Sheffield’s hottest restaurant YOU’LL FIND ITALIAN-INSPIRED DISHES WITH A MODERN TWIST AT RAFFINA BY REECE ELLIOTT. ince its launch just two months ago, MasterChef star Reece Elliott's Ecclesall Road residence has been getting rave reviews and is already the city's most soughtafter reservation. Reece elevates Italianinspired dishes with a modern twist with his new, updated menu. Famed for its iconic building and vibrant, relaxed atmosphere, Raffina by Reece Elliott takes pride in creating incredible food from fresh ingredients and partnerships with local suppliers. This ideology has formed the foundations of Reece's new menu. Diners can expect fresh seafood starters which look as good as they taste, like the sea bream ceviche with avocado, blood orange, fennel and radish, alongside vegetarian and vegan highlights such as the wild mushroom and truffle arancini. These crispy, coated risotto balls are a long-standing staple of Sicilian cuisine and do their part in bringing the authentic taste of Italy to the heart of Sheffield. The undisputed crown jewel of Reece's new menu is his lamb loin crusted with pistachio and herbs served alongside pressed lamb ragu & potato terrine,Yorkshire asparagus, pea and mint. It pairs perfectly with a glass of the Critèra Primitivo red – pushed to choose a favourite dish, this is what Reece recommends. Italy's true triumph has not been forgotten, either. The stunning dessert menu offers diners classics with a modern twist, like its golden chocolate fondant with rhubarb sorbet, alongside unique sweet dishes like the elderflower and mascarpone semifreddo.

Completing a full dinner itinerary is Raffina's cocktail club. Two cocktails for £12 are available between the hours of 3-6pm offers diners the perfect opportunity to sample Raffina’s classic

and original cocktails with a pre-dinner drink. Whether you're staying for dinner or heading out into Sheffield, it's the perfect way to set the tone for an evening in the Steel City.

“The undisputed crown jewel of Reece’s new menu is his lamb loin crusted with pistachio and herbs. It pairs perfectly with a glass of Primitivo.” Alongside the new dinner menu, Raffina offers a full daytime offer. Italian coffee and luxurious treats are served all day, while the fabulous brunch and lunch menu is ideal for a relaxed business meeting or catch-up with friends and family on Ecclesall Road. If you are looking for the ultimate social gathering, Raffina is the place for the ever-popular, bottomless brunch. However you like your eggs, you can enjoy a range of classics and twists, from delicious duck and sweet potato pancakes to a traditional Italian antipasto board for two. Setting Raffina apart from the rest is the inclusion of cocktails on the bottomless brunch menu. Whether a pornstar martini is your go-to, or you take your espresso in martini form, four cocktails join prosecco, mimosas, and Raffina Lager on the menu. Discover the full menu at raffina.co.uk

From family legacies to those carving their own path, we look at their secrets to success as well as their future plans. “Lovely family firm, all the staff both in the office (especially Lauren), and the workmen that did the work were easy to deal with and dealt with queries quickly. Leah designed a lovely kitchen and utility with everything we wanted and nothing we did not want. She made some suggestions we had not thought of and it looks great and is very much user friendly.” ~ Dee Cavanagh S17 “Excellent service, excellent staff and AMAZING kitchen! My husband and I are so chuffed with our new kitchen/diner. We had 2 walls knocked through, a new wall and door built and a new kitchen installed. We could not be happier with the whole process from start to finish. Everyone at DKD are professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to care about giving us the best results.” ~ Francesca Makey S11

What to ask an estate agent WHETHER YOU’RE BUYING OR SELLING HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK. BY BLENHEIM PARK ESTATES’ EMMA BROCKLEBANK. hen you are looking to sell your home, it can be a difficult task to compare and decide on which estate agent is best for you and your property. It can also seem overwhelming when you are viewing a house as to what questions you should ask the vendor or sales consultant to ensure the potential home is right for you. Therefore, below we have outlined some of the key questions to ask an estate agent from both selling and buying perspectives.

W

SELLING What are your fees? The first question any seller is likely to ask themselves is; how much money is it going to cost me to sell my home? Most estate agents will differ in the fees they charge, however this can also be a reflection on the service you may receive. The national average, as of 2022, for estate agent fees in the UK is 1.18 per cent +VAT* (*statistic sourced from movewise.co.uk) , but of course, there is more to selling houses than simply fees. Choosing an agent solely on the lowest fee can be tempting, however it is important to fully understand the level of service and extent of marketing that you will get and determine how this could effect the sale of your property.

How will you market my home? In recent years, there have been a lot of advancements in the marketing methods that estate agents can offer, it is no longer just a shop window and newspaper advertising like it was many years ago! A good estate agent will spend time, energy and money on the marketing of your home. They will also

be proactive in ensuring your home reaches the maximum amount of buyers through not only listing on Rightmove but also other property portals, their own website, social media promotions and digital/magazine advertising.

How will the negotiations on my home be handled? Estate agents are there to maximise the value of what is most likely your biggest asset, and not just tell you to accept the first offer that is placed on the table. Experienced negotiators will work hard on your behalf to secure the highest possible price for you and this is where an agent with a higher fee will earn it several times over.

Will my sale be managed beyond accepting an offer? When an offer has been accepted, it is important that an agent’s work doesn’t stop there. Tying up a property sale can be a long and frustrating process for both the seller and buyer. It is imperative that your estate agent will be checking up weekly on the progress of your sale with solicitors to make sure there is no outstanding information required or any other matters that could hold up the sale.

BUYING Is there a chain involved? Knowing the seller’s position in the market is just as important as your

buying position. A long chain can prolong the buying process further as there are more people/properties to manage and more pieces that need to fall into place. Although, a chain shouldn’t completely put you off buying a home if it is the one for you, it may just mean that you could need to wait longer for that moving day!

What’s included in the sale? It is always good to ask the sales consultant showing you around what is included in the sale. This is because when it gets to the offer stage, some items in the house may be negotiable, which would mean you need to pay extra or stipulate within your offer for that specific item/s be included. It is also important to confirm the property’s boundary to make sure you know exactly what you are buying. Sorting these details out in the early stages can help avoid confusion later down the line and in terms of fixtures and fittings, can also give you an idea of what you will need to purchase for your next home.

