WELCOME
WELCOME TO VIBE QUARTERLY...
SEASON’S greetings and welcome to this winter edition of VIBE magazine. We’re hoping you’re well into the Christmas mood by now but if not, grab yourself a mulled wine and mince pie and find out what’s in store over the coming weeks. Theatre and pantomime plays a huge part in the festive period, whether you’ve got children or not. Let’s face it, we’re all big kids really, aren’t we? Sheffield Theatres is home to two cracking Christmas productions this year in Kiss Me Kate (Crucible) and Peter Pan (Lyceum). We spoke to leading choreographer Matt Flint and former soap star Wendi Peters to find out what’s in store. When you’re out about over the next few weeks, you’ll no doubt fancy a drink or two. Micropubs seem to be springing up left, right and centre – we look at some of the best and why they’ve become such a phenomenon. Musically, we were sat in the office wondering how 2019 can top 2018. We look at who could make a big impression, including Sheffield’s very own Rebecca Lucy Taylor, formerly of Slow Club, who sets out on her own as Self Esteem. We also spoke to a Sheffield music legend who has a new album and tour; you’d think after 50 years in the music business, playing with the likes of Eric Clapton, Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics amongst others, not much would intimidate Paul Carrack, but you’d be wrong. Elsewhere we speak to illustrator Josephine Dellow about her Very Sheffield Colouring Book (amongst other things) and look at a new addition to the city which is great news for gamers – the National Videogame Museum. You can twiddle your thumbs to your heart’s content. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish our publishing manager Melanie Jackson a fond farewell as she leaves for pastures new. She’ll be missed! Richard Abbey Editor

Small but perfectly formed THE MICROPUB IS QUICKLY BECOMING KING. WE LOOK AT WHY SMALL BARS ARE ON THE RISE AND PICK OUT SOME TOP DRINKING SPOTS FOR YOU TO SAMPLE – IF YOU CAN SQUEEZE IN.
PUBS have had a raw deal over the last few years, with many struggling to move with the times. Closures have become ever more apparent, with almost one if four ceasing trading in the last ten years. The craft ale ‘revolution’ has breathed new life into the pub trade, particularly in Sheffield where we are often credited as being the world’s Craft Ale Capital. Forget your pint of Carling, you can now choose from
locally-brewed Saisons to IPAs from North America and beyond. City drinkers are truly spoilt for choice. As an aside to this rise in popularity of craft beers and real ales has been the inception of the micropub. Small, but perfectly formed, you usually see them springing up in old shop units – think one room with a bar at one end serving a constantly-revolving mix of cask, keg and bottled beers. Some even offer rare collections of gins or
whiskies meaning they cater to every taste. You might get the feeling you’ve walked into someone’s front room but one thing that they do guarantee – apart from beer – is a cosy atmosphere, something lacking in many pubs today. Who says size matters? Over recent months Sheffield has been inundated with the opening of lots of little drinking holes. We look at some of the city’s best.
THE ALE CLUB
BARROWBOY
BAR STEWARDS
The Brew Foundation’s first brewery tap. The Ecclesall Ale Club is a cosy micro pub and bottle shop; its décor is inspired by old school private members clubs –so lots of dark wood, low level lighting and lots of curios to look at whilst having a pint.
Conveniently located on Abbeydale Road, this former paintshop has hit the spot for craft beers, wines and cocktails. Throw in some bao buns and tasty street food and you’re onto a winner.
A stone’s throw from Kelham Island, this independent bar and bottle shop is run by Alan and Charlie. Besides a hand-picked selection of real ales and craft beers, you can also enjoy top quality lagers, ciders, wines and spirits.

FOOD & DRINK
NOW A YEAR IN, LANCE WORTHINGTON HAS GIVEN ECCLESALL ROAD’S PORTLAND HOUSE A NEW OUTLOOK. How do you stand out from the crowd? Although ours is a micropub we have a comparatively large product range. We now have nine keg lines and six cask lines that change constantly. We have a huge range of gins sometimes totaling 50 different brands split in to five categories. We have carefully selected 12 wines on our wine list and a wide selection of rums, whiskies and bourbons. I think the new decor, furniture and graphics have given what was a real ale pub and turned it into quite a fusion of beer, gin, wine and rum. Our beers are not just for the hardened hop testers, we have a range of brand lagers, ales and ciders too. I think my favourite of the comments we’ve received was “charming little bar with a style and class that won’t break the bank.”
What changes have you made? Firstly I changed all the beers and changed the bar to accommodate twice the amount of spirits we could stock. I also installed a new chest fridge to stock a large range of bottled and canned ales, beers, ciders and a range of gluten and alcohol-free products. I also installed an extra toilet as the previous tenant only had one that ladies and gents shared. We all know that can’t work well. I also changed all the furniture and decorated inside and out and installed new lighting giving the whole place a new look and feel. That’s the additions that the customers see. The cellar has been revamped with pump-assisted cask lines, a new line chiller and six new keg lines. To display the constantly changing beer range I installed a 60” screen that I can change the contents of remotely as the products change. We also have a 16-page gin reference guide and drinks list with current prices and information on garnishes and mixers. The new outside seating area, canopy and cafe banners have made the bar look much more welcoming from the outside and provided a smoking zone. Previously many people were confused as to whether Portland House was a cafe or a bar but the new look has definitely turned it into a bar. The main thing that I’m proud of though are the staff. I have a very enviable team here now.
What’s your background? I was born and raised in Sheffield. I went to Newcastle Uni to study marketing and after a spell travelling I started a marketing company specialising in graphic design and print, which I did for 20 years. I then bought a photography studio on Queens Road and added photography to the services. I also set up a portraiture company called Neo Photography. I still work as a commercial photographer. What plans do you have for the future? I’m looking for a chef or cook to create a menu that will suit the bar’s style and our compact kitchen and add coffee to the drinks list. I’m also looking for a site to set up a second micropub.
What makes micropubs so charming? Micropubs are a more personal and intimate version of a typical pub. We have a built up a fantastic collection of customers that we have come to know well over the past year and it’s these that make our place special. Yeah it looks nice now but it’s the clients that create the special vibe we have here. OK, our wonderful hosting and great personalities help a bit.
Doing anything for Christmas/New Year? Our trimmings are up and we’re looking festive. As the cold weather closes in we’ll be changing our beer range to suit. Belgian Blue has been on a month now and we’ll adding a cappuccino stout this week. We also have mulled cider and wine.

THE BEER HOUSE
BRASS MONKEY
BREWER & HOP
Can be credited as Sheffield’s first micropub. Numerous awards including mentions in the Good Beer Guide for the last two years. There’s two rooms and a decent size bar, as well as a decent terrace at the front for those warmer days.
This one has literally just opened its doors. The craft beer and artisan gin bar is the hillsborough’s first micropub and occupies and enviable location overlooking the park. Pre-Tramlines ale anyone?
Nether Edge café and micropub run by husband and wife team, Lauren and Dom. If the sun shines, their quaint beer garden is the perfect spot to enjoy and ale or two.

THE DRINK INN
GUZZLE
ITCHY PIG ALE HOUSE
Whilst most micropubs seem to be on the outskirts of the city centre, this one bucks the trend. A cosy bar serving a range of cask, keg and bottled beers with a selection of wines and spirits.
One of the newer additions in the Woodseats area of the city. Big emphasis on locally-brewed cask and keg ales. Comfortable little bolt hole that’s perfect for a pint or two (and maybe a pork pie).
Broomhill’s first micropub has been a big hit. We like the bar top made out of copper coins – and the beer of course. Relaxed atmosphere and dogs are welcome, which is ok in our book.

