Kieron Eyre and Megan McIntosh

Transform your home IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A NEW KITCHEN OR BEDROOM THIS NEW YEAR, BE SURE TO VISIT CONCEPT INTERIORS’ STATE-OF-THE-ART SHOWROOM. ith a new year upon us, now is the perfect time to start looking at ways to improve our homes. Often said to be the heart of the home, the kitchen is a very good place to start. Concept Interiors on Bamforth Street is the retail arm of a long-established holding company, which has been trading for over 30 years and has the expert knowledge and experience to help transform your home. Concept Interiors is a local, family-run business, headed by directors and cousins Megan McIntosh and Kieron Eyre. Their reputation has continued to grow, thanks in no small part to excellent craftsmanship and customer service, and their recently extended showroom already has a wide range of luxury, affordable kitchens, worktops and appliances on display. Thanks to long-established alliances with leading supplier brands such as Miele, Neff and Siemens, their showroom displays many of their products along with high quality worktops including Granite, Sensa by Cosentino, Dekton, Silestone and Corian. They also offer a highly-rated German-engineered range of kitchen furniture, designed and created to the clients’ exact specification. As well as kitchens, the business also specialises in bespoke, handmade bedrooms, offices and media rooms whilst also offering a

W

highly-rated interior design service. Their work consists of private retail customers across South Yorkshire, as well as some of Sheffield’s most prestigious property developers, offering high-quality bespoke products at competitive prices – all showcasing British and German craftsmanship at its finest without any compromise on quality. “Hassle free home improvement is what we are about,” says Kieron, who is also the showroom’s design and sales director. “We’ll work tirelessly to meet your budget, and as we offer bespoke furnishing, can design practical solutions to fit the most challenging spaces.” Once a client has had the initial meeting with the design team, they will return to the showroom to draw up a CAD illustration, ground plan and elevation. Sitting alongside the designer, they are able to tweak the design to achieve their ideal layout. Highly skilled craftsmen will then begin manufacturing the new interior at the onsite, state-of-the-art facility, all within a timescale that suits you. The installation is overseen by Kieron and the lead fitter, Ian Gilliland, and involves all painting, plumbing, electrical and gas work needed to get your new living space up and running. So if you are looking for a new kitchen or

bedroom this new year, be sure to visit Concept Interiors’ state-of-theart showroom or give the team a call today. Concept Interiors Ltd 117 Bamforth Street, Sheffield, S6 2HE Tel: 0114 285 2762 Email: info@conceptinteriors.org.uk www.conceptinteriors.org.uk

SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service, fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors and conservatories

Sheffield Window Centre has a soft spot for abandoned pets, raising money for Rain Rescue

Leading from the front AFTER 42 YEARS IN BUSINESS, FAMILY-RUN SHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE CONTINUES TO MOVE WITH THE TIMES. t was back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody topped the charts, that Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) was founded. Fast-forward 42 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of SWC in the early eighties, is managing director... and with his four children involved, this is a true family business. As the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the most reliable name they look for. SWC was the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which? and they have been named the UK’s “Installer of the Year” at the G Awards – the most prestigious awards in the UK window industry. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975. SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in key personnel to meet the ever-increasing demand for high quality products, new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. And the Rockingham Street showroom has recently undergone substantial renovations – introducing an exciting new product display. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘no pressure policy’. Whether it be price, product or service, they can’t be beaten, and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester.

I

24 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour. Frames are available in a range of colours including wood grain effects. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain heat. It’s not just about staying cosy, though – perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know it’s secure. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. Don’t be misled by the name – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service, fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors and conservatories, suitable for year round use. Offering a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process.

And that’s not all – SWC is also applying its expertise to making a difference in the local community. Supporting a number of worthy causes, including Rain Rescue, a Rotherham-based rescue centre helping pets in true crisis. Sheffield Window Centre has a soft spot for abandoned pets – several staff and family members have adopted dogs from Rain Rescue – and as a company they have donated windows and doors to keep the charity’s animals warm and secure. They also donated a conservatory from the showroom, which was auctioned and raised £1,700. GIVE YOUR SKIN THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES THIS WINTER, LEAVING YOURSELF GLOWING AND REJUVENTATED. he cold weather is finally here and with this seasonal change also comes a change in our skin and complexion. During the harsh and blustery months our skin can lose tone and vitality, often becoming dry, dull and sallow. Fine lines and wrinkles also can become more apparent and extra care and attention is needed. With that in mind, skin specialist Rebecca Elsdon of White Advanced Beauty Clinic, offers a range of treatments to help leave your skin glowing and rejuvenated and you feeling your personal best. Step into the beautiful clinic where

Rebecca, after a thorough consultation, will customise a skin solution as individual as you are. Here is a quick insight into some of the treatments you can expect to receive at the clinic: AlumierMD is a range of skin peels, treatments and homecare – using innovative ingredients at optimum levels proved by clinical studies – that encourage optimal skin health. The light to medium depth peels work by deeply exfoliating the surface layers, revealing fresher, clearer more youthful looking skin. Targeting and treating skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, sun damage and signs of ageing, the active ingredients brighten and rejuvenate. Another popular treatment is Dermatude Meta Therapy. The next generation of digital skin needling provides quick, safe results for any skin type and at any age. By stimulating the skins natural healing mechanism and producing collagen and elastin, the ageing process can be slowed down considerably, and other skin imperfections can be improved. For optimal results and to lengthen the

WINTER SKIN CARE PACKAGE

£150 (normal price £200) Combat dry, tight, dull, skin that is crying out for hydration. Start with an AlumierMD radiant peel for clinical exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and boost cell turnover, followed by a Hydra Boost Dermatude, a needling treatment using active ingredients to work deep into the live cells of your skin, providing a boost of hydration to the lower layers of the skin. Finish the course with a second AlumierMD radiant peel, also including the moisture mask.

Rebecca Elsdon “My aim for the clinic was to give clients an exclusive experience in a discreet location. “After being in the beauty industry for 15 years, I have seen fads come and go. I did extensive research into results driven skincare and treatments to offer the best possible results, and I’m currently working towards my level four Diploma in advanced skin studies and aesthetic practice. “The ranges I have introduced to the clinic have a more progressive, rather than aggressive approach, resulting in less down time, which can be an important factor for busy lives. “It’s very important to visit an experienced professional who will design a programme and prescribe the appropriate products for you. Working on a one-to-one basis, I welcome clients to come along for a free 30-minute consultation, so you can be assured you will get the very best results.”

