James Lewis of Bamfords

Two of the best ICONIC WAR HEROES EFFECTS AND PAINTINGS BY LEADING ARTIST GO UNDER THE HAMMER AT BAMFORDS SALE. ctober at Bamfords sees sale highlights of two twentieth century icons. The first, one of Derbyshire’s greatest living artists, the other the most famous British fighter pilot of all time. On 23 October 94-year-old Derby artist Terence Storey will be selling paintings for thef inal time. He can boast works of art in collections as diverse as those of the United Nations and The Royal Family’s. He painted his last picture earlier this year and his entire studio and gallery of works goes under the hammer, including Derbyshire scenes, marinescapes and others. The name Douglas Bader, along with the likes of Scott of the Antarctic, Donald Campbell and Florence Nightingale, is one that every school child knows, as a figure of great British heroism. The fighter pilot who

O

lost his legs in a tragic accident, aged 21, fought in the Battle of Britain wearing prosthetic limbs. Bamfords military sale on 31 October boasts a collection of Bader memorabilia, including a very personal and moving letter written from his hospital bed detailing the crash and the subsequent operations, together with photographs of the crash, Bader’s squadron flight ring, cigarette case, matchbox case and pages from an album of both personal and crash related photographs. This is part of a specialist Militaria sale where Bamfords are welcoming entries of weapons, medals, uniforms and other military related objects. If vendors wish to do so, they may donate all or part of their sale proceeds to SSAFA, Help for Heroes or the National Memorial Arboretum if they choose.

The Rowsley Saleroom at the Peak Village Shopping Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5:30pm. For advice from James Lewis and the team call 01629 730920 or meet them at one of the free valuation days every Thursday afternoon at the saleroom or Kelham Island Museum on the first Tuesday of each month from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Are you prepared? WRITE YOUR WILL NOW AND HELP SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TO CONTINUE ITS VITAL WORK.

Dear Reader, s a mum of two I am constantly prepared with a snack or a spare piece of clothing! We all plan for the day, week, special occasions but how many of us are prepared for the future? That’s why I’m writing to you today. My daughter Matilda is three years old and my son Ailbe has just turned 18 months old. They keep me on my toes but I know I'm very lucky. I think about their next birthday and look back at pictures of when they were born. The future seems very far away and isn't something I am prepared for, it’s not on my list of priorities but I know it is inevitable. I don't know what my children will become but I hope they will feel loved. When the time comes, I want to help other families from all walks of life, as they’ll need the help of Sheffield Children's Hospital too. Some of these children are probably not even born yet

A

but could be our future doctors, teachers, leaders and of course a twinkle in their parents’ eye. Working at The Children's Hospital Charity I've met families who have had their worlds turned upside down. It's a testament to our hospital that these families always remember the incredible care they've received. You really don't appreciate until you really need it. I’ll be honest, I keep putting off writing a will but now seems as good time to finally get it done. I’ll definitely be writing one this year and I hope you’ll join me in leaving a legacy that will help generations to come. Thank you for your time,

Katie PS: Irwin Mitchell offer a discount will writing service if you are thinking of writing a will and they’ll make an immediate donation too.

Confetti

THE ULTIMATE

CHECKLIST With so many aspects to think about, planning a wedding can be one of our most stressful life events – but it doesn’t have to be. Rhiana Hughes talks you through the seven most important parts of your big day and how to tackle them.

Confetti

Venue While it used to be that churches were the only venues considered when it came to planning a wedding, this has completely changed today. You might want to stick to tradition and walk down the aisle at a beautiful chapel. But if that’s not for you there are a wealth of other venues and locations where you can tie the knot. If you are brave enough to trust the British weather, consider an outdoor wedding incorporating natural colours and decoration into your big day. For those who don’t want to leave the success of their wedding up to Mother Nature, look into more modern venues with an industrial feel. Use copper and warm neutral tones for a gritty, earthy feel, and lighten up the space with fairy lights and light floral arrangements.

