Just the word can stir up so many feelings in people. Aren’t they hard to grow? Don’t you have to lift them over the winter? What about slugs? For many of you, I expect they’re a sort of Marmite plant – you either love them or hate them. Well guess what? At Millthorpe Nursery, we love them!

Garish colours, exuberant foliage and flowers that demand to be looked at.

Dahlias are all of these and more. They bring cheerfulness and smiles to the garden and snub their noses at good taste. Reds, purples, yellows, whites, pinks, orange, magenta and mauve – dahlias make no claims to subtlety. You won’t get a blue dahlia (although some try very hard) but think of any other colour and there will be a dahlia for you.

We hand-select our dahlias from a specialist grower on the edge of Hadrian’s Wall. A visit to their dahlia fields (and yes, I mean fields) in September or October is an amazingly colourful visual feast.

Having started flowering their socks off in the early summer, dahlias are still firing on all cylinders at the back end of the year and only stop when the first frosts hit. As value for money, there’s nothing that can beat them.

And as I write this, our dahlia rooted cuttings arrived today. Summer is well and truly here. Tomorrow they’ll be potted into one litre pots to root out further before being moved to three litre pots for sale. It’s always amazing to think that today’s small cutting will be summer’s magnificent colour statement.

Back in April 2016, in another place and living another life, Deirdre and I decided to visit a dahlia nursery near Southampton. It was a lovely spring day, the sky was blue and we chatted with the staff for ages about what they did. On the way back up the M3, Deirdre asked, “So, how do you buy a nursery then?”

A couple of miles and a Google later we’d found a couple of opportunities and – one week later – were pulling in to the car park at Millthorpe to view the nursery for the first time.

The rest, as they say, is history…

NEW OWNERS OF THE GLEN PRIVATE NURSING HOME ARE COMMITTED TO KEEPING THE FAMILY-RUN ETHOS. he Glen Private Nursing Home on Abbeydale Road South, Dore is a well-established and respected part of the community having been owned and managed by Sally and Tony Williams since 1994. But now 2018 brings a new era for the home, as assistant matron, Kathryn Ferris and her family become the new owners.

After 24 years of successfully building the reputation of the home, the previous owners are moving on to new ventures. In their time at the home, Sally and Tony have extended the property twice to increase the number of rooms to 17 to continue to provide the kind of personal, friendly and welcoming environment a small home can.

Kathryn started work at The Glen 15 years ago, after completing her A levels, in order to gain relevant work experience to support her application to study nursing at Sheffield University. She continued to work there as a carer during her studies and on qualifying, worked at the Northern General, as well as doing a couple of shifts a week at The Glen.

a full-time nursing sister, for which Kathryn applied. The Glen is a home from home for Kathryn and four years ago, she joined the management team as assistant matron, alongside matron, Christine Johnson.

When the opportunity arose, Kathryn persuaded her family to buy the The Glen.

The company comprises five shareholder/directors: Kathryn, her brother Neil, mum Beverley, step-dad John and father Richard. All live locally and intend to continue to promote the family-run ethos of The Glen.

Although the ownership of the business changed hands on 1 May 2018, it will be “business as usual” with all the staff

remaining at the home and the day-to-day management being the responsibility of Christine and Kathryn.

Sally and Tony are leaving on a high, having had an unannounced CQC inspection in April and receiving a glowing report, achieving a rating of ‘good’ in all categories (safe, effective, caring, responsive and wellled). The report said, “We saw in all cases, people were cared for by staff that were kind, patient and respectful.”

SET SAIL FOR THIS YEAR’S CHESTERFIELD CANAL FESTIVAL, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN.

ALL ABOARD here will be celebrations all round at the annual Chesterfield Canal Festival, which takes place on 30 June and 1 July at Staveley Town Basin.

Featuring an array of events, displays and try-out sessions, the two-day affair will offer fun for all the family, including demonstrations of water rescues by dogs from the Northern Newfoundland Club and a flypast by a Lancaster and Dakota.

And that’s not all. Visitors will be dazzled by musical, dance and street theatre performances in the events marquee and outside the lock; walk on water in zorbs provided by the Pleasley Vale Canoe and Activity Club; explore the history of the Chesterfield Canal by boot or boat with a variety of canal societies; set sail through Staveley Town Lock and the newlybuilt Hartington Harbour on one of four trip boats; take a turn in a canoe; party the day away with Morris dancers and a brass band; or take a peek at the birds of prey, vintage vehicles, Urban Gypsies crafts, canalware,

For the little ones, entertainment will include fairground rides, a mini-digger – courtesy of JCB T.C. Harrison and the Waterway Recovery Group, archery, a climbing tower, radio controlled boats, face painting and an opportunity to come up close and personal with a skunk, courtesy of Encounter Exotics.

And for those looking to refuel during the festivities, there’ll be an array of sweet and savoury treats on offer, from home-made cakes and coffee to a real ale bar run by Brampton Brewery.

Another highlight of the festival will be the two concerts held on both the Friday and Saturday evening, starting at 7.30pm. Friday will see the return of the ever-popular Swing Commanders – if it swings, they can, and will play it – whilst Saturday will bring to the stage Some Antics, Judy Dunlop and Jon Scaife – a beautiful voice tastefully accompanied. The celebrations don’t end there, as on 2 July a flotilla of all four trip boats will set sail on a ten-mile expedition of ten locks, from Staveley Basin to Tapton and back, with stops both ways at Hollingwood Hub and Tapton Lock. Tickets are £10 or £5 one way. Call 07925 851569 to book.

The Way of the Roses Coast to Coast is a popular route covering 170 miles between Morecambe and Bridlington, passing through the historic cities of York and Lancaster. It’s a challenging but rewarding adventure which will take place in aid of Weston Park Cancer Charity between 14-17 September and is organised by local cycling tour specialists, Velo. cartel.

The Way of the Roses tour takes place over three days, averaging 53 miles a day.

Weston Park Cancer Charity relies on incredible people like you to help in the fight against cancer and they need your support now more than ever. And all the money you raise will be spent improving the lives of local cancer patients and their families.