EATING OUT

Long and winding road DON’T LET THE DRIVE PUT YOU OFF, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. IT’S MORE THAN WORTH THE EFFORT. “

here is it?” I’m thinking, as the sat nav tells me to signal right and the road winds high into the village of Ashbourne. My companion asks whether I have made a mistake. I had no idea. “Just trust the GPS,” I said. On and up we go, along the winding roads of the Derbyshire Peaks and Staffordshire. And as we edge further away from the brighter lights of the Dovedale Valley, I’m hoping this isn’t going to end with an ‘I told you so’ look. But just I begin to think we’d been miscast in the remake of Wuthering Heights, The Izaak Walton hefts into view. And as we pull up outside the majestic 17th century country house hotel, named after the famous author of “The Complete Angler”, we were full of anticipation for the evening ahead. We were warmly greeted by the receptionist, who took us to the 2 AA Rosette awarded Haddon Restaurant. Being the first to be seated was not a problem, as the waiters were welcoming and showed us to a lovely table draped in white linen and laden with heavy silver cutlery, an elegant candelabra and delicate wine glasses. Soon, the restaurant began to fill up, enhancing the pleasant atmosphere, and as we perused the starters our waiter was quick to bring out selection of warm, homemade breads and butter, which were moreishly good. The pre-starter canapes were impossible to turn down; the goats’ cheese so light and rich

it seemed to smoulder in the mouth for an eternity and the hint of earthiness from the mushroom at the finish was divine. The accompanying bon bon left us in a frenzy at the thought of what might be appearing next. And quite rightly too, as my starter of panfried quail breast and leg lollipop appeared: complemented by a glass of Finca Flichman reserve Malbec (£6.50) followed by a vibrant and fresh assiette of beetroot, blue cheese, walnut pesto, basil and peashoots for my companion. The latter paired perfectly with a fresh on the palate glass of Greyrock Marlborough sauvignon blanc (£6.50). The quail breast was served with fried quails egg, king oyster mushroom, pancetta and jus and proved to be deliciously delicate. The leg lollipop was tender and succulent, and set the bar high for meaty mains to come. My venison was generous to say the least, cooked beautifully and presented with flair. Dressed with black pudding and venison bon bon, duo of carrot, fondant potato and seasoned with redcurrant jus, it had a deep flavour and a softness which melted in the mouth. My companion’s sage, mushroom and butternut pasta was perfectly complemented by crispy mozzarella and tempura sage. And the creamy, flawlessly smooth béchamel gave an earthy dimension, whilst shaved parmesan added textural contrast. We were more than pleased with our

puddings: my soufflé was perfectly formed with vanilla ice cream and zingy blackberries. My companion’s theatrical dish of dark chocolate parfait and passionfruit textures was a tangy, sweet confection, a final burst of fireworks in a meal which came humming and fizzing with invention – an amazing way to almost end the meal. I say “almost end” because we rounded off dessert with coffee, accompanied by beautiful homemade mint and citrus chocolates. Our midweek visit was the ideal antidote to a murky autumn’s eve – but go for supper in winter when the fires are roaring and I’d imagine it would be even more magical. Two courses £30 per person / Three courses £37.50 per person (includes tea/coffee) The Izaak Walton Hotel Dovedale, Ashbourne Staffordshire, DE6 2AY Tel: 01335 350981 www.izaakwaltonhotel.com

EATING OUT

Ringing the changes A NEW MENU LAUNCH WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR CHRIS WILSON TO REVISIT ONE OF THE CITY’S LEADING RESTAURANTS. t turns out I chose a good week to renew my acquaintance with Peppercorn as they’d just launched their winter menu, and while at first sight everything looked comfortingly familiar, it became clear that bold changes were afoot. The décor was still that winning mix of cosy and contemporary, the warm welcome and cheerful service was as I remembered from previous visits. So what was new? For a start, a dish that I’d considered to be head chef Charlie Curran’s signature main course was no longer on the menu. I don’t know how many portions of tandoori cod fillet with spinach curry he’d cooked over the years – I’ve had it myself on more than one occasion – but now is obviously regarded as the time to ring the changes. But if you are mourning the passing one of the great a la carte mains of recent vintage, dry those tears, because the new menu is packed with strong flavours, intriguing combinations and the all-round excellence that has stood Peppercorn in good stead for many years. To help me digest the changes the venue’s signature cocktail, the Pink Peppercorn (£8), a winning blend of tequila, maple syrup, fresh grapefruit juice and lime was the best option, if you share my taste for aperitifs on the spicy and tangy side. As well as the new a la carte menu there

I

58 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

was also a budget early bird 6-12-6 option available (£6 starters, £12 mains, £6 desserts) which is great value for food, service and setting of this quality. But we were set on giving the new menu a thorough workout, starting with some fantastic white and brown bread rolls with plain or Henderson’s relishinfused butter (sweet, sour and strangely addictive). For starters my pressed ox tongue terrine (£8) was moist, meaty and rather magnificent. Served with a suitably tangy raisin chutney and mustard, it was the perfect tastebud sharpener. By contrast cauliflower soup was, smooth, rich and luscious. My main course of venison (£19) was a gorgeous deep red colour, the thick slices of pan-fried loin were tender and packed with flavour. Accompanied by venison-stuffed tortellini, savoy cabbage and port sauce, each element gelled to make a top-notch main course dish. A large glass of Conviviale Montepulciano (£6) was the perfect companion. Speaking of which, across the table the luxurious sole and crab (£19) earned high praise. With immaculately cooked pure white fish rolled with crab at the centre, it was served alongside a saffron and potato mousseline and a rich bisque sauce. Side orders at £3.95 of immaculate dauphinoise potato and green beans with goats’

cheese and chilli sauce (who could resist such a fun combination?) completed the savoury story and set us up perfectly for desserts. Iced peanut butter parfait (£7) with chocolate sorbet and peanut brittle was another inventive triumph. The peanut taste was definitely at the forefront rather than an afterthought, and the sorbet was properly deep, dark and grown-up. From a selection of homemade ice creams and sorbets (£6) mixed berry and raspberry sorbets really hit the spot. Peppercorn has rung the changes and come up with something instantly familiar yet refreshingly different. In a rapidly changing Sheffield restaurant scene it remains one of the standard bearers for excellence. Marking the 75th anniversary of his death, this exhibition comprises of over 400 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, engravings, books, ceramics, wallpaper and textiles, examining how this close-knit group deftly bridged the gap between fine art and design. Winter walks at Longshaw & Castleton After being sat around for a few days, stuffing our faces with turkey and chocolates, a walk is the perfect way to blow off the cobwebs. Longshaw, Burbage and the Eastern Moors are particularly beautiful at this time of year. Wrap up warm and follow the course of Burbage Brook through the ancient Padley Wood. Enjoy a gentle winter walk alongside a tumbling stream, through atmospheric meadows and winter woodland. What’s more, the shop and tearoom at Longshaw will also be open to refuel walkers between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. The Hope Valley and the village of Castleton are even more vibrant over the winter months. Christmas trees decorate the historic terraces of Castleton, which is an ideal base for starting walks to Mam Tor, Edale and Lose Hill. EATING OUT

