SS Flooring
Call the professionals It’s the winning blend of friendly service and competitive prices that makes Layers Flooring so successful
W
ith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice
SOUTHSIDE 6
was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice.
“Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards.
“We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.”

Happy birthday Lily B Five years after she took the plunge and opted for a new career, Rachael Fleming’s boutique is going strong.
L
ily B is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month and everyone is invited to join the celebrations on Saturday 14 November. The boutique, which sells designer handbags, jewellery and scarves, was established in 2010 by Rachael Fleming and, to mark the occasion, she is inviting all customers to join her for fizz and nibbles. Rachael previously worked for Aviva, but after 25 years she decided it was time for a new challenge. When a space became available at The Forge it provided the perfect opportunity for Rachel to be near her daughter at Dronfield School. “The Forge is such a wonderful place to be; the customers here are so lovely. I feel blessed that I am able to do this,” Rachael said. Finding the right name for a business is never easy, but Rachael chose to name the shop after her grandmother, Lily. “She loved jewellery and nice things, so it seemed like the perfect fit,” Rachael explained. “And the ‘B’ simply stands for boutique.” Lily B proved to be such a success that Rachael made the move from outside The Forge into a bigger unit inside two years ago. The boutique now stocks many brands and products including Tula, Storm, Pilgrim, Tresor, One Wish, Radley and Kangol. Lily B is also
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
proud to stock Nordby, a jewellery brand new to the UK from Denmark. The boutique is an ideal place to find special gifts for your loved ones, especially when you’re searching for something alternative to what is available on the high street. While Lily B’s fantastic products have no doubt played a part in the boutique’s success, Rachael’s passion for her business and friendly service is what keeps customers returning. "I always smile when I come to work. The Forge is a magical place and the people who come here are all so friendly. I would like to thank all of my customers for making Lily B such a success,” she says. Anyone who visits the store will receive a
warm welcome from Rachael and she is on hand to offer advice and guidance. Visit Lily B today to browse the stock and pick up a treat for yourself or a loved one – and don’t forget to pop in on the 14 November to celebrate Lily B’s five-year anniversary. Opening times: 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday and will be opening Sundays throughout November and December 11am-4pm. SS Eating Out
Come on in You’re sure of a warm welcome at the Hyde Park Inn where the atmosphere is buzzing and the menu is full of delicious homemade food. Words: Phoebe Seymour
I
t can be awkward when you’re an outof-towner visiting a local pub. There tends to be a clique and you can feel the unwelcome stares from the regular clientele as soon as you enter the room. But at Hyde Park Inn in Dronfield, there’s none of this. Owners Tom and Vee have been running the pub for almost a year and have already managed to establish a mouth-watering menu and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. On this particular Thursday evening, this traditional pub with its contemporary décor was full of families and groups of friends with young children on high chairs and dogs under tables, creating a very relaxed and social vibe. There’s also a fantastic range of homemade pub grub on their menu and specials board, as well as a dedicated steak menu for Meaty Mondays and a varied seafood menu for Fishy Fridays. Now is the time to plan your Christmas party and Hyde Park Inn are currently advertising their festive menu and taking bookings. I started with the battered king prawns accompanied by a sweet chilli sauce, and my dining companion went with the garlic mushrooms. The batter on my prawns was light and bubbly and surprisingly non-greasy, whilst my companion’s mushrooms were presented in aromatic garlic oil with warm crusty bread on the side.
SOUTHSIDE 22
A great test when it comes to pub food is the classic pie, so for my main course I chose the homemade steak and ale pie of the day. Topped with a soft crust, filled with tender pieces of meat in a rich gravy and accompanied by chunky chips with a small jug of thick gravy, this certainly passed with flying colours. My companion went with another homemade option, the chilli and rice. With a tomato sauce and a lingering spicy after taste, this dish is a great way to warm up on those cold winter evenings. I finished off with Belgian waffles served with cool vanilla ice cream and lashings of warm chocolate sauce whilst my companion had the highly recommended gingerbread cheesecake. With its crunchy base, melt-in-the-mouth cream layer and golden crunchy toppings, my dining companion was not disappointed. After complimenting the chef, who turned out to be Vee, her partner and coowner Tom invited us to take part in the Thursday night quiz. But, as tempting as this was, my companion and I were full, content and ready for home. If Hyde Park Inn’s Christmas menu is as delicious as this one, a festive get- together here may well be on the cards. Whether it’s on your door step or a drive away, it’s worth visiting this friendly pub which is sure to warm both your stomach and your heart.