Is there anything I should know about the area and what is it like? Estate agents have good knowledge of the local areas in which they operate. Therefore, asking about the location of the property might highlight some details that you didn’t know, such as which schools fall into the catchment, great local restaurants or popular outdoor spaces like parks and walking trails. It is also worth asking if there are any plans for development in the vicinity. www.sheffieldvibe.com 11

EDUCATION

Life after exams GAYNOR JONES, PRINCIPAL OF HOPE VALLEY COLLEGE IN HOPE, DERBYSHIRE WRITES THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF EDUCATION FOCUSED ARTICLES. This morning, I led an assembly with our current Year 11 cohort of 15-16 year olds during which we talked about the upcoming exam season. As I spoke to this group of 115 young people, who are on the verge of the most academically testing time in their education, I tried to remember how it felt to be leaving Year 11 and taking my next step. I recall a lack of understanding about how the decisions I made then may affect my future. Our young people in Year 11 have already made a choice about their next steps. Many of them have chosen to continue studying in Key Stage 5 (at a sixth form or college) or through an apprenticeship. At Hope Valley College, our Year 11 students are lucky to have a range of excellent options for their next step including having priority admissions status to Silverdale Sixth Form. Hopefully, the advice of parents, carers, older siblings, friends and teachers has allowed them to choose their next steps wisely. During my career in education, for many years I enjoyed teaching A Level English. I was also an A Level ‘marker’ which provided a greater insight into the expectations of Key Stage 5 examinations. A Levels are challenging, and they require a sustained and consistent approach. Our Year 11 students often talk about their surprise at the ‘step up’ to study A Levels, many agreeing that they wished they had developed effective study habits more fully in Year 11.

T

As teachers, we try to prepare them for university study; the skills and techniques for which will also stand them in good stead for their working lives. From the outset, we seek to provide them with the independence they need to use their initiative; in this way lies success. Students of Year 12 age welcome the freedom of sixth form or the workplace. These feelings are so important for everyone but especially for younger people, whatever their ambitions and expectations. Our own beautiful site is home to Hope Valley Pathways, our Post-16 provision which supports a small number of students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). There is a growing need for the sort of provision we offer and our aspirations for these students are exactly the same as for all other students in school. Our aim is to

provide opportunities for those young people to continue to develop independence and autonomy. Some of our students undertake supported internships alongside qualifications, to equip them for an independent life and career. Our aim is to be an inclusive school where everyone can succeed whatever their starting point. As Year 11 students all over the country begin the exam season, I hope that they can focus on the future that will open up for them after their exams. The realisation of their aspirations and dreams awaits.

A Sheffield treasure ATKINSONS STANDS PROUDLY AS THE ONLY REMAINING DEPARTMENT STORE IN THE CITY. THIS YEAR IT CELEBRATES ITS 150-YEAR ANNIVERSARY. RICHARD ABBEY DISCUSSES ITS HISTORY, AND LEGACY, WITH MANAGING DIRECTOR NICHOLAS ATKINSON.

f you’re from Sheffield, chances are you have fond memories of Atkinsons department store. For me, growing up in the 1980s, it’s of 2p rides on Muffin the Mule (which is still there by the way), Saturday trips for our weekly shop in Sainsbury’s or, if I was really lucky, an ice cream sundae in Massarellas. This year, Atkinsons is celebrating its 150-year anniversary. It seems apt to be celebrating the longevity of a Sheffield treasure in the year we are also celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Whether Atkinsons’ festivities will reach the levels set by Her Majesty is yet to be confirmed but they will be marking the occasion with special offers throughout the year, including a big giveaway - you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled for that. Following the recent closures of Debenhams and John Lewis, Atkinsons remains the only department store in the city and also remains defiantly independent, overseen by the fourth generation of the Atkinson family, Nicholas, who himself is celebrating his 50-year anniversary at the beloved store. Atkinsons was started by Nicholas’s great-grandfather John in 1872, starting life as a small drapery store at 90 South Street, the former name for The Moor. John originally came from a farming background near York and came down to Sheffield to seek his fortune. Over the years, and before the turn of the century, the reputation of his two-

windowed store grew and he was able to purchase neighbouring properties before amalgamating them into one magnificent ‘proper’ department store. It was something like Sheffield had never seen before; the three-floor property had a huge glass atrium on the roof to let light down on to all the floors and it was full of plants, so much so they had to employ an in-store horticulturalist. Its myriad departments extended far beyond the buttons and braid John originally started selling when he set out. John sadly passed away in 1929 but the business remained in the family with Nicholas’s grandfather and brother, Harold and Walter, taking over before his father Peter and uncle John joined the business after serving during the Second World War. Unfortunately, John died early and his father was left to run Atkinsons solely until Nicholas joined the business himself in 1972. To keep the business evolving, Peter struck up a friendship with John Sainsbury and persuaded him to open one of his grocery stores connected to Atkinsons. At the time, Sainsbury’s were largely unheard of in northern England so it was something of coup. The supermarket opened in 1974 and remained on site until it’s closure in 2000. “My father and John [Sainsbury] became good friends and they built their supermarket, which was on our first floor level, and that was massive boost in the arm for us,” Nicholas recalls. “Sadly,

on 1 April 2000, the area, which had 26 checkout points, closed and we lost two million customers overnight per year We took over the space and the car park, diversified and increased the number of departments we had. The rest is history. It’s never been an easy ride.” The loss of Sainsbury’s is just one of many setbacks that Atkinsons has overcome in its 150-year history. Perhaps the most significant was the devastation caused during the Blitz of December 1940 when an incendiary bomb completely levelled the store. “We were left with nothing, absolutely nothing. The only thing that was left were the pennies in the weighing machine,” said Nicholas. It was catastrophic for the family but, undeterred, they vowed to start over again setting up a temporary HQ at St Judes Church in Milton Street. It wasn’t until 1960 that they were able to rebuild the store on its former site. Under his stewardship Nicholas has also had to contend with the opening of Meadowhall, which drew potential customers away from the city centre, and the worldwide recession of 2007-2009. But he credits his most difficult time as the last two years and the impact of the pandemic. “That first year, 2020, when we had the first lockdown, we were forced to close for 26 weeks out of 52, so half the year. Nobody can make a viable situation out of those kinds of figures,” he said. “And of course none of us had experienced this before, we didn’t have a clue what was around the corner. “Then we came into our second year and we had another 12 weeks when we were forced to close and that was bad enough. When we got back, which was about March time last year, we had quite a good run, people were relaxing a bit, and then we had this new variant, Omicron, and the whole thing started all over again. The restrictions came back , the fear came back, and it was the runup to Christmas. It had a massive impact and just wrote another year off.” “Although the government funding was pretty good generally speaking, and you have to be thankful for that, it has been an extraordinarily difficult time,” continued Nicholas. “We’re very fortunate, but it’s come at a cost. We’ve come out of Covid leaner, keener, fitter… it focuses you. But it took its toll on everybody.” And Covid didn’t just impact Atkinsons but the city centre as a whole, although Nichols feels very fortunate to

remain at the heart of The Moor. “While we were closed we had the demise of Debenhams and John Lewis leaving the city, which wasn’t good news at all. If you’re going to have a strong city centre you need to have shops that people want to come to,” he said. “The Moor is alive and kicking and has had significant investment. We’re very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. “This has come after a lot of hard work, it hasn’t just happened. I always remember doing a [Yorkshire] television interview on a rubble site at a strange place called Meadowhall in 1989, just before building started, and the Professor of Retail at Sheffield University didn’t hesitate in telling everybody that The Moor wouldn’t exist in five years time. I think that comment galvanised me into making sure that didn’t happen. Nicholas puts the success of Atkinson’s longevity down to the same ethos his great-grandfather had when the shop first opened - quality, value and service. “People who shop here love the experience, it’s something they enjoy because people talk to them,” explains Nicholas. “Retail lost that years ago but we managed to keep it. I think that’s a lot of the reason why we’re still here.” He is of course backed by a tremendous team, many of which have been there for many years too. He credits them with all playing a part in the success of Atkinsons and feels the company is in safe hands for many more years. “The people who work here are as committed as any family member and I see them as family,” he beams. “We’ll move forward that way. They’re a great bunch and I try and keep on top of

