Achieve your dreams Manufacturing everything themselves mean Kitchen & Bedroom Creation can deliver a truly bespoke design.

G

etting a new kitchen or bedroom is a big decision. It’s one that’s not made any easier by the fact that you can’t always get what you want – no matter how well made or unique a design is, it’s hard to find one that matches your requirements exactly. Thankfully, one Chesterfield company can do just that. Kitchen & Bedroom Creation have the answers to all your kitchen and bedroom problems. They manufacture everything themselves to your personal bespoke design in their own 25,000 sq ft factory – meaning you get the room you’ve always dreamed of.

Awkward unnecessary fillers are a thing of the past, as the team can make doors and cabinets to any size, and there are some great corner solutions to maximise storage and facilitate easy access too. Furniture can be made in a wide range of materials including laminate, vinyl, gloss, painted MDF, solid timber such as oak, maple and walnut, painted timber and acrylic. Worktops can be chosen from laminate, solid timber, granite, quartz or solid surface such as Corian. You can see a snapshot of the hundreds of different styles and finishes at the showroom on Chatsworth Road. They also offer a free design service,

where an experienced team member will visit your home to do a survey and discuss available options with you, to find out exactly what your desired outcome is. They will then create your bespoke design, and show it to you in a 3D computer presentation – allowing you to see your new kitchen or bedroom in glorious photorealistic colour. Once you’re absolutely satisfied with the design, the fitting team will carry out the installation with the utmost professionalism and a minimum of fuss. With most things, a bespoke service means a high cost – but that’s not the case at Kitchen & Bedroom Creation. The company offers competitive value direct from the factory. When it comes to deciding to have a new kitchen or bedroom, the most important decision is choosing the right people for the job. With over 30 years of experience and a dedication to great customer service, you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands with Kitchen & Bedroom Creation. here’s no point stepping out onto the street in a sharp suit, only to finish it off with a cheap pair of shoes bulging at the sides and splitting at the seams. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike, other accessories like cufflinks or a tie, a great pair completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and as such should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. And it’s shoes – handsome, comfortable and durable men’s shoes – that are the ‘sole’ of Charles Brooks’ business, if you’ll excuse the pun. An expert cobbler with over 50 years’ experience, Charles opened his first shop in 1972 after visiting his father at Darnall’s Coombes shoe repair factory as a youngster. A well-heeled gentleman himself, he understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of his Fulwood Road store. Loake, Barker and Tricker’s are among this select group of specialist designers, all of which are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved

in the making of just one pair of Loake Goodyear Welted shoes, most of which are carried out by highly-skilled craftsmen. Likewise, Barker, which produces over 200,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually, and Tricker’s shoes are carefully crafted by a team of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are handstitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the inner sole, which allows feet to breathe. A few decades ago, most of the shoes that men in this country bought were made in Northampton. But now only a few

specialist shoemakers remain; the rest have gone abroad where production is cheaper. “Mass produced shoes are not made to last,” says Charles. “They are glued together, and the plastic soles are finished with only a thin layer of leather, consequently they start to fall apart within a few months of wear. “Invest in a properly made pair of shoes and look after them, they can last anything up to ten years. They get better the more you wear them; some of my customers have been wearing the same pair for decades.” It is Charles’ meticulous eye for detail and passion for craftsmanship that has allowed him to cultivate a loyal clientele of customers. “We all call these 30-year shoes,” he says pointing to a beautiful, shiny pair of tan Tricker’s. “My customers are still bringing their first pair back three decades later to be repaired.” Charles and his expert team of cobblers offer shoe and leather repairs, shoe care products, key cutting, and have a range of wallets and briefcases for sale. They can also fix broken zips, and fit new watch batteries and watch straps. SS Travel The spiaggia dei conigli – or Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa

Welcome to the tropics of the Med Discover a paradise setting – and the world’s most beautiful beach – just a short flight from Malta.

