Bespoke Estate Agency for Properties of Distinction

Another Property of Distinction Sold by Blenheim Park Estates SILVERDALE Dore Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire

We would like to thank all at Blenheim for their exceptional service. From the professionally presented brochure to the contractors who prepared the garden. From start to finish we were kept informed at every stage of the progress. We had over 30 viewings which Blenheim supervised and gave us feedback from each one. Once we had agreed a sale, they followed through to liaise with the solicitors and surveyors. Bill and Deborah Rodgers, Silverdale.

Classic, Urban or Pure - which are you? The world is full of products with a superďŹ cial attraction that rapidly fades. Good design that lasts forr decades is only created when something is well thought out and well made - providing a timeless, elegant look. SieMatic is 2016 winner of one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world - the German Design Council’s coveted Gold Award, and has earned its place in the history of product design. And its stunning collections across Classic, Urban and Pure kitchen concepts are there to be tailored exquisitely to the lifestyle, space and atmosphere you seek.

017 WSide July16 15/06/2016 15:07 Page 1

The kitchen long ago ceased to be the nondescript setting for laborious tasks and has instead become the expression of individual lifestyle, where practicality meets sensualityy. It should be a place to enjoy not just cooking but all of life, the heart of the home.

The SieMatic collection opens up a myriad of creative options, with room concepts integrating the functions of the kitchen with architecture, perfectly and unobtrusively. The precision design brings clear lines, generous surfaces, balance, harmony and longevity.

From Classic to Urban to Pure minimalist simplicity, SieMatic creates completely unique spaces.

ou don’t have to be beside the seaside to get into the spirit of summer. Introducing these beachthemed items to your décor will give you all the inspiration you need. Nautical blue and white stripes are

bang on trend, whilst sea greens and washed-out blues will give your home a feeling of serenity. Distressed planks and driftwood conjure up boardwalks and beach bars so are fitting in the kitchen, whilst shell, fish and beach hut motifs look especially at home in the bathroom. This month is also the time to transform your garden for sunbathing and alfresco dining with traditional deck chairs and gorgeous garden furniture. All that’s missing now is the sea and the sunshine. Why worry about your business all alone? Kevin Kerley, Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Academy for Chief Executives, says; “Its tough at the top. Running a business is a huge responsibility, as all our members know. That’s why they joined the Academy, its particularly challenging in any economic climate to be an MD or CEO”. Do the following statements strike a chord with you? • Never sure if you’re doing quite the right thing and no one impartial to discuss it with? • Need to refuel with new ideas, inspirations and direction? • Wonder how others in the same position tackle similar problems to the ones you face? • Want access to the latest business thinking and next practiced as well as help applying it to your own business? • Worried about the sheer volume of work and poor work / life balance? • Struggling with the pace of competition in your market place?

The Academy was formed precisely for these reasons to help and support business directors and senior managers to build successful business growth in good times and bad. To find out more contact Alyssia Bailey at Alyssia.bailey@chiefexecutive.com or call on 07711 211887

A bright future

WELCOME TO AN EXCITING NEW ERA AND A FRESH START FOR A BUSINESS CELEBRATING ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH. RMC Media is the new name for Regional Magazine Company, which was launched 30 years ago when the first issue of Westside, a quality lifestyle magazine for Sheffield and North Derbyshire, dropped on the doormats of 20,000 homes. Much has changed since then, and with a new website, a flourishing books division and a new online-only title called Vibe – as well as our stable of nine monthly lifestyle and business titles – the new company name is a more accurate reflection of the wide range of projects that come under the RMC umbrella. Over the following pages we’ll explain about the exciting changes afoot, as well as taking a look back at how we’ve grown over the years.

#30YearsofRMC PUBLISHERS OF WESTSIDE, SOUTHSIDE, NORTHSIDE, EASTSIDE, SIXER, IMAGE, PULSE, FIRST FOR BUSINESS & CITYMAG

BRAND NEW LOOK

Exciting times for RMC WE HAVE A NEW NAME, A NEW LOGO AND A NEW WEBSITE – WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS? ur 30th year marks an exciting new era for the company. The brand new name, RMC Media, comes with a vibrant new logo and a fresh new image to reflect the multi-faceted nature of our thriving business as it looks to the future.

O

Name Our journey began in 1986 with Westside magazine and, over the last three decades, has flourished into one of the most successful media companies in Yorkshire. Today, in addition to our eight monthly lifestyle titles, business magazine and numerous special publications, we also produce high quality cookbooks for prestigious chefs and restaurants, sell articles to like-minded publications, help budding

2

entrepreneurs establish their own magazines, and host glittering events. The name RMC Media draws on our wellestablished heritage while reflecting our propensity for exciting new projects. Under this new moniker, the future is bright for our dynamic team.

Logo Vibrant, multi-talented, forward-thinking: on these three pillars our new image was built. Working with Sheffield design agency Ink & Water, we established a logo that reflects the many different elements of RMC Media. The seven coloured shapes each represent an arm of the business: VIBE, magazines, books, restaurant guide, events, competitions and publishing services.

BRAND NEW LOOK

A window into our world WITH SHEFFIELD DIGITAL AGENCY HYDRA CREATIVE, WE HAVE LAUNCHED A BRAND NEW WEBSITE – WWW.RMCMEDIA.CO.UK – SHOWCASING THE WEALTH OF SERVICES RMC MEDIA OFFERS. VIBE A key feature of the new website – and an exciting new addition to the RMC Media portfolio – is VIBE, an online lifestyle magazinestyle website for Sheffield. For full details, turn to page 10.

MAGAZINES Each of our nine monthly titles now has its own microsite featuring digital page-turning versions of the magazine, as well as up-to-date news, articles and pictures that reflect and enhance the content of the printed publications.

RMC BOOKS Our book division has been operating as a successful publisher of high quality books for many years and now counts the likes of Chewton Glen, Simpsons, The Magpie Café, Crab House Café, Lakeland, Salvo’s, Westminster Kingsway College – and many, many more – among its satisfied clients. We’re now delighted to be bringing this aspect of the business under the banner of RMC Media.

RESTAURANT GUIDE Another brand new feature for the website is the restaurant guide, a comprehensive online guide to eating out in and around Yorkshire. From cafés and pubs to the region’s most prestigious dining establishments – and everything in between – it will include every kind of eatery available. Each entry comes with a short review, prices, opening hours, address details and a star rating so diners have all the information they need to make an informed choice.

COMPETITIONS Thousands of entries pour in for our competitions each month. From tickets for sold-out shows to luxury holidays to highly sought-after products, and much more, we always have something special up for grabs. Our most exciting competition to date, however, is open for online entries right now. To celebrate 30 years of RMC, we have 30 fantastic prizes from some of Yorkshire’s best businesses and one lucky person will win them all. See page 12 for all the details.

EVENTS Firmly established as key events in the Yorkshire foodie calendar, the Westside and Eastside Restaurant of the Year Awards recognise the wealth of culinary talent in our region. The annual ceremonies showcase these high standards and the awards themselves provide an exceptional promotional tool for the winners long after the champagne corks have popped. RMC Media also hosts special celebrations whenever the opportunity arises.

PUBLISHING SERVICES With so much experience under our belt, it is only fair that we share our expertise. With ‘Start Your Own Magazine’, we help new magazines get off the ground with all the information entrepreneurs need to launch a successful new publication. Through ‘Buy Magazine Articles’, we sell features to other high quality publications. In addition, we offer a host of other publicity and marketing solutions to businesses in Yorkshire and beyond.

