE WHITE DRESS SOUTHSIDE 14

Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert in 1840 simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first... Mary Queen of Scots wore white to marry Dauphin François of France in 1558. However, this was considered scandalous at the time, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. The veil and train, on the other hand, originated in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flame-coloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. Similarly, bouquets used to contain garlic and dill, and bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse and ward off evil spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to him at the end of the ceremony.

THE CAKE

CHALLENGING TRADITIONS Some of our wedding traditions are so well established in our society, we forget about the loopholes and how fluid marriage laws can be. Here are a couple of examples of wedding customs tipped on their heads:

LEAP DAY According to an old Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men. The catch? They could only do so every four years on Leap Day – 29 February. Many women still think men should be the ones to do the proposing, but we say don’t wait for permission. Be a leading lady... and don’t forget that there’s one this year!

There are several possible reasons why we have tiered wedding cakes. In Ancient Rome, bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring the couple good fortune and in Medieval England, cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. From the mid-1600s, a bride’s pie was served at most weddings. It was considered rude and bad luck not to eat it. This was eventually replaced with a bride cake made of plums or fruit cake, symbolic of fertility and prosperity. Two cakes were then made – one for the bride and one for the groom. The groom would have a fruit cake which was usually smaller than the brides, whilst the bride had a simple pound cake covered in white icing. And this is where the trend-setting Queen Vic comes in again. Sugar was very expensive, so icing really showed off the social standing and wealth of the family. When Victoria used white icing on her cake, she coined the term Royal Icing. The first modern, tiered wedding cake appeared at Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany’s wedding in 1882.

SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED AND BLUE This tradition is believed to date back to 1898 and comes from an Old English rhyme which says, “Something olde, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe”, all of which are lucky charms carried by the bride on the big day. Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolises borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity, although this last tradition does not seem to have stood the test of time. In return, guests were traditionally given five prettily-wrapped almonds to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness as favours. Nowadays, we tend to use anything from the classic sugared almonds, to CDs, to lottery tickets.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

MEN WHO MARRIED MEN You may think gay marriage is a new concept, but you’d be wrong. Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled between 54 and 68AD, twice married men in formal wedding ceremonies. Homosexual weddings were common in second and third century Rome, but worried many people including social commentator Juvenal, who pointed out that male “brides” would never be able to “hold their husbands by having a baby”, and the Romans outlawed formal homosexual unions in the year 342. It’s taken over 1600 years, but same sex marriage was finally legalised in the UK in 2014.

hatever the time of year, there’s something deeply enjoyable about heading out into Derbyshire for a good meal, usually after a casual stroll through the countryside. Is there anything better than stumbling across a decades-old inn serving up delicious home-cooked food complemented by a roaring log fire? With the first winter snow on the horizon there was no such walk on the agenda this time but a pub and hotel on the outskirts of Chesterfield met our expectations nicely. The Red Lion at the Peak Edge Hotel has been causing a stir on the food scene for some time now, and with good reason. There’s a new kitchen team in place, led on this occasion by senior sous chef Blake Arnold, but standards remain extremely high, from the impeccable service to the presentation of the food. You’ll find plenty of home-cooked favourites on the menu throughout the day but the dinner offering is something special. It’s simple – four starters, mains and desserts – but is packed with flair, finesse and, more importantly, flavour. We were invited into the library to enjoy pre-dinner drinks (all the fireside seats were unsurprisingly taken) before taking our table in the spacious, yet already busy, dining room. We were greeted by a slate of home-baked breads and caramelised butter, which was delicious, only to be bettered by the arrival of our starters. My wife’s sweet scallops were accentuated by accompaniments of butternut squash purée, sharp pink grapefruit and a dusting of peanut brittle, a combination which worked extremely well together. In contrast, my well-seasoned

beef carpaccio was much more robust, almost earthy in flavour when eaten with the black garlic mayonnaise, confit egg yolk or beef jerky. A smoked apple purée added a little tartness. For mains, a perfectly-cooked fillet of halibut was given an Asian twist with the addition of kimchi and an almost ravioli-like crab dumpling. A seawood butter sauce, peppered with soy and ginger, was incredibly moreish and really added to the flavour of the dish. My wife’s lamb – shoulder and loin – was delicately presented with Lincolnshire broccoli, anchovy, potato, lemon, parsley and a hint of chilli. Again, the flavour hit was top notch. To accompany our main courses we both selected a glass of wine from an extensive list, which also included homegrown varieties from Derbyshire, Kent and Sussex. Going down the tried and tested route we chose a Faultline Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (for me) and a Tierra Antica Merlot from Chile (for her). Both were excellent. We enjoyed a welcome wait for dessert, largely thanks to my wife choosing the dark chocolate and orange clafoutis (a 10-15 minute wait is advised). It was well worth the anticipation and equally matched by a caramelised pear and toffee millefeuille. Speaking to Blake after our meal, he was keen to point out that this was still very early days for the kitchen team and things will only get better. Which means we’re in for a real treat. It’s worth noting that the Red Lion have special menus in place for upcoming Valentine’s and Mothers’ Days and theme nights run throughout the year and include everything from tribute nights to comedy and discos.