A true taste of Sicily HANNAH SANDERS DISCOVERS THAT CASANOVA BRINGS A TOUCH OF THE MEDITERRANEAN TO CROOKES. s the winter chill has now settled in, I would readily hop on a plane and while away a few blissful weeks soaking up some rich Italian culture in one of Southern Italy’s real pearls. But for those of us who are stretched for money and/or time, we’re lucky that there’s an unforgettable taste of Sicily right on our doorstep. Casanova has been in the heart of Crookes since 1997 and, with personal service, welcoming atmosphere and delicious Italian cuisine it’s easy to see why it’s a firm favourite across Sheffield. With plush leather seats, candle-lit tables, high ceilings decorated with chandeliers along with homages to Fellini’s Casanova it provided the perfect setting. After a glass of prosecco (£5.75) along with a tomato and garlic bread (£4.75), I ordered the cozze marinara (£7.50) whilst my partner chose the trio de bruschetta (£6.45) for starters. My mussels cooked were delightfully fresh, presented in a free-standing crisp bread basket, served in a pool of light and slightly sweet tomato sauce, finished with a sprig of

parsley, whilst my companion’s bruschetta was beautifully toasted, topped with tomatoes and olives along with creamy goat’s cheese and roasted peppers. But, the crusty bread crowned with earthy and delicate mushrooms, crispy bacon and melted cheese won my partner over. For mains my dining companion went for the chef ’s speciality - calzone classico (£11.50). Encased in a freshly baked pizza dough, filled with ham, spinach, mushrooms and oozing mozzarella and topped with a large helping of rich Bolognese and sprinklings of cheese. I opted for risotto mare (£13.50) which came bursting full of fresh seafood including prawns, clams and squid which left my mouth tingling with flavour down to the final bite. The perfect combination of zingy tomato sauce, undertones of chili and fresh basil gave the dish a depth of flavour. After a brief respite, I couldn’t resist the homemade tiramisu (£5.50) which I was told had been a family recipe for 20 years. With its distinct layers of coffee-soaked lady-fingers, light and airy cream, cocoa powder and

drizzling of chocolate sauce it was delightfully moreish. My partner opted for the salted caramel and chocolate cheesecake (£5.50), which with its crumbly biscuit base and creamy middle satisfied his sweet tooth. Whether you are looking to be transported to the beautiful island of Sicily, or just simply wanting to enjoy a taste of authentic Italian cuisine, Salvo and his team at Casanova are sure to provide you with a memorable evening. The cast of this year’s Mother Goose production outside the Lyceum Theatre

Comic timing NO LYCEUM PANTO IS COMPLETE WITHOUT ‘SHEFFIELD LEGEND’ DAMIAN WILLIAMS. HANNAH SANDERS SPOKE TO THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE DAME WHO IS APPEARING IN HIS TENTH PRODUCTION AT THE SHEFFIELD THEATRE. antomime Dame and comedy actor Damian Williams has his audiences rolling in the aisles and gasping for breath – so much so that he should come with a health warning. His comic antics, perfect timing and great wit leave the audience laughing uncontrollably, and this year’s pantomime of Mother Goose promises to be no different. Damian is celebrating his tenth production at the Lyceum Theatre, and this year they’ll be bringing the fun-filled tale to life for the first time in Sheffield. Mother Goose is a tale of an old woman who meets a magical goose that lays golden eggs. She becomes rich beyond her wildest dreams, and has everything she ever wants apart from beauty and youth – will she be tempted by the offer of both in exchange for her prized feathered friend? The creative team behind the production is Evolution, the same group who brought the smash hit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and, will not only see the return of Sheffield legend Damian, but Jake Canuso (ITV’s Benidorm), Cara Dudgeon (Somewhere in Time), and Andy Day (CBeebies’ Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures). We asked Damian what we can expect

from this year’s pantomime, what attracts him to the Dame and what makes a good panto.

everyone to not like you. It’s a great part for audience reactions.

What can we expect from Mother Goose?

What do you think is the key to a good panto?

The panto this year is brand new. We have a new set, costumes and script and it’s great that it is something new for the Lyceum. I’ve seen some of the drawings and sketches – it is going to be spectacular. They’ve thrown a lot of things in to this – I think it might be our best yet.

A good story, one that keeps the children and adults entertained. You need to make sure the script provokes laughter and includes catchy songs. As it’s a family show it’s key to make sure there is something in there that appeals to everyone.

What do you enjoy most about panto?

I love the atmosphere in the theatre at Christmas, it’s always buzzing especially in Sheffield. The city has a really nice feel to it, and the audience brings so much excitement. What appeals to you the most about the Dame?

The Dame is part of the audience, she gets away with murder and is constantly talking and engaging with everyone. It is the best comedy role and I just love playing her. If you weren’t playing the Dame, what role would you like?

I quite enjoy playing the villain, as that is how I started. It is such a contrasting role to the Dame as you go for the “boo’s” and want

Why do you think it is important to get the younger generation involved interested in the theatre?

It’s important to get young people back into the theatre to keep them thriving. The panto is sometimes someone’s first experience of live theatre, so hopefully it will encourage them to come back. With lots of audience participation, impressive special events and brand new sets, Mother Goose promises to be an egg-cellent pantomime and perfect festive treat for the whole family. The show is running from 8 December to 7 January, to book visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.

CHRISTMAS

AS FIRST LEAD ROLES GO, THERE’S PERHAPS NONE BIGGER THAN DOROTHY IN THE WIZARD OF OZ. GABRIELLE BROOKES CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CURTAIN TO OPEN... BY HANNAH SANDERS. oin Dorothy and all her friends for the glorious technicolour production of the timeless classic, The Wizard of Oz. Skip along the yellow brick road and journey through Munchkinland all the way to Oz. Gabrielle Brookes will be taking to the stage as Dorothy in her first lead role. She trained at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and has appeared in numerous musicals on the West End, and more recently as Becca in Everybody Loves Jamie at Sheffield’s’ Crucible Theatre. Here Gabrielle talks about what we can expect from the musical and why it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts.

