Transform your garden
Our gardens have taken on much more significance over the last few years and while we endeavour to make them the best they can possibly be, if you really want to give your outdoor space the wow factor, it may be time to turn to the experts.
Stone Mitchell & Co are based in Sheffield but work nationally and have over 20 years’ experience in transforming gardens into the most stunning of spaces. Whether that’s through adding a veranda, pergola, louvred roof, an outdoor kitchen or barbecue, stone features or plants and borders, they can work with you to help you realise exactly what it is you want and can achieve for your budget.
“We have been designing and delivering innovative, functional, beautiful spaces for over 20 years,” said managing director Ben Mitchell. “Our designers are qualified, knowledgeable and passionate about discovering the maximum potential in any space.
“Our thorough and transparent process will visualise your dream and outline how it will become a reality. We guarantee this to be a worthwhile investment in your property and lifestyle.”
One of their most popular installations is a glass garden room, which not only looks fantastic but can extend your time in the garden regardless of the weather. It can add value to your property too.
For example, the Manual Pinela currently on offer is fitted with a louvred roof and fantastic Fiano sliding glass system on three sides, giving you a fantastic useable outdoor space all year round. No planning permission is necessary and Stone Mitchell & Co provide a ten-year structure guarantee.
“A successful garden should be a journey… a physical journey with
destinations and movement but a visual and sensory journey too,” added Ben. “The space should be an experience to use and enjoy.”
With this in mind, and in addition to the installation of garden structures, Stone Mitchell & Co offer a full garden design service.
During a 60-minute consultation, one of their designers will meet you on site and discuss the possibilities within your space and establish a brief with yourselves. They will advise on what is achievable for what budget, explain the
processes involved with any build as well as any legislation and show examples of materials. Stone Mitchell & Co will also do an accurate survey of the site, collect photos from the ground and via a drone and do a soil pH test.
Armed with your budget and brief the company will come up with a scale 3D design of your space and will then organise a Zoom meeting to present and discuss the design concept CAD model. During this review, any amendments can be made if necessary, ensuring you end up with your perfectly tailored garden that works within your budget.
When and only when you are completely satisfied with your design, you will receive a scale masterplan, 3D rendered visuals, construction details and material and quantity lists, giving you the perfect instruction to put out to tender. Alternatively, Stone Mitchell & Co can complete all works with the minimum of fuss.

What is equity release and how does it work?
WE LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN TAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR PROPERTY.
Equity release is the ability to free up the equity from your property, whilst you continue to live in it. For many people, their property is their biggest asset, but all their savings are tied up in it. Equity release allows you to withdraw either a lump sum or a monthly amount from the value of your property, in a similar way to a mortgage.
How does equity release work?
Equity release is a type of lending. You are accepted by a lender who will give you either the lump sum or regular amounts against the value of your home. When you sell your home, pass away or enter a care facility, the lender will claim the amount they lent you from the property. In terms of interest, it is added to the amount taken from the property
when it is sold, or in some cases, you can pay it monthly.
Lifetime Mortgages vs Home Reversion
There are two main types of equity release.
1) The first is a Lifetime Mortgage. A lifetime mortgage is the most popular type of equity release scheme. You borrow against your property, and this is paid back when you pass away or move into long-term care.
The interest ‘rolls up’ so there are no repayments, which can add up quickly. Some providers will let you pay the interest monthly which will cut down on the amount owed when the house is sold.
2) The second option is a Home Reversion. A Home Reversion is where you sell either the whole or part of your property to a lender. You will get between 20-60 per cent of the value of your home (or if you sell a portion of it) and then are allowed to remain in the property for the rest of your life, or until moving into long-term care. You can receive the money as a lump sum or a regular income. There is no interest because you are essentially selling your property at a lower rate.
What are the main differences between a lifetime mortgage and a home reversion?
In a home reversion, you have effectively sold your property, but are allowed to live there rent-free. That means that you
PROPERTY
12 www.sheffieldvibe.com
won’t benefit from any increase in the value of your property over time (or only on the portion you haven’t sold). With a lifetime mortgage, you still own your home, so if the value increases, that will still benefit you or your estate and can be used to pay off the mortgage.
There is no interest in a Home Reversion because you have received less than market value for the property, with the lender assuming it will be worth more when they take possession of it. With a lifetime mortgage, the interest ‘rolls up’ to the total payable amount, which can add up over the years, or in some cases, you can pay off the interest monthly.
What are the risks?
In theory, if you start drawing down money quite early, or take a large sum, over the years it would be easy to end up with a large amount of interest. If the amount of equity you released plus the interest is worth more than your property upon your death, your family will be left with a hefty chunk of debt to pay off.
Some equity release schemes have a ‘no negative equity’ clause where it will cap the amount of the total value of the property. There are also some, where you can ringfence a certain portion of the value of your property for your children to inherit.
There have also been some cases where equity release was started too early, and older couples wanted to move home. Ensuring there was enough equity left in their home to buy a new property was harder after using equity release, leaving them stuck in that property when family or friends were elsewhere.
What are the advantages?
You’ll have more money for your retirement and to enjoy your life in old age.
Your home is your biggest asset and you may want a little extra money to supplement your pension or to make life easier. Some use the money for travel and enjoyment, others use it to give children or grandchildren a deposit for their own property.
It also allows you to enjoy the money you put into your home without having to downsize or go into rented accommodation. You can continue living in your home whilst accessing the money.
Is equity release right for me?
Whether equity release is the right choice for you will depend on a lot of
factors, including how old you are.
Whilst it may sound unpleasant, the older you are, and if you have any illnesses, the more likely you are to qualify for a more generous equity release offer. Whilst equity release is accessible from some providers from the age of 55, the likelihood is you will live a lot longer, your interest will build, and you may end up costing the lenders more than they would make (especially if there is a no negative equity clause).
Older people who are certain they plan to stay in their property indefinitely fare better with equity release, as sometimes selling the property can be difficult when you have taken equity out. If you are capable of being on top of your finances and can keep an eye on the interest, especially for those who just take out ‘roll down’ cash amounts as and when they need it, so you’re not paying for money you are not using, equity release could give you a new lease on life. Whether that’s making life a little more comfortable, or accessing cash to treat the grandchildren at the weekend, in the right circumstances equity release can be a great tool.
Similarly, if you don’t have children or family members you are leaving the property to, you could benefit from enjoying the money locked up in your property and then the lender simply taking hold of the property later on.
What are the costs?
There are four possible costs when it comes to applying for equity release:
• A solicitor
• An equity release advisor/financial advisor
• Lender’s application fee
• Valuation
If you are interested in equity release and setting it up, talking to an expert equity release advisor who is familiar with equity release schemes will set you on a path to the right scheme for you. When you are ready to go through with the process, a conveyancing solicitor who has experience of equity release will be able to get the ball rolling. Home reversions can take a little longer than lifetime mortgages to be finalised, but usually, the process can take about 6-8 weeks.
Will it affect my benefits/pension/ income tax?
If you are on means-tested benefits, some of these may be affected by drawing down money from an equity release. Things like reduced council tax, income support or other benefits may be reduced so it is worth talking to your equity release advisor, as well as the local authority or benefits office to make a choice that works out best for you.
What other options are there?
In some cases, it depends on what you want the money for, as equity release may not be the right option.
If you want a one-off sum, a personal loan may be an easier option.
If you are looking to make changes to your property to make later life or living with a disability easier, there may be grants available.
If you are simply looking to free up some money from your property, downsizing may be a good option, though take into account the other costs associated with moving, including conveyancing, surveying, removals and Stamp Duty.