PORTLAND HOUSE
SPORT SHACK
WALKLEY BEER CO.
A recent refurb has given this former bakery (if memory serves me right) a new lease of life. It’s under new ownership too, with Lance Worthington taking over the reins from Welbeck Abbey Brewery. Features a good selection of ales as well as rums, gins and more.
Not so much a micropub but a micro sports bar. The Ecclesall Road is touted to be the first of many. Expect Sky Sports, BT Sports and much more to cater for all sports fans. They do beer too.
A micropub in the loosest sense; an off-licence with something special: sit down drinking! Cask and bottled beer can be enjoyed off and on the premises. Cask is available to take home in two-pint cartons or you can bring in your own vessel to be filled.

Underwater journey DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF THE OCEANS IN AN ARENA TOUR WITH A DIFFERENCE – BLUE PLANET II LOOKS LIKE BEING NEXT YEAR’S BIG THING. AND ‘JAMMY’ YORKSHIRE LASS ANITA RANI CAN’T WAIT TO BE A PART OF IT, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. “The whole thing is going to be a very powerful, overwhelming experience for anyone who comes along to see the show,” explains Anita. “Even though it’s huge, with thousands of people in the auditorium, it should have a real intimacy about it, we’re all going on a deep sea journey together. “The key thing about it is it’s family entertainment. We want it to be cross-generational, we want you to have the experience that you have at home watching it with the whole family and for people to walk out there talking about it. “But it’s more than just a show they’ll talk about, it’ll be a feeling they’ll have forever. Can you imagine being able to come and see something like this at the age of eight? It’ll be one of those moments in your life you’ll never forget.” There’s no surprise that Anita, like many of us, was a huge fan of the series. “You’re watching it and you cannot believe what you’re seeing,” she says. “There was one scene with a squid that could change its colour and can camouflage itself. That’s real, that’s actually happening, that’s not CGI, it’s not Pixar-animated… it really puts us as a human race in perspective. It’s very humbling.” In the short time I spent speaking with Anita it was clear that she is hugely passionate about this next career step, she’s bubbly, bright and still retains plenty of that Yorkshire sense of humour. When I raised the point about spending 13 weeks on tour she was positively ecstatic: “I’ll be on that bus raising hell! Watch out Nottingham, watch out Leeds, there’ll be TVs flying out of hotel room windows… I can’t wait!” Of course you don’t need to be from Yorkshire to recognise her tongue was planted firmly in cheek during that exchange but you get the sense she’s fun to be around and will always have a cup of Yorkshire tea at hand – she carries a box of teabags with her whenever she’s filming. Aside from preparing for the Blue Planet II tour, Anita has launched her own podcast – It’s Anita Rani – which centres around extraordinary interviews with inspiring people. There’s a couple more TV projects lined up too but in her own words “I can’t talk about them until I can talk about them”. It seems the star that is Anita Rani is very much in the ascendancy.
ake a deep breath and get ready to submerge yourself in Blue Planet II – Live in Concert, the tour which is set to be the big arena event of 2019. As well as winning numerous awards, including a BAFTA, Blue Planet II touched so many people when it aired on BBC One at the start of the year, highlighting not only the majesty but the plight facing our oceans now and in the coming years. The arena tour is a live adaptation of a television story that began some 20 years ago when a team of wildlife filmmakers from the BBC’s natural history unit set out to make a series on the world’s oceans, the breadth and scale of which had never been seen before. During the four-year filming of Blue Planet II, the teams embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries, filmed on all continents and in every ocean. Logistically, some of these expeditions could be compared to a trip in space – such was the effort. Anyone who saw the series, could see that it was worth it. Blue Planet II – Live in Concert will feature the best bits of the series presented on a giant state-of-the-art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The stunning visuals will be complemented by the series’ moving score, which was composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, and will be performed by the 80-piece Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Tying the whole together will be recently-announced host, Anita Rani, who will be taking on an Attenborough-esque role. To say the Bradford-born TV personality was excited at the prospect is something of an understatement. “I’m the jammiest person on Earth at the minute,” she enthused. “It’s one of those moments when, without thinking, you just say ‘yes’. To be part of the Blue Planet II brand, to be deemed good enough to be able to do this, just personally, it’s a big, big moment in my life.” Anita is well known and well liked for her various TV roles, which includes The Edit, Cricket AM, The One Show, Countryfile and Strictly Come Dancing. And she’s (not so) secretly delighted that this tour allows her to live out one of her own personal fantasies. “Come on, who doesn’t want to be Beyonce? A small part of me would love to be Beyonce but I need to accept that’s probably not going to happen but I’m still going to be able to do an arena tour with Blue Planet II. I’m very excited.” So what can audiences expect?

Festive fun YOU CAN’T BEAT A NIGHT AT THE THEATRE... AND SHEFFIELD HAS SOME OF THE BEST PLAYS AND PANTOS ON OFFER. BY RICHARD ABBEY. to. They love it and that’s what’s important.” There’s one person Wendi is particularly looking forward to working with again. “I can’t wait to be back with Damian, we had such a laugh a couple of years ago. I really had a stern talking to myself and said as the Wicked Queen you cannot laugh on stage because that breaks it for the kids. Fortunately with Mrs Darling and Big Chief, I’m quite able to laugh and Damian can make me laugh quite a lot so I’m not so worried this time.”
hristmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to one of Sheffield’s fabulous theatres. And this year you’re spoilt for choice – you’ve got Kiss Me Kate at The Crucible and Peter Pan at the Lyceum. Whether you choose one or both, you’re guaranteed to have a great time [oh yes you are!]. We caught up with a leading light from both sides of Tudor Square to find out what’s in store for the festive season.

antomime is as much part of Christmas as partridges in pear trees – and they don’t come much bigger than the annual show at the Lyceum. “If you’ve seen a Sheffield panto, you’ll know it pulls out all the stops and is a brilliant show,” says Wendi Peters who’ll be taking not one, not two, but three leading roles in the upcoming fun-filled flying adventure, Peter Pan. She will be joined by the likes of Shaun Williamson, Gemma Hunt, David Ribi and legendary dame, Damian Williams. “It’s lovely for me because I normally play the Wicked Queen but this year I’m playing Mrs Darling, Myrtle the Mermaid and Big Chief Squatting Cow, who is Tiger Lily’s mother,” explains Wendi. “I get to do three different roles, three very different characters, which is great fun. I just spend a lot of time changing that’s all.” Wendi is perhaps best recognised for playing Cilla in Coronation street for four years, a role she describes as “pivotal” and “ career changing”. And despite her extensive TV work, theatre remains her main passion. In fact, Sheffield holds many fond memories for Wendi who started her professional career in the city after three years at London Studio Centre, a place she described as “like Fame, all in leg warmers and dancing in the corridors. I loved every minute.” Wendi was cast as a dancer in the pantomime Cinderella at The Crucible in 1987 and returned a couple of years later in Babes in the Wood alongside Sheffield legend, Bobby Knutt. Her Sheffield pantomime pedigree was further enhanced a couple of years ago at the Lyceum – she played the Wicked Queen in Snow White – and she’s positively buzzing about being back this year. It’ll be the second year running she’s done Peter Pan as largely the same team that did the show in Canterbury last year, which received amazing reviews and broke box office records. “There’s everything in it,” beams Wendi. “Fabulous sets, lots of flying acrobats who do the most amazing tricks and everybody is just sensational. Everybody is trained in musical theatre, have fabulous voices, they can all dance, you’re in for a real spectacle. “And because it’s Peter Pan, we have even more kids in it. It’s lovely watching them, doing the shows at Christmas like I used

