First choice flooring Professional service from beginning to end is the secret of success for Layers, according to their happy customers.
W
ith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and t otally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely
happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours.
“He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

THE SECRET TO A BEAUTIFUL LAWN Now summer is here our thoughts turn to the garden and our lawns in particular.
I
s your lawn looking as green, healthy and weed free as it should be? If the grass is lacklustre, perhaps with unsightly bare patches or clumps of weeds or moss, then the chances are your lawn needs some TLC. But if the idea of going to the DIY store, buying preparations and spending precious time over the weekend putting down feed-and-weed products on your lawn does not appeal, then help is at hand. GreenThumb are lawn care experts who will keep your lawn looking healthy and green for less than it would cost you to do the job yourself. These pictures – taken just weeks apart – show how in only a short time a patchy lawn can be transformed into a lush, green sward with no weeds. GreenThumb’s value-for-money lawn treatments start at just £16 for a small garden and the average treatment is only £22.
They can also help your lawn stay greener during hot summers, tackle pests or diseases that attack grass and give your grass the best chance of avoiding moss in the winter. Why not call GreenThumb for a free lawn inspection and then sit back and enjoy ‘all your hard work’… Sheffield: 0114 276 0101 sheffield@greenthumb.co.uk

When Jenna and Mark wanted to put the finishing touches to the transformation of their home they turned to the experts at Dronfield Carpets & Floors.
Rising to the challenge
B
uying a run-down property, fixing it up and making it your own can be an exciting and inspiring prospect for those who relish a challenge. Jenna and Mark O’Reilly saw the potential in their home from the start and over the last couple of years they have been hard at work transforming the three-bedroom house in Grenoside into a gorgeous family home. Massive building work was undertaken to transform the kitchen, living and dining rooms into a light, open-plan living space, as well as opening up the stairs and building an extension to accommodate a utility room and downstairs toilet. An ambitious loft conversion is now home to a stunning master bedroom and en suite and a new conservatory has created a welcoming family space with views of the recently landscaped gardens. “It was a big project but we’ve finally finished and are thrilled with the results,” says Jenna. “We discovered some surprises along the way, like unearthing the old-fashioned brick
fireplace in the living room. We knew from the beginning that the house had potential and the results have lived up to our expectations.” The O’Reilly’s home has a traditional feel, which is enhanced by wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork, cosy furniture and antique brass stair rods. The final touches to the house have now been completed and Jenna and Mark chose Dronfield Carpets & Floors to lay the new flooring in their conservatory, stairs and landing. After their services were recommended by a friend, owner Tom Straw and his team fitted vinyl tiles in the conservatory and new underlay and striped carpet up the stairs. “We shopped around and compared prices of a few different showrooms and it was clear that Dronfield Carpets & Floors offered the best value for money and service. It must have only taken them a few hours to complete all the work and we felt completely comfortable with them in our home.” Jenna and Mark selected Karndean vinyl tiles for the conservatory, in a rustic

terracotta colour that adds warmth to the room. “We have Karndean in the living room, so that was an obvious choice as we wanted continuity throughout the ground floor of the house. You can really tell the difference too, due to its high quality and realistic finish.” For the two flights of stairs and landing areas, they chose a Lifestyle Cheltenham Stripe carpet in ‘duck egg’. Stripes are very popular at the moment and really make a statement when you enter the O’Reilly’s home. “We knew we wanted a striped carpet, but Tom helped us find the right one and delivered lots of sample books for us to choose from. The Cheltenham carpet is extremely good quality and yet was still within our price range. It is hard-wearing too, which is ideal with our cat, Alfie, in the house.” Finally, the couple were keen to have stair rods to add a unique touch to the house and they found the perfect ones by Premier Trims. The Lancaster stair rods in ‘antique brass’ are a lovely addition to their home and complement its vintage style. “From start to finish, Dronfield Carpets & Floors were an absolute pleasure to deal with. Tom is a real gentleman and was always onhand to help. I couldn’t recommend their services enough.” Dronfield Carpets & Floors 120 Sheffield Road, Dronfield, S18 2GE Tel: 01246 292391 www.dronfieldcarpetsandfloors.co.uk

