The summer months are the perfect time to tackle home and garden jobs, inside and out. And if you need some help, we can point you in the right direction.
pring and autumn might be traditionally the best times to get your house and garden in order - think spring clean and getting ready for winter - but there are lots of jobs you can do in the summer too.
Warmer weather means it is the perfect time to to make sure your home is summerready for maximum relaxation and hosting friends and family.
Summer clean
Cleaning should be your number one priority, especially windows and doors where grime will have built up during the colder and wetter months. If you don’t have
a window cleaner, grab a bucket, sponge and squeegee and get started. If you’re working at higher levels make sure you have someone working with you to support any ladders you may be using.
all working well, and use a damp cloth to remove any excess grime built up during the winter period. Give all your windows and French doors a good clean using a glass cleaning product and squeegee so every time you look out from your home to the (hopefully) sunshine outside, your view is crystal clear.
If you have a driveway or patio area, summer is also a great time to give these a good clean and get rid of any weeds they may have sprouted. Ideally, a powerful jet wash is the best option as it will get rid of any ingrained dirt. After you’ve done this,

By now any external walls, fencing and
and are probably looking the worse for wear. Remember to clean your walls and gates with a hard or wire brushe to remove any loose dirt and old paint. You should then wash with a mild detergent, before leaving to dry and then apply the paint.
Tidy up your garden
You’ll see it as soon as the weather starts to pick up, everyone heading outside to mow their lawns and generally tidy up their gardens. That often means weeding, cleaning, landscaping and trimming any hedges or bushes.
Ensure your BBQ, if you have one, isn’t too close to any fencing or greenery, and keep your garden space protected from food and drink spills or add extra underfoot comfort by laying garden rugs or mats which are easy to clean and can be rolled up and stored away when summer comes to a close.
Don’t forget the inside
Just because it’s summer it doesn’t mean that any improvements for the home and
The warmer, drier weather means that it’s also the perfect time to do any painting inside, be it walls or woodwork. The ability to have all the windows open mean any paint will dry much quicker and there will be less fumes around the home.
Flora and fauna
With your windows thrown open, it’s time to make your home feel summery inside too with some indoor plants. Keep plants in your kitchen, your living room, bedrooms and indeed your bathroom – real or fake – and when the extended daylight and full of leafy summer vibes.
Keep cool indoors
Keeping your home cool during the summer months, after months of trying to keep warm during the winter, is very important to make sure all members of the household – including any children and pets - enjoy the summer period.
For dog owners, kitchen spaces are a safe
haven for furry friends during the warmer months. The cool tiles under their bellies can help regulate their body temperature, which can be enhanced further by purchasing cool mats. Keeping their bowls full with cool tap water all day will also
ensure they stay relaxed.
Bedrooms can be kept cool by keeping windows closed and blinds and/or curtains drawn down during the warmest periods of the day, making for a more comfortable sleep on those arm summer nights.

Designer SHOWCASE
The Bridal Box Boutique held a special event to welcome Kay Heeley dresses to their collections.
The Bridal Box Boutique held a special event on 21 June, welcoming local designer Kay Heeley to the Stocksbridge store. Kay, who is based in Penistone, showcased her full bridal collection.
The event was hosted by special guest Alex Murphy-Klein, two-time Dancing on Ice champion, who had her wedding dress designed by Kay and was featured in Hello magazine. That same dress can be found in the collection at The Bridal Box Boutique.
Guests to the event were given drinks on arrival and a goodie bag to commemorate the collaboration. A catwalk took place to showcase all of Kay’s beautiful gowns followed by music and dancing – provided by Stephanie Hirst, of Capital FM fame –also giving brides-to-be an opportunity to chat to Kay and owner Claire Parish about this beautiful collection.
Claire is working closely with Kay to
bring a bespoke service so all dress alterations will be done by her and her team based in Penistone and design changes can also be made to the dresses, working alongside Kay to bring bridal visions to life. Going forward, the full collection is available to see at The Bridal Box Boutique and appointments can be made via the website to see these and the other dresses they have available in store.
“I would like to thank everyone who came along to the event and made it a success,” said Claire. “More, similar events will be taking place later in the year so keep an eye on our socials for more information.”