as giving young dancers incredible opportunities. Which brings us to how Matt first met Louis. “It’s a funny story actually,” Matt says. “ A couple of years ago we found a boy, Louis. What happens to the talented dancers is they get picked up for scholarships to the big performing arts colleges in London. At our event, Louis managed to get a scholarship and now, full circle, has been cast in Kiss Me Kate, which is fantastic.” The show is perfect for the family – “with something in it for everyone” quotes Matt – but the fact that it’s basically a play within a play caused quite a few problems for director Paul Foster and the production team, largely due to the shape of The Crucible stage, which is surrounded on three sides. “What we’re having to do is try and incorporate the scene change within the number which has been a real challenge,” explains Matt. “A lot of the elements are exposed so while the play’s going on on stage, we’re going to see the workings of the Baltimore theatre behind. It’ll be exciting for the audience in that respect.” It all adds up to an exciting night of theatre. Kiss Me Kate is an established play – it’s Cole Porter’s only show to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway – and won the first Tony Award for Best Musical in 1949. Don’t expect this to phase Matt in the slightest though. “Choreography-wise, the show’s been done many times, so I’m really trying to find my own language in it as well and make it original. I’ve not looked at any past productions or anything like that, I’m trying to put my own stamp on it.”
iss Me Kate choreographer Matt Flint has quite the pedigree when it comes to putting together stunning dance routines – he’s worked on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing for the last six or so years as well as Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Children in Need, Comic Relief and Pitch Battle. In fact, he’s had to tear himself away from Strictly to get the cast and crew ready for the play’s opening at The Crucible on 7 December. For the uninitiated, Kiss Me Kate was originally penned by Samuel and Bella Spewack with music from Cole Porter and is a riotous, romantic musical comedy from the Golden Age. The story, set in 1940s Baltimore, involves the production of a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict on and off stage between Fred Graham, the show’s director, producer and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi. “It’s a big, big dance show with loads of different styles of choreography in the show which is exciting for me as well as the audience,” explains Matt. “It’s one of the best written dance pieces in English theatre in my opinion. The cast we’ve got are phenomenal; I’m thrilled with the level of talent that we’ve got, in terms of dance especially. The cast is going to be the secret weapon.” The cast features Edward Baker-Duly as Fred and, a returning face to the Crucible, Rebecca Lock as Lilli. They are joined by the likes of Delroy Atkinson, Cindy Belliot, John Conroy, Dafydd Emyr and a face already familiar to Matt, Louis Gaunt. As an aside to his creative and choreography work, Matt has an events business – Can You Dance? – which hosts big dance conventions around the UK. The conventions feature exhibitions, trade stands, showcases and masterclasses as well

Layton in rehearsals Photos by Manuel Harlan
Everybody’s talking about... Layton Williams Layton Williams is hoping that a run in the Crucible’s production of Kiss me Kate, followed by the starring role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, doesn’t prove to be too darn hot! This Christmas, Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre is staging a classic from the golden age, with a run of the Cole Porterscored Kiss Me Kate, from 7 December to 12 January. The play within a play is set on the opening night of a performance of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, and includes more than a few ‘iconic’ musical numbers for the actors to cut their teeth on. And none more so than London-based Layton Williams, who plays Paul, and is tasked with bringing the major musical number ‘It’s Too Darn Hot’ to life. But the ten-minute-long song isn’t the only thing Layton has to focus on in the coming weeks, as he has just been announced as only the second actor to play Jamie on the West End, in the critically acclaimed Sheffieldbased musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. So we went along to the Crucible for a chat with Layton, to find out more out both productions, starting with Kiss Me Kate: Layton told VIBE: “It's a musical comedy with a bit of everything for everybody. You will go out laughing, but it will move you at times as well. If you love Shakespeare then you will get some of the references but it’s not just for people who like Shakespeare.” Layton has the longest number in the show, so how does he feel about the nine minute long epic of musical theatre? “It’s four-and-a-half minutes of vocals and then it’s straight into choreography, but it feels so natural and organic. Matt Flint, the choreographer is incredible. I’m so happy to work with him.” Then, just two weeks after the end of Kiss Me Kate’s run, he takes on the starring role in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Layton said: “It’s going to be intense. I’m learning my lines in Sheffield, which is really magical actually. I’m learning my character where this show was born, so it feels so right to be here. “Everyone, from the café, to the people at the stage door, to the people in the offices, everyone is so obsessed with Jamie, because it’s their baby. Sheffield is so behind it so I feel like I’ve got a big hug before I go to London from the Sheffield people. “I can’t even fathom it still. I’m so excited.” Layton will be taking over from his best friend John, and becomes the first mixed race actor to take on the role. “I’ll be switching it up,” says Layton: “I’ll be changing the vibe, but that won’t take anything away from the story. It’s just gonna be a mixed race boy’s story this time. “It’s exciting that they’ve made that move and for a lot of people it’s important to be represented. So I’m happy to be fronting that, again!”

trying to get a bit of chemistry going – and that’s not a euphemism! – and that’s what we attempted to do with this album. “We got Jeremy Meek, who is a Sheffield boy and has been in my band for 20 years, and Robbie McIntosh, great guitar player, he’s played on a couple of my albums. We did 12 basic tracks in three days.” Legendary saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis also added the album’s horn section and Paul also collaborated with former Squeeze bandmate Chris Difford, who wrote the lyrics for five tracks. These Days is grown-up pop music made by, and for, people who’ve had the ups and downs that life unfailingly provides. “It’s about getting to an age, and appreciating what you’ve got,” says Paul. “I hope it will resonate with people who are going through the same stuff. It’s not being frightened of it, and just trying to enjoy it.” Much of the album strikes a glass half-full, pensive mood about the long road travelled and the adventures still to come. Paul sounds as composed as he’s ever done; after five years touring with Eric Clapton, could a bit of his influence rubbed off too? “Yes, I think so,” Paul says. “It’s always hard to quantify but as a musician, subliminally, you do pick things up. Eric’s a fantastic artist with fantastic integrity and he doesn’t
AFTER 50 years in the music business playing with the likes of Squeeze, The Smiths, The Pretenders, BB King, Eric Clapton and Mike and The Mechanics, you wouldn’t think that Paul Carrack would get intimidated too easily. He’s the first to admit he usually doesn’t – “I’m Sheffield born and bred so I’m not easily intimidated!” he tells me – but a chance collaboration on his latest album, These Days, did put him on edge ever so slightly. The man in question is Steve Gadd, a renowned drummer, percussionist and session musician whose long list of collaborations includes Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan and James Taylor amongst many, many others. Steve was on a European tour with Chick Corea and was only in London for three days – so Paul seized his chance. “He’s an absolute legend. He can play anything you want to throw at him but I have to say he’s the most humble, supportive musician you could hope to find. He’s just a genuinely a lovely guy.” This album, Paul’s 17th solo album, came together a little differently to the way he usually works, largely due to the availability of Steve. “I started doing this the normal way, which is me writing the songs and doing a bit of everything,” explains Paul. “But there’s another way of doing it which is to bring in great players and

Sheffield, so they’re in a small bus and I have a car and driver,” he laughs. “Believe me, I’ve got millions of miles on the clock and in the early days, most of them were pushing bloody vans, trying to get them started. Anything that takes the sting out of it these days I’m up for.” Touring always gives Paul the opportunity to return to his roots, to Crookes, and catch up with family (his older brother John has recently retired), friends and to revisit another love. “I love going up, for my sins, to see Sheffield Wednesday,” he remarks. “I’m a season ticket holder but don’t get many games out of it. The worst part about it is, I’ve got two sons and a grandson, they’ve all been brainwashed, so it’s bad enough if you’re living in Sheffield, but down here, can you imagine the shit they’ve had at school with all the Arsenal and Tottenham fans?” After his solo tour finishes in March he’ll be heading back out on the road with Eric Clapton for dates in Japan, Germany and then a run at the Albert Hall in London. 2019 is shaping up pretty nicely.
compromise. I’m not chasing a hit or a fancy pop production, it’s a pretty honest, organic kind of record.” Reaction has been good. Reviews have been positive and his fans have been 100 per cent behind it. It’s also had over one million streams on Spotify, something Paul has found difficult to get his head round. “I can’t believe it but it’s true, because I’ve got the numbers in front of me,” he beams. But there is one thing that has got Paul’s back up. Just a little bit. “The one fly in the ointment is that Radio 2 don’t get it. That was a bit of a slap in the face,” Paul muses. “It’s a shame because Radio 2 is big numbers, a lot of people listen to it, and it lets people know you’re still around and you’re out on tour and all that stuff. “But they’re going for a younger thing now. It’s not been a natural shift, it’s like it’s come from above, they’ve decided it’s not diverse enough, it’s not young enough, it’s not this that or the other… they’re trying to get 35 year olds and upwards. I’m thinking, ‘are they f---ing joking?’.” Paul will be starting 2019 touring the album, stopping off at Sheffield’s City Hall on 14 March. At approaching 68 years old, his appetite for hitting the road remains, yet is a much different experience to his younger days. And why shouldn’t it be? “I’m based in the south, as you know, and the lads are in