REBECCA WALES LOOKS THE ENDURING APPEAL OF DORE AND TOTLEY – AND WHY THEY’RE SUCH POPULAR PLACES TO LIVE.
or many years, Dore and Totley have been regarded as two of the most sought-after areas in Sheffield for home buyers. The suburbs are based in the extreme south-west of Sheffield, lying on the county boundaries of Derbyshire. Dore and Totley are both renowned for having a rich and varied collection of independent restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops, plus an enviable proximity to the Peak District.
Situated on a hill above the River Sheaf, Dore is famous for its historical significance, with its earliest written record tracing back to the year 829. An entry in the AngloSaxon Chronicle states that King Egbert of Wessex became the first

Totley
king of all England at Dore after conquering the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. His victory is commemorated by the Dore Stone, which can be found on the village green.
The majority of Dore’s amenities are situated on Church Lane, High Street, Townhead Road and Causeway Head
Road. Alongside various independent shops, you’ll also find a convenience store, service station and newsagent, a pharmacy, optician, osteopath and dentist, plus a selection of hair and beauty salons.
Situated just south of Dore, Totley is likewise a historically significant area. From at least the 17th century, the two brooks which run through the suburb have been used as a source of power for small industrial operations.
For example, several mills which stood on the Old Hay Brook were used for lead smelting, corn grinding, blade manufacturing and paper rolling. Meanwhile, the Totley Brick Works on Baslow Road helped supply the bricks for the construction of the Totley Tunnel which, when completed in 1893, was the second-longest railway tunnel in the UK.
The suburb also features a variety of historical buildings, including Totley Hall, which is generally believed to have been built in 1623, and Totley Grange, which was built in the late nineteenth century. During the Second World War, Totley Grange was used for essential war work by J. G. Graves, who assembled wire bundles for a range of aircraft.
Similarly to Dore, Totley is home to a range of independent restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops, the majority of which are situated on Baslow Road. Alongside these, there are also two convenience stores, a newsagent and post office, a veterinarian and pet supply store, an optician, chiropodist and podiatrist, a physiotherapy clinic, a medical and dental practice, two pharmacies, plus various hair and beauty salons.
Other amenities that make Dore and
Totley desirable places to live include the suburbs’ close proximity to the Dore & Totley Railway Station and the Blacka Moor Nature Reserve. Blacka Moor contains 181 hectares of breathtaking scenery and forms part of the Eastern Peak District Moors, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Blacka Moor is renowned for its varieties of heather and diverse migrant bird population, as well as the fact that it’s a great place to spot red deer. Alongside this, Dore and Totley are also home to two ‘outstanding’ primary schools as well as King Ecgbert School, which has long been regarded as one of the best secondary schools in the
northeast of the country.
Closer to the city centre, Millhouses is situated on the northwest bank of the River Sheaf and is part of the Abbeydale section of the Sheaf valley. It is primarily a residential area, with most of the houses having been built in the 1920s (although there are some that date from the late 19th century).
The area’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly Millhouses Park, which comprises a mixture of green spaces, planted areas and leisure facilities. The park contains a large mixture of native and ornamental tree species, along with a sensory garden that features a variety of flowers, shrubs and herbs. Situated in the centre of the park, this area offers a quiet and reflective space for people to relax.
In the old lido area, there is a Splash Waterplay section which incorporates an adventure play area, skatepark and splash area. The park also features an adventure playground, a cricket pitch, a basketball court, football pitches, tennis courts, putting and bowling greens, plus a boating lake for paddle boats. Visitors to the park can grab something to eat or drink at the café next to the boating lake or go to nearby pubs.

Staves know how important it is to make a good first impression, which is why they spend so much time and effort ensuring that their properties stand out from the crowd and demand people’s attention. This, combined with an obsession with the latest technology and innovation within estate agency, enables them to offer a complete and comprehensive marketing package for all of our properties.
During the last 12 months Staves are proud to have achieved an average of 105.5 per cent of asking price, have sold 92 per cent of properties that we market and receive over 15,600 property enquiries per month. In doing so we hold onto all the traditional values that you would expect from an independent and largely family run estate of honesty and integrity and always put the needs of our clients first.

Sought-after suburb
ulwood and Ranmoor have both featured in The Times’ list of best places to live in the north and are currently two of the most sought-after areas in Sheffield.
The affluent suburbs are home to a variety of independent restaurants, bars, cafes, pubs, shops and businesses – the majority of which are located on Oakbrook Road and Fulwood Road.
As well as having an enviable proximity to the Peak District, Fulwood and Ranmoor are situated near some of Sheffield’s best recreational green spaces, which includes Forge Dam, Whiteley Woods and Bingham Park.
Forge Dam
A former industrial site, Forge Dam is a popular destination for families and walkers. The park provides a beautiful place to stop for a break to admire the views across the Dam or to enjoy refreshments from the cafe. There’s also a children’s playground with a large slide
built into the hillside. The Dam itself is silting up very quickly and the Friends of the Porter Valley are working hard on a restoration project which aims to remove the silt, reduce the size of the island and install a submerged wall which will prevent the dam from silting up again.
Whiteley Woods
In order to get to Bingham Park from Forge Dam, walkers can take one of the trails that follows the Porter Brook River through Whiteley Woods. On the way, walkers may come across the Wire Mill Dam and the memorial to Thomas Boulsover, who was the inventor of Sheffield plate.
Bingham Park
Situated high on a hillside with views across the valley to Ranmoor, Bingham Park is the largest park in the area. An ideal place to go for all kinds of
sportspeople, the park features an AstroTurf football pitch, two tennis courts, a new basketball/netball court and a bowling green. The basketball/netball court was opened last year and there are plans to transform the park’s two remaining old courts into a second basketball/netball court and a mini skate park.
Shepherd Wheel Museum
Bingham Park is also home to the Shepherd Wheel, which is a working museum in a former water-powered grinding workshop. With origins at least as far back as 1584, the Grade II listed Shepherd Wheel is one of the few remaining – and effectively complete –examples of the working knife grinding industry in Sheffield. Visitors to the museum are able to see the restored working waterwheel and machinery in action along with a collection of tools and equipment on display within the grinding hulls.

Oakbrook Road
Exit through Bingham Park’s main entrance and you’ll find yourself on Oakbrook Road. Alongside having easy access to Bingham Park, Oakbrook Road is also renowned for its range of independent restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and businesses.
Fulwood Road
Fulwood Road is situated north of Oakbrook Road and is also renowned for its range of independent restaurants, bars, cafes, pubs, shops and businesses. It also boasts a music shop, a wine shop, two takeaways and three beauty salons. It’s worth noting that there are pharmacies on both Fulwood Road and Oakbrook Road, as well as multiple hair salons.
St John’s Church
Situated just off Fulwood Road, St John’s is an impressive Grade II* listed parish church featuring the tallest spire in Sheffield. Officially opened in 1879, the original church building was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1887, with the 200foot-tall tower and spire being the only part that survived. St John’s reopened in 1888 after a new church was built that incorporated the old tower and spire.

Hair & Scalp Consultancy
The Hair & Scalp Consultancy, on Oakbrook Road, is where you will meet Russell McFarlane, an expert in the field of tricoscopy.
Russell uses his training and 15 years of experience to diagnose, advise on and treat most scalp and hair-loss disorders. These distressing conditions with long names such as androgenetic alopecias, telegen effluvium and hair sheath disorders, are generally caused by genetics, auto-immune syndromes, health issues or simply lifestyle choices.
In his salon, Russell will trichoscopically examine a living sample of a hair bulb to determine the cause of these disorders and will be able to estimate the severity of the disorder and predict any future possible hair loss.
With Russell’s help these issues can be halted, reduced or completely eliminated. You can be assured of a completely confidential and friendly service.