July 1986 Westside Published in the summer of ‘86, the first edition of Westside was just 32 pages but, such was its popularity, within the year it had doubled in size. From the very beginning local restaurants played a key part and in the first issue Marvin Close served up a selection of his favourite tried and tested restaurants – Deakins and San Remo in Sheffield, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn and the George Restaurant and Hotel in Derbyshire all came up trumps. We have continued to support local restaurants over the years and now, the annual Westside Restaurant Awards, which celebrates the region’s finest, is one of the hottest events on the Sheffield social calendar. Our gossip column Gnome appeared very early on. This anonymous spy infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. “Who is the Gnome?” became the question on everybody’s lips. Of course, we never told. In May 1989 Westside went on the hunt for the region’s most beautiful people. Women in the fashion business nominated from the ranks of men and Barnsley hairdresser Simon Nicholls was chosen for his effortless style. Managing director Tony Morgan was nominated by beautician Lynda Price who said: “He’s not a towering six footer but he’s got everything else and he looks good whatever he wears.” The first Westside June Guide was produced in 1991 to celebrate the World Student Games coming to Sheffield. This magazine is now an annual listings guide including restaurants, shops, and things to see and do in the region. Looking forward to the Millennium, in 1999 Westside got all geared up with its guide to the best Champagne. We gathered a panel of restaurateurs at Fischer’s Baslow Hall for a tasting. They tried 13 different bottles at varying prices and the winner was a budget bubbly, Tesco’s Champagne Brut. Westside has always tried to take a light-hearted approach wherever possible and in 2011 we cocked a snook at the recession with a typical quirky look at the various ways at which you could squander a lot of money very quickly. From buying a sports car with plummeting value to having your locks trimmed at a high-end salon, we discovered there’s plenty ways to splash the cash. Of course, none of Westside’s longevity would have been possible without the backing of our advertisers and some – including the likes of Blundells and PA Jewellery, who advertised in the very first issue – have been with us from the start.

“The Gnome infiltrated the lives and parties of Westside people and gave readers a banquet of salacious gossip to feast upon. ‘Who is the Gnome?’ became the question on everybody’s lips.”

June 1989 Eastside In the first issue of the quality magazine for Doncaster, Rotherham and North Notts we investigated the ins and outs of owning a racehorse, meeting a syndicate based in the Pilgrim Father pub in Scrooby, who paid £450 each for a part-share in a nag that might one day lead them to the winner’s enclosure. With our official partnership status with Doncaster Racecourse and the St Leger Festival, Eastside has retained a strong equine focus and the magazine regularly features upcoming race days and photos from the many events. We’ve always enjoyed a good gossip here at Eastside, and our resident party animal Toad has been at the heart of the social scene for a long time, making its debut in the spring of ‘97. Rather like Doctor Who, this is a beast that changes form every few years, but our appetite for party pictures and local lifestyle news never fades. The new millennium saw Eastside enjoying an exclusive face-to-face with Doncaster’s own Jeremy Clarkson. He was quick to deny national newspaper reports that he had been rude about his home town but, in the same breath, could not resist having a dig at Rotherham and Mexborough. Eastside has always kept a very close eye on the local dining scene and three years ago we stepped up our support Recipe for for the region’s fabulous restaurants with our first Eastside Rules of success attraction Restaurant Awards, which has enjoyed great success each True romance year at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry. With its many boutiques, restaurants and thriving community spirit, the market town of Bawtry lies at the heart Down the aisle... of Eastside Magazine. In celebration of this, Eastside features IN STYLE Visit Bawtry – a section devoted to celebrating all-things • Wedding locations • What to wear Bawtry – four times a year. > How to meet Mr (or Ms) Right

with other event speakers Paul McKenna and media mogul Jamal Edwards. Most recently, in last month’s issue, writer Andy Waple took a look at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, which will be built on the former site of Don Valley Stadium. This £55million project will nurture the region’s sports research and development, health and wellbeing, as well as providing a school, college and some small stadia to support basketball and rugby. With world-class venues such as the English Institute of Sport already in place, the development of the Olympic Legacy Park will be the final piece of the Lower Don Valley Jigsaw. FFB has survived in an era in which many print publications have become obsolete. This is a clear reflection that FFB has always delivered what its readers want and has a strong standing within the local business community.

OLYMPICS: A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR BUSINESS?

first for business THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE FOR THE SHEFFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

LEADING THE BUSINESS DEBATE IN SHEFFIELD CITY REGION

August 1994 Sixer From fun, local features, and interviews with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday women’s team captain Steph Spence in 1999, to more serious topics, like how local businesses bounced back after the flood of 25 June 2007, Sixer has been at the heart of North Sheffield. In March 2004 we selflessly went in search of Hillsborough’s tastiest pork sandwiches. Four sandwich shops were put to the test. Baps from the Hungry Wolf, Béres Pork Shop, Biltons and Lily’s were all judged on quality of meat, bread, stuffing and sauce. Béres (which has been around since 1961) was declared the winner, with Lily’s in second place, and Biltons and Hungry Wolf in joint third. Always keen to keep in touch with local celebs, in January 2008 we caught up with Chapeltown lad Steve Peat. He grew up riding in Wharncliffe Woods and trained as an apprentice plumber, and it was his boss who introduced him to his first race. By 2008 he was twice World Champion, seven times British Champion and twice European Champion. In October 2011 we featured amateur dramatic society, the Stannington Players, who were celebrating 60 years of entertaining locals with quality theatre. The group has a rich history that dates back to just after the war; they actually began as a play-reading society in people’s houses. There were many name changes over the years but the group formally formed as the Stannington Players in 1951. TOUR In 2014 the Tour De France was one of – if not the – biggest DE FRANCE events to ever grace the rolling hills of North Sheffield. This N o r t h S hef fi el d all-cycling issue featured a Tour De France guide, an we lc o m e s t h e wo r l d ’ s greatest cycle race explanation of the jerseys, an interview with Team Sky’s Ben Swift, cycling fashion and a feature on the Bradfield Hill Climb. First For Business (FFB) delivers the latest business news and views from the Sheffield City Region to the desks of business leaders in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. It offers a strong, independent voice which has given it a standing within the local business community since it launched over 25 years ago. While plenty has changed over the last 26 years, much of what matters to the business community remains the same. As far back as 1990 hot topics included transport, manufacturing and city centre regeneration. Sound familiar? Of course, these are the issues that matter when you are trying to make your city – or region – as economically successful as possible and no doubt in years to come we’ll still be discussing them. And we’re sure you’ll be reading all about them in FFB! Here are some highlights from the last 26 years. In March 1995 we ran a feature about the way new trademark laws (introduced in the 1994 Trade Marks Act) were making things easier for companies. The same issue included a feature on the latest phase of the Victoria Quays project including news that Nabarro Nathanson would occupy newly-built offices on the site. The following year we asked: should businesses be on the internet? There followed a detailed explanation of the various uses of the internet, including a relatively unknown form of communication: the ‘email’. Would it ever catch on? We thought it had a chance. Back in June 2008 the cover of now-monthly FFB featured none other than Sheffield golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill. Andy Waple wrote: ‘Jessica Ennis, one of Britain’s top athletes cruelly robbed of an Olympic challenge in Beijing, is a perfect example of the new kind of export that is helping to reinforce the message that Made in Sheffield is still an international mark of quality’. As well as a keen focus on business news, FFB has interviewed some influential business people, including former director-general of the BBC, chairman of the Football Association and Sheffield hotelier Greg Dyke and TV Dragon James Caan, who was FFB’s cover star in 2010. He shared his views on business in an accompanying interview. In September 2014, FFB became an official media partner for MADE: The Entrepreneur Festival. This issue featured speaker Michelle Mone on the cover and included interviews

RMC: A TIMELINE

November 1995 Northside Northside’s first issue was delivered to select homes in Leeds in November 1995 and, by June 1996, it was also being read in York and Harrogate. The cover of the inaugural edition featured Emmerdale actor Ian Kelsey, who had been judged Leeds’ most eligible bachelor by our editorial team. In the same year, Ian was nominated for Most Popular Newcomer in the National Television Awards for his role as Dave Glover in the soap. We picked a winner whose good looks have stayed on our screens, more recently Ian has appeared in Doctors as Howard Bellamy. Also in that first issue we reviewed two of the area’s best-loved restaurants at the time. Paris at Calverley was praised for its deep fried prawns in filo pastry, with cinnamon and ginger chutney starter and roast lamb joint. Northside predicted Paris would ‘thrive on its own genuine individuality for years to come’ and we were right; Paris continued to flourish for 12 years after our review. Our dish of the month came from The Drum and Monkey in Harrogate. Fillet of whiting with crab stuffing and glazed hollandaise was on the menu, and The Drum and Monkey’s chef Tina Nuttall explained how Northsiders could recreate the dish at home. At the time the

restaurant had been running for 23 years after being transformed from a pub, and today it is still a strong favourite for seafood in Harrogate. From fine dining to fast cars, motoring has always been a big part of Northside, and over the years we have put a host of luxury cars through their paces. In 2015, to coincide with the launch of the latest James Bond movie Spectre, Northside’s Adam Kay was given the opportunity to live out his Bond fantasies behind the wheel of the latest Aston Martin, the DB9 GT model. Our reporter was also treated to a viewing of one of Bond’s most iconic cars, the Aston Martin DB10, and a chat with Bond stunt driver Mark Higgins.