Managing director Nicholas Atkinson

what’s happening to them, both at work and personally. It’s not an effort it’s an enjoyment. There’s complete trust here and that’s why it‘s a family business and it’s very nice that is still run like that.” If the last two years have shown us anything it’s that shopping local and supporting your independents, however big or small, has never been more important. It’s the only way they will continue to trade and let’s be honest, we’ve all missed that personal touch so championed by stores like Atkinsons. Today it occupies 75,000 sq ft of retail space, has 40 departments, three restaurants and 440 parking spaces. It’s a true Sheffield treasure and should be cherished for many years to come. “We’ve had to adapt our business to what’s going on outside,” concludes Nicholas. “At the end of the day, this business is about making a profit and that has become increasingly difficult over the years. But I feel that with the changes we’ve made since the start of Covid, we’re in the best position for moving forward.” Here’s to the next 150 years. www.sheffieldvibe.com 47

They work across all sectors and also carry out TM44 reports for both simple and complex cooling systems. Like any business, it is the way that you pull together as a team in tough times that gets you through.” The most rewarding thing for Lisa is seeing her staff develop and grow. “I have seen staff come in as apprentices, bought their own cars, houses, spread their wings and some are now growing families and helping their parents,” she added. “We became an Employee Owned Trust last year and that was probably the best thing ever for me.” Visit www.airmaster.uk.com to find out more.

Ashoka The much-loved Ecclesall Road restaurant was was started in 1967 by the inimitable Kamal Ahmed. Rahul Amin bought the business from him in 2004. “We aim to serve delicious curries paired with genuine hospitality for our guests,” said Rahul. “We’ve got regulars that have been coming for three generations and hope the tradition continues with new customers we meet.” Rahul attributes the success of the restaurant, and its longevity, to a genuine passion for hospitality and a consistency in everything they do. Recessions and Covid have been tough periods they have had to weather - like many hospitality businesses - but they are positive for the future. “We want to try and position the restaurant to trade positively for another 55 years,” added Rahul. “Hearing guests tell us about their experiences, and then seeing them bring other friends or families to dine with us. It shows a level of trust and expectation they place with us. We sincerely hope to match and exceed these.” Call 0114 268 3029 or visit www.ashoka1967.com to book a table or view their menu.

FROM FAMILY LEGACIES TO WINNING PARTNERSHIPS, THESE LONG-STANDING BUSINESSES ARE AN EXAMPLE TO EVERYONE.

The Famous Sheffield Shop Ltd In 2023 The Famous Sheffield Shop celebrates 40 years of trading from the same location on Ecclesall Road. The business has faced many challenges over the years. Opened during a recession by founder Don Alexander, a Global banking crisis under the ownership of Paul Iseard and now third owner Jane Summers taking charge in 2020 at the onset of a pandemic. Despite the threats the shop continues to go from strength to strength. With local support and a worldwide online reach selling Sheffield made gifts and products that were the foundation of Sheffield’s cutlery and metal working reputation across the world. As a specialist independent retailer nothing can be more rewarding than welcoming our customers back to the shop. Where Sheffielders and visitors can browse the diverse range of products Sheffield has to offer. With knowledgeable help at hand from Jane and Craig, Jordan, Joanne and Sam for the full Sheffield Shop experience. No doubt there will be more challenges ahead. However with a new generation of cutlers, silversmiths and metal workers the future looks bright. As it has proved successful for the last 40 years our aim is to continue to promote and sell the very best of Sheffield craftsmanship. Ferndale Garden Centre Since the inception of garden centres in the 1960s, the term ‘garden centre’ has come to mean anywhere that sells items for the garden. Today Britain has a wide variety of outlets claiming to be garden centres but many do not live up to the standards of modern specialist horticultural retailers that our customers expect. Ferndale Garden Centre is a true specialist garden retailer with added department to complement the garden ranges. They are horticulturists at heart and by training – and this year celebrate their 40th anniversary. The changes since opening in July 1982 have been immense and have grown with customer expectations. Ferndale sell more garden and house plants than ever before in a wider range and offer as many new varieties as possible as they become available. The big difference from 1982 to now is that running an independent family run garden centre has much higher overheads than ever before and being busy 12 months of the year is the only way to make sure Ferndale employe specialist garden advisers all year round, even when you don’t want advice and ideas, such as the depths of winter. Call 01246 412763 or visit ferndalegardencentre.co.uk to find out more.

The Greedy Greek The Greedy Greek Deli is owned by the Mouzakis family and opened on Sharrow Vale Road in 2002 - this year they are celebrating 20 years in business. In that time it has continued to grow and evolve into more than just a deli. Today’s business consists of a small production kitchen near Chesterfield where their Greek chefs make authentic, fresh, homemade Greek food. The deli is buzzing, keeping Dennis and the team on their toes with yummy wraps and delicious Greek meals – a chance to dine Mediterranean style. Working with Just-Eat and their own app, they provide an extensive delivery service. The family also have The Deli Direct, which caters for parties, weddings, business lunches, meetings, and now outside events with their mobile unit. Hallamshire Physio Established in 2003, Hallamshire Physiotherapy is a private practice in Sheffield. It provides high quality treatment and rehabilitation for a range of clients with musculoskeletal, neurological, balance and other complex problems. The emphasis at the clinic is on a movement and exercise based approach and problem solving to get people active and returning to function. “The secret to our success has been to recruit experienced staff with an excellent knowledge base who not only make you feel at ease but who will also get to the root cause of your problems,” said Karen Hodgson. “We have also based our practise on recommendations from clients and other health professionals and this has developed our growing reputation within physiotherapy in Sheffield.” Whilst Covid affected their services, Hallamshire Physiotherapy explored other ways to deliver rehabilitation - this included online consultations and exercise groups as well as discussion forums. “Even when we were able to open our doors again we have still continued to use these alternative methods which has allowed us to reach people on a national level,” added Karen. Future plans are to develop their exercise groups and rehabilitation. Call 0114 267 1223 or visit www.hallamshirephysiotherapy.com to find out more.

