If you don’t like the idea of your wedding dress being stuck in a box, upcycling can give it a whole new lease of life. Maria Iliffe looks at sentimental ideas for you to consider.

edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important.

It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory.

Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the fashion industry. With people increasingly realising

the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was once pictured on the green carpet in an upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam.

Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so.

There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

A touch of lace

To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace,

statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.

Same but different

One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown.

Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas).

Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/ cocktail look.

Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.

Wear it well

Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies

Fabric repurposed

With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration.

The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go.

Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Small and beautiful

Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. Cuddly toys

As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy.

One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress.

Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued.

Prithi Raj is true to the regional cuisines of India and Bangladesh, writes Richard Abbey.

rithi Raj are seven-time winners of Westside’s ‘Best Indian Restaurant’ and these awards take pride of place next to the bar in the Ecclesall Road restaurant.

PThese accolades are testament to Prithi Raj’s consistency over the years and go a long way to explaining why they have such a loyal following within the city. Indeed, even on a Tuesday night the restaurant was plenty busy with customers, many of which were clearly return visitors.

Prithi Raj has its ‘celebrity’ followers too, with recent customers including Dan Walker and his Strictly Come Dancing partner Nadia Bychkova, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill and comedian Jon Richardson.

No visit to an Indian restaurant is complete without poppadoms (£1.40 each) and a pickle tray (£3.50) to start and Prithi Raj’s version arrived promptly, were deliciously crisp with plenty of pickles to choose from - mango chutney, onion, mix pickle, Raj red sauce and mint sauce.

What followed was a treat for the senses. Raj king prawns (£8.50) arrived on a sizzling platter that not only looked, smelled and sounded amazing but tasted every bit as good too. Cooked in a clay oven, they had a slightly smoky, spicy

surprises. Meaty and subtly spiced, incredibly moreish and the perfect introduction to our dinner at Prithi Raj.

After our seafood-inspired starters we went meat-heavy for main courses with dishes of jal jhinga (£14.50) and akbori sag masala (£14.50). The former, cooked with lamb, was a chef’s special and was a rich, fragrant dish cooked with garlic, chillies, tomatoes, green peppers,

fenugreek leaves and caramelised onions. It delivered plenty of heat and paired well with our accompaniments of pilau rice

If you’re under 23 and a rising star in the kitchen, you could be our next Young Chef

o you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging Young Chef of the Year 2024.

Once again, the contest will be held at the MSK Academy Kitchen at The by Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader of Catering and Hospitality, who will be assembling a panel of expert judges.

Len and his team have devised a brief that will challenge the most skilled of chefs but one that will allow them to be creative and truly show off their skills. Entrants will be invited to take part in a MasterChef-style cooking competition, provisionally set for 2 September, and will be asked to cook a main course and dessert in two hours – but there will be a caveat, more of which will be revealed in future

issues of this magazine.

region and all chefs must be under the age of 23 on 1 August 2024.

The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and gives each of the shortlisted chefs a boost by placing them in the spotlight.

The results will be announced at the 2024 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing –on Monday 28 October.

After three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.

This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.

Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and

event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

dream of taking his family on a road trip around Scotland.

ike a lot of visitors to Scotland, my previous incursions north of the border had been limited to the two main cities – Glasgow and Edinburgh. But as good as they are, they offer only a taste of what the rest of the country has to offer.

Keen to explore, I talked my family into taking, some might say, an epic road trip and over eight days we covered in excess of 400 miles, from Dumfries and Glasgow in the south-west up to Nairn and Inverness in the north, Aviemore and the Cairngorms in the middle and Edinburgh in the south-east.

We saw lochs, mountains and glens, experienced snow, sunshine and rain, and loved every minute. We walked – averaging 13,500 steps daily – cycled, and drove our way around the most stunning scenery

which took us over one of Scotland’s bestknown and picturesque roads – the Glencoe pass. This stunning section of road takes you past the ‘Three Sisters’ and mountain resort and is simply breath-taking.