The pandemic taught us that the future can be uncertain. No one can predict what may happen and whether a reliance on long term care may be on the horizon.
Couples who own a home together may not be aware that they can protect it with a Property Protection Trust Will.
Anne Rogers, director of wills and probate at Best Solicitors, explains: “It can be a costly shock for families if the time comes when long term care is the only option.
“Care fees are substantial and may mean that after the death of one spouse, using the family home to fund

Couples can protect half the equity in their home should long term care be needed, and protect their hard-earned asset for their children. With Property Protection Trust Wills in place, if long term care is needed, the local authority can only use the share of the property owned by the surviving spouse when calculating the personal contribution towards care fees.
Anne continued: “Life can be unpredictable. We can help couples take control of the future and protect their loved ones.”

‘Your local carpet shop’
.M. Hill Carpets Ltd recently celebrated its tenth anniversary and in that time has become an established part of the Hillsborough community.
Often dubbed ‘Your local carpet shop’, it remains a completely independent family business; owner Lee Hill works alongside his son, Brandon, and his wife and mum help out too. A friendly, approachable manner is at the heart of everything they do backed by expertise in all forms of flooring.
Lee worked as a fitter for over 20 years before setting up L.M. Hill Carpets Ltd and offers a range of carpets, rugs, vinyls and laminates.
“With a wide range of flooring options to choose from, you’ll find the perfect style, comfort level and practicality that’s just right for the way you live,” said Lee. “We have a huge choice as well as underlay and accessories at prices to suit all budgets.”
Over the years Lee has seen a huge surge in the popularity of Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), so much so it now accounts for 60-70 per cent of their business. L.M. Hill has one of the biggest selections in the area, both stick and click versions,
stocking ranges from the likes of Karndean, Moduleo, Invictus and Project Floors.
“LVT offers elegance and superior design quality as well as being highly durable and resistant,” added Lee. “The best thing is it can go anywhere in the home and completely transform a room.”
On the carpet front L.M. Hill have ranges from Cormar and Abingdon, examples of which can be found in their showroom on Middlewood Road.
“From practical loop pile, elegant Saxony, hardwearing twist pile, and allpurpose Berber, you are sure to find a carpet type that is perfect for your needs,” said Lee.
Elsewhere in the showroom you’ll find traditional cushion vinyl which is available in a variety of woods, stones and abstract colours with varying size options.
“Our sheet lino comes with a heavily cushioned backing making for a warm and comfortable sensation under foot,” added Lee.

“I absolutely love my wood effect flooring and carpets,” said one happy customer. “There is so much choice to choose from which is mind-blowing, however, the service was great and went into detail of the different options available and we was able to take as many samples as we wanted. The fitting was fantastic too with minimal disruption and was completed in no time at all. Would highly recommend and use again.”

No-fault divorce and dealing with finances
BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ FAMILY LAW TEAM, ADVISES CAUTION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING EXPERT ADVICE.
pril 2022 saw the long-awaited introduction of no-fault divorce: a concept for which family lawyers and other family law professionals had campaigned for many years.
The introduction saw the biggest shake-up in divorce law for 50 years. It aimed to allow couples to divorce or dissolve a civil partnership without one of them attributing blame to the other, thereby removing hostilities and making the process more amicable. It’s fair to say that, a year on, it has done that. More and more couples are choosing to carry out the divorce/dissolution process themselves and the introduction of joint applications seems to have been welcomed by separating couples.
The overall process is much easier and has been welcomed by separating couples and lawyers alike.
But the divorce itself is not usually the conclusion of matters: it does not deal with the financial implications for separating couples. When and how is that addressed?
When a final order is issued, you will not be told by a court to sort out your financial claims or even what that means and how to do it. There is no bar to obtaining a divorce/dissolution even if your financial claims are unresolved.
The divorce process will end your marriage and make you a single person again. It does not sort out your finances automatically.
Because no-fault divorce means that the divorce/dissolution process is much more accessible, many people are taking the leap without legal advice. That is understandable: it keeps costs down. But the downside of it is that divorcing couples or those dissolving a civil partnership don’t get any legal advice on how their finances should be sorted. Some think that a verbal agreement between them is sufficient - it isn’t. Some think they have no financial claim to make – that may not be the case.
When you enter into a marriage or civil partnership, you automatically gain
financial claims against each other. This includes claims for maintenance and against cash, earnings, property, inheritance and pensions – probably one of the most valuable assets in any marriage/civil partnership. Those claims remain open, even after you have obtained the final order in a divorce/dissolution. They don’t automatically go away.
Legal advice is vital if you want to ensure that your finances are sorted equitably and legally when you divorce or dissolve your civil partnership – especially in relation to pensions. Each year, it’s likely that significant sums are lost by spouses/civil partners failing to consider pensions as part of a financial settlement. Some people might not even realise they have a claim against their spouse’s/civil partner’s pension or appreciate how valuable a pension can be. It may even be possible for someone to be at risk of losing their entitlement to the pension if the final order is pronounced and the other spouse/civil partner then dies before finances are sorted out.
Verbal agreements relating to financial issues between ex-spouses/civil partners are very rarely satisfactory. There have been cases where a verbal agreement was entered into and then one spouse/civil partner later withdrew their
consent, seeking a different (and often increased) settlement. Such verbal agreements are not legally enforceable, and it is often difficult and more expensive to try to rectify issues later.
Bradie Pell, partner and head of Graysons’ family law team, cautions: “The introduction of no-fault divorce has certainly made it easier and less acrimonious to carry out the divorce or dissolution of civil partnership yourself. However, it is still always best to take legal advice regarding your finances at an early stage so that you know what your options are. You will then be able to make an informed decision as to how you should proceed.”
If you want to discuss your own situation, we currently offer new clients an initial, free 30-minute consultation with one of our family law experts, who will give you an overview of the law relating to your case, advise you on the next steps and what the cost implications will be.

BAMFORDS AUCTIONEERS & VALUERS HAS THE ‘STRONGEST TEAM IT HAS EVER HAD’ AND RECENTLY OPENED A NEW FLAGSHIP AUCTION ROOM IN DERBY.
Bamfords and its partner companies, Neales, Richardson & Linnell and Noel Wheatcroft, have had their roots in Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire for almost 200 years however, the history of auctioneering can be traced surprisingly far further back in its history.
The Taverns and coffee houses of England and France were originally the venues where one would go to buy and sell art and ‘chattels’ (personal property) during the late 17th century.
In ancient times Marcus Aurelius was said to have run an auction in Rome that lasted eight weeks.
A somewhat strange early method of selling was by candle. This involved a large candle lit in sight of the bidders where the auction would run until it went out. This method dates back as far as 1368. One can only imagine how often coffing and spluttering was used as an early tactic to extinguish the flame. The fights and quarrels of the candle method meant it was not universally popular.
The now familiar knock of the gavel in front of a room of bidders was first introduced in the 18th century and although the style has changed the basic principle has stayed the same until recent years.
Now in the 21st century Bamfords have not only expanded but have changed to adapt to the new market trends.
Bamfords’ premises at Peak Village Shopping Centre in Rowsley has extended into a second saleroom whilst the new Derby flagship auction room boasts an elegant double height atrium, two large salerooms and a third jewellery and precious metal gallery.
Bamfords have the design and technology to market art and antiques all over the world. They now regularly sell to more than 70 countries and also unlike many of its competitors still opens
its doors to view and bid in person.
TV auctioneer James Lewis emphasises that “an auction room can only be great with great auctioneers and before making a decision on where to sell, a client should certainly take the time to listen to the abilities of the auctioneer on the rostrum”.
James is a double winner of National Auctioneer of the Year and also holds Guinness World Records in auctioneering.
“Bamfords’ team is the strongest we have ever had with a combination of experience as well as some great new valuers,” he said. “Unlike many of our competitors locally, Bamfords have specialist valuers in charge of all departments.”
Upcoming lots
Bamfords hold regular auctions at both the Derby and Rowsley auction houses including fine art and antiques, jewellery and watches, library and curated objects, toys, juvenilia, collectables and comics, clocks and barometers, oriental works of art, firearms and militaria and fine silver as well as weekly collectors and interiors and on site single owner house auctions.
Bamfords conduct valuations at both their Derby and Rowsley auction rooms as well as many other venues across the region. For advice on selling in all areas including antiques, collectables and jewellery James and the team are available for home visits in Sheffield and the surrounding area.

