How Yorkshire’s coastal treasures are attracting shrewd investors THE RAPID RISE OF UK STAYCATIONS IS PROMPTING INTEREST IN BUY-TO-LET HOLIDAY HOMES AT FILEY’S LUXURIOUS NEW RESORT. Nikki lakeside lodges

Filey’s sandy shoreline recently featured in TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice list

hen it comes to investment, uncertain times call for innovative thinking. Where is cash being spent – and how can we capitalise on it? In 2020, the smart money is on UK holiday homes. Price comparison website Travelsupermarket.com recently reported a 50 per cent increase in enquiries about self-catering holidays in the UK. Figures reflect year-round interest – buying agents County Homesearch saw a 30 per cent increase in holiday cottage rentals last winter, compared with the year before. As a result, hidden gems such as The Bay Filey in North Yorkshire are flourishing, as holidaymakers choose to take shorter breaks throughout the year instead of one or two overseas trips. And people have grown accustomed to the good life – so where once a simple caravan or chalet might have fitted the bill, today’s aspirational tourists expect premium accommodation with luxury

W

facilities on their doorstep. According to Aria Resorts, which owns The Bay Filey, demand for property from investor buyers is rising, as they realise the money to be made from letting high-end holiday accommodation. “In 2019, around £3million was spent on holiday rentals at The Bay Filey, and this is set to grow in 2020,” says Paul Bingham, sales manager at The Bay Filey. “With our rental properties, through our managed lettings service, 70 per cent of the holiday rental revenue is passed back to the owner, which naturally has attracted a lot of investor interest in The Bay Filey’s properties. “People want to invest in something reliable. The fact our properties are fully mortgageable, with an ICW ten-year warranty and 999-year lease, makes them appealing to a wide range of people, from those who are retired, to young professionals looking to purchase a buyto-let to support their regular income.”

To support this interest and the growth in the region, Aria Resorts has invested £20million in a new gated development of state-of-the-art luxury lodges at The Bay Filey, to keep up with demand for buy-to-let holiday homes. The potential rental income from the new properties is estimated to be up to £35,000 per annum. “One of the best areas for buy-to-let holiday home yields is The Bay Filey,” says Paul. “Filey’s sandy shoreline recently featured in TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice list, alongside Bondi Beach in Australia, and Florida’s Siesta Beach, which was a fantastic accolade. “Filey continues to grow in popularity as more people choose to take coastal breaks all year round, at a location that’s not too far from home. That’s why we are encouraging investors considering Filey to make a move now, so they can capitalise on a full year of letting potential.”

The Bay Filey’s luxury lakeside lodges Aria’s new, gated resort at The Bay Filey will feature beautiful lodges in three different styles: the warm and inviting Nikki with natural materials and feature porthole window; the luxury New England-style Tahiti with its vaulted ceilings and sweeping deck; and the bright and spacious Kontiki, designed for families and groups with a love of sea, surf and the great outdoors.

Glowing recommendation THE NEW ONFIRE SHOWROOM ON ECCLESALL ROAD IS SPREADING WARMTH AND COMFORT THROUGHOUT THE REGION. nfire Inc. is the stylish and elegant new wood and pellet stove shop on Ecclesall Road and co-owners Steve Coleman and Catherine Sanderson are on a mission to bring comfort and beauty to as many homes and businesses in the Sheffield region as possible. Everyone knows the instant impact that a real fire can add to any room, from a cosy terraced house to the latest architectural new-build. And the selection of stoves in the Onfire showroom, from traditional woodburners to contemporary pellet stoves, ensures you will find the perfect way to bring warmth and a big dollop of comfort to your home or work environment. All the stoves are high end, qualitybuilt and at first glance the showroom looks more like a design studio. This is particularly true of the latest state-of-art pellet stoves, which come in a range of stunning, streamlined designs and can be customised to blend in with your home or business. But did you realise the new generation of stoves, as well as looking good and spreading warmth through any home or office, are also incredibly kind to the environment? The clean air status is all about the future and taking care of reducing emissions. An open fire is only 25 per cent efficient while some of the showroom stoves are up to 95 per cent efficient, which means they are looking after the environment.

O

22 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Steve and Catherine say: “Basically burning wood is carbon neutral, and the future of efficient wood-burning stoves is bright due to the technology advancing and improving all the time.” Pellet stoves, which are already hugely popular in mainland Europe and are rapidly gaining a foothold in Britain, are very efficient. They burn on bags of wood pellets, are cheap to run and particularly kind on the environment. In a nutshell, buy a stove from Onfire and you’re future-proofed against whatever clean air regulations may come into play in the future. Steve is Sheffield born-and-bred with 37 years of experience in the industry. He started as a heating engineer and also operates in renewable energy and HETAS. It’s a small family business, nothing is sub-contracted, every aspect of every job is kept ‘in house’. They also pride themselves on working alongside local businesses and always use trusted local craftsmen, a local granite house and a local cabinet maker to customise their work. And of course the kiln-dried logs which they burn in their showroom are also locally sourced. “A fire is the focal point of every home,” says Catherine. “Whatever is happening outside, people love stepping into a room and feeling warm and cosy, and that’s what we love about our job. From the beginning of the design to the handover we really care about our clients. “It’s a lifestyle choice and beautiful

things don’t have to be expensive. We just want to help people realise their dreams.” The Onfire showroom opened shortly before Christmas after a gruelling sixmonth renovation period, during which Steve and Catherine found comfort and inspiration in the words of one of their earliest clients, Sheffield steel baron Sir Andrew Cook. Steve and Catherine were working on a major house refurb in London for Sir Andrew a few years back, and when the project hit complications he told them that above all other attributes an individual may possess, persistence and determination were the key to success. It’s a mantra that has served them well over the years. Pop in to the Onfire showroom soon, and bask in the glow of a local success story that’s spreading warmth and comfort throughout the region. Classic blue

PANTONE’S COLOUR OF THE YEAR BRINGS CALMNESS, CONFIDENCE AND CONNECTION TO THE HOME, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. antone’s Colour of the Year was announced as Classic Blue (PANTONE 19-4052) and according to the colour-matching experts, this shade represents a dependable and stable foundation to move forward to a new era. “We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can rely on.” The bold hue brings calmness, confidence and connection (think traditional, soothing and strong) to any space and it is also versatile, which means it is going to be a popular choice. You can pair it with saffron yellow, soft pink and even rich forest green.