Two of the leading businesswomen in the Southside region reveal the secrets of their success. Cristina Wildsmith Chi-Chi’s and Blush “We provide a top class shopping experience at The Forge in Dronfield and have a range of sizes from 8-26. We have introduced new labels this season, which look great and offer exceptional value, so we are excited to see how they are received. “I like to be in the boutique, meeting customers and friends and working closely with my daughter, Daniella, who has been in retail with me for ten
years now. She brings fresh new ideas and interesting styles and designs to the boutique. “I would like to see the business continue with its current growth without sacrificing any of our valued principles. Although I have no intention of retiring just yet, I hope and expect to see Daniella take the business forward in the future. “For those looking to start a career I would say: get appropriate training, seek good employers amongst whom you will find good examples to follow, work hard and be yourself.”
Anne-Marie White Blanc “Blanc is a French nod to my surname and is a ladies’ boutique that I created nearly four years ago. After researching the market I felt that there was a need for quality clothing different to what was being offered on the high street. The brands I stock offer exclusivity in Chesterfield, so rest assured you won't turn up to a special occasion in the same outfit as someone else. “I offer a personal service and I believe that’s

why so many customers keep coming back. “Never give up on your dreams. Do your homework and research heavily before committing your time and money. If you haven’t previously run your own business then ask for advice from someone who has. Luckily, my husband has supported me and has given me knowledge of the expectations from Companies House and HMRC. “It’s important to constantly be aware of the changes in the market and be able to adapt. Try to be the very best in your chosen field. Stay focused and work hard.”

World-class competition Combining thrilling equestrian sport with entertainment for all the family, the Dodson and Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials is an event like no other.
S
erene countryside, flowing manes and the sound of thundering hooves can only mean one thing: the highlight of the equestrian calendar – Chatsworth International Horse Trials – is on the horizon. You can expect three days (15-17 May) of thrilling world-class competition, combining beautiful dressage, nail-biting show jumping and dramatic cross country around the parkland at Chatsworth. Set in the heart of the Peak District, the house and its magnificent grounds are home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The couple are known equine sports lovers – the Duke served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade, while the Duchess owns a number of prize-winning animals – which makes Chatsworth – and its 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland – the perfect location for these trials. The weekend showcases some of the world’s leading horses and riders, attracting spectators from far and wide. Previous winners include Andrew Nicholson, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. Although the horses and their riders will, of course, take centre stage throughout the weekend, there’s also an exciting varied programme of arena events too. This includes a sheep show, with New Zealander Richard

Savory and his presenters entertaining and educating with their fantastic sheep. The highlight will be the sheep show hustle or dancing sheep. If two-stepping sheep aren’t really your thing, there will be a falconry display, the British scurry and trials driving, have-a-go dog agility and dog show, pony club mounted games and Mullenscote Gun Dog display, which will demonstrate varying breeds and ages from puppies to fully trained dogs. Away from the arena, there is a children’s
entertainment area with mini Land Rovers, farmyard animals, face painting, a bouncy castle and a giant slide. Plus over 100 highquality trade stands selling a wide selection of country clothing, equestrian products, fashion accessories, crafts and delicious food. The Dodson and Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials truly is three days of thrilling equestrian sport, combined with entertainment for all the family in the beautiful surroundings of Chatsworth – an event not to be missed.

Your Guide to Eventing: Equestrian eventing isn’t mere horseplay – it’s a showcase of skill and determination. Its three disciplines – dressage, cross country and show jumping – are designed to test both horses and riders in a variety of different ways. The successful competitor will be able to demonstrate an ability to move seamlessly between them – but that’s no easy task…
Dressage While dressage may seem the calmest of the three disciplines, it’s arguably the most difficult – one that demands many years of training in order to succeed. ‘Horse ballet’, as it’s known, requires the rider to display precise control of the horse as it performs a series of movements, including pirouettes and gaits. Points are awarded for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to show perfect harmony between horse and rider.
Cross country Considered by many to be the highlight of the trials, cross country is fast paced and action packed. Horse and rider race against the clock around Chatsworth Park on the banks of the River Derwent. The challenging course is filled with seemingly impossible fences and solid obstacles – including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hand-carved wooden sculptures. There’s an obvious amount of skill involved, but this discipline involves a fair bit of courage too – not for the faint-hearted.
Show jumping The show jumping stage of the trials takes place in an arena and sees competitors tackling fences made of brightly coloured poles. As ever, athleticism and control are of vital importance – penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking off a pole and failing to complete the course in the set order.

