WELCOME

WELCOME TO VIBE QUARTERLY...

SPRING has sprung and brought a good dose of sunshine with it too, which is most welcome after a dull, dismal, wet and windy few weeks. I’m sure the team behind the Festival of the Outdoors are happy about the upturn in weather as their city-wide event continues apace. By the time you pick up this copy of the magazine, there’ll still be plenty to discover – Emily Ledger took a closer look on page 30. Talking of things to do, Phlegm’s exhibition – Mauseoleum of the Giants – is going down a storm and has attracted people from all over the country eager to get a glimpse of his macabre madness. Trust us, it’s brilliant. Anyone who follows ‘Big Shaun’ Doane on Twitter knows he’s got plenty to say; he was all too eager to tell us about the Everly Pregnant Brothers’ tenth anniversary, which they’ll be celebrating this year. Not bad for something that started out as a bit of a laugh. They’re keeping things very much under wraps but gave us a little glimpse – see page 26 to find out more. After two headline announcements, Tramlines is very much creeping into everyone’s consciousness – and shaping up to be another cracker. We take a look at who’s there and how you can get your hands on some tickets – see our competitions on page 51. On the foodie front we herald the arrival of Kommune (which looks brilliant by the way), speak to Matt Helders and James O’Hara about Ambulo and dine at Silversmiths and Honeycomb. Elsewhere, we look at further developments in the Heart of the City II scheme, plans to improve Fargate and is Meadowhall about to get a new neighbour? See page 44 for more. Don’t waste a minute; it’ll be summer before you know it. Richard Abbey Editor

THE WAIT IS OVER... KOMMUNE IS HERE. AND IT’S BRILLIANT. EXCITEMENT has been building for new Castlegate food hall Kommune over the last couple of months – and now the wait is over. It’s finally opened its doors and boy does it look good. They’re open bright and early from 9am until late, satisfying your breakfast, dinner and tea needs each day, as well as serving everything from local brews to organic wines, and an eclectic mix of cocktails and homemade sodas on the ‘Department of Drinks’ bar that wraps itself around its famous spiral staircase. The bar line up boasts a permanent selection of Freedom brewery beer that is free from animal products and brewed with a conscience as well as some continually changing guest taps. The wine list will be varied, hitting some of those all-time favourites, along with some more contemporary wines and fizz. The cocktail list sounds pretty exciting too, with a cocktail inspired by each of the traders as well as some classics, and a separate aperitivo menu. For those of you preferring the 0% route there will also be a list of house made cordials and sodas. The kitchen lin-up is equally exciting too, featuring Pom Kitchen, Shoot The Bull, Chaat

Cart, Fat Hippo, The Depot Bakery, JH Mann, Tamper, YOKI, MorMor and Baked in Brick. Kommune isn’t just about the food and drink though, as retailers have joined the Kommune family too. Hop Hideout will be using their indepth knowledge to provide craft beer, cider, specialist natural, biodynamic and organic wines and spirits in ‘a one-stop shop for great quality drinks to take home’. La Biblioteka are putting in a specialist magazine, book and printing shop as well as facilitating other pop ups by local, independent artists and craftspeople in the space. Finally, heading up the art department at Kommune is The Viewing Room, brought by the creators of 99 Mary St and DED design agency. A contemporary gallery with a focus on pop, urban and contemporary art showcasing the works of established pop art idols as well as exciting new works by local and international up and coming artists. Kommune is a venture that the people behind Tamper, The Depot Bakery and Kollider Projects have been working on for some time and forms part of a bigger regeneration project of Castle House and the surrounding area. Trust us, it’s mega.

AS a parent, the café in Sheffield’s Millenium Gallery has long been a source of frustration, so news at the back end of last year that the group behind some of the city’s best bars had joined forces with an Arctic Monkey, and were about to take over the running of the venue was hugely exciting news. The Rockingham Group, who are responsible for local faves The Great Gatsby, Picture House Social, and of course, the award-winning Public, are collaborating with Arctic’s drummer Matt Helders and Museums Sheffield to transform the cafés at Millenium Gallery and Weston Park Museum into the hotlyanticipated Ambulo. The first fruits of their labour, in the Millenium Gallery, were on show over the weekend, as the café opened up to the public on Saturday 9 February, and we caught up with owners Matt Helders and James O’Hara, ahead of opening to find out if there were any last minute nerves, and what we could expect from the new venture. “When we were first talking about this, a lot of what we were talking about were things we’d seen elsewhere and travelling around and bringing some of that back.” Says Matt: “I still love spending time here, I love being here and I think it made more sense for me to do it here than anywhere else. It just seemed natural to do it in Sheffield. “It’s also nice to provide it for Sheffield, in a way and bring something new.” James added: “We’ve been talking about Ambulo for three years. Because the name means to wander in Latin, it was always coming back to this thing of travelling and bringing these things back to Sheffield. The travelling reference is always there because Matt has always got a camera with him, wherever he is. “We thought Millennium Gallery would be the perfect place to do the first one.” James now has a wealth of experience converting venues, and a dependable team that he can rely on to transform his vision, in which he includes the likes of Rocket Design’s, Nick Deakin and photography from India Hobson. He explains that each venue from the Gatsby, to most recently, Public has been a reflection of where they are in their lives. He said: “Gatsby, we were in our twenties and it was open till three o’clock, and it was DJ sets and it was kind of loud and a lot of drinking.

“Gradually, we’ve grown up with the venues each time. We wanted to do something that was for families and was really open and accessible.” “Gradually, we’ve grown up with the venues each time. So Picture House was a bit more grown up and food-led. Public was a step up again in terms of something that was a bit different. I think we wanted to do something that was inclusive, a lot of us now, including Matt and my brother, have got kids as well. We wanted to do something that was for families and was really open and accessible. “What we’ve managed to do is do a food menu with Ronnie, the head chef who is another one that’s got a little ‘kid, that’s nutritious, but at the same time still fun and something that kids are gonna want to eat.” So, while James has plenty of experience in the industry, Matt is clearly more used to being behind a drum kit than a bar. “I’ve had to trust people who have done it before, and some of it I’m just not qualified at all to be involved with” admits matt: “The things I’m interested in I’ve had an input in, obviously the creative side of it, what it looks like and the music, and you know, some of the food. That’s been the fun part – I just get to do the fun stuff. James added: “The visual thing is the bit that Matt’s been really involved in. Most of the inspiration for the colours and the decor came from Matt’s photos. So, when people go on the website they’ll see some of the photos. The concept for Ambulo is all-day dining, and with the attached museum it is important to them that it caters for the families in the day time. James said: “It is going to transition through the day, from being much more family-focused in the day time to becoming a bit more of a restaurant. The lights will get lower, and the music will get louder. Matt said: “I’ve been doing a playlist that will hopefully reflect that the experience will be different in the day-time.”