Fürstenberg

Contemporary since 1747, the Fürstenberg has produced porcelain that reflects the time in which it is created; the spirit, the attitude to live, as well as the aesthetics. With that in mind, for over 270 years, Germany’s second-oldest manufactory has been creating and producing ranges that have become icons of dining culture. This claim is also applied to each new design. It is Fürstenberg’s craftsmanship that characterises its quality most of all. Perfection down to the last detail is only possible because, even today, the majority of porcelain manufacture is still based on handwork. Nat Maks

The MARBLE mural is hand-printed by way of the traditional Japanese Art of Suminagashi and each roll is unique. Instead of designing patterns, Natascha

creates individual rolls of ‘paintings’ and with every mural made by the artist, each prepared and completed by hand, the murals freely reflect energy within its patterns. Each mural therefore has its imperfections; the colour overlaps, there are clear water markings and gaps within these patterns; expressing movement, imperfection and freedom. dave stone design by dan ashcroft

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “Complete Transformation” Our brand-new kitchen from Dave Stone Design has completely transformed our home. From our initial consultation with Jayne and Dan, right through to the final installation, our experience with Dave Stone Design has been nothing short of outstanding Jayne’s advice with the colour schemes and styling coupled with Dan’s innovative design concepts made for an overall vision of the project which was truly inspirational. Our previous kitchen was really small and difficult to manage. By removing three walls, a boiler and fuse board, Dan opened up a living space, which seamlessly combined aesthetics with functionality. Dan project-managed the building and installation work, and was always at hand to discuss tweaks and potential problems. Nothing was too much trouble for him and his highly-professional team. Enhanced by magnificent views, we now have a beautiful, spacious living area, where we can cook, dine and relax. The peninsular kitchen boasts a full-size Samsung combi-microwave oven, with gas on glass hob, integrated fridge/freezer, undermounted granite sink, quartz worktops, swan-neck tap, extractor ceiling feature and meticulously-laid LVT flooring. IN BRIEF

The Sheffield College’s Zest Quest Asia team Connor Johnson, Oliver Herrington and Ben Addy

Ponsford add extra comfort

Sheffield chefs compete

Family and friends at St Luke’s Hospice can look forward to a more comfortable stay thanks to a gift from leading Sheffield furniture retailer Ponsford. When the Ponsford team, heard that the charity needed a new sofa bed for the charity’s Family Room, they contacted manufacturers Alstons – and between them they came up with the perfect piece of furniture. Ponsford is a keen St Luke’s supporter and has held a number of fundraising events in the past, including its popular Gin and Jazz afternoons. “Quite often we will have family and friends who need to stay at the hospice overnight with loved ones and we always want to ensure that they have as comfortable an experience as possible,” said St Luke’s Director of Care and Lead for Healthcare Partnerships Jo Lenton. “This extremely generous gift from the Ponsford and Alstons team really will make a big difference at a time when people need our support the most.” Ponsford spokesman Luke O’Neil commented: “As a Sheffield company we are proud of our association with this great Sheffield charity. We were very pleased that by working alongside our colleagues at Alstons we were able to provide a practical solution to this issue.”

Sheffield College students have won a place in the national finals of a prestigious catering competition backed by one of the country’s top chefs. Three of the College’s trainee chefs Connor Johnson, Oliver Herrington and Ben Addy, all aged 18, will compete in Zest Quest Asia. Competitors will showcase their skills, knowledge and cooking techniques in a range of Asian cuisines in a live cook off on 7 February at Mr Todiwala’s Kitchen, the signature restaurant of gold sponsor Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5. Andrew Gabbitas, Catering Lecturer, The Sheffield College, who is mentoring the team, said: “I’m really proud of our students. This is a very prestigious competition supported by one of the country’s leading chefs. Taking part will enhance our students’ skills and industry contacts, and help them go further in their career.” The prize is a seven-day cultural visit to an Asian destination. Previous winners have visited India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Make a will – and a difference Some of Sheffield’s leading law firms are joining forces with St Luke’s Hospice for Will Month 2020. Statistics show that only a third of adults who die in Britain are covered by a Will. And even among the people who have made a Will, many will not have taken account of the fact that issues like marriage, divorce and other domestic changes mean a new document will need to be drawn up. St Luke’s Will Month is a partnership between the hospice and 12 top city solicitors, running for a strictly limited period throughout the whole of April. Participating firms include Banner Jones, Bell and Buxton, Best Solicitors, Graysons, Irwin Mitchell, Keebles, Norrie Waite and Slater, Taylor Bracewell, Coates, Foys, Wosskow Brown and Rosalind Watchorn. The idea is simple – the participating solicitor of your choice draws up a basic Will in return for a donation to St Luke’s. Suggested minimum donations are £100 for a single will or £150 for a joint Will, with a £75 suggested charge for a basic amendment. To find out more about Will Month call the St Luke’s Will Month hotline 0114 235 7551, email info@hospicesheffield.co.uk or visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk 46 www.sheffieldvibe.com

PROMOTION

Common law spouse – fact or fiction? BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ FAMILY DEPARTMENT, OUTLINES THE LACK OF RIGHTS THAT EXIST BETWEEN UNMARRIED COUPLES, OR THOSE WHO ARE NOT IN A CIVIL PARTNERSHIP. arriage appears to be becoming less popular; with more than seven million people living together in the UK. Recently, Resolution, an organisation dedicated to helping families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way, ran its cohabitation awareness week to raise awareness of the lack of rights that exist between unmarried couples, or those who are not in a civil partnership. Often, people who cohabit rather than marry or enter into a civil partnership, refer to themselves as “common law spouses”, generally because they live together as if they were married/civil partners but without the expensive party! The term common law spouse is also used on various data gathering forms to describe your living arrangements. I have always found this somewhat strange, especially when there is, in fact, no such thing as a common law spouse. It is a complete myth. The reality is that married couples/civil partners are treated very differently to cohabiting couples in the eyes of the law in the event of separation. Whilst the “common law spouse” myth often leaves cohabiting couples believing that they will have the same claims to their partner’s assets as they would if they were married/civil partners (because they believe they are common law spouses), this is not necessarily true. In fact, a cohabiting partner has no claim on any of their partner’s assets unless they have an interest. For example, they would have

M

no claim on the other party’s pension (which is often one of the highest value assets a person may have). Similarly, if the main home is owned in one party’s sole name (rather than jointly), the other cohabitee would not automatically have a claim; they would instead have to prove that they have an interest in the property (for example by way of contribution or express agreement). Contrastingly, for the married couple/civil partners, all of the assets would go into the “joint pot”, whether owned in one person’s sole name or jointly and then consideration would be given as to how those assets should be shared (whether equally or unequally depending on the circumstances). Another aspect where cohabiting couples differ from married couples/civil partners is the concept of spousal maintenance. There has been a lot of coverage in the press of late that stay at home husbands/wives have continued to be maintained by their spouse following separation. This is usually because it was agreed between the parties during their marriage that one spouse/civil partner would stay at home (usually) with the children, whilst the other focused on their career and became the “breadwinner.” However, for cohabiting

couples in the same situation, there would be no spousal maintenance for the lower earning party upon separation; they would simply part ways with no financial obligation to maintain the cohabitee who has stayed at home, looked after the children and supported the other in their career choices. A cohabiting partner has no claim on the other party’s income. However harsh this may sound, it is a clear example of the different remedies available to cohabiting couples versus married couples/civil partners. Therefore, next time you see the term “common law spouse” – remember, there is actually no such thing and the rights that each party may have in respect of assets can be limited. If you are a cohabitee and an asset is intended to be treated in a specific way upon separation (i.e. shared), it is important that you obtain the relevant legal advice as to how to protect your position, otherwise you could find yourself in a messy and costly situation. BUSINESS NEWS

New moves….(left to right) Elizabeth Shaw, Nick Lambert and John Baddeley from Wake Smith

Wake Smith chairman retires Wake Smith Solicitors’ chairman Nick Lambert has announced his retirement after nearly four decades in the law. Commercial litigation solicitor Nick Lambert has been with the Sheffield law firm for 12 years since it merged with Tofields in 2007 and also supervised the incorporation of Wake Smith Solicitors Limited in 2015 and the successful city centre move for the firm in 2016. Nick will retire from the company, and the law completely, at the end of April 2020 with corporate team director John Baddeley taking over as chairman in January 2020 and fellow litigator Elizabeth Shaw becoming head of the litigation department from December 2019. A new litigation solicitor will also join the team to take on Nick’s workload. For further information on Wake Smith’s business and personal legal services call 0114 266 6660 or visit www.wakesmith.co.uk John Baddeley, who was elected to succeed Nick as chairman, said: “Through all the challenges the firm has faced over many years, Nick has been a superb board member and has done an outstanding job as our Chairman in the last six years.”