SS Heating

Peace of mind

To make sure your heating system is in tip-top condition, and to avoid any nasty surprises, choose one of the many service plans available at Blueflame.

O

ur boilers will have taken a big hit over winter – working hard to keep our homes a haven of warmth against the bitter chill outside. And as we come out of the worst of it and head towards spring, now is the ideal time to reward our boilers with some TLC and make sure everything is in working order. Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-based gas service company that specialises in providing annual service plans for central heating systems. Established 15 years ago, this professional family run business has over 60 years’ combined experience in the industry. Heating and hot water are things that we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise this until something goes wrong. When it does, it’s incredibly frustrating – and often very expensive. Service plans are a way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments. They help to ensure someone is always on hand to help if things do go wrong. With any boiler, the parts and labour charges that come with ad hoc repairs can be very costly. The advantage of a service plan is

SOUTHSIDE 34

the peace of mind it provides – as payments are made on a monthly basis you’ll have nothing to worry about, safe in the knowledge that there’ll be someone on hand to fix your system when it fails. Something that often discourages us from agreeing contracts is the small print – but there are no such worries with Blueflame. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12 point font,” says company director John Beevers. “You won’t have to trawl through a book of details!” Blueflame offers several different levels of cover, but the basic packages are silver, which covers boilers, or gold, which also covers the full central heating system. Compared to the larger national firms, prices are very competitive.

Blueflame specialise in service plans, but that’s by no means all they do. They offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and power flushing to mention just a few. Of course, when it comes to plumbing and gas businesses, the most important thing isn’t the services on offer but how trustworthy and reliable the company is. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Blueflame are – they’re Gas Safe registered, and members of Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme. What’s even more impressive is Blueflame’s fabulous reputation. They’ve got a database full of satisfied customers – many of whom return to this friendly company again and again. Blueflame are on hand to help all year round, so contact them today to be safe in the knowledge that you’ve already planned ahead for a cosy winter. SS Valentine’s

All you need is love With the most romantic day of the year fast approaching, Phoebe Seymour looks at the origins of St Valentine’s Day.

I

t’s fair to say that Valentine’s Day has become the Marmite of the holiday world. Cynics are increasingly annoyed by businesses that use it as a way to shift cards, roses and other gifts, whilst hopeless romantics look forward to expressing their love for their partners (potential or current) and being showered with tokens of love and attention. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that the love-fest known as 14 February is deeply embedded in our cultural calendars and is here to stay. But who was St Valentine and why do we send each other mushy love letters? Read on to discover the origins of Valentine’s Day and why we celebrate it in the way we do.

The original Valentine When it comes to Valentine’s Day, it’s difficult to attribute its origins to one man. The Catholic Church recognises three saints with the name Valentine or Valentinus, but at least two of these figures have merged over time. According to one legend,Valentine was a priest who served under Emperor Claudius II during the third century in Rome. Claudius had decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so outlawed marriage for young men.Valentine however, defied Claudius and continued to conduct weddings for young lovers in secret. In another version of the story,Valentine was arrested for helping Christian prisoners escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured.Valentine’s

SOUTHSIDE 38

actions were soon discovered and Claudius ordered that he be put to death. While in jail, he is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter's sight. Then according to a later version, he is said to have fallen in love with the daughter and sent her a note signed “From your Valentine” – hence why many of us sign Valentine’s cards in this way today. By the Middle Ages, St Valentine had become one of the most popular saints in England and France. Though it is tricky to separate fact from fiction, these images of St Valentine combined to create the heroic and romantic figure we now associate with all things love.

The pagan festival While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial, others think the Christian church decided to place St Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to compete with the pagan festival, Lupercalia. Celebrated between 13 and 15 February, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus. According to History.com, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification, before ripping the

goat’s hides into strips, dipping them into the sacrificial blood, and then taking to the streets to gently slap both women and crop fields with the hides in order to improve their fertility over the coming year. Some historians have even suggested it was young naked men who walked the streets of Rome spanking the backsides of young women – suddenly the idea of staying home alone on Valentine’s Day with a copy of Fifty Shades doesn’t seem so bad, does it?