Donkey Nonsense: Prints by James Green
Until 8 October Millennium Gallery
www.museums-sheffield.org.uk
This summer, the Millennium Gallery celebrates the work of one of Sheffield’s most popular artists and printmakers, James Green. Alongside his bold renderings of landscapes and animals of all kinds, donkeys have been a muchloved mainstay of Green’s prints for over 15 years. Donkey Nonsense: Prints by James Green will showcase more than 50 of Green’s donkey-inspired screenprints and linocuts, alongside clothing, ceramics, films and more.
Born in Birmingham, Green studied Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University and has worked fulltime as a printmaker based in the city for over 12 years. While his work has become well known in the city, Green’s success extends well beyond Sheffield – he has produced commissions for Paul Smith Menswear, English Heritage and Hudson Records, and has appeared on both Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year (2013) and Landscape Artist of the Year (2015). His work has previously been exhibited at the Oriel Mostyn (Llandudno), Colours May Vary (Leeds), as well as at the city’s A Month of Sundays gallery, Cupola Gallery and The Long Gallery at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Donkey Nonsense is the most comprehensive retrospective of Green’s work to date. The exhibition will also feature a series of new work, which will go on sale exclusively in the gallery shop, alongside other exhibition merchandise.

CAN YOU BELIEVE TRAMLINES IS 15? WITH RICHARD ASHCROFT, THE COURTEENERS, PAUL HEATON AND MORE, THIS YEAR’S EVENT LOOKS SET TO BE A SCORCHER. LET’S HOPE THE WEATHER OBLIGES TOO.
The countdown is now well and truly on. By the time you read this, work is probably well underway to get Hillsborough Park ready for what will be the fifth Tramlines event to be held there.
And what a line-up we have. Way back at the start of the year it was confirmed that Richard Ashcroft, The Courteeners and Paul Heaton would be headlining the weekend, which takes place from 2123 July. These will be joined by the likes of DMA’s, Kaiser Chiefs, Sugababes and Bloc Party. Local favourites Reverend & The Makers and the Everly Pregnant Brothers will also return.
The second wave of announcements added UK Eurovision contestant Mae Muller, Ella Henderson, Professor Green, Chappaqua Wrestling and more.

Operations director Timm Cleasby has been involved with Tramlines since the beginning and said: “This year’s lineup is a cracker with some awesome names and, as always, there’s more than just music with loads to do, see and get involved with.
“My personal must-sees are Kate Nash, Rachel Chinouriri, Rumbi Tauro, Sugababes, the funny Paul Smith and Paul Heaton. To quote our much-missed friend Sarah Nulty, ‘I just want to have a massive party with all my friends’. The turns are booked, the party’s on and you’re all invited. It can’t come soon enough.”
Comedy plays a huge part of Tramlines, taking over the T’Other Stage in the daytime. Acts confirmed this year include award-winning comedian and Hollywood star Omid Djalili, the outrageous spoof news reporter Jonathan Pie, and the quick-witted Hot Water Comedy Club compere Paul Smith. Plenty more laughs are in store with Tom Wrigglesworth, John Hastings, Nina Gilligan, Tamer Kattan, Scott Bennett and Raul Kohli.
Since 2009, Tramlines remains true to its roots in supporting both breaking and emerging talent. This year it’s tipping acts such as Stone, The Moly Wallopers, Primaqueen, Jetski, Franz Von, Amaroun, Deadletter, Lizzie Esau, Deuxe to be big hits.
Each year The Library Stage is a thriving home to a diverse selection of grass roots artists and once again local talent competition Pattern and Push will be curating the Saturday line-up, with newly-announced local acts Coco, Deuxe, JxK and DJ Lamour confirmed to appear.
The Open Arms stage has been an absolute hit with festival goers ever since its arrival in 2021 for its buzzing atmosphere and cabaret-style billing. Tramlines is thrilled to reveal the return of Shaun Williams’ Barrioke for 2023 which pulls in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. There will be sing-alongs galore with Hip Hop Karaoke and Tragedy - Heavy Metal Bee Gees from NYC- games from Musical Bingo and Shell Suit Cher Bingo, world music from The Mariachis and German oompah band Brasswurst, and many more not-tomissed performances including, The Daniel Wakeford Experience, and the band born out of Sheffield’s disability arts charity, Under The Stars.
The Open Arms is also host to ‘Speakers Corner’, the only place on site to discover cutting edge lyricists, insightful poets and spoken word artists. Poet and hip-hop artist himself, Otis Mensah, is back to programme an exciting mix of talent that includes, San Diego rapper RoQy TyRaiD, a takeover from Sheffield’s urban lyricist competition Slambarz featuring The 1 Devotion and Young Eman, the caressing tones of Aka Kelzz, the emerging talents of poet Tai Ògún, Sheffield’s newest Poet Laureate, Danaë Wellington, and so much more.
Dominic Heslop, co-founder of Slambarz said, “We are so grateful for the opportunity to showcase the incredible talent, charisma and artistry that our young musicians possess. At Slambarz we strongly advocate live performance to enhance the connection between artists, audience and the community.
“Tramlines is one of biggest music festivals in the UK, renowned for its colossal headline acts, diverse culture and exponent of grassroots musicians and we’re very happy to be involved.”
And if that wasn’t enough, The Open Arms will also stage party-starting DJ sets when some of Sheffield’s favourite club brands takeover. Expect to flex the vocal cords and do some serious shapethrowing when The Sound - A Celebration of the 1975, ABBA Party, and the Club Tropicana DJs take control of the sound desk. There ain’t no party like a Tramlines party!
As we get ready to go to print, there was a handful of tickets still available – and we mean a handful. To find out more, visit www.tramlines.org.uk

CAN BE PART OF THIS YEAR’S EVENT.
The Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing. This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
The kitchen served a wonderful fourcourse meal which consisted of cod and prawn bake, lightly spiced sweet potato and coconut soup, pot daube of beef and white chocolate and raspberry creme brulée.
When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better. The 3
AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award.
Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and well-deserved.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted for by yourselves of course. We had a flurry of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, Beju and The Wortley Arms, it was the north Sheffield venue that scooped the prize, winning by a narrow margin of less than 100 votes. It couldn’t have been closer.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.
Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk
Young Chef of the Year 2023
Calling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2023.
The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 August 2023.
All entrants will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition at a date to be arranged later this year. Last year we hosted the competition at Sheffield College’s renowned catering department and were wowed by some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Our winner was Chris Parker from The George, Hathersage… so who’ll be named as our next rising star?
The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight.
The results will be announced at the 2023 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – on Monday 30 October.
We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few months, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved.
But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know.

