“Lovely family firm, all the staff both in the office (especially Lauren), and the workmen that did the work were easy to deal with and dealt with queries quickly. Leah designed a lovely kitchen and utility with everything we wanted and nothing we did not want. She made some suggestions we had not thought of and it looks great and is very much user friendly.” ~ Dee Cavanagh S17 “Excellent service, excellent staff and AMAZING kitchen! My husband and I are so chuffed with our new kitchen/diner. We had 2 walls knocked through, a new wall and door built and a new kitchen installed. We could not be happier with the whole process from start to finish. Everyone at DKD are professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to care about giving us the best results.” ~ Francesca Makey S11

GARDENING
Spring guide to gardening WHETHER YOU ARE AN AMATEUR OR A SEASONED PROFESSIONAL, NOW IS THE BUSIEST TIME OF THE YEAR FOR GARDENING, AND THE NEED TO PREPARE IN ADVANCE IS CRUCIAL. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON TOP FORM THIS SPRING. BY TAMZIN KRAFTMAN.
Mow the lawn You might have been avoiding this task during the winter but cutting the grass can really neaten up your garden, and make it a more inviting place during the summer months.
Get rid of weeds As the weather becomes warmer, your garden will start to become more alive again. You might start to notice the dreaded weeds that were hiding under snow and frost. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible.
Preparing soil This step is crucial before your planting endeavours begin. Adding organic matter in the form of compost and aged manure is the best way to prepare your soil, ensuring that it is as fertile as possible.
Popular flower varieties to grow While preparing your garden for the spring is essential, why not prep for summer too by ensuring that your garden is colourful in time for the warmest months? Daffodils
★ They come in a variety of colours: orange, white, yellow, orange-red and salmon. ★ They also need full sun and welldrained soil to survive. Hyacinths
★ They bloom in a range of colours, 10 www.sheffieldvibe.com
such as white, pink, purple, blue, red, yellow and soft orange. ★ Bulbs will rot in excessively wet soil and growth will be stunted in very dry soils.
★ They will not flower in shade. Tulips
★ They grow well in soil rich in organic matter. ★ Most grow in an open position full sun, although some tolerate partshade. ★ They are ideal for growing in rock gardens. Pansies
★ One of the best flowers to plant during the spring. ★ Usually placed in containers. ★ They need to be planted in the sun or a spot partly in the shade in well-drained soil.

GARDENING
Popular vegetables and fruit to grow in your garden With the pandemic causing everyone to spend time a lot of time at home, more and more people have started to use this extra time to hone their gardening skills and grow their own food. If you’re thinking of giving it a go this spring, April is the perfect time to get started as it gives your fruit and veg plenty of time to grow. Focus on how much space you have in your garden; this will tell you what you can grow. If space is limited, think about buying ‘dwarf selections’ or ‘patio’ vegetables.
Veg Carrots
★ Best grown in the open ground and in hot weather. ★ If the foliage starts wilting, water the carrots every ten days. ★ Make sure you weed before planting; if you let weeds grow, they could overcrowd the carrots. ★ Be careful when weeding that you don’t crush the foliage, the smell can attract carrot flies, which can lay eggs. Putting a barrier over the carrots can prevent this. Cucumbers
★ Best grown in a greenhouse but can
be grown outdoors in a sheltered and warm area. ★ If growing in a greenhouse, you must water little and often to keep the potting compost or soil evenly moist. ★ You can train the main stem up a vertical wire or cane by pinching out the growing point when it reaches the greenhouse roof. ★ It’s important to use sticky traps, to catch whiteflies from excreting ‘honeydew’ over the plant. Lettuce
★ Lettuce is seen as one of the easier vegetables to grow and can be sown throughout the year if it is protected against the cold. ★ Once the young plants have grown, they can be thinned out and added to salads, or you can wait for the firm heart to form. ★ Snails and slugs are a common problem for growing lettuce but can be controlled through eggshell barriers, copper tape, and biocontrols. Potatoes
★ After the potatoes have been planted and the stems are 23cm high, it is essential that you start ‘earthing up’, dragging soil up covering the stems to produce a 15cm high range. ★ ‘Earthing up’ is essential, it protects developing potatoes from a substance called light. Light potatoes are green in colour and are poisonous.
Fruit Citrus
★ While limes and grapefruits might not survive a British summer, lemons and kumquats are a gardener’s favourite. ★ These can be grown outdoors in the summer in pots, and need regular feeding and watering. ★ Once full grown, they can be left on the tree until needed. Tomatoes
★ Tomatoes are ideal for growing in containers, either outdoors in a sunny spot, or in a greenhouse. ★ They need to be sowed in early spring and are widely available from garden centres. ★ After initially potting a few together in a small pot, you will need to move them to individual pots. ★ Regular and consistent watering is crucial to avoid blossom end rot and tomato splitting which may result in mould. Strawberries
★ Strawberries are perfect to grow if you are tight on space, as they grow in containers, and even in hanging baskets. ★ They need planting in early spring with a high potassium general fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4. ★ If squirrels or birds are a problem, protect fruit with a wire mesh or a net. www.sheffieldvibe.com 11

ewly-opened on Townhead Road in Dore, Dales & Peaks is an independent, family-owned estate agency launched by Sarah and John Currey in 2006. This new office joins existing locations in Chesterfield and Matlock and serves this south-west corner of the city as well as the Peak District. Sarah and John’s aim was, and still is, to offer a personal level of service expected by a family-owned business, alongside a professional approach backed up by years of experience within the property and finance sector. Dales & Peaks started out as a letting agent and quickly became one of the leading agents locally, representing some of Chesterfield’s most iconic developments, such as Bradbury Place, Belmont Park and Piccadilly Heights. Son Tom joined the business in 2016 to develop the sales division, rebrand the company and raise their game on marketing and exposure. With a modern approach to marketing and a strong eye on the company’s personal and professional ethos, sales are growing drastically. Dales & Peaks was the first estate agent in the north to introduce 3D tours as well as professional photography as standard, although the latter has become more common across the industry. Tom oversaw a big move into social media – you’ll find them on Facebook and Instagram – which helped to enhance their services even further. The family business consistently achieves 99.96 per cent of asking price
on sales and holds the number one spot for property views locally on portals like Rightmove and Zoopla. Tom will be heading up the new Dore office alongside Debbie Seymour, who has been with Dales & Peaks since 2010, and Holly Parker. “We’d been wanting to move into Sheffield and Dore is one of those areas you would like to be,” said Tom. “It’s close proximity to the centre of Sheffield, as well as the Peak District, makes it a very attractive area and we feel it sits well with our brand. “As an independent, family-owned business we have the capacity to look after everyone individually and offer a real personal service. We can handle the whole process from start to finish.” Last year proved to be a very good year for the property industry, with this corner of south-west Sheffield performing particularly well, something Tom and his team hope to capitalise on. "Buoyant markets in both 2020 and 2021 have created strong momentum going into 2022," added Tom. "Sellers seem understanding that they have to put themselves in the best possible position to be able to proceed on their dream home when it comes available and buyers seems willing to wait for the right property, often with strong competition. “We’d advise anyone looking to move that they are in a position to proceed as quickly as possible.” The Dales & Peaks Dore office is open now – pop in and let them help you find your perfect property.