Hancock & Read Hancock & Read have provided a prestigious design and manufacturing service exceeding over 35 years now and are renowned around Dore, Whirlow, Hope Valley and other areas of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire for their quality commercial and residential furniture. “Our policy for delivering customer satisfaction is clearly appreciated as the majority of our projects arise from repeat custom or recommendation,” said Mark Read. “Today, word of mouth has pushed us further afield allowing us to work in areas such as Manchester, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.” Speaking of the stresses related to running your own business, Mark added: “We have weathered a few recessions over the past 37 years, changing with the times, from a commercial bar fitting firm to a high-end residential furniture manufacturer. Recently the Covid pandemic has been an entirely new challenge which we have endured and are pleased to be back to work, busier then ever and loving what we do.” The company, based on Rugby Street, pride themselves on their long-standing relationships with their customers. Hearth and Home Ltd John Gosling established Hearth and Home over 40 years ago. It remains a family-owned and operated fireplace showroom selling woodburning, gas and electric stoves, gas and electric fires, and wood stone and marble surrounds. John works in the showroom whilst his wife, Becky, works in the office. His father and brother run the fitting company which carries out most of their installations. He puts the secret of their success down to their reputation. “We generate most of our work through recommendation from our customers which is amazing for us and means that hopefully we will carry on for years to come,” he said. Like for many businesses, Covid was a difficult time for Hearth and Home but John feels they have weathered the storm. “It’s cliché to say but every customer that purchases from us is helping support a local business and that means everything to me,” he added. “My dad is wanting to go part-time so we will be expanding the fitting team in the no to distant future. There’s no plans for the showroom as we extended the showroom just before the pandemic so we’ll just carry on as we have been.” Visit their showroom on London Road, call 0114 255 9688, or visit www.fireplaces-in-sheffield.co.uk to find out more. 50 www.sheffieldvibe.com

As a business, IT Business Solutions have we have grown in knowledge and ability to match the developments in technology. “We consider ourselves to be just an extension of the team for our clients, always happy and willing to help,” said James Simpson, who set up the business with Marcos Brayley in 1997. “We pride ourselves on developing our relationships which we feel are essential to deliver a highly efficient and personalised service.” The specialist business is now based on Ecclesall Road and credit their success to simply doing what they say they are going to do. This includes really caring about the working relationships with clients and seeing all tasks (large and small) through to a successful conclusion. When asked about the most challenging and rewarding parts of their business, James added: “Of course the onset of the pandemic was a worrying time for us, just like all small businesses. Not knowing what lay in store for us or our clients and how they would be able to conduct their business. “However, the way our team responded in rapidly assisting our client base with mobilising secure remote working and providing uninterrupted support throughout these challenging periods proved to be one of our most rewarding too.” Find IT Business Solutions online at www.itbs.net or give them a call on 0114 268 0092.

Oriental Rug Shop The Oriental Rug Shop is a family business that retail authentic handmade rugs and carpets. Kian Hezaveh is the fourth generation of his family to trade in rugs and carpets after the business was established in 1880 by his great grandfather. He runs the shop alongside his wife Julie and their son Michael who becomes the fifth generation of the family business. “As purveyors we travel extensively throughout the year to source our stock and are also direct importers goods from a variety of different weaving nations such as China, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India to name a few,” said Kian. “Moreover, we have recently expanded our business to include in house services such professional cleaning, restoration and repair work. “Our stock of over 7,000 individual pieces ranges from antiques to contemporary and from mat size (40cm x 40cm) to oversized carpets (7mx5m). Whether you’re looking for a beautiful decorative piece or a nomadic tribal one, we have the variety for all tastes.” Opening in Sheffield in 1979 was a big risk but one that was ultimately worth taking. “Although our family have been trading in this market in Iran for long time, branching out to the UK market was challenging,” added Kian. “There was no guarantee that our products would be popular in Sheffield and, if they were, popular enough to sustain long term. It took a lot of time and long days to establish ourselves.” Call 0114 255 2240 or visit www.orientalrugshop.co.uk to find out more.

Williams Electrical Williams Electrical was established in 1905 by Karen Putland's great-grandfather Walter Williams and has been in the heart of Woodseats ever since. Karen represents the fifth generation of the family and she continues to evolve the business, which started out selling bicycles, radios and model railways. "We also had a car inspection pit and pertrol pump in the rear of the building as Williams repaired Richardson cars, which were built in Sheffield, during the war," added Karen. "As technology changed the same batteries that we used in bicycle lights were used in radios and so a new product line was added and our evolution began. Now we are proud to be the area's leading independent specialist supplier of top brand electrical goods, aiming to offer the best value for money deals on the high street." Being a family business, customer service is at the very core of Williams' success. But there have been challenges along the way. "The war years were a challenge for everyone, and then the three-day working week of the seventies when we had to trade with candles and in near darkness because of the blackouts," recalls Karen. "The financial crisis of 2008 was a challenging time and changed the retail landscape permanently and then came the pandemic…" The outlook remains positive for Williams Electrical; no doubt they will look froward to the challenges of the next 100 years! Towsure Towsure was founded in 1967 by Stuart Hogg who a few years earlier had served an apprenticeship within the steel industry in Sheffield. After working in various roles in both manufacturing and sales, Stuart spotted an opportunity with the emerging popularity of caravanning so decided to set up on his own in the towbar industry. By the early 1970s, the number of people going caravanning was booming. Everyone who had a caravan needed a car to pull it, and that car needed a towbar. At first, he started to fit towbars from his family home in Wisewood but due to the increasing demand, and the neighbours being annoyed with a growing number of parked cars on the street, he bought a small premises in Holme Lane, Hillsborough to operate the new business from. These new premises provided not only a workshop and fitting bay but also a small store that could be open to the public to sell from. To complement the towbar fittings, trailers parts were also sold along with small camping trailers. During the early nineties, Stuart’s son Andrew entered the business and started work on the expansion of the product range and re designing the mail order catalogue adding over 300 pages cramped full of accessories. The mail order catalogue grew each year with the latest “must have” accessory gadgets for the camper and became digital in 1999. Towsure still remains a family run business, operating for over 50 years and was pleased to welcome Jessica (Andrew’s daughter) the third generation into the business during 2018 taking it further in to the digital age of social media and beyond and retaining the company’s core family values.Visit www.towsure.com to find out more. 56 www.sheffieldvibe.com

PD Warrior Live Brave with Parkinsons

Hallamshire Physiotherapy have introduced online PD Warrior sessions

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS UNIQUE PROGRAMME, DELIVERED BY HALLAMSHIRE PHYSIOTHERAPY. D Warrior is a unique programme of exercise to help people newly diagnosed with Parkinsons. It originated in Australia and was developed to help people to slow down the progression of their disease. Parkinsons is a progressive neurological disorder that affects approximately 145,000 people in the UK.The main symptoms are tremor, rigidity, and slowing movements. Symptoms and the speed at which the condition develops will differ from person to person and many people will had had symptoms for years before diagnosis. There is currently no cure for Parkinsons and treatment is through medication, physiotherapy and activity. The PD Warrior programme is an advanced exercise programme that incorporates both physical and cognitive activity for people in the early stages of Parkinsons. At its heart, PD Warrior is an intensive circuit programme designed to fight the symptoms. PD Warrior is supported by a growing body of evidence that shows that intensive, high effort, complex exercise has the potential to slow the progression of your symptoms by using neuroplasticity - your brain’s natural ability to re-organise its pathways and connections, much like rewiring. By rewiring the brain you can help people to move more freely with less conscious thought. The key to achieving this rewiring includes being consistent and using the right exercise prescription. It is important not to wait for symptoms to impact upon daily life before taking up the correct type of exercise. So why is PD Warrior different from other forms of exercise? PD Warrior uses seven core principles: • High Effort - working hard • Power - big powerful movements

P

62 www.sheffieldvibe.com

• Frequency - exercise must be done daily • Specificity - specific to the individual • Meaning - relate to activities you find challenging • Complexity - dual and multi tasking • Fun!