THE SOUNDS OF 2019
YOU’VE GOT TO ADMIT, 2018 WAS A PRETTY GOOD YEAR FOR MUSIC. AND NOT JUST NATIONALLY, BUT LOCALLY TOO. WE LOOK AHEAD TO 2019 AND THE ACTS THAT COULD BECOME PERMANENT ADDITIONS TO YOUR PLAYLISTS – INCLUDING A COUPLE YOU MIGHT ALREADY BE FAMILIAR WITH.
Self Esteem 2019 is set to be the year that Rebecca Lucy Taylor, aka Self Esteem, drops her debut album on the world. For a long time Rebecca was dividing her attention, working on painting and prints, and video, as Self Esteem, whilst the day job was writing and performing as one half of Slow Club, but now the music and the day job is Self Esteem too, and Rebecca is revelling in it. Witty, intelligent, extrovert and piercingly insightful, Rebecca no longer has to worry about anybody else’s opinion or treading on any
toes, and can be wholly, wonderfully herself, indulging her love for choreography and the art of the pop promo. Her recent single ‘Rollout’ has had extensive support at BBC Radio 6 Music, earning a spot on their coveted AList, it’s only a matter of time before she explodes. We caught up with her for a (very) quick chat.

Sophie And The Giants Sophie and the Giants are practitioners of innovative, leftleaning pop: a raw fusion of the band’s collective influences, which range from the likes of Siouxsie Sioux and Blondie to Radiohead and Jamie T. The band was formed by Sophie (vocals and guitar), Chris Hill (drums), Bailey Stapledon (bass) and Toby Holmes (guitar) while all four of them were still at college. Shortly after graduation they moved to their adoptive hometown of Sheffield where they’ve been refining their intense, life-affirming sound. Recently they’ve been taking their music on the road, supporting Tom Grennan on the European tour, as well as select dates across the UK, and also playing with other likeminded acts. With only a handful of headline shows to their bow, but an ever increasing pile of killer singles, the band are set to take 2019 by storm. We caught up with bass-playing band member Bailey Stapledon.
You’re being tipped for big things in 2019 – no pressure then! This is really big for us. We’re planning for a big year and can’t wait to show you all what’s to come. How would you describe your sound? We make pop music, with alternative influences. What were the high points of 2018? Our tour across Europe with Tom Grennan in September was an incredible experience and we got to play our debut headline show in London this October. We’ve also got a few more shows lined up for December, including our first headline show in our adopted hometown Sheffield. Touring with Tom Grennan must have been an experience? It was amazing! Playing in Europe was a bucket list moment. The cities and the people really blew us away. What can we expect to see in 2019? We’re not sure how much we can give away just yet but definitely keep your eyes peeled. Maybe new music? Maybe a tour? All will be revealed soon... Which current artists do you admire? We’re all huge fans of Wolf Alice and Phantogram currently.
THE SOUNDS OF 2019
Why Sheffield? We’d been really lucky to get the chance to write with Jon McClure up in Sheffield whilst living in Guildford, and we fell in love with the city. Alongside all the music history here and bands we admire, we could afford to live here and spend as much time as possible practising and writing. So it’s the perfect place for us to be right now. What’s the Sheffield music scene like at the minute? We personally think the Sheffield scene is on a revival, a lot of new bands and artists are coming through the cracks and creating a really exciting new scene. Your top tips for a night out in Sheffield. Definitely the The Wick At Both Ends on West Street or Great Gatsby. Unless you’re looking for a wild one, in which case look no further than West Street Live! Are you, Chris and Toby actually giants? Well that’s the thing ... Chris and Toby are definitely average height but I’m the tallest. Maybe still not quite giant though... What can we get you for Christmas? Definitely some thick socks please! But if you happen to have a spare Ferrari lying around...

KAWALA The journey of KAWALA so far has been anything but traditional. Releasing through Mahogany Records, the band, led by Jim Higson (vocals) and Daniel McCarthy (guitar), came together whilst studying at Leeds College Of Music. It was only a few months before they agreed to dropout, head back to their beloved North London and start the band. They blend enchanting melodies with captivating rhythms to create a sound that is truly their own. 2018 was spent picking up major support from Spotify, playing the festivals, selling out three consecutive London headline shows and heading out on the road on BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders presents Hopscotch Tour. 2019 is set to be even bigger.
Grace Carter The London born, Brighton raised singer has recently supported UK heavyweights Dua Lipa, Jorja Smith, Mabel and Rag N Bone Man, and will be touring in her own right following the release of new track ‘Why Her Not Me‘. Grace grew up in Brighton listening to the likes of Lauryn Hill and Nina Simone, which is evident in her powerful songwriting, which shows emotional and musical maturity. Armed with emotionally exposing songs and a once-seen-never-forgotten live presence, she’s definitely one to catch in the smaller venues while you can.

IS it just me or does Christmas shopping get harder and harder each year? If you’re struggling for gift ideas this festive season why not keep it Sheffield? And we’re not just talking adding a bottle of Hendos to someone’s stocking. Sheffield-based artist Josephine Dellow has wowed us with her intricate ink drawings and really blew us away with her Sheffield Colouring Book, which we think is the perfect stocking filler. We spoke to the illustrator/designer/printmaker/smiler (her words, not mine!) about her work and much more. We love A Very Sheffield Colouring Book. How did that come about? Thank you! Two years ago, I made A Colouring Book of Houses and Shops – it was a natural progression for my work as I love to draw detailed pictures in black ink. I sell prints of my drawings at markets and online, many of them of Sheffield buildings, and people started to ask if there was a Sheffield version of the colouring book. So it is mainly here thanks to customers suggesting it at fairs – a reason why it’s always nice to chat at markets! The detail is phenomenal. How long does it take? A detailed illustration, like in the colouring book, can take one to two days of drawing. The process of designing the layout of the book, scanning and editing the artwork, preparing the files and finding a good printer all adds to it being a pretty enormous project! What’s the fascination with buildings? I like the character of buildings from the outside and the intrigue about what’s on the inside. I definitely seem to have a fascination with homes in general and I love to see people’s homes in children’s books and on film. From those inner lives behind the walls of houses I walk past to admiring the scale of a grand building that’s hundreds of years old, I like to capture that admiration on paper, especially when it’s a place that’s often passed by or taken for granted. What’s the most beautiful building in Sheffield? I don’t know about the most beautiful, but the Chimney House is one of my favourites. I love the character of big, industrial chimneys and red bricks. And the ugliest? Buildings are too personal to me to say which is the ugliest! It feels wrong, like I might hurt its feelings if it could hear, especially since it can’t defend itself! What are you working on now? I’ve just had a busy spell designing some new products in time for Christmas – some new Sheffield mugs, Christmas cards and a new screen print of Tower Bridge in London. I’ve only just got back to screen printing after

I am currently working on some fun client projects, including illustrations for books that will be published next spring, which I’m excited about! What’s your background? I’ve got a big family and grew up in a brightly-coloured, vibrant house where I got to be very imaginative and creative. I’m from Barnsley and I studied Art and Design at Barnsley College, then actually went to the University of Huddersfield to study Fashion Design. I realised eventually that all I really wanted to do was draw, so I transferred later to Illustration. After graduating, I started getting freelance work with greetings card companies which led to an employed position. I went back to studying part-time, to do an MA in Children’s Book Illustration at UCLAN and then carried on working in greetings cards for a few years while I started making and selling my own artwork. My shop business and freelance work grew over time, until I eventually left my job at Christmas 2017. I’ve had an amazing year working fulltime on my own thing, it makes me so happy!