EDUCATION
School choice: the big decision GAYNOR JONES, PRINCIPAL OF HOPE VALLEY COLLEGE IN HOPE, DERBYSHIRE WRITES THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF EDUCATION FOCUSED ARTICLES EXCLUSIVELY FOR WESTSIDE. electing a secondary school for your children is one of the most important decisions a family will make. The element of choice of state funded school has been available to parents and carers since the 1988 Education Reform Act. But how much choice within the state sector really exists? For some families the process is straight forward; they live in the catchment area of the school they prefer, and the school has space. For others, it is not so simple. Sheffield and Derbyshire are blessed with a good number of highly sought-after schools which provide an excellent education. However, as a number of families have discovered, there are not enough places at the schools of choice for all of the families who want them. The situation in which we find ourselves this year – with many families disappointed with their allocated secondary school – may have been exacerbated by another impact of the 1988 Education Reform Act: the introduction of GCSE league tables.Yet, how much value do league tables add following two years of a global pandemic during which those tables have not been updated? The Ofsted inspection provides a further dilemma: should we only choose schools with an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating and what should we do if our local school isn’t yet ‘outstanding’? Further considerations in choice of school include practicalities such as transport costs and viable travel routes. City-based families are typically not used to the type of journeys to school that are commonplace for their more rural neighbours.Yet the consideration of a
S
slightly longer bus ride to school might open up a range of hitherto unconsidered educational options. So, what’s my advice? As someone who has worked in education for over 20 years in a variety of schools, I would say: look for a school with an ethos that will suit your children as they become young people. Above all else, I encourage you to visit, get a feel for the school, and trust your instincts. At Hope Valley College, we share the ethos of Chorus Education Trust, of which Sheffield’s Silverdale and Westfield Schools are also a part. This ethos is encapsulated by the phrase: ‘outstanding achievement for all’. Achievement takes many forms so we are careful to offer a range of subjects for study that will be valued and enjoyed by our students. Our academic results make us one of the best performing non-selective schools in Derbyshire and this is matched by the extra-curricular opportunities we offer in our wonderful rural environment. Indeed, our students travel from Sheffield and across Derbyshire to be a part of the Hope Valley community.
Whatever your criteria, choices or final destination, always remember that teachers and leaders want the very best for the children in their care and will work hard to make sure this happens. We are aware you have trusted us with your most precious gift – your child.Young people will thrive when they believe they are in the right place for them and this confidence comes from the adults around them. IN BRIEF
Burning Man comes to Chatsworth Huge sculptures from Burning Man, held in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, USA will be making their UK debut at Chatsworth this spring at an ambitious and free-to-access exhibition in the Derbyshire estate’s parkland. Radical Horizons: The Art of Burning Man at Chatsworth is a large-scale exhibition in the publicly accessible 1,000 acre park surrounding the house, which sees 12 monumental sculptures from Burning Man, going on display in the UK for the first time from 9 April to 1 October. Chatsworth and Burning Man were introduced by Sotheby’s, who saw a synergy between the two organisations in their commitments to creativity and community. The exhibition features eight existing sculptures and four works built on site, including three new participatory sculptures that will be created in the parkland with the help of visitors and local community groups over the course of the year, mirroring the build process at Burning Man that sees teams of volunteers gathering in the desert to create new artworks. Free to access and enjoy for all, the exhibition also benefits from a dedicated engagement programme working with communities of people who generally find Chatsworth hard to access, offering activities designed to leave a legacy of creative possibility and new connections with people. Kim Cook, Director of Creative Initiatives at Burning Man, said: “We’ve come to understand Chatsworth as a place to foster innovation, creativity, thoughtfulness and thinkers since its early days, something that is also central to our work and ethos at Burning Man. Our hope is that the art in the landscape will provoke joy, new ways of viewing, and be an invitation to make up your own story about meaning as you explore the beautiful expanse of Chatsworth.” Visit www.chatsworth.org/events/burning-man to find out more.
Lord Mayor does the honours Two Sheffield school children received personal congratulations from Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Gail Smith, after they beat over 100 entries to become the winners of a now annual childrens’ art competition. The event was organised by leading Sheffield law firm Graysons as part of their sponsorship of the city’s celebrated Art In The Gardens event. Harry Simpson of Forge Valley School, who won the over 9s competition, was joined by under 9s winner Kiera Wade of St Wilfrids Primary School. The competition was judged by local artist Alan Pennington who helpedorganise the event. Peter Clark, managing partner of Graysons, said: “It has been a real privilege to be involved in Art In The Gardens and one of the highlights has definitely been organising the kids’ art competition. The standard of entry was incredibly high once again and we had a bumper number of entries. There’s no doubt Harry and Kiera were worthy winners.”

Hot food for the homeless To celebrate Chinese New Year, which is the Year of the Tiger and began on 1 February, new restaurant Jiang Nan worked with Sheffield-based homeless charity, The Archer Project, to provide hot meals to those most in need. Also supporting this collaboration was Yepss, an online convenience store for Asian foods, the Little Snack Bar and Hong Kong House Chinese Takeaway. For over 30 years The Archer Project, based at Sheffield Cathedral, has supported thousands of people who were homeless in Sheffield. Over that time the service has changed to add new ways of working so that instead of aiming to get people into accommodation, they aim to help people to build fulfilling lives.

