Local Area Committees give you the chance to raise your views, share your opinion on what the council does in your area and contribute to making changes in your neighbourhood. The South West LAC covers the 4 electoral wards of Crookes & Crosspool, Dore & Totley, Ecclesall, and Fulwood. As a resident of South West Sheffield, this is your opportunity to say what you would like to see improved. The first public South West Local Area Committee meeting was held on Thursday 16th September 2021 with Cllr Andrew Sangar, Chair of the South West LAC facilitating a host of questions and debates. Denise Devoto, LAC Manager for the South West explained how the LAC is actively listening to feedback to inform the community plan. Topics discussed included neighbourhood plans, communication about LACs to the public, decision making and scrutiny, funding for community groups, highways issues, education, anti-social behaviour and environmental concerns. The South West LAC aims to hold four public meetings per year, hosted in each ward – these meetings are just one way that residents can take part in the conversation. Following meetings and consultations during 2021, the LAC team are putting together a community plan. At the January meeting we will discuss progress in developing the new LAC community plan, giving residents the opportunity to have your say before it is finalised:
Thursday 20th January, 7-9pm Tapton Hall, Shore Lane, S10 3BU You can contact the team or book your place at our January meeting via email or phone: Email: SouthwestLAC@sheffield.gov.uk Telephone: 0114 474 3651 Our meeting venues are accessible to all. If you have any specific requirements, please make staff aware at the time of booking. Please note, there will be opportunities to have your say about the plan online. The LAC meeting is just one way you can get involved. If you can’t make this meeting, please submit a question, or raise your views by email or phone: Email: SouthwestLAC@sheffield.gov.uk Telephone: 0114 474 3651 We are working within Sheffield City Council’s covid guidelines for the health and safety of residents and staff. Worth waiting for AFTER BEING FORCED TO POSTPONE LAST YEAR’S CEREMONY, THE WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE BAR & RESTAURANT AWARDS RETURNED WITH A BANG, AS OUR REGION’S FINEST CULINARY STARS DECENDED ON THE OEC FOR A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION. t feels like it’s been a long time coming. After last year’s enforced postponement of the Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, we returned this year – and there was plenty to celebrate. Moving from its traditional summer slot to the autumn, this 26th incumbent of our annual awards, held for the first time at Owlerton Events and Conferencing (OEC), didn’t disappoint as over 200 guests packed out the venue and entered into the spirit of the occasion. The OEC opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for unto 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the

evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch. The kitchen served a wonderful four-course meal which consisted of pan fried seabass, sweetcorn and chicken veloute, roasted saddle of lamb and an assiette of desserts. When it came to the 2021 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, but we were delighted at how many local
restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities, especially after their most difficult 18 months on record. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region. There were 12 awards in total and on the following pages we’ll give you the lowdown on all the winners. But of course, the entire occasion was geared towards the unveiling of the big winners of our premium award - the Westside Restaurant of the Year for 2021. This year the top prize went to The Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow, a stunning location on the edge of the Chatsworth estate. The 3 AA rosette restaurant, superbly overseen by head chef Adam Harper, wowed our judges with the finesse of its food, flawless service and classic ambience. It’s

We had a flurry of entries and after a close call Hathersage, which picked up Best Contemporary Restaurant, and Brocco between The Maynard, The George on the Park, which was voted Best Hotel Hathersage and Bank House Hathersage, it was the Grindleford venue that Restaurant. Judging by the huge round of applause scooped the prize, winning by a narrow that greeted the announcement - made margin of just 37 votes. Managing director John Murphy presented The Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow with their Restaurant of the Year award. Once the awards had been dished out and the plates had been cleared, it was time to hit the dancefloor with DJ Shaun Leigh. And for some hardened party animals, the after-party continued into the small hours at Napoleons Casino, situated next door to the OEC. Westside Restaurant of the Year 2021
The Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow e’re so lucky to have the blissfully luxurious Cavendish Hotel at Baslow, located in one of the Peak District’s most picturesque villages, on our doorstep. Their 28 stylish bedrooms, with views over the Chatsworth Estate, might be the ideal place to unwind but if you’d rather indulge, the 3 AA Rosette Gallery restaurant takes some beating – and made it the number one choice for our overall restaurant of the year. From the moment you arrive, you’re made to feel truly special. You’ll experience crisp linen, polished silver and flawless service all complemented by a menu that showcases the very best local produce and innovative cooking, courtesy of head chef Adam Harper. Adam joined The Cavendish in October 2018 after previously gaining Michelin Star experience with Simon Rogan at The French and at Fischer’s at Baslow Hall. If your budget allows, we’d recommend going for his tasting menu, which truly gives you the full Cavendish experience. Hotel manager Steve Daly collected the award from our managing director John Murphy and compere Shaun Doane. “We’re absolutely elated!” he beams. “It’s quite levelling really. We have put a lot of work in to get to where we are,
W

we’re constantly improving, and it’s so nice to be recognised in this way.” Steve joined the hotel five years ago and has seen big changes in that time. “It’s been quite a journey, going from one to two and then three AA rosettes for the restaurant in 2020,” he adds. “On top of that, the hotel now has 5 AA Red Star status.” So what does he put their success down to? “The hotel has obvious appeal, being on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate, it’s one of the Duke and Duchess’s properties, but what we’ve done is bring warmth, character and sincerity to the building to make it more inclusive,” he says. “Adam can take a lot of credit for this award - and deservedly so - but our success doesn’t just come from one person but the whole team. There are 40-odd souls who work here and they all contribute in making the guest journey so special. “They’re an amazing team - I’ve never worked with one like it in my 18 years in the industry. They go above and beyond to make The Cavendish the most welcoming place it can be.”

WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS 2021
Readers’ Choice Award The Maynard Our Readers’ Choice Award is one of our most coveted and gives you the chance to have your say on who the winner should be. Conducted via an online poll, our readers have been sending in entries in there hundreds over the last few weeks and it was unbelievable to find that the top three was separated by just 37 votes. The Maynard, owned by Longbow Bars and Restaurants, beat its sister property, The George Hathersage, into second place with Bank House finishing third. “Apart from the main one, this is the one to win,” said Rob Hattersley. “It’s people who have been in the restaurant, enjoyed the experience and then voted for us, which means a lot.” The Maynard had only just re-opened its doors after a major refurb before last year’s first lockdown hit but they’ve soon hit their stride with fine food and wine, including fantastic Sunday lunches. “We like to awaken sleeping giants,” added Rob. “You’ve
Best Newcomer Dunston Hall Bistro & Garden Centre “Wow” was all David Harrison could say after winning Best Newcomer. The genial chap, who owns the hall, bistro and garden centre with his wife Lynsey, was clearly blown away by their success. The charming bistro has a breakfast, lunchtime and evening menu, offering something for everyone. Service comes with a smile with the food presented beautifully, all in relaxing surroundings. “We chose one of the worse times to open,” he said. “We’re not a famous restaurant but pride ourselves on good quality food and service. This means the world to us. All I can add is, onwards and upwards.”
seen that with The Maynard and more recently with The George. Hopefully this award shows we’re doing something right.” In what seemed to be a running theme throughout the night, Rob was also quick to praise the staff at The Maynard. “We’re inspired by them,” he beamed. “Without them we’d be nothing.”
Best Contemporary Bank House If there was an award for noisiest tables, Bank House would definitely be up there but they had plenty of cause for celebration after taking home the award they won in 2019. “I’m over the moon but have to reserve the biggest praise for our team,” said Lawrence Key. “We’ve been really lucky with staff and they’ve all worked so hard to get us through the most challenging of times. We’re a family at the end of the day. “Hathersage is becoming a real destination with lots of local businesses supporting each other which is so great to see.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 27

Best Dining Pub The Peacock Cutthorpe Stunning views of the Derbyshire countryside, an excellent selection of beers, wines and spirits, and top-class modern British cuisine, has attracted a loyal following both locally and further afield. This the is the fourth time the Peacock have walked away with an award; last time around (in 2019) they were voted ‘Best Family Favourite’ but now retain ‘Best Dining Pub’ after winning the same award in 2018. “It’s amazing to win,” said Charlotte Marsden. “It’s been such hard work but our staff have been absolutely fantastic. We’re now busier than ever which is great to see.”
Best Hotel Restaurant Brocco on the Park If a pandemic wasn’t enough to contend with, Brocco has undergone a change of ownership this year and has seen head chef Leslie Buddington leave for pastures new. Not that you would be able to tell. The venue is as lovely as ever with the food, service and atmosphere hitting those same high standards. “I’d like to say a big thank you to Gary, Ash, Zoe and Stevie,” said Nicola Walton, who has worked at Brocco for six years. “Without them we wouldn’t be here and certainly not collecting this award. “We’ve resisted the temptation to change everything and tried to keep on the same track.” 28 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Best Afternoon Tea Darcy’s Brasserie at Mosborough Hall Hotel Afternoon tea can be something of a treat and there’s no better place to indulge than at Mosborough Hall Hotel, which sits on the Derbyshire border in the south-east of the city. We loved the blend of old and new and their afternoon teas, served Monday to Sunday, offer real value for money. Head chef Alex Fretwell has been revamping the whole menu throughout the hotel since re-opening in the summer and has taken his afternoon teas to the next level. “First of all, it’s just great to be nominated, never mind winning,” he said as he celebrated with his team. “It’s great to be out and [the OEC] is such a great venue, we’re glad to be here.”
Best Cafe/Light Bite The Barn at Whirlow Hall Farm When the team at Whirlow Hall Farm decided to expand and update their cafe, little did their know the instant impact it would have. Appointing Masterchef: The Professionals semifinalist Luke Rhodes as head chef has proved an inspired decision and we were just blown away by his food when we stopped by for lunch. And that’s just he beginning. Bistro nights and Sunday lunches have been added to the roster and there are more events planned for next year. “”It’s unbelievable,” said Luke. “It makes all those early mornings worthwhile and hopefully this [award] is just the first of many.” “We thought we’d be able to build up slowly but it’s really busy from the off,” added Kelvin Charles.