Popular choice
ondon Road’s Chinatown has long been a favourite of Westside and at our annual restaurant awards has been crowned ‘Best Oriental’ on the last three occasions. It’s the combination of fantastic food, attentive service and charming surroundings that make Martin Ng’s restaurant such a popular choice and goes a long way to explain why they get so much repeat custom, particularly with the growing Chinese community in the city.
Many will recognise Chinatown as the former Candytown restaurant and Martin undertook a huge refurbishment when he took over several years ago.
“My aim was to create a totally different look to reflect a new start in the kitchen,” said Martin. “I brought three expert chefs over with me from Hong Kong so we could be sure we had the best team behind us.”
We were pleased to find these same high standards evident as we stepped through the door into a busy restaurant for an early dinner on a Friday.
Chinatown operates two different menus to cater for both English and Chinese diners as well as a lunchtime
dim sum menu. Having brought our two children with us, we craved some familiarity and chose from the former, but not before choosing drinks from the neon-lit bar. Singha beer (£5.20, pint) was cool and refreshing on a warm summer’s day whilst J2O’s in differing flavours (£2.80) satisfied our younger diners as well as the designated driver.
After the obligatory prawn crackers we marvelled as manager Louis shredded crispy duck (£17.50, half) in front of us. Served with steamed pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoi sin sauce, it’s a classic flavour combination that never fails to impress and this example was a good as you’ll find.
We also shared dishes of crispy seaweed (£4.50) and very good salt and pepper squid (£5.50), which was deliciously crisp yet tender on the inside.
My children can’t look past sweet and sour chicken (£9) when it comes to main courses and they loved Chinatown’s version, which they ate with some egg fried rice (£2.50). “Five stars,” said my son, a sure seal of approval.
My wife and I shared fillet steak Cantonese style (£11), which was served on a sizzling platter, and added some
noodles into the equation in the form of roast pork chow mein (£7.50). The incredibly tender beef had a fruity kick from the sauce whilst the soft noodles had an almost smoky flavour.
We were too full to take up Martin’s offer of dessert but reflected on what was a very enjoyable experience. We’d gone down the tried and tested route for sure but I’d love to return and try something a little different.
In a restaurant category that has shown increasing competition over the years, Chinatown still stands head and shoulders above much of the competition and will certainly be in the running for our restaurant awards again this year.

THE ASSEMBLY BRINGS A BAR AND BISTRO TO THE ALREADY POPULAR SCHOOLROOMS IN BRADFIELD, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
It’s the time of year when thousands of school children across the city are preparing to sit their GCSE and A-Level exams. No doubt they will be filled with apprehension but with hope for what the future holds too.
Despite its name, thankfully there are no such anxieties at The Assembly, the new bar and bistro attached to The Schoolrooms in Low Bradfield – and not an exam paper in sight.
The former home to Low Bradfield School, which closed in 1985, has undergone something of a makeover of late that has seen the two-storey dwelling completely overhauled.
The Assembly is split over multiple levels with two distinct dining areas; The Library and Caretaker’s as well as a spacious bar, mezzanine and tap room and has more distinct design elements to create an exciting atmosphere for the evening crowd.
The Assembly has quickly become the jewel in the venue’s crown and turns The Schoolrooms into an all-day venue. The Cafe and Kitchen opens daily until 5pm while the Bistro opens Wednesday to Saturday from 4-11.30pm. Together the team have devised an ever-changing à la carte menu that puts a modern twist on traditional British dining and uses
seasonal ingredients, many of which are sourced from local suppliers.
My starter of black pudding, poached egg, dressed mixed leaves, red onion marmalade, and hollandaise (£7) was the perfect introduction to our evening and was well-cooked all round; the black pudding crisp, soft egg and a delicious sauce. My wife’s oak smoked salmon, roasted beetroot, mixed leaves, dill, capers, lemon, seeded sliced bread and crème fraiche (£9) provided a lighter alternative.
Main courses offered more robust options. Sirloin steak, accompanied by crispy onions, crispy kale, on the vine tomatoes and fat chips (£22), was cooked medium-rare as requested and incredibly tender. My wife enthused over her chicken supreme, fondant potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, smoked bacon lardons (£19), which was served with an excellent wholegrain mustard sauce.
Desserts were equally refined, showing skill and an appreciation of classic flavours. My cherry bakewell pudding, served with crushed amaretti biscuit and vanilla ice cream (£7), had an air of familiarity with sour cherry and sweet almond flavours, whilst my wife’s pannacotta (£6) was given a sharp and spicy hit with the addition of a mixed berry compote and ginger biscuit crumb.
It was a delicious way to end the meal.
As well as the regular a la carte menu, The Assembly run a supper club on Wednesdays and Thursdays offering two courses for £19 and three for £24, which seems incredible value for money.
“We can pretty much cater for every eventuality and occasion,” said manager Laura Helliwell. “Our aim is to turn The Schoolrooms and Assembly into a destination venue. We want people to come to Bradfield specifically to visit us but of course you can’t forget the glorious north Sheffield countryside we have on our doorstep. Whatever time of day you’re visiting, make sure you stop by and say hello.”
When the exam results arrive in summer, it would be a great place to celebrate.

CHRIS WILSON VISITS ONE OF THE BEST VALUE-FOR-MONEY DINING OPTIONS IN THE CITY.
ver the years I have always enjoyed the air of expectation that comes with a visit to Napoleons Casino. Games of chance (I’m sure some would say skill) aren’t really my bag, so we’re talking about the restaurant, rather than the card and roulette tables.
Nevertheless, the fact that a visit to the dining area requires a walk through the low-lit permanent neon glow of the gaming floor adds to that sense of occasion.
It also doesn’t hurt that Napoleons remain one of the very best value-formoney options in Sheffield’s competitive eating out scene, with the Dine in Style menu offering three courses and a drink from the bar for £29 per person from Sunday to Thursday and £35 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Old hands will know that Dine in Style also offers a £5 bet and despite my lack of knowledge in this twilit world it did provide a frisson of excitement at the end of the evening. More of that later… we’re here to eat.
The restaurant is nice and spacious, service is extremely attentive and the menu changes every other month so there’s always something new to try.
For starters, lamb koftas were succulent and spicy, imaginatively presented in a popadom basket, while
the accompanying raita sauce, apple and coriander salad and mango syrup ensured that every mouthful was an explosion of tastes and textures.
Another starter scoring highly for imaginative flavour combinations was a rich, fleshy fillet of scorched mackerel served with beetroot and horseradish relish, pickled cucumber, and radish and watercress oil.
Our meal had got off to a great start and standards remained high as I ordered a classic chargrilled sirloin steak, served with wilted greens and smoked bacon, gnocchi with creamed garlic mushrooms. Main courses are served with seasonal vegetables and portions are on the generous side but seeing as I was treating myself to a hunk of red meat I couldn’t resist a side order of triple cooked chips (£3) and very good they were too, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, perfect for that juicy steak served medium rare.
My friend Claudia ordered Korean glazed belly pork which came with stirfried noodles, a crispy pork wonton, pak choi and sticky plum reduction. Not too spicy but certainly not bland, it was demolished with great relish.
And so to desserts, and we shared a warm gingerbread pudding which was wonderfully moist and was served with clotted cream ice-cream and butterscotch
sauce, and an equally splendid Biscoff cheesecake, with caramelised bananas and salted caramel sauce.
To drink, a large glass of the house Sauvignon Blanc (£6.70) and another large glass of the house Shiraz (£6.70) eased me into the weekend nicely. Claudia sipped water and kept a clear head, perhaps aware that there was that small matter of a free bet to tackle before we called it a night.
We decided a spin on a roulette wheel was the way to go, for no reason other than it was close to the restaurant, and while our decidedly scattergun approach lacked any science or aforethought, we quickly built up a small profit and quit while the going was good.
So, no gaming tips from me but do visit the Napoleons restaurant. It’s the nearest thing you’ll find to a sure thing.