The next level
TRANSFORM YOUR HOME WITH A LUXURIOUS AND ELEGANT FLOATING STAIR. hether you require a brand-new bespoke staircase or a staircase renovation, the team at Stairkraft is always willing to step things up to the next level for their customers, by offering an alternative to the mass-produced staircases you find in many homes. Established in 2011 and with over 20 years of experience as staircase manufacturers, Stairkraft are a staircase specialist firm who provide bespoke staircases, balconies, canopies and balustrades to homes across the region. The Faux Cantilever stair, an ingenious and inspired system of support, which eliminates the requirement for either, a substantially built support wall, or incorporation of any additional steel support frame; normally a prerequisite of a cantilever stair. For prospective clients refurbishing and replacing an existing stair, the faux cantilever can be installed without the mess and disruption caused by the removal of the existing plaster finishes (which is not necessary), making for a
W
more timely and hassle-free installation experience. Together with the obvious time benefit, the faux cantilever stair can be manufactured and installed for a lower
price than that of a conventional cantilever stair. All stairs start by being created in-house utilising the latest 3D CAD systems. They are manufactured in Sheffield employing the latest technology and engineering but also embracing traditional craftsmanship. The addition of a faux cantilever can create an exclusive and desirable living space and is a great way to enhance your home and add value to your property. “The main advantage to working with a specialist company is the seamless transition as the build progresses, executing the design from concept to installation – with the client’s approval at every stage,” said a spokersperson for Stairkraft. “In comparison, architects must often hand over drawings to a fabricator, who may not have the ability to modify the design as the build evolves, and by the time, it may be too late to rectify any potential issues. Here at Stairkraft we instil a strong company philosophy of creating unique, individual designs for our clients keeping it simple, but far from basic. Our floating staircases have a minimalistic feel to them without compromising on luxury.” Stairkraft offer a complete service from survey and design to installation. The stairs are crafted from a range of beautiful materials such as natural oak, walnut or contemporary corian complemented with premium-grade glass, all made in the UK. All staircases are installed by Stairkraft’s skilled operatives and the company offers a complete service, from design to completion. The stairs are available in a range of materials, styles and finishes, including glass treads, making your stair a unique and individual feature. Wanting to upgrade your existing staircase? I’d arranged to meet sculptor Jim Milner on what was supposed to be a sunny March day, if the local weather forecast was to be believed. In typical fashion, what I found as I drove north out of Sheffield was grey skies, fog and rain. Lots of it. So much for spring. Jim lives in a lovely stone cottage in Thurlstone, just outside Penistone, which is his family home and is also the base for his workshop and gallery. In the semiwild garden, to the rear of the property, you’ll find plenty of his sculptures nestled among the trees, forming part of the stone walls and standing proudly beside the stream that passes through the space. Even with the rain beating down, it’s a tranquil, calming space with the moisture giving the polished garden ornaments extra sheen. You can only imagine what it’s like in the summer months. Sixty-eight-year-old Jim has been carving stone since childhood but turned it into a full-time career ten years ago, although he’s now semi-retired. A sheep farmer for most of his working life, he gave up farming as a result of the BSE crisis. “Cattle farmers received compensation but there was nothing for sheep farmers,” recalls Jim. “As a result the price of my lambs dropped from £45 per head to around £18 - I could no longer make a living.” Jim made the decision to return to university in 2002, studying Maths and Education, with the intention of becoming a teacher. He ultimately decided not to pursue this career path upon graduating and instead used his lifelong love of mathematics, in particular geometry, in his sculpture. “I’d had many inspirational teachers [at university] including David Lingard who introduced me to the study of the history of mathematics, and Liz Thompson would taught me solid geometry,” Jim says. “My present sculpture designs are mainly experiments in solid geometry.” Although you’d imagine sculpture to be largely creative, mathematics plays a huge role in Jim’s precise designs. “I draw a series of geometric designs on paper and sometimes io the computer, copy them onto the stone using a huge compass and straight edge and a pencil and then carve them,” he explains. It’s these geometric designs which have proved most popular and encouraged Jim to pursue his hobby as a career.

“I first started sculpting when I was 16 years old,” Jim says of his introduction into sculpting. “I’d found an old stone chisel in my father’s tool shed and fancied having a go at it. I found a stone in the garden, drew the outline of my left hand on it and then carved an engraving into it. “The inscription says Lavabo inter Innocentes Manus Meas, which is Latin for ‘I will wash my hands among the innocent’. I had been brought up a Catholic and that was what the priest said when he was washing his hands before the consecration in the Latin Mass 50 years ago. “I had been a server boy at the altar holding a bowl and pouring water over his hands for him to wash. I’m no longer a Catholic, but the experience made a great impression on me then.” Jim has recently brought his son, Sam, on board and has worked closely with designer Elizabeth Stocker, who has helped him develop the business side of his enterprise, including a website, and, more importantly, sell his sculptures into the wider world. Indeed he has exported works to the likes of Ireland, New Zealand and the USA. “Elizabeth means far more to my
Jim’s first ever carving - his handprint inscribed with the words Lavabo inter Innocentes Manus Meas
business than just as a designer,” Jim says of Elizabeth. “She has designed all the inscriptions for the public monuments I’ve made, like war memorials, I then get a very skilled stone sculptor called Dave Bedford to engrave them – he is a more skilled engraver than I am – and then Elizabeth paints the insides of the inscriptions. “She used to help manage her husband, Nigel Tyas’s, business before he retired and it was sold a year ago. Nigel is a blacksmith and Nigel Tyas Ironworks Ltd make designer work – mainly light fittings. ““I would have made hardly any sales without her website. She has been a Jim’s outdoor workshop
054 - 057 WSide Apr22 09/03/2022 17:24 Page 4
wonderful friend to me and is fantastic to work with.” It was while working with Elizabeth that Jim found himself on BBC Look North which had a big impact on his business. “Elizabeth applied for and got a small government grant for me to go towards business development,” he explains. “We decided to spend the money by hiring a publicist to write a flyer about the work. Quite a lot of local papers and magazines took up the story and then BBC Look North sent out their reporter, Carla Fowler, to take pictures in the garden and to interview Elizabeth and myself. “Carla’s enthusiasm really came through in her article and this lead to a lot of sales and commissions over the next two years.” As well as Elizabeth and Dave, Jim also works with Hampshire-based Andrew Illingworth who has a business called FiveTwo. Andrew organises exhibitions in country house gardens of sculptures and Jim now gets half his commissions via his business. As well as being a showcase for his many sculptures, the garden of Rose Cottage also houses Jim’s workshop although he largely works outside in the corner of the field – weather permitting of course. He usually works with blue stone, all sourced from local quarries, which is a lot harder than sandstone and much denser, so it doesn’t absorb much moisture. It
weathers really well, hardly losing any of the striking bluegrey colour, and when wet – as I experienced on my visit – takes on an Jim’s son Sam almost mirror-like quality. It makes for a striking addition to any garden. Jim’s sculptures vary in size, and cost, and the largest he’s made took six weeks to complete and is now exhibited at a Hampton Court show garden. One of his favourite pieces, though, proved particularly attractive for a visiting Sheffield couple. “You never know whether you’re going to like a work when you are carving it, and so I can’t wait to see it when it is finished,” says Jim. “My favourite has been quite a small one. A couple from Sheffield loved it when they saw it on my kitchen windowsill and bought it. I had called it Blue Rhapsody – not after the Gershwin piece of music, but because of a line from a Bob Dylan song: Everything is gonna be smooth like a Rhapsody when I paint my masterpiece. I thought that this was probably my masterpiece! “I carved a larger version, but didn’t like it as much. Things work differently at different scales.”
Jim is now looking forward to spring really coming into its own and transforming his garden, when the last of the snowdrops will be replaced by a riot of colourful plants and flowers, thus giving his works of art a whole new dimension. He’s also waiting on some potentially exciting news: “A new elite sixth form mathematics academy is now starting to be built in London, and they are interested in using my maths and geometry engravings to decorate the interior and grounds, so I’m in negotiations with them just now,” he says. “Maths and geometry are one of my passions, so I really hope this comes off.” Hopefully this is the next step in an already illuminating and illustrious career. You can view Jim’s work on his website – www.jimmilnersculpture.co.uk – but visitors are welcome by appointment. www.sheffieldvibe.com 57