Bish bash Bosh

Jungle vibes

The lads from vegan recipe site Bosh! – Ian Theasby and Henry Firth – are coming to Sheffield to launch their latest recipe book. Many of you will have seen Bosh’s top-down vegan recipe videos knocking about on Facebook (they do have over 1.7 million Facebook followers), but did you know they’ve got a new cookbook out, packed with over 140 recipes, and did you also know they’re from Sheffield? The lads are returning to their hometown as part of this year’s Off the Shelf Festival, talking about their latest recipe book Bish Bash Bosh. The event will be held at the Pennine Theatre on 3 April, and also gives audience members the chance to ask questions as part of a Q & A.

Mowgli has set its sights on Sheffield. Ecclesall Road to be precise. The popular Indian already has sites in Liverpool, Birmingham, Nottingham and Oxford. After teasing us for a few months, Mowgli Street Food is set to launch its first restaurant in Yorkshire, opening a new site in Sheffield this spring. The Indian home kitchen plans to open its doors on Ecclesall Road in April, in the former home of another Indian street food restaurant, The Cat’s Pyjamas. “We have many followers in Sheffield who are calling for the smash and grab of the Mowgli home kitchen,” says founder and Indian Food writer Nisha Katona: “We are not everyone’s cup of tea, but we go where our consumers and followers want us.” The former barrister turned restaurateur added: “Sheffield is the home town of my aunt and uncle – Aunty Geeta of the prawn curry! Many of my childhood memories are of eating mint choc chip ice cream adulterated with green Cardamom in their lounge in Kingfield Road around the corner from Ecclesall Road. “I can’t tell you the deep joy and purpose it gives me to be able to go back to cities that I loved as part of my northern childhood landscape and honour them in any small way I can. “With a homely eatery, jobs in a joy-filled place of work and imperfect as it might be, the food of my home hearth... the Mowgli menu. All that that I can, I give. Sheffield may we serve you well as employers and feed you well, as your humble neighbourhood Indian home kitchen.”

Sporting dinners at The Omega Former England and British Lions scrum-half Matt Dawson was the guest speaker when Sheffield RUFC and Wilson Field launched the first in a series of sporting lunches in the Omega restaurant at Abbeydale Park. Dawson, a member of England’s 2003 World Cupwinning side, was greeted by a full house and an enthusiastic welcome when Sheffield’s business community came together for an afternoon of sporting chat as they relaxed into the weekend. Future guest speakers include former England cricketer turned pundit and TV personality Phil Tufnell in September (date to be confirmed) and there will be a special event for former Scotland rugby international Doddie Weir’s Motor Neurone Disease charity at the Cutler’s Hall on Friday 29 November. For ticket enquiries for future events contact info@omegaatabbeydale. co.uk

Marathon discount Devonshire Street’s The Common Room is offering all Sheffield Half Marathon runners 20 per cent off their entire food bill on Sunday 14 April, 12–4pm, plus you can bring five people along with you. General manager Dan Bathie said, “It’s always fantastic to see so many people of all ages and abilities raising money for great causes and this is our way of saying a big well done to them all!”

Back Bench After the success of their first event back in November at Testone Factory, in Kelham Island, supper club Bench returns this spring (13 April), at Sheffield flower shop Swallows & Damsons on Abbeydale Road. Brought to you by Sheff catering hot shots Tom Aronica AKA Ronnie (food) and Jack Wakelin (drinks), the idea is to bring people together in a relaxed setting – all hosted around one table (or a bench!).

Taste the Med A new riverside Mediterranean restaurant and shisha bar is coming to Sheffield. Agha Lounge, which will be home to a restaurant, shisha café, dessert parlour and mojito bar, is hoping to be open on the riverside, in North Bank, by the end of March. The beautifully decked-out venue, which is just off the Wicker, will contain Mediterranean restaurant MIR, a dessert parlour called Rainbow Desserts, as well as a mojito lounge and shisha café.

St Luke’s charity opening for Ego at The Dore Moor Inn Ego at The Dore Moor Inn is now open to the public following an extensive refurbishment inside and out. Following a six-week refurbishment the venue has been completely transformed into a modern and eye-catching restaurant and pub whilst keeping intact many of the original features of the building. As part of the opening, Ego also held two charity launch nights raising money for the much-loved St Luke’s Hospice. As part of this, guests were invited to choose two courses from the a la carte menu for a £15 donation to the charity. This enabled Ego at The Dore Moor Inn to raise £2,625 for the charity. “This is our way of saying thank you to such an incredible and long-standing charity in Sheffield. The work they do throughout the city changes the lives of so many people and they are thoroughly deserving of this donation from the wonderful guests we welcomed for our opening nights,” explained James Mobbs, head of marketing for Ego Restaurants. Zoe Manders, community fundraising assistant added: “We are absolutely thrilled with the support Ego at The Dore Moor Inn have given us at their charity open nights, the money raised will make such a difference to our patients and their families.”

There’s an app for that… Picture this. Sitting on a dazzlingly sunny terrace in the summer, you pick up your phone and order a fresh, ice-filled Aperol Spritz. Fancy a pizza to share? No problem, you can tack one of those onto your order as well. In a few minutes, drinks arrive, shortly followed by pizza. You haven’t had to remember your wallet, worry about a tab or do that squinty face that happens when you go from outside to inside when it’s really sunny The Milestone Group app has been around for a little while now. When Cutlery Works opened its doors in November 2018, its Sheffield-based parent company, The Milestone Group, launched with it a handy ordering app, which allows people to browse menus, as well as order and pay for food. By paying with your phone, you can earn points and redeem exclusive member deals with The Milestone Group app. Guests earn ten points for every £1 that they spend within the group – that’s a whopping ten per cent back in cash redeemable at any Group venue. Guests can also purchase special in-app offers and pay in-store using their phone. Most excitingly, guests can refresh their glasses or plates by ordering fresh drinks and food items to their table, all via their phone. Following the success of the app at Cutlery Works, The Milestone Group has rolled the app out at all the venues in the group – Craft & Dough Kelham Island, Craft & Dough Campo Lane, The Milestone and INC. Not all features will be available at all venues (e.g. food ordering at The Milestone) but all points accrued will be available to be redeemed at any venue. It’s free on the Apple Store and Google Play, and just requires a payment card to be registered in order for you to start accruing points. Make sure that you keep push notifications on, as there’ll be a series of competitions running over the summer based around these, plus updates on your orders so you can keep track. And the sooner you do that, the sooner you can have a fresh spritz in the sun and not lose your seat…

Beery summer

Canon’s cream tea

Peakender Festival is back from 16-18 August, and the organisers at Thornbridge Brewery reckon it’s going to ‘bigger and better than ever.’ The festival showcases the some of the best UK breweries, a range of street food, live music and entertainment against the pretty awe inspiring backdrop of the Peak District, at Bakewell Showground. This year’s event will feature beers from favourites such as Abbeydale Brewery, Beavertown, Magic Rock, Rooster’s Brewing co., Northern Monk, North Brewing co. Tiny Rebel, and of course Thornbridge’s own award-winning brews. As well as the beer there is plenty of street food to get stuck into from the likes of Get Wurst, Dim Sum Su, Greedy Greek and Doner Summer as well as plenty of bands and other beer based entertainment, special one off collaboration brews and meet the brewer sessions. Weekend camping passes for two adults are priced at £79.50 including booking fee.

