SS Flooring

The right fit Layers Flooring’s flexible client approach – and competitive prices – sets them apart from the big chains, writes Stephanie Burns. ales are everywhere and there are huge discounts to be had. But have you ever pondered over a price that you think may be too good to be true? Well, the chances are, it probably is. At Layers Flooring in Dronfield, ‘sale time’ is approached in a totally different manner. Unlike many of their competitors within the industry, the local, independent company promises to only deliver genuine reductions, which are granted to them periodically by the manufacturers. Certain large carpet outlets are notorious for hiking the prices to three times the real value, only to reduce them dramatically to suggest huge savings. Quite often you will find these same products in independent stores such as Layers at lower than their competitors’ sale prices all year round. Helpful, impartial advice is always on hand

S

from the team of expert staff at Layers and they allow you to browse at your leisure rather than jumping on you with pushy sales tactics. This philosophy extends to every arm of the business and there are no sales gimmicks designed to make you ‘buy now think later’. Layers supply and fit carpets, vinyl, wood and laminates from the country’s leading manufacturers in a range of colours and styles. Even when on a tight budget, Layers will always provide value for money ensuring you get the best quality for the amount you can afford. Customers are at the heart of the business and much of the work Layers carry out is based on word-of-mouth recommendations and repeat business. Since first opening the doors of their Crosspool branch over a decade ago, Layers have built a loyal following of customers, going from strength to strength and welcoming a sister branch, which opened in Dronfield six years ago. Layers offer many additional services including moving and replacing heavy furniture, uplifting and disposing of any existing floor coverings, and trimming and re-

fixing doors, kitchen plinths and new skirting boards. Their joiners can also attend to squeaky floorboards that have been a bugbear for so long. As a standard, Layers also offer free, no obligation quotes and a free sample loan service. If you’re elderly, housebound or simply find it difficult getting to the shop within working hours, they are happy to visit your home and bring lots of samples for you to consider; even out of hours. It’s a flexible approach to suit you and your lifestyle. If you’re on the lookout for new flooring, be sure to visit Layers Flooring, where you’ll find genuine discounts on already-competitive prices. Fitbit charge HR wireless activity & sleep tracker £119.95, from John Lewis

New year, new you From stylish technology to the latest superfoods, make sure you’re well-quipped to make your 2016 resolutions last. By Molly McGreevy and Phoebe Seymour. New Year means a new start so many of us vow to be fitter and healthier when January rolls around. But as good as our intentions to eat better and work out more are, we start to lose our way come February. One of the reasons our resolutions fall apart is that health and fitness, like much of modern life, has become a confusing and sometimes overwhelming world. There is a new superfood every week, a different fashionable fitness class being offered each time you enter the gym and at least three news stories a week telling us the latest foods we shouldn’t be eating for fear of causing illness. Here are a couple of ways to stay on track and not get distracted by the health and fitness hype this January.

A

Get tech fit Wearable fitness technology offers a contemporary solution to the baffling world

SOUTHSIDE 12

of keeping fit and healthy, by recording everything, from what you eat for breakfast to how you sleep at night, and every hop, skip and jump in between. Fitness trackers are usually worn around your wrist, and connect to an app on your phone. The most basic count your steps then tell you how many calories you’ve burned, whilst higher end trackers can monitor your heart rate, how you sleep and track runs and cycles. Phone apps can be used to enter the calories you’re eating, and use the information you enter to tell you if you’re missing any crucial nutrients from your diet. Most fitness trackers are designed to be sleek and stylish, as opposed to the ugly and cumbersome pedometers that are the technology’s closest predecessor. Some look more like watches, with a display face and chunky strap, whilst others are thinner and more discreet. Users shouldn’t be deceived by their fashionable design though, many fitness trackers are prepared for all the elements

and can withstand everyday use, and some can be used in water so swimmers can track their activities. There is a whole host of free apps available for wearable fitness technology. Some devices have an app specifically tailored to them, and only users of the technology have access to the app. However, there is still a huge choice of fitness apps to choose from. Sports brand Adidas has created miCoach, an app which turns your phone into a personal trainer. miCoach offers free diet and training plans, motivates you as you exercise, and connects with your wearable to build a detailed picture of your health fitness regime. With so many free apps available, and wearable fitness trackers becoming easier to use and more fashionable to wear, keeping fit and healthy has never been as stylish as it will be in 2016. As ever, the tough part comes from within. If you don’t have the willpower to change your lifestyle, all those gadgets won’t count for much.