No-fault divorce – the new no blame way to separate BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ FAMILY TEAM DISCUSSES THE NEW LEGISLATION. fter a long wait, ‘no-fault divorce’ will, at last, become a reality on 6 April 2022. The biggest shake-up in divorce law in 50 years will allow couples to divorce or dissolve a civil partnership without one of them attributing blame to the other. There is widespread support, including from legal professionals and judges, to end the need for couples to blame one another for the breakdown of their marriage or civil partnership, bring the law in line with modern-day life and accept the fact that some couples just drift apart and don’t want to blame each other. Until 6 April 2022, if a couple does not want to attribute blame, the shortest amount of time of separation before one person can petition for a divorce or dissolution of civil partnership is two years – as long as there is consent from both. Without consent, there needs to be five years’ separation before one can petition. This has led to many couples claiming unreasonable behaviour in their petitions. In the period 2016-2018, almost half of all divorce petitions were based on unreasonable behaviour, according to The Office for National Statistics (ONS). New, no-fault divorce rules will mean that:
A
• Spouses/civil partners won’t have to claim one of the five facts (adultery, unreasonable behaviour, two-year separation with consent, five-year separation without consent or desertion) to petition for a divorce • One or both of a couple can make a statement saying that the marriage has irretrievably broken down – currently only one spouse/civil partner can file for
divorce/dissolution • The other spouse/civil partner will not be able to contest the divorce unless it is based on legal validity, jurisdiction, fraud, coercion or procedure • Legal jargon will be removed, and the language made easier. The decree nisi will become the conditional order, the decree absolute will become the final order and the petitioner (the person who submits the application) will become the applicant. • There will need to be 20 weeks between the application date and the court granting the conditional order • There will be a minimum period of six weeks between receiving the conditional order and applying for final order – this is the same as the current situation No-fault divorce will eliminate situations, such as that of the widely publicised case of Owens v Owens, in which Tini Owens petitioned for divorce on the basis of unreasonable behaviour as her husband had behaved in a way that meant she could not reasonably be expected to live with him. He contested the divorce and it was denied in court. The case went to the Court of Appeal, but it was denied again, although judges
at that court said they had ‘uneasy feelings’ – but could do nothing until Parliament changed the law. Ms Owens had to wait for five years to petition for her divorce, which would not be the case under the new rules, where her husband would not be able to contest her application. Financial issues are not covered by the new law. They will continue to be dealt with separately to the divorce. Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family team says: “New legislation is well overdue. Couples have been waiting until April so that they can apply for a divorce without having to put blame on their partner. Attributing blame often leads to additional stress and acrimony in the long run.The new law will hopefully allow couples to separate more amicably – and be less costly and complex when one person has contested the divorce – and focus clearly on moving on with their lives more quickly.” For further information on divorce, dissolution or separation, visit our web pages at www.graysons.co.uk/family, or, if you would like to discuss a family law issue, call our experts now. We can arrange a fixed-fee one-hour meeting in which we can discuss your individual issues, give you an overview of the law relating to your case, advise what the next steps can be and what the cost implications will be. Cloudy2Clear Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 327,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems. When talking to the MD of Cloudy2Clear Marcus McGee it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Marcus commented: “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again.” For a free quotation please call 0800 61 21 118 or visit www.cloudy2clear.com

If the ring doesn’t fit... HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW OUR GOLDSMITHS RESIZE A RING? PA JEWELLERY’S STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE WILL GIVE YOU A LITTLE INSIGHT… he first step in resizing a ring is to look at how your ring would cope with the process and assess whether it can be altered as needed, considering the design, condition and amount of alteration required. Here we use the example of making a platinum and diamond solitaire ring three sizes larger. We submerge the stone in water and gently heat the back of the shank, to show us if it already has any joins in it. If we find a join we’ll cut there or if there isn’t we’ll just cut it in the middle. Now the ring is ready for us to add metal. We look through our reserved platinum for a suitable piece; slightly wider and thicker than the ring that we’re resizing. Once an appropriate piece has been found we cut to the correct length (one size is generally 1.1-1.5mm), then very gently open out the cut that
T
80 www.sheffieldvibe.com
we have made in the ring with specially shaped pliers. The piece that we’re adding gets delicately balanced into the gap that we’ve just made for it, the stone goes back into the water and the piece is soldered in place using a blowtorch. Next we begin to blend in the new piece, using a half-round file on just the inside of the ring first. The ring then goes onto a steel mandrel (which is just a big steel cone for making things round) and we gently hammer around it to encourage it to be a perfect circle again. Then we can check that we have the new size right and make any necessary changes before continuing with blending and refinishing. Once we’re happy with the size we can carry on blending until the piece isn’t visible at all. This involves checking the shape of the ring from all angles,
using a range of files to make the shape neat and smooth on inside, outside and around the edges. A good blend helps ensure that you won’t be able to see the joins. Finally, a good clean and polish and it’s like we were never there! If you have any questions about resizing or any other repairs or alterations, please ask one of our experienced jewellers for answers or advice. We carry out a wide range of repairs in our on-site workshop from resizing to completely re-making or handcrafting brand new pieces.