Probably the grandest welcome to any café in Sheffield, 1554 opened its doors in June 2015 and quickly established itself as a popular place for locally-sourced sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes, quiches, pork pies, coffee… the list goes on. One thing most of us find ourselves struggling to avoid every time we pay them a visit, is the temptation of their desserts. You might pop in with the best of intentions, but leave with a belly full of cake and another slice in your bag for a midnight snack. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there! 1554 have noticed how much we all love theircakes, scones, sandwiches and teas, and have decided to launch The Canon’s Cream Tea, the perfect excuse for us to indulge in all our favourite things. The Canon’s Cream Tea will run every Thursday afternoon, and we’ve been told booking is essential to secure your place in dessert heaven.

Pan-Asian delights ECCLESALL ROAD GETS A TRENDY ADDITION, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ginger, garlic coconut sauce and sticky rice, got the thumbs up from across the table. For mains, head chef Daniel Foster had got the balance of flavours just right in my prawn laksa (£13), which came highly recommended by our waitress. The prawns, rice noodles and stir-fried veg worked in harmony with the tangy Malaysian sauce to make a fresh and tasty dish. My dining companion, meanwhile, opted for the Ahiru-don (£16), a delicately spiced pan-roasted duck breast served with rice and a mango salsa. Desserts aired on the lighter side and got no complaints from us. A deconstructed cheese cake (£7) – lemon zest cream cheese with ginger crumb, lemon curd and black sesame seed tuille – was delicious while the coconut parfait (£7) complemented well with the varying tastes and textures of mango gel, lemon meringue, caramelised white chocolate, house granola and bee pollen. As we finished up, the bar was in full swing, the cocktails were flowing, the music was pumping… Maybe we don’t need to look so enviously at our neighbours any more.

THERE’S no place like home. But while we all love the city in which we live, sometimes you can’t help but cast envious glances to cities like Leeds and Manchester. Why can’t we have what they have? Well, now you can thanks to the opening of Honeycomb Bar & Restaurant, a vision of owners Chris and Fraser that was realised in November last year. They set out to create a trendy, high energy drinking and dining experience, something they felt was lacking in the Steel City. The Ecclesall Road venue is unrecognisable from its predecessor, Three Monkeys (it’ll always be the Slug & Fiddle to those of a certain age), with the owners taking on the majority of design work as well as enrolling the help of Chloe Darker Interiors. The result is cool, contemporary and funky. A curved bar separates the restaurant from the bar area and you’ll find a honeycomb theme in the hexagonal booths and lighting. The bar was filling up as we arrived on a Friday night and took respite in the already busy restaurant, a mix of girl groups, large parties and couples. Cocktails are popular – the menu has been designed by bar manager Robbie Williamson and includes signatuares such as the Martini (Ketel One, candyfloss and bubblegum foam); Iced Tea (Honeycomb spirits, vanilla and Coke); and the Queen Bee (Warner Edwards honeybee gin, apple and blueberry). Food is described as ‘a modern Pan-Asian experience’ and includes dishes from Japan, Thailand, China and Malaysia. It didn’t disappoint. Starters of Cured Salmon Sashimi (£7) and Pan-Fried Cod Cheeks (£9) got us off to a flying start and paired well with bottles of Tsingtao (£4.20). The slivers of soy, yuzu and mirin-cured salmon were nicely seared around the edges and given extra zing by the pickled ginger and Wasabi. Delicate Cod cheeks, accompanied by a

A restaurant reforged THERE’S BEEN BIG CHANGES AT SILVERSMITHS – HAVE THEY BEEN FOR THE BETTER? WE SENT RICHARD ABBEY TO FIND OUT. Across the table, herb crusted rack of lamb (£26), with minted peas, hasselback potato, kale and rosemary jus looked, and tasted, every bit as good. The four cutlets of lamb were deliciously tender and we particularly liked the hasselback potatoes. Dessert was a stretch but we couldn’t say no to sticky toffee parkin and vanilla seed ice-cream (£6.50) and a parfait-like chocolate crémeux (£7), served with lime butterscotch, hazelnut ice-cream, praline and tuille. Indulgent, maybe, but a delicious way to end the meal. One of the more recent changes at Silversmiths is the addition of a private dining room, which can seat up to 14 people. It can be used for corporate events, meetings, celebrations or even a family dinner. The team are also holding cocktail masterclasses in this space too.

A NEW chapter started for Silversmiths Restaurant late last year, not only did new owners take the reins but a new head chef joined came on board too. Rose Heggie has settled in quickly and is already making her mark with her take on modern British food with a Yorkshire twist. It’s hearty fare – the portions are generous – but it’s done with finesse. The restaurant, an old workshop in days gone by, has plenty of character and is a cosy space with the majority of tables down one wall and a bar on the other. Dark blue contrasts with lots of wood and gold to give it a sophisticated air. The restaurant was busy on the evening of our visit – always a good sign – and once seated we were eager to tuck in. Having started with a carafe of Animado Mendoza Malbec (£16.50), we found ourselves drawn to the main courses first, and quickly decided we would both take up the meat option (venison for me, lamb for her) so settled on the seafood sharing platter for two (£22) to start. Smoked salmon, monkfish scampi, seared scallops and fishcake – the Sheffield variety; slices of potato and white fish, none of this rissole nonsense – were delicious in the own and the accompaniments – mushy peas, curry sauce, chilli jam and sourdough bread – all added extra bits of flavour. The curry sauce, with subtle hints of coconut and chilli heat, was very good and deserves special mention. My roast loin of venison (£26), with a wild mushroom pithivier, parsnip purée, buttered cabbage and bitter chocolate jus was cooked to perfection with the sauce adding just the right amount of bitter sweetness.

ABC 13 April / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk The legendary Sheffield band will be performing their iconic debut album, ‘The Lexicon Of Love’, in its entirety plus all their greatest hits. The album was first released in 1982 and went straight to number one. Fusing dance floor finesse with a postpunk attitude, the album spawned timeless tracks such ‘Poison Arrow’, ‘The Look Of Love’ ‘Tears Are Not Enough’, and ‘All Of My Heart’.

Music Take That 12, 13, 15, 16 April / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen present their greatest hits tour – Odyssey – to mark 30 years in the business. Formed as a five piece in 1989, they enjoyed immediate success with their first two albums charting at No.2 & No.1 respectively. Third album ‘Nobody Else’ confirmed their global domination, selling over six million copies and topping the charts in 11 countries. The departure of band member Robbie Williams prompted a break up in 1996 and nine years in the wilderness before the other four members reunited for 2005’s The Ultimate Tour. This sparked one of the greatest comebacks in British music history with Take That going on to release three number one albums in just four years. Robbie’s return for 2011’s ‘Progress’ saw them break the record for the fastest-selling album of the 21st century and fastest-selling tour of all time in the UK.