A magazine for young city dwellers in Sheffield. The latest trends, hotspots and events have always been a mainstay of City. The Hipster pages keep readers up to date on new additions to the city’s bar, restaurant, music, arts and fashion scenes. City has featured some of the biggest names in popular culture since its inception. In the first year alone the magazine spoke to hairdresser Nicky Clarke, chef Raymond Blanc and actor Christopher Eccleston. Ian Brown, Tinie Tempah, Duffy, Joan Rivers and Ellie Goulding have all graced the pages of City; more recently the magazine spoke to pop superstar Meghan Trainor. Sheffield’s annual inner city music festival Tramlines has taken up a residency in City; the magazine has stood at the festival’s side as it’s grown in both popularity and size since it began in 2009. City features illustrations as its cover, often by local artists. April 2016 issue featured a design from renowned Sheffield artist Pete McKee ahead of his hugely popular Six Weeks to Eternity exhibition at Magna Science Adventure Centre, whilst other editions have featured work from local illustrators including Tom J Newell, Faunagraphic and Grace Louise Taylor. >

RMC: A TIMELINE

June 2002 Image Image was launched in June 2002 as a new voice for the Sheffield area surrounding Crystal Peaks, Mosborough and Handsworth. In our first year we interviewed Trisha Cooper. A popular voice on our radios at the time, Eckington based Trisha co-hosted the BBC Sheffield breakfast show and then went on to produce radio all over Yorkshire. In the same issue we spoke to rock and roll legend Dave Berry. In 2012 we caught up with Dave again, after what he described as the “the best ten years of my career” and he was still playing music too, performing around the world but for relaxation he was selling antiques in Sheffield. Image often champions promising local musicians and The Mosborough Music Festival has been a summer highlight since it began in 2010. Image has had a long and harmonious relationship with Crystal Peaks, producing shopping guides at important times of the year such as Valentine’s and Christmas. Crystal Peaks celebrated its 25-year anniversary with us in 2013, and in 2014 we featured the centre’s famous bees who have set up home on the roof. Our reporter met the couple who take care of the hundreds of thousands of honey makers buzzing around the roof of one of Imageland’s biggest landmarks.

March 2003 Southside Southside launched in March 2003 and has been a household name in Chesterfield, Dronfield and surroundings areas since. In 2004 we focused on the historic Flagg Races, the UK’s only remaining horse race meeting to feature a cross-country race on natural hunting ground. The Chatsworth International Horse Trials are also a Southside regular and the world renowned equestrian event fills the magazine’s pages with previews of dressage, cross country races and show jumping each summer. Southside has featured some of the area’s most talented sportsmen before they’ve made the bigtime; in 2004 we featured 12-year-old golf whizz Scott Campbell who told us his dreams of one day becoming a professional. Today Scott has accomplished his dream and travels the world playing the sport he loves. Chesterfield FC’s star striker Jack Lester was interviewed ahead of his team’s 2-0 victory over Swindon at Wembley in 2012. Chesterfield won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy that year. Southside featured the Spireites later on in 2012 but this time it was because their home ground was being taken over by the rocket man himself, Elton John. The megastar played to a sell-out crowd at the then B2net stadium in his first and only gig in Chesterfield to date.

AUGUST 2013 Issue 6

Pulse was launched in 2013 and went straight to the heart of the Chapeltown and Ecclesfield community, where it has remained ever since. In its first issue Pulse featured the Chapeltown Forum. The official aim of the group was to champion the needs of the Chapeltown area and in talking about the group in the magazine, Pulse supported and promoted a great community cause, setting a trend that has continued through the magazine to the present. Later in 2013 the magazine featured the Grenoside Reading

Room, and spoke to the group of volunteers who took the building on when it was handed to the community. They transformed it into a heritage centre which has grown to become a hub of the community today. In 2015 Pulse met the volunteers who saved Eccesfield Library and managed to protect the library’s future after the council were forced to make cuts to the service. Alongside charitable community causes and events, Pulse has featured some of the area’s most interesting characters, including: entrepreneurs, such as Nose Warmer inventor Sally

Steel-Jones who featured in 2013; creative types, such as the Capelle Floral Art Society in 2015 and treasure-hunting gold panner Peter Sampson, who featured in Pulse’s June issue. Pulse’s sports champions have not been overlooked. We spoke to Betty Codona, the lady responsible for putting women’s basketball on the map in 2014, in 2015 the spotlight was on four lady golfers from Sheffield and Barnsley who were taking on the Longest Day Golf Challenge for Macmillan Cancer Support.

30 HAPPY RETURNS

Chris Wilson with Jo Hercberg

Giving something back AS PART OF OUR 30TH CELEBRATIONS, STAFF AT RMC MEDIA WILL BE VOLUNTEERING THEIR SERVICES FOR MANY LOCAL GOOD CAUSES OVER THE COMING YEAR. THE FIRST TO STEP UP IS MANAGING EDITOR CHRIS WILSON. ere at RMC Media we’ve always tried to do our bit to make the world a better place, raising money for national and local good causes through cake sales, quizzes and charity days... and we will always continue to do so. But to celebrate our 30th year in business, we are also looking to do something a little different. This time, rather than shaking the charity tin and asking others to contribute, we’ll be getting stuck in and making our own practical contribution to the many good local causes that are close to our hearts. 30 Happy Returns is RMC Media’s modest way of putting something back into our community. As individuals and collectively, we will be going out and about over the next year, doing anything from litter picking to volunteering in animal shelters. We’ll return to this story regularly over the coming months and you can see how we get on, both in the magazines and on our website. You may spot us out and about in the community – we’ll be wearing the rather snazzy t-shirts worn by managing editor Chris Wilson (see above). Meanwhile, to get the ball rolling, Chris spent some time volunteering at a new cafe that takes a unique approach to sourcing ingredients.

H

The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield So how do I find myself wiping down tables and chopping vegetables in a café where people are invited to ‘pay what they feel’ for their meal? It starts with the fact that 15 million tonnes of food is ditched in the UK every year. That’s three wheelie bins of food per person, making us the most wasteful nation in the EU. Food for thought – especially when, like me, you are fortunate enough to have a job that involves quite a lot of eating out in rather nice restaurants across Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. I first became aware of The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield last summer when a friend told me she had spent the day after Tramlines, a weekend music festival in Sheffield, helping out in a pop-up restaurant where the main ingredients consisted of food left over after the bands moved on and the fans went home. The food was not past its sell-by date or contaminated in any way, but after events like this, the simplest thing for the vendors was simply to dump it and move on to the next event. Most of it was destined to end up in a landfill site. A small band of volunteer chefs, kitchen hands, pot washers and general helpers was trying to do something about this. Diners could pay what they could afford, or what they thought the meal was worth. Those who believed in the cause and could afford it might decide to pay more; those with empty pockets could volunteer, washing dishes in return for food. It turned out this pop-up restaurant was far from a one-off but part of a movement that began when Leeds-born chef Adam Smith found himself working on a farm in Australia where he witnessed the vast scale of food waste, in

agriculture and the catering industry. He came home and set up a café in Armley, Leeds, in 2013. There are now 95 across the country, staffed by volunteers cooking food that would otherwise go to waste, donated by local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield is now a year old and has grown from pop-up events to having its own café, at Regather Works on Club Garden Road, very close to London Road’s bustling array of restaurants, pubs and shops. Project director Jo Hercberg spent a decade in the online travel industry before deciding to leave the corporate world and do something she really believed in. The café is staffed by volunteers whilst food comes from local businesses, supermarkets, catering events, local households, food banks, farms and wholesalers. “Hopefully there will be pay-as-you-feel cafés all over the country soon,” says Jo. “But if the message spreads, and people start to think and act more about food waste, there will come a time when they close down because they won’t be needed.” As for my own small contribution, a morning spent wiping down and setting tables, putting the chalk boards outside and making a salad to go with the lunchtime quiches that Jo had cooked the previous day, was rewarding, and fun too. The Real Junk Food Project, Sheffield’s café is at Regather Works (57-59 Club Garden Road, Sheffield, S11 8BU). Open Thursday and Friday, 11am-8pm and Sunday 11am-3pm. realjunkfoodsheffield.com