The Cantastic Cookbook
Have you done any exciting collaborations? I tend to work on my own most of the time, which I don’t mind at all. I’ve been lucky that I’ve had some lovely clients, from book publishers to people who personally commission me after seeing my work at a fair. I love to get involved with the creative community in Sheffield and social media has lead to some exciting projects for interesting people I’ve met, so I’m sure there will be possibilities in the future. You do more than just prints. I design other products and gift items with my illustrations – like mugs, tote bags and books. I also draw ‘house portraits’ for people and I get commissioned to draw other buildings, like favourite pubs and wedding venues. My time is split between my shop business and client illustration work, which often includes icons, food and characters for books. You’ve done a cookbook too. Yes, The Cantastic Cookbook is a zine that I made for my shop. It features lots of recipes made from mainly tinned ingredients and the writing reflects my love for food and the some of the thought that goes into my cooking! Where can we buy your products? Customers can shop online at www.josephinedellow.etsy.com. I am also having a pop-up shop in Beeches of Walkley on 15 December.
Any exciting future plans? I hope to illustrate more books and continue to balance my client projects with running my shop. I love that I have no idea where it will all lead, but I know that every time I create a new product or post on social media, I’m putting myself out there for opportunities. New year’s resolutions? I like to aim low with new years resolutions… things like ‘use the contents of the freezer more’ and ‘send birthday cards on time’ rather than big things that I might forget about after January. But I do like to sit down and reflect on all the things that have gone well, what I want to do next and how I might improve things for my business; and around new year is a great time to do that… comfy on the sofa, with a chocolate orange by my side! MOVERS & MAKERS
Game on THE NATIONAL VIDEOGAME MUSEUM HAS OPENED ITS DOORS IN SHEFFIELD. MUSEUM DIRECTOR IAIN SIMONS TALKS TO VIBE ABOUT ALL THINGS GAMING.
IF you know your Track and Field from your Tekken, you’ll feel right at home at the National Videogame Museum (NVM). Newly-opened in the growing Castle House digital hub development, it’s a celebration of all things gaming, from Spectrum to Sega Saturn and Atari to Augmented Reality. They’re also helping to shape the games of the future through a unique scheme – Pixelheads – aimed at children. We spoke to Iain Simons, director of museum, to find out why you should make it your next port of call. Tell us about the museum. It’s opened in Sheffield! We’re just getting started and are going to be growing and changing all the time, just like videogames are. The NVM is for everybody, if you think games aren’t for you – come along and let us show you some things you might not have seen before and change your mind.

MOVERS & MAKERS
What can visitors do once they’re inside? They can play and explore the past, present and future of videogames. We’re the kind of museum where we want people to be able to touch and play with as much as possible. More than anything else though, we really like it when we can inspire people to make games of their own. A lot of the NVM is about that. Do visitors have to pay extra to play the games? No! That would be terrible! As soon as you’re inside, you can keep your cash to yourself – although do remember that we also have an awesome coffee shop AND a gift store. Why did you choose Sheffield? Sheffield is an amazing city with a really rich heritage in videogames and an equally amazing museum and festival scene. We’re really honoured to be joining in and playing our part.
What are your future plans for the museum? The museum is going to be changing and evolving all the time. Our aim is for it never to be finished. We’re organising the year into loose seasons and we’re already deep into planning 2019, so you can expect a lot more to play and explore. One thing that’s really important though, is that we really want our visitors to get involved in the life of the museum. Let us know what you’d like to see!
Tell us about Pixelheads. Pixelheads is our club for young people who love videogames. It’s about playing games, talking about games AND making them. We’re going to be launching it in Sheffield in early 2019 and people can register on the site now to find out more.
Zool or Sonic the Hedgehog? Zool, of course! Although I’m looking forward to a decent Zool/Sonic crossover title in the future. [Zool was a character created by Sheffield-based Gremlin Graphics in the nineties.]
What were your favourite games growing up? I grew up in the Commodore era, so for me it was all about Jeff Minter games and text adventures. Jeff has been making awesome, weird games with sheep and goats in them for decades. He’s brilliant.
What games should be on childrens’ Christmas lists this year? I can only really speak for myself, but I’m really looking forward to the new Zool. Also kids will enjoy Super Zool Kart. Older teenagers should try the revolutionary open world gameplay of Red Dead Zool, but only if they’re over 18, of course.
Gaming is getting bigger all the time – what does the future hold? Hopefully, a lot more surprises. I want games to have more moments where everything changes and all our expectations are undone. Hopefully by someone we’ve never heard of before. Hopefully a teenage girl from Sheffield. Or her gran.

Take a chance A brand new Sheffield-based t-shirt company is leaving its designs all up to chance, by using random number generators, dice rolls or coin flips to create unique designs. Inspired by the generative art of Ellsworth Kelly and John Cage, Sheffield designer, and founder of Design By Chance, Steve Levers uses the chance operations to fill a set grid on the front of his shirts with the selected tiles, curating the best designs for sale on his website. Steve explains: “On the chevrons t shirt there are eight basic tiles, with the chevrons going different ways and in different colours. They are in a grid of 12, so I basically pick 12 different numbers between one and eight and that decides which tile I place in the grid. “With the chevrons there is 68,719,476,736 possible permutations of 8 basic tiles so every time I do a design it’s completely different. The amount of permutations are just crazy on a grid of 12. It’s massive numbers. Basically enough for one for everyone on the planet!” The £19 t-shirts are currently printed in the UK through Teemill, but he would eventually like to screen print them himself so they are more ‘made in Sheffield’ and to open up the possibilities of giving people the chance to create their own randomly generated designs. See https://designbychance.teemill.com/ for more.

Bigger Abbeydale Brewery
New city centre location
Sheffield favourites Abbeydale Brewery have announced huge expansion and investment into the business in order to meet the ever growing demand for their range of craft beers. The brewers have acquired an additional 7,426 square feet of space in units adjoining their existing site boosting capacity by around 20 per cent, which follows on from extensive recent investment into new equipment, with over £200k being injected into four new vessels, a malt milling system and laboratory equipment. As well as increasing brewing capacity, the new space will also lead to the improvement of warehousing capabilities and new office facilities for the team. There is also the potential to create Abbeydale’s first dedicated on-site events space which is sure to add to the area’s thriving beer scene.
Naked Ape has been bringing high-quality outdoor products to the heart of Sheffield since 2005, when owner Wayne Biney saw a demand for premium, ethical, high quality outdoor clothing and equipment in Sheffield, due to its close proximity to the Peak District. The Pinstone Street shop pride themselves on stocking grass roots brands that use recycled and organic materials, and are official UK stocklists for brands such as Patagonia, Carhartt Workwear, Danner boots, Vibram Fivefingers, Teva Sandals, Keen Footwear, North Sea Clothing, Mephisto shoes and more. The name Naked Ape was inspired ‘by a book of the same name, written by zoologist Desmond Morris in the 1960s’ says Wayne. Morris coined the term to refer to humans, who have lost most of their body hair and now as a result have to use clothing to protect themselves from the outdoor elements.
New vegan bakery
Debut show for new gallery
Baked By Pearl Bakery will cater for all your cakebased vegan and glutenfree needs on Hickmott Road. The new cake shop, where all the goodies are vegan and gluten-free, opened on 8 December. It stocks all manner of cakes, cookies, and even mince pies over the festive period, as well as good coffee, hot chocolates and cakeshakes, which we’re told is when you blend up a slice of your favourite cake with Blue Skies dairy free ice cream, and lather it up with toppings. As well as the cakes, they eventually plan to do take-away sandwiches, as Baked by Pearl’s owner Sarah Shooter, who has is allergic to wheat and has had to cut both wheat and dairy from her diet tells us, “I can never grab anything when I’m out. “You get vegan cake, or you get gluten-free cake, very rarely do you come across the two together and that’s really frustrating.”

