“Lovely family firm, all the staff both in the office (especially Lauren), and the workmen that did the work were easy to deal with and dealt with queries quickly. Leah designed a lovely kitchen and utility with everything we wanted and nothing we did not want. She made some suggestions we had not thought of and it looks great and is very much user friendly.” ~ Dee Cavanagh S17 “Excellent service, excellent staff and AMAZING kitchen! My husband and I are so chuffed with our new kitchen/diner. We had 2 walls knocked through, a new wall and door built and a new kitchen installed. PROPERTY
Survey or valuation? YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD OF SURVEYS AND VALUATIONS, BUT WHAT ARE THEY AND WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED? ouse surveys and valuations are frequently confused, but they’re actually very different. There are specific circumstances when you’d require one or the other.
H
What’s the difference between a survey and a valuation? A property survey is an assessment of the condition of a property. There are several kinds with varying levels of detail, but the main two are the HomeBuyer Report (Level 2 Survey) and Building Survey (Level 3 Survey), both of which are defined and regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). The purpose of a property survey is to flag up any issues, or potential issues, in a property before you buy it. The contents of the survey will vary depending on the type you get, but it will look at things like building structure, the presence of issues like damp or pests, and information on the local environment, such as drainage. A property survey is carried out by a qualified Buidling Surveyor. A property valuation is an expert 10 www.sheffieldvibe.com
assessment on the value of a property. Whilst it will briefly consider the condition, it will mainly focus on the location, size and characteristics of the property. The report will solely be about giving an estimate of how much it is worth. Property valuations can be carried out by an estate agent, but they have a tendency to inflate the figure, so it’s best to hire a qualified surveyor. It’s important to note that a property valuation is not the same thing as a mortgage lender’s valuation. A property valuation is a relatively in-depth report about a property’s worth and the factors that determine it, whilst a mortgage valuation is a brief inspection that a mortgage lender carries out to check a property is worth what a buyer is going to pay for it.
When would I need a survey? House surveys are a vital part of the buying process. In England you get a survey on a property you want to buy, after you’ve made an offer but before you’ve exchanged contracts. This way you can get expert advice on the
condition of your potential new home. Sometimes problems can be severe but not easy to spot, so it’s good to be aware of them so you can either back out of the sale or renegotiate the price accordingly.
When would I need a valuation? You’ll need a valuation whenever you need to know the up-to-date market value of a property. There are a number of situations this might be, for example: • You bought a property with the help of a Help to Buy loan and you’re looking to repay the loan, remortgage or sell the property • You own a Shared Ownership property and you want to buy a larger portion of it (staircasing) • You’re going through a divorce and the shared property is part of the settlement • You’re the executor of someone’s will and their assets include property Valuations are also sometimes included within property surveys when you’re buying a property, but you wouldn’t usually pay for one specifically at this point.

PROPERTY
What is a HomeBuyer Report (Level 2 Survey)? A HomeBuyer Report (otherwise known as the Level 2 RICS Survey) is the most common survey and is used to find and document any problems in a property that could cause damage and need future repairs, such as damp or subsidence. A HomeBuyer Report is carried out on homes that are in a reasonable condition and only checks for easily visible problems. The HomeBuyer Report will not detail every single aspect of the building, but it can reveal issues that might impact the value of the property and need further investigation. It will include all major sections of a property that are visible to the surveyor, so they will not lift up floors or carpets and wiring will not be included. If you have a property that is in need of renovation or that you intend to alter, it is recommended that you choose the more comprehensive Building Survey (Level 3 Survey) instead of a Homebuyer Report.
What is included in a HomeBuyer Report? • Background information on the property and location • An estimate for the cost of re-building the property for insurance purpose • An assessment of any damp-proofing, drainage or insulation in the building (although drains are not tested)
• Condition of the building’s timbers and checking woodworm or rot • Damp test results taken from the walls • Details of urgent problems which should receive specialist attention before signing a contract • Details of major faults in easy to get to parts of the property that may affect its value The HomeBuyer Report is easily understood - written in plain English rather than technical jargon.
with you over the phone after you’ve received your report - so if you do have follow-up questions, that would be the time to ask. Some of the most common things you might want to investigate are: • Electrics • Issues with the roofing • Central heating • Damp • Structural problems which may need an engineer
Condition Ratings
If you find any of these issues you may need to take further action, such as: • Ask the surveyor how much it might cost to fix these issues • Get a quote from a builder/ professional for major works • Renegotiate the asking price or ask the seller to fix the issues before you complete on the sale
The RICS HomeBuyer Report has 3 condition ratings to evaluate and describe the condition of the property and how urgently it needs repairing. The conditions are defined by RICS as: • Condition Rating 1 – no repair currently needed • Condition Rating 2 – defects that need repairing or replacing but are not considered to be serious or urgent • Condition Rating 3 – defects that are serious and/or need to be repaired, replaced or investigated urgently
What happens if your survey finds a problem? Most surveys will find some sort of issue, especially with older properties. If you have any concerns you can highlight these with the surveyor before they carry out the inspection. Most surveyors are usually happy to talk through the report
The cost of a HomeBuyer Report A HomeBuyer Report is well suited for newer properties which are in a fairly good condition. The average cost of a HomeBuyer Report starts from £400. You can save money on the cost of a HomeBuyer Report by looking around and comparing quotes from different local surveyors. The reservoir above Shepherd’s Wheel 24 www.sheffieldvibe.com
The suburb is popular amongst middle-aged people and families in particular with the suburb being home to a number of brilliant primary schools, and plenty of secondary schools are nearby. Fulwood is located at one of city’s highest points, and from certain spots in the area, you can get a brilliant view of the whole city and views of open green space can be seen from your windows, giving residents a unique and much quieter city life.
What’s there? Both Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road have all of the conveniences you will need on your doorstep. The roads have a number of five-star cafes, restaurants and hairdressers and even have a pharmacy, podiatrist, and florist as well as a couple of independent shops. Just a five-minute walk away is the closest doctor’s surgery and a convenience store, and just an 11-minute
walk away is the nearest food shop and the area offers plenty of great transport links and safe walks to almost every part of the city, but what is even better than this is the vast range of activities that Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road have to offer.
Things to do: As well as having the excitement of living close to Sheffield’s city centre, the two roads are surrounded by an abundance of activities for all of the family. Whether you are a sportsperson or you enjoy history and culture, Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road are only minutes away from it all. If you are looking for some inspiration of activities to do now that the lockdown is gradually lifting, or for some socially distanced activities that get you out of the house, a list of nearby things to do that Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road have to offer can be read below.