The Vamps 7 May / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk The Vamps are one of the most successful British bands, achieving a huge amount of success and acclaim all over the globe. The Vamps have picked up over 2 billion streams globally and have 8.4 million monthly listeners and 1.7 million followers on Spotify. They are also one of the most watched artists on YouTube, with over 600 million video views.

Events An Evening with Paolo Di Canio 24 March / Sheffield City Hall https://sheffieldcityhall.sivtickets.com The somewhat controversial former Sheffield Wednesday footballer returns to the city to talk about his career, including that infamous push on referee Paul Alcock. Di Canio had a sterling career at Juventus, Milan, Celtic, Wednesday and West Ham and has been credited as being one of the most talented, enigmatic, fiery and creative players to ever grace the Premier League. This exclusive show will see a live and unscripted interview with Paolo, reminiscing about those glorious football memories.

Comedy Bill Bailey 11 May / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk Bill Bailey’s Larks In Transit Tour is a compendium of travellers’ tales and the general shenanigans of 20 years as a travelling comedian. With musical virtuosity, surreal tangents and trademark intelligence, Bill Bailey tackles politics, philosophy and the pursuit of happiness. Plus, he fashions a symphony from a ringtone, tells the real story of Old McDonald, and a reimagines the Stars and Stripes.

Blue Planet II: Live in Concert 28 March / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk Blue Planet II – Live in Concert will feature the best bits of the series presented on a giant state-of-the-art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The stunning visuals will be complemented by the series’ moving score, which was composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, and will be performed by the 80-piece Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rhod Gilbert 5 April / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk It has been a while, but the multi-award-winning Welsh comedian is back, with a brand new live show – The Book of John. In a six-year break from stand-up, a lot has happened to Rhod. Almost all of it s**t. And just when he thought he’d hit rock bottom, he met a bloke... called John.

WWE Live Tour 16 May / FlyDSA Arena www.flydsaarena.co.uk The triple main event sees Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre going head to head, along with Braun Strowman and Baron Corbin, and Finn Balor vs Bobby Lashley. Nia Jax, Sasha Banks and Bayley will also be appearing, plus many more.

Stewart Francis 11 May / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk The star of ‘Mock the Week’, ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Crackerjack’ embarks on a brand-new show, in this, his last tour ever! See him before he heads off... Into The Punset. Justin Moorhouse 5 May / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk These days Justin’s not certain about anything apart from his uncertainty...Brexit looms, it appears the Cold War is being rebooted and that’s before we begin to worry about what’s happening in America… closer to home he’s starting to feel redundant as a parent. One kid is leaving home, the dog is getting older and doesn’t need much walking, and the youngest kid hits 13 and cancels the family subscription to The Beano.

Standing at the Sky’s Edge 15 March-6 April Crucible www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk In 1961, the first residents of Park Hill were given the keys to their new homes. With music by Richard Hawley, Standing at the Sky’s Edge tells their story over the next 50 years, in a heart-swelling, heart-breaking love song to Sheffield. The show has already been named as one of ‘the theatre shows you won’t want to miss in 2019’ by the BBC and as one of the ‘musicals not to miss’ by WhatsOnStage.

On Screen

American Idiot 26-30 March Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Following two critically acclaimed West End runs and a sell-out UK Tour, Green Day’s explosive rock musical American Idiot returns to mark the show’s 10th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of the Grammy Award-winning original album. American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. The show features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer.

Dumbo 29 March Tim Burton’s live action remake of this Disney classic looks quite the spectacle. It follows the story of a young elephant, whose oversized ears enable him to fly. Colin Farrell, Eva Green and Michael Keaton all star. Pet Sematary 5 April Based on the novel by Stephen King, this remake (or is reimagining?) follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbour, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

Hello Dolly 27-28 March Montgomery Theatre themontgomery.org.uk Meet Dolly Levi, the larger than life matchmaker, who meddles in love lives to ensure everyone lives happily ever after. Until, that is, she is called upon to find a match for Horace Vandergelder, the man she has set her own sights on. Fabulous Jerry Herman songs, including the famous title number, with wonderful comedy, costumes and dancing. Put On Your Sunday Clothes and catch this visually spectacular show Before The Parade Passes By! This production is presented and promoted by Ellesmere Musical Theatre Company, a Sheffield Community Partner of The Montgomery.

Hellboy 12 April A sort of sequel rather than a remake sees Stranger Things’ David Harbour take on the mantle of Hellboy, who prepares to stop a powerful and ancient medieval sorceress (Milla Jovovich) who seeks to destroy all of mankind. Detective Pikachu 10 May In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective. Based on the popular videogame, unless you’re a fan, this may go over your head. Kids should love it. And Ryan Reynolds is in it (sort of).

Calendar Girls 2-13 April Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Calendar Girls The Musical by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth is the award-winning production based on the true story of the calendar girls – a group of ordinary ladies who achieved something extraordinary. This marvellous musical comedy, which received fantastic five-star reviews in London’s West End, now comes to Sheffield. Starring Fern Britton, AnnaJane Casey, Sara Crowe, Karen Dunbar, Ruth Madoc, Rebecca Storm and Denise Welch.

Exhibitions The Life is so Everyday: The Home in British Art 1950-1980 30 March-6 July Graves Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Home means different things to different people. Our relationship with our homes influences the way we think about ourselves and each other. This new exhibition brings together over 40 examples of work by Patrick Caulfield, Helen Chadwick, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Anne Redpath and Su Richardson to show how artists have explored our diverse experiences of home life. Between 1950 and 1980, public attitudes to home changed dramatically. After the war, the home represented an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of marriag, family and community. As the second half of the century progressed, the advent of modernising domestic appliances was mirrored by significant social and political developments, including the rise of feminism and the decriminalisation of homosexuality.

The Full Monty 7-18 May / Lyceum www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Based on his smash hit film and adapted for the stage by Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy, this hilarious and heartfelt production has received standing ovations every night and won the prestigious UK Theatre Award. Featuring Gary Lucy who has made the part of Gaz his own, with an all-star cast of Andrew Dunn, Louis Emerick, Joe Gill, Kai Owen and James Redmond with songs by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones you really should… drop absolutely everything and book today!

