EATING OUT
A taste of time travel HANNAH SANDERS STEPS BACK INTO A QUIETER, MORE RELAXED ERA AT THE VINTAGE TEAROOMS. rriving at Vintage Tearooms, we were greeted by an eye-catching, intricately painted mural of an oldfashioned town, depicting a horse drawn carriage, a church spire and silhouettes of townsfolk, expanding across the side of the building. With the wooden wheelbarrow full of wildflowers, vintage bike and basket balanced against the wall, old-fashioned box with a detailed tea pot drawn inside, along with a rustic sign above the door, it was like taking a step back in time. Inside, I immediately fell for the décor, consisting of mismatched furniture, vintage street nameplates, fairy lights hung from wooden beams, tea pots as lampshades, union jacks hung from the ceiling along with a host of antique knick knacks dotted around. The reference to the good old days didn’t stop there, as the servers greeted us with ‘m ’lady’ and ‘good sir’, and were dressed in white shirts, retro aprons and flat caps. We started our lunch with a Red Berry loose leaf tea (£2.20), served in a delicately
A
painted floral china pot, for me and a Franklin & Sons dandelion and burdock (£2.20) for my partner. For mains, I chose the goat’s cheese and caramelised onion tart (£6.25) and Franklin & Sons strawberry and raspberry drink (£2.20). The tart was served with a generous portion of fresh salad and delightfully creamy coleslaw. The pastry shell was heavenly when paired with the sweet tang of the onions and richness of the goat cheese. It was the balance of these rustic flavours that gave this dish a bitter sweet depth. My dining companion opted for the lasagne (£6.95), which was served in a bright orange stoneware dish, with cheesy garlic bread and a side salad nestled on the plate. It was the perfect ratio of soft buttery pasta, juicy layers of ground beef and seasoned tomato sauce, topped with a delightfully crisp cheese crust. After a brief respite, we sampled some of the delicious homemade desserts. My partner opted for the indulgent salted caramel cake (£2.95), and a latte (£2.40), whilst I chose
one of their best sellers - the champagne and raspberry cake (£2.95) and a soya latte (£2.40). The pink cake was light in texture, spread with a layer of rich topping and sprinkled with dried raspberries. Vintage Tearooms is a sanctuary, a place to celebrate vintage accessories and furniture and a place to take solace from your busy lives. RACHEL MARTIN IS BOWLED OVER BY A FEAST OF TASTY TAPAS. he last time we ate tapas it was September in Portugal, the temperature was 30 degrees at 9pm and we were sitting almost alone on a street outside an Iberian delicatessen – I’ll never forget that first taste of patatas bravas, its softness, the depth of the potato, the love that ran through its eggy veins. September in Sheffield. It’s eight degrees at 9pm – so we opt for a seat inside – and we’re far from alone as we waltz into Cubana and find the place swarming with frivolity. But could it be as memorable as that night in Portugal? A backdrop of sweeping sax solos instantly seduced me – and half of the city it seemed – and despite the clamouring crowds inside, the staff were as cool as the place itself. “Just grab a drink and in ten minutes, there'll be a table free,” our waiter reassured me. And he was right. A Bramble cocktail later (£6.75) – a perfectly balanced homage to 1980s London, blending Bombay Sapphire gin, lemon, sugar and a drizzle of crème de mûre – and there’s space for two in the dimly-lit two-storey dining area. You’ll find seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes on the menu; we chose some classic options: tortilla Española – wedges of traditional Spanish omelette made with free range eggs, potatoes and onions; Pan y Puré de aceitunas – black olive and mixed herb tapenade served with slices of toasted focaccia bread; and mozzarella y jamón – fresh melted
T
mozzarella pieces wrapped in crispy Serrano ham. The dishes arrived in dribs and drabs within minutes. First up came a teeming bowl of champiñones con queso de cabra – mixed mushrooms and fresh spinach leaves – with albóndigas, Cubana’s famous meatballs made with fresh minced beef and coriander served in a tomato sauce, hard on its heels. The mushrooms were gorgeous, a mellow and sweet heaven topped by both crunchy and chewy goat’s cheese – a dish you just can’t help picking at again and again – and the hearty albóndigas were enough on their own to make us think of sunnier climes. Next up was the asado de verduras – a selection of fresh roasted Mediterranean vegetables tossed olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which made them gorgeously juicy. And it’d be plain rude to have tapas and not go for the patatas a lo pobre – small chunks of succulent and crisp sautéed potato, lightly spiced and cooked with onions, red peppers and garlic. The dish of the day for me was the cordero en vino tinto – tender lamb pieces slowly braised in punchy red wine. No two ways about it: it was a show-stopper, each mouthful in turn an outburst of onion and fresh thyme. We divided the final dishes between us – gambas pill pill, asado de verduras and chorizo – politely squabbling over who was going to eat the last, still sizzling pan-fried Spanish sausage, and found that 11 plates