Flowers A bigger decision than it may first seem, choosing the flowers for your big day is an important and sometimes tricky part of wedding planning. You might have a favourite flower but will it fit in with the theme and colour scheme of your wedding? Many brides are opting for a more freeform bouquet rather than the tightly wired bunch; choosing to hold flowers that look like they might have just been plucked from a nearby garden while still looking elegant and cleverly put together. When it comes to picking floral arrangements for the venue, think about hanging plants or table wreaths. These will still be eye-catching while allowing your guests to chat across the table without having to duck and dive behind an overbearing centrepiece.

Cake

Pampering

When choosing the cake for your big day you might feel overwhelmed by the number of flavours, sizes and designs on offer. If you’re having a small wedding, save yourself some money and opt for a one or two tier cake with more of a personalised style, and if your wedding is going to be on the larger side, consider a bigger cake with more of a simple design. Simple doesn’t mean boring, and there are countless bakeries that will offer beautiful cakes that can fit in with the theme of your wedding. You don’t have to stick to tradition and go for the common fruit cake either, if your favourite flavour is chocolate or funfetti – go for it. Dessert tables are proving more and more popular too, so if you don’t feel like splashing out on a big cake, pick some of your favourite sweet treats and let your guests pick at them throughout the night.

Brides, the natural look is in. Though your make up does need to last all day and photograph well, there are ways to have this done without looking completely unlike yourself, so be mindful when picking a makeup artist. How you wear your hair for your wedding is as important as the dress. The bridal up do is slowly becoming a thing of the past, so why not consider a vamped up version of your everyday look. Grooms, while you might be planning on just getting up and going on your big day, there are things you can do to get yourself feeling confident on what is your special day. Depending on how fast your hair grows, get yourself a haircut a week or two before the wedding so it’s not looking too overdone on the day. Take care of any facial hair that could look messy; you don’t want to look back at photos and wish you’d had a shave. Also, there’s one thing you really should consider that might not have crossed your mind – get yourself a manicure. Your day is going to consist of a lot of hand shaking, and you probably don’t want to be reaching out to guests with long nails or dry palms.

Catering The traditional three course sit down meal is still popular, but this can make it harder to please all of your guests, especially with all the varying dietary requirements you’ll find within a friendship group these days, and even more so if you’ve invited any fussy little ones. Instead of worrying about creating three or four separate menus, why not find a caterer who can create an assortment of small and sharing plates? Or if you’re having an outdoor wedding, look into having a food van or two. Lots of restaurants are starting their own catering companies, so if you’re keeping your wedding local you may well be able to get your favourite dinner spot to come down and feed yourself and guests.

Guest List You’d be amazed at how stressful putting together a guest list for your wedding can be. You and your partner may not agree on who the other wishes to invite, and even if you do, the number of guests you end up with could mean the costs of your wedding have skyrocketed. While you might be scared of hurting people’s feelings by not inviting them to your nuptials, remember that the day is about you. If you don’t want to invite that second cousin you met once at another cousins wedding, then don’t. Inviting only your nearest and dearest cuts costs and makes your day feel more special and focuses on your union, rather than spending your day playing catch up with 40 distant relatives.

What to wear Black tie is making a comeback, so grooms get your tux ready. If you’re not a fan of black or you’re planning a summer wedding and can’t face the heat in a three-piece, there are plenty of stores that can create the ideal suit to compliment the theme and your own personal style. The main attraction of the day has always been the dress, and while you might feel that there’s a lot of pressure to look perfect on your big day, the most important thing is that you feel good in the gown you’ve chosen. On trend at the moment are dresses that are relaxed and comfortable with a slightly bohemian feel, featuring elegant and intricate patterns. It’s not all about white anymore either, with brides opting for pastels or dresses featuring muted splashes of colour. Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 17

Confetti

It’s all about you With the average age at which couples marry getting higher, we look at ‘older’ brides and things they need to consider when planning their big day. By Rhiana Hughes.