Legacy Park looks ahead The new decade will see the start of a new era for the prestigious Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. The iconic development will follow a transformational 2019 with several significant business, health, wellbeing and sporting milestones throughout 2020. Project Lead, Richard Caborn, said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park through what has been a truly transformational year and I’m excited to say we’ll be kicking off 2020 with some further significant milestones. “These include the official opening of Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) in January, which is being led by Professor Rob Copeland. The AWRC will house the National Centre of Sport & Exercise Medicine Sheffield headquarters and consulting facilities, complementing the three existing Move More sites which currently deal with 80,000 clinical appointments per year. “We will also see construction start on the Community Stadium which is being developed by Scarborough International Properties. The new stadium will provide a permanent home for Sheffield Eagles Rugby League and Sheffield United Women Football, along with facilities for UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Oasis Academy Don Valley and local community groups and clubs.”

New Principal

A gong for Sally Sheffield-born former Abbeydale Grange pupil Sally Preston, founder and managing director of Kiddylicious, was awarded an MBE in the 2020 New Year Honours List for her achievements as an entrepreneurial exporter. Sally built up the business, selling healthy snacks for children, from scratch and sold it to Belgium-based Lotus Bakeries in July 2018 for £45million-plus. 48 www.sheffieldvibe.com

A new Principal has been appointed at UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Jessica Stevenson has 19 years’ experience in education and was Director of Inclusion at Mercia Learning Trust in Sheffield. Jessica said: “I am excited to join a trailblazing technical school that is ensuring students get the academic and technical skills that universities and employers need. I can’t wait to start as Principal in January and build on the fantastic work that has been achieved so far.” The UTC – which is Ofsted graded ‘good’ – is a technical school for 13 to 19-year-olds located on Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park on Old Hall Road, Attercliffe Common.

Award-winning apprentices fly out to Boeing

Vine’s new appointments Vine Hotels have promoted Charlotte Brook to the position of Operations Manager at the Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa. Brook has been with Vine Hotels for over six years and in that time has progressed through the company starting as a restaurant supervisor at its DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield Park Hotel promoted to Food and Beverage Manager and then onto to Operations Manager across the company’s Whirlowbrook Hall and Mosborough Hall. Her appointment at Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa follows the recent promotion of Dan Wilson who became Area Manager for the hotel. The hotel continues to go from strength to strength with the opening of its Laura Ashley The Tea Room earlier in 2019 which is proving to be a great asset to the property. Operated by Vine Hotels, the Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa is a luxury conference venue, hotel and spa in Sheffield. It’s just one mile from Sheffield city centre and easily accessible from the M1. The hotel combines a convenient location and idyllic country setting with its 12 acres of beautiful parkland.

Two model apprentices, who won big at the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre’s annual awards, have returned from the trip of a lifetime touring Boeing’s stateof-the-art factories in Portland and Seattle. Mary Stickland and Craig Horton, who are both from Rotherham, earned the opportunity to spend eight days in Oregon and Washington by winning the Siddall Achievement Award in March 2019. The prize, which was new to the 2019 AMRC Training Centre Apprentice of the Year Awards ceremony, was donated by retired Silicon Valley CEO Graham Siddall. From Attercliffe, Graham was an apprentice himself and attributes the skills he learned as a young apprentice to laying the foundation for a successful career in precision engineering and semiconductor technology. “As a former student apprentice, I have been enormously impressed with the AMRC Training Centre initiative and what it has given to the local community. I wanted to express my thanks and appreciation by giving the awardees a unique experience,” said Graham. Nominations for the annual awards are made by employers and trainers to recognise the achievement or contribution apprentices have made to industry, and are judged by a panel of AMRC Training Centre staff and award sponsors. “It was such a shock to win the award because I had no idea that I was even nominated,” said Mary, 22. “Graham stood in front of everyone, explained who he was and about his background, then he called my name out as one of the two winners.” Craig, 24, said the evening then got even better: “We went up on stage to meet Graham where he told us he had made plans for this trip to Boeing.” The week-long stay in the north west of the US concluded with a tour of the Boeing factory in Portland, Oregon by Global Program Manager Bill Gerry and then the chance to sit in a Concorde during a VIP tour of the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

New campaign website for the city A new campaign website to drive awareness and change perceptions of Sheffield has launched. The What Makes Sheffield website aims to celebrate Sheffield’s amazing stories of inventiveness and showcase the innovative research, initiatives and individuals helping to forge a new future for the city. Sheffield is pioneering developments in areas such as child health technology, digital technology, and advanced manufacturing – whilst continuing to contribute to the world in hugely significant ways through the applied research of the city’s Universities, helping to solve significant challenges faced by society and the natural world. The new website provides a valuable platform to highlight these Sheffield-led innovations to external audiences. It also aims to celebrate the collaborative nature of the city and the way that individuals come together to form unique citywide partnerships, that drive change and do great things. A new video telling this story of transformation, through the people who have experienced and/or helped contribute to it, has also been released and features on the homepage of the new website. Over the last few years, Sheffield has seen resurgence as a destination with urbanism, foreign investment, culture and booming new sectors flourishing in spite of austerity. Progressive developments such as Heart of the City II and Grey to Green have attracted international attention, as increasingly the city is being looked to as an example of sustainable regeneration with climate change resilience in-built as part of the urban environment. Kelham Island Museum The museum began welcoming visitors in 1982, serving as a collection of items related to Sheffield’s industrial history. Today, it also provides a stunning setting for weddings and other special occasions, boasting historical charm and an abundance of photo opportunities with unforgettable backdrops. The distinctive Victorian building offers to-be-weds and their loved ones a one-of-a-kind facility in which to celebrate and make lots of precious memories. It includes original features and interactive galleries for guests to view and tales from those who worked throughout the Industrial Revolution. Couples can choose to hold their big day in one of several spaces available, including the Millowners Arms and the main body of the museum. They may also opt for the museum’s upper gallery, a customisable area with room for Image courtesy Fox Moon Photography a dance floor and a live band or DJ. www.sheffieldvibe.com 51

Confetti North Yorkshire Moors Railway It’s full steam ahead if you want a wedding setting unlike any other because you can tie the knot on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Ever since the first legal “I do” on Platform Two of Pickering Station back in July 2016, loved-up couples in search of a unique marriage ceremony have followed suit. The Grade II listed building is surrounded by gleaming steel, burnished teak and the leafy Yorkshire scenery. Demand has been steadily growing thanks to word of mouth from this unusual but captivating setting. After your vows, enjoy drinks on the terrace and pictures on the footplate, before being whisked away on a private steam train to Grosmont. Afternoon tea and refreshments will be served onboard, so help yourself to a finger sandwich or freshly baked fruit scone as the panoramic vistas whisk past outside.