The wonder of Calabria Spicy sausage may be the secret ingredient, but there’s much more to enjoy at a restaurant where quality is a key part of the menu. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns
A
fter what felt like a cruelly long winter, the first days of summer – which arrived just after Easter in Derbyshire – were more than welcome. And when the sun began to shine, there was only one place I wanted to celebrate; Calabria on the quaint cobbled streets of Chesterfield’s Glumangate. After shrugging off our light summer jackets (goodbye winter coats!), my partner and I settled into a well-positioned window seat to peruse the menu and check out our surroundings. Vibrant pink lighting, exposed brick walls and bright patterned upholstery may sound like a heady mix but it works beautifully and, along with a wonderful buzz and exceptional service, makes for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. To our left, a family of five with teenage daughters chatted animatedly and to our right two ladies nattered ten to the dozen. A surreptitious eyeing-up of their chosen dishes provided a delightful promise of things to come and we had soon selected our first two courses. Before we tucked in to our chosen meal, we were presented with a complimentary prestarter of prawn and crayfish crostini with onion and chive purée. Light and creamy, it was a fine way to begin proceedings. Starters continued along this theme and upped the artful presentation stakes even further. My partner’s seafood filo pastry parcels were crisp and delicious; the crayfish adding a delicate counterpart to the stronger flavour of the crab. However it was my confit duck pila (meaning
SOUTHSIDE 18
‘stack’, as the menu helpfully translated) that won this round. Cool cucumber and zingy blood orange cut right through the beautifully rich meat, and the crostini – gently balanced on top – provided a lovely crunchy addition. On to mains and my pan-fried sea bass came perfectly cooked on a bed of saffron potatoes, clams, peas and shallots, all surrounded by a gentle seafood broth that brought the flavours together incredibly well. Across the table, my partner’s more robust dish of belly pork with glazed pig cheeks and tomato ragu went down a storm. The accompanying velvety smooth mash was also given a decent kick from ‘nduja. Known as the ‘wonder ingredient’, this spicy Calabrian sausage is used throughout the restaurant’s menu and is even available by the jar to take home. It comes heartily recommended. Given the standard of our first two courses, we couldn’t wait to see what the dessert menu had to offer – and we weren’t disappointed. All the superlatives in the world weren’t enough to describe the absolute deliciousness of my dark chocolate torte. Teamed with a rich and sweet peanut butter purée, smooth white chocolate jelly and a smattering of peanuts, grated chocolate and vanilla ice cream, it was simply divine. My partner was also making noises about his deconstructed rhubarb and custard dessert, washed down with a super sweet Greco di bianco liqueur, the dish’s recommended drink pairing. But while they both looked – and, I’m assured, tasted – fantastic, nothing could have distracted me from my chocolate bliss. By the end of the meal, we were in no doubt – this is the kind of quality that only comes from superior ingredients and excellent attention to detail… perhaps we won’t be waiting until a change in season for our next visit.

estled in the heart of the beautiful Peak District in the quaint Derbyshire village of Grindleford, there are few venues better located than boutique hotel and restaurant The Maynard. While prime location is certainly an attraction, it’s the two AA rosette restaurant renowned for providing an exquisite dining experience with deliciously innovative food that steals the show. With contemporary décor and beautiful hand-painted murals of Derbyshire countryside, it’s easy to see that the bar, lounge and restaurant have been designed with both comfort and style in mind. As we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and a selection of olives in the lounge, it was clear the evening would include more than a standard three-course meal. Head chef Mark Vernon is the mastermind behind the adventurous a la carte menu and we first got a taste of his skills with the goat’s cheese and leek samosa starter. This Indian classic with a twist came team with a mint-onion relish, and a shallot and chive salad – a sensational arrangement of tastes and textures. My partner tucked in to the black pudding and smoked pancetta salad, with soda bread
croutons, delicate roast baby apples and onion chutney; a sublime savoury-sweet combination that set high expectations for what was ahead. A beetroot, vodka and apple gazpacho amuse-bouche was the ideal palate refresher before we enjoyed our mains. The fillet of sea trout with caper, saffron and lemon butter came accompanied by a sunblush tomato and a ratte potato crisp salad and was a wonderfully light dish packed with flavour. Across the table, my companion savoured the beautifully tender venison haunch, beetroot and fondant potatoes, chantenay carrots and – a special mention must be given to the luxurious – chocolate jus. The just-right portion sizes allowed room for dessert and – being a sucker for an old classic – my partner couldn’t resist the jam roly-poly. Far from the school dinner approach, this neat sponge cake came oozing with alluring jam balanced with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. My pot au chocolate, topped with rich coffee cream and served with crisp coconut biscotti, was a deliciously indulgent ending to a truly sensational evening. It’s clear Vernon has flair and an eye for detail and it is this, combined with the tranquil surroundings and attentive staff, that make dining at The Maynard a truly memorable experience. And after checking out the many special offers online, it won’t be long before we’re back to indulge in an overnight stay too. Visit www.themaynard.co.uk for more details.