ZAAP BRINGS BANGKOK TO SHEFFIELD - IN SOME STYLE - WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
A
visit to Ecclesall Road’s Zaap is an attack on the senses – and that’s before you get to the food. It’s bright, bustling and noisy and delivers on its promise to ‘transport you to the street food markets of Bangkok (with no passport required…)’.
The spacious restaurant, which has become a big hit since it opened last year, definitely has that market feel with a large open kitchen, packed tables and even a tuk-tuk parked in the corner. It’s a formula that clearly works and the ‘novelty’ shows no signs of wearing off as we arrived to an already busy restaurant on a midweek evening.
The menu is filled with familiar and not-so-familiar dishes that range from snacks and soups to noodles and curries and lots in between.
Singha is one of the most popular beers in Thailand and was the perfect introduction to my evening (£5.50, pint) whilst my wife opted for a Pinot Grigio Rose (£6.20, large glass). For larger groups, Zaap has recently introduced a Singha Beer Tower (£27) which sees a three-litre vessel brought to your table complete with beer tap so you can pour away to your heart’s content. It definitely
avoids those constant calls to the bar although it’s worth noting that service is ultra-efficient and in-keeping with the speedy nature of the restaurant.
After munching on some Thai-style prawn crackers (Khow Kreb Tod, £3.25) we tucked into Moo Yang (£6.50), a popular street food dish of marinated pork skewers with sesame seeds, and Hakao (£6.25), a traditional Chinese dim sum dish of steamed prawn dumplings. Both dishes were served with a hoi-sin-style dip.
Our main courses quickly followed, although in traditional street-food style dishes are brought to your table as and when they are ready. A chicken noodle dish of Suki Hang (£11.50) was relatively mild, rich in the flavours of sesame and consisted of fried glass noodles, vegetables and egg.
My Pad Ga Prao (£11.75) definitely had more kick and was given a threechilli rating, although for me it was just on the right side of spicy. The minced pork and chicken flavoured with chilli, garlic and basil was fragrant and tasty whilst the fried egg (£1 supplement) which sat atop the accompanying jasmine rice added an extra dimension.
Zaap doesn’t hold back on dessert and I tucked into a traditional Thai dish of Khow Niew Sang Ka Ya (£4.25), a sweetened sticky rice with slices of Thai custard. Served warm, it was almost rice pudding like whilst the custard added extra texture and sweetness.
My wife sampled two scoops of YeeKwan ice cream (£4.50), on this occasion yuzu and vanilla and was impressed with both flavours. We finished with a pot of jasmine tea (£1.95).
If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxed meal then perhaps Zaap is not for you. But if you want fast, fun and dishes full of flavour, it’s right up your street (market).

A STAG OR HEN DO DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN ALL-DAY BOOZING AND ANTICS. REBECCA WALES LOOKS AT ALTERNATIVE PRE-WEDDING CELEBRATIONS.
T
here’s been a noticeable trend recently that more people are organising stag/hen dos that don’t involve consuming vast amounts of alcohol. While some people might cringe at the thought of a boozefree stag/hen do, others might embrace the idea. After all, not everyone will fancy spending the following days after feeling slightly worse for wear with hazy memories.
If you’re planning to organise an alcohol-free stag/hen do but are struggling for ideas, then be sure to check out the list below. These unique stag/hen do activities are proof that you can still have a fun time without relying on booze.
Olympic Shames
Olympic Shames is the ideal stag/hen do activity if you’re looking to do something that’s both entertaining and hilarious whilst also allowing you to get some exercise. The Olympic Shames involves teams competing in a variety of typical school sports day games, but with an adult-themed, innuendo-based twist. For extra laughs, it’s also recommended that stags/hens play the games in fancy dress.
Bubble Football / Bubble Mayhen
Bubble football is a relatively new concept that’s becoming increasingly popular as a stag do activity. Strapped into a giant inflatable bubble (also
known as a Zorb) with just your legs free, bubble football is like the popular game we all know and love but with a hilarious twist. A similar activity which is less football-focused and more popular with hen dos is bubble mayhen. This involves hens competing in a variety of amusing games that will guarantee great fun and great laughs.
WEDDINGS
84 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Go-karting
Another increasingly popular activity which will also guarantee a lot of laughs, go-karting allows stags/hens to show off their driving skills and put their racing abilities to the test.
Farm Adventure
If you’re looking to organise a stag/hen do that’s slightly bizarre but certainly unique, then why not spend the day (or weekend) on a farm? Farm adventures allow stags/hens to take part in a variety of amusing farm-inspired activities, most of which involve mucking around with animals, tractors and hay bales. Alongside having a laugh, stags/hens may also pick up a few handy skills too.
Coasteering
If you fancy organising a slightly more adventurous stag/hen do, then coasteering is definitely worth checking out. Featuring a combination of scrambling, climbing, swimming, and cliff jumping in amazing locations, coasteering is a great way for stags/hens to get together as a group and do something really memorable and unique. Coasteering sessions can also be tailored to suit a group’s sense of adventure, fitness, and ability, which makes it an inclusive activity too.
Treasure Hunt
If you’re looking to organise a stag/hen do that’s both fun, inclusive and cheap, then a treasure hunt might be the answer. You can either plan your own or use a treasure hunt app which will provide teams with a list of clues, timed challenges and puzzles to complete, plus a live scoreboard and GPS map of the hunt location. As well as providing stags/hens with a unique way of exploring towns and cities, treasure hunts are also great for breaking the ice if there are people in the group who don’t know each other too well.
Murder Mystery
If you fancy organising a stag/hen do that’s both entertaining and immersive, then murder mysteries might be one to check out. You could either use a DIY murder mystery kit to create one yourself or take part in an organised event featuring professional actors. Another great ice-breaker activity,
murder mysteries encourage stags/hens to figure out whodunnit as a team by completing challenges, solving riddles, uncovering clues and questioning suspects.
Escape Room
Another relatively new concept that’s become increasingly popular as a stag/hen do activity is escape rooms. Similarly to murder mysteries, escape rooms provide a unique and immersive experience that can be either funny or frightening depending on the theme of the room. In order to unlock the door and escape, stags/hens must work together to solve a variety of clues, puzzles and riddles inside the room within a certain time limit.
Cinema Gaming
If your stag/hen do comprises a lot of gamers, then why not organise a gaming session at the cinema? Many cinemas will allow groups of people to rent a screen for a few hours, either to watch a film or to play games. All you have to do
is bring your own games console, link it up and then get ready to battle it out with your fellow stags/hens on an immense screen with immersive surround sound.
Virtual Reality Experience
If you would like to organise a stag/hen do that’s completely different to anything else, then why not leave the real world behind and take your stags/hens on a VR adventure? Using all the latest equipment provided at a VR studio, stags/hens can experience a variety of mind-bending VR simulators that’ll turn their world upside down. Alternatively, stag/hens can participate in exciting multiplayer VR games which will immerse them in a wide range of virtual worlds.