Where tradition meets technology OFFERING THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, TIAGO’S BESPOKE JEWELLERY CAN MAKE YOUR WEDDING DAY EVEN MORE SPECIAL. t’s the dress that so often takes centre stage at a wedding but choosing the right ring can be just as significant – if not more so. After all, while you may only wear your bridal gown once, you’ll wear your wedding band for a lifetime. When it comes to choosing the right ring, it’s important to choose the right jeweller too. Tiago, perched on the corner of Archer Road and Abbeydale Road, are specialists in creating bespoke pieces and can design something truly unique for your special day. Owner David Raynes has 36 years’ experience in the industry and, alongside his team, takes great pride in making the whole experience of designing and creating rings and other bridal jewellery personal to you. He understands how important it is to get each piece exactly right and has the knowledge and skills to be able to do exactly that. “I can spend hours with customers discussing a design,” he said. “It’s something that you will look at every day for the rest of your life, so I encourage people to come in, have a chat, find out your options, then go away and think about it.” There are no hard-sell tactics at Tiago, just friendly, honest advice. “People enter as customers and leave as friends,” added David. To create bespoke pieces David blends CAD/CAM technology and traditional hand-making techniques. There is an impressive portfolio of realistic CAD drawings showcasing exactly how your ring will look, and David even offers an additional service of 3D printed models,
I

so you can actually try on a version of the final design to get an accurate idea of proportions and dimensions. And, if you think a bespoke piece of jewellery will cost you an arm and a leg, fear not. “With the advancements in technology, something that might have took three to five days to make, only takes a few hours,” David reassures. “This means the labour costs are less and we can pass these savings on to our customers, so bespoke work can now be available to more people.” As well as beautiful rings David has
become well known as the first jeweller in the city to make genuine Sheffield steel wedding bands and cufflinks. Using steel from one of the few remaining local companies, they are made entirely in the city and beautifully represent its industrial heritage. Tiago’s on site workshop has been further improved recently with the addition of a laser engraver. This allows personal touches such as handwritten names, messages, dates and logos to be added quickly and easily without the rings having to be sent away. And as well as the bespoke design service, Tiago’s recently revamped showroom stocks over 1,000 sample pieces and finished jewellery and offers all the services a normal workshop would do, from polishing to fitting. With free parking outside, there’s never been a better time to drop by. Tiago 891-893 Abbeydale Road Sheffield, S7 2BJ Tel: 0114 258 5020 tiagojewellery.co.uk

Where’s your head at?
HOW TO DRESS YOUR HEAD UP USING HOODS, SCARVES, HEADBANDS AND MORE. BY MARIA ILIFFE.
tyling outfits proves a real challenge for many people, not knowing how to take a fit from nice to stylish can be daunting. However, often this is where we go wrong, try not to over style your outfit but instead add to your head. Using a simple scarf, headband, clip or hood can help complete or completely change a look.
S
Scarves Wearing a scarf is one of the easiest ways to add an extra layer, change the style, dress up or down or alter a look, with just one item. For winter this is an especially good styling idea as it will help to keep you warm. However, with all the different shapes, sizes and colours available, scarves work well any time of the year. One way to style larger scarves, would be around your head, wrapped around or knotted on the neck and as a baggy loop over your head, this creates the image of a detached hood.
Alternatively adding a smaller scarf through your trouser belt loops as a fashion belt, will give you a chance coordinate or bring an extra pattern or pop of colour, in a subtle way.
Headbands Headbands also provide a great opportunity to bring more layers into an outfit and breathe life into an everyday and potentially overworn look. With headbands often we stick to the traditional styles, however, it’s better to think outside the box, find longer styles that cover half or all of the top of your head. Often going bigger you can change a whole look with a headband instead of seeing it as a simple or unnecessary accessory.
Clips Using hair clips, as simple as it seems, can take your hair style from a 1 to a 10.
Regardless of how long or short, dyed or natural your hair is, use hairclips to your styling advantage. Instead of imagining the usual black bobby pins, why not think about big, coloured clips matching something in your outfit. Clips can add a layer to a look and hold back your hair or fringe for example, at the same time.
Snoods/hoods A new trend seen on the runway and now being integrated into street fashion: stand-alone hoods. Adding a dethatched hood can complete or completely change a look, by giving an option for you to dress your head as well as your body. Including a hood is also great for practicality, when garments don’t have hoods it’s easy for your hair and day to be ruined by the weather. Of course knitted hood can’t protect you from a storm, but it’s great for warmth, wind and most importantly, style. www.sheffieldvibe.com 89

HE HAS PLENTY OF GREATEST HITS TO CHOOSE FROM AND ARRIVES IN SHEFFIELD THIS MONTH. MARIA ILIFFE SPOKE TO MARTI PELLOW. enowned musician, Broadway star and previous member of Wet Wet Wet, Marti Pellow is celebrating his musical career with the latest ‘Greatest Hit Tour’. Starting in Dublin and heading straight to Sheffield City Hall, Marti will make is way around England and Scotland from this April. Excited to bring his fans the very best of his musical career, expect Marti’s hit songs alongside a few from his latest Stargazer album – “the clue’s in the title” said Marti in the following interview.
R
94 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Speaking with Pellow, he said: “[The tour] is a celebration of the songs people are familiar with… I feel lucky to be able to deliver what people love.” From singing popular chart hits with Wet Wet Wet from the young age of 17, Marti is known for favourites such as, Sweet Little Mystery, Love Is All Around and Angel Eyes. Proudly one of the biggest selling artists of the nineties, Pellow sung knowing his was going to be a superstar. When his father, a builder, told him to get a
proper job, he said it was pointless, because he was destined to be a huge pop star. There was simply no doubt in his mind, he says. And so it turned out. With the band going from success to success, the fame kept them rolling full steam ahead until their first separation in 1997 and then again in 2017. Battling with an alcohol and heroin addiction, the Scottish singer left the band and life behind in 1999 and now he sings with sobriety and pride.