Hot stuff YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT... AND EVERYTHING ELSE. WE SPEAK TO STAR OF THE FULL MONTY GARY LUCY AHEAD OF HIS APPEARANCE AT SHEFFIELD’S LYCEUM. THE ‘lunchbox’ has, indeed, landed. Sheffield theatre-goers are invited to leave their hat for the return of The Full Monty to the Lyceum from 7-18 May. Telling the story of six out-of-work, impoverished steelworkers from Sheffield with nothing to lose, the Simon Beaufoy play has become one of Britain’s most successful stage shows featuring iconic songs by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones. Produced by multi-award winning theatre producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers and directed by Rupert Hill, the all-star cast will be led again by Gary Lucy (Hollyoaks, EastEnders, The Bill, Footballers’s Wives, winner of Dancing On Ice). There’s a strong Hollyoaks connection too with the likes of Kai Owen (Torchwood, Hollyoaks) as Dave; and James Redmond (Hollyoaks, Casualty) as Guy, joining him on stage. Andrew Dunn (Dinnerladies, Bremner, Bird & Fortune) as Gerald; Louis Emerick (Coronation Street, Benidorm, Brookside, Last of the Sumer Wine) as Horse; and Joe Gill (Emmerdale) as Lomper make up the rest of the crew. Joining them will be Liz Carney as Jean, Amy Thompson as Mandy, Bryonie Pritchard as Linda and Keeley Fitzgerald as Sharon. Through these women we see the other side of the story, the challenging journies they face to stand by their men and how they ultimately take their hats off to them all. Gary Lucy has been playing Gaz in the touring stage production since September 2014, his first and only stage role to date; it’s clearly a role he enjoys. We caught up the TV-turned-stage star to find out more. What have been your career highlights? The Hollyoaks rape storyline. It was a real baptism of fire, I was only 17. It was the first time male rape had been covered on British television and it was extremely well received. I won best newcomer at the British Soap Awards. Footballers Wives… it was living the dream. The Full Monty was my first stage job. It would be difficult to follow so I’m not sure I’d do another one. When you were training or not acting, what other jobs have you done? Anything unusual/interesting? I was a market trader. My mum and dad had market stalls and I did it as a Saturday job. But not for long... I got Dream Team for Sky One when I was 16. I also had a property company in Europe. It went well for a while, we had good run in Mallorca, Italy, Spain, Portugal. But eventually, like many others, we got caught by the financial crash because people stopped buying. What hobbies/interests do you have? Football , strip clubs, casinos… LOL. What songs do you have on your gym playlist? Any old garage tunes. Do you have a favourite song to dance to? Not really. Any of the Irish/Christmas songs. Anything that evokes a memory. Things like Danny Boy, The Pogues. Do you have a favourite type of food/restaurant? I love all food. I think Italian is my favourite and a good fry-up for hangovers! And I do like a Guinness. Do you have a guilty pleasure? Wouldn’t you like to know! Who would you like to see do The Full Monty? Posh and Becks.

A decade of laughs AS THE EVERLY PREGNANT BROTHERS CELEBRATE THEIR TEN-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, RICHARD ABBEY SPOKE TO SINGER SHAUN DOANE ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE PLANNING TO MARK A DECADE OF POP PARODY FAVOURITES.

So far, so secretive. Already confirmed in the coming months are gigs at Holmfirth’s Picture Drome (11 May), Barrow Hill Beer Festival in Chesterfield (18 May) and Fibber’s in York (1 June). Then there’s the small matter of Tramlines (19-21 July) before gigs at the O2 Academy Islington (20 September) and Birdwell Club in Barnsley (4 October) and not forgetting the Brothers’ annual Christmas bash in December, which, this year, could be a bit special. “It’s still under wraps but there’s a bit of a plan going off,” reveals Shaun. “It’ll be all-singing, all-dancing, bells and whistles, we’re really going to go to town on trying to get special guests involved, just to make it one to remember.” Sandwiched in the midst of all that are plans to release another Everly Pregnant Brothers album, hopefully before the band take to the Tramlines stage. “There’s near enough an album’s worth already written,” says Shaun. “We’ll be covering Kylie, Fleetwood Mac, more David Bowie, we might do a Talk Talk one… and we’re covering The Beatles’ Dear Prudence, that’s going to be all about students. It’s just the usual fodder – beer, pies and bodily functions.” So far, so Brothers. If last year’s Tramlines gig was anything to go by, this year should be a riot, especially for fans of some of their older material – “We’re bringing back a couple of old ones. For anybody who’s a fan of Losing My Best Pigeon, it’s coming back into the set.” Part of the Brothers’ charm is their ability to relate to the

IT’S hard to think that something that started off as ‘just a laugh’ will be this year celebrating its tenth anniversary. When the Everly Pregnant Brothers – Shaun Doane, Pete McKee, Toby Foster and friends – picked up their ukeleles and took to the stage at Art in the Gardens in September 2009, little did they know that they’d pick up a cult following over the years, not just in Sheffield and Yorkshire but much further afield. Their parodies of popular songs with a Sheffield twist have become sing-a-long anthems at pubs, concert venues and festivals up and down the country. If you’ve not heard No Oven, No Pie, Chip Pan or Hendo’s, you’re missing out. “I think we’re quite chuffed it’s lasted this long,” beams frontman Shaun Doane, or ‘Big Shaun’ as he’s perhaps more commonly known. “It started off as a laugh, it was never meant to be this huge behemoth it’s become. “We’ve got fans right across the board, literally from kids and teenagers right through to people in their eighties that love what we do.” So what will they be doing to mark this most momentous of occasions? “We want to do bits and pieces throughout the year,” regales Shaun, as we tuck into a full English at the Harland Café just off Bramall Lane. “But the actual date is around 4 September, because that’s when we did Art in the Gardens. We’ve got a few ideas. It’s probably going to be a kind of pop-up, guerrilla gig where we just turn up and play.”

“We’ll be covering Kylie, Fleetwood Mac, more David Bowie, we might do a Talk Talk one… It’s just the usual fodder – beer, pies and bodily functions.” and tells the story of how a local family were affected by the World War One conflict. He played a sergeant major in the recruiting office as well as a tunneller and narrator, an experience he describes as “awesome”. Also awesome is the fact that Shaun recently turned 50, something he is embracing with open arms (and after a little kick up the backside from a very good friend). “Fifty’s the new 30,” he grins. “My fifties are going to be like my thirties should have been, only better. I’m going to push myself out there a bit more, I’m not going to wait for the world to come to me. “Toby Foster has been responsible for a massive change in me. He said to me a couple of years ago, you’re big problem is, tha spends too much time thinking ‘can I do this?’ You’re better off just going out and doing it. I stand to that.” We mop up the last of our breakfasts with bread and butter and drain our mugs of tea (coffee for him), then head out into the rain to shoot a few pictures before going our separate ways. As we’re finishing up, a family come over to him, confess that they’re big fans and ask if they can have a picture. “No problem,” he says. “Rich, can you do the honours?”

everyday working man (and woman). They come across as normal blokes having a bit of a laugh who haven’t let a bit of success go to their heads. Stop Shaun in the street for a selfie and he’ll happily oblige, in fact, he positively encourages it. “I’d love to be famous, that’s why anybody gets into entertaining,” explains Shaun. “If I did get to a point where I was really well known, I’d love it. I’m only Z-list but I can’t walk around town without someone stopping me. Can you imagine being Bono? Bono can’t go to Sainsbury’s, he can’t go for a pint because he’s going to be mobbed. I think I’d embrace it, I’d enjoy it because I like people. “The worse thing for me was someone who knew who you were and didn’t want to know you. I don’t mind people not liking me, at least they have an opinion, but if someone’s completely indifferent to you, that’s the biggest insult of all.” When he’s not front and centre performing with the Brothers, Shaun is also in a band with former bandmate Toby Foster and will be playing at the Wentworth Music Festival on 15 June. He’s also a comedian, DJ, presenter, photographer, guest speaker and, most recently, actor. Shaun is a man who likes to keep busy (“my brain needs to be occupied” he admits) and after taking up an invitation, appeared in the Crucible Studio production of Me Brother, Dan, which was written by Sheffield schoolgirl Molly Meleady-Hanley