between two of us, washed down by a long and refreshing El Oso (£7) – Beefeater gin, a splash of Sauvignon Blanc, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, apple and lemon – was just right. But with more than 30 different dishes to choose from, your curiosity may lead you to order more as you go along. Only a madman would have eaten anything else after this feast, but, as a connoisseur of a buttery biscuit base, I had to try the beautifully soft, baked dulce de leche and Baileys cheesecake, topped with a dusting of chocolate sauce. And for that alone I'd come back. Every single plate was completely emptied – that’s testament enough to what we thought of the meal – and on a dreary September's evening, it was all too easy to think ourselves back in another part of the world entirely. The deluxe tapas set menu is £23.50 per person. Cubana Tapas Bar Unit 4 Leopold Square, Sheffield, S1 2JG Tel: 0114 276 0475 www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

HALLOWEEN
HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS GO BACK THOUSANDS OF YEARS. PHOEBE SEYMOUR INVESTIGATES OUR ENDURING FASCINATION WITH THIS ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS SPOOKY . . .
HALLOWEEN
here was a time, around 40 years ago, when you’d be struggling to find anyone trick or treating on your street. And if you did, they wouldn’t be particularly dressed up. If anything they’d be wearing a black bin bag, carrying a turnip jack-o’-lantern and rattling a tin of coins. How Halloween has changed… Nowadays, our American cousins’ influence can be seen everywhere. On the weeks leading up to Halloween, you’ll find mountains of pumpkins in the supermarkets and rail after rail of fancy dress costumes on the high street – some of which are not even scary. Travel back in time 2,000 years and the celebration of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. PreChristian Celts were agricultural people and were determined by the seasons. Samhain marked the harvest at the end of summer and the beginning of the darker and colder winter season, as well as symbolising a time when the boundary between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest. The Celts believed that on the night of 31 October, ghosts would visit the mortal world and large bonfires would be lit in every village to ward off any evil spirits that may also pass through. When the Romans invaded in the decades that followed, Britain was influenced by the Christian calendar. With the arrival of Saint Augustine from Rome in 597 came All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints Day, when people would remember those who had died for their beliefs. Originally celebrated on 13 May, Pope Gregory moved the All Hallows’ feast to 1 November in the 8th century. It is thought that in doing so, he was attempting to replace or merge the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead with a church-approved celebration. The night of Samhain therefore became known as All-hallows-even, before eventually being shortened to Hallowe’en, then finally to Halloween. Traditional games such as bobbing for apples and hollowing out vegetables for lanterns from the ancient celebration of Samhain still exist today, as does the idea of dressing up in scary costumes, but in recent years the American celebration of Halloween has also heavily influenced Britain. British immigrants may have taken their traditions over to America in the 19th century, but it was during the 20th century that the celebration changed shape again here. The current use of pumpkins in the UK is a relatively modern trend, which along with trick or treating and un-scary fancy dress, have been adopted from our US cousins. Although the UK still lags behind America when it comes to embracing the modern allsinging all-dancing celebration of Halloween, we are certainly catching up. Retail spending in the UK on Halloween was an astounding £310 million in 2016 compared with just £12 million in 2001. Goodbye black bin bags,
T
DERBYSHIRE’S MOST HAUNTED Bolsover Castle Built on the site of a medieval fortress, Bolsover Castle is an extraordinary 17th century aristocratic retreat, said to be so haunted the English Heritage staff keep a ‘ghost book’ to record reports of paranormal activity. There have been sightings of a female ghost in the kitchen area and a child who appears in a fireplace before disappearing. Strange noises are often heard, smells appear for no reason and some visitors have reported hearing the sound of horse’s hooves.