WESTSIDE & SOUTHSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS 2021
Best Indian Prithi Raj Everyone loves a good curry and Sheffield has some fine independent restaurants to choose from. Some of them are so good in fact it’s hard to choose between them but Prithi Raj has come out on top for the second time running. “We offer more than just food,” said Ibby Ali, who works front of house at the Ecclesall Road restaurant. “We treat our customers like family and have even brought some of the along this evening to celebrate with us. We sponsor the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and have had recent exposure on BBC Breakfast thanks to Dan Walker and Nadia Bychkova who visited recently.” Trust us, the food is exceptional too.
Best Italian Nonnas The Ecclesall Road restaurant is something of a Sheffield institution - and with good reason.Their authentic dishes are a big hit with customers who just love that taste of the ‘old country’.There’s rarely a dull moment at Nonnas, which remains open seven days a week from 8am in the morning to midnight. “We’ve had staffing problems like everyone else in the industry,” said head chef Ross Sayles. “But everyone has chipped in and we feel like we’re almost back to what we consider normal.” Sara Habte, who works front of house and collected the award with Ross, added: “We’re delighted with the award after what has been a really challenging year.”
Best Oriental Chinatown It’s only been open for two years but Martin Ng’s Chinatown restaurant has quickly established itself as a top destination for quality authentic Chinese food. Three menus - daytime dim sum and evening ‘English’ and Chinese menus - leave no stone unturned. Our reviewer particularly loved the scallops, served with glass noodles in their shell, so much that he returned for a second helping shortly after. Chinatown is a big restaurant popular with families, but despite its size, and the fact that it is often completely full, service never faltered. “Like many restaurants we have had to change and adapt but we’re truly honoured to win this award,” said Martin.
Best Night Out The Wildcard Bar & Grill After a stop-start beginning, punctuated by a lengthy winter lockdown, The Wildcard felt like they were starting from scratch when they were allowed to reopen in May.You wouldn’t have guessed, though, as it feels like the Bar and Grill has always been there. It’s proved to be a big hit with everyone, whether you’re out with family, friends or in a big group. And the fact that it’s a sports bar is just a bonus. “We’ve found that we’re not having to rely too much on the sporting calendar,” said Jack Carter. “We seem to have got the formula between bar and food just right and it’s been more than enough for our customers. We didn’t expect this award but are thrilled.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 29

EATING OUT
Exceptional evening THE GALLERY RESTAURANT AT THE CAVENDISH HOTEL BASLOW IS AN EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. he Laurent-Perrier Champagne and Seafood Terrace at Cavendish Hotel Baslow was THE place to be seen this summer. When restrictions eased, hordes of hungry customers flocked to the lush lawns of the hotel for fabulous seafood, bubbles and unrivalled views over the Chatsworth estate. Getting a table was nigh on impossible. Moving into autumn and then winter, the hotel, which comes under the Devonshire Hotels umbrella, is a completely different prospect. With the terrace closed, the emphasis turns back inside to high quality fine dining set against a backdrop of warmth, cosiness and comfort. And getting a table is still difficult. The Cavendish Hotel Baslow offers two dining options; The Garden Room is a more informal affair but if you really want to go all out, and experience the best the hotel has to offer, a visit to The Gallery Restaurant is a must. The restaurant has three AA rosettes and is a classy affair. Think starched white tablecloths, highly-polished silverware and flawless service all complemented by food of the highest order. A la carte and tasting menus are both available in the evenings and it’s the latter that really showcases head chef
T

Adam Harper’s skills in the kitchen. The Gallery prides itself on taking many of its ingredients from the Chatsworth estate and these were brought to the fore in this eight-course feast (£79.50 per person). After starting with a selection of chefs snacks – grissini, caramelised pecan nuts and spiced corn – we were brought an amuse bouche of a pea and ham hock velouté which was silky smooth and filled with flavours of the season. Warm chunks of sesame seed focaccia bread followed, served with garlic butter, before a starter of mackerel, fennel and orange arrived at our table. This was light, delicate and the perfect way to start our meal in earnest. Chatsworth venison tartare followed, on this occasion served with coal, sunflower, blackberry, parmesan and pickles, before we moved onto our dish. The hake, accompanied by artichokes, golden raisins, shimiji, leeks and a roast fish sauce, was my stand-out dish of the evening. A perfect balance of flavours, it was just delicious. Rare breed pork – belly and tenderloin – had autumnal flavours in abundance with the sharpness of pickled pear and spring onions offset by a vanilla and turnip puree and hazelnuts. A pre-dessert named ‘Blackberry
Garden’ was one of the most intriguing dishes of the evening and was made with fennel, yuzu, white chocolate and a cucumber and mint sorbet. All the flavours worked in harmony with the sorbet acting as a real palate cleanser. We finished with a cherry souffle, served with sheep’s yoghurt and mascarpone ice cream and chocolate sauce before taking up the offer of coffee and petit fours. Dinner at The Gallery Restaurant is a real experience, my wife and I felt truly spoilt. The service was faultless throughout and the food simply exceptional. Portion sizes for the tasting menu were just right and everything was presented beautifully. Hats off to Adam and his team. Christmas past, present and future WHAT’S HAPPENING AT SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL THIS FESTIVE SEASON? will honour Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.” So said Charles Dickens the author whose name is so associated with a traditional Christmas. Each of us will have memories of Christmas from childhood and also certain traditions carried from year to year. I have a Christmas tree ornament given to me as a young child by a much-loved Auntie, which must go on the tree each year. Sheffield Cathedral is no stranger to long held traditions of Christmas. Despite the huge disruptions of the Covid crisis we have attempted to maintain many of the much-loved events and services. Many