What happens at Hallamshire Physiotherapy? An assessment with one of our PD Warrior instructors is carried out to ensure suitability for the programme and also to obtain baseline measures on areas such as gait, balance and motor skills. Following the assessment one to one sessions are required to educate and coach people in the exercises and the principles. Then comes the ten-week challenge. This is a circuit class once per week held at our exercise facility at 863 Ecclesall Road or in our Chesterfield base. At the completion of the ten-week challenge there will be a review assessment to compare the baseline measures. The specific exercise plan needs

adjusting just like medication to ensure it is giving people the best opportunities. Over the pandemic we transferred our PD Warrior sessions to online delivery and we still run on line classes every week even though in person groups have returned. This enables people who are not able to attend in person or who do not live locally to enjoy and benefit from the PD Warrior sessions. If you have been newly diagnosed please don’t delay and begin Living Brave with Parkinsons. If you want to find out more information please contact Karen Hodgson at Hallamshire Physiotherapy 0114 267 1223 or email at info@hallamshirephysiotherapy.com

PROMOTION

Giving you financial confidence for over a century UHY HACKER YOUNG’S CITY HISTORY CAN BE TRACED BACK TO 1907.

he origins of Sheffield’s UHY Hacker Young, which offers a wide range of accountancy services, can be traced right back to 1907 where it first appeared in White’s Directory as Frederick J. Slater & Co, Accountants and Estate Agents. The addition of a partner, believed to Mr Cyril Carnall led to a further name change to Carnall Slater & Co in 1921. In 1936, Mr Walter Wingfield joined the firm, initially on a 12 month secondment – he ended up staying 53 years. After Mr Carnall died in 1960, Mr Wingfield took on a salaried partner, Mark Yates, who brought with him several significant clients who remain to this day. Meanwhile Norman Hemmingfield had established his accountancy practice just after the Second World War with his son Derek joining as a graduate trainee in 1972. Walter Wingfield’s son John joined in 1976 and 1981 saw another name change, this time to Wingfield Slater & Co. Fourteen years later, in 1995, saw the strategic merger with Norman Hemmingfield & Co to create the enlarged firm of Wingfield Slater Hemmingfield with Derek

T

Hemmingfield as partner. 2007 is perhaps one of the most significant dates in the Sheffield company’s history as it saw Wingfield Slater being invited to join the chartered accountants UHY Hacker Young, whose own history can be traced back to 1925. In 100 years, the firm had risen from a tiny operation in a provincial backstreet to a branch of a Top 20 firm of chartered accountants. This relationship allowed UHY Wingfield Slater, as they became known, to flourish and in 2010 they moved to their current premises at Broadfield Court, another significant step forward in their drive for efficient working practices and excellent client services. Coinciding with Derek’s retirement in 2012, Andrew Hulse joined the firm’s management team and now heads up the team of partners which also includes Nicola Bryan, Phil Eardley and Roland Givans. On 1 March 2014 the firm changed its name to UHY Hacker Young to demonstrate clearly its membership of one of the world’s largest accounting and consulting organisations. The firm took a further step forward

in April 2016 when it merged with the Sheffield office of fellow national accountancy firm Haines Watts. Sharing a focus on small and medium-sized clients, the merger, which saw Haines Watts staff and partners join their offices under the UHY Hacker Young brand, made sense on both sides and allowed them to offer a wider range of expertise and skills. “We work closely with clients to ensure that our services are tailored to meet your needs with efficiency, accuracy and clarity,” said Andrew. “Giving you confidence in your finances is our primary goal, whether you are a partnership, limited company, charitable organisation or individual throughout South Yorkshire and adjacent regions.” UHY Hacker Young 6 Broadfield Court, Broadfield Way, Sheffield, S8 0XF Tel: 0114 262 9280 www.uhy-uk.com

he OEC is the venue for the Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards, with last year’s event there proving a huge success. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – opened in 2020 on Penistone Road, Sheffield. It’s a new, ultra-modern and exciting venue with a 500-seater capacity, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! This year’s event looks like being bigger and better than ever. The Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards has grown in size and stature over the years and the versatile nature of The OEC means The Rivelin Suite on the first floor will cater for up to 500 people. So with an exciting venue settled and a date in the diary, the search for next year’s winners is set to intensify. Who will come out on top in 2022? Last year The Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow came out on top. Last year was also particularly strong for newcomers with recently opened establishments such as Dunston Hall Bistro & Garden Centre (Best Newcomer), The Barn at Whirlow Hall

L-R: John Murphy (RMC Media managing director), Steve Daly (hotel manager, The Cavendish Baslow), Adam Harper (head chef, The Gallery Restaurant), Shaun Doane

Farm (Best Cafe/Light Bite) and The Wildcard Bar & Grill (Best Night Out) among our category winners. In recent years our awards have reflected the rapid improvement in standards in gastro-pubs, the growing influence of street food from around the world and an increasingly vibrant independent pub and bar culture. So will any new trends emerge this time around, and who will be our big winners? All will become clear in the next few months as we search out the

venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting over the last year. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2022 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

EATING OUT

A firm favourite A VISIT TO ASHOKA IS LIKE A BIG WARM SHEFFIELD HUG, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. hen you’ve made multiple visits to Ashoka it’s hard not to choose the same old favourites. Karamelised Kashmiri, tick. Taxi Driver Curry, tick. Rajasthani Railway Lamb, tick. All great dishes and more than worthy of eating again (and again). On this most recent of visits I’d set my sights on trying something I hadn’t had before and opted for the Parsi Persian Lentil curry served with chicken (£12.50). It didn’t disappoint. A rich, thick sauce made with lentils and gram peas was given a touch of sweetness with a hint of sugar and lemon juice which offset the moderate heat running through the dish, a combination that worked really well. While I was keen to taste something new my wife likes the tried and tested route and couldn’t look past the Lamb Kalcutta Karai (£13.50), a favourite dish at Ashoka. This version, made with ginger, garlic and fresh green chilli, maintained the standards of previous visits with particular complements paid to the lamb which was melt-in-the-mouth tender. Delicious. My children, who are even less adventurous, shared a chicken korma, mopped up with pilau rice (£4) and a