With charm in abundance, The Rutland Arms is the perfect place for a perfect pint.
O
n 9 February 1946, in his regular Evening Standard column, George Orwell described his perfect – albeit mythical – pub, The Moon
Under Water. In it he would be welcomed by friendly bar staff who knew their many regular customers by name, find real burning fires, wander into a delightful garden and – most importantly – sup some really great beer. Imagine the delight of The Rutland Arms’ landlord and lady – Gary Fantom and Lucie Thacker – when a regular customer described their humble pub as the nearest thing to Orwell’s fantasy watering hole. “It’s simple – we offer a warm welcome and an inviting atmosphere with friendly staff who serve up great beer,” says Gary. “We also don’t play music, apart from a live folk night on the first Tuesday of every month, because a pub should provide a platform for chat and debate.” It was December 2009 when Gary left the motor trade after 30 years to take up the reins as landlord along with his partner Lucie – and they haven’t looked back since. “It was
always in the back of my mind that I wanted to run a pub because, although I’m not a great drinker, I love the art of conversation.” At lunchtime (12-2pm) they serve soup, sandwiches and pie and peas, but food isn’t available in the evening as they believe it distracts from the nature of the pub. “We believe in keeping the pub a proper pub. Food changes the atmosphere and it’s beer we’re passionate about.” From noon till midnight every day they serve six long-standing traditional beer brands, which customers want, recognise and trust. Four well-loved classics are joined by two regularly changing guest beers, as well as a good selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks. With countless awards under their belt, including CAMRA’s 2012 country pub of the year, a Passion for Excellence gold award from Everards in 2013 and, last year, a special recognition for business partner of the year by their brewery, Punch, it’s clear that it’s not just the locals who rate the Rutland. Entries in the Good Pub Guide in 2014 and 2015 have cemented their sterling reputation even further.
“We believe a pub needs an identity, ideas, great products, charm, personality and reasons for customers to want to come back,” says Gary. “The Rutland has all of these in abundance.” The Rutland Arms 96 Main Road, Holmesfield, Dronfield, S18 7WT Tel: 0114 289 0374