“ I
people look forward to the amazing Sheffield Steel Nativity being seen in the main body of the Cathedral. They come with children and grandchildren to see the nativity scene as part of their Christmas. The ‘Carols Galore’ event, which takes place on Saturday 11 December, 11am and 1pm, is for Christmas shoppers and has become an enduring tradition in the week before Christmas. Over that past few years we have added to our traditions with the Christmas light show, and Christmas Tree Festival. They too are becoming a much-loved part of our festive events. It’s amazing to realise that for many hundreds of years people have gathered in this place to celebrate God’s amazing gift of the Christ child. We have survived plagues, social change and wars. The Cathedral has changed much over the
Sheffield Steel Nativity
years but at its heart it maintains the living tradition of being A Place for All People. We hope you will come and visit us at one of our Carol Services and events and make it part of your Christmas tradition. I wish you all a joyous and peaceful Christmas. PROMOTION
Slight advantage PA JEWELLERY TALKS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS OF LAB GROWN DIAMONDS. n the next of our series on lab grown diamonds we explore the ecological impact of producing natural and lab grown stones. Lab grown diamonds are frequently sold as being a more environmentally friendly option. All forms of mining impact upon the environment. Retrieving natural diamonds from the earth requires heavy machinery, primarily relying on fossil fuels, and the extraction of massive quantities of ore. This impacts the environment around the mine, with scars left on the landscape by the displacement of so much earth. Huge amounts of water are also used in the initial sorting process. Today, new mines must complete wide-ranging assessments on the environment and agree to conditions designed to offset their impact during production and return the land to nature afterwards. The success of these efforts can vary by location and older mines were not designed with these considerations in mind, although some major diamond producers are involved in projects that offset damage caused by the industry, through reforestation and the creation of reserves to protect wildlife. Lab grown diamonds also require huge amounts of energy to create the high temperatures and pressures needed in their production. They are made in large
I
66 www.sheffieldvibe.com
factories with heavy equipment (in contrast to the clean, test tube image created by the term ‘lab grown’). It is important to remember that both materials for the equipment and the raw materials needed for the diamonds must be obtained, often through other forms of mining. Because of the intense scrutiny the diamond industry has come under it is particularly well-regulated and not all forms of mining have the same procedures in place to reduce or offset the environmental impact of their work. At first glance lab grown diamonds appear to have more eco-friendly
credentials than natural stones, but the whole process of production should be considered, and it can be argued that lab grown stones are just more removed from the mining process, making their connections less obvious. Both types of diamond require huge amounts of energy in their production, much of which comes from fossil fuels. As the world moves towards more green forms of energy both methods of production will hopefully see improvement in this regard. Developments in production methods reducing the amount of energy necessary will likely also make lab grown stones increasingly eco-friendly. It is probably fair to say that lab grown diamonds have an advantage when comparing the ecological impact of their production, especially as those methods of production continue to develop. However, as with all things, reality is more complex than advertising can suggest, and it is important to continue questioning where improvements can be made. You can read more about lab-grown diamonds on our website. CHRISTMAS
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas... GET CRAFTY THIS CHRISTMAS AND MAKE YOUR OWN BEAUTIFUL WREATH BY FOLLOWING OUR SIMPLE STEPBY-STEP GUIDE. BY MARIA ILIFFE.
Step 1 – Metal ring Start with your circle metal ring, used as a frame for the wreath.
If you’ve taken up a new hobby or pastime over the last 18 months or so, you’re definitely not alone. Forced to find ways to keep ourselves occupied, many people have turned to DIY and crafty home improvements/decorations, to re-ignite their creativity. Wreath making is a brilliant way to try your hand at craft, learn a new skill, or indulge in your passion. Remaining one of the only ways to decorate your doors – and certainly the best – wreaths provide the perfect seasonal addition to your home. With that in mind, we have spoken to
I
72 www.sheffieldvibe.com
local florist April Bell, who designs gorgeous wreaths and bouquets. April and right-hand girl Jasmine, shared their expertise and together we’ve created this step-by-step guide to help you get in the festive spirit. Whether you want to gather foliage and autumnal greenery from your garden and local parks, or buy a pack online or from a florist, the same method can still be applied. The leaves and decoration are suggestions and the steps are for guidance, so feel free to get inspired and interpret this is your own way, making a completely unique yet beautiful wreath.