I

f you are searching for the most beautiful beach in the world, a visit to La Baia Del Conigli on Lampedusa is an absolute must. It is a true marvel, in a dreamlike setting, surrounded by a magical atmosphere with incredible marine life and water whose clarity and shades of blue attract visitors from all over the world. Lampedusa is one of the Pelagian Islands and living proof that even in these days of mass tourism, unspoilt gems can still be unearthed. The Pelagian Islands are a true gem in the

SOUTHSIDE 16

Mediterranean, and a short 25-minute flight from Malta will take you to this paradise setting. And despite being declared the world’s most beautiful beach by Trip Advisor, La Baia Del Conigli (or Rabbits as it is known) is still a delightfully tranquil haven for those who prefer to steer clear of the tourist hordes. The Pelagian Islands are visited by a limited number of tourists and apart from the month of August they are rarely busy. But for those in the know, this is a muchloved destination, due to a combination of magnificent coastline, outstanding awardwinning beaches, and unique beautiful scenery.

How to get there Spatravel.co.uk is the first tour operator in the UK to offer the unique opportunity to visit the Pelagian Islands this summer. You can be among the first to visit and swim in the clearest waters of the Mediterranean. They have exclusively packaged two fantastic eight-night holidays that combine Malta and the magical Pelagian Islands. Both packages offer four nights in Malta and four nights in Lampedusa. The packages include return flights from the UK to Malta and Malta to Lampedusa, transfers and

accommodation on a half board basis. In the Pelagian Islands time stands still. Lampedusa’s clear waters have an abundance of fish, perfect for those who like to swim, scuba or snorkel or just relax on the beach. Everything is close at hand and renting a motorised boat is a great way of exploring and discovering the many beautiful beaches, coves and tiny bays. With delicious Italian cuisine and a chilled-out 1970s/80s vibe, this is the ultimate relaxing break.

Life’s a beach The island’s northern and western coast is rather high and inaccessible, while the eastern and south-eastern shores boast magnificent sandy beaches. From the smallest and most hidden to the largest and most popular, the Pelagian beaches are numerous and welcoming. The splendid coves of Cala Pisana and Cala Uccello open onto the glistening sea, while the Calas Spugna and Maluk lie on the island’s east. Cala Greca is miniscule and covered in whiter-than-white sand. One of the secrets of the island is Cala Galera, accessible by passing through the island’s characteristic low, rocky gullies on the water. See the beach on the socalled Dead Sea, where the water is super calm, and the same-named Grotto. Also remarkable are the spectacular and buzzing Cala Francese and the famous Guitgia Beach, which has the nearest hotels and is accessible

by public transport. From here you can reach Cala Croce and the beach on Cala Madonna, along with Porto N’Tone, a tiny beach with fine, white sand ideal for families and children. On the island’s southern side, Cala Pulcino and countless grottoes can be found.

both day and night. Search for the underwater statue Madonna Del Mare, 46 feet deep and surrounded by burrows for octopus and sargo fish.

Sail on

If you are more of a land lover, you can walk the trails that run up to the island’s foremost three peaks – Monte Rosso, featuring a cultivated crater, Monte Nero and Monte Vulcano.

A private charter small boat ride around the Pelagians is the best way to appreciate the beauty of its beaches, coves and tiny harbours. The sea’s clarity and the brilliant seafloor, abundant with flora and fauna, is superb for scuba-divers and snorkelers, who can choose from a wide array of diving spots,

“In the Pelagian Islands time stands still. Lampedusa’s clear waters have an abundance of fish, perfect for those who like to swim, scuba or snorkel or just relax on the beach.”

Take a stroll

Alfresco dining – Lampedusa style During the hottest nights of the summer, make an effort to attend the many celebrations happening on the island’s beaches, including bonfires, spaghetti cookouts and barbecues, and musical performances. Taste the fish cous cous, a mix of African and Sicilian flavours; the Pelagian version features shrimp, lobster and seafood. Accompanied with delicious chilled white wine, it’s a truly memorable feast.