Read what you eat We are constantly hearing contradictory information about the food and drinks we consume. One day we’re told coffee is bad for our stress levels, the next we are told it is a great antioxidant. Who should we believe? Which foods should we eat more of? And which should we cut out altogether? The best way to get around this problem is to educate ourselves with reliable information straight from the nutritionists’ mouths. Reading the back of food packaging can be baffling, so a great book to start with is E for Additives by Maurice Hanssen. This best-selling and award-winning E number book helps you understand the lists of additives that appear on food packets, so you can see exactly what has been added, where it comes from, why it has been added, and what it might do to you. The Reader’s Digest Foods that Heal, Foods that Harm is another fantastic read that draws on the experience of over 300 experts. This A-Z provides information about diet and health, vitamins and supplements, additives and allergies, and tells you which foods can help combat particular ailments. If you are looking for a health plan to fit you, The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford has easy-to-follow questionnaires and a simple step-by-step plan telling you

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

15:09

Page 2

what nutrients you need to live a healthier, happier life. Accompany this with The Optimum Nutrition Cookbook co-written by Judy Ridgway, which is bursting with inspirational meal ideas. Who says healthy food has to be boring? So forget about fad diet books, if you really want to rid yourself of those extra pounds and have a healthier life this year and beyond, you’ll need a timeless nutrition ‘bible’ that never goes out of style.

Superfoods Gluten-free banana flour has a quarter of the calories of normal flour, and is packed with potassium and fibre that keeps you fuller for longer. And it’s not just cakes and bakes that the new superfood can be used in. Despite its name, banana flour doesn’t take the flavour of the fruit it originates from and recipes include pastas, smoothies, and pizzas. Plus, if you make your own baby food, banana flour is a great healthy alternative for the little ones too. As well as being great for you, using banana flour in your food helps to prevent food waste, as it is made from bananas that would otherwise be destined for the bin. Bananas that are too lumpy or bumpy for the supermarket shelves are peeled, cut and dried before being crushed into flour. So not only is banana flour healthy and delicious, but ethical too. If baking isn’t your thing, and you prefer savoury comfort foods during the winter months, bone broth is looking to make a comeback in 2016. Despite traditionally seen as being a Grandmother’s flu remedy, broth is the latest health trend foodies are getting excited about. Cheap, easy to make and full of essential nutrients bone broth is set to be on every fashionista’s dinner table in the next year. The health benefits of bone broth are undeniable. Broth is full of protein and gelatine, aids digestion and gives your skin and hair a healthy glow. Unlike other superfoods broth isn’t expensive or difficult to make. Busy all day? Your broth will cook in the slow cooker whilst you’re at work and be ready for your return. The longer you cook your broth, the more nutritious it will become as the slow, low heat process allows for the release of proteins and minerals. In 2016, bone broth is predicted to take over from smoothies from as the most fashionable on-the-go superfood, with commuters swapping their fruity morning beverage for the latest savoury, warm superfood.

SS January Sales

Words: Stephanie Burns

How to shop the January Everything you need to know about bagging a bargain or two in the New Year shopping frenzy. or bargain hunters, January is the very best time of year. Walking into your favourite shop to see so many discounts and special offers can be even more exciting than Christmas Day. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.

F

Set your priorities Before you set off, or go online, make a no-negotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you.

Stock up on new-season trends Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the summer sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on this summer’s key looks before you head out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come. Spring/summer 2016’s key styles are ruffles, mirror shines and bold stripes, so if you spy any pieces related to these themes, grab them before somebody else does.

Time it right Go either super early (as in online on Christmas Day) or at the very last minute. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of January.

15:32

Page 2

Check the return policy January discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like everything.

Do your research The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store.

Set a budget

Invest wisely

It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50-per-cent-off ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Keep a budget in mind and stick to it.

Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time. And really, what’s Christmas money for anyway?

Deck next year’s halls Unless you’re so super trendy that only the current season’s Christmas decorations will do, now is the time to buy anything festive-themed. From crackers to napkins, cards to baubles, shops will be desperate to get rid of whatever they didn’t sell before Christmas so there should be huge reductions.

Start your 2016 Christmas shopping now!

There is significant risk with this, so don’t say we didn’t warn you. And don’t even think about second-guessing what your kids might want next Christmas. But for the more reliable gifts of a tie and socks for your dad or slippers for your grandparents, this is the perfect opportunity to save on the classics.