W

86 www.sheffieldvibe.com

charcoal baked butter naan (£3). This was their first visit to the Ecclesall Road restaurant and they were suitably impressed, particularly when it got to the end of the meal and they got to experience the ‘magic’ hot wipes – if you know, you know. A visit to Ashoka is like a big warm Sheffield hug. It’s comfortable and endearing and always puts a smile on your face, from the striking stationthemed décor to the service, which is always exemplary. And the food, of course, is of a consistently high standard. As well as our ‘main courses’, if you can call them that, we also shared some toasted poppadoms (90p each) and 1960s pickle tray (85p per person) – a big hit with the children – as well as a tandoori sharer for two (£14). Like my choice of the Parsi Persian Lentil curry I decided to choose something I’d not had before and surprisingly we’d not had the sharer before. In the past I’ve raved about the Henderson’s House Puri, Mustard Lamb Chops and Cricket Pakoras but this option was every bit as good. Ashoka still use a traditional charcoal tandoor oven rather than a gas one and

you could certainly taste the difference with the chicken tikka, king prawns and seekh kebab that were brought to our table. The prawns were juicy, chicken deliciously charred and the lamb kebab meaty and with plenty of spice – everything you’d expect and more. One thing that does to seem to evolve between visits is Ashoka’s drinks menu, particularly on the beer side. They’ve always championed local breweries and as well as offerings from Thornbridge, Bradfield and Abbeydale, they are now stocking three beers from Loxley Brewery. The Gunson (£5.50), a bold classic IPA from American hops and Citra, was fantastic and a perfect partner to the food. All in all, a faultless evening. A little bit of Italy ALISON HULLEY FINDS AN ESCAPE ON ECCLESALL ROAD. f you are looking for a little bit of Italy in Sheffield, then look no further than Maranello’s on Ecclesall Road. This is a family-run restaurant with a rustic Italian interior, relaxed ambience, Italian music and warm Italian welcome from owner Alfredo who moved from Italy just over 20 years ago and has worked in the food industry ever since. Keeping the interior simple and authentic certainly adds charm to the restaurant and for those who want the true alfresco dining experience, Maranello’s offers an outdoor seating option. The restaurant can seat over 60 people over two floors and the top floor can be booked out for private parties. Since taking over the restaurant in 2014 as an already established business, Alfredo prides in himself in much of trade coming from returning customers. Maranello’s opens Tuesday to Sunday 510pm taking last orders at 10pm. On arrival we were shown to our table in the window and allowed time to peruse the extensive drinks and food

menus. We opted for a glass of Pinot Grigio and a bottle of Peroni and we also asked for some water which came with ice and lemon. We decided to share a Pizza Base Bread with garlic and tomato (£5.50) – it arrived in good time and was light a fluffy with just the right amount of tomato and garlic topping. The vast choice of main courses on the menu and the specials board proved harder to narrow down. Options included pizzas, meat dishes, fish dishes, pasta and risotto plus a choice of four vegetarian options. After much deliberating we choice the Calzone (£13.50) and Risotto Pescatore (£14.95), the latter from the specials board. The Calzone arrived filled with mushrooms, peppers, onions, Italian ham and pepperoni and was topped with bolognese sauce and mozzarella cheese. It was a substantial size and the bolognese sauce on the top added a lovely finish to the dish. The Risotto Pescatore came with mussels and king prawns and was cooked in fish stock, saffron and white wine. It

was a generous serving, and the king prawns were the biggest I have ever seen and cooked to perfection. Some mussels were served in their shells while others were stirred through the risotto. The rice was rich and creamy while still retaining a bite as risotto should. To finish the meal, we both opted for coffees; one Americano and an espresso. The coffee was good quality and rounded the meal off nicely. We left feeling like we had experienced our own bit of Italy in Sheffield on a Tuesday night. A Chinese cracker CHARLES BRADSHAW LEAVES CHINA TOWN FEELING SUITABLY IMPRESSED. here’s a plethora of eateries and hostelries on London Road in Sheffield. From Heeley, South Asian and Polish restaurants are in abundance, through to the northern end, occupied by Chinese restaurants. China Town shines brightly with red signage punctuated with neon green. Ascending the stairway, past the modern drop chandelier, my dining companion and I emerged into the large banqueting room which occupies the first-floor venue. We were promptly escorted to our table, past a well-stocked bar, and seated with a central vantage point. The restaurant was already busy, including a handful of local Chinese diners. Menu options include choices from a traditional Chinese, Dim Sum and Western-style menus. There’s an impressive variety of soups, seafood and sizzling dishes on offer, alongside meat dishes, Chow Mein and vegetarian options. In addition, dishes can be tailored to account for food allergies/dietary restrictions, plus portion sizes are available for children too. We began by quenching our thirst with a Tiger Beer (£3) and a glass of chilled tap water. For our starter, we opted for the Chef ’s Hors D’oeuvres (£6pp) which included Sesame Prawn Toast, Spring Rolls, Spare Ribs, Satay

T

Chicken skewers, crispy Won Ton and Seaweed. Peanut dipping sauce and sweet and sour sauce accompanied the appetiser. The prawn toast triangles were crispy, rich and flavoursome. The chubby spring rolls were packed full of vegetables, wrapped in crispy, lightly fried pastry. The pork spare ribs dropped off the bone with just a gentle bite. Slightly crispy satay chicken was juicy; heavenly when dipped in the peanut sauce. A delicately fried wan ton and crispy ‘seaweed’, in an edible basket, completed the starters. After a short interval, we embarked on a second starter of a quarter of Aromatic Crispy Duck (£9.50). Our waitress brought and shredded the duck portion, ready for us to add to the soft pancakes, along with Hoi Sin sauce, cucumber and spring onion. The steamed and fried meat was moist and tantalising; a heavenly taste coupled with the vegetables and enveloped in each soft, smooth wheat pancake. I choose Sweet and Sour Pork Hong Kong Style (£9) plus a side order of egg fried rice (£2.50) while my companion opted for Yeung Chow Fried Rice (£7.50) for the main course. My battered and fried pork pieces were coated in sumptuous sweet and sour sauce, exquisite with the accompanying

pineapple and pepper pieces. The fried rice dish included crispy pork, peas and juicy prawns. Another delightful combination which my dining companion proceeded to devour. Ample portions were presented perfectly for each dish. Both full from the feast, we skipped dessert. We noted ice cream and sorbet options plus old favourites, including lychees and pineapple/banana fritters making an appearance on the dessert menu. Chinese tea (£1 per cup) through to liqueur coffee (£5) made up a selection of beverage options. With two Westside Restaurant of the Year awards under his belt, owner Martin Ng certainly has fine-tuned his 30 years’ catering experience into a delightful venue. The modern décor was a welcoming sight, coupled with faultless service. Overall, a wholesome dining experience, worthy of a return visit. Step into the unknown RICHARD ABBEY GETS A PLEASANT SURPRISE AT LOSEHILL HALL HOTEL & SPA. ften, before I’m heading out on a review such as this one, I will head to the venue’s website, do a bit of background and, more importantly, have a look at the menu. But not in this case. As I discovered on arriving at the Grafene restaurant at Losehill Hall Hotel & Spa, the menu is curated on a daily basis, making the best use of the produce available - and keeping the chefs on their toes too. Owners Paul and Kathryn Roden strive to source the finest ingredients locally without compromising on quality and ethics. They ensure that all produce is free from genetic modification and many of the products they use are organic. On the evidence of our recent visit, the philosophy and attention to detail was clear to see. The hotel has a wonderful history, being built by the CHA walking charity in 1914 on the site of an 18th century farm house. It is set amongst beautiful walking country, based at the foot of Losehill at the start of the ridge walk leading to Mam Tor and ultimately the Edale horseshoe. It’s in a stunning spot and the 2 AA Rosette Grafene restaurant is housed in an orangery overlooking Losehill. After drinks in the bar, my wife and I were shown through to our table by the window, which had glorious views over