OAKBROOK ROAD
Forge Dam
Bingham Park and Whiteley Woods
Houses on Oakbrook Road have a stunning view of the green space next door to them - Bingham Park and Whitley Woods, located alongside the Porter Brook River. The park is sat on the top of a hill which gives walkers the perfect view of the surrounding areas, including Ranmoor’s St John’s Church, a grade II-listed building with a past that holds a tragic story for those who are interested in history. The park has recently refurbished tennis courts, which can be hired for 55 minutes for just £6, as well as a netball and basketball court. There is a court suitable for use with skateboards and bikes, a bowling green and it even as an AstroTurf area with goal posts to play football making Bingham Park the perfect spot for all kinds of sportspeople. Joined onto Bingham Park is Whiteley Woods, a lovely place for a picnic, walk, run, or cycle with the path taking you through a woodland and along the Porter Brook river. Forge Dam
Walk through Whiteley Woods towards Fulwood and you’ll happen upon Forge Dam, a popular destination for families and walkers. It provides a beautiful place to stop for a break to admire the views or to enjoy a drink or something to eat from the cafe. There is also a children’s
playground with a much talked about slide built into the hillside. The dam itself is silting up very quickly and a restoration project is underway to remove the silt, reduce the size of the island and install a submerged wall which will prevent the dam from silting up again. All this work is being led by the Friends of the Porter Valley group. Shepherd Wheel Museum
Set within the picturesque valley of the Porter Brook and next to parks and woodlands is the Shepherd Wheel museum, a fantastic and working example of the Sheffield knife grinding industry, holding some of Sheffield’s steel work history, and contributing to Sheffield’s nickname ‘the steel city’. Shepherd Wheel makes a great morning or afternoon out of anyone, with it being packed full of history and having a stunning location, even the kids will love it with the water simulation in the museum’s courtyard and plenty of outdoor space to run around in, why not stop by after your walk along the Porter Brook to Whiteley Woods or before you go further afield and continue following the river down to Endcliffe Park.
is home to three reservoirs and has a popular walking route which passes through woodland. This is the best and closest spot for people living on Ranmoor and Fulwood who like wildlife with many people who have visited the area mentioning the numbers of wild birds and waders here. This walk is one of many free reservoir walks based in the Peak District and made accessible by Yorkshire Water. Only a few more minutes away is more of the peak district’s walks which guarantee you walks that can suit any ability from a gentle stroll to an adventurous scramble. Yorkshire Water has made the free walking routes downloadable on their website. If you have children, or are planning to start a family, are an avid sportsperson, or just love the outdoors, the suburb is a fantastic place to live, and it is all thanks to its convenient and stunning location.

Time for change SIMON LEE CALLS FOR A MORE DOGMATIC APPROACH TO BUYING AND SELLING PROPERTY. s Sheffield the hardest place to buy a house in the country? Simon Lee seems to think so. As managing director of Evans Lee Sales & Lettings, based on Oakbrook Road, he knows just how difficult it is for buyers to get a foothold in the area, particularly in the south-west of the city. “We all know it’s a seller’s market,” proclaims Simon. “High demand coupled with low supply of properties has led to an inflation in prices that is making it increasingly difficult to conclude a sale. It’s not good for anyone at the minute.” So what’s the answer? Simon strongly believes that more transparency is needed from all estate agencies alongside a more realistic valuation of properties. “At the minute, buying a house is not a very nice experience,” he explains. “Many properties are being undervalued to drive a huge amount of interest but that can be counterproductive. If you’re a seller, do you realistically want 40, 50, 60 viewings of your property? If you’re a buyer, do you want to pursue a property that has that much competition? “It’s created a perfect storm that’s driving up prices far beyond the asking price. Surely it makes more sense to have 8-10 viewings but ones who have more realistic expectations of what the final price will be?” Evans Lee are a pro-active, straight-

talking, friendly, family-owned business with a dedicated team who place a firm emphasis on transparency and quality of service. You’ll deal with the same person throughout your buying or selling process and the teamstaff are on hand seven days a week to keep you updated. It’s this face-to-face, personal service that has seen them go from strength to strength since opening in 2013. “We price houses at a value our clients are happy to sell at,” says Simon. “If you price sensibly, anything else is a bonus. The vendors are happy because they’ve got the price they want and buyers are happy because they know they’ve paid a realistic, rather than an inflated, price. Everyone knows where they stand from the off.” Keen pricing is also important when it comes to satisfying your mortgage lender. Inflated prices can lead to problems further down the line if a lender, in turn, undervalues a property. This can lead to a
sale falling through altogether or a buyer being forced to find extra cash to conclude. It’s something that can’t be sustained indefinitely. “We already have the government and media talking about a recession later this year so it’s inevitable that demand will slow down,” opines Simon. “We also have to take into account rising inflation and the cost of living. All these factors will come into play.” So, does Simon have any other advice for would-be buyers or sellers? “All I’d say is do some market research before choosing an estate agent,” he adds. “Read the reviews. It’s a simple enough question but does someone answer the phone when you ring the office? Our value comes from our quality of service. We want to make house buying a more pleasant experience.” Amen to that. Evans Lee 217 Oakbrook Road, Sheffield, S11 7EB Tel: 0114 230 9644 www.evanslee.co.uk