Saints Augustine Church in the 1980s. A family living in the property at the time experienced mysterious burning smells, sudden chills and an eerie grey mist creeping from the corners of a bedroom. Dennis Fearn, who lived at the house with his wife and two sons, reported being kept awake by a peculiar scratching noise at the foot of the bed and a feeling that something was trying to crawl up the bed. However, ghost hunter Mark Vernon fears the exorcism failed and the restless spirit remains at the property.
A6 towards Rowsley There have been a number of reports of ghost planes in Derbyshire, with people often identifying the plane as a Douglas Dakota – flown by the RAF during the Second World War. It is claimed that a Dakota did in fact crash in this area some 70 years ago. One eye witness is Pam Orridge. A few years ago, she and her son were driving from Darley Dale to Rowsley and a plane flew so low, they thought it would crash into them.
hello store-bought, hi-tech witch costume – or maybe just a friendly Spongebob costume. There’s nothing wrong with Halloween celebrations getting bigger. On the contrary, it’s great that this celebration has survived so many years, but when 31 October is just a glorified costume party without the scary element. And when sugar-fuelled children have tantrums on strangers’ doorsteps because they can only offer a few coppers or a digestive, or don’t answer the door at all, we have lost sight of what Halloween is all about. It shouldn’t be about scaring people into hiding or stocking up on sweets to appease the trick or treaters, it should be an inclusive celebration of our agricultural and spooky heritage. So by all means, carve up some vegetables, tell ghost stories. Just don’t get upset with those who would rather not spend their month’s wages on party decorations. After all, it’s not as big a deal as Christmas. Well, not yet anyway.

Safe in the knowledge DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT THIS WINTER – CHOOSE ONE OF THE MANY SERVICE PLANS AVAILABLE AT BLUEFLAME. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. s winter sets in, it is time to turn our attention to our boilers in preparation for the colder months. As the chilly winter evenings continue to get colder, it’s important to ensure your heating system is in working order, so you can escape to a haven of snugly warmth. Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-based gas service company that specialises in providing annual service plans for central heating systems. Established over 15 years ago, this professional family-run business has over 50 years’ combined experience in the industry. Heating and hot water are things that we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise this until something goes wrong. When it does, it’s incredibly frustrating – and often very expensive. Service plans are a way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments. They help to ensure someone is always on hand to help if things do go wrong. With any boiler, the parts and labour charges that come with ad hoc repairs can be very costly. The advantage of a service plan is the peace of mind it provides – as payments

are made on a monthly basis you’ll have nothing to worry about, safe in the knowledge that there’ll be someone on hand to fix your system when it fails. Something that often discourages us from agreeing contracts is the small print – but there are no such worries with Blueflame. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12 point font,” says company director John Beevers. “You won’t have to trawl through a book of details!” Blueflame offers several different levels of cover, but the basic packages are silver, which covers boilers, or gold, which also covers the full central heating system. Compared to the larger national firms, prices are very competitive.