Looking ahead in style
We maybe in the midst of summer but for fashion-forward retailers, thoughts are already turning to autumn/winter. Lesley Taylor, proprietor of Hillsborough’s New Image, is no different and has a special event planned to launch her new collections alongside other retailers in September.
On Tuesday 19 September, Lesley is inviting guests to Wentworth Woodhouse for drinks, nibbles and a chance to preview new wedding and eveningwear ranges from the likes of Condici, Ispirato and the highly sought-after Veni Infantino and Carla Ruiz. See the website for the full range of designers.
Since first opening in 1986, New Image has become renowned for its occasionwear and has become the go-to place for all those memorable events including weddings, birthdays and days at the races as well as outfits for holidays, including cruises. Matching hats, fascinators, shoes and bags enables customers to purchase the whole ensemble under one roof.
New Image also stocks a great choice of dressy casual wear and day wear that are always stylish and on trend and
perfect wardrobe pieces for more lowkey social occasions.
“It’s been a great season for hats and we’ve seen ‘hatinators’ become much more popular,” said Lesley. “More stylish than fascinators but not as restrictive as hats, they offer the best of both worlds.”
If you’re in the market for new headwear, milliner Darcie Mae regularly visits the shop and is on hand to create bespoke head pieces to ensure a perfect match, although appointments are essential.
New Image is an exclusive stockist of Spanish shoe brand, Elegant, which are available with both low or high heels as well as in half sizes too.
“I did wonder how the economy would affect business,” said Lesley. “But what I’ve found is that people have shopped early and made sure they’ve got everything well in advance of their special celebration.
“The high street is diminishing and we’re grateful to our customers for continuing to support an independent business as well as the local community.”
Although customers are welcome to
pop in to the Middlewood Road boutique at any time, if you’re shopping for an extra-special occasion Lesley advises making an appointment.
“Online shopping may offer convenience but nothing replaces oneto-service,” added Lesley. “Our customers enjoy the personal service and attention they get from an independent boutique as well as our experience. We continually work hard to maintain great levels of customer service.”
The fashion show at Wentworth Woodhouse starts at 6.30-7pm with drinks and canapes served in the Pillared Hall before guests make their way up to the Marble Saloon to be seated for the catwalk show at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £20 and include a welcome drink on arrival and can be purchased in store at New Image. All proceeds will go to Wentworth Charity.

Find the perfect dress
BRIDES OF BAKEWELL ARE READY TO EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE.
hen you walk down the aisle with your partner, you are stepping into the future together. You deserve to start that journey feeling beautiful, inside and out.
With every new bride that steps through the door of Brides of Bakewell, you’ll find a family-run business that embraces the challenge of finding you the perfect dress.
“We know that the perfect wedding doesn’t depend on the perfect wedding dress, but the perfect dress makes a bride shine,” said owner Ali Gorrod. “The perfect wedding dress should make you feel beautiful, confident, comfortable and excited to be getting married.”
Nestled in the peaceful, picturepostcard town of Bakewell in Derbyshire, the boutique offers a great selection of dresses – for brides and bridesmaids – as well as veils and other accessories.
Brides of Bakewell stock wedding dresses designed by Stella York and Morilee, with prices ranging from £725 to £1,875, offering a wide choice in terms of shape, style, design, detail and colour. For bridesmaids you’ll find a huge selection of high-quality dresses by Dessy with over 80 colours and a variety of fabrics to choose from. There’s an amazing choice of beautiful dresses!
Ali took over Brides of Bakewell eight years ago and has modernised the shop considerably creating a bright, open boutique. Spacious dressing rooms and quiet, comfortable spaces for discussion
and contemplation. All combine to create a unique, relaxed and stress-free shopping experience.
“We allow two hours for each new bridal appointment, giving brides time to browse the collection and try on a variety of designs, styles, shapes and colours,” added Ali. “We are experienced stylists and love to share our knowledge with our brides. We are excited to help them work out what suits them, how they want to look on the day and guide them to the one wedding dress that they simply don’t want to take off.”
The small, family-based team is made up of two highly experienced textile and fashion designers and a bridal-seamstress with a lifetime of practical know-how. Slowly being integrated into the team is Ali’s daughter, Molly, with the aim of her eventually taking over the wellestablished business.
Ali is very happy to see that following many wedding postponements during the pandemic there are many couples of all ages looking forward to getting married, wanting that special day and that special dress. There is a trend for brides either wanting to change the look of their dress from day to night or even for wanting two dresses on their wedding day, with two completely different looks.
The majority of dresses at Brides of Bakewell are available only to order, with a usual lead time of between 4-6 months. However, there is always the opportunity to ‘rush’ an order if necessary and there is always a selection of reduced dresses available to buy ‘off the peg’ for anyone who is a little bit last minute with their planning or for anyone who is looking for a bargain.
Wherever possible the dress fitting takes place 6-8 weeks before the wedding when the seamstress will make any necessary adjustments to make sure the dress fits, looks and feels absolutely perfect.
“There is nothing better than seeing a bride’s smiling, excited face as she leaves the shop with her dress, ready for that most fantastic and special day,” added Ali.

Melt and make new
Your wedding rings are an important part of your big day and will remain with you throughout your marriage as a symbol of the love you share and the promises you have made to each other. Increasingly couples wish to make their wedding rings extra special by adding personal touches and we have a variety of ways to help you make your rings as individual as your relationship.
We are regularly asked if we can make wedding bands out of customer’s gold. The answer is yes! Supplying metal for your rings can allow you to transfer the sentimental value of family heirlooms; many customers will use pieces of jewellery, perhaps even wedding rings, left to them by family members, giving the new rings a rich, unique and personal history. As an extra local detail, the rings will be assayed at the Sheffield Assay Office and receive the Sheffield assay mark. We can also work with your platinum or silver. Our experienced goldsmiths will melt your jewellery into a single piece and work it into your chosen shape and profile by hand. This process can be used to create a classic
band or one specially shaped to sit next to an engagement ring if required.
Your handmade ring can be further personalised by adding a pattern or setting it with diamonds: there are a wide range of options available to allow your wedding ring to match an existing engagement ring or ensure it reflects your personality and style. You may even be able to use stones from your original jewellery depending on the specifications of the design.
Many customers also choose to finish their rings with a personalised message
engraved inside the band. This could be the date of your wedding, your initials or lyrics from your first dance song; the choice is yours. You can choose from a selection of different font styles.
If you prefer to wear metals with a silver colour but want to use family gold, then our expert team of goldsmiths have some clever solutions. Using a platinum or white gold band for the main body of the ring, we can inlay a narrow strip of your gold as a stylish finishing touch. Alternatively, if you don’t want any gold on show we can use your metal as the core band with a solid white metal overlay. When the ring is being worn the gold cannot be seen but if you take the ring off you can see the extra special core beneath.
Visit us and speak to our jewellers to discuss your requirements and find out how we can make your wedding rings with a personal touch.

Messing about on the river
WHO NEEDS THE COAST WHEN YOU CAN HIT THE WATER RIGHT HERE IN SHEFFIELD AND THE PEAK DISTRICT. WE SPEAK TO THE MAN BEHIND DC OUTDOORS WHO IS BRINGING WATERSPORTS TO THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
or something that originated from surfers in the seas around Hawaii, you wouldn’t think that Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) would work as well in an urban environment. Particularly in an industrial, land-locked city like Sheffield where you have to take at least an hour’s drive just to get a glimpse of the ocean. And even then, the North Sea is a far cry from the Pacific. But for the last five years, SUP has found a settled home in Sheffield as well
as at Chesterfield Canal. As part of the Outdoor City initiative, sessions were set up by DC Outdoors at Victoria Quays where willing participants could get to grips with their equipment in the canal basin before heading off down the Tinsley Canal. Not only has it become a great way to learn a new activity but is a unique and fantastic way to explore the city.
DC Outdoors offer half-day taster sessions as well as full-day courses and
trips in both Sheffield and Chesterfield as well as the Peak District. The ones in Sheffield tend to run fortnightly on weekends during the spring/summer season (March to October) and includes all equipment hire as well as expert instruction from the DC Outdoors team.
“Victoria Quays is a great spot,” said Dan Crawford, who set up DC Outdoors in 2018. “We’ve got plenty of space to run the sessions and it’s easy to head down the canal from there.”