SS Eating Out
There is a strong Spanish influence at Casa – even the special oven comes from Barcelona – and the result is a memorable dining experience.
Turn up the heat
W
ith napkins expertly crafted into origami suit jackets, a standing Salvador Dali-inspired melting grandfather clock and a Josper oven that heats up to an impressive 350 degrees – Casa’s Cocina restaurant has a winning recipe for lasting impressions. And while the first and second of these simply add to the overall character of the stylish award-winning two-rosette restaurant, the last is essential to producing the highest quality meats – cooked exactly as they should be – and owner Steve Perez wouldn’t have it any other way. Steve’s love affair with Josper ovens began one evening at a high-end London restaurant. The steak he ate that night was a cut above, and the answer – it turned out – was in a Josper. This charcoal-fired oven from Barcelona combines the functions of an oven and grill, and by working at such high temperatures that the meat is sealed, smoked and grilled all at the same time. The results are unique. These ovens are particularly popular in Spain, where Steve’s father comes from, and this cultural influence resonates heavily throughout the hotel and Cocina’s menu.
The starter menu in particular offers a true taste of tapas with a selection of eight dishes to choose from. One of the newest additions to the spring menu – the chargrilled cumin-marinated lamb skewers with a tomato and herb salsa – proved to be a winning choice. But the charcuteria board, with a selection of prime Spanish cold meats, rustic breads and olives, and the sautéed chorizo and sweet potato were equally delicious. An introduction to the main menu tells customers their meat is locally sourced and, where possible, is reared and sourced from Steve’s organic Walton Lodge Farm, just four miles away. The beef, which comes from Belted Galloway and Highland Cattle, is hung for 28 days to allow the flavours to develop and my partner put it to the test with a 4oz fillet steak. Cooked medium-rare and served on a rustic wooden board with proper chunky chips and a side of onion rings – both in miniature fryers – my companion confirmed the dish was as
Casa owner Steve Perez with chefs (from left) Paul Heeley, Andy Wilson and Jack Butler
delicious as the presentation promised – and the steak was the most succulent he’d ever tasted. But the true star of the show – perhaps I’m biased – was the oven-roasted fillet of cod wrapped in pancetta, served with a butter bean, chorizo and rocket fricassee, pea purée, crispy capers and a lemon beurre blanc. Not only was the fish cooked to perfection, but the savoury flavours were offset wonderfully by the light zing of the lemon. It was a true sensation. Desserts are not simply just a way to end a meal at Cocina, but for many are the highlight. Both the vanilla poached pear with coconut meringue and coconut ice cream and the passion fruit crème brûlée with mixed fruit biscotti were savoured attentively – as something of this calibre deserves. Before it was time to (reluctantly) leave the restaurant, I met head chef Andy Wilson. He has been cooking up excellence at Cocina since Casa opened in 2010 and from a brief conversation with Andy and two of his chefs, Paul Heeley and Jack Butler, it’s clear that passion for, and knowledge about, food plays a huge part in the success here. Long may it continue.