O

92 www.sheffieldvibe.com

the gardens and surrounding countryside. With so many windows the restaurant is bathed in light and accented by stark white tablecloths and napkins and sparkling silver cutlery. Grafene offers a set dinner menu, priced at £60 per person, with a choice of four starters, four mains and four desserts and there’s an optional cheese course too as well as coffee and petit fours for a small supplement. It’s backed by a comprehensive wine list with bottles sourced from all over the globe. We started with dishes of crispy lamb belly, tomato and pea cous cous, Yorkshire fettle, pea and mint ketchup, and crab tart, crab beignet, pickled fennel, apple and walnut salad, lemon and dill mayonnaise. Both dishes were presented beautifully with flavours to match. The crab tart in particular was light, delicate and well balanced; it had a really summery taste. Mains were a much heartier affair and my beef fillet, served with smoked ox cheek, pomme anna, stout braised roscoff onion, honey glazed carrots and watercress, was the perfect marriage of bold flavours and finesse. The fillet, charred round the edges and gorgeously pink in the middle, was melt-in-themouth tender whilst the ox cheek had a real richness of flavour. My wife’s chicken ballotine, wild garlic

mousse and prosciutto, Kyiv wing, leeks, cep mushrooms, maple-glazed chicken skin, Riesling and truffle sauce, demonstrated precision cooking at a high level. The garlic mousse was oh-sosubtle, the chicken skin adding a touch of crispness and the sauce just brining everything together beautifully. Desserts maintained the high level of cooking; white chocolate panna cotta, white chocolate mousse and passionfruit sorbet was like summer on a plate, whilst a deconstructed apple cheesecake, served with cinnamon ice cream, vanilla and apple puree and apple chips was just delicious. Chunks of honeycomb added extra pop and texture. We finished with a cafetiere of coffee and some peppermint tea and reflected on a thoroughly pleasant evening. Losehill Hall Hotel was full of surprises, and very good ones at that. Losehill Hall Hotel & Spa Losehill Lane, Edale Road, S33 6AF Tel: 01433 621219 www.losehillhouse.co.uk

Fresh and inventive HAVE RECENT CHANGES IMPROVED THE MAYNARD? WE SENT CHIARA BRUNO TO FIND OUT. ocated in the picturesque village of Grindleford, The Maynard boasts a reputation as one of the finest hotels and restaurants around. With newly refurbished bedrooms and bar area, in addition to its magnificent Chatsworth Suite, it really does have something remarkable to offer. Our night started with the best seats in the house – a table for two nestled in the far corner of the restaurant, overlooking the gorgeous view of the Peak District. The slow setting of the sun provided the perfect backdrop. We opted for wines from The Maynard’s vast wine list. I chose an Australian Chardonnay (£7.95 for 250ml) and my husband opted for a rich Rioja 2010 (£12.50 for 250ml).These made for the ideal aperitif whilst we spent time perusing the menu. And one thing was apparent, The Maynard’s ethos is clear: always have the customers’ needs at the forefront. Not only do they have a wide selection of fresh and accessible dishes, but impressively, most of their menu is gluten free. My starter of Hoisin pheasant salad (£8.25) was lusciously light, yet the deep, rich flavour of the locally sourced pheasant intensified the whole dish. The pickled ginger and sesame seed dressing added a crunch to the delicious salad of mixed leaves, spring onions and carrot ribbons.

L

94 www.sheffieldvibe.com

My husband’s seared scallops (£10.95) were prepared with a refreshingly modern twist. Cooked beautifully, they were finished with a fiery wasabi and seaweed butter, adding a delicate layer of heat, whilst the butternut squash puree, and rocket and pomegranate salad balanced the dish by creating a welcome coolness. We then moved onto our mains. My pan-fried duck breast (£20.95) was wonderfully tender and its crispy skin was cooked to perfection. The wasabi duck ball complemented the dish by serving yet another helping of duck in an exciting way – shredded and spicy. It was served with carrot purée, pak choi, shitake mushrooms and vegetable crisps, with the option of drizzling an orange sweet and sour sauce to finish it off expertly. My husband opted for another meat main with the rump of lamb (£23.50). It was cooked exactly as requested; medium-rare. The meat simply oozed with succulence and melted in the mouth. Served on a bed of sautéed cavolo nero, the meat also came with roasted heritage carrots and a Cheddar potato croquette which was soft and sticky inside and deliciously crisp on the outside. The red wine spiced jus was an excellent accompaniment. When the time came for desserts, we were spoilt for choice and decided to

share the Grindleford Gourmand with an espresso (£9.75). This selection of miniature desserts included the stickiest of toffee puddings and creamy pistachio ice cream, yet this changes daily. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can opt to replace the coffee with a glass of fizz for £12.75 or a glass of sweet dessert wine for £13.75. We also couldn’t help ourselves to sampling the chocolate brownie. The gooey sweetness of the brownie contrasted perfectly with the airy Japanese whisky and miso banana parfait and an orange sorbet, which cut through the whole dessert. Simply scrumptious. If you’re looking for somewhere which uses fresh and local ingredients, creates simple yet inventive dishes and offers a unique dining experience, then a visit to The Maynard is an absolute must. Rudy’s Neapolitan Pizza has announced it will bring authentic Neapolitan pizza to Sheffield in June 2022 Rudy’s Sheffield will be a relaxed neighbourhood pizzeria situated at the former Lonestar Site on Division Street, in the bustling heart of the City Centre. Creating light and classic Neapolitan pizza since 2015, with the original Rudy’s situated in Ancoats, Manchester, the pizzeria has since opened sites in Leeds, Greater Manchester, Soho, Liverpool and Birmingham. Born out of passion for pizza, Rudy’s follows the authentic Neapolitan tradition of pizza making, serving classic recipes such as Marinara, Margherita and Calabrese – all originating from Naples, the birthplace of pizza. Believing Neapolitan pizza to be the best in the world, Rudy’s dough is made fresh daily using Caputo ‘00’ flour which ferments for at least 24 hours, alongside the best quality ingredients imported twice a week from Naples, including San Marzano tomatoes grown on fields next to Mount Vesuvius, and Fior di Latte mozzarella. For Rudy’s, it’s all about the pizza and following the authentic Neapolitan technique. The dough is made fresh on site every day and cooked in wood fired ovens for just 60 seconds, all in accordance with Neapolitan pizza tradition, leaving it soft and floppy with a leopard patterned cornichon (crust). Victoria Reynolds, General Manager of Rudy’s Sheffield said: “We’re really excited to bring Rudy’s to Sheffield and getting to know the local community. It won’t be long before we are able to fire up the oven and serve delicious Neapolitan pizza. As a team we can't wait to become part of city life.”