The Crucible If you love a night at the theatre, get married on the Crucible Theatre stage under the beautiful twinkling ceiling or in the floor-to-ceiling windowed Adelphi Room that looks out over Sheffield’s Tudor Square, and host your wedding breakfast in the foyer or studio theatre. If you’re planning a big wedding, the theatre can hold up to 980 guests, all with an excellent view of your vows. You can even hold your ceremony on the set of one of their productions and when possible, take photos in the Lyceum auditorium, a stunning traditional and theatrical backdrop.

Chatsworth House Chatsworth is the perfect place to say “I do” with a spectacular wedding in the heart of the stunning Derbyshire countryside and Peak District. If you are looking for something extra special, then the Chatsworth House wedding is perfect for you. The spectacular Painted Hall is licensed to hold civil ceremonies and civil partnerships and Chatsworth couples will be able to tie the knot on the steps of the Great Stairs in this truly magnificent setting. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, Chatsworth provides the perfect backdrop for your day. From the acres of parkland across the estate to the beautifully maintained garden, you are bound to find your ideal spot for those all-important photos and memories that last a lifetime. 52 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Holmfirth Vineyard Yorkshire might not immediately spring to mind when you think of vineyards, but this seven-acre wine estate produces sensational bottles. Holmfirth Vineyard is truly versatile: you can marry indoors or outdoors, with our favourite choice being a magical twilight blessing among the vines. The photo opportunities are incredible, and it comes with that famously friendly Yorkshire welcome, a range of packages and complete versatility of the vineyard to make your dream wedding come true with bespoke options for an indoor or outdoor ceremony, outdoor blessing or magical twilight wedding.

Waterton Park Hotel

North Shire

What’s so special about Waterton Park Hotel? Oh, not much. It’s only an enormous Georgian island mansion surrounded by a 26-acre lake, accessible by a picture-perfect iron footbridge. In all seriousness, Waterton Park Hotel is one of the north’s coolest and most unusual wedding venues, voted “Yorkshire’s Most Romantic” by the English Wedding Awards in 2019. This isolated paradise has everything a loved-up couple could want for their big day, and the eye-watering vistas don’t stop at the water’s edge either. Once you’re back on dry land, the vivid green parkland stretches out as far as the eye can see. So, after your picturesque wedding reception buffet or BBQ, feel free take a wander back over the bridge and see what delights Waterton Park’s outer reaches have to offer.

A dream wedding is every couple’s fantasy, but what if we told you the ultimate fantasy wedding is waiting for you in God’s Own Country? That’s the aim of North Shire, a pictureperfect family farm set in six acres of rolling countryside. Their big secret is the grassroofed Hobbit house that acts as the bridal suite – North Yorkshire becomes Middle Earth. That’s not all, though, the wedding itself takes on a fairytale enchantment, with fireworks, music and even fire-breathers available to delight and dazzle the wedding party. Once the party’s over, your guests can pick from gypsy caravans, shepherd huts or even bell tents for their accommodation, while you head back to the Shire House for a cosy night in a Hobbit hole under the stars.

Camp Katur A truly unique and rustic wedding venue is something that many couples desire, and our recommendations for you would be Camp Katur. The 250-acre manor estate has the capacity to host weddings in marquees, tipis, yurts and even their very own rustic barn. With a woodland of tall pine trees as your backdrop, what more could you possibly ask for? Camp Katur doesn’t hold a civil weddings license, and most couples go to a registry office a couple of days before their special day to sign the legal documents. You can then hold your ceremony at Camp Katur wherever you like, whenever you want, and how you want, making your ceremony unique and special to you both.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park We all know weddings can get a little wild, but not usually this wild. If you’re looking for unusual wedding venues, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is just the place. By partnering up with the four-star Crown Hotel in nearby Bawtry, you can tie the knot surrounded by wildlife. Set against the park’s stunning backdrop, you’ll start your magical day in the park’s panoramic Outlook Suite. Once the ceremony’s finished, it’s time to get up close and personal with the animals, with photos at one of their wildlife reserves – visit the giraffes, lemurs, the tiger walkway or polar exhibit. You and your guests will get the run of the park for two full hours, before the evening’s food and festivities continue in the Outlook Suite or shift into the Tsavo Lodge marquee – the choice is yours. www.sheffieldvibe.com 53

A stylish pub situated in the heart of the countryside in the beautiful village of Middle Handley

Ahhh where to start?! Our wedding day at The Devonshire Arms was perfect. The day was wonderful. The Devonshire Arms team were brilliant. Incredibly attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They helped to make our day everything we could hope for. Firstly, they made sure the ceremony ran smoothly. Then the chefs prepared delicious food and canapes which we and our guests thoroughly enjoyed. The bar staff expertly served drinks and cocktails to our large guest list. So many of our guests commented saying it was the best wedding they had ever been to! The day of the wedding was totally stress free. We started with the best hotel breakfast I have ever had and then we retired upstairs to the suite, which even includes a walk in wardrobe, to have our hair and makeup done. The suite is so big we could all be in there together, enjoying the lead up to the wedding whilst we got ready. An extra special thank you to Alex who organised everything wonderfully! You were amazing! Most wedding venues will claim to offer you the very best accommodation, food, drink and service for the special day... few, however, can pull it off like The Devonshire Arms did!! We would 100% recommend The Devonshire Arms for a wedding. Thank you Mr & Mrs Craig

Ring in the new year DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND WEDDING RINGS? AND DO YOU NEED BOTH? RACHEL MARTIN ANSWERS YOUR EIQUETTE QUESTIONS.

o, your partner chose the perfect engagement ring – big congratulations are in order. But what’s really the difference between engagement rings and wedding rings? And, if you love your engagement ring so much, do you also need to get a coordinating wedding ring to match? Can you simply wear your engagement ring after you’re married instead, or would that be bucking tradition a bit too much? Is it acceptable to even wear your wedding band on the opposite ring finger? We’re here to weigh in on all your burning engagement and wedding ring etiquette questions.

S

Engagement Ring vs. Wedding Ring: What’s the difference? Traditional engagement rings characteristically have one dominant stone, which either stands alone or is surrounded by additional smaller stones. An engagement ring is usually given as part of the proposal, or if not, at an early point in the engagement. By contrast, a wedding ring is usually a plain metal band or a diamond-encrusted eternity band 72 www.sheffieldvibe.com

that you receive during the wedding ceremony and wear from then on. Additionally, there’s also a major price difference between traditional engagement and wedding rings. Even if the wedding ring has stones, their total carat weight is usually less than the engagement ring and for that reason, a wedding ring costs significantly less than an engagement ring. You can, of course, throw tradition out the window. According to industry experts, women are now having more of a say in the designing of their ring and not only are brides parting with tradition, but they’re opting to diversify their engagement and wedding ring selections, with wedding bands offering the opportunity to embrace more flair.

The history of engagement and wedding rings Since ancient Egyptian times, engagement rings have been regarded as a symbol of love and commitment; their rings crafted out of plants growing along the Nile River. The ancient Romans were the first to place the engagement ring on the left ring finger, believing it directly connected to the heart and in 1477,

072 - 073 WSide Feb20_Layout 1 17/01/2020 10:47 Page 2

“Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart.” Archduke Maximillian presented the first recorded diamond engagement ring to his beloved Mary of Burgundy. Before this event, engagement rings consisted mostly of plain metal bands or less expensive gemstones. Maximillian’s diamond ring sparked a trend in Europe and across the world. During these earlier centuries, diamond engagement rings represented who the woman was committed to and it showcased the social and financial status of the man she was marrying. The ring, which is in the form of a circle, is a sacred symbol. With no beginning and end, the circular ring signifies wholeness, completeness and eternity.