DC Outdoors’ SUP sessions can take up to ten people at any one time but Dan tries to limit numbers to six as this gives a better ratio between boarders and instructors. They are open to all levels of ability and all equipment is provided –boards, paddles, buoyancy aids, wet suits (if required).
“The half-day taster is a great way to try Stand Up Paddleboarding and once you’ve had a quick introduction to the equipment, after a short safety briefing we will get to grips with how to control the board whilst kneeling,” explained Dan. “Once we’ve got that sorted we’ll look at getting stood up – it is called stand up paddleboarding. When you’re feeling comfortable, you’ll put your newfound skills to use and go on a small journey.”
The progression from these taster sessions is a full-day ‘Discover’ session, which adds a bit more in-depth instruction on stroke technique and ways to be more efficient and effective.
And what happens if you fall in?
“You’ll get wet!” laughs Dan. “If you fall in, we’ll get you back on board. The
canal basin is 14ft deep and the canal between six and eight feet. Although the water might look a bit murky it’s clean enough.”
Stand Up Paddleboarding is just one of many activities Dan offers; he set up DC Outdoors with the aim of creating and providing bespoke adventure holidays. These SUP sessions, along with canoeing and kayaking, are part of his ‘off the shelf’ activities which he runs on a regular basis.
Although DC Outdoors is based in Sheffield, Dan is not restricted to one location, he can take you to the perfect venue based on your activity choice and
location, whether that’s the city centre, the Peak District or much further afield.
From a young age, Dan knew that he wanted to work as an outdoor instructor. Having visited outdoor activity centres with youth groups, and taken a walking holiday with school, Dan joined his local climbing wall in preparation and waited for the for the opportunity to start his instructor training.
At 17, Dan was accepted early on to a two-year instructor training course at the Frontier Centre in Northamptonshire, where he learnt his trade. Developing intensive skills training in archery, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, team

building and leadership, Dan put this into practice with the wide and diverse groups coming through the centre.
After gaining more experience and qualifications, newly-married Dan and his wife moved to Sheffield where he began a freelance career, working with outdoor centres throughout the area as well as some further afield in Scotland, the Lake District and Wales.
Having gained a great reputation for high quality delivery, the opportunity arose for Dan to take on a new role as head of paddlesport at Ulley Activity Centre – a centre run by a school academy. Dan delivered Outdoor GCSEs in Climbing, Archery, Orienteering, Hillwalking, Canoeing and Kayaking as well as KS3 enrichment sessions and after-school clubs. After three years, Dan’s adventure ended with voluntary redundancy as the education system faced financial squeeze.
At a crossroads in his career, Dan decided to set up DC Outdoors and has
not looked back. He’s happiest when he’s out on the water and in addition to the SUP sessions, he also runs regular canoe and kayak sessions too.
The most popular course is the ‘Zero to Hero’ kayak course, which can take you from being a complete novice to having experience your first taste of whitewater rapids.
“We start with how to turn the kayak efficiently and then look at getting the boat moving forward in a straight line,” explains Dan. “We’ll do this while taking a short trip along the Cromford Canal, for example.
“After lunch we’ll move to the River Derwent, where we’ll look at the skills needed to take on your first bit of whitewater. If you want to be ready for a whitewater adventure, this is the perfect starting point.”
DC Outdoors is not restricted to water-based activities but can run rock climbing, abseiling and weaselling sessions too.
“The Peak District is a climber’s paradise,” said Dan. “Climbers come from all over the world to climb on the famous gritstone edges of Stanage, Burbage, Froggatt and the Roaches, to name a few. When you book a climbing activity with DC Outdoors, these sublime rock faces are our playground!”
After working and delivering outdoor sessions for over 20 years, Dan has had his fair share of bumps and scrapes and can count a dislocated shoulder, fractured pelvis and snapped finger tendon as his ‘biggest’ injuries, not that he’s been deterred.
“It’s all par for the course really,” he added. “Most of them have come from climbing; you’re much safer on the water!”
If you’re keen to see another side to Sheffield and the Peak District, now is the perfect time to grab a paddle and hit the canals.

THE SPORTS UTILITY VEHICLE HAS EVOLVED, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
High performance
As the flagship offering within the new Q8 e-tron model lineup, the S version is fitted with a unique triple electric motor setup as standard that develops 503PS and 973Nm of torque. Both SUV and Sportback bodystyles of the SQ8 e-tron are available with specifications choices comprising Black Edition and Vorsprung.
Both the SQ8 e-tron and SQ8 Sportback e-tron make use of the larger 106kWh (net) battery that delivers a fully electric range of up to 276 miles (WLTP) on a single charge. Like the standard Q8 e-tron model lineup, the new S variants also debut Audi’s new corporate identity visible with the new two-dimensional Audi rings on the front and rear of the vehicle, plus the model designation now printed on the b-pillar.
The high-performance, highspecification Audi SQ8 e-tron is now on sale in the UK priced from £97,500 (OTR).
The essence of Barcelona
During the first day of the Automobile Barcelona motor show, CUPRA and SEAT revealed the name of the brand’s future urban electric car – the CUPRA Raval.
The name serves as a tribute to the Raval neighbourhood, a district in the heart of Barcelona, and is one that ROSALÍA’s alphabet campaign hinted at.
“The Raval is one of the most surprising parts of Barcelona. And today, we are proud that the brand’s future urban electric car will have its name and represent its spirit. Just as we did with the CUPRA Born, we now want to express the essence of the Raval and continue to inspire the world from Barcelona,” explained Wayne Griffiths, CEO of SEAT and CUPRA.
Bridging the gap
Honda has revealed its all-new ZRV, the all-new C-segment SUV that offers the perfect blend of sophisticated styling, practicality and a purposeful driving experience. Lining up between HR-V and CR-V, the ZR-V is aimed at young, image conscious buyers who seek a stylish, powerful and fun to drive vehicle that can seamlessly integrate into their life. Beneath the sleek, stylish exterior is Honda’s full hybrid technology that shares DNA with the multi-award winning all-new Civic e:HEV. Optimised for the ZR-V, the e:HEV’s efficient yet powerful 2.0litre, four-cylinder direct injection Atkinson cycle engine works in conjunction with two motors to provide punchy, responsive acceleration.
Fresh thinking
Dacia’s famed fresh thinking and valuefor-money approach has revolutionised the seven-seat family car sector with the introduction of the Dacia Jogger, thanks to its unrivalled versatility that blends the practicality of an estate car with the spaciousness of an MPV and the styling of an SUV.
Generous proportions and rugged styling ensure the Jogger is always ready for adventure, backed up by a series of clever touches and smart thinking, from the ingenious modular roof rails to the innovative Media Control system that places the smartphone at the centre of the car’s multimedia experience.
The Jogger is powered by a choice of Dacia’s proven TCe 110 turbocharged petrol engine – delivering willing performance and excellent fuel economy – or the brand’s first hybrid powertrain in the Jogger HYBRID 140.
It’s priced from just £18,295 OTR.