SS Heating
Banish your boiler worries A Blueflame annual service plan will keep your heating running smoothly.
A
s the first signs of summer begin to show, it can be easy to forget the troubles our boilers have been causing us during the colder months. But before we know it, those chilly winter evenings will be creeping in again, and it’s important to ensure your heating system is in working order, so you can escape from the cold to a haven of snug warmth. Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-based gas service company that specialises in providing annual service plans for central heating systems. Established 12 years ago, this professional family run business has over 30 years’ combined experience in the industry. Heating and hot water are things that we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise this until something goes wrong. When it does, it’s incredibly frustrating – and often very expensive. Service plans are a way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments. They help to ensure someone is always on hand to help if things do go wrong. With any boiler, the parts and labour charges that come with ad hoc repairs can be very costly. The advantage of a service plan is
SOUTHSIDE 28
the peace of mind it provides – as payments are made on a monthly basis you’ll have nothing to worry about, safe in the knowledge that there’ll be someone on hand to fix your system when it fails. Something that often discourages us from agreeing contracts is the small print – but there are no such worries with Blueflame. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12 point font,” says company director John Beevers. “You won’t have to trawl through a book of details!” Blueflame offers a few different levels of cover, but the basic packages are silver, which covers boilers, or gold, which also covers the full central heating system. Compared to the larger national firms, prices are very competitive.
Blueflame specialise in service plans, but that’s by no means all they do. They offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and power flushing to mention just a few. Of course, when it comes to plumbing and gas businesses, the most important thing isn’t the services on offer but how trustworthy and reliable the company is. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Blueflame are – they’re Gas Safe registered, and members of Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme. What’s even more impressive is Blueflame’s fabulous reputation. They’ve got a database full of satisfied customers – many of whom return to this friendly company again and again. Blueflame are on hand to help all year round, so you can enjoy the sun safe in the knowledge that you’ve already planned ahead for a cosy winter. Call today to find out more. Make the right choice
Words: Stephanie Burns
From small class sizes to specialist sports teachers, Sheffield High School has many outstanding features.
T
here are few schools in the region that offer seamless education for girls aged four to 18. Sheffield High School, the long-established independent day school nestling in a beautiful residential area in leafy Broomhill, is however one such place. This award-winning school develops dynamic and open-minded young women, who begin their journey to success in the Infant and Junior school. With small class sizes, individual attention given to each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am6.15pm, on-site meal preparation, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum – to name just a few of the school’s many outstanding features – it’s little wonder that Sheffield High pupils grow into such confident, considerate young women. Its membership of the influential Girls’ Day School Trust – the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools – gives parents even greater confidence in the school’s ability to provide the very best education for their daughters. Headteacher, Anne Jones, who joined the school 20 years ago, first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, so she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “Our aim is for every girl to reach her
SOUTHSIDE 44
potential within an exciting, challenging and inspirational environment where there is always lots to do,” she says. “Girls and boys learn in different ways and here we are able to take an approach that suits our girls perfectly.” Pupils excel in traditionally maleorientated subjects such as ICT, maths and technology as they’re able to fully develop their confidence in these areas. Science is also a high priority and the specialist science zone, designed specifically for primary school learning, ensures the girls always look forward to their weekly two-hour science sessions. The school also provides an outstanding selection of more than 30 extra-curricular activities including sports such as netball and hockey, drumming, string and wind bands, arts and crafts and technology and there’s even a computer coding club. Every member of staff runs at least one of these clubs, so that their broad range of skills is fully utilised.
During free time, there are plenty more opportunities for the girls to expend their energy in the school’s safe and stimulating environment. The newly refurbished playground, which pupils helped to design, boasts a host of exciting and colourful play equipment. Throughout their education, the girls are mentored by senior students, who act as role models for the Infant and Junior School girls. Sixth formers even come back to where their journey began to work with younger students and encourage them to exceed their own expectations. Taking the first steps into a new environment can be a daunting prospect for a young girl. Knowing that she not only has the support of caring, specialist staff but also access to outstanding facilities ensures that each girl settles into school life quickly at Sheffield High – and that she is well supported throughout her education. To find out why Sheffield High School is the right choice for your daughter, call 0114 266 1435 to arrange a visit, or go to www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk for more information. Ashdell girls have talent Ashdell has proved once again it has talented girls, as two year six pupils have been awarded scholarships to their senior schools. Eleonora Coull has gained an academic scholarship to Foremark School, Repton, and Lily Godbole was awarded a maths scholarship at Sheffield High School – the first ever maths scholarship for an Ashdell pupil. “We are absolutely delighted and very proud of our girls,” said headteacher Anne Camm. “They all work exceptionally hard in their final year here and the results of that hard work have most definitely paid off.”
Care in the community Some adults are more vulnerable than others, and they need a little extra help and support to lead a happy and fulfilling life. The Sharing Lives scheme, from Sheffield City Council, provides carers who support independent living for adults. Carers offer the social interaction needed and help prevent people becoming socially isolated and withdrawn. Sharing Lives carers receive payment and choose the amount of work they do, from just 12 hours per week. They also get to choose what kind of care and support they offer, from the befriending service, which offers support out and about in the community; helping people to do the things they like to do like shopping, through to providing long-term respite care in their home. Anyone over 18 can apply to become a carer. Apply today and you could make someone’s life better. For information visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/sharing lives, email sharinglives@sheffield.gov.uk, or phone 0114 273 5275.