Brewing up a storm An American husband and wife team have set up a new Sheffield-based brewery and tap room. Dann and Martha, a husband and wife team from Boston, USA have been brewing for ten years in the States, and ran a brewing company called Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project. They have now relocated to Sheffield to open a brand new brewery and tap room in Attercliffe called Saint Mars of the Desert. Martha said on the brewery’s website: “It has been a dream of Dann’s for over 25 years to own his own brewery, and we looked long and hard for a great location to do it, and fell head over heels in love with Sheffield. So that’s why we’re here. “We have built a great little brewery, supplied and installed by Sheffield-based Moeschle UK, with a small bottling line. We also have an in-house screen printing shop where Martha is printing all the labels for our beers. We’ll talk more about the brewhouse and equipment in an upcoming post.” The beers won’t be labelled in the traditional manner either, as they attempt to break away from traditional beer style names like helles, pils or bitter, in favour of their own unique naming system.

Light fantastic IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT TURKEY... BROCCO ON THE PARK’S LEWIS PLATT COOKS CHRISTMAS DINNER WITH A TWIST. BY RHIANA HUGHES.
CHRISTMAS is considered one of the most special times of the year for a lot of us. A time to catch up with loved ones you might not have seen in a while, relax on the sofa with a drink in hand and fall in and out of sleep while a re-run you’ve probably seen a hundred times plays on the telly. While there’s a lot to love about Christmas, it can be a stressful time too, especially for whoever’s drawn the short straw as chef. If it’s up to you to feed what can feel like an army, you’re probably already thinking of ways to cut down the time you’ll spend in the kitchen, but one thing you likely haven’t considered is that there’s more than one option on Christmas Day than a big turkey dinner. It may well be blasphemy to some as we’ve been eating turkey on Christmas Day since the 16th century, but times are changing and family-time is as important
as ever, so why spend the day in the kitchen when you could spend it with those closest to you instead? If you really can’t imagine sitting down to anything other than a hearty roast after two or three glasses of bucks fizz, why not cook up something simple yet special on the night before Christmas instead? We paid a visit to Brocco on the Park where Lewis Platt gave us his take on what would make a great alternative Christmas meal. “You want something light, you don’t want something heavy or too hard to make,” said Lewis, when asked why this would make the perfect alternative Christmas menu. Lewis shared with us a three-course meal that’s bound to make any mouth water and will surely go down a treat whether you’re hosting a family feast or one just for the grown-ups. It might seem like three courses is a lot
40
to take on, but these three recipes are quick and easy to follow, and none of them call for long lists of hard to find ingredients. Everything you’ll need to put together this impressive meal can be found at your local supermarket, and if you think you’ll be pushed for time during the busiest days of the festive period, a lot of this menu can be prepped beforehand (Lewis even tells us that the fondant is even better if left chilled for a day or two). So if you can’t face another Christmas trying to remember who does and doesn’t like sprouts and whether or not goose fat really will make for the perfect roast potato, set aside a couple of hours to prepare something different, and spend the rest of your time enjoying the company of those around you. Lewis’s recipes are designed to serve four, but can easily be amended if you’re cooking for a larger group.

Celeriac, apple and hazelnut soup STARTER
A fresh way to start off the meal, this soup is easy to make and uses only five ingredients, so won’t break the bank. Serve with some fresh (homemade if you’re a keen baker) bread and a glass of Chablis – Brocco recommend the Vincent Tremblay Chablis as its nutty taste perfectly complements the flavours of the soup. Ingredients 1 onion 3 garlic cloves 2 celeriac 3 granny smith apples 1 litre vegetable stock
41
To serve 50g peeled and toasted hazelnuts 1 granny smith apple, thinly sliced Pea shoots Method 1. Finely chop the onion. 2. Crush the garlic cloves. 3. Sweat the onion and garlic slowly in a heavy-based saucepan until soft and tender. 4. Peel the celeriac and dice into 1cm cubes, then add to the onion and garlic and cover with vegetable stock, bring to the boil. 5. Dice the apple and add to the pan, then simmer until the celeriac is tender. 6. Blitz the soup until smooth. 7. To serve, sprinkle with toasted hazelnuts and garnish with the sliced apple and a few pea shoots.

MAIN COURSE
Pan fried seabass with chestnut and smoked bacon fricassee, artichoke purée and cavolo nero This dish is sure to impress your guests as its delicate presentation gives the illusion you’ve been slaving away for hours when in actual fact, all three courses only take about an hour and a half to make in total. Great on its own but even better when paired with a light red wine. Brocco suggest a Cotes du Rhone such as the Reserve de l’Abbe to really bring out the flavours of the dish. Ingredients 4 seabass fillets 50g butter For chestnut and smoked bacon fricassee 100g chestnuts 4 rashers bacon 2 shallots 100g cavolo nero
1 lemon Pinch of sugar For artichoke purée 500g Jerusalem artichokes 500ml milk To serve Artichoke crisps Pea shoots Method 1. Peel the artichokes and dice into 1cm cubes, then place into a saucepan, cover with milk and bring to the boil. Cook until soft, and then blitz and set aside until needed. 2. Place the chestnuts into an ovenproof tray and roast for 30 minutes at 200°C, then peel once roasted. 3. Finely dice the shallots and sauté in a frying pan. 4. Cut the bacon into strips and add to
42
the frying pan with the shallots and cook until crispy. 5. Cut the chestnuts into quarters and add to the pan. 6. Remove the stalks from the cavolo nero, then add to the pan with the rest of the fricassee mixture, adding the sugar and lemon zest, then sauté until soft. 7. While the fricassee is cooking, start to fry the seabass over a medium heat, skin side down until the skin is crispy. 8. When the skin is crispy (the fish will be 95 per cent cooked) turn over and cook for another minute. 9. To make the artichoke crisps, thinly slice on a mandolin then fry in a deep fat fryer at 150°C until pale brown and crispy. 10. To serve, place the purée around the plate, add the fricassee to the middle of the plate and place the fish on top, adding the artichoke crisps and pea shoots.

Chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream DESSERT
We’ve all ordered a rich chocolate fondant as an after dinner treat at one point or another and wondered how on earth the chefs managed to get that perfect molten centre. Turns out, it’s not as tricky as we thought if you follow Lewis’s simple steps. Ingredients 200g sugar 4 whole eggs 4 egg yolks 200g butter 200g self-raising flour 200g dark chocolate For the mould 50g soft butter 100g cocoa
43
To serve Vanilla ice cream Fresh raspberries Method 1. Line your Dariole moulds by brushing the insides with butter, then coating with cocoa powder. Freeze and repeat. 2. Whisk the whole eggs, egg yolks and sugar until the mixture doubles in size and is pale in colour. 3. Place the butter and chocolate into a heatproof bowl and melt over a bain-marie. 4. Once melted, pour the chocolate mixture over the egg mixture and mix until combined, then fold in the self-raising flour. 5. Pour the mixture into the moulds threequarters of the way and bake for 8 minutes at 180°C. 6. Serve with vanilla ice cream and fresh raspberries.