J

How did it feel when you were cast as Dorothy, and how do you relate to the character?

I couldn’t have been more excited. The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy holds a special place in my heart. She is optimistic and wideeyed which is 100 per cent me. She sort of has her head in the clouds and values friendship and family above anything, so I can relate to the character. What can we expect from the performance?

A lot of joy, magic and heart. Our director, Rob Hastie, stressed to us that first and foremost we are telling a great story for families. There will also be beautiful costumes and an incredible set. Story-wise you will be getting a classic but there will be a few little twists thrown in, however you will have to wait and see. What are you most looking forward to about the production?

I love being in Sheffield, as I think the audiences bring such warmth and heart to a

performance, so I am really excited to share the story with them. A friend also made me realise that although it is such an iconic story, there will be lots of children who won’t have seen it, meaning I’ll be their first Dorothy, which is amazing. What do you think is the key to a good musical?

Although it is great having all the bells and whistles – I love that part – putting the story first, and what you want your message to be is key. It’s also important to make the audience smile.

Why do you think it is important to encourage younger generations to become involved in the arts?

Above all the arts brings people together. It is a way to tell our own stories and allows us to understand each other. For children it is a great thing to develop their confidence but I think at age any the arts are important as we need to be able to understand each other’s tales. BOOKS

AFTER A LIFETIME OF EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT, SIR NORMAN ADSETTS TELLS HIS FAMILY’S STORY IN A FASCINATING NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY RMC MEDIA.

Sir Norman at work on his book

A prime place in Sheffield history ne-time ice-cream salesman becomes head of multinational company… The man they call ‘Mr Sheffield’ earns a knighthood… Leading businessman joins fight against autism… So ran the headlines. And Sir Norman Adsetts was never very far from them in an extraordinary career which reached its peak in the heady days of the mid-1980s. Now he’s in the news again, this time for making his debut as an author – at the age of 86. His new book, A Man of Sheffield – the Adsetts Story, has already attracted critical acclaim from seasoned industry-watchers. The book represents the fulfilment of another ambition for Sir Norman, who first

O

70 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

thought of the idea after researching his family history. This revealed several major surprises, and not least, one or two skeletons in the cupboard. He discovered ancestors including a combative pre-WW1 politician who became a master of the soapbox speech, a 19th century hero of the American running track – who was incidentally also a bigamist and became implicated in race-fixing scandals – and a murderer whose gruesome deeds shocked Hong Kong nearly 100 years ago, a crime for which he went to the gallows. And yet the book is more than a mere family history or business biography. It is a history of Sheffield seen through the eyes of those bearing the Adsetts name. The story begins in the late 16th century and includes authoritative detail on major historical events including the First World War and the Normandy landings, leading up to the 1980s and the regeneration of Sheffield, a process in which he was instrumental. And yet Sir Norman, whose home is still in Sheffield, is characteristically modest about his latest achievement. “It’s the story of a family that moved four miles in 400 years. So we weren’t exactly upwardly mobile!” he said. “It was a fascinating task to do the research and find history peopled by such remarkable characters. Many of them would warrant a book in their own right.”

VOICE OF AN ANGEL

HANNAH SANDERS TALKS TO SOUTH YORKSHIRE SONGSTRESS ABOUT HER NEW ALBUM OF RARE CAROLS. ith a career spanning 25 years, Penistone-born Kate Rusby is one of the finest traditional folk singers, and with capability to meld both old and new she is one of the most emotive original songwriters of her time. Kate’s beautiful, expressive vocals never fail to capture the emotional heart of her melodies, and her engaging personality and sharp Yorkshire wit have further endeared her fans. This is never truer than at Christmas as each December, Rusby embarks on a popular Christmas tour across the UK. Her Christmas concerts bring the festive season to life, resulting in a spellbinding, magical evening for all involved. Here she gives us into an insight into her career influences, inspirations and what to expect from this year’s tour.

W

72 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

What inspired your new album Angels and Men?

We have the most fantastic tradition in South Yorkshire of singing rare carols in pubs, starting the weekend after Armistice Day carrying on though until New Year’s Day. The songs were at one time widely known up and down the country but the Victorians threw them out of the churches for being too happy, so, the people who loved singing them took them to the pubs where they could combine singing with beer - there the songs have remained, passed on down the generations. Christmas is a time we can gather together as a family, leave work behind and we cook and sing, open presents and sing, drink wine and sing, walk to the pub and sing. You get the picture, I just adore Christmas, it was always made magical for us - we had no

money at all growing up but my parents always created a sparkle. What comes first when writing, the words or the melody?

Usually the melody, I’ll be sat late at night with my guitar or at the piano just messing about with chords and riffs and sometimes a tune for a song starts to form. If I can remember it the following day I’ll keep working on it. It’s all just nonsense words really at the start then the lyrics just kind of drop in there and then the story will start to build and on it goes. As a folk singer, what is the biggest draw of the folk tradition for you?

I love stories, I always have, and these old songs have great stories. In fact they are like mini films, setting up the characters and

CHRISTMAS

my parents gave me has then employed us all and it fills me with pride what we have achieved over the years, as a family and a team. The last gig of this year will be very special too, it will be the last gig of the Christmas tour, and the end of the 25th year so we are streaming it. I’m very lucky and humbled by the support from fans over the years. What’s the appeal of the festive season for you?

I adore sharing these songs with the rest of the country. Apart from South Yorkshire the only other place that has this tradition is Cornwall. I love going back to a town where we sang the songs previously, because the audience all join in the choruses - It’s one of my guilty pleasures to hear people singing these amazing songs back to us as we travel around. We always have a brass quintet with us at Christmas so that’s always just gorgeous too, being a Yorkshire lass from a mining background, I find the sound of brass instruments so moving. What can we expect from this year’s festive tour?

Well we have the new album out so there will be loads of new songs to play, can’t wait, and of course stories and laughs a plenty. Sparkles and twinkles galore! Finally, what are your plans for after your upcoming tour?

following their lives, very visual. In fact it’s how I remember the words, if you follow the story in your head you can imagine it all unfolding. Who has been the biggest influence on your music?