Tricia and Becca have known each other for over three years. They met through Sharing Lives, a Sheffield City Council service which helps support independent living for adults. Becca needs a little extra care and support to enjoy her life, so she goes to Tricia’s house some weekends for respite care, to give her usual carers a break and get the time and space she needs. Becca talks fondly of her time at Tricia’s; “I really look forward to when it’s my weekend at Tricia’s house. I’m really ready for it - without a break, things used to escalate and get a little tense at times, so a break makes me feel refreshed when I go back home.” Tricia adds; “My husband and I talk fondly about the people we’ve supported through Sharing Lives. The best thing is feeling that we are working together to make things better. I think it’s worth getting involved. You don’t need a spare room to be part of Sharing Lives, you just need some time and a heart for people.” There are many more adults across Sheffield who need a little extra help and support. All Sharing Lives carers receive payment and training. Anyone over 18 can apply. Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest motoring news. The thinking mans supercar The last generation Audi R8 was a huge success. This new version has some big shoes to fill. Based on the Lamborghini Huracan, the new Audi R8 will come in two flavours when it’s released in late 2015: the V10 and V10 Plus. The former obviously gets a V10 engine, this time packing 533hp. The latter also has a V10, but the Plus adds an extra 69hp, equating to a total output of 602hp – the most powerful production Audi ever. Both versions come with quattro allwheel drive with variable torque control, and all the latest Audi tech including the ‘virtual cockpit’ for the instruments. Plus, only a duelclutch transmission will be offered. No manual. The V10 will start from £119,500 and the V10 Plus from £137,500.
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – it’s back Porsche’s ultimate track-day monster has returned. Gone is the GT3’s 3.8-litre engine and in arrives a new 4.0-litre straight-six unit. Power has risen to 500hp making the 0-62mph sprint a blur at 3.3 seconds and the 0-124mph time takes 10.9 seconds. Only the PDK dual-clutch gearbox will be offered. Prices will start from £131,296 when they arrive in Porsche showrooms in May.
Who needs an SUV? Volkswagen has done to the Passat what they did to the Octavia: they’ve jacked-up the ride-height, added black body cladding as well as fitting permanent all-wheel drive. For sure it’ll tackle muddy terrain better than most SUVs and with the Passat’s mandatory estate body, it’ll be as practical, if not more so. There will be five engines available which range from 148hp to 217hp for the petrol engines and 148hp to 237hp for the diesels’. All engines will come with a stop-start system, the ability to recover energy lost whilst braking and battery regeneration.
New found sophistication? The eagerly anticipated new Ford Focus RS will be packing a new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine under its bonnet, housing 316hp. To tame all these rampaging stallions, the power is delivered through – for the first time in a Focus – an all-new all-wheel drive system. A six-speed manual is the only option as well. The tell-tail signs of the Focus RS are the addition of a new, aggressive front bumper; side skirts; a projecting rear wing; a prominent rear diffuser; and two enormous gaping exhaust tailpipes. Even with all these alterations, it looks rather subdued compared to previous RS models that went before; there’s no bonnet bulges or flared wheel arches. It still looks menacing though. Due to go on sale in early 2016 costing around £30,000.
Continued improvement The Ford EcoSport has had a hard life since it was born last year by not quite being able to match its closest rivals for space and driving enjoyment. Ford have realised this and so they’ve created the ‘sportier’ EcoSport S. Available later on in the year, the EcoSport S will incorporate the new engineering tweaks of the normal model – 10mm drop in ride height, improved sound deadening, a reworked steering system and improved styling changes to the interior – but the S will add a new exterior colour named deep impact blue, a black roof, black mirror caps, a sporty rear diffuser and privacy glass. The EcoSport S will incorporate the same engines as the normal EcoSport. The diesel engines however gain an extra 5hp.

SS Chesterfield Champions
We’ve got a billion reasons to celebrate our town’s growing success, says Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield.
W
e regularly hear about new investment in Chesterfield, whether this is Markham Vale, Peak Resorts, Chesterfield Waterside or one of our expanding local businesses. But at the Celebrate Chesterfield event it was calculated that the total amount of money being invested in the town over the next ten years is actually £1billion. There was an audible intake of breath in the room when it was announced, proving once again that Chesterfield is punching well and truly above its weight. This investment will bring lots of homes, leisure facilities, restaurants and businesses to Chesterfield, which will create thousands of jobs. With jobs comes more spending power in our local economy so everyone in our town will benefit. The future for Chesterfield is very exciting but we must not lose sight of what we have now. It is important to support the businesses that are already within the town and help them continue to thrive so they will be around to reap the benefits of
SOUTHSIDE 50
the £1billion of future investment. The annual Chesterfield Retail Awards organised by Destination Chesterfield is a great example of how we strive to celebrate and support businesses. I am delighted to see that so many people have got behind the awards once again and nominated their favourite retailers. We’ll be announcing the winners in June. However, it is my view that every one of Chesterfield’s retailers should be commended. It is no secret that UK high streets are in decline and, though ours is bucking the trend and doing well, we could do better. One example is the plan for the former Co-op building that is in the pipeline and I, like everyone else, look forward to seeing an important building brought back into use. Whether or not you nominated a business for the Retail Awards, my plea to you - to keep Chesterfield thriving now – is for you to shop local. Independent retailers in
the town centre and along Chatsworth Road and Whittington Moor have everything you could ever need. You name it – fruit and vegetables from the market, gifts, clothing, furniture, jewellery – we really do have it all. Our town’s mix of retailers – independents alongside high street chains – is what sets us apart from other high streets. We have variety that others are lacking and this is the reason people travel from the Peak District, Buxton, Dronfield, South Sheffield and even Leicestershire to shop here. But let’s make sure we support our independent retailers. Chesterfield can enjoy its modern awakening now, not in ten years’ time.