Facts and Figures Taking their name from the Greek word for ‘high sea’, The Pelagian Islands are closer to Malta than their administrative home in southern Italy. Belonging to the Sicilian province of Agrigento and situated 150km west of Malta, this group of three islands comprises of Lampione, Linosa and the largest of the three, Lampedusa. In 2002 the islands became a nature reserve due to the nesting sites on Lampedusa and Linosa of the rare loggerhead sea turtles, which now attract nature lovers from all over the world. Whales and dolphins can also be seen as well as an abundance of flora and fauna. Picture courtesy Natursports / Shutterstock.com

SS Business

Anne-Marie White Blanc Blanc is a French nod to director Anne-Marie’s surname. She opened the ladies boutique five years ago. “After researching the market, and having over a decade in managing High Street stores for a major fashion retailer, I felt the importance of being able to offer quality, yet affordable, clothing with a very personal approach,” she says. “We stock a vast amount of choice both in casual and occasional wear. We specialise in and are proud to stock some of the most sought after mummy of the bride brands in the area.” Anne-Marie manages a team of “five lovely ladies”, does all the buying for the coming season, and is always preparing for the next event or fashion show. She believes the secret to success is to achieve a good work-life balance: “Do your research, follow your dreams, don’t be afraid of hard work and most of all enjoy what you do!”

Louise Peel H & F Vintage Tea Rooms Louise Peel is the director of H & F Vintage Tearooms, a business which provides Chesterfield with the finest loose teas, gourmet coffee and delicious food whilst being surrounded by a gorgeous vintage interior. The tearoom has recently been refurbished to allow for more outdoor seating this summer. A few changes inside means they can now accommodate for more customers and cater private events. “[My personal career ambition is] to grow our tearooms with new and exciting ideas,” says Louise. “My advice to others is, if this is something you really want then go for it. Life can be hectic with family and work, but it is so rewarding to be a part of something which you have created.”

Dave Stone Design provides a full design and installation service of quality kitchens from initial planning to completion. Director and showroom manager Suzanne Stone’s day-to-day work includes book-keeping, accountancy, meeting and greeting clients old and new, and assisting David in the design stage. Suzanne had a 28 year career in banking before she joined David in the business. “I have experienced the life of a ‘career woman’, dealing with sales targets and deadlines. I decided that this wasn’t what I wanted, or indeed, my clients wanted,” she says. “People buy from people. We have developed our business into a very friendly and easy company to deal with. “We have gone through an organised growth spurt over the last few years and developed our business to work with higher-end users. “Our objective now is to remain committed to our staff and client base and to provide them with the service they deserve.”

Kilner’s Cakes bake and make bespoke celebration cakes, from first birthday cakes, to wedding cakes. Everything they make is bespoke to each individual customer. They sell cake decorating products and are always happy to give help and advice to people trying it at home. They also offer classes/workshops/parties for people who are interested in cake decorating. “We would love to develop our training workshops, where we can teach others how to create amazing masterpieces,” says owner Andrea Kilner. “My ambition is to open a second bakery, concentrating on special dietary ingredients.” Her advice to other business women starting out is to stick with it: “Its hard work, but it’ll be worth all the effort and heartache that you will get along the way.”

Joanne is the director and owner of Kip McGrath Education in Matlock and Chesterfield. SOUTHSIDE 20

W

ith just a matter of weeks until our sister magazine’s much-anticipated Westside Restaurant Awards, competition is hotting up in the region’s eateries. Our judges are out and about, busily debating the merits of restaurants across Sheffield and North Derbyshire in various categories – including the coveted Westside Restaurant of the Year. But there is one extra special category where our reviewers take a backseat – The Westside Readers’ Choice Award. We know you have strong opinions when it comes to dining out; now we want to know what your favourite restaurant is. The Westside Readers’ Choice award cuts across all boundaries. Whether your favourite restaurant is a fine dining venue, a classy café or something in between, all votes are equal. Last year, readers voted the Tickled Trout – Barlow’s fabulous dining pub that combines Derbyshire pride with Italian inspiration – as their top choice. Owner Chris Mapp was thrilled to win the approval of Westside readers and to receive confirmation that he was striking a chord with the people who matter most – the paying public.

Our readers are a discerning bunch and the announcement of this particular prize is always a highlight of our evening. Cast your vote now by visiting our website – www.regionalmagazine.co.uk – and following the link. All entries will go into a prize draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant on us. All votes must include a home address and contact details; multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. The closing date is Friday 20 May so be quick, and don’t miss your opportunity to cast your vote. For the owners and hard-working staff of all the nominated restaurants, our awards dinner is an opportunity to celebrate the excellent range of dining-out venues on our doorstep. These are the longest running and most prestigious dining awards in Sheffield and North Derbyshire. The winners will be announced at our glitzy awards ceremony at Baldwin’s Omega on Monday 6 June, which promises to be a great evening. So make sure you have your say on the final outcome and cast your vote now. There will be a full preview in next month’s Westside.