Although it has an art deco design, this occasional table certainly has a hint of seventies style mixed in. £347 from www.sweetpeaandwillow.com

Glitz & glamour Take inspiration from a decade famed for its bold and brash colours and patterns, writes Phoebe Seymour. ast year’s fashion world was dominated by 1970s style with flares and paisley filling high street stores and its influence slowly crept into our home

L

décor too. Metallics were another major trend for 2015, with copper accessories taking precedence in the home. This year, interior designers are tipping 1970s-inspired gold as the next big bling. Make a gold item or piece of furniture

the centre of attention or mix your metallics by combining mid-century modern brass or 1950s-inspired iron with glamorous gold accessories. Quality and care Create the right first impression with a bespoke kitchen from expert craftsmen, David J Martin.

any of us love nothing more than welcoming family and friends into our homes to share a delicious feast. But when our kitchens are tired and dated, or there simply isn’t enough space to put things, the blissful idea of cooking up a storm for your favourite people can suddenly become a chaotic nightmare. If you have ever been stood in the middle of your kitchen holding a burning-hot tray searching for available worktop space, or know the frustration of juggling baking dishes in and out of a too-small oven, it’s time for a revamp. Creating a bespoke kitchen is the ideal way to ensure each element is designed to suit your specific requirements and, at David J Martin, on Springvale Road in Sheffield, you can do just that. The experienced and friendly staff at David J Martin can help you realise your kitchen’s potential and David and his team of expert craftsmen will plan, design and build your perfect kitchen using the wood and finish of your choice. There are so many advantages to having

M

furniture made to your exact specifications; bespoke units can help to utilise all available space, making your kitchen easier to enjoy. Whether you require additional worktop space for food preparation or clever storage solutions like deep drawers and pullout shelves, David and his team can plan every component for you. If you simply want to change the appearance of your kitchen, updating the worktops and doors of existing units is the perfect way to dramatically transform a look, without the upheaval or expense of having a whole new kitchen fitted. Contemporary styles are as popular as ever and David now has a new design for handleless doors. With a concealed component on the top of the door, which is built in as part of the detail, they are ideal for creating clean lines and a minimalist feel. The company has built a fantastic reputation for providing quality, bespoke products with a consistent attention to detail. “We are not held to ransom by massproduced products as we make everything from scratch,” David says. “We even make our own cutters for producing mouldings, which means you can add to your kitchen in

years to come and we will still be able to match the designs.” As well as providing excellent products and kitchens, the company is highly regarded for its great customer and after-sales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, they will help to put them right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It is a truly caring approach and, with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it is clearly a successful one. For more information, or to see what is on offer, call 0114 268 6718 or check out the website www.david-j-martin.co.uk. SS Male Essentials Photography: Aston Martin/Rouge Events

For your eyes only Adam Kay unleashes his inner James Bond by jumping behind the wheel of the latest Aston Martin to mark the release of SPECTRE. am in an Aston Martin DB9 GT at top speed, burning rubber, pedal to the metal. Beneath my three-piece suit, my heart is pounding. An evil henchman sits beside me, gun trained at my temple. In hot pursuit, a fleet of hired goons, tyres screeching as they race to close me down. I glance at the hidden button that triggers the rear machine guns; one touch would blow the enemy to dust. I hover my finger over it, waiting for the right moment, hovering, hovering… Alright, alright. No I don’t. No I’m not. I am in an Aston Martin DB9 GT; that much is true. But not in a heart-stopping, nerve-shredding, high-speed chase. Actually, I am somewhere off the A6110 just outside Leeds – and I am stuck behind a tractor. I am wearing my best three-piece suit, yes – but it’s high street, not Savile Row. The evil henchman at my side is in fact a very nice