W

hile the overall number of marriages in the UK has been steadily declining over recent years, the number of marriages at older ages is increasing, as is the age at which men and women are choosing to settle down. Research has shown that the average age for men to marry today is 37.5, while women are marrying slightly younger at 35.1. But does the age at which you decide to get married change your big day? What really is an ‘older bride’? Not too long ago, you’d have been considered an older bride if you were walking down the aisle at any age over 23. And if you were over 30, forget it… you were well and truly on the shelf. While this isn’t the case anymore, what many consider to be an older bride really isn’t very old at all. Though the average age for women to marry is 35, you might find that you’re considered an older or ‘mature’ bride as soon as you’re past the age of 27. Whether you’re 27 or 77 though, you can still have your wedding on your terms, no matter why you’re choosing to marry a bit later on. Why get married later in life? There are plenty of reasons as to why the age at which women are marrying is increasing, and no two situations are identical. Whether you’ve chosen to wait until you’re financially secure, whether you were widowed, or whether it’s simply your second (maybe even third or fourth) marriage, your wedding day will still be one of the most special days of your life. The cost of weddings is at an all-time high, so couples are giving themselves more time to save up for their big day, and with less pressure coming from families to get married, marriage is now the informed choice of couples who want to demonstrate their commitment to one another. Research actually suggests that those who marry earlier in life may face greater challenges, as they could struggle with the responsibilities of starting a family at a

relatively early age and it could be harder for them to reach any educational or career goals that they’ve set for themselves. Getting married later in life means that the chances of you having already achieved these goals is much higher. Not your first time down the aisle? Whether it’s your first, second, third or even eighth marriage, your wedding day will still be just as important to you, and who says you’ve even got to walk down the aisle this time? There is no rule book that says you have to stick to tradition, and getting remarried might actually give you an excuse to have a wedding that caters more to your personality, rather than hosting a wedding that’s more about your guests than yourself. Planning a wedding if it’s not your first time round could seem quite daunting; will your guests be as enthusiastic? Can you still register for gifts? How big should your bridal party be? Are you going to invite ex-partners? What should you wear? Where should you have the ceremony? These are all questions that will come up, if not in your own head, likely asked by other people. There is no reason though, that you can’t still enjoy the process of planning your nuptials. Try not to worry about what others will think of your big day, as it’s a day that above all else, should be enjoyed by you and your husband-to-be. If you can’t decide whether or not to invite an ex-partner, think about whether or not you’ll be comfortable with them there. If you feel uncomfortable registering for gifts, why not set up a wishing well so people can choose to contribute towards your honeymoon? Really, there shouldn’t be any problem that can’t be solved by thinking ‘what will make myself and my partner happy?’ There are still a few things to consider when getting remarried though. When planning the event with your partner, be careful to avoid saying things like ‘I did that last time’ or ‘when I married…’ as you don’t want your partner to feel that your day is

being compared to your last wedding. This is especially true when it comes to your vows. If you’re choosing to write your own vows, steer clear of talking about how you used to feel before you met your significant other, instead focus on how they make you feel now. Not only will this highlight the fact that you’re still feeling this way, but it’ll avoid any awkwardness if you did choose to invite your ex! Going to the chapel? It can take a while to find the perfect place to hold your wedding celebrations, so before you embark on the mammoth task of sifting through magazines and endless webpages, make sure you have an idea of what you want from a venue. If it’s a religious ceremony you were hoping for, make sure you check that this is an option for you, especially if it’s not your first marriage as some churches won’t perform religious ceremonies if you’ve been through a divorce. If it is the case that you can’t have a church wedding, consider getting married at your local registry office before heading to your church for a blessing instead. It doesn’t have to be a white wedding… …but it can be if you want it to be. Don’t think that because you’re not as young as you once were that you can’t wear white on your wedding day. Many young and first-time brides are wearing colour, so there’s no reason you can’t go for a classic look. Getting married as an ‘older bride’ gives you more freedom when it comes to picking your outfit as there will likely be less of a preconceived idea of what you should wear coming from your guests. What’s important is that you feel comfortable and go for something that suits you and your individual style, be it a white gown, a blush mini dress or a champagne jumpsuit, you know best what looks good on you, so don’t let others influence your decision.