F

irst impressions count. For homeowners who take pride in their property’s appearance, a well-paved driveway or patio and a beautifully-manicured garden – the first things any visitor to your home will see – are top priorities. If you’re looking to spruce up the outside of your house, ProPave is the company to call. With more than 25 years’ experience, this local, reliable business has been trusted by many of the region’s homeowners to breathe new life into their property’s exteriors. ProPave’s experienced team of three is led by owner Paul, who deals with each job from start to finish. “We also do all of our own work so you won’t have to juggle different contractors coming to your home,” says Paul. They begin by meeting with clients to discuss ideas and then get to work on the

design. Though many people have a good idea of what they want and Paul is more than happy to be directed by his clients, ProPave are also well versed in guiding those who are unsure. ProPave specialise in all aspects of hard landscaping, including natural stone block paving, granite stone sets and natural sandstone flags, including English York stone and Indian sandstone paving. They can also do work on new lawns, returfs, garden maintenance, concreting, fencing and brickwork, among other things. Most recently, they have added another impressive string to their bow in the form of artificial grass, the low maintenance, attractive alternative to a traditional lawn. Last year, we completed a young man’s patio after we’d been recommended to him by his parents whose driveway we did ten years ago.” When dealing with ProPave, expect a hassle-free, reliable and professional service. Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “Many thanks for your follow-up visit this morning. We were already very pleased with what you and your team had done to convert our garage to a bigger kitchen; and your review of the finished work was entirely in keeping with the care and attention that has been taken throughout the project. The pictures you took should show a cheerful, bright, and airy place where we will be spending much of our time in future. The quality of the materials used, and of the workmanship that went into the assembly, were high. Although there were no major hiccups in any of the processes, we much appreciated your willingness to answer the questions we had, and to teach us how to make best use of the kitchen and its appliances. Enjoy the thrills With three packed days of fine equine competition and entertainment, the Dodson and Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials is better than ever.

T

he rumble of hooves and the roar of excited crowds echoing in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District can only mean one thing: that’s right; the equestrian extravaganza of the Dodson and Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials is back for another year. Three jam-packed days (13-15 May) of thrilling world-class riding competitions, elegant dressage, exhilarating cross country and endless activities for all the family to enjoy are what’s to be expected from this year’s bigger and better event. Residing in the heart of the Peaks, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire welcome all to their magnificent grounds to experience the highlight of the equestrian calendar. The couple are renowned for their love all of things horses: the Duke has served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade and the Duchess owns many prize-winning animals, making Chatsworth the perfect location for the event. Showcasing some of the world’s leading horses and riders, the weekend attracts

SOUTHSIDE 38

spectators from far and wide. Previous winners include number one in the 2013 FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) Rankings Andrew Nicholson, Chatsworth record breaker Pippa Funnel and William Fox-Pitt. The riders and the horses take centre stage at this amazing event – but the fun doesn’t stop there. Throughout the weekend, there are also a bundle of exciting activities for all the family to enjoy within the beautiful grounds of Chatsworth. This includes a sheep show. What more could you want than dancing sheep arriving at their podiums to their own theme tunes, before an insight into how their wool transforms into a jumper with a special sheep shearing demonstration? These sheep are high contenders for stealing the limelight from the horses and are not to be missed. If horses are more your cup of tea, join the ponies and their riders for the British Scurry and Trials Driving. This tricky obstacle course of cones, barriers, flags, arches and ramps for the ponies takes place all against the clock.

We’re a nation of pooch lovers and Chatsworth are putting on several adorable doggy activities. If you want to get involved, the have-a-go dog show and agility course is definitely for you. All dogs, whatever their size or breed, take part and join in the fun. There will also be a Mullenscote Gun Dog display, a Dog and Duck show and a chance to meet the super friendly canine rescue dogs of the UK Rescue Bears and perhaps even sneak in a quick bear hug with one of the amazing life-savers. Away from the arena, there is a children’s entertainment area with mini Land Rovers, face painting, farmyard animals and a giant bouncy castle. Plus over 100 high quality trade stands ranging from county fashion and equestrian products to crafts and delicious food. The Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials provides three full days of thrilling horse championships combined with stimulating activities for all the family to enjoy within the beautiful Chatsworth grounds, no matter what your age.