Apart from my parents who both sing and play, it has to be Nic Jones. He’s an incredible guitar player and when he sang, it was as if he was just telling you about something that happened to a mate. He had a bad car accident over 30 years ago and was in a coma for a long time. He could never play like he once did but when he did come back he sang on my album 20, joining me on a song called Lark. When he started singing I couldn’t help but shed a few tears, it was a ‘dream come true’ moment and so amazing to hear him sing again. What are some of your career highlights especially over the Christmas period?

Apart from being made a Patron of Yorkshire, and a Freeman of the Borough of Barnsley last year, I think the highlight is that we are celebrating 25 years of touring. When I started out all those years ago we had no idea what would happen, we set up our own record company – Pure Records, for which all my family still work. The music that

Well, back in the studio next year, this time for a ‘normal’ album, I seem to alternate between Christmas and ‘normal’ at the moment. We will also be hosting our 5th Underneath The Stars Festival. Growing up, most weekends through summer we would be at some festival or other having a whale of a time and we wanted to create a similar feeling to those festivals that used to pass on the music, songs and dance to kids, with of course beer, tea, amazing food and the most gorgeous brilliant music! Touring around the world for 25 years we’ve met stunning musicians and bands, now we get to invite them to Yorkshire for our own festival. So if you’re free on 20-22 July come along, you’ll love it!

COCKTAILS

Winter warmers WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO KICK-START YOUR CHRISTMAS DAY OR WANT A SWEET FINISH TO THE EVENING, THESE CHRISTMAS-INSPIRED COCKTAILS ARE THE PERFECT PICK-ME-UP FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON. BY HANNAH SANDERS, PHOEBE SEYMOUR & RACHEL MARTIN

here’s nothing like a festive cocktail to get you in the Christmas mood... and Sheffield is blessed with some great bars and restaurants and talented mixologists to make sure your party really swings. We sent our team of dedicated feature writers to three of the region’s best venues – Brocco on the Park, Kettle Black and West 10 – in search of the true Christmas spirit. It looks like they found what they were looking for.

BROCCO ON THE PARK Mixologist: Will Turner

***

Our expert opinion… Not only did the Ruldolftini look the part, but it was incredibly light and easy drinking. And with a base of Finlandia vodka and hazelnut liqueur, its intense nutty aftertaste lingered from the first sip. For those looking 74 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

to indulge a little more, you can opt for a dash of double cream – I opted for a soya base, but you can also ask for almond. It’s a dazzling show-stopper that’s sure to get even the Grinch amongst us into the festive spirit. A more refreshing alternative, the Sloe Gin Fizz is the perfect accompaniment for whiling away a winter’s afternoon, while tucking into something off the festive menu. Dusky berry in colour, this cocktail is smooth but big on taste, you get some fizz from the prosecco, which then reveals the blackberry undertones, before all the flavours harmonise. HANNAH SANDERS

COCKTAILS

WEST 10 Mixologist: Adrian Eastwood

***

Our expert opinion… If you need something stronger to kick-start your Christmas morning, Jonnie’s Breakfast Cocktail is a delicious twist on the classic Bucks Fizz. Though it has bitter notes of gin, it’s surprisingly refreshing. But don’t be fooled by this easy-to-drink cocktail, named after the

West 10 owner and inventor himself, Jonnie Higginbottom. Even the boozy berries have been soaked in Pinkster gin – the ideal drink to get you through a day with the in-laws. It wouldn’t be Christmas without Baileys, and whether you’re looking for something to round off your meal or a nightcap after a few at the bar, Adrian’s Christmas Mini Guinness is the perfect dessert cocktail. Based on West 10’s infamous mini Guinness shot, bartender Adrian has super-sized it, adding a white choc ice and raspberries. It’s a wacky and wonderful pudding for grown-ups. PHOEBE SEYMOUR

* 50ml Patron XO * 12.5ml Creme de menth * 12.5ml Gomme * 1 Espresso shot * Shaken well, garnished with cocoa powder, coffee beans and mint Matchmakers.

KETTLE BLACK Bar manager: Patrick Geoghegan-Shaw

***

Our expert opinion… One for the purists, the old fashioned is a stripped-back classic conjuring images of ‘Mad Men’ types propping up the bar and looking, y’know, proper suave. Kettle Black has gone one step further, though, by putting a unique spin on the simple blend of sugar, bitters and booze. If you love chocolate, and you love chilli, you might just find this is your favourite cocktail in Sheffield. Brain-child of bar

manager, Patrick Geoghegan-Shaw, the Chilli Chocolate Old Fashioned is particularly worthy of recommendation as an after-dinner must-have. Skip pudding and go straight for this nightcap. Just don’t try this if you don’t really, really love chilli. It’s a serious drink, with just the rich alcohol to offset the feverish heat. I’m a big fan of espresso martinis, so adding a seasonal twist to this cocktail just makes sense. Plus, I figure that around the holidays we all need a festive little pick-meup. The luxurious blend of creme de menth and Patron XO complement the rich espresso, conjuring up visions of candy canes and After Eight’s with every sip. What a time to be alive, folks. The Talìka in Old Copper by Faber

KITCHENEX’S NEW SHOWROOM IS DESIGNED TO SHOW OFF THEIR EXCLUSIVE RANGE OF STUNNING APPLIANCES. ecently relocated to stunning new offices at Meadowhall Business Park, you would be forgiven for thinking that KitchenEX is a new business. But in fact they’ve been trading for over five years. Established in 2012 by Jason and Vicky Harris, this family-run business has gone from strength to strength thanks to the quality of their appliances Faber and ILVE, a respected network of retailers and unbeatable levels of customer service. They started from small beginnings involving building websites and relationships with retailers which created a small number of sales. After the first year of trading customers had a keen interest in Faber extractors and in the second year of trading KitchenEX introduced the ILVE brand to their customers, which helped to more than double their sales. Five years in, they are now firmly established in the UK with both brands available from hundreds of kitchen studios and national chains. “KitchenEX are thrilled to have established two previously unknown brands, ILVE appliances and Faber extractors as key players in the appliance market in the UK. We are proud to open the head office for these two prestigious brands right here in the Steel City,” said director Jason Harris. KitchenEX is the exclusive supplier of Faber and ILVE appliances to UK retailers, and this year they opened the first UK showroom exclusively for these products. “We are delighted to announce the

HEROES

RACHEL MARTIN LOOKS AT THE ORGANISATIONS WITH THE RECIPE FOR TACKLING WASTE AND DEPRIVATION IN SHEFFIELD.