TESTIMONIALS

Success stories “As a director in Sheffield’s charity sector for many years I look to Westside and FFB to keep me in the picture. I need to know what is happening and, more important, who is making it happen! The magazines always have a finger on the pulse of the corporate, political and social scene, giving an honest and unbiased opinion. Over many years as a director at Whirlow Hall Farm, Freeman College and The Lyceum Theatre Trust, I have benefitted from their support of our fundraising campaigns and of the Sheffield charitable sector in general. They are a great team and long may their great work continue.“ David Heugh. Chairman, THE LYCEUM THEATRE TRUST

“RMC Media is a great supporter of local businesses and Bradfield Brewery has benefited from this support. The Sixer magazine in particular has supported our business not just with advertising but with editorial features and joint projects. We like to show solidarity within the local business sector and RMC Media provides an ideal platform for us to sit alongside other local businesses and encourages consumers to shop local.” Lisa Moat, BRADFIELD BREWERY

“We have advertised with Northside for a few years now and have received two editorials written by Phoebe Seymour. The way Phoebe has captured the work we do with vulnerable people and how she has described what we are trying to do here has been wonderful. We have seen a direct correlation to the distribution of the magazine and footfall increasing. The placement of the magazine has also proved successful with customers visiting after receiving it at home, as well as finding it in business locations such as private hospitals. ” Buffy Parkinson, CARING FOR LIFE

“The Crown Hotel has advertised with Eastside since the very beginning. Being ‘the’ social magazine of the local area to Bawtry, it has always been important for the Crown to have a consistent message within the magazine – this usually comprising of a DPS each month plus the social side of what’s been happening at the Crown and in Bawtry. A big part of this also has been the Visit Bawtry supplement, which appears quarterly. Stephanie Burns has been our contact for editorial and has always been extremely professional, prompt and articulate. She just ‘gets us’. Writing about the Crown each month, Stephanie has a total feel for all things Crown. She knows who we are and what we are about. She is almost part of the team! Once the pieces are written, we are then handed over to Terri for design and it always results in a great, readable DPS. We send Terri what’s been happening at the Crown – balls, dinners, wedding events, new restaurant menus and racing, to name just a few of the many goings on. We have also been extremely honoured to have started and hosted the Eastside Restaurant Awards with Terri and the team. Each year the event grows and grows and is one of the biggest nights in the area for all eateries and restaurants. To sum up, Eastside magazine hits our target markets and enables us to promote weddings, the restaurant, the bar and any events we have going on at the hotel. It works, and this is why we have been a loyal customer every month for years. So happy 30th, team Eastside, from the team at the Crown Hotel Bawtry!” THE CROWN HOTEL, Bawtry

“Westside are a great company to deal with. Leah in particular couldn’t be more helpful and understands what her clients are trying to achieve in their advertising.” Jennifer Beal, sales manager, ELR LETTINGS

“Passion… commitment… energy… Come on Sheffield! Thank you to Mel and the team on behalf of everyone at Atkinsons for your continued support. We’re all in this together.” David Cartwright, store manager, ATKINSONS

“We have been advertising in Image magazine for several years now, on a monthly basis. Claire is very accommodating and always produces accurate work from any copy we send over, nothing is too much trouble and we are very pleased with the prompt service. Advertising in the Image certainly works for us.” Mandy Tyler, sales, marketing and events manager, SITWELL ARMS

“We have been advertising in Image for some time now and find that it is great brand awareness for us as a company, a good talking point in our appointments and a great platform to showcase our efforts in the community. Steph has been assisting me with the editorial pages we run in the magazine monthly and my column ‘ask the expert’. She always has a very forward-thinking and enthusiastic approach to our page and I am always excited to hear and see her ideas and outcome. To say I am pleased every month would be an understatement. I feel that Steph is valued asset to the RMC Media and it is a pleasure dealing with her.” Samuel Reaney, branch manager of HAYBROOK CRYSTAL PEAKS

“On behalf of myself and the management group I would like to take the opportunity to say a great big thank you for your hard work at First For Business magazine. We are delighted with all the work you have accomplished, and in particular Charles for his patience working with the brand colour scheme to develop the folders etc. We look forward to a long working relationship, it is a pleasure to work with professionals who are also nice people. It has been a particularly challenging workload for us in this past few weeks and your help has been invaluable.” Beryl Henshaw, managing director, B&E TOGETHER LTD.

Fabulous fashion

Trends have come and gone over the last 30 years but New Image has adapted with the times and continues to excel.

T

his year fabulous fashion boutique New Image is celebrating 30 years of providing individual fashion with a friendly personal service. Owner Lesley Taylor and her late mother established the store in a small single unit shop and, as demand grew, they expanded to larger premises at 277 Middlewood Road in 1989, where the boutique has thrived ever since. “So much has changed since we started,” Lesley says. “Retail has seen a lot of changes and we have adapted with the times and trends. Looking back, we used to sell a lot of jackets, suits, formal and corporate wear, but now we are more about stylish casuals and occasionwear.” One thing that has remained however, is their loyal client base, and Lesley says responding to the needs of her customers has been essential for success. “It became clear that people were looking for special occasionwear more and more so, in spring 2007, we expanded and created a special occasionwear department in the upstairs of the building.” Employing a team you can trust to offer friendly and honest customer service is

another crucial element of this business and Lesley says she has been lucky to have a genuine, loyal and reliable team that customers feel confident with and trust their opinion. “Mrs Debra McHale joined the team in April 2011 and her keen eye to organise displays and the ability to manage the merchandising has made her an invaluable member of the team, also assisting myself with various day to day aspects. Mrs Amanda Glaves, Mrs Barbara Smart and Mrs Alison Batty are also part of our excellent sales team.” “We have managed to stand the test of time by retailing quality merchandise and we pride ourselves on excellent customer service. Every customer is made to feel welcome and my team are on hand to offer helpful advice,” Lesley adds. New Image not only offers beautiful dresses and outfits, they also have two seamstresses on hand to ensure everything is a perfect fit. Furthermore, milliner Darcie

Mae visits the store every few months for a meet the milliner event, where ladies are encouraged to bring in their outfits to find a hat that matches, or to discuss a bespoke headpiece that Darcie will design and create. The boutique is well known for its fashion shows and on 5 July 1.30-6.30pm the Joseph Ribkoff roadshow team will be instore; showing the fall/winter collection and the hottest new styles. Models will be showcasing pieces from the range while guests browse at their leisure with a glass of fizz in hand. Visit the boutique today to peruse the fabulous summer sale as well as the new season Joseph Ribkoff interim collection, which includes beautiful jackets, skirts, and lightweight coats, as well as stunning metallic pieces – very on trend this season. New Image is open until 7pm on Tuesdays and clients can also request evening or a Sunday appointments. Ticking along nicely H L Brown’s new watch workshop is the perfect place to keep your timepiece in top condition.