How to wear your engagement and wedding rings Traditionally, you wear your engagement ring and wedding ring stacked on the fourth finger of your left hand. As far as how to stack them: tradition holds that the bride wears the wedding band inside the engagement ring so that it’s closer to her heart. Some like to wear their engagement ring on one hand and wedding band on the other, especially if they’re diversely designed rings that can’t be stacked.

When to pick out wedding bands Industry experts suggests that couples pick out wedding bands at least two months before the wedding; that way, you can account for any lastminute wedding planning details that might pop up while your rings are already in production. If you’re unsure about the kind of wedding band you want initially, wear your engagement ring for a few months before you choose the wedding ring. Your preferences might change, so take your engagement ring for a spin to get a better grasp of the wedding band you’re envisioning closer to the wedding day.

Do you need both an engagement and wedding ring? Ultimately, this really comes down to personal preference. If you like the traditional look, then yes, of course. Whether you’re adding an eternity band set with pavé diamonds or a plain metal band, a wedding ring/engagement ring stack is a timeless and beautiful look. Rings on their own, of course, are also gorgeous and instead of a separate engagement ring and wedding ring combination, some people opt for only a single ring. Why? Single rings can be more comfortable and less fussy than a stacked band and engagement ring combo and it’s one less ring to have to worry about losing, and you don’t have to worry about two rings perfectly lining up, either (it can sometimes be tricky to find a wedding band that matches and lines up perfectly with your engagement ring if they’re not purchased at the same time). You can also make a bigger investment in a single standout ring. The bottom line? There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing, designing or wearing engagement and wedding rings. You can wear none, one, two, three rings – the only rule you should follow is to make sure you choose whatever makes sense to you.

Winter warning

IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE WINTER IS POSSIBLY ONE OF THE WORST SEASONS FOR OUR APPEARANCE. FEBRUARY IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO GET THINGS BACK ON TRACK AND NOURISH OUR SKIN, HAIR AND NAILS WITH SOME SIMPLE BEAUTY RESOLUTIONS.

Hair

Body

Our hair can be particularly damaged during winter, but there are easy ways to salvage your shine and bring back the bounce. To avoid breakage, brush your hair starting from the ends and work your way up to the root. Other tips include washing the hair with lukewarm to cool water, as very hot water can have a damaging effect, similar to using heated tools. When it comes to washing your hair, make sure all products are fully rinsed out to avoid irritating the scalp and use a good conditioner to keep the hair looking and feeling healthy. After washing, do not brush the hair immediately, comb through with your fingers first and then reach for the brush. As hair begins its journey in the body, diet is also crucial and certain foods that affect acne-prone skin can also flare up a problematic scalp. Other foods are very good for your scalp, like Omega 3s found in fatty fish like salmon.

opt instead for a chemical exfoliator (which gently remove surface dead skin cells) with ingredients like salicylic and azelaic acids. It might not seem necessary, due to the total lack of sunshine, but if you’re going to make any changes to your skincare routine this year, add an SPF to your routine. UV protection by day. Retinol by night. Two skincare decisions the future you will thank you for.

No one feels like slathering on body lotion after a shower on a cold morning and we find ourselves with the ‘out of sight out of mind attitude’. Despite being less on show than in summer, the skin is the body’s largest organ and needs to be taken care of accordingly. It might not seem appealing, but applying body lotion as soon as you can after drying off post-cleansing or bathing helps lock in moisture, and avoid fragranced moisturisers, which can lead to skin irritation (look out for ones containing vitamin E and aloe vera to soothe and hydrate). Another skin-saving resolution is to nourish your skin from within by drinking enough water. Water will help flush out any toxins from the body and will help your skin, hair and nails to flourish.

Face During colder months, taking care of our skin should be even more of a priority than in summer, and just a few resolutions will help restore your glow and can reduce puffiness and dryness. Try cleansing as soon as you get home in the evening and you will soon be in a routine, or maybe after dinner perhaps (instead of leaving it until bedtime when you may persuade yourself that you are too tried to take your make up off). Cleanse thoroughly with a product that is effective at clearing makeup and doesn’t strip the healthy lipids from the skin. Cut back on physical exfoliation and 76 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Perfect partners

PA JEWELLERY ARE EXPERTS IN MATCHING A WEDDING BAND TO YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING. HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR. ongratulations! You’ve found ‘the one’ and are ready to say, “I do”. There are many things to organise ahead of the big day, but one of the most important is your wedding rings. It isn’t just you gaining a partner for life; your engagement ring is too! For many brides finding the perfect match for their engagement ring is the key factor when selecting a wedding band. How straightforward that is will vary, but we are here to help you find ‘the one’. A useful starting point for matching a wedding band to your engagement ring is to consider the shape. Many modern engagement rings are designed to allow a wedding band to sit neatly alongside them, which is helpful as it means most standard rings will fit perfectly and you simply need to choose the style. However, some cluster or

C

twist designs, or more traditional settings, may require a shaped or bespoke band to ensure a close fit. An ‘off-the-peg’ shaped band may do the job well, but if you can’t find just the right thing then a bespoke ring may be the way to go. Our onsite workshop can hand-make a band to follow the contours and profile of your engagement ring. This may be plain or set with diamonds to add some extra sparkle. We start by making the ring in silver, so you can try the shape and make adjustments. Once you’re happy the ring is cast in the correct precious metal to match your engagement ring. A further fitting before any diamonds or special finishes are added ensures the size and shape will be spot on. If you don’t need a bespoke shape, you can still make design choices that allow your rings to complement each other as perfect partners. This might be ensuring

the width and profile are the same or matching a patterned design. If your engagement ring features diamonds in the band, then matching the shape, size and quality and choosing the same setting style can create a set that looks made to be together. If you need help finding ‘the one’ for your engagement ring or aren’t sure where to start, then we can help, with hundreds of styles to choose from and our workshop ready to help with your bespoke requirements. There’s no need to book an appointment, just visit our showroom where our experienced jewellers will talk you through your options. MUSIC Paul Carrack 2 February / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Paul Carrack and his awesome six-piece band take to the road again for the 30 date 20/20 Tour. Paul, whose vocals have graced million selling songs such as ‘How Long’ by ACE, ‘Tempted’ by Squeeze and the Grammy Award nominated ‘Living Years’ by Mike and the Mechanics, is now firmly established as one of the hardest working, independent musicians on the scene. And he’s a local boy, to boot.

New Rules 19 February / O2 Academy www.o2academysheffield.co.uk Following their sold out 2019 headline tour and support slots for both Julia Michaels and Little Mix, New Rules have announced a major headline UK tour for February 2020.

The Sherlocks 21 February / O2 Academy www.o2academysheffield.co.uk Sheffield indie quartet, The Sherlocks, will hit the stage stronger than ever, performing tracks from their highlypraised second album, Under Your Sky.

The Script 26 February / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk Irish alt-pop trio The Script embarked upon a new chapter with the release of their new album in November. ‘Sunsets & Full Moons’ is the sound of The Script – Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power – focusing on the inclusive, uplifting songwriting that helped them become an arena-filling band with a fervent fan base the world over.