umpkins. Soon those melon-sized orange things will be everywhere as Halloween fast approaches. It feels like they’ve always been a UK tradition, and yet, many of us will look back at our childhoods and remember a time when they were nowhere to be seen. Indeed – many of us remember carrying lanterns of a very different kind. In the past, parents would painstakingly carve out turnips and place small candles inside. Some still do, but since Brits have embraced Halloween as passionately as the Americans do, pumpkins are more in abundance than ever before. And with hard exteriors and soft centres, they are seemingly destined to be lanterns. Pumpkins may not seem exotic in this day and age, where fruits and vegetables from all over the world are as accessible as British grown crops, but it is believed that seeds from related plants originated in Mexico between 7000 and 5500BC. References to pumpkins date back many centuries and the name ‘pumpkin’ originated from the Greek word ‘pepon’, which translates as large melon. By the 20th century, pumpkins were synonymous with the harvest season in North America, and soon became a staple element of Halloween celebrations. Of course, Halloween itself originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, but us Brits only fully embraced pumpkins from our American cousins some 20 years ago. And now, just as Christmas tree farms are popping up all over the UK during the festive season, so are pumpkin farms on the run up to Halloween. Village Pumpkins in Barlow is one of the latest farms to join the trend. Every weekend throughout October and on selected dates in the week before Halloween, you can grab a wheelbarrow and pick your own. This is the first year that sheep farmer, Charlie Vilage has attempted to grow pumpkins, and he’s sure chosen a good one to do so. This year’s unusually hot summer has provided the perfect climate for growing

P

pumpkins. So much so that Charlie is expecting a whopping 5,000 to grace his land. “The sun’s been good this summer,” agrees Charlie. “We haven’t had as much rain as we normally would, so that has steadied their growth, but they’ve done well this year. They are obviously sun-loving vegetables! They need a well-drained field to grow in, with plenty of feed and we’ve used the manure from the cattle. “We put the seeds in pots in May and then we planted them out in the fields in the first week of June. They’d usually need to go in a greenhouse at the potting stage, but the weather has been favourable so they didn’t need it. Bees then pollinate the flowers, so the pumpkins can grow.” Few people realise that the pumpkin plant produces striking yellow flowers, and even fewer are aware that not all pumpkins are orange. “There is a variety. There’s white ones and orange ones. The orange ones are green to start with and then change colour as they grow. But the white ones are white all the way through. There’s been quite a lot of interest in them so far. We’d already saved some in the summer for customers wanting decorations for their weddings in October.” Going to Village Pumpkins not only creates a fantastic day out for all the family to enjoy, it’s also a great way to find out more about agriculture and the way our food is grown. The perfect pumpkin, is firm on the outside and hollow in the middle. Just give one a tap to test if it’s ready. If you’re not sure or have any other questions, Charlie will be on hand and happy to help. So if you are still tempted to pick up a pumpkin from a supermarket, think again. “Obviously, Halloween is becoming more and more popular in England, and it’s an opportunity for kids to come out and see how pumpkins are grown,” concludes Charlie. “People should come to Village Pumpkins to support local farmers and to see the variety of pumpkins we grow.” Village Pumpkins will open from 10am to 4pm every weekend throughout October and then on 29, 30 and 31 October. Pick your own at Village Pumpkins, Johnnygate Lane, Barlow, S18 7SE or find them on Facebook @VillagePumpkinsPYO.

EATING OUT

Greedy is good… WHETHER YOU EAT IN, EAT OUT OR EAT AT HOME, YOU’LL FIND A TASTE OF THE AEGEAN DOWN HUNTER’S BAR WAY, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. f you thought The Greedy Greek Deli was just for takeaway, you’d be mistaken. OK, so most of their menu – from gyros to Greek salads and more – is available to take home and with tie-ins to Just-Eat, Hungry House as well their own app, their tasty, authentic food is only a click away. But if you haven’t dined in – or outside for the matter, weather permitting – you’re missing out. The Greedy Greek Deli, owned by the Mouzakis, has been a part of Sharrow Vale Road for almost 15 years and has continued to grow and evolve into more than just a deli. The constant turnover of customers gives the place a constant buzz, whether you’re dining in the downstairs café-style area or in the classier, upstairs dining room. And with the smell of grilled meat in the air it does feel you could be half a world away in a taverna overlooking the Aegean. The menu is extensive but service is quick, meaning you don’t have to wait too long to have a plate of fresh, homemade food sitting in front of you. Everyone is catered for, including children with a good selection of