Blueflame specialise in service plans, but that’s by no means all they do. They offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and power flushing to mention just a few. Of course, when it comes to plumbing and gas businesses, the most important thing isn’t the services on offer but how trustworthy and reliable the company is. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Blueflame are – they’re Gas Safe registered, and members of Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme. What’s even more impressive is Blueflame’s fabulous reputation. They’ve got a database full of satisfied customers – many of whom return to this friendly company again and again. Blueflame are on hand to help all year round, so contact them today to be safe in the knowledge that you’ve already planned a cosy winter. IN BRIEF
Grassthorpe Paws take the four-legged approach to Night Strider success
Places for People celebrates Friday 1 September marked the first anniversary of the new Graves Health and Sports Centre. Work began in April 2015 to transform the former Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre into the £16m state-of-the-art health facility. Funding was provided by Sheffield City Council, Sport England, Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), British Gymnastics, National Centre of Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), Public Health England and Places for People Leisure. With over 3,500 fitness members, Graves has made quite an impact in the local community offering a wide range of activities for people to get active, come together and improve their health. Sheffield contract manager Alex Greaves says: “We’re overwhelmed by the success of Graves Health and Sports Centre. We’ve had a fantastic year and I would like to thank all our loyal customers and staff members. For more information visit www.graveshealthandsportscentre.org or call 0114 283 9900.
Four legs should prove better than two for canine friends the Grassthorpe Paws as they take up the challenge of the St Luke’s Hospice Night Strider Pooches Basil, Dill and Max are putting their best paws forward along with owners Teresa and Martin Loxley and Julie Goude, who live in Gleadless. Night Strider – sponsored by Gripple – is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that aims to raise more than £130,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. Starting out from Tudor Square in Sheffield city centre as darkness falls on Saturday October 7, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and then back to the Tudor Square finish line. Having taken part in the 10k version of the event last year, Teresa, Martin and Julie are this year planning to put themselves to the full half marathon walking challenge. To support the dogs and their owners visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/teresa-loxley6 and the individual entry fee is £25 - to sign up simply visit www.nightsrider.co.uk

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS
THIS TOWN IS NOTHING LIKE A GHOST TOWN, SAYS PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD. ow that summer has come to a sad but inevitable end, our thoughts are probably turning towards Christmas – with all this involves including pantomime, nights out, light switch-ons, and shopping. There’s been much gossip recently about Chesterfield’s shop occupancy, or possible lack thereof. This is something I feel is a very important topic, but discussion should take place with consideration to the official statistics. How often do we hear that Chesterfield is
N
turning into a ghost town? It’s easy to see why this might be the case – as has always been the ‘norm’ some shops are closing, then becoming different businesses, and change is always around the corner. But is this to say that this is a reflection on Chesterfield specifically? Or more so the nation, and our spending habits as a country? According to the latest shop occupancy figures, this is a national issue. Chesterfield actually has (as of June 2017) 7.06 per cent shop vacancies. Compare this figure to the national average of 12.5 per cent, and it’s clear that as a town, we’re doing well. Change is something that is not always welcomed, and when shop fronts go through the transition from one company to another, it’s understandable that people are daunted. But these changes are helping many a small business to flourish in Chesterfield. Adorn Jewellers, multi-award winning jewellery boutique, is opening an additional store in Bakewell after their continuing success at their store in the Shambles. Both BabyLuv and Geeks Headquarters started life on Chesterfield Market and have since expanded and moved into premises within the town. These are but two examples of successful
businesses growing from a ‘standing start’ in the town, and it’s a very similar story in the food and drink sector. Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards showcase perfectly the vast range of dining and drinking ventures in Chesterfield. Northern Tea Merchants, Theresa Lambarelli’s, and Granny Mary’s are all finalists in the Food Producer of the Year category. These are food producers that started trading from home, making and blending in their kitchens, and now selling nationally – some even worldwide. The town’s food and drink sector is unrecognisable to how it was 10 years ago, in the best possible way. There is something to cater for absolutely every taste, and the struggle to narrow down the Best Newcomer category at the Food and Drink Awards to just three entries each year illustrates this. My message, in essence, is this. Before we speak negatively about the town for having vacant shop units, and send out the message that perhaps we should all travel to other shopping centres nearby, perhaps we should be looking at the bigger picture. Not only does Chesterfield sit well above the average shop occupancy on a national level, but the town will only ever improve if it receives investment, not only from the council, and the businesses, but the customers too. This year, when you are thinking about doing your Christmas shopping and planning your nights out, ask not what Chesterfield can do for you, but what you can do for it. Your custom keeps small businesses thriving. Shop, eat and drink local!