Waste not, want not… very year, we waste between 30 and 40 per cent of food due to cosmetic blemishes – best before dates, weirdlooking, misshapen foods and supermarkets cancelling or reducing their orders. And in the UK alone, 15 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year, at a cost of £19 billion. The Real Junk Food Project (TRJFP) Sheffield promotes the value of this surplus food by reducing unnecessary waste – asking customers to ‘pay as you feel’ for groceries and meals which would otherwise have ended up going to landfill. Meaning you can choose to pay using money, time or skills, and there is no set amount or minimum donation. “We want to tackle this issue on a human level,” says director of TRJFP Sheffield Rene

E

94 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Meijer. “So many people go hungry whilst perfectly good food ends up in the bin – it makes zero sense. “The pay-as-you-feel concept we operate allows people to enjoy a meal at our community centres in Upperthorpe and Norfolk Park and be social regardless of their financial situation – we believe everyone, regardless of circumstance, has something of value to offer. “Each shopper at the Sharehouse Market, Burngreave is also limited to two bags and invited to pay what they feel is an appropriate price, with those who can't afford to pay encouraged to instead donate their time by volunteering.” This year, TRJFP have opened a second

café, acquired a warehouse and introduced their ‘fuel for school’ initiative - a project which involves delivering surplus stock to eight local schools, and teaching both children and parents about the values of healthy eating, seasonality and saving food. “The time, skills and resources which have gone into food production are often ignored, as is the potential environmental harm of waste. Challenging this mind-set is the starting point to tackling food waste. “Fuel for school provides parents with access to food where they previously didn’t have and instils a greater connection to types of food they may otherwise have not been familiar with.” The food comes straight from the

HEROES

supermarkets, thanks to a deal with local outlets including Ocado, Amazon and M&S, and is in the storeroom at the market almost straight away. And there is plenty of choice too, with boxes piled high and fruit and vegetables in abundance. “Fresh produce forms a key part of the merchandise on offer at TRJFP and all the fruit and vegetables originate from supermarkets, restaurants, catering companies, allotments and growers. “Our aim is to not only reduce food waste, but to help create a more sustainable food system and further alleviate food shortages. Whilst re-educating our customers and building awareness that in fact, surplus products are perfectly fine to consume.” Christmas has always been a time of great festivities and plenty, but the TRJFP know that a great deal of edible food is consequently thrown away. Which is why, on Christmas Eve, Sharehouse Market will open its doors to customers who can snap up chocolates, mince pies, Christmas puddings, turkeys, geese and more. “Come along from midday – midnight, collect some food, contribute to the project and help us lead the way in reducing food waste all year round, not just at Christmas.” As the amount of food they receive is virtually endless, TRJFP are always looking for more volunteers, whether that be running the market, sorting or picking up food, or working in the café. “We’re only limited by the amount of people who can help. We offer roots to employment and can train you to work at a professional level. We also offer the opportunity to go on to work in the catering side of the business, where all work is offered at a living wage.” Visit: www.realjunkfoodsheffield.com for more information or email: info@realjunkfoodsheffield.com.

FOODCYCLE’S VOLUNTEERS LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE CITY’S FOOD POVERTY. Started in London by a group of students who were passionate about tackling the huge levels of food waste they saw in the city, FoodCycle combines volunteers, surplus food and spare kitchen spaces to create nutritious meals for people at risk of food poverty and social isolation. United by the simple idea that food waste and food poverty should not co-exist, FoodCycle now has 29 project hubs across the UK – with four in Sheffield alone. FoodCycle has a huge impact in the city – every week, they serve hot, healthy, three-course meals to tackle immediate hunger. Reclaiming food from supermarkets, local green grocers, bakeries and wholefood shops that would otherwise go to waste. They create spaces for people to share food and friendship and are an important source of support for vulnerable people in Sheffield, helping to build communities where they may have otherwise broken down. “We are a group of volunteers who take fresh food that would otherwise be thrown away and cook it into healthy, vegetarian meals,” said Kathy Walsh, volunteer PR, marketing and communications officer for Food Cycle Sheffield St Barts. “We have hubs in four areas of Sheffield: Sharrow, St Barts, Firth Park and Lowedges and we serve up over 100 meals every Wednesday.” FoodCycle is all about empowering people through the cycle of progression, and the meals are open to anyone in the community, particularly those affected by food poverty or social isolation. “Everyone is welcome to eat with us. The majority of our guests at Sheffield St Barts are elderly gentlemen who live on their own, usually because their wives have passed away. They may be suffering from ill health,

mental health or depression, or they don’t know how to cook. And often they have noone to talk to, aside from during a FoodCycle meal. “It’s here that they receive warmth and welcome – they come along and get a healthy meal, but also a chance to meet new people and ask about how the food was made. They can also take away extra portions and any surplus stock that hasn’t been utilised. “There are too many success stories to mention them all – every week volunteers give support, welcome and friendship to vulnerable people. But one example of a guest who has been affected really positively is an elderly gentleman who took away enough food to make a curry for the whole week.” As Christmas approaches and the weather gets colder, difficult times become even harder for many vulnerable people across Sheffield and beyond. And FoodCycle are always looking for more people to join them in the fight against food poverty. From cooks to servers, they’re looking for a host of volunteers. Or if you have more time, you could work as a food co-ordinator securing surplus food from retailers. “For people who feel socially isolated, missing out over the Christmas holidays can compound their loneliness, and as you may appreciate, it requires extra resources to ensure this doesn’t happen. “If you, or anyone you know, would like to help us to make a difference not just over the festive period, but year-round, get in touch on Facebook or go to www.foodcycle.org.uk to register to volunteer. We particularly need people who can help with welcoming our guests, serving up meals and washing dishes. Or if you’re not free on Wednesdays, you could help us with our fundraising.” Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 95

IN BRIEF

CHRISTMAS TURKEYS

A tree from Longshaw is not just for Christmas “Buying a tree from us is actually going to support your local countryside throughout the year. People who love the Peak District tell us they come to us for their Christmas tree because they like to give something back to help conserve the local landscape and wildlife,” said Mark Bull. Last year Mark and his team of National Trust rangers and volunteers sold over 1,200 freshly-cut trees at Longshaw, with all profits going back into their work to conserve the countryside of the Peak District. This year the money raised will also go into providing habitats for wading birds like snipe on the estate, bird boxes for the nationally rare pied flycatcher in Padley Woods, and conservation work to encourage dragonflies and damselflies on the Longshaw pond. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/longshaw

For this year’s Christmas dinner why not try a local fresh farm turkey from Hangram Lane Farm, Ringinglow? The turkeys are bred for flavour and eating quality. They are slow growing to maturity thus giving the turkey time to develop a layer of natural fat which makes them very moist and full of flavour. All turkeys are hung for up to 14 days which enhances flavour and eating quality. They are reared on a fourth generation family farm from day old chicks overlooking the Mayfield valley. There are five different strains of bronze and white turkeys which gives Hangram Farm a big weight range from 4kg to 12kg birds.