smaller plates (£5.20 each). My two tucked into chicken skewers (him) and spit roast pork (her) and loved every bit. With so much to choose from, my wife and I needed a little nudge in the right direction and appetisers of pitted kalamata olives (£4.10), fried halloumi cheese (£5.60) and Spanakotyropita (£5.30), a type of feta and spinach samosa, gave us plenty of food for thought. For mains, my Greek chorizo and chicken wrap, served in a pitta bread with mixed salad, tzatziki and strofilia dip (£7.45), and with some extra spit roast pork thrown in for good measure, was substantial to say the least. The Greedy Greek Deli clearly don’t believe in small portions. My wife, meanwhile, tucked into a tomato stuffed with beef mince, rice and feta (£5.20) and stuffed aubergines (£5.20). Wholesome and delicious, the latter was definitely the stand-out of the two. Greek lemon potatoes (£4.60) provided a citrusy contrast. Drinks are mainly of the soft variety; we shared apple, orange and blood orange varieties (£2.50 each) but the deli operates a

‘bring your own’ policy should you prefer something a bit stronger. Don’t expect to make an evening of it; the service is prompt and the portions are big but my goodness they’re tasty. If, like us, you’ve had more than your fill and can’t make room for dessert, you can take advantage of the fact that it’s a deli and take it home with you. We enjoyed some deliciously sweet baklava (£5.10) the next day with a strong cup of coffee and were all the better for it. How to find ‘the one’ for you ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, HAS SOME TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING WEDDING RINGS. hen choosing your wedding rings, the options can seem endless and selecting the one that’s right for you can appear a daunting task. However, considering a few key factors before you start can make it easier to find ‘the one’ that you can love forever.

W

TIMESCALE

Make sure you allow plenty of time to choose your rings and have them made. There are hundreds of styles to choose from, so it can take a while to decide and you’ll be more relaxed if you aren’t in a hurry. Our customers often find it helpful to have a first look well in advance of the big day before making a final decision later. Although most of our rings take 3-4 weeks to order, some bespoke designs can take longer. We recommend allowing a minimum of twice as much time to avoid unnecessary worry. EXPECTATIONS

Do you want to wear your ring all the time? How important is it to you that the ring you choose now can be worn for a lifetime? Our experienced team can help you find a design that is both practical and beautiful, advising on how different materials wear and what upkeep designs require. For instance, choosing a ring made from titanium or steel may mean you cannot have it resized if your fingers change in the future, while a diamond set band will need additional maintenance over the years to ensure your diamonds are securely set. Taking expert advice and making an informed decision now will help you enjoy your rings for many anniversaries to come. ENGAGEMENT RING

Most brides wear their wedding ring next to

their engagement ring and a neat fit is increasingly a key factor in their choice of design. Modern engagement rings are often designed to sit next to a wedding band, but some designs, especially twist or cluster styles, may require a shaped ring. There are lots of solutions available, from bespoke ‘made-to-fit’ designs to pre-existing wishbone or ‘bow-shaped’ styles. If you won’t be wearing your engagement ring all the time, consider how the wedding ring will look on its own as well. Trying examples on is the best way of seeing what will work and is another reason for getting started early.

STYLE

This is the fun part! There are lots of styles to choose from (plain, patterned, stone-set…) and the best way to decide is by trying lots on, but you can start beforehand by thinking about whether you’d prefer a classic or modern style, whether there is a detail in your engagement ring you’d like to pick up on or something personal you’d like to incorporate. This will help us to show you the perfect designs that you can fall in love with. Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 41

RENEGADE CHOICE The emergence of the SUV has taken the market by storm, and who better to buy from than a company with excellent 4x4 credentials – Jeep. Jeep has announced the arrival of their all-new Renegade SUV. Starting from £19,200, the Renegade is amongst the most competitive when it comes to value for money. Available with a choice of diesel and brand-new petrol engines, the Renegade has been built to suit everybody’s needs. A 120hp 1.0-litre turbo and 150hp 1.3-litre are the petrol choices and 1.6-litre and 2.0litre for diesel options. Can be paired with a six-speed manual, DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) or a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Renegade has been made to look more sophisticated with a smarter and more expensive look. The new Jeep Renegade

New Fabia makes its debut Say hello to the newly updated Skoda Fabia. Out now, the car has a start price of just £12,840. JORDAN CUTFORTH HAS THE PICK OF THE NEW AND UPDATED MODELS IN THIS MONTH’S MOTORING ROUND-UP.