He began his career as a solo artist with Chris Difford of Squeeze. The two met while they were patients in The Priory in March 1999. Difford subsequently became Pellow’s lyricist and unofficial helper. Marti explains: “Performing concerts, acting and my own songwriting - as an artist I feel a lot more settled in this world.” Marti has always had a lust for music, as he explains: “I used to love listening to my mum and dad’s record collection… I would see my favourite bands live and my stars singing on TV and thought ‘I want to do that’, and realised at a very young age that I wanted to sing.” Lockdown presented Pellow with the perfect opportunity to write his latest album, Stargazer. He said: “I finally got to write the songs that let me pay homage to all my heroes. I can’t wait to sing those songs live for the first time.” Singing credit to stars such as Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Anthony Newley and David Bowie, in a series of selfpenned songs, his impression of the soul and funk-infused mid-70s Bowie is rather wonderful and Pellow says he had a great time making the album. Inspiring a different tone, he wrote the album on his guitar, instead of his usual piano, bringing a completely different feel, he said: “It was surprisingly one of my most successful albums, it was very well received.” Lockdown was a huge influence on Pellow’s new tour for numerous reasons. Singing online for fans, Marti enjoyed his musical sessions and was inspired to take them further. “I was inundated by beautiful messages from fans asking me to organise a tour once we come out of these terrible times. Twelve million people tuned in for the sessions and each one of you have inspired me to make this tour happen.” Falling in love again with the music of his past, Marti wanted to put together a show that celebrated all the wonderful music throughout his career. Pellow’s career spans many roles and his work with musicals started in 2008, following his appearance in Sir Tim Rice’s concert revival of his musical
Chess, playing the “Arbiter”. Performing in numerous West End and Broadway shows, Marti has made a proud, worldwide name for himself in the musical industry. With his love for shows, Marti, along with his friends, are currently writing a musical; he shared: “It’s based on my home country and based on traditional Scottish folk history, it’s mystical like Lord of The Rings.” Now in the pipeline and expected to be touring the UK in many years to come, Pellow is excited about this new venture and hopes fans and enthusiasts alike, will be too. However, his next move is expected much sooner, already announced, advertised and eagerly
anticipated: the Pellow Talk Tour. He explains: “Think of it as coming back to my place for a night of stories and songs. Pellow Talk is a chance to learn all about me, not just as a singer and songwriter, but as a boy and a man.” Marti is excited to speak with his fans “without a mask”, so they can get to know the real Marti Pellow and everything in his making. With many achievements in his past and many more to come, Pellow’s next performance: The Greatest Hits Tour is commencing this month and he hope’s you’ll be there too. Get that spring feeling OLIVIA WARSOP GETS GOOD VIBES - AND DELICIOUS FOOD AT CUBANA. here’s nothing like that first evening post-Christmas when you realise it’s not quite as dark outside as it was yesterday, and you finally feel ready to ditch your cosy pyjamas and actually go somewhere special. If this is the vibe you’re feeling too then do what we did and go to Cubana! An endless variety of dishes, an in-exhaustive selection of drinks, and an unbeatable party atmosphere – it’s the perfect early spring night out! After being seated we grabbed the drinks menu and made sure we were cocktail-in-hand while pouring over the tapas selection. In additional to over 40 cocktails Cubana also offers a wide range of wines starting from around £4.90 a glass, as well as a great selection of bottled and draught beers and ciders. That’s not forgetting the tequila, rum and after dinner drinks available too. With the food menu, they provide a useful guide to help you navigate how many dishes to order per person, depending on your appetite. The menu is very inclusive with many vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. If you’re fancying an early dinner Cubana runs a‘Happy Tapas’ offer Sunday-Friday until 6pm where you can get any two

tapas dishes for £10.50 or £5 off any of the set menus. After much deliberation we made our choices and waited in anticipation for our food. For about 30 seconds. The service at Cubana is fast and main dishes are served piping hot so you can graze each dish throughout the meal. A perfect set up for large parties. Pollo y chorizo arrived first - chicken breast with Spanish chorizo sausage and sliced red peppers, cooked in a creamy tomato and paprika sauce (£6.25) - and was quickly followed by Chorizo y huevo con patatas - crispy potato pieces sautéed with spicy chorizo and topped with a fried egg (£6.50). Next up was Res y cebolla, thinly sliced pieces of mouth-wateringly tender ribeye steak sautéed with sweet caramelised red onions (£6.95), then Risotto con setas (£6.25), a creamy wild mushroom risotto made with arborio rice, onions and olive oil topped with sharp parmesan cheese. Next, Gambas pil pil, huge pan-fried tiger prawns cooked with garlic and served with sweet roasted peppers and a dash of chilli (£6.95). A personal favourite was the Jamón y queso de cabra, rich, oven baked goats cheese wrapped in Serrano ham and
served on a bed of caramelised red onions (£6.95). A cheese lover’s musthave dish! We heroically found room for dessert and tucked into beautifully delicate layers of shortcrust pastry filled with lemon patisserie cream and topped with pine nuts, La tarta de la abuela (£5.95). And refreshing white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake (£5.95) with an all butter biscuit base and strawberry compote. Our evening at Cubana was fabulous from start to finish and always is, whether you’re there for the food, the drink or the party. Spring is right around the corner so do yourself a favour and book a table! Cubana Unit 4 Leopold Street, Sheffield, S1 2JG Tel: 0114 276 0475 cubanatapasbar.co.uk