Tickets: Your Guide to Eventing: The event consists of three disciplines showcasing the skill and determination of both the horse and rider. The dressage, cross country and show jumping are all designed to test the competitors in a variety of different ways. The winner will demonstrate that they can successfully master each discipline and move flawlessly between them, which demands immense skill, patience and determination to tally up the least penalties at the end of the weekend. Dressage Don’t be fooled by the calm nature of the dressage stage of the competition – even though it may appear easy, it is arguably the most difficult discipline. ‘Horse ballet’, as it’s also known, requires the rider to display precise control over the horse as it performs a sequence of movements, including trot, pirouettes and gaits. The judges award points for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to demonstrate perfect synchronisation between the horse and rider. Cross Country Considered by many to be the highlight of the horse trials, cross country requires speed, power and nerve and definitely isn’t short of any action. At Chatsworth, horse and rider race against the clock around the park on the banks of the River Derwent. Filled with impressive fences and solid obstacles – including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hand-carved wooden sculptures means this course is not one for the faint hearted. The race requires not only skill but a fair amount of courage, too. Show Jumping The final stage of the eventing weekend takes place in the arena and sees competitors tackle fences made from brightly coloured poles, meaning any wobble or knock will not be missed. As ever, athleticism and control are vital as penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking of a pole and failing to complete the course in a set order – a truly tense ending to the weekend.

P

atricia Clifton became the event director of the Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials three years ago and has strived to make the event a fantastic family day out with top entertainment. As well as well as organising Chatsworth Horse Trials, Patricia works with FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) developing eventing in Sub-Saharan Africa and is also on the FEI eventing committee, where plans for the 2020 Olympics are well underway. We caught up with Patricia on globetrotting, sport development and what’s in store for this year’s show.

Sarah Ennis, Pippa Funnel & Emily King

What has changed since you became events director? Well, we’ve got quite a few new additions to the programme – in fact every year we’ve brought in some new attractions and general event upgrades. That has been really exciting, we have grown hugely, but for me, the most important thing is that the team that I started with is still in place, because they do all the work. What’s new this year? This year we have what we call arena eventing, which is very much aimed at amateur riders who want a chance to compete at Chatsworth. It’s a short show jumping course with a 90cm class and 100cm class followed by a short cross country within an arena and it’s the first time we have run it. We thought a lot of people would love the experience of riding at Chatsworth so we hope they will like it. We have another new competition this year, the Event Rider Master Series, is being hosted by Dodson & Horrell, which we hope will attract the top riders in the world. It will run over six events throughout the UK this year and Chatsworth is the first leg. In 2017 it will extend to Europe. The winner will be the Event Rider Master Champion but they will also win significant prize money. How do you prepare for a show? Planning for the show starts almost before the event has finished and it is a year-long process, although not full time. We consider what worked and didn’t work and what we need to change to improve it and then we think about what added value can we give our visitors. What have been the highlights? We have had really good weather the last two years, which makes me very nervous for this year! I think the highlight is to see really happy people; that is what it’s all about. Why should people come to Chatsworth Horse Trials?

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

I think we have a really good offering; apart from horses the dog agility and show, the Newfoundland Rescue Bears and the sheep show are all back by popular demand. In addition, we will have Paws For Thought and the dog and duck show as well as a lot of other activities for children. There are food stalls, and shops, and we’ve got the top riders in the world – we are expecting a large percentage of the top 150 riders, especially in this Olympic year, we hope they will use Chatsworth as part of their preparation for Rio – and there’s the really nice addition of more amateur riders. I think it’s going to be great. What other projects are you involved with? I am still very involved with the FEI development programme, it has been a huge success for the FEI. My particular region, which is Sub-Saharan Africa, has the most incredible people who are working really hard to get the sport of eventing going in their countries. This particular project was supported by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and that actually finishes this year. But because we have made so much progress, I am really keep to find a way to keep promoting and supporting it, so we