What lies beneath? EARLIER this month, Ashley Birch got the chance to explore the city’s underground network of Victorian storm drains, getting his feet wet in what’s referred to locally as the Megatron. The awe-inspiring network of tunnels and waterways, which stretches for miles and miles under the city’s railway station, has been opened up to the public for the first time ever this spring, as part of this year’s Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, which is part of the wider Festival of the Outdoors. Urban explorers have been given the chance to delve deep into the depths of the industrial revolution, when Sheffield’s rivers were built over to make way for factories, railway stations and car parks, creating a subterranean network of cavernous culverts. Entering from an opening behind BBC Radio Sheffield, on Shoreham Street, we were treated to a glimpse of the hidden rivers, as well as an underground acoustic performance and a pop-up screening of Low Line, a fantastic short film by Ed Birch, documenting a group of wakeboarders taking on the Megatron. Hopefully these maiden tours will lead to a larger series of tours, giving more people the chance to take in the amazing spectacle. But, if you do get the chance, we recommend investing in some good quality wellies.

Party atmosphere WENTWORTH MUSIC FESTIVAL IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST AND BEST SMALL FESTIVAL EXPERIENCES OF THE SUMMER – AND IT’S PERFECT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. BY CHRIS WILSON. WENTWORTH Music Festival is back for its third year on Saturday 15 June with the promise of being better than ever, while staying firmly in touch with the family-friendly reputation that won it a special place in the hearts of local people. There can be few music events in the country with a more spectacular setting. The backdrop is Wentworth Woodhouse, Europe’s biggest privately owned country house and subject to an ongoing £130million-plus masterplan aimed at restoring it to its former glory. As well as being steeped in history Wentworth Woodhouse has been used as a backdrop to many huge films and TV productions, most recently ITV’s Victoria and the big screen Winston Churchill film The Finest Hour. But as big names like Tony Hadley (formerly of Spandau Ballet), Republica and Doctor and the Medics prepare to bring their music to the grounds of this amazing 18th century mansion, the driving forces behind the event are determined to maintain a strong link to the community. “Keep it local. Keep it small. Keep it family friendly,” says Matt Foster, one of the organisers. Around 1,800 people attended the first event in 2017 and that figure rose to over 3,000 last year. They’re on target for a 5,000-capacity sell-out this year and that, Matt reckons, is just about perfect. “We lost a pot load of money first time around and a decent amount last year,” he says. “This year we aim to break even and we will. “We’ve already sold over 3,000 tickets and you usually sell 70 per cent of tickets in the last three months for events like this, so we are delighted with the response.” Obviously the spectacular setting means there is potential for the festival to expand, but while future events may involve extra days and overnight camping, Tony Hadley Matt reckons bringing more people onto

the site would not necessarily be an improvement. “If we sold 10,000 tickets it might mean more revenue and bigger names but it also might spoil the unique atmosphere of the festival,” he says. There will be four stages in total. The main stage will host the big names and topping the bill is Tony Hadley, who was lead singer with Spandau Ballet, one of the most successful groups of the new romantic era of British pop. With big hits like Gold, True and Chant No. 1, He’s sure to bring the festival to a rousing finale. Also on the main stage will be Doctor and the Medics, who had an international hit with their cover of Spirit in the Sky in 1986 and Republica, best known for their nineties hit Ready To Go. Sheffield-based songwriter and music producer Eliot Kennedy, who has worked with everyone from the Spice Girls to Bryan Adams, will also be on the main stage along with special guests, while Abba Revival and Soul Sensation will add to the fun. More big names are set to be announced over the coming weeks. There is also a second music stage for new and unsigned bands and two comedy stages, one for grown-ups (and with Toby Foster’s involvement some fantastic talent is guaranteed) and one for kids. Confirmed names for the comedy stage so far include Rob Rouse, Ivan Brackenbury, Neil Fitzmaurice, Nina Gilligan and Justin Moorhouse. It all adds up to potentially the biggest and best small festival experience of the summer. And it’s right here on the doorstep.

The soundtrack to your summer HE’S SLICKER THAN THE AVERAGE AND HEADING TO A RACECOURSE NEAR YOU. WE CAUGHT UP WITH CRAIG DAVID AHEAD OF HIS SUMMER APPEARANCE AT MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE. “I am so grateful to be able to get up and write songs every day, record them and then get to play them live. All of my albums are like family members to me, all with different personalities. Chart positions aren’t part of that equation when I’m recording but I am always grateful when people buy my music and having top five albums is a very nice bonus.”

REWIND to summer 2018, the sun is just going down over Hillsborough Park and the crowd were wondering what had hit ‘em. Craig David’s TS5 went down a storm, tapping into the feel good summer vibes with some classic RnB anthems from back in the day. Now the singer is heading back up north to perform at Market Rasen Racecourse on Friday 17 August, in collaboration with the Jockey Club Live. Ahead of his summer appearance, we caught up with Craig to see what he’s got planned for this year. *** Craig is thrilled; having played Newmarket and Aintree last year, so can’t wait to bring the noise back to the final furlongs. He recalled: “The feeling and passion from the crowd was amazing and I can’t wait to do it all again this year! “I love watching and playing all sports, but my biggest passion is Southampton FC, and one day soon they’ll be playing in Europe up there with the best where they belong. “Absolutely I WILL be making a day of it and hanging around, it’s always a great day and lots of fun although I don’t think I’ll be betting. I’m sure my manager will most certainly be placing a few. “As for my show, there are always surprises in store, and if you have a fear of missing out then don’t miss this show.” The TS5 brand began life in Craig’s Miami apartment and grew organically into a thousandsstrong party around the legendary Ibiza Rocks pool. Last year every single party sold out in advance and it’s off to a similar start for its return in summer 2019. The really incredible thing is that it shifted the clubbing demographic, turning the whole Balearic hedonism concept on its head from all-night clubbing to all-day. He laughed: “TS5 started in my flat in Miami with just a few friends coming over before we went out on a Friday night. In between doing shots I was spinning some tracks and it got to the point where more people where coming to me for the pre-evening party than going out after so IT became the party! It really was as organic as that and it’s something I love doing.

Tickets are priced from £20 and are on sale now – visit http://marketrasen.thejockeyclub.co.uk for more. Market Rasen Racecourse and Dents Coaches have teamed up to provide a swift and comfortable return service from Sheffield on the day. Please note tickets must be booked in advance and spaces are limited! Sheffield – Collecting from the Bus Station off Harmer Lane (National Express Bays), at 1pm with return departure 10.45pm from The Racecourse. Price £25 per person.