Exceptional standard SAM PEGG TAKES A VISIT TO THE MARCO PIERRE WHITE STEAKHOUSE BAR & GRILL. asters of all things steak, burgers and other delicious dishes, the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill was definitely on the top of my list to go to – needless to say that I was very excited about this one. Located inside the DoubleTree by Hilton at Sheffield Park on Chesterfield Road South, it is in a great location for the surrounding areas of Dronfield, Beauchief and Meadowhead but also well worth the journey if you are further afield. When entering through the grand entrance, we were immediately greeted by lovely waitresses keen to make our evening all the more special. Georgia, our waitress, went above and beyond to make our experience at the steakhouse as wholesome as it could be - it was clear to see that this is a standard they hold proudly. After being seated, we were shown the extensive wine list but ended up opting for a Green Mountain IPA (a favourite according to the waitress) and a Jack Daniel’s and Coke. The atmosphere was chilled and intimate, it makes for the perfect environment for an evening meal. Seated in comfortable chairs, lamps on each table and relaxing music playing through out, the ambience has been well executed. For starters I ordered a Leek and Potato Soup which came with a side of freshly baked sourdough (£6.95) and my
M
102 www.sheffieldvibe.com
companion went for the Welsh Rarebit (£7.50). The soup was rich in flavour and acted as the perfect starter for the delicious meal to come. My companion described the Welsh Rarebit as having a great depth of flavour and arrived with a fresh, delicious salad to accompany. We were checked on throughout the evening but to the perfect level where you can completely relax and enjoy your meal and if there were any issues, they would be there to help. For our main courses we were almost stuck for choice by the variety of dishes they serve. I myself opted for the Signature Fillet Steak with Garlic Butter (£27.95) and my dining companion chose the Signature Fillet Steak with Garlic King Prawns (£29.95). It is worth noting that they have a range of options to suit you with The English House Chicken & Leek Pie (£15.50), Mr White’s Chicken Curry (16.50) and freshly ground beef burgers (£16.95). The steak arrived along with a side of chunky chips (£3.25) and an extra side of buttery garden peas (£3.25). My steak was cooked medium-rare and my companion’s medium, both cooked to absolute perfection. Clearly, both were well rested, tender and juicy. The steak sat on a slice of toasted sourdough bread, mine was also accompanied by woodland mushrooms, buttery leaf spinach and garlic butter and my companion’s arrived
with a béarnaise sauce. Every mouthful was better than the last and the standard was exceptional. For dessert, my companion originally ordered the seasonal fruits (£6.50) but, as the meal went on, he grew increasingly excited about the Traditional Bread & Butter Pudding with pouring cream (£6.50) and ordered that instead. As per usual I went for the Hot Chocolate Brownie with milk ice cream and chocolate sauce (£6.50) – a common choice of dessert for me. It was a scrumptious end to a delicious meal, both desserts were fairly light and can also be matched with a dessert wine if you desire. All in all, I couldn’t fault it. The standard of service, food and atmosphere was truly exceptional and I will definitely be back for more soon. CHEFS ROSS SAYLES AND LEE SHORTT ARE MAKING WAVES AT NONNAS, IN WHAT IS ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR. hough Lee Shortt has had worldwide catering experience even he was left dumbfounded at his meteoric rise to head chef of Nonnas as reported in last month’s Westside. We can confirm this was a mistake and we apologise! Lee has actually held the position of chef de partie for the past 12 months and the overall Nonnas kitchen is run very well by long-standing head chef Ross Sayles. Owner Maurizio Mori was quick to see the funny side. “We always like to look after our staff and encourage career progression but Lee’s promotion was way too quick even for us! We’d like to confirm Ross’s position is as firm as it has ever been – we couldn’t wish for a better head chef.” Nonnas is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary.

League of their own BEJU MAYBE THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK BUT IS ALREADY MAKING GREAT STRIDES, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. here was a time when I thought I had my finger very firmly on the pulse and knew everything you needed to know about what was happening in the city centre. Any new bar, club or restaurant opening and I was there with bells on so it says a lot about my age when a new restaurant and bar opens on Glossop Road and I’m none the wiser. My nighttime endeavours to this part of town - or any part of town for that matter - have become sporadic over the last few years to say the least. My visit to Beju, a new contemporary Asain eatery that opened in November last year, took me right back to my younger days - and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sited opposite the Sinclair building at the part of the city where West Street meets Glossop Road, it occupies a former bank building that was latterly a hair salon. Chef-owner Davud Aghajan has completely transformed the almost triangular interior which complements the modern Asian menu with illuminated maple trees, black marble tiles and a starlit ceiling. It’s very cool, very luxurious and the type of place your Instagram account will be all the better for visiting. And there’s plenty of substance to the style too. The menu is divided into small plates, large plates, ‘Enhance your Experience’ dishes, as well as desserts and there’ll be plenty you recognise and
T
104 www.sheffieldvibe.com
some that will be less familiar. Cocktails play a big part in the experience at Beju and our opening salvo didn’t disappoint - the Singapore Fling (£12), made with Tanqueray, chambord, triple sec, cherry and grenadine syrup, fresh lime juice, pineapple juice and soda, arrived in a tiki glass and was sweet and refreshing. My City of Stars (£11), a combination of Bacardi, mint, lime juice, strawberry and crystallised violets, had more than a hint of mojito about it and was given extra flavour - and showmanship - with a topping of cotton candy. Unsure where to begin - you’ll be spoilt for choice - we allowed Dav to select some dishes for us.We started with dynamite shrimps with sriracha aioli (£9), sticky beef short ribs (£13) and sake-marinated chicken karaage (£8). Next, we ‘enhanced our experience’ with huge butterfly tiger prawns (£15), which were absolutely delicious and perhaps my favourite dish of the night, as well as the black wagyu burger (£21). Wagyu beef features heavily on the menu at Beju, is sourced locally, and didn’t disappoint. The burger was served with caramelised onion, truffle mayo and emmental cheese and was literally melt-inthe-mouth.This was only bettered by the Japanese black wagyu 8oz sirloin (£68). Panfried sea bass, green tahini sauce
and pickled cucumber salsa (£26) and crispy miso chicken, sesame squash, green onion and chilli (£18) completed our large plates and were complemented with Shanghai noodles (£10), Tokyo fried rice (£6) and seasoned fries (£5). It was a feast fit for a king. There was some real stand-out dishes (I’m still thinking about the wagyu steak) but overall the cooking was consistent, wellseasoned and presented beautifully, we couldn’t fault a thing. Beju brings something different to the city and does it with style. There’s lots more to come in the next few months too with seasonal menus and the addition of an upstairs VIP room. It certainly made me feel like I was part of the ‘in-crowd, if only for a couple of hours. Beju 207-212 Glossop Road Sheffield, S10 2GW Tel: 0114 296 0246 beju.co.uk Instagram: beju_sheffield