Donation boosts Emmaus Sheffield craft project Sheffield hand tool manufacturer Woodware Repetitions is supporting city homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield in its latest fundraising venture. Emmaus Sheffield is the working community with quality, self-contained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its Social Enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. The companions have recently launched their own handcrafted range of bespoke household items that also fit in perfectly with the Emmaus ethos of sustainability and recycling. And Woodware Repetitions are providing off cuts of high quality wood, which the companions are transforming into household items. Woodware Repetitions, part of Mowbray Manufacturing Co Ltd, specialises in the manufacture of hand tool handles, including turning tool handles, file handles, chisel handles and knife handles, many of which are used by associate company George Barnsley and Sons. “Thanks to the team at Woodware Repetitions, we now have a great quality supply of wood to keep this valuable new income stream going,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. “The fact that the company uses ethically sourced materials blends perfectly with our own approach to sustainability.” To find out more about Emmaus Sheffield, visit www.emmaus-sheffield.org.uk
Lost Chord looking for new trustees Leading South Yorkshire dementia charity Lost Chord is looking for three new trustees. Lost Chord is the charity that provides vital interactive musical experiences for people living with dementia in care homes and day centres both across the region and nationally. There are currently vacancies for trustees who have legal and financial backgrounds as well as somebody with knowledge of care homes. “Ideally, we would be looking for a solicitor and an accountant to join us as we take Lost Chord in exciting new directions,” said the charity’s Chief Executive, Clare Langan. “We are also looking for somebody who has a good knowledge of care home management. “This is not an onerous commitment with meetings just six to eight times in the year, but their support will prove invaluable as we explore great new ways to expand our services and take our music out to the people who need it most.” Anybody interested in applying for any of the three roles should contact Clare on 07915 075047. 30 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Night Strider 2022 The St Luke’s Hospice 50th anniversary celebrations will reach their climax with Night Strider 2022. Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that this year aims to raise more than £100,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. The 2019 challenge - the last before the Covid-19 pandemic put Night Strider on hold for two years - saw more than 1,000 fully illuminated St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening. Now booking is open and already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2022, which makes its return on 8 October and promises to be the biggest and best Night Strider yet! Starting out from Sheffield’s Peace Gardens, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and Abbeydale before heading back to the city centre finish line. With no running involved, there’s plenty of time to take in the city’s best known views by moonlight as walkers embark on their twilight challenge. Either a full half marathon distance or a shorter 10k route, Night Strider is open to everybody over the age of ten though participants aged ten to 17 must be registered and accompanied by another participant aged 18 or over - and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Another Sheffield first for STOS Theatre Company
Jean and Betty share ribbon cutting duties
STOS Theatre Company returns to Sheffield’s Lyceum this autumn with another Sheffield premiere. The company that brought such acclaimed musical premiers as White Christmas, Made in Dagenham, Shrek and Elf to the city now returns with Sunshine on Leith, the critically acclaimed musical based around the hits of Scottish pop siblings The Proclaimers. It’s the story of servicemen Davy and Ally, returning from war to find their way back into civilian life in their home city of Edinburgh. Their journey through life and love is set to the timeless songs of the much-loved Proclaimers, including I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), Letter from America and the title song, Sunshine on Leith. Sunshine on Leith started on stage with Dundee Rep in 2007 and went on to be named the TMA Best Musical of the Year. A film version followed in 2013, directed by Dexter Fletcher - the man behind Oscar winners Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman - and starring Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan. This premier production for Sheffield, directed by Mark Harris and choreographed by Claire Harriott, with musical direction by Tom Owen - the team behind the hugely popular STOS productions of Broadway classics My Fair Lady and Gypsy - runs at the Lyceum from 15-19 November. For more information about STOS visit stos.org.uk
There were two very special guests of honour as Sheffield’s newest residential care home officially opened its doors. Valley Wood Residential Care Home, in Cat Lane, Heeley, is a specialist dementia care home operated by city charity Sheffcare. It replace of two of Sheffcare’s oldest properties, the nearby Paddock Hill and Castelayn. And as staff, family and friends celebrated the home’s official launch, there was red carpet treatment for residents Jean Harris and Betty Mellor, who performed joint ribboncutting duties. “Castelayn and Paddock Hill both date back to the early 1960s and are part of an increasingly aged stock inherited by Sheffcare when we took them over from local authority control,” said the charity’s Chief Executive, Claire Rintoul. “We decided to close both sites as Valley Wood offers all ensuite facilities and a much higher standard of accommodation, particularly following our extensive programme of improvement and refurbishment. “Both Castelayn and Paddock Hill have been extremely popular through several generations but looking to the future we have to ensure we have properties that are fit for purpose. “We believe that Valley Wood offers the best possible facilities as we move into the future. “This is an exciting time for us and we we delighted that our families and friends were able to join us on this next stage of the Sheffcare story.”

David Howlett, the farm manager on the Chatsworth Estate says: “As farm manager here on the Chatsworth Estate for over eight years, I know just how incredible the wool from our 2500 strong flock of beautiful sheep, who graze openly in parkland across the estate, is. The downs-type fleece is perfect to use in bedding due to the length and thickness of the wool fibres and we’re really pleased to be working with Chris and the team at Woolroom on this new Chatsworth collection wool bedding.” The collection features all the very
best benefits of Woolroom bedding in delivering 25 per cent deeper, more regenerative sleep than any other fibre type: the bedding is also temperature regulating, naturally hypoallergenic, machine washable and proven to deliver the very best, natural night’s clean sleep. Founded in 2008, Woolroom is the UK’s leading wool bedding specialist and has developed a reputation for being the go-to retailer for a better night’s ‘clean’ sleep, owing to its temperature regulating, hypoallergenic and chemicalfree properties. With every purchase from the Chatsworth Collection you will receive a 30 Night Sleep Trial, and for bedding sets, you will receive a 60 Night Sleep Trial. Power to the people FIVE GENERATIONS OF THE WILLIAMS FAMILY HAVE BEEN PUTTING CUSTOMERS FIRST FOR 117 YEARS. illiams Electrical was established in 1905 by Walter Williams, the great-grandfather of current managing director Karen Putland, and has been in the heart of Woodseats ever since. With Karen’s daughter recently joining the business, the family business is now into its fifth generation and continues to evolve. It’s origins are somewhat different to what you’ll find at 783-787 Chesterfield Road today and the family have had their fair share of ups and downs in the 117 years that has preceded Williams’ inception. Having started out selling bicycles, radios and model railways the business quickly adapted by adding a car inspection pit and petrol pump in the rear of the building so they could repair Richardson cars, which were built in Sheffield during the war. The petrol pump was only removed in the 1970s but the now hidden car pit remains today. “As technology changed the same batteries that we used in bicycle lights were used in radios and so a new product line was added and our evolution began,” explains Karen. “Now we are proud to be the area’s leading independent specialist supplier of top brand electrical goods, aiming to offer the best value for money deals on the high street.”

Before we get on to the successes, Karen recalls some of the trials the business has faced over the years.
The Williams family circa 1954
“The war years were a challenge for everyone, and then we had the three-day working week of the seventies when we had to trade with candles and in near darkness because of the blackouts,” she says. “The financial crisis of 2008 was a challenging time and changed the retail landscape permanently and then came the pandemic… “Just like the other difficult times we changed to adapt and traded throughout, providing necessary deliveries to the NHS and all our customers who needed essential household appliances such as