Leroy Lion gatecrashes a wedding to win owner a prize As a special promotion this summer the first 100 customers who took their motorhome to Red Lion Garage for a service or an MOT received their very own free ‘Leroy the Lion’ plush toy. In addition, a prize of a £50 National Trust Gift Card was awarded to three customers who posted the best holiday photo of Leroy this summer on to Red Lion Garage’s Facebook page. Mr Ian Prior from Sheffield was one of the worthy winners, posting a photo of Leroy as he gatecrashed a wedding in Cornwall during a family holiday in their Fiat Ducatto IH Conversion. Leroy will now be passed on to Mr Prior’s granddaughter who has loved listening to all his travels. “We are delighted to have won, we had lots of fun taking photos with Leroy. We always have our motorhome serviced by Red Lion – they offer a professional, reasonably priced service and their mechanics are very knowledgeable and always cheerful,” said Mr Prior.

Journey into Christmas past with Bill Kirby and St Luke’s Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas in Sheffield without a scene of the city’s industrial past by much-loved artist Bill Kirby. Sheffielder Bill’s Christmas scenes – always a snowy reminder of days gone by – are a long-running St Luke’s Hospice tradition, one of the charity’s biggest selling Christmas cards. And this year Bill has created a snowy scene of the iconic Wicker Arches as seen from Spital Hill, back in the days of steam trains and Sheffield’s original tram network. “Every year we are asked if Bill will be creating another of his very special images for us and every year he comes up with something that creates an instant piece of nostalgia,” said St Luke’s retail operations manager Marie Egerton. Bill’s design is one of more than 20 exclusive Christmas cards that are available now from all St Luke’s shops throughout the city or via the St Luke’s website at www.stlukeshospice.org.uk

The Best Dressed Lady in Yorkshire! After nine qualifying Ladies Days at the nine Yorkshire Racecourses, the finalists lined up at a blustery Doncaster Racecourse. The standard was insane this year leaving the judges with an impossible job. The judges finally decided that Leesa Smickersgill, a local lady who had qualified for the final at Doncaster Racecourse, narrowly had the edge on the others. Her stunning tartan outfit was fabulously seasonal and what’s more she made every part of it herself. And we don’t just mean the dress. Leesa made the hat and bag too! Leesa has won a beautiful diamond ring worth over £3,000 from loveVintagediamonds.com, £500 worth of vouchers from Yasmine of Bawtry and a spa weekend at the Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster. 96 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Mental health at work WITH MORE PEOPLE SUFFERING MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO SPEAK TO YOUR EMPLOYER IF YOU FEEL YOUR WELL-BEING IS AT RISK, SAYS JENNIFER WALKER. he term ‘mental health’ includes a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It can affect how workers think, feel, act, handle stress and relate to others. Mental ill health can range from feeling ‘down' to more prevalent disorders such as stress, anxiety and depression and to less common conditions such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. It was recently reported by the Health and Safety Executive, that two thirds of people in work have experienced a mental health problem. However, the percentage of employees who choose to disclose it to their employers has remained the same, 43 per cent, for the past five years. This figure remains despite high profile figures, including Prince Harry, Freddie Flintoff and rapper Professor Green, having opened up about their mental health issues. Some employees feel embarrassment about admitting to having mental health issues, however, if you are experiencing mental health issues, do try to approach your employer about your concerns. While this can be daunting, if you do not make this approach you are potentially denying yourself help and support and it can result in the mental health issues getting worse. Mental health issues left untreated can adversely impact on your performance and therefore your chances of career advancement. A recent Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development study highlighted that of workers with mental health issues 57 per cent find it harder to juggle multiple tasks; 80 per cent find it difficult to concentrate; 62 per cent take longer to do tasks and 50 per cent are potentially less patient with customers/clients. The study also found that, for the first time, stress is the major cause of long-term absence in manual and non-manual workers.

T

So, what should your employer do? Employers must provide you with a safe system of work and prevent all staff from getting ill. In other words, they have a duty of care to look after the mental health of their staff and make reasonable workplace adjustments if the mental health issue amounts to a disability. ‘Reasonable adjustments’ means making changes to the workplace or working practices to remove barriers to work for employees with disabilities; this includes nonphysical disabilities such as mental health conditions which impact your ability to carry out your work. Examples of reasonable adjustments for employees with mental health conditions could include offering a flexible start time, increased rest breaks, changing

Head of Employment Law Jennifer Walker

your workspace or altering targets, but every case is different. Reasonable adjustments must be made where the requirements of your job role, for example, your workload, targets, working hours, responsibilities or duties, put you at a substantial disadvantage when compared to other staff. Often the adjustments needed are quite simple and are effective at alleviating the disadvantage experienced by a disabled employee. Access to Work can provide advice and an assessment of your workplace needs if your mental health condition amounts to a disability or is a long-term health condition and you are already in work or about to start. Grants may be available to help cover the cost of workplace adaptations to enable you to carry out your job without being at a disadvantage. Further information can be found at www.gov.uk/access-to-work. If you are worried about disclosing a mental health illness to your employer, you can request a confidential discussion with your manager or, if you prefer, your HR department. You should not suffer unfair treatment as a result of your mental health condition if it is a disability, and if you are treated badly you should seek the advice of a lawyer as soon as possible as time limits are short.

As Oscar Wilde once wrote: ‘A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.’ “When it comes to their hard-earned money, people are right to be careful but how much value would you put on receiving financial advice?” asks Phil Smith, Director of Hamnett Wealth Management.