man from Aston Martin called Richard. (And he’s unarmed. Well, as far as I know.) And the cars behind me are not driven by hired goons; more likely they’re retirees on their way back home from Lidl. I am here, behind the wheel of this great machine, as part of an event celebrating the latest James Bond film, SPECTRE. But as you’ve probably gathered, I’m making the most of the opportunity by indulging in a little wish-fulfilment. As a kid, 007 was my hero. While peers chased footballs round a field and idolised Ronaldo (the one with the teeth, not the one with the abs), I was dreaming of being Bond. Sean Connery’s effortless sophistication, Timothy Dalton’s anguish and grit, Roger Moore’s eyebrow acrobatics – I loved ‘em all. I think my favourite ever Christmas present was the waistcoat and bow tie set which became my unofficial spy uniform. All of which explains why now, sat in the driver’s seat of an Aston Martin – AN ASTON MARTIN! JAMES BOND’S CAR! – I am having a bit of a moment. Later this evening, at Aston Martin Leeds, is the main event. The car dealership is filled with Aston Martins identical to those seen in Bond films through the years. Oh! There’s a DBS like Bond’s wedding car in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service! Ah! That’s a V12 Vanquish, like the ‘invisible’ car from Die Another Day! Nfgh! That’s a silver DB5, the Goldfinger car! Over here, the pièce de résistance: an Aston Martin DB10. In celebration of the manufacturer’s long association with the Bond franchise, this new model was created especially for SPECTRE; only ten will ever be made, eight of these used as stunt cars in the movie itself. And unlike the other replica vehicles on display tonight, this one is the real deal – one of those eight seen onscreen. After attendees have mingled and been suitably refreshed (yes, the bar is serving vodka martinis; yes, I do partake; I must report they are stirred, not shaken), the evening’s guest speaker takes to the stage: rally champion and stunt driver Mark Higgins. Mark is arguably more Bond than Daniel Craig. That car chase through Rome in SPECTRE? That’s Mark with his foot to the floor, not Daniel. Any driver’s dream job – but, says Mark, not without its challenges. “We spent one month in Rome, the whole of March, shooting a sequence that ended up making about two minutes of screen time in the final film,” Mark says, “And there are 350 film crew, 16 security people, 150 extras on location – about 1,000 people there in total, all for this two-car chase. So the pressure to get it right is pretty immense.” A professional driver from the age of 17, Isle of Man native Mark has won the British Rally Championship three times. His

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

15:52

appearances on camera are another arrow in his quiver; his stunt CV includes work on Top Gear with Ben Collins, aka The Stig. He began his association with Bond on the second Daniel Craig film, Quantum of Solace, and together with his team won an award for stunt work on its follow-up, Skyfall. But as well as being Bond, Mark’s work on the films throws up some other surreal moments as well… “I spent most of Skyfall dressed up as the actress who plays Moneypenny, Naomie Harris – hair, make-up, everything,” Mark laughs. “Once she came in to the dressing room as I was being put into costume – that was a weird day!” Whatever the outfit – dinner jacket or drag – it’s fair to say Mark’s position as 007 stunt driver is safe. Cut back to me in the Aston Martin DB9 GT, tootling along behind the tractor. Despite my love of Bond, I do not share my fictional idol’s skill with or knowledge of cars. For the petrolheads, here are the vital statistics about the one I’m currently driving. 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine. Touchtronic II sixspeed transmission with electronic shift-bywire control system. Zero to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. No? Me neither. All I know is it goes fast, and looks gorgeous while it’s doing it. This particular model of Aston Martin is the latest version of the DB9 – the one

before the SPECTRE car – and will set you back some £140,000. But that weighty price tag gets you a vehicle truly worthy of a secret agent. Little wonder that Bond has such a strong and lengthy connection with Aston Martin: both are quintessentially British and the very definition of style. The DB9 GT even has a gadget or two. Before we set off, Richard, the nice man from Aston Martin who is contractually obligated to ride along with me to make sure I don’t die (or worse, put a dent in the Aston), shows me the controls. He touches a button – and on either side of the dashboard, up pop two Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers. Not quite hidden machine guns, but still pretty cool. Later, as we pull onto the motorway to head back to the garage, Richard presses another button that switches the DB9 into ‘Sport’ mode. The exhaust lets out a leonine roar and our heads hit the seats as the car thrusts forward, all speed and fury. And though I know I have to hand the keys back soon and that my nostalgic trip is almost over, in that moment I am Bond again. I look in the rear view mirror at the hired goons giving chase. My finger pauses over the trigger, hovering, hovering… JCT 600 Aston Martin Leeds Ring Road, Lower Wortley, LS12 6AA Tel: 0844 844 3108 www.jct600.co.uk