What you will need: Scissors/secateurs Wire wreath ring Sphagnum Moss Seasonal evergreen foliage Natural twine 12-inch 20-gauge floristry wire Seasonal decorations *** A big thank you to April at Monica F Hewitt Florist. monicafhewitt.co.uk

CHRISTMAS
Steps 2 & 3 – Mossing
Step 4 – Collect foliage
Tie one end of your natural twine to the outer rim of the wreath ring. Then gather a handful of Sphagnum moss, place onto the wreath ring, and bind around leaving an inch gap between each bind. To ensure the moss is well bound, create plenty of tension when binding. Repeat the above process until the entire wreath ring is covered. (This will be needed for step 10).
Gather a selection of the foliage you wish to use, you can take leaves from trees, bushes or plants; alternatively, you can purchase some online or form a florist.
Step 5 – Prep foliage
Step 6 – Arrange foliage
Step 7 – Wire foliage
Cut your foliage into usable hand sized pieces. Strip any lower leaves creating approximately 1 inch of a clean stem. This will help in the following steps.
Now evenly distribute your foliage into a minimum of 15 mixed foliage bundles. You will want 3 to 5 stems in each.
Take a 20-gauge wire and bend the top 2 inches to create a hair pin. Gather one of your foliage bundles, keeping all the clean stems together.
Step 8 – Wrap wire Place the bend of the wire at the back of the stems holding securely in place with your fingers. (Making sure the wire is following the same direction). Using the long piece of wire, tightly bind around the stems. A maximum of 4 binds is required to ensure enough wire is remaining. (This is known as a single leg mount). This is important for the following step. The quicker you bind, the tighter and more secure your bundle will be.
Step 9 – Wired bundles Repeat this step for all 15 of your foliage bundles. Continued on the next page > www.sheffieldvibe.com 73
074 WSide Dec21 12/11/2021 11:25 Page 1
CHRISTMAS
Step 10 – Attach foliage bundles
Step 11 – Bend wire
Step 12 – Attach foliage bundles
Use the long piece of wire to pierce through the top of the mossed ring and tightly pull through the back until the stems are laid flush to the moss.
The wire at the back can now be pulled tightly and bent back into the moss ensuring no sharp wires are left.
Repeat this process. The top of each bundle is to slightly overlay the stems of the previous bundle. You will also want to follow a herringbone pattern which will help achieve a strong circular shape.
Step 13 – Half covered
Step 14 – Finish foliage
Step 15 – Prepare accessories
Once you’ve added half of your bundles, the wreath should look something like this, with no gaps.
Continue adding the rest of your bundles in the same pattern, pulling the wire tight and leaving no gaps.
Time to get festive! Choose the perfect accessories for you. You can use anything from dried flowers, pinecones, and cinnamon sticks to baubles, fairy lights – anything with sparkle.
Step 16 & 17 – Wire pinecone
Step 18 – Wire accessories
The single leg mount wiring technique as used in step 3 can be utilized to wire many different accessories. However, you may need to try each decoration individually to discover the best attachment method. For example, a pinecone can look quite tricky to wire but by using the natural ridges you can easily slot the wire into the pinecone. After bending it round, secure the wire by twisting the short and long sides together.
Follow a similar technique for your pother accessories, slotting and then wrapping the wire best you can, to get a strong hold.

CHRISTMAS
Step 19 – Decorate!! Let your creativity run wild! Now that all your accessories are prepared and wired. You’ll be able to follow the same technique that we used when attached the foliage bundles to the mossed wreath ring. To create a traditional style, you’ll want to evenly space your decorations through the wreath. If you’re wanting a more modern style, grouping your materials is a great way to achieve this look.
Step 20 – Hang your wreath proud! A finished wreath can look something like this.

The ultimte guide to winter hair
Hair Rituel products
WE SPOKE TO HAIR RITUEL BY SISLEY’S UK AMBASSADOR, MIGUEL PEREZ. inter can be the most wonderful time of year - but it can play havoc with your hair. The cold air can strip the moisture, leaving it looking lifeless, brittle and dull. Not ideal when you have a raft of invitations for exciting events waiting for you. But worry not, there are a few things you can do. Hair stylist to the stars Miguel Perez is Hair Rituel by Sisley’s UK ambassador and knows a thing or two about giving your hair the best treatment during the winter months. Hair Rituel’s six essential treatment products, from a smoothing shampoo to a regenerating hair care mask, can help to give your hair that luxury feel you crave. Here are Miguel’s five tips to make sure your hair looks and feel fabulous this Christmas.