cookers, washers and fridge freezers. “With doors closed we strove to support our community in any way we could, changing our practices to ensure we could be there to support and help safely.” If anything, the last couple of years has shown the importance of community and of shopping local – and Williams have reaped the benefits. The closure of a certain city centre department store had a big impact too. “For a lot of people, their default was always John Lewis,” comments Karen. “Now people have realised they can get everything they need - and more - by shopping locally and we’re not ashamed to say that we offer much better service too.” Excellent customer service is at the heart of everything Williams Electrical do, a sentiment echoed by Karen. “Being a family business customer service is at our very core. We care about our customers and pride ourselves on the service we offer,” she said. “We listen and our personal approach is what makes us different to most large national retailers. You can visit our shop to speak with our experienced staff or give us a call (no call centres) to discuss any of our products you might be interested in or for help and support with any product you may have purchased.” Check out their customer reviews on Google and Trustpilot and you can’t fail to be impressed with the levels of service they offer. Williams Electrical is proudly independent but as part of Europe’s largest buying group, Euronics, has access to a huge range of top brand electricals at competitive prices, including those from Samsung, Sony, LG, Bosch, Neff, Siemens, AEG, Smeg, and many others. Loyal, long-standing staff are experienced and knowledgeable in the products they sell. “If you are interested in seeing the latest technology from OLED and 4K Ultra High Definition TVs to the latest music streaming and audio systems, our sales team offer instore demonstrations as well and putting your choice of TV and sound bar or audio system together for you to experience before you buy,” adds Karen. “We have a huge range of white goods, including washing machines, tumble dryers, fridge freezers and cookers and built-in appliances, for which we offer a complete installation service. All this is complemented by
vacuum cleaners, microwaves and small household appliances.” Delivery is readily available and Williams offer a bespoke installation service, from a simple TV wall mount to a complete multi-room entertainment system. The offer a recycling service too as well as rental options should you wish spread the cost of any purchase. And the service from Williams Electrical doesn’t stop there, they also have proud links with the community and are currently sponsoring many local football teams as well as supporting Sheffield FC in their bid to move to a new purposebuilt stadium at Meadowhead. They also partnered with Woodseats Medical and Dr Datchler to provide a fully-accessible, 24hour powered defibrillator to the community in 2019. estival season returns in earnest this year. After two years of Covid-affected events, 2022 should see a big return to normality – as much as it can – which is great news for music fans. Glastonbury’s back, Leeds and Reading will be going ahead again but while the ‘big’ festivals may grab the headlines, you’ll struggle to find a better value-for-money line-up than at Sheffield’s Tramlines. Sam Fender, Kasabian and Madness take the top slots on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively and will be joined by the likes of James, The Vaccines, Sigrid, Self-Esteem, The Wombats and Becky Hill. And there’s more. Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival recently announced its latest additions to the lineup – and it looks like festival-goers are in for a treat. Joining the headliners at the already sold-out event in Hillsborough Park will be Bad Boy Chiller Crew, Lady Leshurr, Alfie Templeman and Kelis. They’ll be joined by Crawlers, Bleach Lab, Baby Queen, The Clockworks and Elvana. Comedy will also be making a return to the festival, which takes place between 22-24 July, with a huge line-up including headliners Jason Manford, Russell Kane and Seann Walsh. Timm Cleasby, Tramlines operations director, said: “After the amazing spirit that everyone brought to Tramlines 2021 and how the team delivered an amazing festival in challenging times, we’re all back working hard to make 2022 better than ever. I honestly can’t wait to be back in the park and having a blast with Sheffield again. “There are so many great bands on the 2022 lineup. Those I’m really looking forward to catching are Sigrid, Kasabian, The Coral, Orla Gartland and James, and there’s some great Sheffield artists that I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a

while too, the amazing Self Esteem, the return of Little Man Tate and our friends, Reverend and The Makers to name a few. Then to finish off the party, Madness will be sending everyone dancing back to their house…Tramlines 2022 is gonna go off.” Headlining ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ on Friday night is Sam Fender with two Number 1 albums now under his belt. The newly formed but better than ever Kasabian take the lead on Saturday night, while Madness finally get to deliver a long-awaited set following the postponement of Tramlines in 2020 where they were originally due to headline. Other lineup highlights include James who will be bringing the most festivalready tracks from their 39-year long career; the frenetic five piece The Vaccines who’ll be dropping classics such as ‘Norgaard’ and ‘If You Wanna’; Americana/alt-rocker Jade Bird; the Norwegian pop sensation Sigrid; and the Mercury Prize-nominated Sports Team who make a triumphant return to Hillsborough Park following their appearance in 2019 - anyone recall Alex Rice’s crowd surfing in the Leadmill tent? Ever with its finger on the pulse of breaking talent, the Tramlines 2022 lineup shines a light on some of the most exciting new acts around.

These include the gritty indie-folk artist Orla Gartland who dropped her debut album ‘Women on the Internet’ this August; the melodic, indie-pop rising star Pixey who has just released her second EP on the influential Chess Club label; the guardian tipped ‘one to watch’ outfit Coach Party; and guitarist-singer Sam Ryder who shot to fame with his cover versions during the pandemic resulting in TikTok crowning his the most popular UK artist account of 2020. A Tramlines lineup wouldn’t be complete without a solid injection of Sheffield’s finest. For 2022, crowds can expect homegrown sets from Jon McClure’s Reverend and The Makers; Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor formerly of Slow Club); Little Man Tate in their highly anticipated return since their farewell in 2009; and arguably one of most attended performances of the entire Tramlines weekend,The Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring the power house of parody, charm and sing-a-long vibes. Plenty of up and coming local acts have also been revealed including Bedroom High Club, Luxury Goods, Sheafs and August Charles. Bedroom

High Club are a 4-piece new age indie band who have become firm Tramlines favourites since debuting in 2019. Luxury Goods are the new incarnation of LIO and have just announced a Leadmill show in December whilst Sheafs are riding high following their debut EP ‘Vox Pop’ in 2020. August Charles is a fantastic new vocalist from Doncaster who made his Tramlines debut last year as a winner of the ‘Apply to Play’ competition. Tramlines has settled into its new home in Hillsborough Park - this will be the fourth event held there - and this year’s site will have five stages of music, a family-friendly area and a genrespanning line-up of performers including everyone from internationally-acclaimed acts to grass roots talent. 2022’s event - the 13th edition of Sheffield’s biggest party - takes place following an exceptional event in 2021, where the festival took place as part of the Government’s Event Research Programme. It was the largest festival in Western Europe to go ahead since lockdown restrictions were eased and

marked a national celebration of the return to live music. Comedy has become a mainstay of the festival and in 2022 Tramlines has secured some huge names kicking off with Seann Walsh who headlines on Friday. Seann is a multi-award winning performer with a growing list of TV credits including QI, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Juice and 8 out of 10 cats. Sean is joined on Friday by Scott Bennett, Michelle Shaughnessy, Alisdair Beckett-King,Vince Atta and host Danny McLoughlin. Saturday headliner Russell Kane is a UK household name due to numerous TV appearances as a guest and as a presenter of his own shows including 2016 travel doc Stupid Man - Smart Phone. Joining Russell on Saturday are Tom Ward, Karen Bayley, Harry Stachini,
Jack Gleadow and host Matt Read. The Sunday showcase is headlined by Jason Manford, well known due his tenure as team leader on 8 out of 10 cats, his numerous presenting roles and his appearances in West End musicals such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Producers and Sweeney Todd. Also appearing on Sunday are Ivan Brackenberry, Lily Philips and host Emmanuel Sonubi who has been hotly tipped by both Jason Manford and Russell Kane. “I’m beyond excited for Tramlines 2022,” added Timm Cleasby. “Our first announcement was ace, now this? You had me at Kelis and Elvana… the return of Lady Leshurr too, just mega. Add to that Jason Manford, Seann Walsh and Lily Philips and I’m gonna need more hours in my weekend.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 57