Dual IDENTITY
Solicitor, DJ, mum... where does Kavita
t’s never too late for change. Just ask Kavita Varu who, at the age of 50, decided to completely turn her life around and become a professional DJ –all whilst maintaining a career as a solicitor and being a single parent to two children.
The metamorphosis came in what was was recently divorced after a long marriage, the world had just gone into lockdown as a result of the Covid pandemic and all her plans for a garden party for her birthday were in ruins.
“The divorce basically ruined me, everything,” she recalled. “It was a horrible phase to go through and then I was cut off from my family who were a massive support to me.”
As an essential worker, Kavita continued to work through the initial lockdown all whilst managing a home, children, homeschooling and everything else the pandemic threw at her. She’d invited 100 people to a 50th birthday celebration in April, booked a DJ, organised a marquee and food, all of which had to be cancelled.
Disappointed but undeterred, Kavita decided to host a virtual party and having bought some small mini decks online, set up a live stream on Facebook for friends
“I went live at 8pm and played some Ibiza classics,” Kavita beamed. “My family had tuned in but then the audience started growing. It went from 12 people to 20, to 50, to 100 and then it went viral. At the end everyone was so happy and they asked if I would do it again the following week. I thought why not.”
That was the start of Kavita’s ‘Funky Fridays’ which she carried on for two years, turning her house into a disco in the process.
But the decision to take this new experience out of her comfort zone and to new audiences came after what she describes as a ‘game-changing’ visit to the island of Ibiza. Mentally and physically exhausted after lockdown, Kavita persuaded her parents to look after her children and bought a one-way ticket to the white isle.
“It was on my bucket list of things to do when I was 50,” said Kavita. “I stayed at Ibiza Rocks, on my own, and there was only about 50 people there. I watched the sunset outside Café Mambo on my own and then hired a car and travelled the island.”
It was on these travels that Kavita started talking to different people in different places, building up a network of contacts and then returned later that year to play some gigs. She worked with the likes of
Paradiso Art Hotel and the Zoo Project, warming up for the likes of Alfredo and Paco Fernandez, both Balearic legends.
At home, Kavita continued her networking and formed a strong bond with
created by DJ Martin Wright, the resident DJ at city clubs Pulse and Kingdom from 1997 to 2006. Martin had also been streaming live during lockdown – regularly attracting 5,000 visitors – and was asked
took place in August 2021 at The Leadmill where Kavita played in front of 1,000 people.
“Obviously in lockdown I was just looking at a laptop screen so going out and playing live was a totally different experience, which I completely enjoyed,” said Kavita. “You always get apprehensive
Reunion opened more doors for Kavita, including regular gigs with the Dayfever
one particular gig that has been the highlight of her career so far.
“I was part of a massive line-up for Pete Tong at Scarborough Open Air Theatre in August 2023,” added Kavita. “It was in front of 8,000 people – not bad for my third
year of DJing! Sometimes I have to pinch myself. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me and given me opportunities.”
Kavita’s transformation is perhaps all the more surprising given that she grew up in quite a traditional Indian household where the only music she heard was of the Indian classical variety. Her father was an Indian classically-trained musician and Kavita followed in his footsteps performing hymns, prayers and religious songs at home and at temple.
Attending university in Nottingham introduced Kavita to more western music –“it was the nineties, the rave scene, house music was in, this is when I came across some of the best dance tracks. Since her divorce, Kavita became reacquainted with these much-loved tunes.
Kavita has faced a fair amount of challenges in the industry but feels she’s all the better for it, even saying that it’s driven her ambition to succeed.
“I’ve had a lot of aversion against me, I think that’s how it is,” she said. “they said you’ve not done the mileage, you too old, thrown at me. But thank you, that’s fuelled my progression.”
Kavita’s career change has not gone unnoticed and she’s been invited to speak at a number of corporate events.
“People were fascinated that I was able profession at the age of 50,” commented Kavita. “I think they found my story inspirational and moving and it gave everyone a chance to think it’s never too late.”
This summer she’s got more dates with Clubbers Reunion and will be heading to Ibiza once again as well as Amsterdam. And amongst all that she still works as a commercial contracts law solicitor for the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in the week, looks after her two children –although they’re now 19 and 22 – and still
“I don’t watch television, that’s gone, but I’m quite a sporty, healthy-living person,” Kavita laughed. “I love running, swimming, yoga, squash, cycling when I I never let that slip because that keeps me in check.”
Kavita clearly revels in being a busy woman but is loving this new dual-identity.