Meet The Dead Donkey OWNERS OF ABBEYDALE ROAD’S NEWEST BAR REVEAL THE STORY BEHIND ITS NAME, HOW THEY PLAN TO START A HOSPITALITY REVOLUTION (SORT OF) AND WHY THEY’RE SELLING GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICHES AND NOT CHEESE TOASTIES! Ed said: “If you’ve ever been to a fancy bar or restaurant and they send the sommelier over with your wine list, they just know so much about it. We know that much about basically any type of alcohol, and so will anyone who works for us. We want that kind of service. “The only thing we both agreed that we hate about that kind of place is that it’s so stuffy. If you just want to enjoy really nice wine, or even beer we want to offer that to people but in somewhere where they can sit down comfortable where none of the bar staff have waxed moustaches, and those weird little suspenders that hold your shirt-sleeves up! None of that, it’s horrible. So, we had to ask, why grilled cheese sandwiches, and what separates them from cheese toasties? “We’re not using a Breville, so it’s not a toastie!” says Doug. Doug added: “Very early on we identified that you have to have some kind of food offering. Grilled cheese came about because we didn’t know anywhere else that does them. We heard about Gravel Pit a few months after, but we thought, you know what Sheffield never really had a good grilled cheese sandwich, and now they’re gonna have two in the same place!” Doug added: “We’re turning the lentil belt into the cheese triangle. We just need a third place that’s geographically triangular!” Just a few months away from opening, Doug tells us: “We’re very, very excited and pretty nervous. We live in Nether Edge and pretty much our entire existence has been in Nether Edge, so the more bars the merrier.” We couldn’t agree more.
A NEW bar selling grilled cheese sandwiches is taking over the unit previously occupied by Mr Pickles Food Emporium on Abbeydale Road. As well as the grilled cheese, Dead Donkey will specialise in craft ales, wine and spirits and will be the first venture from brothers Ed and Doug Daly, who have worked in Sheffield’s hospitality industry for a number of years. Both working in the trade, they are passionate about what they do but are very aware of the pitfalls, which has given them a very clear vision of what they want from their bar. Older brother Ed explains: “We’ve experienced it first hand, and the majority of our friends work in the same industry. We’re aware of the anti-social hours, crap rates of pay, and associated mental health problems that come along with that.” In order to combat this problem, the brothers are promising to operate ethically by paying the actual living wage, using local suppliers, giving real opportunity for career progression to their staff, as well as set hours that they are told well in advance. Doug said: “Hopefully, if we treat people like that, and they do move on to open their own place, then maybe they’ll treat people like that, and before you know it we’ve started a revolution!” “Dead Donkey is an animal farm reference,” says Ed: “not that we’re opening a communist bar, but the concept that we’ve had for the last few years is to do exactly what everyone else does, just better. “Donkeys live for a long time, none have you ever seen a dead donkey, and nobody’s ever seen a bar that pays the living wage and gives you two set days off a week!” They also plan to share the knowledge they’ve gained with their employees, giving the customer a better experience.
The Dead Donkey plans to be open in February.

The Grind Café Kelham Island’s The Grind Café has announced extended opening hours – it will now carry on serving wine, beers and gin until 10pm.
Lisboa Earlier in the year, VIBE revealed that Lisboa Patisserie, an authentic Portuguese café specialising in Pastéis de Nata, was set to open on St. Paul’s Parade. It’s been a while coming, but the café is finally open, so we had a chat with one of the café’s co-owners to find out what they’ve been up to, and what we can expect. Dan Martins told VIBE: “It’s taken us a while as everything was coming from Portugal, from the food, the floor tiles, even one of our chefs! “The chef is 50-odd years-old and has been doing it forever, and he’s moved just for this project. They’re seriously the best pastries I’ve ever had, and I’m not just saying that because they’re ours! “The coffee is Portuguese, we have a range of Portuguese teas even the water is Portuguese! “We’ve even gone to the details of working with the oldest manufacturers of catering equipment in Portugal. It’s the first time they’ve worked with anyone from the UK. We want to create something special and different.” Dan and his business partner are both originally from Portugal, but Dan has been living in England for ten years. He is hoping that Sheffield residents will take to their traditional, but with a modern twist, Portuguese interior, as well as the pastries. “It was amazing to see the reaction we got,” says Dan: “It’s like anything, when you make a plan you’re not sure how it’s going to go, but it’s been really good and really positive. “We’re both Portuguese and we have a passion for this. To be able to experience that same taste outside of Portugal is hard and we’re trying to make it as close as possible.”
Khristmas Island Can you lot keep a secret?... You sure? Well, there’s a new festive bar open in Kelham Island’s Wharncliffe Works, on Cornish Street, but keep it under your (Santa) hat! Khristmas Island popped-up serving mulled wine, craft ales and gin to Kelham’s festive revellers delight. The bar, by brothers Nick and Matt Burgess, who used to manage the Champs bars in Malin Bridge and Ecclesall Road, is hoping to get the area in the Christmas mood. Matt told VIBE: “Me and Nick have been running Champs for the last five years, but we’ve been planning to do our own thing for a couple of years now. We had the opportunity to open a pop-up and it went very well over the first weekend, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. “We want to make sure people are getting in the Christmas spirit, with Christmas songs and good drinks. It’s a great place to start or end your evening, as it’s just up from the tram stop.” The pop-up is open from now until Christmas Eve, with opening hours are from 5-11pm every Thursday to Sunday, except for Christmas Eve, when it opens at 12pm and closes for the final time at 9pm. Festive tipples, such as local favourite Farmer’s Belgian Blue from Bardfield Brewery will be on tap, as well as mulled wines, gin and tonics from £4, and bottles of prosecco for £16.
K-Pasa Many Sheffielders will remember K-Pasa from its Glossop Road heyday back in the noughties and early 2010’s, when the restaurant was famed for its MexicanItalian fusion food, including fajitas, burritos and chimichangas. Sadly, following a change of ownership and an expensive makeover, the restaurant was forced to close its doors with the unit in 290 Glossop Road becoming a Chinese restaurant a few-years-ago. K-Pasa faded into people’s memories and nothing was heard of the restaurant for years – until now that is! K-Pasa recently broke their silence, taking to Twitter to announce: “BREAKING NEWS! K Pasa Restaurant returning to Sheffield Jan 2019”, with a mocked up newspaper front page showing an old image of the restaurant on Glossop Road. So it’s back, with the only unanswered question being the whereabouts of the new restaurant? Watch this space.