The rise of the love letter Valentine’s greetings were popular from 500AD, but it wasn’t until the 1400s that written Valentines appeared. The oldest known Valentine still in existence today is a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife in 1415, whilst he was imprisoned in the Tower of London after his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated in the UK around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small gifts or handwritten notes and by 1900, printed cards began to replace written letters – most notably, Hallmark who produced their first Valentine’s card in 1913. Today, the Greeting Card Association estimates that 1billion Valentine’s cards are sent every year, making Valentine’s Day the second biggest card-sending holiday of the year (an estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent at Christmas).

or a winter break that combines a mild climate and a stylish setting you just can’t beat Cannes in the South of France, the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes offers a fabulous setting for escaping the worst of the British weather. This palatial property along the Croisette is one of the jewels in the crown of France’s luxury hotels, with an unequalled savoir-faire in terms of service and gastronomy – a haven that embodies the history of Cannes and the Riviera, embellished by a collection of unique photos which highlight the major moments in the life of the Cannes Film Festival. Recently renovated in keeping with the style of the Roaring Twenties, the Majestic boasts a spa, superb leisure facilities, plus two renowned restaurants: La Petite Maison de Nicole, a temple of Mediterranean cuisine, and the Brasserie Le Fouquet’s Cannes, whose menu has been designed and is overseen by the multi-Michelin-starred Pierre Gagnaire, voted the world’s best chef by his peers. The hotel’s extraordinary setting speaks for itself. Located in the heart of Cannes, with its luxury boutiques, the Palais des Festivals, and Barrière’s two casinos, Le Croisette Cannes and Les Princes Cannes, it is also home to typical narrow streets and squares, traditional markets and an elegant port teeming with luxury yachts and sailing boats which is brought to life when its fishermen return from a day at sea, not forgetting the

town’s museums and other permanent attractions. Add to this the Baie de Lérins, with its islands as its focal point, stunning by day and lit up at night like ships reaching up to a starlit sky, and the pristine and scented Estérel mountains, immortalised by great artists and perfect to explore on foot. The Majestic is offering guests a special break at prices (from €156) that are as attractive as the mild climate on the Côte d’Azur in winter, with a guaranteed view of the Baie de Lérins as a bonus. As the sea is part of the DNA of Cannes and the French Riviera, the Majestic has decided to offer guests booking a stay at this palace-hotel a complimentary upgrade to a room with a view of the Baie de Lérins and its islands, considered the pearls of the Mediterranean, and the Estérel mountains, with their everchanging palette of colours. This unique offer in the city of cinema and festivals is available until 31 March 2016, with prices from €156 (instead of €399). The Mediterranean is stunning at any price, making this an exceptional offer not to be missed!

SS Chesterfield Champions

Great things are happening, writes Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield.

A

s we enter February we are reminded that the Christmas period is well and truly over; diets have gone out of the window and many of us have turned our backs on our well-intended New Year resolutions. All in all it’s a pretty dreary month, and this prompted me to dig a little deeper and find some positives. I really didn’t have to look very far – specifically to the brand new £12m Queens Park Sports Centre. I was privileged to see the new Queens Park Sport Centre at a recent Chesterfield Champions breakfast event, 24 hours before it was officially opened by the Coronation Street celebrity Kym Marsh. Like her, I was extremely impressed with the outstanding facilities, it truly is a gem in Chesterfield’s crown. The breakfast event started at 7.30am and the centre was already buzzing with people using the new facilities and queuing to sign up for membership. What an amazing community resource. It was fantastic to witness the hard work of the many people who have made the new Queens Park Sports Centre happen. A big ‘thank you and well done’ to all those involved!

At the breakfast event, the hot topic on everyone’s lips was the proposed devolution involving local councils. With the subject being debated nationally, lots of questions were asked about what it means for Chesterfield. I see devolution as a positive. There is already a deal from Sheffield City Region on the table for Chesterfield which will bring us a share of £900m funding for local projects, including infrastructure and regeneration. Devolution means, ultimately, that we can have more control over things that we want at a local level rather than Whitehall making the decisions for us. Devolution will impact on all our lives and I urge you to get involved and have your voice heard before any decision is made that will affect all our futures long-term. You can find more information about this issue on the Destination Chesterfield website. Devolution is something that will no doubt be a key topic at our annual Celebrate Chesterfield event taking place at the Winding Wheel in March. Celebrate Chesterfield is the hottest ticket in town and each year it’s getting even bigger and better. I enjoy this event because it’s a great opportunity to look back and see how far we have come since the creation of Destination

Chesterfield in 2011. At last year’s event we announced that £1bn of regeneration was taking place in the borough – who knows what news this year’s Celebrate will bring? What I do know is that it’s going to be good! Great things are happening in our small town of which we should all be proud. Celebrate Chesterfield is the opportunity for us all to stand back, take stock and give ourselves a well-deserved pat on the back for what we have collectively achieved and to look forward to the future with confidence. You too can share in the success of Chesterfield. The event is free to attend; simply register at www.chesterfield.co.uk/ celebrate