W

hether it’s a family heirloom, a gift for a special birthday or something you bought with your first wage, a watch is often a person’s most prized possession. When something so treasured no longer ticks along as it once did, taking it to be repaired or serviced can be nerve-wracking, but at H L Brown in Barker’s Pool, you can be assured your watch will receive only the highest standard of care.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The Sheffield family jewellers, established in 1861, has built a brand-new watch workshop designed by Rolex Geneva. It offers the perfect environment for H L Brown’s Rolex accredited watchmaker Luke Ireland to service and refurbish the world’s most highly-engineered timepieces. Luke has worked for H L Brown for over 19 years and is delighted with the new workshop. “We have excellent equipment and the space has changed from a traditional workshop to more of a clinical setting,” he says. The workshop features two benches, one for case work and another watchmaking bench, where Luke expertly dismantles and reassembles pieces. There is a state-of-theart ultrasonic cleaning tank and a rigorous testing process for water resistancy, including vacuum, pressure and condensation tests, ensuring your watch is perfectly sealed against the elements. A fine eye for detail and a methodical approach is essential for this line of work and, with almost two decades in the industry, Luke has certainly perfected his craft. “You need a lot of patience, but I like to really get into the zone,” he says. “Once I have completely disassembled a piece I examine each individual part with a really

strong eye glass to ascertain what work is required. “I enjoy working on any good-quality watches, it doesn’t have to be amazingly expensive to be well engineered. It can still be interesting because, even though they are all doing the same job, they are all built slightly differently.” Luke adds: “My favourite is probably Rolex because I work on them so much, I understand the brand and as it’s so well made, it goes together and comes apart easily; it effortlessly falls into place.” “Watchmaking is a highly skilled profession and requires a phenomenal level of dexterity and concentration,” says James Frampton, H L Brown managing director. “The increased popularity of mechanical wrist watches has seen an increase in the demand for trained watchmakers and we are extremely fortunate to employ one of the very best. Luke’s experience and skills, along with the new Rolex-accredited workshop means we can offer our customers the very best service.” To find out more about the services or products H L Brown offer visit www.hl-brown.co.uk or call 0114 272 4388. uying an engagement ring is a wonderful and exciting experience and getting it right is important. As well as being a symbol of the most important relationship of your life, it’s also something your fiancé will wear with pride every day. It’s only right that something so special should be exactly as you have always imagined and that is exactly what bespoke jewellers Tiago, on the corner of Archer Road, do: take your ideas and turn them into beautifully crafted pieces. The team take great pride in making the whole experience of designing and creating jewellery personal to you. Every item is designed, manufactured and finished right here in Sheffield. “You choose the gem stones, the metal and the design and we do the rest,” says jeweller and Tiago owner David Raynes. He understands how important it is to get each piece exactly right and, with over 30 years’ experience, he has the knowledge and skills to be able to do exactly that. “I can spend hours with customers discussing a design. It’s something you will look at every

day for the rest of your life, so I encourage people to come in, have a chat, find out your options, then go away and think about it.” This honest and relaxed approach has paid dividends, as the majority of David’s customers come through recommendation. To make sure each ring is absolutely perfect, he even orders in several similar diamonds for each customer to choose from, because a slight difference in cut can completely change the appearance of the gem. To create bespoke pieces David blends CAD/CAM technology and traditional handcarving techniques. There is also an impressive portfolio of realistic CAD drawings showcasing exactly how your ring will look, and David even offers an additional service of 3D printed models, so you can actually try on a version of the final design to get an accurate idea of proportions and dimensions. This service can be used for any type of jewellery – not just engagement rings – so if you have a family heirloom you would like to reinvent, David can help you from design right through to completion. And, if you think a bespoke piece of

jewellery will cost you an arm and a leg, fear not. “With the advancements in technology and CAD, something that might have took three to five days to make, only takes a few hours,” David reassures. “This means the labour costs are less and we can pass these savings on to our customers, so bespoke work can now be available to more people”. As well as beautiful engagement rings David has become well known as the only jeweller that makes genuine Sheffield steel wedding bands and cufflinks. Using steel from one of the few remaining companies still making steel in Sheffield, they are made entirely in the city and beautifully represent its industrial heritage. They come in polished, hammered and brushed finishes and can be laser engraved with personal touches such as handwritten names, messages, logos or dates. Tiago offers a range of high quality brands of silver jewellery too, and their showroom is brimming with beautiful designs in highly polished display cabinets. ll aboard, for a spice journey that takes us slightly off the beaten tracks and into some interesting and tastebud-tingling sub-stations of Indian cuisine. OK that’s the railway-themed puns out of the way. When an Indian restaurant is based in the old station house of Dore & Totley station, with the main line to Manchester and all parts south still very much alive and with the occasional train rattling outside the back window, it’s hard to resist. In the two years since Rajdhani opened, a loyal following has been keeping manager Afzal Miah and his team on their toes. It’s a lovely looking restaurant, bright and contemporary with the high gabled ceiling running through the heart of the building creating a real sense of space. Busiest times during the week are early evenings, as local parents bring their offspring for an early education in the joys of Indian cuisine. It’s a good venue for curry novices and coinnoisseurs alike to try a taste of something different, as Afzal likes to offer his own unusual offerings alongside more popular dishes. My starter, after poppadoms and a pickle tray containing no fewer than six delicious dips, was a case in point. Murg kolezee is presented in the style of the classic prawn puree, but inside the puffed bread was chicken livers cooked with roasted onions, herbs and spices. The livers were beautifully moist, slightly earthy and packed with the taste of fresh herbs and spices. You may need to ask for our second

starter as it isn’t on the printed menu but the spicy fish fry – a fillet of salmon, slightly caramelised on the outside and moist within and served with a refreshing slightly sour sauce – is worth seeking out. We were pleased to see that Rajdhani offers three different types of lassi – sweet, salty and mango – by the glass or by the jug. More Indian restaurants should make this delicious yoghurt drink that matches spicy food very well. A jug of the salty was just about the best my dining companion, who always searches for it as she rarely touches alcohol with Indian food, had tasted. On to the main course, but first a word about side dishes which in my view make all the difference between an average Indian meal and a great one. Rajdhani really excelled itself here; the fluffiest rice, light and crispy nan bread and, best of all, a rich and spicy daal that tasted as if it was overloaded with enough butter to come with a health warning. However, Afzal insisted that slow-cooking the garlic in a modest amount of butter on a low heat at the start of the cooking process means it doesn’t burn, and results in a luxurious final taste that needn’t involve an artery-hardening high fat content. Those side dishes were almost a meal in themselves, but mains of Rajdhani king prawn, with the juiciest tiger king prawns, punchy green chillies and a hot spicy sauce and Ghust Hydrabadi, very tender marinated lamb in a rich, dark sauce lifted by fresh herbs and zapped with a touch of naga pickle, completed the picture.

The true taste of Italy?

If you want to take your tastebuds on holiday this year, travel no further than Maranello’s.

S

tepping into Maranello’s on a mild summer’s evening, to be greeted with a warm welcome from owner Alfredo Geci, it was almost as if we were in the seven-hilled city Rome, and not in the centre of the seven hills of Sheffield. The exposed brickwork scattered with vintage advertisements for classic Italian brands, an impressive wine display and rustic chandeliers adds to the authentic feel. The downstairs of the restaurant was packed when we arrived, and as Alfredo greeted regulars like family and new customers like old friends we settled down for our meal. Our beautifully presented starters arrived, bringing a sea of colours to the table. I opted for the tricolore, a ring of tomato, mozzarella and a rarely spotted, perfectly ripe avocado; the balsamic glaze added a beautiful kick to the fresh flavours. My companion chose the Crostini di Prosciutto, parma ham, sundried tomatoes and mozzarella served on Maranello’s’ homemade bread, a tried and tested blend of Italian flavours that complemented each other impeccably. When choosing our mains I decided to branch out from my usual, widely considered boring, Italian restaurant dish of choice, the margarita pizza, and explore some of Maranello’s’ more exciting options. I was spoilt for choice with the restaurant’s impressive vegetarian options of pastas, risotto and pizza and eventually settled on the Ravioli di Zucca. The generously filled parcels of pumpkin were deliciously sweet, whilst the pesto was subtle

WESTSIDE 90

enough to not overpower the main flavours and offered a faultless accompaniment to the pasta. My companion stuck to the more classic pizza option, choosing the Pizza San Daniele which came piled high with rocket, parma ham and parmesan. Alfredo, who has been passionate about food since he came to Sheffield and completed a course in catering and hospitality 15 years ago, looked after us well during our meal and service was prompt and polite. Despite the restaurant being busy Alfredo effortlessly attended to all his customers, keeping wine glasses topped up and bringing out each dish with a beaming smile. We were presented with a dessert menu of Italian classics; my companion stuck to a more traditional dessert and chose the tartufo limoncello, whilst I couldn’t resist the temptation of the individual banoffee pie. The tartufo limoncello was a refreshing and faultless after dinner treat with a nostalgic sherbet taste whilst the banoffee pie satisfied my incredibly sweet tooth with its blend of ice cream, caramel and chocolate. Albeit unassuming from the outside, and having a relatively small downstairs that lends itself to small groups, there is extra seating for up to 40 people upstairs. Once inside Maranello’s you know you’re in an authentic Italian restaurant, everything from the warm welcome to the after dinner coffee has a true feel of Italy about it. So, if you want to take your tastebuds on holiday this year, there is no need to travel any further than Ecclesall Road.