W
1. Colour Don’t trust the model on the box! The colour always ends up lighter than the one shown so it’s always better to look at the chart on the top of the box to get a better idea of what the colour will end up looking like on your own hair. For permanent dye, choose a colour a touch darker than what you want because of the strong developer within the formula. With semi-permanent dye however, choose a shade slightly on the
lighter side of the colour you’re looking to achieve.
4. Style
Moving your parting over to the side is the easiest way to make your style look 2. Health like an entirely new haircut. Instead of If you have fine hair it’s best to avoid using gel for a wet look, use either creamy shampoos as these can be conditioner or a hair mask, heavy and weigh the hair such as Hair Rituel by Sisley down. Also try not to Regenerating Hair Care wash fine hair every day Mask. It will set as a gel but as this can make it feel you will be conditioning the limp. However, if you do hair at the same time as need to wash daily, only achieving your desired look. shampoo once and make I love waves like Margot sure you’re using a gentle Robbie’s with a side daily shampoo such as Hair parting and have been Rituel by Sisley Volumizing created by using a round ie Shampoo. You should only brush for volume. To Margot Robb 3rf.com 12 © Buzzfuss / ever shampoo from your recreate this look, use a roots to the mid-shafts of medium inch curling iron to curl the your hair. hair, pulling on each one to create long, lean waves.
3. Cut For me it’s all about following the natural hair texture, While it’s important to keep your strands healthy in order for them to look their best, the right haircut is also key. Make sure you have a proper consultation, and really talk about your lifestyle; if you exercise, how much time you are willing to spend on your hair each day etc. I would also always recommend bringing a picture and never go for a big change if you are not feeling your best – you might end up regretting it!
5. Salon secrets Make sure you speak the same language as your stylist, meaning that when it comes to technical words, you know exactly what they are talking about. Go for a style or colour that is easy for you to look after and maintain. There is no point in going for something that will only look nice only for a short period of time. INTEREST RATES ARE AT AN ALL-TIME LOW: HERE’S HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY IN 2022 Do you keep your savings in a UK bank account? You may be hit hard by inflation this year. Here’s how to make the most of your money to avoid this growing threat. It’s becoming increasingly common for UK savers to see little to no interest on their bank savings. In many cases, you may even see as little as 0.01% per annum interest on your accounts - that’s just £10 for a £100,000 investment. Additionally, the Bank of England has predicted inflation to rise above 4% by the end of the year. With inflation skyrocketing, the hit to your savings is set to be even more unfavourable. The lethal combination of low interest and high inflation will erode the true value of your savings if your money is not held in the correct places. In addition, reviewing your investments on a regular basis is imperative for long-term
growth, and it’s more important than ever as this year draws to a close. However, with conflicting advice on where to distribute your money, it can be difficult to decide how to invest for a fruitful future. At Hamnett Wealth Management, we always recommend investing in tax efficient methods which provide potential for capital growth to protect and grow the value of your savings in real terms. With the second Budget of the year announcing changes to taxes, allowances and reliefs, it’s more important than ever to invest in the right way for you. So, what do we recommend? Initially, we advise you to focus on reviewing your current charges and costs, as these can vigorously erode wealth over time. For example, many people are charged over 2.5% per annum for their investment portfolios. By reducing this by
just half, the compound impact is to boost your savings dramatically. It’s also important to ensure the underlying funds held in your portfolio are up to date and always the most suitable for your requirements. Have you checked you are invested in the best funds available? Often unreviewed portfolios will lead to underperformance and result in you not getting the returns you deserve from your investments. If you’re interested in reviewing your savings and investments, or you’d like a second opinion on your finances, feel free to contact us for a no obligation review. Hamnett Wealth Management are a Chartered Firm of Independent Financial Advisors, and we’re dedicated to helping you make the most of your money. You can find us at 160 Baslow Road, S17 4DR, or give us a call on 0114 235 3500 for a confidential chat.

New year debt crisis?
Hyped Marketing heads north Surrey-based digital marketing and design agency has launched in Sheffield. Hyped Marketing is a no-fuss, award-winning digital agency that focuses on making marketing easy through its distinctive monthly marketing packages and talented in-house account handlers, copywriters, designers and web developers. Together, the team delivers regular marketing activity, strategies and bespoke campaigns covering various disciplines — from social media, content writing, email marketing and PR to PPC, SEO and website design and development. Now, Hyped Marketing is setting up another, more northerly base, landing on Eyre Street right in the heart of Sheffield city centre. On the move, co-founder and managing director Jamie Barlow, said: “We’d already established ourselves as a leading digital marketing agency in the south, but why limit ourselves to one area? The north is full of innovative and exciting companies, so we can’t wait to make an impact in Sheffield, develop our client base and start offering our services up and down the country to B2B and B2C businesses across a range of different industries.”