don’t get these countries going then just drop them. I am also on the FEI eventing committee, so I am very involved in the 2020 Olympic programme, which aims to try new and innovative ways of bringing our sport to the public. We are working very closely with broadcasters and presenters to create as much excitement around eventing as possible, while keeping the integrity of our sport. What does the future hold for you at Chatsworth? As long as they want me I will stay there, but you never know what is going to happen next. I am still travelling a lot with eventing to all parts of the globe, so there’s always an issue with finding enough time to do all of these things. But for now, I am at Chatsworth and we just hope it carries on going well. When you do decide to hand the reins over, what legacy do you hope to leave behind? I suppose I would want to have helped improve the event and bring new things in that the public and visitors find appealing and to keep a good happy team. I always fear letting people down, so if can manage not to do that I’ll be happy.

SS Motoring

Nissan turns up the drama on the GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.

Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. Feel the noise The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturallyaspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dualclutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.

Diesel joins the Club With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuel-efficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.

Reach for the sky Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electricallyoperated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there’s millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal. The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August..

Unreal: the Bali Hai club is right on the Vegas Strip

SWINGING CITY John Murphy follows in the footsteps of presidents, movie stars and pop idols to sample the delights of golf Las Vegas-style.

John tees off in Vegas

SOUTHSIDE 48

A “

im at the pyramid,” said Dave, my golfing partner in his slow Texas drawl. Were we driving off on an Egyptian course in the sand? Well, we were in the sand but it was more of the Nevada desert sort than the Sahara and the pyramid in question was the Luxor hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. That sums up Vegas – inspiring, mightily impressive, but one step away from reality. And it’s that escape from reality that makes the city such a popular destination with tourists from all over the world, with more than 40 million visitors jetting to the desert destination last year. Vegas boasts a myriad of attractions, from 24-hour gambling to exotic hotels, fine restaurants and sensational shows but one attraction that should not be overlooked is golf. Amazingly there are 52 top quality courses within half an hour’s drive of the airport. Bali Hai club maintains Vegas’ fracture with reality. It is constructed on the famous Vegas Strip with views over an array of

notable landmarks such as the Luxor and MGM hotels. And yet despite its hard-tobelieve location it has a theme – much like the majority of Las Vegas attractions. This course’s theme is a South Pacific island paradise, which is created by deep blue ponds, brilliant white sand bunkers, lush foliage and imposing palm trees. The theme is maintained by the colonial style luxurious club house with its soft leather seating and palm leaved roofing. The club house provides the backdrop to the 16th, a par 3 of 140 yards playing to an island green, as it does to a very difficult finishing par 4 of 486 yards. Get the ball on the fairway then master a long rescue club flighting the ball first over a pond and then drawing it over a beach-sized bunker. With a little luck the ball might just carry to the top of the bunker and then hop onto the green. Two putts mean one of the most satisfying pars of the trip, especially if a 19th hole gallery is gathered on the veranda. A round at Bali Hai means you’re in good company: Clinton, Obama, Samuel L Jackson,

Adam Sandler and U2 are among a long list of celebrities who have walked the verdant fairways of Las Vegas’ only course on The Strip. Another big name to leave a big impression on a Las Vegas club is Tiger Woods who scorched round Rio Secco in a course record 64. He had been a regular at Rio Secco because his former coach, Butch Harmon, runs a golf school at the club. He was obviously in a rich vein of form as a week later he won the 2000 US Open at Pebble Beach by 15 shots. This is golf in the real Wild West. Fairways are hewn out of the desert with huge boulders and rocks running alongside. It’s the rough, but not as we now it. Fortunately my transatlantic golfing pals informed me that rather than smashing a club and a body we should drop out onto the fairway with a one shot penalty. Can we try that in the Saturday medal please? The course is great fun with a number of very difficult par 3s which involve clipping the ball over ravines onto shallow, cliff-hugging greens, framed by prickly cacti and shrubs. A feature of the course is the number of holes that funnel into small greens below sheer cliffs of rock and boulders. “This is where the Indians would round the cowboys up,” drawled Dave. “There was no escape when they were down there and the Indians would just pick them off.” All the courses in the area are worth playing. They all have unusual features but have one in common: they are beautifully maintained, which is an incredible achievement given the lack of rain (1.81 inches in 2014). Our final course was Bear’s Best, the theme of which is a collection of the best holes designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course again is great fun and shouts Vegas with its collection of different holes just as The Strip itself features a myriad of different themes such as Egyptian, French or Italian. When the sun goes down and The Strip lights up it’s time to savour the attractions of another city that never sleeps. Again, suspend