Stereophonics 28 February / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk With unparalleled longevity and continued success, Stereophonics are a band woven into the fabric of popular music. Kelly Jones continues to cement his place amongst the great British songwriters with an ability to sketch and capture truth and beauty from everyday observations as well as delving into his own life experiences. They went down a storm at Tramlines in 2018.

COMEDY Stewart Lee 6-7 February / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Also 15 February / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk Snowflake/Tornado is a double-bill two new 60 minute sets, performed back to back each night. Tornado questions Stew’s position in the comedy marketplace after Netflix mistakenly lists his show as “reports of sharks falling from the skies are on the rise again. Nobody on the Eastern Seaboard is safe”. Whilst Snowflake questions his worth in a society demolishing the liberal values he has been keen to espouse in a fairy-tale landscape of winter wonder.

John Shuttleworth’s Back 6 February / Crucible Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Also 9 February / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk Years of stenuous DIY, not to mention playing his organ whilst perched upon a multi-pack of Diet Sprite and no lumbar support has taken its toll. But – ever the trouper – John returns to regale audiences with an evening of his classic songs, pausing only to apply deep heat rub.

Shappi Khorsandi 17 February / The Leadmill www.leadmill.co.uk Comedian, author, cultural icon and idiot who agreed to be tortured on ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!’, Shappi Khorsandi is a woman of many parts. But live comedy is where she’s in her element, and now – after her spell in the jungle – she sets out for the more welcoming destination of Sheffield. A brand new hour of sharp-tongued gags, cultural observation and whatever else is in her easily distracted mind this time around.

David Baddiel 28 February / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Also 2 February / Buxton Opera House https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk David Baddiel comes back to the stage with a brand new one-man show, Trolls: Not The Dolls. Burning passion

IT’S TIME TO HEAT THINGS UP... WE SPOKE TO STRICLTY STARS GORKA MARQUEZ AND KAREN HAUER ABOUT THEIR FIERY FORTHCOMING CITY HALL SHOW. t sounds like something from a fairytale romance. A couple of fiery Latin kids, each drawn inexorably to dance, one in Venezuela, the other in Spain. They crave their paths through Fame School in New York and European competitions, before eventually meeting on the biggest dance TV show in the world. And then they meet, sparks fly and they create their own dazzling dance show, Firedance. But it’s no fairytale – it’s the real life story of Gorka Marquez and Karen Hauer, that show is Strictly, and that tour is headed your way in 2020, arriving at Sheffield City Hall on 12 March. Expect the sequins and feather boas to make way for hot pulsing beats, seductive choreography and passionate performances that will take your breath away! With an incredible live band featuring Latin musicians and a dynamic dance ensemble performing Argentine Tango, Flamenco, Contemporary, Paso Doble, Samba and Salsa, audiences can expect an amazing show of fresh and exciting dance from two of the world’s finest. Gorka beamed: “I always wanted to do this. I wanted to do something different. We knew it would be a great opportunity. Karen and I have been dancing and doing shows for the last year together and we felt like we were locked in. “We want to take on what people have seen and show them it can be even better. There are so many shows right now that we wanted to create something different, something from a different perspective and I think it’s very good that both of us are Latin, we share that kind of mentality and point of view of what we want to show and be more passionate, more fiery, with strength. “It’s all about passion. Not like classic sparkly ballroom, even the outfits, it’s more street fashion with a Latin feel. Less sequins and more fire.” For Karen too, their shared Latin heritage is the key to the show and its

I

appeal – and why audiences are going to go wild for their flaming hot routines. She said: “What I love is that we’re focusing on certain dances. Because sometimes, if there’s too many things, then it can kind of bleed too much, it can just get a little bit fluffy but we wanted to focus on those fiery dances. Those dances that kind of get people emotionally and let people know that we really want to show that power, that strength but also the beauty that all of the dancers have within them. “We’ve narrowed it down to some specific dances because people really love watching the tango or whatever, because they are dances that are really meaningful and that really kind of connect with people and have that power behind them. So we thought let’s connect to those dances.” You might expect those fiery tempers to flare and clash, but it turns out the opposite is true. Instead, it’s been a matter of channelling that fierce passion into the dancing, and creating something truly special. Karen said: “We’re very temperamental, yes. We know that we’re both fiery, yeah, but I guess the fact that we know that about each other means it doesn’t need to come out, it doesn’t clash, it means we can work together. “From the music to the costumes, to every single little detail that’s going to be on that stage has come from Gorka and myself. We’re going to have a great team around a great band, great singers, and us. “It’s coming from a place of, of truth. It’s something that we need, that we’re really passionate about. It’s always a plus that you get to put out there what you really want to put out there. I love working with Gorka. He’s such a lovely man and a beautiful dancer who I really look up to.” Gorka agreed: “As soon as Karen and I started dancing together we were like – wow, this is fun. We were getting on so well from the start. I remember when we met for our first shows. We had to do

five numbers and we had them like, in two hours. So we realised, this is a thing you know, when you click with someone, and the ambition, the connection, it was like we were able to see in each other’s brains at the same time.” Karen moved to the UK when she landed the Strictly job and that’s where the pair met – and they both love the idea of their show landing international success in their own right. Gorka said: “I would love to go international with this, there’s not so many dancers who can do that. I would love to be able to go back to Spain and do this show in Spain. All my family are there but the biggest things I have done have been in the UK so to show over there even for a night or two nights to my family and friends what I have done would be incredible.” Karen said: “Even to this day I have to pinch myself. When I got the call for Strictly I fell on my knees and I cried, I hadn’t worked for four months and was living on my savings. “None of the dancers that were there then are there now except Anton and myself. He’s the longest running male and I’m the longest running female. I’ve been in it for eight years. It is incredible it really is and a joy to be around. I’m gonna be there until they drag me out. I still can do at least another five to seven years. “Gorka and I first met on Strictly, I saw that he loved salsa and he loves the flamenco and those are the dances I loved as well. But we actually only started dancing together this year. We just clicked. We both said I think we should take advantage of this and do something more and see what happened. And all of a sudden Firedance was born.” Firedance is at Sheffield City Hall on 12 March. For ticket details, visit www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk or firedancelive.co.uk

A night to remember

THE PREPARATION FOR THE 2020 WESTSIDE RESTAURANT AND BAR AWARDS HAS BEGUN – AND WE HAVE A BRAND NEW VENUE AND SPONSOR. he OEC is the new home and the main event sponsor for the 2020 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards. We are delighted that this year’s event will take place at Sheffield’s newest dining and events venue on the evening of Monday 8 June. restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! Now we’ve found the perfect venue, the search is really hotting up for the finest dining and drinking establishments across Sheffield and North Derbyshire, as we look forward to the 2020 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards. This year’s event looks like being bigger and better than ever. As the Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards has grown in size and stature over the years we’ve sometimes struggled to find a venue big enough to squeeze all the guests into the same room. But the versatile nature of The OEC means that will no longer be a problem. The Rivelin Suite on the first floor can be broken down into separate suites to suit the size of the occasion, catering for up to 500 people. The OEC has a contemporary kitchen that can cater for all dietary needs and any requirements from casual dining to the finest banqueting menus. So with an exciting venue settled and a date in the diary, the search for next year’s winners is set to intensify. Who will come out on top in 2020? Last year Brocco on the Park won our Restaurant of the Year award for the second year running. Last year was also particularly strong for newcomers with recently opened establishments such as Omega at Abbeydale (Best Newcomer), Chinatown (Best Oriental) and Bank House Hathersage (Best