Hillsborough Park
Dunkin’ Donuts
The planned redevelopment of a derelict listed building in Hillsborough Park moved one step closer today, after it was announced the project has received initial National Lottery support of £50,000. It means the abandoned coach house, last used as a munitions store during the Second World War, could be open for use by the whole community by the end of 2020. Age UK Sheffield says the development funding of £49,700 will enable the charity to progress plans and apply for a full National Lottery Grant later this year. A fundraising campaign is already under way. The centre, behind Hillsborough Library and adjoining the Park’s attractive walled garden, would host dementia-friendly group activities such as singing and dancing, as well as classroom-based activities and educational classes such as digital drop-ins. The community café could be open to thousands of local park visitors, including dog-walkers, children’s playground users, and park runners.
Dunkin’ Donuts is opening a brand new store at Sheffield’s Fox Valley on 19 December, making it the brand’s first store in Sheffield. The store will open in Fox Valley’s Food Quarter next to recent newcomers Zorro Lounge and Ponti’s Italian Kitchen. The Dunkin Donuts team are currently transforming the new unit ready for guests to enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts’ food and beverages, including the famous Boston Crème, Mr Happy, Chocolate Caramel Duo and Crème Brulee donuts, with a wide range of coffees and other beverages. Laura Manley, QFM Group Marketing Manager, said: “We are delighted to be opening our latest Dunkin Donuts at Fox Valley, this is a great location for us and a fantastic position at the centre. We are looking forward to opening the new store next week and welcoming new customers and Dunkin’ fans into our lovely new store.” Medi Parry-Williams from the Fox Valley Management team said: “Dunkin’ Donuts is a great addition to our food and drink offer here at Fox Valley and we wish the team all the best with the new store which we are confident is going to be really popular with our shoppers.” Around 15 new jobs are being created at the new Fox Valley store which will open at 9am on Wednesday 19th December with a special ribbon cutting, plus an exclusive opening offer free donut with every regular Dunkin’ Drink purchased until 16 January 2019.
Heartcure Collective After two years of planning and fundraising, Heartcure Collective’s founders have announced the ‘UK’s first vegan social centre’ is offically open . The new social centre, inside a former city-centre warehouse in 38 Garden Street, will house Vibes Food Co – a vegan subway-style cafe, a whole foods and coffee shop, a zero waste shop Zero Hero, an ethical clothing store Wild Ones, as well as a library, kids area and much more. Founder Jordan Heart told VIBE: “The centre will focus on animal rights, sustainability and the environment helping to create positive change. Through hosting workshops, talks, film screenings and events the centre hopes to empower people to create change in the world. “It will be the UK’s first animal rights social centre. There are others selling vegan food but our main focus is animal rights, plus living sustainably and just being conscious of our life choices. There’s going to be a café, library, work station rooms to rent and a stage for talks, so we’re jam packing it full of cool stuff.” Zero Hero will offer a mixture of essential package free foods, toiletries and more to help the community live more sustainably. Fitting tribute IN HONOUR OF THE LATE TRAMLINES FESTIVAL DIRECTOR, SARAH NULTY, A NEW AWARD CATEGORY HAS BEEN LAUNCHED BY THE UK FESTIVAL AWARDS TO CELEBRATE THE WORK AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF WOMEN WORKING IN THE FESTIVAL INDUSTRY. industry roles and I believe that this award will help cement the idea to young women that they can succeed in the festival industry – Sarah being a role model for these women is fantastic. “It means so much to us that Sarah has been recognised again for her contribution to festivals. We’re proud of what we have achieved as a team under her leadership. The announcement of the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award is just incredible; it’ll keep her legacy alive for years to come.” Sarah came to Sheffield as a student in 1999 and following various roles in the local music industry including managing venues and running events, she was appointed Festival Director of Tramlines in 2013 having been instrumental in the launch of the festival in 2009. Tramlines Festival was an immediate success, bringing hundreds of thousands of people to Sheffield in its first year. Through Sarah’s stewardship, the festival overcame fundamental changes in the way it was funded and delivered, and the hugely successful 10th edition was testament to her tremendous work ethic and passion for Sheffield music. This latest award can be added to an impressive array of awards and honours bestowed on Sarah. On 6 November she was given an Outstanding Contribution Award from the Association of Independent Festivals, and she also received a Civic Award from Magid Magid, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Sheffield City Council have created a permanent memorial for Sarah in the form of a commemorative plaque at Devonshire Green in Sheffield City Centre, the original home of the main stage for Tramlines Festival.
THE UK Festival Awards, in addition to celebrating Sarah Nulty with a post-humous ‘Outstanding Contributions to Festivals’ award, have also created a new category, the ‘Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals’ award, due to launch in 2019. The award celebrating the talents and achievements of women working in the festival industry was unveiled at the 15th annual UK Festival Awards held at the Troxy in East London. The new category has been established in memory of Sarah, who passed away at the age of 36 just weeks before the festival’s 10th anniversary. The Sarah Nulty Women In Festivals Award will recognise the work and achievements of the many outstanding women working in the male-dominated festival industry. Its aim is to also inspire other females wishing to pursue a career in the music and events industry, something Sarah Nulty championed during her time not only at Tramlines, but throughout her career overall. Michael Baker, Awards Manger of the Festival Awards said: “In addition to acknowledging Sarah’s myriad achievements with the presentation of our Outstanding Contribution to Festivals Award, we are also delighted to announce that in 2019 we will launch the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award. The accolade is inspired by Sarah’s incredible legacy, aiming to champion the amazing work done by women across all facets of the festival industry.” Tramlines Operations Director, Timm Cleasby, commented, “Sarah was a real advocate for getting young women into the industry. We were planning to find ways that we could help encourage more young women into music

Sing a song of Christmas
We said ‘bye to a host of famous names over the last 12 months. Can you recognise these dearly departed souls from 2018?
Most of us will find ourselves singing carols at some stage over the festive period, but can you use the clues below to identify these festive favourites.
1. This pioneer of the nightclub scene in Sheffield and Leeds created local venues where stars like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Wonder performed. He later moved to London where he became synonymous with lap-dancing and leopard skin. 2. This tough guy actor’s best role came in a harrowing film about four friends who meet up for a weekend canoeing trip in the wilds of Georgia... the locals are not impressed. He also posed naked for Cosmopolitan. 3. This singer, songwriter, civil rights activist, actress, and pianist was the daughter of a Baptist minister and first found success as a gospel singer before becoming a soul superstar. She sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King and the inauguration of Barack Obama. 4. This British TV presenter and radio DJ found fame on a game show where contestants ran around a supermarket filling their trolleys. 5. This spectacularly bright scientist had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease that gradually paralysed him over the decades, but even after the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speechgenerating device, initially through use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.
11. Which famous Christmas song sends tidings of comfort and joy? 12. When did Good King Wenceslas last look out? 13. What type of pudding do the carollers sing about in We Wish You a Merry Christmas? 14. Which famous Christmas carol ends with the words: ‘Hosanna in excelsis!’ 15. What type of tree is mentioned in The Twelve Days of Christmas? ***
Quote...Unquote Who made the news in 2018 with the following snappy soundbites? 16. “I’m not sure I’ll ever wear a waistcoat again.” 17. “Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a nuclear button, but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his, and my button works!” 18. “A decade after the financial crash, people need to know that the austerity it led to is over and that their hard work has paid off.” 19. “There was something about putting this hat on that made me feel like Superman.” 20. “Some of us are mountain climbers but if you get to the top of your favourite mountain and you stay there, you become an observer. MOTORING
THESE NEW CARS MAKE A BIG IMPRESSION, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Close to perfection Feast your eyes on this Christmas treat – say hello to the newly face-lifted Audi R8. Things just got a whole lot more serious. The current generation Audi R8 was near perfect, but somehow the Audi engineers have made the new R8 even better. The base model will come with increased performance, 562hp to be precise. The top of the range V10 Performance model will have an increased power hike up to 612hp. The 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 is the same as before but uprated power and torque figures make this the fastest R8 to date. The suspension has been fiddled with too to make the driving experience even more of an event. Audi has nailed the aesthetics. Purposeful yet classy. UK ordering expected early 2019.
Small but practical Say hello to the newest, and smallest SUV VW currently produce – the T-Cross. Being slightly smaller than the T-Roc, the T-Cross is targeting an audience for the likes to carry five people in comfort, be extremely practical yet extremely compact while still living the SUV lifestyle. The new T-Cross has a choice of four turbocharged engines: three petrol and one diesel. A 94hp and 113hp 1.0-litre threecylinder petrol unit, a 148hp 1.5-litre four-pot petrol, and a 94hp 1.6-litre four-cylinder TDI. Already included as standard equipment are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System, the lane keeping assistant Lane Assist, Hill Start Assist, the proactive occupant protection system, and the Blind Spot Detection lane system.
Magnificent X7 Are you finding that looking for a big, luxurious, commanding SUV is too difficult? Well BMW thinks it has the answer with this, the all-new X7. Being the top of the range X-Series variant, X7 has high expectations to fulfil, but in true BMW fashion, it won’t let you down. From the outside the X7 is a purposeful looking machine, but purposeful in terms of practicality too, because the X7 has three rows of seats with the rear most containing two full-size seats. Something which is such a luxury for the larger families amongst us. Three engines will be available from launch, a six-cylinder petrol and two six-cylinder diesels. The X7 will be on sale from April 2019 with a starting price of £72,115.

As always, the Wrangler will be fourwheel drive and the transmission is an eight-speed automatic, making life that much easier for us folk.