Many businesses are now operating on just a three month reserve as the problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic continue to impact the commercial world. And businesses that try to ensure a brighter future by over trading could simply be adding to their problems, says one Sheffield expert. Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that 36 per cent of businesses who have not permanently stopped trading have cash reserves of three months or less available to continue trading. “Businesses that have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic may well have dipped into their reserve funds in a bid to keep afloat,” said Ryan Holdsworth, of Sheffield business turnaround and insolvency practice Graywoods. “Other businesses who may have taken advantage of Government support such as bounce back loans are seeing these must be repaid and this is another burden on their already delicate cash flow position. “Just as important, there are signs of much more activity from HMRC, who may have taken a more lenient approach at the height of lockdown but are now looking to recover any taxes that are outstanding. And don’t forget that anybody who took advantage of one of the grants being offered during lockdown will also be having to pay tax on that sum, just one more burden that might not have seemed important at the time.”
Google accolade The Sheffield College has achieved an international Google accolade for developing teaching staff ’s digital skills. The College is now an accredited Google for Education Reference College for its use of Google tools in the classroom. Steve Spence The tools are part of a longterm digital evolution that has sought to support staff, whatever their level of skills and confidence, to use technology in their teaching. Steve Spence, Teaching and Learning Innovator, The Sheffield College, said: “It’s fantastic to earn this international recognition.” He explained: “Our digital evolution has aimed to enhance staff ’s digital skills development and the student learning experience. “As a result, there has been greater use of technology in teaching and this is believed to be one of the contributing factors to increased student achievement rates. “This has been incredibly valuable in other ways given the impact of the pandemic on digital teaching and learning, which staff were well positioned to respond to.” 106 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Taylor&Emmet’s head of inheritance, trust and will disputes, Alex Watkinson, welcomes Sandra Kowalska to the team
Litigator appointed Sheffield’s Taylor&Emmet LLP is expanding its specialist inheritance, trust and will disputes team to meet growing demand for its services. Taylor&Emmet’s inheritance, trust and will disputes team is the largest of its type in South Yorkshire, comprising four solicitors, two assistants and a trainee. IN BRIEF
Hope Valley business people celebrate a new arrival Scores of Hope Valley businesses turned out to welcome one of the region’s longest established law firms as they launched a new base in Hathersage. Graysons Solicitors – which started in Sheffield in 1925 and also has an office on Saltergate in Chesterfield – has taken over the existing Favells’ private client practice located at Brunel House on Station Road. The firm teamed up with Hathersage’s Bank House as they staged a launch event to introduce themselves to business people in the area. They were joined at the event by clients and other professionals. Graysons has been working hard to provide a seamless transition for existing clients whilst offering its services to new clients right across the Hope Valley area. Favells’ staff based in the Hathersage Office have transfered to Graysons. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We’ve been very excited to have the opportunity to serve the people of Hathersage and the wider Hope Valley area and this event gave us the opportunity to meet other local businesses. We are a family firm that likes to give something back to the community it serves and we’re really looking forward to getting involved in village life.” Graysons were the main sponsor of Ashgate Hospicecare’s recent Forget-Me-Not appeal at Chatsworth House. They also sponsor Sheffield’s renowned “Art in the Gardens” - which is held in the Botanical Gardens every September – and the “Sheffield Young Artists” event which helps nurture the talents of hundreds of school children every year. Sheffield Girls’ achieves top rating in ISI Inspection Staff and pupils at Sheffield High School for Girls are celebrating this week after achieving the top standard in their recent inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). At a time when it is increasingly difficult to achieve the top ratings from ISI, staff at the school were thrilled to learn that, after completion of the ‘Regulatory Compliance and Educational Quality Inspection’, pupils’ academic and other achievements were rated ‘Excellent’ and the quality of pupils’ personal development was also rated ‘Excellent’ - the highest judgements possible. Pupils at the school were praised for their attitudes to learning, their proactive and positive support of others and their ability to work collaboratively and independently. Their curiosity and love of learning, as well as their confident and autonomous use of technology across the curriculum, were also highlighted as standout qualities. This is demonstrated by the school’s ‘Digital Leaders’, who were the first students in the country to be awarded a Google accredited teaching qualification, which has enabled them to support the wider adoption of technology across the school by students and staff alike. The team of inspectors, who spent four days at the school in September, noted that students at Sheffield Girls’ showed great commitment to the wider school community, were willing to take on additional responsibilities and leadership roles and demonstrated exemplary behaviour: ‘Pupils have a positive impact upon their school community, relishing the
opportunity to take on responsibilities and make a difference to the happiness of all, pupils and adults alike.’ The report continues: ‘From an early age, pupils are exceptionally good listeners, showing interest in the views of others; they are confident speakers and articulately express themselves in a range of contexts.’ Head, Mrs Nina Gunson said: “The strengths recognised by the inspectors were a super validation that Sheffield Girls’ successfully achieves its aims, which are: to nurture a love of learning and curiosity that encourages our girls to explore, question and challenge and to enable our pupils to develop confidence and pride in themselves as they prepare to take their place and make a difference in an ever changing world.” The full report can be found at www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