Call 0114 266 0374

People only spend money on the things they value. Financial advice is no different. A recent research report by the International Longevity Centre UK found that those who take professional advice are likely to accumulate more financial and pension wealth, and that those in retirement are likely to have more income particularly at older ages. “This will come as no surprise to our clients” says Phil. “We have been adding value and security to our clients financial affairs for many years. We build long-term relationships with our clients based on trust and mutual respect. Whether you are approaching retirement and want to understand the very best options in relation to your pension, or you’re trying to ensure your savings are working hard to grow or help support your income, we can help.” At Hamnett Wealth Management we take time to understand your individual needs, aims and objectives. We know that ‘one size doesn’t fit all’ and we tailor our advice and recommendations to ensure that the money you have worked hard for all your life now works hard for you. We are Independent Financial Advisers. This means we make our recommendations based on solutions from the whole of the market place and we are not restricted in the advice we provide. If you would like to find out how Hamnett Wealth Management can add value to your financial situation, please give us a call on 0114 235 3500. You are welcome to call into our office on Baslow Road, Totley or we can visit you in the comfort of your own home. Everyone at Hamnett Wealth Management would like to wish all readers of Westside a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Jonathan and Phil from Hamnett Wealth Management recently took part in a star-studded golfing event hosted by BBC presenter and patron of The Children’s Hospital Charity, Dan Walker, raising over £50,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Jonathan said: “We’re always incredibly proud to take part in this fantastic event and to support such a worthwhile charity.” The event raised funds for a SPECT CT scanner which will play a key role in the hospital’s delivery of nuclear medicine. When commercial assets meet the personal life… ZOE ROUND, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF FAMILY LAW AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, ADVISES ENTREPRENEURS TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE. “

he majority of people don’t really plan well enough for the future,” said Zoe Round, Associate Director of Family Law at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth. “We deal with financial situations where people haven’t really thought this will happen to them.” Businesses can be put at risk by far more personal matters, which is why Round urges business owners to plan carefully. “Being in a firm like this, where we have such a big and wide ranging business team, there is much more of a focus on acting for people with business interests.” “It is best to be involved right at the beginning of the story,” said Round, “You have to untangle so much, particularly if a couple are in business together or family assets are involved. For example, an up and coming entrepreneur who is doing really well and the business is flying – they don’t necessarily think that in 15 years’ time they might be sitting down talking about whether their current partner will get a share of the business they have built.” Round continued: “As business owners, having to extract that money means implications for the business. How are they going to get it out of the business? Then it’s getting to the bottom of what the business is worth and other things which are massively disruptive.”

T

102 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Round notes the high profile divorce of Asos founder Nick Robertson, forcing him to sell 1.3 million shares through a placing with institutional investors last year to fund his £70million divorce settlement. The judge was asked to decide how much Robertson’s ex-wife Janine should receive after they failed to come to an agreement on the division of shares and property owned by the entrepreneur, which took Asos from a £12million company when it floated on AIM in 2001, to a £3billion company today. Stories like that of the former Asos chief executive are the stuff of nightmares for entrepreneurs and successful businesspeople alike, but it is not often that they think about the situation early enough to mitigate it. “This is not going to happen to everyone,” said Round, “but on a more moderate level that happens to a lot of people, preparation in any event is therefore key. “We need to discuss how they want to structure the business; when setting up home with someone, having a cohabitation agreement; how to manage finances, to think about having the right shareholder agreements for instance. Much of what we do centres around providing a sense of stability and knowledge for clients going through that situation when the relationship does break down.

“In terms of planning, the main thing is getting people to think about prenuptial agreements. As advisors now we must be talking about at least the option of a prenup to all our clients but especially the entrepreneurial ones. “People were sceptical about them in previous years, that they would even have an effect, but the law has moved on massively in the past five years.” The case of German paper company heiress Katrin Radmacher in 2010 made that clear, after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the husband should be bound by his prenuptial agreement, giving very strong guidance on how prenups should be viewed. “It gave people reassurance, and meant that we can be a bit more definite that they will benefit from having a prenup in place,” Round said. Separation and divorce is going to represent a significant change to you and your family, especially if there is a business involved. Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth offer unrivalled guidance and methods to support you whatever the circumstance, help you plan appropriately and make the right decisions at the right time. MOTORING

LUXURY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME IN THIS MONTH’S MOTORING ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Six-figure luxury Customers make a point Since Maserati’s first ever SUV – the Levante – was first released to the public, it has only ever been available with a diesel engine in the UK. Maserati, with a diesel engine? Surely not. Thankfully, Maserati has listened to its fanbase and has now released a petrol version. Named the Levante S, it’ll be powered by a Ferrari engineered 3.0-litre V6 producing 430hp which no doubt will haul this majestic automotive vehicle to a top speed of 164mph. It’ll achieve the 062mph run in 5.2 seconds. Power is transferred through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. The engine is made at the Ferrari factory in Maranello. Two trim levels available: GranLusso trim and GranSport trim. Available to order now. Priced from £70,775.

New special edition Audi Q7 ranges are dripping with extras

The all-new Mercedes S-Class Coupe has finally gone on sale in the UK. There are three different models to choose from – the S 560, S 63 and S 65. At £103,715, the S560 is the ‘entry level’ variant in the range. Replacing the old S500 model, the S560 introduces a new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol unit capable of producing 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque. The S 63 starts from £127,515 and comes with a 612hp 4.0-litre V8. The S 65 comes with a monstrous 630hp 6.0litre V12 unit costing £189,615. As standard there is a host of features including: wireless phone charging, Airmatic air suspension, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 19-inch alloy wheels. S 63s and S 65s are even more luxurious.

Turn it up to 11 After the release of the DB11 coupe to mark the start of a new chapter for Aston Martin, we finally have the DB11 Volante – the open-top variant of the luxurious GT car. Powered exclusively by the same 4.0litre V8 engine found in the hard-top, it’ll produce 503hp. As with every Aston Martin, there is an extensive array of interior options to make for an exceptional scope for personalisation, enabling all customers to design a car which is tailored to their wishes. As the DB11 was the first car to be built in partnership with Mercedes-Benz, the car will be as reliable as any other German-built manufacturer, something which Aston Martin wasn’t famed for. Prices from £159,000 with deliveries expected in spring 2018.

TOP SPEC Q7 Audi has introduced new editions to their Q7 range – the Vorsprung and Black Edition. Sitting above the previous range-topping S-Line specification, the Black Edition includes 21inch alloy wheels, premium Valcona leather and a black styling pack extending to the radiator grille frame, profile trim strip, front bumper styling accents and door mirrors. There’s also a full length panoramic sunroof, a flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel, 12.3-inch TFT, rearview camera and adjustable adaptive air suspension sport. Above the Black Edition sits the Vorsprung specification. This includes even larger 22-inch alloy wheels, ultra-supportive front super sport seats, wireless charging for all Qi-enabled mobile phones, a heads up display, and BOSE 3D sound system. Driving assistance tour pack and Parking Assistance Pack are also included. Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 105