EATING OUT
The word is out... ZAAP HAS ARRIVED ON ECCLESALL ROAD – AND IT’S BUZZING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. ou’d expect a restaurant in as such a popular location as Ecclesall Road to be packed on weekends, but on a Monday night? Zaap may have only been open for just over a month but word, it seems, has travelled fast. There was barely a table - or tuk tuk - to be had when we visited. The restaurant promises to transport you to the street food markets of Bangkok and it certainly has that feel when you step through the door - neon lighting, funky tuk tuks, corrugated tin and beautiful street art adorn the ceilings and walls whilst the sweet and spicy aromas bombard the senses as friendly ‘Zaapsters’ hustle around the restaurant floor taking their orders and serving dishes. The open kitchen affords customers an opportunity to glimpse the busy Thai chefs weaving their magic. Head chef and owner, Ban Kaewkraikhot, created the chain after moving to Yorkshire from Bangkok. Since opening the first branch in Leeds she has now added more in Nottingham, Newcastle and York with Sheffield being the latest addition. From the outside, this may look a place for the young and trendy – with Zaap’s bright red logo splashed across every window and door. However, don’t be put off – whatever your age.
Y
60 www.sheffieldvibe.com
The menu - both food and drink - is huge. The former has over 80 dishes but in true street food style, service is speedy. We started with drinks; a Thai Singha beer for me (£5.25, pint) and a boozy bubble tea for my wife - a speciality at Zaap. Her fruity and refreshing Tarsier Kumquat (£7.50) contained a blend of kumquat fruit tea, Tarsier gin, lime, sugar and pineapple jelly. Thai food is traditionally served altogether – there are no strict starters or main courses – with a firm emphasis on sharing. A Bangkok Platter (£14) was the epitome of this and contained Zaap’s best selection of five popular street nibbles - steamed pork and prawn dumplings, crispy wonton stuffed with chicken and prawn, chicken satay, chicken gyoza and Thai fish cakes. Everything was cooked beautifully and the different flavours and textures were really enhanced by three dipping sauces of sweet chilli, tamarind and peanut. We also shared a Thai classic, Pad Thai Bo Ran (£11.45) which we chose to be served with king prawns. The familiar mix of stir-fried noodles, egg, spring onion, tofu and peanuts was everything you would expect with the flavours of soy and fish sauce giving it that distinct taste. Gai Tod Prik Gang (£11.95) was advertised with a three-chilli rating but
was just the right side of hot for me. The tangy, spicy red sauce was just delicious and worked really with the deep-fried crispy chicken, peppers and accompanying jasmine rice. We finished with Glouy Tod (£4.25) deep fried sliced banana with vanilla ice cream - on the recommendation of our Zaapster and a jasmine tea (£1.75). There’s so much more to discover at Zaap Thai, from bao buns and dim sum to salads and curries as well as some traditional Thai dishes including pork ear salad and chicken feet soup. Given that we stuck to more familiar dishes I think I’ll hang fire on those latter ones for now but a return visit will definitely be on the cards. There are no bookings so it can be a case of ‘walk-in and wait’, as many diners seemed to be doing on this very busy Monday night. It’s definitely worth it. Zaap 521-523 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, S11 8PR Tel: 0114 395 1699 www.zaapthai.co.uk

A fitting feast SUNDAY LUNCH AT BARLOW WOODSEATS HALL IS A MAJESTIC AFFAIR, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. s far as restaurant welcomes go, it’s right up there with the best. It’s not very often you turn up for Sunday lunch and be greeted by a peacock, but that’s exactly what happened on our recent visit to Barlow Woodseats Hall. Perched atop a barrel at the side of entrance was the most splendid creature you’ve ever set eyes on, shining bright blue in the sunshine and looking every inch as majestic as you can imagine. Apparently the sight of peacock is as not as uncommon as you might think at the Derbyshire venue; there’s several roaming the grounds and we even spotted a peahen too. All in all, it got our visit off to the best possible start. Barlow Woodseats Hall, which dates back to 1530, is traditionally known as a wedding and events venue but also opens on Friday evenings for tapas and Sundays for lunch. Indeed on the day of our visit, the floral remnants of the previous day’s wedding were evident whilst the tables and chairs had a distinct wedding feel. It makes Sunday lunch much more of an occasion. Sunday lunch is served inside the tudor barn, complete with its beautiful timber cruck arches and stone walls.
A

There’s a well stocked bar at the entrance as well as a small mezzanine area just above. Once served with drinks – a Black Sheep bitter (£4.20) for me, large Merlot (£6.60) for my wife and J20 for my children (£2.50) – we took our seats at our grand table and awaited our lunch. The traditional Sunday roast at Barlow Woodseats Hall is served as a three-meat platter (£25pp) and accompaniments and laid out on the table for everyone to share. It’s a great way to eat, particularly for large parties or those fussy eaters who can just indulge in everything they like and minimise waste. Our platter came with blushing slices of roast beef, breast and leg of chicken and slices of roast pork, all cooked beautifully. It was dressed with pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and shards of crisp crackling. Also brought to the table were the ‘best’ roast potatoes (they were), cheese covered leeks, and roast parsnips and carrots. It was a feast fitting for such a venue - credit goes to chef Lee Hawksworth and his team. There was far too much for the four of us to finish but the staff gratefully packaged up our leftovers, which we
enjoyed in a sandwich later that evening. Dessert is included in the set price and there was a choice of Eton mess, chocolate brownie, ice cream or a cheese platter. My wife and I opted for the Eton mess, a perfect combination of meringue, cream and summer fruits, whilst my children indulge their sweet tooths with a brownie (for him) and chocolate ice cream (for her). Barlow Woodseats Hall is a charming venue. It has all the majesty of a wedding venue but without the formality. Sunday lunch is a relaxed affair and made for sharing. If the sun is shining there are gardens to explore and plenty of outdoor seating too. Don‘t forget to look out for the peacocks. Welcome break IF YOU EXPLORE TOWSURE’S VAST HILLSBOROUGH STORE MAKE SURE YOU STOP AT THE NEW BASECAMP CAFE, WRITES ALISON HULLEY. he Towsure shop on Holme Lane in Malin Bridge sells everything you could need for camping, walking and outdoor recreation. Founded in 1967 by Stuart Hogg, it is an established and wellknown Sheffield business attracting customers from all over the region. It is perfectly situated near to the Malin Bridge tram stop and offers a large free car park. If you are planning a visit, or simply passing by, then why not make the most of your trip and check out the recently re-opened Basecamp Café inside. The cafe had been open for just three weeks on the day of our visit. It’s refurbished to a very high standard which has involved completely redesigning the kitchens, counters, interior décor and furnishings from scratch. Prior to the re-opening, the café had previously been owned and operated independently but now it is owned by Towsure. It is clear that a lot of thought and care has gone into the redevelopment of the café to keep with the outdoor theme of its retail host whilst offering a high-quality dining experience.