Fresh outlook Honda has revealed updates to its much-loved subcompact SUV, the HR-V. Upgrades include a new, highgloss dark chrome panel above the grille, deeper air intake sections that house circular fog lights, and the headlights now have projector lenses with redesigned LED daytime running lights as standard. More expensive trims come with a new 17-inch alloy design, and the exhaust tailpipe has a unique chrome finisher. Under the skin, Honda has added extra sound insulation throughout the interior. The HR-V will be powered only by a 128hp, 1.5-litre, naturally aspirated petrol. Figures are 53.2mpg and 121g/km of CO2. Customer deliveries will start from October. A more powerful 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit and a 1.6-litre diesel unit will be available in 2019. Manual and CVT options available.

New MG adds a touch of class MG – synonymous for building British sports cars a few decades ago – has built a new version of their current best-selling model, the MG3. Back when the MG3 was first released, it was a supermini for those wanting to stand out from the supermini crowd, wanting to not conform to the usual Polo, Fabia, Fiesta gang. But now, this is a car definitely worth considering. Every MG3 comes with a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, showing us that MG believes in the quality of its products. It’s also one of the most spacious superminis on the market, with boot space measuring at 285-litres. A fresh looking exterior and interior gives the MG3 a very classy feel making it a very appealing proposition. Prices starting from £9,495. Available now. 48 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk

CHRISTMAS

Get that festive feeling IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START PLANNING THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY… SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? ith the warm weather drawing to the close and summer holidays a distant memory, it can only mean one thing the countdown to Christmas and the festive party season is on. This December, across the Sheffield City Region work colleagues will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink – or two together. A well organised party in a quality, popular venue can give dedicated, hard-working staff something fun to look forward to as the year draws to a close. It is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable Christmas work ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advance, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, telling cheesy Christmas cracker jokes whilst dancing around the photocopier to Bowie.

W

It doesn’t have to be the manager who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one in the office who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans, whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, or a huge organisation with hundreds of employees. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here. Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 49

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS

THERE’S NO RESPITE FOR PROGRESS IN THE TOWN, SAYS PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD. s we edge closer to the end of the year, things are certainly not slowing down here in Chesterfield. Last month we saw the return of the annual Chesterfield Investment Summit, which shone a light on the visitor economy

A

in the area as well as giving us an update on the impressive £1billion-worth of investment currently underway in the town, including key schemes such as Northern Gateway, Chesterfield Waterside and Peak Resort. The final quarter of 2018 is proving formative for Chesterfield. In September, work began on the Saltergate car park, the planning application was submitted for the Chesterfield Enterprise Centre on the Donut car park, and this month Jomast Developments hand over the Elder Way Hotel to Premier Inn ahead of opening in January 2019. October sees the spotlight put on another thriving sector in the town – food and drink. New restaurants, bars and cafes are opening across the town, from Crafty Dog in Brampton to Cuiri Cuiri and Pump and Grind in the town centre; all of which have been shortlisted in the Best Newcomer category in the

Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards 2018. Now in its sixth year, the event will be hosted by celebrity chef Lesley Waters in Chesterfield College’s Heart Space building. It has become THE event of the year for food and drink businesses and one I very much look forward to. The Food and Drink Awards are all the more special this year as they will be recognising apprentices and apprenticeships with two new award categories – Apprentice and Apprentice Employer of the Year. This combination of Chesterfield’s advocacy of apprenticeships and support for the food and drink sector is hugely important to me. I am a firm believer in growing the future and careers of young people alongside businesses and the economy of the town. To sustain £1billion-worth of developments we must also have the skilled workforce to support the investment taking place. Apprenticeships are critical to ensuring we have the workforce now and in the future on our doorstep. Local jobs also mean more money is retained to further invest in the local economy. It is this which will enable the town to continue moving forward. Let’s just make sure we can keep up.