The nominations for the 2024 Westside Restaurant &
fter three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.
This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners,
balls, conferences, live events and more. It
well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted
of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.
Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Welcome RETURN
After a torrid eight months, The George is back - and in some style, writes Richard Abbey.
t’s good to be back.
IAnd not just to be visiting The George in Hathersage but to see the venue back open after what has been a torrid eight months.
The George, which was acquired by Rob Hattersley of Longbow Venues in June 2021, was one of many places in the Derbyshire area that suffered at the hands of Storm Babet in October 2023 and such was the damage caused, that Rob had no choice but to close the venue for an extended period of time to put everything right. Thankfully it’s back – and looking better than ever.
Entering the 500-year-old building, which was frequented by Charlotte Bronte, The George appears to be very much ‘as you were’ but there have been subtle changes that have brightened the place up, colours to different coloured fabrics and furniture. It’s the same but different, if that makes sense.
The George retains a familiar feel which is matched by a friendly and inviting
welcome. As you enter through the main doors, the bar is to the left, the lounge to the left and the restaurant straight ahead which in turn leads onto a garden terrace. An old conference room has also been repurposed and can now be used as a meeting space as well as a private or extra dining room.
The venue has reopened with a brand new summer menu with lots of tasty treats perfect for a sunny day. Crispy aubergines, butter beans purée, rocket salad, marinated heritage tomatoes and pomegranate salsa

Drinks came in the form of a French Summer cocktail (£9.95) – Grey Goose Essences white peach and rosemary, St. Germain, Italian sparkling wine, soda – and a glass of Il Tempo Passa Pinot Grigio Rose (£8.75 250ml).

The George is very much back in the groove.

Consistently GOOD
Absence clearly makes the heart - and the stomach - grow fonder, writes Richard Abbey.
t’s been a few years since I visited Butler’s Balti House on Broad Lane and I was surprised by how much the area, which lies just on the fringes of the city centre, has changed. High-rise apartment blocks now dominate the skyline and there’s plenty of work still ongoing.
IBut one constant throughout all this change is Butler’s, which specialises in Indian and Kashmiri cuisine.
Butler’s retains a long-held reputation for on the food and rarely does it disappoint. During the evening of our visit, I managed to overhear a conversation that a gentleman was having with the staff at the restaurant.
had googled the best place to go for a curry which led him to Butler’s. He said he was very glad he came and was commending the staff for the fantastic food he had eaten. There’s no better review than that.
After entering the restaurant into the stylish bar area, we were shown to a table in the large canteen-style dining room and allowed the staff to talk us through the extensive menu. As the name suggests, Butler’s specialise in Balti dishes which
are served in cast iron pots to enhance the
pan is freshly cooked and aromatically spiced curries. Balti food is very aromatic but not excessively spiced with chillies. Traditionally it is eaten without rice or cutlery. Balti bread is often used to scoop up the food instead.
After starting with obligatory poppadoms (£1) and a pickle tray (£3.50), we allowed Butler’s staff to steer us with our menu choices. To start, it was recommended that we try the Tandoori lamb chops (£9) and Kaleeji (£6.50) - chicken livers with chilli and lime. They didn’t disappoint.
Both arrived at our table on sizzling platters and were served on a bed of sliced onions. The lamb was cooked perfectly, slightly pink inside, and had that lovely smoky, chargrilled taste with a hint of spice. The chicken livers was a new dish for me but very tasty with plenty of heat and a smooth texture.
Whilst Balti dishes are a speciality at Butler’s we were persuaded to ‘handi’ dishes - lamb (£13) for me, chicken (£12) for my wife - which are traditional desiapna Kashmiri-style curries. Like all main
meals at the restaurant these were served in the cast iron dishes to which you can add your rice and accompaniments. We chose some keema rice (£4.50) to soak up some of the sauce and mopped things up with a plain naan (£3), although I did have to rely on cutlery to make sure I got every bit. Both curries were very good, fragrant with
We particularly liked the smoky rice too. Despite enjoying the spicy lamb chops, my son prefers a sweeter-style curry so opted for a ‘golden oldie’, a chicken korma (£12), which he paired with a cheese naan (£4).
Portion-sizes at Butler’s are generous
but good news - you can take any leftovers home with you.
The question is, will it taste just as good the day after.