SS Eating Out
The beast unleashed
It was a man v sausage showdown at Swanky Frank’s… and the hot dog won. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns
I
n a quiet corner of Woodseats, set back from the busy Chesterfield Road, there lies a diner that, despite its discreet location, manages to draw in crowds from all over Sheffield. And, as my partner Ben and I discovered on a typically bustling Friday night, Swanky Frank’s’ secret is no real secret at all – great big plates of American food to satisfy even the hardiest appetites have been going down a storm for years. Ben had clearly missed the memo about Swanky’s famously huge portion sizes. While I knowingly tucked into a carb-light starter of chicken wings – just the right level of spice and a lovely Caesar dip to dunk them in – he eagerly wolfed down a great big pile of pulled pork nachos. The plate groaned with tortilla chips smothered in sour cream, guacamole, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and homemade pulled pork and I wondered how he was ever going to manage another two courses. Oh how I laughed when, minutes into our mains, a waiter came over to check how Ben was proceeding with his giant hot dog – a 12inch, 6oz pork sausage, piled high with chilli and onions and loaded into a freshly baked bun. The reason for the waiter’s interest? Diners brave enough to polish off every last morsel of this beast are awarded a medal for their efforts. Needless to say, he failed spectacularly. Over on my side of the table, my halo slipped clean off as I tucked into a calzone with vigour – all thoughts ofbeing healthy long forgotten. This traditional folded-over pizza base was fit to burst with tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red onion and ham and topped with a rich Napoli tomato sauce, and I enjoyed every sinful mouthful.Yes, there are healthier options on the menu, but who really visits Swanky’s craving a salad?
SOUTHSIDE 24
Grease played on loop in the background and the stereo kicked out both old and new classics (think Dire Straits followed by Kings of Leon). The scene was very much set and a Lynchburg Lemonade followed by a bottle of Brooklyn lager completed our
authentic America diner experience. Well, almost. I’ve seen enough American films (this screening of Grease was perhaps my 20th viewing) to know that nothing says diner quite like an ice-cream to share – served in a tall glass with two long spoons, you know the drill. It’s the nearest thing to romance you can find here and we looked every bit the stereotype; jostling each other’s spoons out of the way to scoop up more cream/ice-cream/strawberries than the other. If you’re looking for a good time, a buzzing atmosphere and a great choice of deliciously wicked food, there are few more perfect locations than Swanky Frank’s. But if you want to take home one of those coveted medals, I’d advise you to skip lunch. And maybe breakfast, too, come to think of it.

The clear favourites From small repairs to full replacements, C Clear Glass & Glazing Services can keep your windows in top condition.
A
s cool autumn days set in and the nights get colder, you may be noticing just how draughty your home has become. Even when the weather is mild, gaps in window frames and doors can whistle and make a light breeze sound like gale force winds This is a common problem, but one that can be easily rectified. If you have been putting off repairs because of the expense that often accompanies such jobs, C Clear Glass & Glazing is the solution. "People don't realise that window and door repairs don't need to cost the earth,” Explains owner of C Clear Glass & Glazing Chris Wallace. “We're just as happy to repair a broken hinge as we are to fit a full window. Small repairs are our speciality." Having worked for other glazing companies as a glass and double glazing
specialist for many years, Chris realised there was a gap in the market for repairs to uPVC and aluminium doors and uPVC, aluminium and wooden windows. Whether you need new rubber seals, handles, hinges, locks or replacement double glazed units, in fact any problem with your doors and windows, Chris and his team are the ones to call. Run by Chris, his wife Louise and his eldest son Conner, C Clear Glass & Glazing is a very family-orientated business. Chris has worked in the industry for over 25 years and his youngest son, Mason, is the latest team member to learn the family trade, working for the business on his days off from college. And it is not just hands-on expertise that the local business provides. When it comes to excellent customer service, Chris believes it's the little things about C Clear Glass & Glazing that make a big difference. "We try to do what the average company
doesn't. Punctuality, friendliness and honesty is what we base the business around,” he says. “We will always be on time, honest and upfront. We also think it's important to be respectful and to use shoe covers when entering a customer’s home.” So, whether you need your home fitted with new windows and doors or have problems with your existing windows or doors, contact Chris at C Clear Glass & Glazing for a free, no obligation quote. A successful year for young dancer Isobel Isobel Elston, the daughter of Langsett Cycles’ Andy Elston, is a member of the DanceDaze Dance School in Dronfield. For the last four years, Isobel has danced in a crew called The Business, a group of nine girls aged between 13 and 16. They have more than 160 solo/duo trophies between them after competing in many regional events. Each year they have qualified for the World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow and have finished in fourth place, despite moving up into more advanced categories. This year, they were moved up to the top under18 advance category, which made their fourth place even more impressive. Last year, aged 13, Isobel and her close friend Ellie-Rose Pickering also entered the World under 14 intermediate duos category and finished in first place. The girls had to train even harder this year in order to defend their world title in the higher under-16 category. Their hard work once again paid off as they were again crowned world champions.

Lamborghini’s Huracan blows its top From supercars to family saloons… the latest motoring news with Jordan Cutforth
Good news for all Premiership footballers, Lamborghini has finally released a convertible version of the Huracan – itself replacing the Gallardo, the most popular model in the car maker’s history. With its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Huracan Spyder will be powered by the same 602hp 5.2-litre V10 engine as found in the coupe. This means a 201mph top speed and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds. The soft-top roof can be lowered in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. As with the coupe, it’ll come with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Expect a starting price of around £190,000 when the car arrives in showrooms next year.