JUST how good was it? We’re talking about Tramlines 2018 of course and the unswerving success of its move to Hillsborough Park. Despite the trams choosing that weekend to go on strike, the sun shone, music played, ale was drunk, street food was scoffed and a good time was had by all. Two Door Cinema Club What were your highlights? Was it the Stereophonics rising out of the extended runway stage on the drizzly Friday night? Noel Gallagher dropping a few Oasis bombs as the sun went down on the Saturday or Craig David tapping into the summery feel good vibes on the Sunday? Then there was Tom Grennan, Milburn, Clean Bandit, Shed Seven, Blossoms… the list goes on. So the big question is, how do Tramlines top it? Can 2019 be better than last year? Here’s hoping. “Following on from the amazing party that was our tenth Courteeners birthday, we’ve been working hard to make the festival better and to find artists that we’re excited about,” said Tramlines operations director Timm Cleasby. “I think we have some great artists that span generations. There’s more to come too, including, as usual, some great Sheffield favourites and new talent. I can’t wait, it’s going to be awesome and I hope everyone will join us for Sheffield’s biggest party.” Confirmed artists for the festival, which will be held on the weekend of 19-21 July, include headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners and Nile Rogers & Chic. Expect crowdpleasing tracks such as ‘What You Know’, ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘Everybody Dance’ respectively, when these acts take to the Tramlines main stage. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers, with an impressive 13 albumsworth of material; Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, with his unique, soulful tones that appear in a fresh new setting on latest single ‘Giant’ with Calvin Harris; the highly anticipated return of indie outfit Doves after a nine-year hiatus; Madchester scene leaders the

Happy Mondays; Sheffield heavyweights Reverend and the Makers; Miles Kane; Circa Waves, Lewis Capaldi; hedonistic South London four-piece Shame; and Peter Hook and the Light who will be performing New Order’s ‘Technique’ and ‘Republic’ live plus Joy Division material. Continuing the not-to-be-missed acts is the Paul Weller-mentored The Rifles, Britpop rock band Sleeper – who are set to return with their first album in almost two decades – and the Everly Pregnant Brothers, who’ll bring their hilarious spoof covers. This comes alongside some of the finest UK emerging talents: the BBC Sound Of 2019 nominated Sea Girls; Liverpool four-piece Clean Cut Kid; Sports Team whose new track ‘M5’ was premiered by Annie Mac on Radio 1, and Easy Life who made it into Radio X’s Best New Bands for 2019 list. The breaking talent list continues with whenyoung, Another Sky, Anteros, Bloxx, Hey Charlie, Bedroom High Club, and flying the flag for Sheffield and South Yorkshire, Casey Lowry, Oddity Road, The Reytons, The Wired, The Seamonsters, Cora Pearl, and Children Of The State. Tramlines 2019 will again feature a side-splitting comedy line up programmed by the Leadmill, and its Into The Trees familyfriendly area will return with even more activities and entertainment than before. Fourth Tier tickets are now sold out, with a limited amount of Fifth Tier tickets still available - priced at £75.50 plus a booking fee. VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. HERE COMES THE SECOND WAVE...

JUST as we were about to go to press, organisers have revealed the latest additions to the eleventh instalment of the city’s Tramlines festival, joining headliners, Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, and Nile Rogers and Chic. The ‘Just Added’ list includes Johnny Marr – best known as the Smiths guitarist and co-songwriter (alongside Morrissey) – and well-known Radio1 DJ, Annie Mac. Returning to Tramlines for the second year is Tom Grennan who played the Leadmill tent last year, with tracks from his hit album ‘Lighting Matches’. The three-day festival will also see local talent with the Sheffield brother-duo Drenge, as well as Good Cop Bad Cop – the new project from Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders and Joe Carnall. Also performing across the four stages will be post-punk group The Futureheads, BBC Sound Of list winners Jade Bird and The Japanese House and Becky Hill, known for a number of chart-toppers, including collaborations with Rudimental, MK, and Little Smiz. Tramlines’ ‘New Talent’ bill also features She Drew the Gun, JAWS, Marsicans, BlackWaters, October Drift, Balcony, and Man & The Echo.

WANT TO PLAY AT TRAMLINES FESTIVAL? APPLICATIONS to play Sheffield’s biggest party, Tramlines, are now open. Both bands and solo artists are again given the opportunity to bag a spot on the on the Tramlines bill alongside legendary acts such as Nile Rogers & Chic, Two Door Cinema Club and Courteeners. An expert panel including This Feeling, BBC Introducing, as well as Tramlines organisers and the festival crowd itself will choose a handful of acts to be added to the line-up. Operations Director at Tramlines, Tim Cleasby tells us: “We’ve always championed new and local talent at Tramlines. Last year was a massive success with slots being filled by Universal Tree, Little Grace and Saint Petersburg to name a few. It’s been a highlight for me every year and this year will be no different.” For the chance to play the 30,000 capacity festival, entrants must have recorded original material, which is available for the judging panel to stream via Spotify or Soundlcoud. Winners will be selected to play across four music stages: the Main Stage, T’Other Stage, the Leadmill, and the Breaking Talent ‘Library Stage’. Martin and Jane moved in together 10 years ago and after a few months purchased their first flat and agreed that they would own it jointly. Jane put in an £80,000 deposit (left to her by her grandmother). They both contributed to the household bills, and Jane paid most of the mortgage and did most of the food shopping. Unfortunately they did not live happily ever after. Martin met someone else. Julia immediately moved out to stay with a friend. Martin refused to move out and did not agree to sell the property for years -

until Jane threatened to go to court. Many people still believe that the law gives them some protection as “common law” husband and wife. Unfortunately there is no such legal concept. Jane received 50% of the value of the house despite contributing almost £100,000 more than Martin. A declaration of trust over their house could have protected Jane as it may have provided for the proceeds of any sale to be split in accordance with their contributions. It may not be very romantic but if you are thinking of buying a house together make sure you ask your conveyancer to give early legal advice about what to do if things go wrong in the future. IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) has been helping couples conceive for just over 40 years. During this time, great strides have been made in the field of assisted conception and over six million babies have been born worldwide as a result of these ground breaking treatments.. Leading the way for South Yorkshire is Jessop Fertility, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The Assisted Conception Unit opened in 2001, and over the last 17 years, has helped thousands of patients achieve their dream of becoming a family by using the latest treatments and technological advances. The use of the latest technology has led to considerable improvements in the chance of treatment being successful and the latest figures speak for themselves. This year Jessop Fertility have had their best ever results showing that, overall, 48.6 per cent of IVF treatment cycles (in women aged 18-45) will result in a clinical pregnancy. In addition, 51 per cent of patients have embryos suitable for freezing, which can be used at a later date. One of the most important recent developments has been the introduction of the latest state-of-theart time-lapse incubators. This enables embryos to be placed in an incubator where their development is uninterrupted and can be monitored closely. This allows the scientists to select the embryo that has the best chance of achieving a pregnancy. Whether you are receiving IVF through the NHS or are funding it yourself, all treatments at Jessop Fertility include time-lapse technology,