The Basecamp Café display board above the counter highlights the menu and current offers; it also displays nearby walking routes to give people ideas of local areas they can explore. Local walking groups are welcome to use the café as a meeting point and of course enjoy a well-deserved treat at the end of a good stroll. A discount is offered to those wishing to use reusable cups and a coffee loyalty scheme is to be introduced soon. We were pleasantly surprised by the extensive breakfast and lunch menu on offer. Head chef and café manager, Gary, seven days a week from 9am and 10am on a Sunday, whether it is breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake you will not be disappointed. Sunday lunches are served 12-3.30pm and are becoming a firm favourite having sold out the previous week. We ordered at the counter and then found a table where our drinks were served; a good-sized pot of tea and an Americano which was clearly made with excellent quality coffee. Our meals from the lunch menu (served 12-4pm) followed consisting of fish and chips served with mushy peas, tartare sauce
and a lemon wedge, and a Cajun chicken burger made from Cajun fried chicken fillet served with cheese, lettuce, tomato and gherkin on a toasted bun. The burger was served with hand cut chips and freshly made house coleslaw. The food was clearly cooked to order and the chips were nice and crispy with just the right amount of seasoning. After looking at the extensive cakes on display, many of which are homemade, we decided to share a piece of the homemade special edition Jubilee cheesecake to round off the meal. It had a perfectly crispy base and the topping was fluffy, light and fruity featuring whole blueberries inside. On the up and up AFTER 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS THERE’S NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN FOR THE GREEDY GREEK DELI. BY RICHARD ABBEY. ast month in Westside we put the spotlight on long-standing family businesses, those that have stood the test of time, triumphed over adversity and continue to go from strength to strength. One of the businesses we featured was the The Greedy Greek Deli, the Sharrow Vale Road stalwart that this year celebrates 20 years in business. It’s significant milestone for the Mouzakis family who arrived from Zante with the intention of brining authentic, traditional Greek food to Sheffield. The deli has become a firm favourite over the years and is testament to the hard work of husband and wife team Dennis and Helen. The deli has evolved over the years and offers much more than your takeaway gyros, souvlaki and salads and is now home to an upstairs restaurant as well as an outside catering service - The Deli Direct. Which all means there’s rarely a quiet moment at The Greedy Greek Deli. As we arrived on what we thought would be a quiet Monday evening the deli was already buzzing and Helen was putting the finishing touches to a birthday banquet that was getting ready to be delivered. After that there was just the small matter of their concession at the Sheffield Food Festival to organise as