Helping children deal with separation at Christmas STABILITY AND REASSURANCE IS HUGELY IMPORTANT SAYS BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ FAMILY TEAM. hristmas is usually full of joy and excitement for children, but when their parents are separated or divorced, or the festive period is the time when they decide to separate, it can be a difficult and often stressful time for everyone. If you are separated or divorced, you and your partner will have lots of issues to deal with, no matter what time of year it is. Understanding how your children are affected and what you can do to help them, especially at Christmas, is likely to be the most important. Children experience a mixture of emotions when their parents split up. Confusion – about why the separation is happening. Anger – with either or both parents. Worry – about what will happen next. They may even think it is all their fault! Their emotions are likely to be heightened at Christmas, but there are things you can do to try to help them deal with the situation. Try to stay child-focussed and maintain as much routine as possible over the Christmas period – it will certainly help alleviate their worries. If you can, make your Christmas arrangements early and try to ensure that your children can spend time with both parents as well as the other people they normally see at this time, such as friends, grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins. You might both be able to spend Christmas Day together with your children, but if you can’t, you can make other arrangements.Your children could spend Christmas Day with one parent and Boxing Day with the other. Or you could split Christmas Day between you if it is convenient, with the children spending the morning with one parent and the
C
afternoon with the other. You could split the Christmas holidays so that your children spend some time with each of you.You could also alternate who they spend Christmas with – one year with one parent, the next with the other. It can be upsetting for children – and parents – if they are apart on Christmas Day, but you can always make sure that you see each other by speaking on Facetime or Skype, for example. Whatever agreement you can come to, it’s best not to argue about it.Your children will already find it difficult to understand why you are not all spending Christmas together.Try to explain what is happening in an age-appropriate way and provide them with love and reassurance. Whilst it might seem like a good idea to ask your children what they want, in reality, it’s best avoided, as it can make them feel that they have to choose between you. It’s much better if you can agree the arrangements beforehand and then discuss this with the children. If they aren’t happy with what has been decided, do listen to them, but remember that what they want may not always be practical. Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family team, says: “Christmas as a separated or separating family is likely to be difficult – the first one is always going to be the hardest for your children. Try to work together as parents,
where it is safe to do so, and provide your children with as much reassurance and stability as possible. “Your emotions are likely to be raw but do try not to let your children see you arguing – they don’t want to see that from the people they love. Also, try to avoid speaking negatively about each other to friends and family as your children are likely to be sensitive to this and hearing you say bad things about their other parent will be particularly upsetting. It’s best to keep these conversations away from your children. Posting issues relating to your ex or your separation on social media is never a good idea either!” If you are struggling to agree with your ex on issues relating to your children, contact our family law experts who can advise what options are available. An icon revisited
Luxury trailblazer
Inspired by the track
Almost 70 years ago, a sports car launched in Stuttgart immediately became a legend. The vision of expanding the potential of the Mercedes-Benz brand through motor racing successes produced the first SL as a result - a road-going racing sports car. In the decades-long development history, from full-blooded racing car to open-top luxury sports car, the new Mercedes-AMG SL now sets another milestone. It combines the sportiness of the original SL with the unique luxury and technological excellence that characterise modern Mercedes models. It returns to its roots with a classic soft top and sporty character. At the same time, the luxurious roadster as a 2+2 seater is particularly suitable for everyday use and puts its power down on the road with all-wheel drive for the first time. The new SL starts with two output levels of the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine. In the top model SL 63 4MATIC+ the engine develops 430 kW (585 hp). In the SL 55 4MATIC+ the V8 unit develops an output of 350 kW (476 hp).
With a sharpened design and innovative new technologies, the new Audi A8 maintains its reputation as a trailblazer in the premium segment. The Audi A8 is a saloon that represents status and exudes authority – now that it has been reworked, its exterior is even more representative, confident, and athletic. From a side view, the luxury saloon’s progressive character is particularly eye-catching. Stretched lines in the body of the car emphasise its length, wide wheel arches hint at the standard quattro drive system. The enhanced Audi A8 is available with four engine options. The 3.0 TDI and the 3.0 TFSI are V6 units, while the 4.0 TFSI in the S8 is a V8 with cylinder on-demand technology. The TFSI e plug-in hybrid model combines the 3.0 TFSI with an electric motor. Order books are open now with prices starting from £77,375.
BMW has honed the track-inspired characteristics of its four-cylinder highperformance model for the premium compact segment. Detail upgrades to its chassis components endow the BMW M135i xDrive with noticeably enhanced performance qualities. The standout power of the 225 kW/306 hp four-cylinder unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology under the bonnet of the BMW M135i xDrive is harnessed more effectively than ever to produce the captivating dynamics and driving experience for which BMW is renowned. Optimised traction enables drivers to explore the car’s performance limits with confidence, especially when cornering at extremely high speeds. Specially tuned M Sport steering and exceptionally powerful M Sport brakes can also be found on the standard equipment list for the BMW M135i xDrive. The compact sports car leaves the factory on 18-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard, with the option of 19-inch lightalloy items available in a variety of designs.