embryo glue and early pregnancy monitoring. As well as IVF, Jessop Fertility offers a full range of fertility treatments, including a comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and treatments involving donor sperm and eggs. The unit is about to launch a PreImplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) service. The PGS service involves the careful removal of a few cells from the outside of an embryo to check that it has the correct number of chromosomes. Davina Hulme is a Senior Embryologist at Jessop Fertility and has many years’ experience in this technique. She explains: “By ensuring that the embryo has the correct genetic makeup, we can select the embryo with the best chance of becoming a healthy baby. This treatment may benefit some patients who have had repeated unsuccessful treatments, or some older patients and will help improve the already fantastic results at Jessop Fertility.” Jessop Fertility also offers a PreImplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) service for couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic condition. Currently this service is offered as a satellite service alongside Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. With the PGD service, the genetic team work alongside the fertility team in the Jessop Wing. The patients are prepared for treatment in Sheffield and when they are ready for their eggs to be harvested, they travel to Guy’s in London for the egg collection and for

43

the embryos to be tested. Jonathan Skull, the clinical lead at Jessop Fertility explains: “We work with Guys in a satellite capacity throughout, but our patients still need to travel down to London for some aspect of their treatment. “With the development of our embryo biopsy service it means that we will soon be able to offer all the treatment in Sheffield, which will make the whole process quicker and easier for patients, with no need to travel elsewhere.” Although the latest developments are exciting and lead to an improved chance of pregnancy, Jonathan added: “The most important aspect of treatment is that we treat patients with sensitivity and compassion. All our team strive to provide the best possible care and support to our patients through what can be a very stressful and emotionally demanding experience.” If you would like to find out more about any of the treatments or the brand new PGS service coming to Jessop Fertility this autumn, call 0114 226 8501 to speak to a member of the team or send a message via the website at www.jessopfertility.org.uk. Taking shape WITH PHASE ONE ALMOST COMPLETE, ATTENTION NOW TURNS TO THE NEXT STAGES OF THE HEART OF THE CITY II PROJECT. pleased to have secured the go ahead on Blocks B and C of this significant scheme. The two blocks will transform the Pinstone Street retail scene and add more much-needed quality office space and new homes. “The Council and our strategic development partner Queensberry would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to submit constructive comments on the plans and help influence the direction of the final design. “With HSBC’s new flagship Sheffield office and the Charter Square public realm nearing completion, as well as the recently announced US investment in Block F, we are starting to see some real momentum across the Heart of the City II scheme. The city centre will soon have a new district boasting a mix of highquality retail, residential and office space to be proud of.” In further announcements, HLM Architects will undertaking the development of Block A, the city block on Pinstone Street that is the gateway to the Heart of the City II district from the east. FCBStudios has also been appointed as architect for ‘Block H’, a mixed-use leisure scheme at the heart of the project. Philip Watson, Director and Head of Design at HLM Architects, said: “As a major UK practice which had its first base in Sheffield, being part of its regeneration is a great honour. “It’s a unique project with a significance that is affirmed by the 35 plus practices who wanted to be considered as part of the design competition. “Our successful design reflects our own understanding of this great UK city as well a quality of architecture that marries the respect of the old and the potential of the new.”

AS phase one of Sheffield’s Heart of the City II moves towards completion, the next two blocks – Laycock House and the Pepper Pot – in the city-centre regeneration scheme have been granted approval. The proposals for Block B and Block C were originally presented at public consultation events back in September 2018 and submitted to the local planning authority in November 2018. Block B and Block C front on to Pinstone Street and the approved designs, drawn up by Leonard Design Architects, include retaining the attractive Victorian façades of the existing buildings, whilst redeveloping and expanding the structures behind them. The plans for Block B, which incorporates Laycock House – a late Victorian building which has more or less survived completely intact, include the sensitive renovation of the residences and smaller retail units within Laycock House. The current existing courtyard behind the building will be reimagined as a welcoming city garden, with a café proposed for the ground floor unit. There will also be four new retail units at ground floor level and 52 apartments across the seven floors above, delivering a high-quality residential offer in a superb location. Block C sits between Pinstone Street, Cambridge Street and Charles Street, alongside the soon-to-be completed Block D, which is home to the new HSBC office. Known locally as the Pepper Pot, the plans include five retail units on the ground floor and 37,000 sq ft of premium Grade A office space on the seven floors above. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are extremely

Fargate Sheffield City Council has announced plans to consult over the summer on a new identity for Fargate and neighbouring High Street, which includes improved public spaces, kiosks and seated areas, and a new emphasis on entertainment and city centre living, alongside its excellent shops and retail outlets. To achieve the vision the council is proposing to consult with owners and occupiers in Fargate in partnership with the Business Improvement District, with a view to redesigning shop fronts and look at the current planning guidance to make changes, where possible. It will also allow more restaurant uses with defined outdoor seating areas and encourage the use of the upper floors for a mixture of residential, commercial, community and healthbased uses through a review of policy, improved seating and work with the universities on new public spaces.

In recognition of his long years of service to the Mi Amigo memorial in Endcliffe Park, which attracted global interest in the city and led to a memorable flypast, Sheffield City Council have announced plans to give 83-year-old Tony Foulds legend status and his very own plaque outside Sheffield Town Hall. The plans were announced by Councillor Julie Dore, leader of the council, who said: “Many citizens from Sheffield make a significant impact at national and international level. “Tony Foulds, with the help of BBC presenter Dan Walker, put Sheffield well and truly on the world map with a magnificent flypast organised by the US Airforce and Royal Air Force together with the council, BBC Breakfast, South Yorkshire Police and many others. “We want to thank Tony and the many many others who are so passionate about our city and make Sheffield a great city.” Sheffield Legends honour those who have achieved national or international acclaim who come from the city. Their plaques are in front of the Town Hall and include actor Sean Bean, musicians Def Leppard and athlete Sebastian Coe.

Their pictures and memories are set to adorn the pages of a forthcoming book and play centre-stage at a ‘Back To The Roxy’ reunion party held at the 02 Academy on Saturday 4 May. Local author Neil Anderson has put the call out for people’s photos and memories of the venue that dominated the club scene for much of the 80s and 90s for a brand new Roxy edition of his best-selling ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1980s Sheffield’. The very best pictures will also adorn the big screen at the reunion which is set to transport clubbers back to the heyday of the venue.

The Festival of Debate will also feature a wide range of smaller events delivered in association with over 60 partner organisations, from talks, panel discussions and workshops to film screenings, spoken word and stand-up comedy, all exploring ideas around society and politics. For the first time the Festival will also include three ‘hub days’, day-long events comprised of a number of smaller sessions exploring three of this year’s key strands – Our Democracy, Our Planet and Living Together – and concluding with a larger performance or public event.