well as Jubilee parties and an upcoming wedding. The restaurant offered something of a respite to all the hustle and bustle and was a pleasant space to spend an hour or two indulging in some fine Mediterranean food. Helen’s son Giannis was on hand to guide us through any questions about the menu, which is extensive. We started with a mini meze (£12.80), which was perfect for sharing and included stuffed chilli peppers, olives, sun dried tomatoes, stuffed vine leaves and feta cheese. It was a great introduction and whetted the appetite for what was to follow. My wife had a hankering for a traditional pork gyros (£7.65) and the Greedy Greek’s version is as good as you’ll find. The grilled pitta bread was full to bursting with spit roast pork, mixed salad, tzatziki and strofilia dip and was just delicious, all the flavours working tremendously in harmony. I opted for the soutzoukakia (£13), which were three huge and incredibly meaty beef meatballs cooked with tomato, onion, garlic and cumin. The robust flavours packed a real punch to make a real winner of a dish. We also shared a portion of lemon potatoes (£6), which I love and were a great accompaniment to the meatballs.
Quarters of pitta bread (£1.30) were great for mopping up the lemon and tomato sauces. Children are well catered for at The Greedy Greek Deli and my son’s chicken skewer, chips and salad (£6.80) would have satisfied even the largest of appetites. There’s no alcohol licence but there’s a good choice of soft drinks, waters, milkshakes and coffees. We drank cans of Pepsi and Tango Orange (£1.70). To finish, Giannis brought us bitesize pieces of baclava (£5.90) and karidopita (£5.90) - walnut and cinnamon cake which was served with a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream. It was a sweet and lovely way to end the meal. It’s easy to see why The Greedy Greek Deli is so popular - here’s to the next 20 years. The one and only CAN YOU IMAGINE ECCLESALL ROAD WITHOUT NONNAS? CHIARA BRUNO VISITS THE LEGENDARY VENUE. fter opening in 1996, Nonnas is one of Sheffield’s best loved Italian restaurants. Going from strength to strength, I think you’d agree that Ecclesall Road wouldn’t quite be the same without this iconic Italian restaurant at its heart. With echoes to its name (with nonna meaning grandma in Italian), Nonnas serves traditional Tuscan food with its own modern twist. As is the case with most Italians, family is important, and Nonnas is no different. From a wonderfully welcome atmosphere for all, to having a separate bambini menu, family matters. It was a lively Monday night when we were led to a prime table overlooking Ecclesall Road. Beginning our Nonnas experience, we ordered a large glass of red each; the Sicilian Nero d’Avola (£9.95) for my husband, and my absolute favourite, the Puglian Primitivo from Manduria for me (£11.25). Full bodied and rich, these wines made the ideal accompaniment to our meals. To begin, I chose the fritto misto (£9.50) and was bowled over by the
A
76 www.sheffieldvibe.com
quality of the light and airy tempurabattered fried fish, which consisted of succulent pieces of cod, strips of squid and prawns. Totally more-ish. My husband continued the fish theme with another favourite of ours; baby octopus. The polpo (£9.75) was cooked just right, perfectly grilled and served on a bed of lemon and herb couscous, complete with a citrusy coriander and lemon dressing. For a main, I chose pasta (a ‘must-do’ in an Italian restaurant) and opted for yet more fish with the linguine marinara in bianco (£15.50). The linguine were cooked perfectly al dente, whilst the white wine-steamed seafood were full of flavour, providing a welcome punch with a hint of chilli. My husband’s choice of the 10oz chargrilled Ribeye, or Manzo in Italian (£29.90), was wonderfully juicy and tender. It came with a Pesto dressing, crispy shallot rings and slow roasted tomatoes, complementing the steak and creating a true taste sensation. To end our night, I just had to go for the classic pick-me-up and order the
famous Nonnas Tiramisu (£8.50). Layers of sweet and creamy mascarpone, cocoa powder and coffee-soaked savoiardi biscuits made for a delectable dessert. My husband’s Limoncello mascarpone (£8.50) balanced its smooth and velvety cream with a crunch of white chocolate crumble and crushed pistachios, whilst the raspberries added a zingy freshness to the dish. If you’re looking for an Italian restaurant which serves excellent food, provides a superb service and has a warm and friendly atmosphere, then the legendary Nonnas should be your go to. The spice is right HEATHER CROOKES REKINDLES A LOVE FOR INDIAN FOOD AT PRITHI RAJ. t’s been a long few years since I had the privilege of an Indian restaurant. While packaged poppadoms and takeaways kept us ticking over during early parenthood and various lockdowns, the minute we crossed its threshold I knew that Prithi Raj was going to be a treat. An attentive team showed us to our table to take in the menus; a refreshed food offering, and fantastic wine list. The white rioja (£7.50, 250ml) was the perfect complement to snappy, moreish poppadoms (90p each) and the extensive pickle tray (£3). My dining partner opted for a more traditional Kingfisher beer (£5.75, 660ml). We weren’t doing well in the decisive stakes, so to start ordered the mixed raj platter for two to share (£10.80). This array of tasty classics included crispy samosas, spiced onions and potatoes, and tandoori meats. The stand out feature was the sheek kebab, a lightly spiced minced lamb treat with notes of coriander. We enjoyed these with cooling side salads. By now, the restaurant was buzzing with most tables full. The exciting thunder of waiters’ feet down the stairs from the kitchen means it’s time for main courses. My chicken anarkoli (£13.50) was perfect - diced meat with
I
78 www.sheffieldvibe.com
the unique addition of crispy green okre, laced with tasty spinach and spices. Opposite, the lamb handi (£13.50) rendered my dining partner uncharacteristically quiet. This contemplation gave way to enthusiastic feedback - aromatic, tender, delicious. The savoury bay and spice seasoning was like nothing either of us had tried - sides of pilau rice and chapatti were perfect for polishing off our plates. Chef proprietor Sojub Miah and his team, including son Ifran, kindly treated us to a couple of vegetarian dishes from the menu to try, the excellent sag paneer - a favourite in our house - and aloo gobi. The former’s creamy cheese and fragrant sauce lived up to our high standards, while a soft and gently spiced aloo gobi was perfect, particularly the cauliflower. Soon we were treated to a chat with Sobuj. As he passed through the restaurant, nods of acknowledgement, cheery hellos and shaking hands made it evident we were some of the only newbies. People come back here again and again, some for classic curries, but most for the incredible chef and house specials. His passion for the cuisine is more than evident. Sobuj doesn’t just pay lip service to Sheffield. He loves it here, and has a
deep seated connection to the city. His philanthropic efforts at Prithi Raj have raised over £100,000 for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. As we ascend the stairs from the buzzing dining room, it opens up into a space that is ideal for large parties. It even has its own bar, which was enjoyed by the cast of the last series of Strictly, introduced to Prithi Raj by local celebrity Dan Walker. He even has a dish attributed to him on the menu. A customary warm towel and less traditional, but very welcome, chocolate polished off the meal. Prithi Raj’s food is indisputably excellent, but what you can’t buy is the community you’re enveloped in during your time there. So much more than a restaurant - an institution, led by a proud team. We’ll be back soon. Prithi Raj 407 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PG Tel: 0114 266 6002 https://prithirajrestaurant.com/

Wedding origins WHY DO BRIDES WEAR WHITE, AND SHOULD YOU REALLY INCLUDE GARLIC IN YOUR BOUQUET? WESTSIDE DELVES INTO THE HISTORY OF WEDDING DRESS TRADITIONS. 82 www.sheffieldvibe.com

WEDDINGS
o, you have accepted his/her proposal and are now dreaming of the perfect, sparkling white dress for your big day. The white dress is so synonymous with weddings, you would be forgiven for thinking blushing brides have always dressed this way. However, history buffs and marriage enthusiasts alike may be interested to learn that it hasn’t always been this way. Read on to discover the weird, wonderful – and not necessarily romantic – origins of the modern day wedding dress.
S
The dress Contrary to popular belief, the white dress wasn’t chosen to represent the purity and innocence of the bride, but became fashionable after Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding day in 1840. Victoria (the trend-setting Kardashian of her time) wore a plain white dress to marry Prince Albert simply because she liked the colour. But, she wasn’t the first to do so. Mary Queen of Scots wore white when she married Dauphin François of France in 1558. Although back then, this was considered scandalous, as white was traditionally worn by royal ladies in mourning. Before Victoria’s influential white dress, women of high social standing wore rich and bold colours to show off their status. Back in the Middle Ages, as it was routine for royals to marry for political gain rather than love, the bride needed to make sure she impressed the elite groom with her wealth and beauty. The wife-to-be was responsible for representing her country and so needed to exhibit power, wealth and superiority to be a desirable candidate for an alliance. To show these traits, the seamstress would use the most lavish materials, silk, satin and fur being popular choices. So by the time Victoria’s white dress came along, brides all over Britain wanted to follow suit. One popular lady’s monthly magazine described white as “the most fitting hue” for any bride. After that, white was considered the must-have colour and merchants saw this as an opportunity to up the prices of their garments. The white dress therefore became a symbol of wealth and desirability – a trend that is seemingly here to stay. Well, every bride wants to feel like a queen, right?
The veil and train
The bouquet
The veil and train on the other hand, originated much further back in Roman times. Roman brides were swaddled from head to toe in a gigantic flamecoloured veil called the flammeum as it was believed its fiery appearance would scare off evil spirits. There is evidence to suggest that veils continued to be worn to protect brides’ faces well into medieval times. Similarly, bridesmaids wore similar dresses to the bride to confuse the spirits. The veil and train also prevented brides from running away from their grooms – and vice versa, as the bride’s face would usually only be revealed to the groom at the end of the ceremony. The lifting of the veil was also used as a symbol of the groom taking possession of his new wife and accepting her for all she was – for better or for worse. Moving closer to the modern day, everything a young princess wore on her wedding day was considered chic. Everyone wanted to emulate the regal style and as lengths of material signalled a more lavish and expensive dress, long trains were adopted by more ‘common’ brides – another element of the wedding dress that has stood the test of time.
Flowers may seem like the most romantic part of your wedding attire, but again, they were a device to ward off those pesky evil spirits. This ritual stems from a 17th century tradition of having fragrant herbs and plants such as garlic and dill in your bouquet. That’s right – garlic! The 1600s are famous for the plague epidemic and potent herbs like these were used in a desperate attempt to survive the disease. Not only were herbs thought to be good for your health (and as it turns out, rightly so), their strong scent was thought to ward off spirits. It will come as no surprise then, why would-be brides were keen to catch the bouquet – it wasn’t just their married life that depended on it. Female guests would also try to rip off pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers on her big day in order to obtain some of her good luck. To escape from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away. However, we can’t imagine women attracting many potential partners carrying this kind of bouquet around all day. www.sheffieldvibe.com 83