reality as you see a laser image of Gordon Ramsay and his new restaurant flashed onto a mock Arc De Triomphe. There’s a pirate ship on one side of the vast boulevard, a gondola on another and further down The Strip there’s a huge hot air balloon. Many of the older, landmark hotels such as The Venetian, New York New York and Caesar’s Palace are theme based but more recently the trend has been to develop more luxury brands such as The Bellagio, Delano and Aria. Casinos are still a major part of these establishments but they now offer more, such as the wonderful dancing

regularly performing. We were lucky enough to see America’s Got Talent winner Mat Franco and his array of impressive card tricks. The show came after a trip on Vegas’ own ferris wheel – The High Roller at The Linq. Bigger than the London Eye, it gave us great views of the dazzling city made even more enjoyable by drinks served at a bar in one of the capsules. If you’re not golfing in Las Vegas there’s plenty to do in the day. A helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon is a must with its spectacular views over the Nevada desert and The Hoover Dam. Take a trip downtown

Bali Hai viewed from above

fountains outside The Bellagio and impressive shopping complexes. Top class dining is also a feature of Vegas with celebrity chefs having venues across the city. Try these for an eclectic selection: Rivea at Delano,Yardbird at The Venetian, Guy Fieri’s Las Vegas Kitchen at The Linq and the Triple George Grill at Downtown Grand – famous for its delicious steaks. Nightlife doesn’t end with a meal: enjoy cocktails in exotic bars such as The Skyfall Lounge at Delano or a show with such stars as Rod Stewart, Elton John and Celine Dion

to the Freemont Street area: a more earthy but vibrant atmosphere than The Strip and home to a one of the best museums I’ve visited: The Mob Museum. Sit in an electric chair, be part of a prohibition trial and find out about Sinatra’s apparent connection to JFK’s assassination. And of course, don’t forget the shopping malls – that’s when reality does kick in.

SS Chesterfield Champions

The Chesterfield Retail Awards return this month. Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, looks at what’s in store.

E

very month I write this column and I have the same problem – what not to include. There is so much positive news happening in Chesterfield that I find myself forced to cherry-pick the very best bits. The return of the increasingly popular Chesterfield Retail Awards features high up the list for this month. Now in its third year, the event will recognise the town’s very best retailers and once again we were spoilt for choice with more nominations than ever. This year, because of the demand for the event, we have had to move to a larger space, at the Winding Wheel, for the awards and we also welcome the new Peak FM breakfast show hosts Stu and Cat as hosts. Not only are Stu and Cat new to Peak FM, but also new to Chesterfield – what better way to get to know our retail scene and the many characters within it than to host these awards? It is no surprise that once again the awards ceremony is hotly anticipated. I’ve been part of Chesterfield for a lot of years –

as an investor, business owner and chair of Destination Chesterfield, and last year, I felt proud and excited for the town’s future when I saw so many people come together and celebrate the retail sector. This follows on from the recent ‘Celebrate’ event, which was also a very successful, well attended gathering of local businesses, from which the feedback has been tremendous. Make no mistake, our retail sector is thriving. We have an excellent mix of independent and high street shops, stores and market traders that bring people into the town and choose us as a shopping destination over neighbouring cities and towns. Retailers will shortly benefit from the completion of the exciting new Derby University campus in the former St Helena building. Opening in September it will attract hundreds of students and staff each year. I am also delighted to learn that there will be business incubation units within the campus which I hope local entrepreneurs will look to take advantage of. These units will further add

to the two innovation centres at Dunston and Tapton, both of which are invaluable to the SME community giving many businesses a foundation for growth. The message is clear – if you’re an entrepreneur then Chesterfield is the place to be. The town has both the commercial property and customer base to support growth. It also has opportunity; all too often we hear about negative issues in the media but, rest assured, the future of Chesterfield is very positive.