Fort William sits on the banks of Loch Linnhe and is backed by the Grampian mountain range, of which Ben Nevis stands the tallest. It’s the perfect spot from which to explore, whether you’re into walking

A two-hour drive north from Fort William to Nairn was anything but tedious as the scenery provided a welcome

Nairn is home to Crerar Hotel’s Golf View Hotel & Spa, which overlooks the Moray Firth and is sandwiched between two quality golf courses – Nairn Golf Club and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.

We were wowed by its beachfront location and the quality of the accommodation. Our sea view ‘feature’

rooms were spacious and luxurious with complimentary cold drinks and chocolate treats as well as Nespresso coffee machines

The treatment rooms for the Coast Spa were fully booked on the day of our visit but we did make use of the pool as well as the sauna, steam and hydrotherapy rooms.

Breakfast at Golf View is taken in the Hickory restaurant and is served a la carte. As well as pastries, fruit and charcuterie, we tucked into very good dishes of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, smoked haddock and French toast, washed down with very good Scottish tea.

From Nairn we headed south to Aviemore, which sits at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. But before we

explored the town, popular with snow and outdoor enthusiasts, we headed a little further to Kingussie and the Highland Wildlife Park.

Part of RZSS (Royal Zoological Society of Scotland), the park is home to 19 different species of animal including wolverines, amur tigers, polar bears, snow leopards and grey wolves. The park also has a drive-through reserve where you can get close to European bison, red deer, Przewalski’s horse and vicuna. It was a great way to spend a few hours and son.

In Aviemore we added a little adventure to our holiday by hiring bikes. In Your Element (IYE), based in Rothiemurchus, has a full range of bikes to hire, including brand new e-bikes, and offers other activities such canoeing, white water sledging, gorge walking and axe throwing. IYE was established in 2003 and has

activity bases in the Inverness and Loch Ness area, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Fort William and Lochaber and around Loch Tay.

My wife and I took advantage of the e-bikes, which were Marin Rift Zone E1s and had 11 gears as well as a 630WH battery, whilst my children had conventional hardtail Marin mountain bikes. Staff at IYE set up the suspension for each rider and gave us a run through of how they worked, kitted us out with helmets and then sent us on our way. There are some pre-determined trails to follow; we opted for the 13-mile round trip to Glenmore which followed an old logging trail and was relatively easy going on mainly gravel track. Cold and wet weather proved to be no obstacle and we thoroughly enjoyed our three hours or so heading through the forests and glens of the Cairngorms with the snow-covered peaks as our backdrop.

From Aviemore we headed further south on the A9, literally driving through the clouds to arrive at Fonab Castle Hotel just outside Pitlochry. Nestled in the

property is the height of luxury and has been lovingly restored to combine historic features with contemporary touches. Complementing the 42 bedrooms is a 3 AA Rosette restaurant and a spa complex. We stayed in the newer Woodland Wing

Faskally and loved all the comforts it provided, including Egyptian cotton sheets, Nespresso coffee machines and toiletries from Temple Spa. Each guest was provided with a robe and slippers and there was even an umbrella in each room in case you wanted to venture outside – much-needed on our visit due to the wet and windy weather.

Two dining options are available at Fonab; the more formal Sandemans restaurant which is housed in the original part of 19th century castle and serves a seven-course tasting menu, or 1892 on the Loch, a more relaxed brasserie-style restaurant. We opted for the latter and tucked into excellent dishes of Cumbrae oysters, pumpkin and sage ravioli, Loch Etive trout and Perthshire red deer. We

heading upstairs to the bar to sample some local whiskies – I recommend the Edradour, a small batch whisky made just down the road in Pitlochry which is aged in Oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.

From Pitlochry we headed further south to Edinburgh, crossing the Forth road bridge, and spent a couple of days exploring the shops and tourist sites before heading home.

f we told you that some of the UK’s best bands and artists were heading to South Yorkshire this summer, housed in a giant big top complete with all the fun of the circus, would you believe us?

Well, in late August that’s exactly what’s happening as Rock N Roll Circus heads back to the Don Valley Bowl following a hugely successful launch last year where thousands of music fans witnessed epic live performances from the likes of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Self Esteem, Natalia Imbruglia, Happy Mondays and many more.

The event is a multi-day festival mixing the best of live music with the best of circus entertainment and will this year be opened by hometown hero Richard Hawley on Thursday 29 August.