watched cautiously, suspended in silence, as the newborn calf attempted to wobble to its feet for the very first time. Body quivering, eyes wide and legs bent into dangerous angles that only the youngest of bones can reach. On this occasion though, it wasn’t meant to be; gravity one, calf nil. The scene before me wouldn’t have been out of place on a James Herriot set, but far from the flower-rich hay meadows of the Yorkshire Dales, I was in the dehesa (grasslands) of Extremadura – a western part of Spain that borders Andalusia to the south, and Portugal to the west – surrounded by acres of olive and acorn trees, on an Iberian pig farm. Extremadura is nationally and internationally renowned for its jamón ibérico (Iberian ham) and I’d had my first taste of this delicacy the previous evening, in the tranquil surroundings of the Hacienda Arroyo La Plata hotel. Sat on the restaurant terrace with a glass of red from the nearby Ribera del Guadiana region I watched the rich orange sun sink beneath the banks of the River Ardilai. Perhaps my judgement was swayed by the idyllic setting, but this was by

far the best ham I’d ever tasted. As we explored the rustic fields of La Roma pig farm in a tour-guide-driven 4x4, we learned the secret to really great jamón lies in diet and exercise: the more acorns and walking, the better. The safaris, run by GeoActiva, show every part of the jamón process and so, after meeting farmer Felipe, it was off to the slaughter house and drying rooms just down the road. Here, the jamón is cured in huge rooms filled with salt, dried in several other rooms and finally, sweated in a natural cave. This painstaking process can take up to four years, but the result is definitely worth the effort. It’s not just the preparation of the ham that is important either, but also the way in which it’s cut. Master cutters spend years practising their delicate craft, because the thickness actually affects the taste – the thinner the better. I was lucky enough to not only sample jamón sliced by a master cutter, but also have a go myself. It turned out I was far better at eating than slicing. Cuisine in Extremadura stretches far beyond just jamón though, and there’s no better way to explore what’s on offer than with a guided gastro tour of Cáceres. This

historic hub is a charming old-fashioned Spanish city where you are still offered a pincho (a small snack) with every drink. It’s a wonder how – with its gorgeous old town, art galleries, museums, bars, restaurants and World of Music, Arts and Dance festival – it has remained relatively under the radar. But in 2015, it was elected as Spain’s gastronomy capital, and this hidden gem was exposed in all its glory. We met José from L&P Travel in the bustling old town and he took us to three bars and restaurants throughout the evening. Each offered something entirely different, from the busy open kitchen of Restaurante Cayena, to the modern Mastro Piero Gastro Bar, and – my favourite – the more traditional

and almost cavernous cove of Tapería Calenda. Here, we were treated to delicious pork cheek ravioli on mushroom soil, Iberian ham with pea sauce and puff pastry and a wonderful take on miniature fish and chips served on miso sauce with figs – all matched with the finest wines of the region. If you don’t have the luxury of time to spend a few days seeking out your favourite restaurants, a bespoke gastro tour with L&P Travel is the ideal way sample to the best that Cáceres has to offer. It’s worth mentioning this company also arrange tailor-made holidays and trips, so whether it’s sport, food, nature, or action adventure you’re after, they can arrange absolutely everything for you. As well as cuisine, Extremadura is also renowned for its rich history, and marks left by Roman, Arab and Jewish civilizations, among others, can be seen throughout. Our fantastic tour guide, Marco Mangut, was on hand in each of the cities and towns we visited to explain all about their past. In Jerez de los Caballeros – most famous for its links to the Knights Templar – there are many Templar and Moorish artefacts; the old town is surrounded by a Moorish wall and the skyline is sprinkled with towers, buildings and churches. Further north, Mérida is home to many spectacular historical structures including a Roman amphitheatre, which dates back to 8BC. Here, crowds of up to 14,000 would come to watch gladiators fight to the death against wild beasts and, although only ruins remain, there’s no denying the majestic ambience. The neighbouring theatre, with its impressive marble pillars, 6,000 capacity semi-circle seating area, and performance stage, has become the most emblematic monument in the city. In the summer – when the stifling heat has subsided – concerts are hosted here, and audiences get to relive a piece of history in the grandstands. It was here in Mérida that I got my first

A tapas lunch in the beautiful courtyard of Trujillo’s Parador provided the perfect opportunity for reflection. Even after a jampacked four days I felt I had barely scratched the surface of this charming region so rich with nature, history and culture. I sat back in my chair and basked in the warming winter sunshine, my mind busy with thoughts of delicious wine, jamón and the rustic hills of the dehesa.

lavish buffet breakfast at NH Palacio de Oquendo Hotel, we headed east towards Trujillo. Despite being one of Extremadura’s most visited cities it hasn’t lost any of its oldworldy charm. In the distance, views of the castle wall ruins are simply stunning and exploring the winding cobbled streets and various museums is the ideal way to while away a day or two.