ach summer, there is one event on Sheffield’s social calendar that brings together the cream of the crop from the region’s thriving dining scene like no other. A dazzling celebration of Sheffield and Derbyshire’s most impressive eateries, the hotly-anticipated Westside Restaurant Awards recognises the unrivalled talent that is on our doorstep… and this year’s event was bigger and better than ever. Flashbulbs popped, wine flowed, and excitement reached fever pitch as guest host Howard Middleton – who flew the flag proudly for Sheffield in the 2013 Great British Bake-Off – marshalled proceedings, and announced a grand total of 16 award winners. It was a fantastic party with a wide range of prize-winners, and the biggest smiles on the night belonged to Charlie Curran and the team at Peppercorn, as the popular Abbeydale Road South diner scooped a dazzling double first – Best Contemporary and the highly-coveted Westside Restaurant of the Year. Other highlights of the evening included Darren Utley winning Best Young Chef. This talented whippersnapper has been cooking up a culinary storm at the Cross Scythes in Totley for the last three years and is already making his mark with his creative flair and passing on his knowledge to other trainee chefs. This year, the Best Indian Restaurant category was so hot our judges could not ‘slide a poppadum’ (as Howard so eloquently put it) between the top two. So, in an

unprecedented move, both Ashoka and Butlers Balti House were named as joint winners. Elsewhere, the nominations list saw wellestablished eateries like Nonnas and Napoleons sitting alongside newcomers, such as pizza-haven Proove in Broomhill, that have made an immediate impact – proving the city’s restaurant scene is as thriving as ever. The evening kicked off with a warm welcome from RMC Media’s managing editor Chris Wilson and Howard kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening with witty one-liners, while Westside’s publishing manager Samantha Warsop was on hand to present the awards. The awards were held at Sheffield’s premier banqueting venue, Baldwins Omega, and over 200 guests enjoyed a sumptuous five-course meal provided by host David Baldwin and his team, with a level of quality that aptly reflected the evening’s gifted guests. Our special thanks go to Fran O’Neill of The Austin’s Group, sponsors of the awards, who ensured attendees were in a sparkling mood from the off with a refreshing glass of fizz. Fran also specially selected one white wine, Las Condes Chardonnay from Chile, and one red, Pure Sangiovese from Italy to match the menu. These excellent choices and delicious food from the ever-consistent Baldwins, provided the perfect combination. Though every nominated restaurant was praised for its incredibly high standards, they couldn’t all be winners. Read on to find out who picked up the region’s most coveted awards. Â

Westside Restaurant of the Year & Best Contemporary Peppercorn

DOUBLE WINNERS!

When general manager Kelly Ware and head chef Charlie Curran took over Moran’s on Abbeydale Road, they had some big culinary shoes to fill. But just three years on, they’re more than living up to their predecessors. Charlie has been a chef for over 25 years. After working his way up to head chef in celebrity chef Brian Turner’s London restaurant and working at various restaurants in Leeds and Sheffield, it was only a matter of time before his own venture received the recognition it deserves. Kelly said: “All the standards are there – good, strong cooking and excellent service – but in an informal, laid-back atmosphere.” Charlie added: “If there’s one thing we hear from our regulars, it’s that our food is consistently good. I think that’s the key. If you can get that right, it’s the perfect formula.” Reigning triumphant as our double winners, it’s no wonder the pair were grinning from ear to ear. “We’re elated!” continued Charlie. “We weren’t expecting the first award for Best Contemporary, so to get the second award is really amazing.”

Best Newcomer Proove

Reader’s Choice Casanova

Rob Engledow and Deepak Jaiswal had always loved pizza, but it wasn’t until a trip to Napoli that the pair were inspired to set up shop. You may have noticed their pizza wood burner ovens ‘popping up’ around the city, but to get the full Proove experience, it’s well worth visiting their restaurant in Broomhill. Co-owner Rob said: “We’re very excited to have won. We do lots of weddings, festivals and we have some regular popups – one in Dronfield and on in Chesterfield. “I’ve always wanted to open a restaurant, but the pop-ups are a good way of getting your feet wet with less risk. Getting experience, staff and branding – it’s very exciting.”

With an overwhelming number of votes, this Crookes Italian is evidently adored by new and regular clientele alike. Owner Salvo Ilardi was overjoyed to hear that he had won the approval of Westside readers. “We are very surprised to win the award and it’s great to be the people’s choice. We are a genuine Italian restaurant and we are good at what we do. “The secret to our success is that we have nice customers. At Casanova, we treat our customers as family. It’s for everyone – from young to older people.” A loyal customer added: “We try other restaurants, but we always go back to Casanova.”

Best Gastro Pub The Tickled Trout

Best Hotel Restaurant Brocco on the Park

The Tickled Trout is no stranger to success, having won the Reader’s Choice Award last year. They may be based further afield, but they have once again proven they are worth the journey to Barlow. Owner Chris Mapp said: “I’m delighted for my team. Without them I’m nothing. Our success is down to their hard work. They’re all wonderful people – enthusiastic, energetic and devoted. “Tom our manager helps run the ship, Frankie is my assistant, Lucy has been our bar supervisor since day one and Dave and our head chef Matthew have both worked their arses off to get us where we are today.”

Our judges weren’t giving a thought to calorie counting when they named Brocco on the Park Best Hotel Restaurant of the region, but owner Tiina Carr is determined to deliver delicious food with a healthy focus. Tiina said: “We look at how we cook things to be cleaner and leaner. Eat well is our philosophy. We have imaginative chefs who care about what they do. We go for quality, we don’t skimp, we don’t serve things out of a packet and everything is made from scratch.” The hotel was last year’s Best Newcomer and Tiina was delighted to be back. “There were a lot of hotels in the category, so it really wasn’t expected. It’s nice to win again – maybe a hat-trick next year?”

Best Night Out Napoleons With a gorgeous bar and restaurant upstairs and plenty of room to place your bets on downstairs, Napoleons has the full package. Their mix of contemporary and globally-influenced dishes have really stepped up in the last few years and monthly menus ensure plenty of variety for regulars. Catering manager Craig Allsop said: “The standard of food and the service we offer is high and our customers are always extremely happy when they leave. Obviously we do have the casino as well which adds to it. “It appeals to all ages and all different kinds of people. We get a lot of celebrations – birthdays and anniversaries and it does seem to be a place where a lot of people like to come and celebrate.”

Best Pub Grub The Crown Inn at Totley With five pubs in Barnsley and two in Sheffield, general manager Jack Hallsall knows from experience that when it comes to pub grub, it’s all about providing old favourites at high standards. Jack said: “We go back to basics. People get a warm welcome every time they come in and its proper, honest food. The plan is to carry on developing The Crown, growing it and making it a part of the community.” Their head chef Jamie Oliver added: “It’s nice to have your efforts recognised. We take pride in what we do. I just think if you’re going to do something, do it right.” Â

Best Café/Light Bite Ella’s Café

Best Young Chef Winner Darren Utley, Cross Scythes

Though a self-confessed café, you are just as likely to enjoy a succulent steak in the evening, as a full English breakfast and a good cup of coffee in the morning – they also offer vegetarian alternatives. But that’s not the only stand-out thing about the café. Owner Matthew Begley said: “We have a loyal customer base. The bistro nights are going great and we are now doing popup Peruvian, Mexican and Georgian nights and they’re always busy. “We have guest chefs and the Mexican chef is quite keen to change everyone’s view of Mexican food – it’s not just tacos and burritos.”