All will become clear in the next few months as we search out the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting over the last year. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. The response from the people of Sheffield and further afield was incredible. “More than 11,500 people visited our Cathedral, many of whom had not been in the Cathedral before. It was wonderful to see so many families here. “Nearly 90 per cent of visitors rated their experience of The Angels are Coming… as ‘good’ or ‘very good’, the majority rating it as ‘very good’. So we are thrilled to be working with Peter Walker and the Luxmuralis team again for The Observatory. INTERVIEW

Think big THE OPPORTUNITY TO RUN ONE OF THE CITY’S LARGEST KITCHENS WAS TOO GOOD TO TURN DOWN, SAYS HEAD CHEF OF THE OEC, SAM LINDSAY. s head chef of The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – Sam Lindsay can find himself responsible for feeding up to 500 people in a single evening or lunchtime. One day over the busy Christmas and New Year period he was head of a team that served up 750 meals in a single day. The job of heading up the catering division of Sheffield’s newest and biggest dining concern seems just perfect for Sam, who joined the late and much loved Baldwin’s Omega as an apprentice and stayed for 20 years, the last 15 as senior sous chef. But when Baldwin’s closed in July 2018, Sam could have gone in a very different direction. He’d learned all the tricks of the trade about cooking for large numbers from the indomitable David Baldwin, but memories of being sent by ‘Mr B’ on work placements to smaller, high end dining establishments such as Rick Stein’s seafood restaurant in Cornwall and Langan’s Brasserie in London did give Sam pause for thought. “I did wonder whether it was time to scale down and work in a smaller kitchen,” he recalls. “But then this opportunity came along, a chance to do something from scratch for big numbers. It’s what I was trained to do for 20 years, and it seemed silly to say no.” For Sam one of the big attractions of working at a brand new venue was the

A

98 www.sheffieldvibe.com

opportunity to command a kitchen that had been specifically designed to meet the demands of cooking for large numbers. “So many old hotels have been knocked around and altered over the years, you end up carrying the food along endless corridors before it can be served. “So having a purpose-built conferencing and banqueting kitchen, where everything has been thought through, is great for me.” There are in fact two kitchens at the OEC. Downstairs is the ‘prep kitchen’ where all the heavy lifting is done in terms of cooking and food preparation. This includes some seriously impressive new kit such as the £20,000 bratt pan, which works like a giant pressure cooker and can cook 150 lamb shanks in 40 minutes, as opposed to three hours in a conventional oven. Food is then transferred upstairs in a lift to the second kitchen, which has double doors which lead directly into the main dining room. It all seems perfectly thought through, so what’s the main skill in cooking for several hundred people? “It’s a team effort,” says Sam. “You have to talk to your client and know exactly what they want but but while some dishes work better than others I’d say it’s possible to cook almost anything from fresh. “I don’t like to buy anything in. A lot

of hotels might not bake their own bread or cakes or make the desserts but my view is the chefs here can all cook, we’ve got the equipment, so we do it all here. “I don’t shy away from a challenge. If you want scallops for 300 people that’s what we’ll do. But certain foods just will not wait – once they’re on the plate they need to be sent straight out of the kitchen and eaten. “That’s why you don’t just need to have a good team in the kitchen. You need a good relationship with the frontof-house staff and an operating manager who is spot on when it comes to getting everyone sat down on time.” Opening just before Christmas was a real baptism of fire for the OEC team, with a heavy programme of parties and celebrations, but now they are settled in to their surroundings with a busy diary for 2020 of tribute nights, charity balls, school proms, conferences, boxing and kick boxing events – plus, of course, the Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards on Monday 8 June. All in all, it looks like being a busy and successful year for the man running the kitchen of the city’s newest events and conferencing venue. EATING OUT

Home from home

NO BULL, THIS POPULAR SUBURBAN PUB IS AT THE HEAD OF THE QUEUE WHEN IT COMES TO CLASSIC COMFORT FOOD, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. good old-fashioned local pub with a decent selection of cask ales and a food menu packed with crowd-pleasing family favourites is something to savour, and the Bulls Head at Ranmoor delivers precisely that. Under the careful stewardship of landlady Heather Gamwells, who combines front-of-house duties with her own delicious home cooking, The Bulls Head has built up a loyal following over the last few years, and a recent visit for Sunday lunch made it easy to see why. Sunday, it turned out, is the best day to sample the full range of dishes coming out of the kitchen. As well as a set Sunday lunch (great value at £13.50 for three courses) there’s also the chance to sample the normal Monday to Saturday menu which includes a freshly made pie of the day and choose-your-own-topping pizzas. I found that Sunday lunch deal irresistible and got off to a good start with some plump and juicy garlic and chilli prawns, with sourdough bread to soak up the punchy dressing they were swimming in. A selection of roasts followed and I made a good choice with the Whirlow Farm pork. A big plateful of moist, lean,

A

102 www.sheffieldvibe.com

flavoursome pork, a large Yorkshire pudding and plenty of beautiful roast potatoes was accompanied by a huge bowl of fresh seasonal vegetables including red cabbage, parsnips and cauliflower cheese and a gravy boat that was full to the brim. It was a very generous plateful of comfort food, perfect for a dull winter’s day. And it’s worth repeating, that roast pork was absolutely delicious. On the other side of the table my friend Glynn tackled the mainstream seven-day menu and with no less than four soups to choose from, made a good choice with a thin but flavoursome stilton and broccoli soup (£4.50). Pie of the day was chicken and vegetables (£9.50) and ticked all the boxes for flavour, texture, and rib-sticking Sunday happiness. Served in a large, deep casserole dish, there was plenty of veg and chunks of tender chicken encased in a lid that seemed like a cross between a dumpling and thick pastry. It certainly worked as the ideal soaker-upper, with peas, chips and gravy to complete the picture. We both rounded our meal off on an indulgent note with warm chocolate

fudge cake and cream for me and apple and blackberry crumble with ice-cream (£4) for Glynn. Incidentally there’s always something new on the menu to try. Heather’s been experimenting with different types of batter for her whitebait starters and after testing a new fish pie recipe on regulars and getting the seal of approval, it will be added to the list of pies. Meanwhile if you can pull yourself away from the food, there’s a full menu of big screen football to keep sports fans happy and a busy social scene. New Year’s Eve was a black tie, ticket-only party that was sold out weeks in advance. Needless to say a fun time was had by all. EATING OUT

Late to the party

A NEW MENU AND A NEW EXPERIENCE BRINGS RICHARD ABBEY BACK TO MOSBOROUGH HALL. f memory serves me right, I don’t think I’ve been to Mosborough Hall since a spate of 21st birthday parties in the early noughties. Given that I grew up in this south-eastern corner of the city, it’s perhaps strange that I’ve not been more of a regular visitor. Sometimes it’s easy to miss what’s right in front of you. A lot has changed since those heady days, not least for myself but for the hotel, which now operates under the Best Western Plus banner as part of the Vine Hotels group. There’s no denying the hotel’s charm, which retains much of its historic character despite being extended and improved over the last couple of decades. Originally a 12th century manor house, you’ll now find grand beamed ceilings and huge stone fireplaces juxtaposed with contemporary glass and stylish décor, all set in attractive grounds which sit on the border to Derbyshire. Given the time of year we couldn’t appreciate the charming views but found respite in the equally endearing Darcy’s bar, housed in a very contemporary and classy glass extension which marries together different parts of the sprawling 46-room hotel. It’s a stunning space.