Rubies are red THE BRIGHTLY-COLOURED GEMSTONES ARE SOME OF THE MOST VALUABLE IN THE WORLD. PA JEWELLERY LOOK AT THEIR UNIQUE QUALITIES. uby has been considered one of the most valuable and treasured gems throughout history. It is now the gemstone favoured for 40th wedding anniversaries and the birthstone for July, so what better time to delve into its history… Rubies are red; the colour of passion and blood, and ancient cultures believed they represented the power of life. They are very tough and hard and are therefore associated with endurance (although they are by no means indestructible!). The name ruby comes to us from the Latin ‘Ruber’ meaning red. More romantically, the ancient Sanskrit language dubbed these bright red gemstones ‘Ratnaraj’: The King of precious stones. In ancient times most of the world’s rubies were found in India, and to the Hindu religion they became the most valued of all gems. The finest rubies can seem to glow from within, a property noticed as far back as Roman times, when they were said to hold an inextinguishable flame,
R
92 www.sheffieldvibe.com
able to melt wax or boil water. Rubies cannot do either of those things, but the glow can be real. It is due to fluorescence: rubies contain traces of chromium that give them their bright red colour and causes a red fluorescence when under ultraviolet light. In some stones this means that even ultraviolet wavelengths in sunlight can give the stone a subtle glow. Not all rubies fluoresce though, because some contain traces of iron, suppressing this property. Today, ruby remains one of the most valuable gemstones in the world. The Sunrise Ruby set a record for coloured gemstones selling at auction in 2015 for $30million; more than $1million per carat for the 25.59ct stone. Although several large, historical ‘rubies’ in Royal collections have been found to be spinel (another beautiful red gemstone frequently confused with ruby prior to the development of gemmological testing and famously present in the British crown jewels as the ‘Black Prince’s ruby’) there are stunning ruby pieces in the jewellery
collections of royals including the British, Portuguese and Danish. In addition to Queen Elizabeth’s ruby suite, the Duchess of Cornwall is a big fan and has two spectacular necklaces, while the engagement ring of the Duchess of York was a ruby and diamond cluster. You don’t need to be royalty to enjoy this beautiful gem. Ruby comes in a variety of hues, from pinkish to purplish or brownish red and an array of shapes, sizes and qualities. You can view a selection of our ruby jewellery on our website or visit us in our showroom to see more. Our showroom is staffed by experienced jewellers and gemmologists who will be pleased to answer any questions you may have and discuss this stunning gemstone with you! MOTORING
IF YOU LIKE YOUR CARS BIG, TALL AND IMPOSING, YOU’LL LOVE THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
All in the look The all-new Mazda CX-60 flagship SUV is launched with Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid technology powertrain and visually the new SUV reflects the latest enhancement of Kodo design - a design philosophy that debuted a decade ago with the launch of the first-generation Mazda CX-5, which was the first production car to feature Kodo design. Having entered phase two with the Mazda3 in 2019, the launch of Mazda’s very latest SUV sees Mazda’s designers take on the challenge of creating a design that would instantly reflect the advancement of the ‘Kodo-Soul of Motion’ design philosophy. Conceived under the design concept ‘Noble Toughness’, the imposing strength of the Mazda CX-60’s beautiful and dynamic styling conveys the intelligence and elegance of the latest developments in Kodo design - the Japanese concept of Ma, which is the calm and dignified beauty of empty space - woven into the toughness of the striking front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture. The CX-60’s deeply sculpted face, long nose and short rear silhouette creates a powerful and dynamic framework and an imposing SUV-like presence in a form with the simple beauty and elegance that Kodo design has become famed for.
Sporting pedigree The third generation of Land Rover’s luxury performance SUV – the Range Rover Sport – is the most desirable, technologically advanced and capable yet, mixing an imposing road presence with instinctive driving responses using the most advanced combination of chassis technologies ever fitted to a Land Rover. New Range Rover Sport is based on Land Rover’s advanced, flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex), which provides the perfect foundations for its superior dynamics and peerless refinement. Its line-up of powerful and efficient powertrains includes two six-cylinder extended range Electric Hybrid plug-ins, which provide a pure-electric driving range of up to 70 miles (113km) and CO2 emissions as low as 18g/km. The new 530PS V8 Twin Turbo provides sports car performance, with 0-60mph in as little as 4.3 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds) with Dynamic Launch engaged. Customers can also choose from powerful and efficient mild hybrid petrol and diesel Ingenium engines.
Longing for the new Bentley
XM-plary new addition
Bentley is bringing a new focus on wellness to its model range with the launch of the Bentayga Extended Wheelbase – a new grand touring SUV that builds on the strengths of the Bentayga to become a new luxury flagship, extending the latest product range to five models. So much more than just a stretch, the 180mm longer Bentayga Extended Wheelbase is the result of a nine-figure investment by Bentley to create a new model that provides the best rear cabin experience since a Mulsanne, whilst retaining the Bentley hallmarks of effortless performance, exquisite handcraftsmanship and endless personalisation. The new Bentley features Airline Seat specification, the most advanced seat ever fitted to a car, with 22-ways of adjustment and world-firsts in a new auto climate sensing system and postural adjustment technology. There will be three seating configurations, including an all-new 4+1 layout alongside four- and five-seat versions.
The first BMW M highperformance car with electrified drive has completed its final tuning process and the integrated application of the 480 kW/650hp M hybrid drive system and the model-specific M suspension technology paves the way for an outstandingly dynamic driving experience. For their test drives on public roads, the development and test engineers established an exceptionally demanding and varied route profile. The intelligently controlled interaction of the new eight-cylinder engine and the particularly powerful electric motor could thus be tested and refined in detail under a wide range of conditions: from intermediate sprints on the motorway to winding country roads and stop-and-go traffic in the city. Steep mountain passages and narrow serpentines offer the ideal terrain to demonstrate the driving dynamics potential of the M xDrive system, including the electronically controlled differential lock in the rear axle transmission. www.sheffieldvibe.com 99