Not only is Darren Utley enjoying the kudos which comes with the award, Cross Scythes boss Stuart Hitchman has doubled the £100 prize money to help kick-start his career. Darren started by making pies and burgers in the kiosks of Sheffield United FC, before turning down a team leader role to pursue catering at Cross Scythes in May 2013. Darren said: “I was nominated last year, so it’s spurred me on to be better this year. Since our head chef Simon Ayres came in, I’ve progressed much further, so thank you to him for helping me over the last year and a half.” “Darren is a young and unique individual,” added Simon. “I’ve trained a lot of people and worked in a lot of kitchens and it’s very rare you get a genuinely nice chef who’s kind-hearted, willing to do the job and is successful at it as well.”

Best Family Friendly Hassop Station Cafe

Best Young Chef Runner-Up Kamil Bajorek, West 10

Conveniently located one mile outside of Bakewell on the Monsal Trail, Hassop Station Café is a fantastic stop-off for families after a leisurely trek or cycle. It’s quite a skill to satisfy the needs of every family member, but the café at Hassop has stepped up to the challenge. Rebecca Stokes who runs the café with her husband Duncan said: “We do a lot for children, but we do a lot of higher end stuff as well. People know they are going to get quality food for the whole family. Head chef Graham Mitchell and the team work really hard to give a good food offering.”

Kamil Bajorek started at West 10 when he was 22, and after almost four years as a sous chef, became head chef in September 2015. Owner Jonny Higginbottom said: “I think it’s absolutely amazing, I am so made up for him. What he does is amazing – all three of my chefs are amazing. I am extremely proud.” Kamil added: “I appreciate that my talent has been recognised, but at the same time, it’s my team and the people who I work with, so I can’t take all the credit by myself. We have made a few changes, but I hope customers like my taste and the dishes we create.”

Best Oriental Patoo Thai

Best Italian Nonnas

The restaurant won Best Newcomer back in 2011 and since then, has gone from strength to strength. Patoo Thai continues to blend authentic cuisine and brilliant customer service. Owner Jariya Sancunakorn was visiting family in Thailand, but her sister Mayuree Msigapong was happy to accept the award on her behalf. “She sends regards to all of you. We’ve had a refurbishment and have changed the colour of the interior for a new warmer look. “We will now try to do more to promote our dishes and will offer a free meal for those who come to the restaurant to celebrate their birthday.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, Nonnas continues to be a firm favourite on Ecclesall Road, providing locals with everything from breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, to a bustling wine bar. Combined with authentic Italian ingredients and an all-Italian wine list, Nonnas was the clear winner. General manager Stefano Buralli said: “We try to stick with the Italian way. There’s always something new to try. It’s seasonal. “We are always changing the food menus seasonally and we change the wine and cocktail lists once a year. And from January we are starting a new monthly special with food and wine from each region of Italy.”

Best Indian Butlers Balti House & Ashoka Our compère Howard Middleton put it best when he said, “The competition for this category was so hot, you couldn’t put a poppadom between them.” So for the first time in Westside Restaurant Award history, we have two winners for Best Indian – Butlers Balti House and Ashoka. Though Ashoka recently had a refurbishment, they continue to celebrate tradition with their retro-styled restaurant. Owner Rahul Amin said: “We’re really happy. It’s nice for the team to be recognised for all the hard work they have put in. We are 49 years old this year, so it’s a nice little gift before our 50th next year. “I think great food, great ingredients and not taking any shortcuts is important. We always try and do the best job we can.” Bulters Balti House has built up an outstanding reputation in the city centre over the past 19 years. This year they are planning to expand with the opening of a Chinese restaurant upstairs. Owner and manager Sajid Quader said: “I started working at Butlers when it opened in 1997 and worked my way up. Some restaurants make dishes that all end up tasting the same. “What makes us unique is that every dish is completely different. And we don’t just do Indian dishes. We cater for a wide range of tastes with Northern Punjab and Pakistani dishes too.

WS Meet the Head

Looking forward Headteacher Anne Camm, at Snowdrops Pre-School, is aiming to build on the school’s fantastic reputation.

S

nowdrops first opened its doors to young girls and boys back in September 2007. It celebrated its eighth birthday this year and Anne Camm has been at Ashdell since April 2008. “I have seen many little Snowdrops grow and develop into confident young learners. Last summer marked a special occasion as our first Snowdrop children graduated from Ashdell out into the big wide world of Senior School. “We take children who are rising threes; this means the term the children turn three is the term that they can start their Snowdrops experience. We nurture each child’s natural curiosity in an enriched, secure environment, which allows freedom to develop their individual strengths and desire to learn. “A typical day for me involves meeting

parents often at breakfast club, showing parents round the school, seeing the children during their specialist activities including PE, Spanish, tennis, music and sports stars, talking to staff, reading a story to the children and lots more. “That being said, no day is ever the same – I could be reading a story one day and making a dried pasta playground the next! It is a pleasure to help children to progress from their starting points on their educational journey. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing Snowdrop children blossom into confident, independent and caring children, who are ready to continue their learning journey and enjoy all that life has to offer. “I would like to build on the wonderful reputation of Snowdrops Pre-School and continue supporting the children through their carefully planned curriculum, which

enables the children to explore their world, and gives them the tools and skills to develop their confidence and a sense of achievement. “If you would like to come and see for yourself please contact Mrs Ollivent on 0114 266 3835 or email office@ashdellprep.co.uk. hris Emmott has been headmaster at Mylnhurst for 20 years. He started back in January 1996 with 90 children on role and over that time, the site has transformed into a vibrant educational campus with over 200 children that tops the ‘Times Top 100 Prep Schools’ in Sheffield. “We set out to create an outstanding educational environment – all on one site – and together with our 25m pool, sports hall and playing fields, Mylnhurst is a very special place to grow and learn. “Children join Mylnhurst at the age of three and we care for them up to their 11th birthday. It’s always sad to say goodbye to our Year 6 children but they are very independent and ready to move on by then. “No two days are every the same in this job and can include anything from meeting parents, taking maths groups, running chess club and working with colleagues and

directors. Assemblies are always a very special time for reflection, laughter and appreciation of our wonderful children and school community. “My favourite part is always celebrating the children’s achievements when they knock at the door and share their beautiful writing, artwork or problem solving skills‌ or a sneaky piece of chocolate cake from a birthday celebration. “Having recently opened our amazing Early Years Centre we are now looking at further enhancing our outdoor classroom and play facilities. With arts being such an important part of our curriculum we are currently exploring the possibility of a performing arts centre on site. “Visitors are always welcome and I look forward to meeting many new families in the future. Christepher Hald takes up the position of head at Sheffield High Infant and Junior School in September.

C

hristepher Hald will take up the position of Head of the Infant and Junior School at Sheffield High School for Girls from September 2016. He is currently working alongside the existing head, Anne Jones, who will retire in July 2016. Chris recently moved to Sheffield from Cambridge where he was Head of Juniors at St Mary’s School, an all-girls independent school. During his career, Chris has worked predominantly in the independent sector throughout the UK including at schools in Derbyshire,Yorkshire and Guernsey in the Channel Islands. “Being in the teaching profession and being the head of such a dynamic school as ours is the most rewarding thing you can imagine. “A typical day starts with assembly, which presents a super opportunity for the whole school to gather together. Then, I will often show prospective parents around the school, meet with colleagues or go on a learning walk.

WESTSIDE 110

New addition This is the educational term for walking around the school and going into the classrooms to see and hear about what the girls are learning. It is a brilliant way to get an impression of the activities, level and skills being explored in lessons. It also gives me a chance to meet the girls. I do teach occasionally (my background is in science), with the remaining part of the day occupied with emails, correspondence, meetings and the normal routines of a very thriving, busy school. “I have a keen interest in pastoral care and the development of what is often referred to as soft skills. When you explore this more closely (and understand that we are talking about resilience, determination, self-belief and compassion as well as good communication and respect), these are essential life skills. Although I have only just moved to Sheffield High School I am really excited about being able to introduce some of my ideas into both the Infant and Junior Schools. “Interaction with pupils is the most enjoyable and rewarding aspect of this job. To

see the girls’ love of learning and investigation come to fruition is brilliant! I very much enjoy working alongside our parents and colleagues in providing such a sound, vibrant education – from both the academic and pastoral point of view, as is provided at Sheffield High School. “I am also very excited about being part of the Girls’ Day School Trust and look forward to becoming more involved in this organisation. On a personal note, I am also thrilled to be in Sheffield and look forward to reacquainting myself with South Yorkshire, having lived here 25 years ago.” Sheffield High Infant and Junior School 5 Melbourne Avenue, Sheffield, S10 2QH Infant and Junior School Open Mornings: Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October 2016 For further details please call the Admissions Secretary on 0114 358 7602. www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

Just rewards

Developing children for life is just part of of John Hicks’ role at Westbourne School and Pre-School.