The new covered outdoor area
Enjoy the ride AMICI AND BICI OFFERS A WELCOME WINDOW ON THE WORLD, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ith its close proximity to the Peak District, Sheffield has long had a love affair with cycling which only grew after the Tour de France peloton passed through the city in 2014.You can find reminders of this most memorable time adorning the walls of Amici and Bici on Abbeydale Road, which celebrates the best of food, coffee and, of course, all things two-wheeled. When it opened in 2013 it was one of the few decent places to refuel on a ride out of the city but this area has completely transformed over recent years and now offers a wealth of food and drink options. Amici and Bici sits on the corner with Chippinghouse Road and if you’ve walked, driven, or indeed ridden past recently you can’t help but have noticed the new heated and covered outdoor area which stretches down the length of the cafe and extends into the rear too. It makes for an impressive space and should really come into its own as the weather improves. Window boxes filled with plants and flowers add a touch of colour. With the temperature gauge just a few degrees above freezing on the day of our visit, we took a table inside for lunch. Despite the additions outside the cafe is still a light and airy space and we took a
W

table in front of one of the picture windows, perfect for watching the world go by. The decor is cycle-themed and includes everything from that aforementioned Tour de France memorabilia to striking wall murals and Chris Froome-signed Giro D’Italia jerseys. It’s colourful, contemporary and busy, which makes for a pleasant atmosphere. Much of the food at Amici and Bici is Italian-themed (the clue is in the name) and the breakfast and lunch menu is extensive. It includes everything from all day breakfast dishes to jacket potatoes, sandwiches, panini and salads as well as more substantial meals such as burgers, pizza, calzone, crespelle (pancakes), risotto and pasta. There’s chef ’s specials steak, chicken or sea bass – and a blackboard listing daily specials too. It was hard to know where to start so we ordered drinks - orange San Pellegrino (£2.80) for me, an English Breakfast tea (£2.60) for my wife whilst we deliberated. My wife opted for a ‘Parma’ panini (£8.50) which was filled with prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato and rocket and served with chips and a side salad, whilst I opted for a Capricciosa pizza (£10.95) and rucola e parmigiano salad (£4.95).
Having arrived with the melting cheese oozing temptingly out of the sides, the panini tasted as good as it looked; prosciutto and mozzarella is a winning combination and this as good an example as any. The chips were lovely and crisp too. My pizza was well cooked, topped with ham, salami and mushrooms and worked well with the rocket and parmesan salad. Dessert became a bit of a stretch so we shared a slice of incredibly moist orange chocolate cake whilst a flat white coffee (£2.90) rounded things off nicely. It’s worth noting that service was exemplary throughout, we were made to feel extremely welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our lunchtime treat. In an increasingly competitive part of town, Amici and Bici is still leading the pack. Amici and Bici 220 Abbeydale Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield, S7 1FL Tel: 0114 438 2776 Facebook - amiciandbici

PROMOTION
The Very Reverend Abi Thompson
Spring is in the air THE NEW DEAN OF SHEFFIELD WILL BE LEADING A NUMBER OF EVENTS AND SERVICES AT THE CATHEDRAL IN THE COMING MONTHS. pring has brought many changes at Sheffield Cathedral and there’s lots to look forward to in the coming months. Perhaps the biggest change has been the appointment of The Very Reverend Abi Thompson as the new Dean of Sheffield; she becomes one of only seven female deans out of a possible 42 in the country. Abi joined Sheffield Cathedral after three and a half years in St Albans, a move she described as a 'homecoming' her husband is from Heeley so she already had a really strong connection with the city. "It's such a fantastic place," she said. "The people are real and honest, which I love, and the Cathedral is so wellplaced - I can't believe it has its own tram stop!" The new dean sees lots of potential in her new post and during her tenure will be looking to increase the Cathedral's musical offering, engage with young people more and to develop the work to support The Archer Project. “We’ve got an amazing forecourt, I’d love to do something like a folk festival,” said Abi. “I’d love to build relationships with the two local

universities as we’re now getting lots of students attending our services, particularly those from overseas. Sheffield is such a diverse city and, as A Place for All People, we need to reflect that.” One of Abi’s first major events that she will be overseeing is the National Day of Reflection on 23 March. Working with end-of-life charity Marie Curie and organisations throughout South Yorkshire, Sheffield Cathedral will be inviting people to celebrate the lives of the people who have died during the last two years on the pandemic and to support the millions of people who are grieving, whether from Covid or any other cause. There will be a memorial evening prayer service at 5pm and you will also be able to add your memories and
prayers to a Wall of Reflection or leave a message in a memorial book, which will remain open in the Cathedral until 30 October when a public memorial service will take place. Coming up in April is Easter; Holy Week begins on 10 April and marks the last week of Lent. Easter is the season in which Christians remember the death and resurrection of Jesus and is considered the most important festival in the Christian year. Sheffield Cathedral will be hosting a Maundy Thursday Eucharist, Liturgy of Good Friday, an Easter vigil and Festival of Light on the Saturday and then an Easter Day Eucharist to conclude the festival. “Easter is all about light and coming out the darkness, which is quite apt at this time, particularly with everything that’s going on in the world,” said Abi. “It’s my first Easter here and I can’t wait to meet so many wonderful Sheffield people, please do come and join us.” To find out more about events and upcoming services, visit www.sheffieldcathedral.org Sheffield Cathedral Church Street, Sheffield, S1 1HA Tel: 0114 275 3434

New vision There’s a radical evolution is taking place at Alfa Romeo, epitomised by the the new Tonale. The Alfa Romeo Tonale offers a distinctive, sensual and forward-looking design, extolling new stylistic canons destined to remain as points of reference in the development of the future Alfa Romeo line-up: five-hole alloy wheels, the cluster in the ‘telescopic’ instrument panel, the three-spoke sports steering wheel, and the sine-curve headlights. Its compact dimensions – length 4.53m, width 1.84m and height 1.6m – encompass the uniqueness of Italian design and the original, contemporary style typical of Alfa Romeo. The interior design of the Tonale draws inspiration from the racing heritage of Alfa Romeo; everything is driver-centric, even though the interior is also designed for the comfort of passengers. The characteristic elements of the new model include the telescopic instrument panel, with its clear Alfa Romeo stylistic matrix, and the compact steering wheel which ensures a precise and direct steering feel. The wheel is also embellished by the exclusive aluminium shift paddles. It will be available with a range of two hybrid engines.