What is a power of attorney and how are they changing?
By Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team.
Powers of attorney are extremely important – and they are not only for the elderly. Everybody should be considering one. They enable you (the donor) to give someone else (the attorney) the legal right to deal with your affairs should you not be able to.
Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) came into force on the 1 October 2007 and replaced the enduring power of attorney (EPA) from that date, although EPAs already set up remain valid.
It is often thought that powers of attorney are only meant to help if you lose mental capacity, but that is not true. Whilst they are a vital part of long-term care planning, they can also help if you need decisions made on a temporary basis, if you go into hospital for example. No one has the automatic right to manage your affairs for any amount of time – even your spouse. If you don’t have a power of attorney set up and you need decisions making on your behalf, someone must apply to the Court of Protection for a deputyship order – which can take time and be costly.
There are two types of LPA – a property and affairs LPA, which allows an attorney
personal welfare LPA, which allows an attorney to deal with health and welfare matters, such as where you live, when you should go to a doctor or who you should have contact with. Both types of LPA
Public Guardian before they can be used. A property and affairs LPA can be used at any time, but a health and welfare LPA can only be used when you (the donor) have lost capacity.
You must be able to trust your attorney of course, so it is vital that you choose carefully. Most people choose a trusted family member or friend, along with
a professional such as a solicitor or accountant.
the digital process.
LPAs provide incredible security for their users, but there have been calls for their appointment and management to be reformed and an update is now taking place with the Lasting Powers of Attorney Act 2023, which received royal assent in September 2023.
In the main, the act focusses on modernising and simplifying LPA registration and providing safeguards to prevent fraud and abuse.
A new online system is being developed and it is expected that this digitalisation will speed up registration time by picking up errors earlier and allowing them to be
documents to be posted back and forth between the applicant and the OPG as currently happens. Signatures will be done online by everyone involved. All in all, it is expected that registration time will be reduced to two weeks.
Additional safeguards are being developed, such as online ID checking. Anyone involved in the process will be
to register the LPA.
The new system, when activated, will allow only the donor to register an LPA with the OPG before it can be used, whereas, at present, either the donor or the attorney can register it.
An improved paper process is being developed for those who are unable to use the internet or those who choose not to use
Finally, the group of people who can object to an LPA will be expanded to include more people who have an interest in it – including third parties who are not named in the LPA.
Laura Cowan, head of Graysons private client department says: “Powers of attorney can be very emotive for donors, especially for those with historic family tensions. However, they can be a particularly vital way of ensuring your future safety and security in these cases. Putting a power of attorney in place – and making a will – is the best way of ensuring that you get the people you trust to look after your affairs if
when you die. Until the Powers of Attorney Act is in force and the new systems are in place, you can be sure that we will continue to offer the best professional power of attorney service possible.”