I

104 www.sheffieldvibe.com

A few steps take you into the restaurant where again you’ll see more examples of old and new working in harmony. It’s a bright space, with dark wood tables complemented by cream walls and subtle splashes of lilac and mauve. We were here for the launch of the hotel’s new menu, overseen on this occasion by young head chef Alex Fretwell. Home baked bread (£3.95) served with Henderson’s Relish and beer butter got us off to a good start while we deliberated over our choices. Crisp pork belly, with Granny Smith gel, burnt onion and honey jus (£6.95), was equally melt-in-the-mouth tender and crispy where it should be while across the table, my wife’s goats cheese curd with fennel pickled beetroot carpaccio, shallot puree and tuille (£5.50) was light and delicate. The tuille in particular, a sort of brittle made with different seeds, was particularly good. Sampling large glasses of Castillo de Piedra Viura (£7.20) and Spearwood Shiraz (£8.20) between courses, the mains continued the high standards. My rainbow trout, served with pancetta glazed fondant and creamed leeks (£13.95) was harmonious, with each element complementing each other perfectly. My

wife’s Pork Two Ways – pork loin, ballantine, creamed potato, pancetta and pork jus – (£15.95) displayed finesse and was packed with flavour and texture. We finished with a yoghurt panna cotta (£6.50) and glazed lemon tart (£6.50). While both were very good, special attention should be reserved for the accompanying sorbets, blood orange (with the former) and raspberry (with the latter), which were deliciously tart and really complemented the sweet dishes. I’m sure there’ll be lots of tweaking and refining of the menu over the coming weeks but on this evidence they’d be best leaving well alone, we couldn’t fault a thing. Horizons broadened RACHEL MARTING EXPLORES THE DIVERSE GASTRONOMIC REGIONS OF THE MIDDLE KINGDOM AT THIS NEWLY-OPENED RESTAURANT. have to be honest; I don’t normally venture to the village of Wales on a weeknight and it isn’t my first thought when trying to work out an area to go for dinner. However, I, like other avid foodies, found myself wandering down School Road at dusk on a wet Tuesday in January. Why? To try out Asia Palace, with its menu of innovative dishes from all regions of China’s culinary landscape. The extensive menu is full of recognisable classics like sweet and sour, crispy duck and spring rolls, while also offering some more traditional dishes, such as stir-fried scallops with ginger and spring onion and steamed Siu Lung bao. Guided by our waiter and owner, Ting (who was incredibly informed about the dishes and what flavours and amounts to expect), we started with the mixed Hors D’oeuvres, which is a tantalising selection of sesame prawn toast, spare ribs, crispy seaweed, spring rolls, chicken satay skewers and deep-fried won tons. Everything is perfectly crisp, sweet, savoury and spicy in exactly the right places and it’s a lesson in how really good Chinese food should taste. Asia Palace is renowned for its dim

sum, so a basket of steamed Siu Mai was a natural progression, along with one of my personal favourites, pan-fried Wor Tip: delicious pork dumplings with a beautiful crust and meltingly soft meat inside, served with tangy ginger vinegar for dipping. Spiked with gorgeously oily garlic bobbing around for added crunch, a dramatic plate of sizzling fillet steak was showstopping to the eyes and complex on the tongue, deeply marinated and unashamedly fiery. Bowls of fluffy egg fried rice and superbly light prawn crackers both acting as a vehicle and cooling agent for the punchy sauce and complementing the richness of the chillidoused beef. However, the standout dish has to be the aromatic duck. The tender mahogany meat lip-smackingly crisp and yet still melt-in-the-mouth, served with the usual suspects; delicately thin pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and plum sauce on the side. The combination of such a variety of traditional dishes combined with lusciously roasted meats and silky Sui Mai puts Asia Palace on the ‘must try’ restaurant list and if you’re gathering a

crowd, the decidedly no-frills sharing ethos (there’s page after page of plates and platters to choose from, ranging from Cantonese specialities to regional Southeast Asian dishes) makes for an exploration of the diverse gastronomic regions of the Middle Kingdom. We’ve a feeling it’s going to be tough going back to local takeaways after this. The food at Asia Palace is not just delicious but great value for money. New for 2020, the traditional Cantonese three-course set banquet will be priced at £9.90 per head from Sunday to Thursday and includes mixed Hors D’oeuvres, aromatic crispy duck, beef with green pepper in black bean sauce, fruity sweet and sour pork, sea spice chicken and egg fried rice. MOTORING

THIS MONTH’S MOTORING OFFERINGS HAVE REAL PRESENCE, BOTH ON AND OFF-ROAD, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Style icon The SUV designed to look and feel like a sports car – that is the DBX’s philosophy. The DBX is Aston Martin’s first attempt in the SUV market and they have done a very good job. Unlike other high-performance SUV cars, the DBX is built on its own platform that isn’t shared giving it a unique USP in this competitive segment. Powered by a 542hp 4.0-litre twinturbo V8, the DBX can accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and go all the way to a top speed of 181mph. The speed isn’t the DBX’s party trick though, its typical Aston Martin interior is exquisite and the exterior looks are to die for. The DBX really is a car for the style icons. A true Aston Martin.

First in the Q For the first time in the company’s history, their flagship RS badge has been placed on one of Audi’s full-sized SUV models. Welcome the RS Q8. Powered by a 4.0-litre biturbo V8, this 592hp powerhouse will accelerate to 62mph in 3.8 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. The RS Q8 comes with features such as RS-specific adaptive air suspension, all-wheel steering, sport differential and active roll stabilisation. Carbon Black and Vorsprung versions will release later on which Audi say will unleash the sporty potential of the car even more. With the sleek coupe profile of the Q8 combining with the aggressive details of the RS design elements, the RS Q8 certainly stands out on the road. Orders open at the start of 2020.

Dubbed the S-Class of the SUV world, the GLS is certainly an SUV with a fantastic reputation. Now though, to add some spice to your post-Christmas and new year blues, Mercedes have given this SUV the full AMG treatment. Say hello to the AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+. Powered by the same 612hp 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine as in the brand’s flagship AMG-GTR supercar along with a small 16KW (22hp) electrical assistance at low speeds, this car is, say Mercedes, “a vehicle to those customers who are not willing to accept compromises when it comes to versatility, effortless superiority and spaciousness”. 0-62mph takes 4.2 seconds and combined with an all-wheel drive system, this is the perfect weapon for the winter.

The Forester is the bestselling Subaru model in the UK, so it’s no surprise that the Japanese brand has built an all-new variation of its most popular car. Called the Forester E-Boxer, it’ll be powered by a completely new powertrain with a 2.0-litre Boxer petrol engine combined with an electric motor and transferred to the road through a symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. New technology ensures the Forester is as safe as it’s ever been thanks to EyeSight driver assist technology, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection, Reverse Automatic Braking, and Driver Monitoring System. All this comes as standard. The Forester can drive in full electric mode of speeds up to 25mph and overall fuel economy has increased by ten per cent. Priced from £33,995.