Porsche goes strictly turbo
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI,Volkswagen has produced a stand-alone special edition. Dubbed the GTI Clubsport, it comes with a different exterior design and some improved power statistics. With a more prominent front bumper design, new side sills, a redesigned rear diffuser and a multi-part roof spoiler, the Clubsport certainly stands out from the rest of the VW group’s range with its very aggressive appearance. These alterations also provide meaningful downforce so it should handle crisper too. Power from the 2.0-litre turbo unit has been increased to 261hp or to 286hp on full throttle acceleration. 60mph comes in 6.0 seconds for the manual car or 5.9 seconds with the DSG auto ‘box. Consumption stats are 40.9mpg (160g/km) and 42.2 mpg (155g/km) respectively
The big news is that the Porsche 911 will no longer have naturallyaspirated engines. Instead, they’ll all be turbocharged. This is for efficiency reasons and one which was ultimately going to happen at some point. Fear not though; power has increased by around 20hp and the straight-six scream synonymous of the high-revving naturallyaspirated engines hasn’t been affected. All 911 Carrera models now come with 3.0-litre units. The Carrera produces figures of 370hp and 332 lb ft of torque. The Carrera S produces 420hp and 369lb ft. The quickest 0-62mph times are 4.2 seconds and 3.9 seconds respectively. The 911 can now achieve up to 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 169g/km of CO2. Prices start from £76,412. Launches in December.
Setting the pace Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Jaguar F-Pace looks to take the crown from the Porsche Macan for top honours in the medium-sized luxury SUV marketplace. Not only does it take heavy inspiration from the F-Type sports car in terms of its pleasingly eye-catching appearance, but its interior rivals that found in the most luxurious of SUVs, including Volvo’s XC90 and BMW’s X5. It will be powered by a 178hp 2.0-litre diesel, a 296hp 3.0-litre diesel or a 375hp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol unit. Models with the 2.0-litre diesel can be rear or four-wheel drive and come with six-speed manual transmissions. The rest come with Jaguar’s excellent and well-proven XF automatic transmission and all-wheel drive platforms. Prices start from £34,170. Available to order now.
Better all-round
The Megane is one of Renault’s most popular models, so it’s big news to announce that Renault has created an all-new model. The new Megane is 64mm longer and 25mm lower than the previous model with a 28mm longer wheelbase. This all aids with interior space and the boot can now hold up to 434litres of luggage – second largest in this sector.
SOUTHSIDE 48
With a more distinctive appearance and more luxurious interior ,including the likes of a 8.7inch touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT instrument display and a full-colour head-up display, the Megane is more appealing than ever. It’s more economical too, with figures that can top 85.6mpg and 86g/km of CO2. A diesel hybrid will also be introduced after the car goes on sale next summer.

SS Chesterfield Champions
Chesterfield is living up to its potential, says Peter Swallow, Chair, Destination Chesterfield.
M
ore good investment news arrived in Chesterfield recently with the announcement that a planning application has been submitted to turn the former Co-op department store into a £20million hotel, restaurants and leisure development. I am delighted that the potential of Chesterfield has, once again, been recognised by investors. It is large-scale developments in the town centre such as this, coupled with our thriving independent sector, which will help make us a go-to destination for shoppers and tourists. November has been designated the month where we hope to do exactly the same for the town’s manufacturing sector with Made in Chesterfield. The festival has two aims; to attract manufacturing and engineering companies to invest in the town and create jobs, and to encourage more youngsters to consider a career in manufacturing. Last year, Made in Chesterfield only ran for a week, however it was credited with introducing more than 400 young people to careers within the sector.
Thanks to partnerships Destination Chesterfield has fostered with schools, companies within the sector, Derbyshire Education Business Partnership, Natwest, Chesterfield College, Derbyshire County Council, Chesterfield Borough Council, Placing Futures and Positive 4 Young People, this year more young people than ever will discover first-hand the employment opportunities and the number of varied and exciting roles available within manufacturing and engineering. If your school, child or company would like to get involved with Made in Chesterfield, you can view the programme of events here www.chesterfield.co.uk/made Attracting young people to the sector is essential if Sheffield City Region (SCR) is to achieve its vision of developing a Modern Manufacturing and Technology Growth Area. Chesterfield’s Enterprise Zone at Markham Vale is already playing an important role in attracting investment to the area and events like Made in Chesterfield are contributing further in ensuring there is a ready workforce to enable SCR to achieve this vision.
We’re also taking a similar approach to the town’s hospitality sector through the Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards. Without a ready workforce for this important element of the economy proposals for developments such as the Co-op would be a non-starter. Each year, Destination Chesterfield partners with Chesterfield College to showcase the skills of the young people about to enter the hospitality sector. Not only does the College sponsor the awards, it provides the venue for the awards but, most importantly, its own students cater and serve the entire event. After the success of last year’s awards evening at the College it came as no surprise that tickets for the 2015 awards sold out weeks before the event, prompting us to increase numbers to the absolute maximum.