J

ohn Hicks has been at Westbourne School for 12 years, during which time, he has seen many advancements; both in terms of facilities and Westbourne’s reputation as being the top private coeducational school in the area that caters for children from the age of three right through to 16. Westbourne believes that a system where girls and boys grow up together is best because they learn to communicate more effectively with each other. “Preparing children to be with peers of the opposite sex teaches them about respect, diplomacy, the understanding of equality and democracy and essentially that men and women can work harmoniously together. “Schools should develop children for life and not just focus on the academics. We believe that we offer a holistic education, which delivers a calm focused atmosphere that allows children to deepen their academic learning.

“I have seen the school go from strength to strength, particularly in academic achievement. Our more able pupils regularly achieve places at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge and those with more modest abilities often make huge progress. I am proud that the school is regarded as unique and one of the best in the region. “One of the most rewarding elements of this role is seeing the children develop in confidence and sharing in their progress and success both personally and academically. I also love teaching and being involved in music and sport and I especially enjoy meeting prospective parents and I am proud to show them around our school. “As more and more people have discovered, the excellent all-round education that today’s Westbourne offers, means that demand for places has increased dramatically. I am delighted to have been closely involved in the acquisition of three new buildings (and we have further plans for expansion) and a

thriving new Pre-School to accommodate the growing Westbourne population. “We are very close to a two form entry throughout the whole of Junior School and I look forward to seeing this to fruition. Plans as always, include the continued enhancement of pupil achievement in academia/sport/drama and music. My ambition is to build on the strong reputation of the school making us the school of choice in our area.” Westbourne School and Pre-School 60 Westbourne Road, Broomhill, Sheffield, S10 2QT

Hearts and minds Nic Boys, headteacher at Barlborough Hall School, takes great pride in helping to form well-rounded individuals.

B

arlborough Hall School and Nursery is a co-educational preparatory school in the Jesuit tradition, welcoming children of all denominations from rising threes to 11-year-olds in Elements 1 (Year 6). Nic Boys has been the headteacher for three years. “No two days are the same. At different times I am called upon to act as friend, mentor, counsellor, physician, CEO, teacher and parent. I have an open door policy that ensures I am available to the staff, children and parents of our community. “My working day includes staff meetings, either for our own campus or our senior school Mount St Mary’s College. Running school assemblies and ensuring effective communication between the school and parent body are all part of the post. “Above all, my working day involves the

pursuit of excellence in all that we do, to ensure that the school continues to move from strength to strength. “There is no more rewarding or noble action, than to help another individual on their own life journey. I am privileged to be able to help form the hearts and minds of our pupils. Today’s student is tomorrow’s doctor that cures cancer, or the next man on the moon – to educate the young is to transform the world. “Children love coming to Barlborough Hall School, from nursery upwards. We have recently redeveloped our already ‘outstanding’ term-time nursery to deliver an all-year round provision. The school has invested in a new synthetic grass covered, outdoor playground, which has greatly enhanced our Early Years facilities. “The re-modelling of the interior layout has helped us continue to deliver the

stimulating enhanced educational experience our Early Years setting is known for, involving swimming, French, music, ICT, baking, PE and welly walks around our beautiful 330-acre grounds. “The launch of our nursery from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday through Friday, for 51 weeks of the year, has provided greater flexibility for working parents. “For anyone interested in seeing what we have to offer, I would love to invite you to come in and have a look around the school. Call 01246 810511 to make an appointment.” Barlborough Hall School Park Street, Barlborough, Chesterfield, S43 4ES

Constantly evolving Peter Phillips, Head at S. Anselm’s School in Bakewell, continues to oversee many improvements.

S

. Anselm’s School is a full boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 3-13. Its recently opened College offers a superlative day only GCSE education. Peter Philips has been the Headmaster since 2012. “I enjoy watching them develop, growing with confidence and becoming inquisitive and excited about life. Their energy, creativity and enthusiasm never fail to amaze. “I also enjoy the strategic aspect of my job as CEO of a large organisation employing over 70 people locally in Bakewell – having a vision for the school and how it fits in the future landscape of education in Derbyshire and Sheffield is very exciting. “I try to have breakfast with the boarders as often as possible. I teach English for 16 lessons a week and also do some Learning Support teaching. “I have an open door policy so children can come and see me if they have something important they wish to share. I have supper

with the boarders and then will see many of them in the evenings to discuss what is important to them.” Sport is a big aspect of the school and the children pride themselves in their highperforming teams. “I attend as many matches as possible which can mean travelling to Shrewsbury or Brighton. We have recently been granted planning permission for an astroturf at the school, which will be the only one in the area. “This will enable our sports department to coach the children more effectively for hockey, football and tennis – they already do a marvellous job so I can’t wait to see what they will achieve then. “We are looking forward to opening our Innovation Centre in September 2016 with 3D printers, Lego and computers to drive our commitment to creative learning, teaching the children to programme and enabling them to

recognise and achieve their potential. “Our new College, which opened in September 2015, goes from strength to strength with more pupils signing up and our first cohort starting their GCSE syllabi next term. The variety of activities they undertake and personal attention they receive are quite exceptional.” S. Anselm’s School Stanedge Road, Bakewell DE45 1DP

Wraps come off the new Clio RS16 flier Unveiled at the Monaco Grand Prix, this Clio RS16 is likely to be the fastest road car the French firm has ever built. Under the bonnet lies the 271hp 2.0-litre pedal-pusher from the Megane 275 Trophy R, instead of the 197hp 1.6-litre turbo in the standard RS Clio. There’s also a new six-speed manual gearbox whihc replaces the six-speed paddle shifter which enthusiasts will no doubt be ecstatic about. Other additions include a 60mm wider body kit, adjustable Ohlins dampers, a pair of bucket seats with six-point harnesses, trackbiased tyres, suspension components from the Clio R3T rally car and the rear wing from the Clio Cup racecar. Expect prices to be north of £30,000 with very limited production numbers.

New 2008 aims to heighten your senses

Peugeot is its all-new 3008, the French firm’s most advanced compact SUV to date. As with all new models these days, the latest 3008 is larger, safer, more luxurious, more economical and lighter than the previous model – about 100kg lighter in fact. Inside there’s a host of advanced technology to keep you entertained: there’s a 3D satellite navigation system with TomTom® Traffic which takes into account the contours of the earth, a Mirror Screen function for your Smartphone and a feature called i-Cockpit® which supposedly heightens your senses for a better driving experience. There’ll be two petrol engines and four diesels available for the 3008. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but order books open from November.

Suzuki Baleno takes the middle road Suzuki has created an all-new hatchback. It’s called the Baleno and it’s built for people who want a car larger than a Suzuki Swift but don’t want the added bulkiness of the S-Cross or Vitara. Priced from £12,999, the Baleno will come with a 109hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol or a four-cylinder 1.2litre petrol unit with a mild hybrid set-up. Standard equipment is very generous and includes 16-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, air conditioning, satellite navigation, DAB Radio with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, rear privacy glass, cruise control with speed limiter and front electric windows. Optional equipment includes automatic climate control, rear electric windows, a 4.2-inch central colour trip display, LED rear lights, Adaptive Cruise Control and Radar Brake Support.

Mazda’s MX-5 takes a drop of the hard stuff Introducing the new Mazda MX-5 RF. The RF stands for Retractable Roof. In essence, the RF is just the hard-top edition of the regular MX-5. Unlike the ordinary MX-5, which is a traditional convertible, the RF is what we call a Spyder – the opening of the roof is a little smaller than on your traditional convertible. Mazda’s reasoning for this is they ‘wanted to try something new’. It’s slightly taller than the ordinary MX-5 – only by 5mm – this means it won’t be as great in the handling department, and because it’s a hard top, it’ll be heavier too. Thanks to this roof though, it’ll be quieter and more refined. Prices have yet to be announced. On sale in 2017.