From refreshed favourites to brand new models, Jordan Cutforth takes a look at what’s new in the motoring world.

Citroen gives refined DS4 a facelift The DS brand is to Citroen what Lexus is to Toyota. It’s the plusher, more upmarket side of the company aimed squarely at those wanting a more luxurious and sophisticated driving experience. Back in 2011 Citroen launched the DS4 – a C4 with added style and a higher price tag to match – now in 2015 they’ve refreshed the ageing line-up with a midlife face-lift with under the skin tweaks making the DS4 more refined and more technologically advanced. Powering the DS4 is a selection of six engines. – three petrol and three diesel. Depending on the engine chosen, the DS4 can manage 74.3mpg and just 100g/km of CO2. There’s a new 208hp petrol unit exclusive for the DS4 too. Prices start from £19,495 or £21,745 for the Crossback.

Seat turns up the heat on the Cupra “What!” I hear you say. “How is this a new Ibiza Cupra? Nothing has changed”. On face value you’d be correct. Aesthetically it’s pretty much identical to the previous model, but delve a little deeper and the changes are easily apparent. The main difference with this new Cupra is the engine. Gone is the 1.4-litre twin-charged unit and in comes the same 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged engine found in the Polo GTI, which produces 189bhp and 236lb ft of torque. Not only is it more powerful and more efficient than the previous model, but driving enthusiasts will be overjoyed by the fact the Cupra only comes with a sixspeed manual transmission. Other changes include a more upmarket interior and various driver safety tech. On sale in January 2016.

engines, a 3.0-litre V6 diesel (named 350d) and a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 (named GLS 63). The diesel has 258hp and 457lb ft of torque at its disposal whilst only emitting 199g/km of CO2. The V8 on the other hand makes 585hp and 561 lb ft of torque. Great

to entertain the kids. Bad for the longevity of your licence. Inside is as luxurious as you’d ever want a car to be and it comes with all the latest safety kit. Prices start from £69,100.

SS Chesterfield Champions

A new year brings new opportunities, writes Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield. appy New Year to all readers! Well it’s the new year but certainly not a new start for Chesterfield. Developments are now well underway and we will be making a lot of significant progression in 2016, we have so much to look forward to. There is a confident buzz about the town and this year we are going to hit the ground running. Big changes are afoot, not only for Chesterfield but for Sheffield City Region which the town is a part of. Devolution is the hot topic on everyone’s mind and from my own perspective, it would greatly benefit Chesterfield and the region because it will give the town a seat at a more influential ‘local’ table, not to mention more control over our own financial affairs. It could also help bring potential funding to the area further boosting our ambitious plans for growth and development in the area over the next ten years. Ultimately, devolution will allow us to have more money and decision-making powers as well as greater control over skills and transport

H

improvements, job creation and increase the number of new businesses. We want to be able to have more control over things that we want for our town and cities in this area and for decisions to be made locally rather than in London. I would urge all local businesses to take part in the consultation. Chesterfield’s position within Sheffield City Region means we do a lot of business with neighbouring towns and cities and it is important that we have control of the direction of our future. 2016 will see greater investment into the region and investment equals job creation and opportunities for young people living and studying here in Chesterfield. This year will see the grand opening of St Helena’s in Chesterfield, the new University of Derby Campus. The first academic cohort will be based at the campus in September 2016, the degrees on offer will include: Adult Nursing, Business, Computing, Law, and Engineering, which is a town specialism and one celebrated every year through Made Festival in Chesterfield. This is a big year for the town and the UK as Blood Hound, which appeared at

Made Festival, will be attempting the land speed record. How is this relevant to Chesterfield I hear you ask? Well a local industrial weighing specialists, Weightron Bilanciai Ltd, have supplied the weighing systems that have been used throughout the build of the project. So, when you see Blood Hound on the flats of South Africa, be proud in the knowledge it carries a little bit of Chesterfield and is helping spread our reputation for quality manufacturing all over the world. With all that and more, what a great year we have ahead of us! I hope you will join me in celebrating and recognising our achievements on Thursday 17 March at the Winding Wheel at the Celebrate Chesterfield 2016 event.