NEAPOLITAN PIZZA

To mark the occasion Rudy's are giving you the chance to try a Neapolitan pizza on the house. There will be 5,000 pizzas up for grabs, all you have to do for your chance to get yours is sign up on their website and they'll be in touch closer to the opening date.

Platinum makes perfect sense IN THIS JUBILEE YEAR, PA JEWELLERY LOOK AT THE PRECIOUS METAL FIT FOR SUCH A CELEBRATION. his year we are celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Seventy years on the throne is an extraordinary achievement and her reign has been as enduring as the precious metal that gives this special celebration its name. Platinum makes perfect sense as the material to celebrate 70 years (whether on the throne or of marriage in a small but increasing number of cases!). The metal is durable, pure and supremely precious. Harder wearing than other precious metals like gold or silver, it ideally represents the long commitment and achievement involved. Its rarity and status as the most precious metal increase its suitability for the role. Like the other precious metals, platinum is alloyed for use in jewellery, although the resulting material is generally purer than either gold or silver tend to be; the usual standard for platinum being 950 which is 95 per cent pure. It is regarded as a hypoallergenic choice suitable for those with more sensitive skin and it doesn’t tarnish. Platinum will still scratch and dull a little over time but can be restored to its bright lustre with a polish. Its strength makes it ideal for delicate gemstone settings and jewellery that will be worn

M

on a regular basis. It is often used for the settings even on yellow gold diamond set pieces as it provides additional durability. In the past platinum was more expensive than the other precious metals, but in the last couple of years there has been a shift in this regard and its traditional alternative, 18ct white gold, is now around the same price or sometimes even more than platinum! Gold is actually far more expensive than platinum, but platinum is both denser than gold and also generally used in a purer alloy. This means that the same ring will be heavier in platinum than it would be in gold and currently this Platinum Jubilee collection blue crystal and cubic zirconia pendant and earrings set £195

makes enough difference to even the prices up. It is therefore now the default choice for those wishing to opt for a white metal in an engagement or wedding ring. To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee a special assay mark has been created which may be applied to precious metal items that are hallmarked during 2022, providing a lasting connection to this special year. We are pleased to offer the beautiful blue crystal and cubic zirconia pendant and earrings set (pictured) in recycled sterling silver and plated with platinum. This limited edition set is priced at £195 and is the perfect gift to mark such a special occasion and reflects the classic sapphire and diamond colours associated with the Royal Family. It is supplied in a special commemorative box and features the special Jubilee assay mark. Availability of this set is extremely limited so please check with us before making a special visit. Start your future planning now NINETY PER CENT OF PEOPLE ARE RELYING ON INHERITANCE TO FUND RETIREMENT, YET LESS THAN 50 PER CENT HAVE MADE A WILL, SAYS ANNE ROGERS, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM. re you relying on an inheritance to fund your retirement? If so, you are one of 90 per cent of adults in the UK banking on an inheritance to pay off debts and afford retirement, according to a recent study. Of the 2,000 people questioned in 2020, 80 per cent said they plan to leave an average of £230,000 inheritance to someone. However, in reality, many people don’t inherit the amount they are expecting. In fact, according to the ONS’ latest report on the distribution of inheritance, gifts and loans, between 2014 and 2016 the median amount inherited was only £11,000.This included an average of £33,000 for 55 to 64-year olds and £20,000 for those aged over 65. An expected inheritance can be affected by many factors, including when you get it, how much has already been used, to pay care costs for example, and changing family circumstances. According to the Resolution Foundation, people between 20 and 35 years old now are likely to receive their inheritance at 61. However, as people are living a lot longer now, it’s quite possible they could be older. According to ONS’s

A

2020 statistics, there were over 600,000 people in the UK aged over 90 and over 15,000 people aged over 100. Both of these numbers are growing. Of course, this means that quite a few people will not be inheriting until they are well into their own retirement. Care costs are increasing all the time, with some people paying over £1,000 a week. This will eat into anyone’s assets. It’s almost impossible to predict whether someone will need to pay for care in their older years, so, even if they think they will be leaving a substantial sum, that can change. It’s also impossible to know if family circumstances will change. For example, divorce, and remarriage can mean that an estate might not go to the person anticipating it or might be divided between more people than expected. Whatever amount you expect to leave or receive as an inheritance, even considering the issues referred to above, you can only be sure it will happen if there is a current, up-to-date will. Bearing in mind that 80 per cent of people expect to leave an inheritance, it is therefore quite shocking that less than

50 per cent of people in the UK have actually made a will – rising to 79 per cent of over 65s and 57 per cent of people aged between 55 and 64. Anne Rogers, partner and head of Graysons’ private client team says:“All in all, relying on an inheritance to see you through your own retirement years is never a good idea.Whilst it might be difficult to discuss finances with your nearest and dearest, it’s probably best to do so, so that everyone is aware of what assets there are and what should happen to them. That way, there are unlikely to be any nasty shocks when someone does die, and you can all make your plans accordingly.” If you wish to discuss anything relating to wills, estate planning, trusts or residential care planning, contact our experts now.You can also find out much more on our website at www.graysons.co.uk/wills-estates-trusts/. IN BRIEF

Bright future City homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield is celebrating a brighter future for companion Drew Wylie. Emmaus Sheffield is the working community with quality, selfcontained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its Social Enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. And that process has paid off for Drew, who has now moved out of the charity’s accommodation close to Sheffield’s Canal Basin and into his own self contained flat. Drew first came to Emmaus Sheffield in 2017 but serious health issues had reached a point where he was finding it hard to continue with life within the charity. With the support of the Emmaus team, however, Drew now has somewhere new he can call home and take life at his own pace. “We could see how Drew was struggling with even the lightest work load and getting around the place,” said Emmaus Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. “After several discussions, Drew felt it was time to look at having a place of his own where he could slow down and enjoy his life at his own pace.” Community Manager Lesley Morgan completed housing applications for Drew and helped him successfully move on to independent living in Sheltered Accommodation. Knowing Drew needed help and found everything attached to the move overwhelming, Lesley helped him to apply for Universal Credit, PIP, Housing Benefits, Council Tax and TV Licence and also set up his utility bills and payment cards. This level of support will also continue into the future, ensuring that Drew can maintain his independence.

Celebration of Life returns for 2022 Friends and supporters of St Luke’s Hospice will share their memories of loved ones as the charity’s Celebration of Life makes its return for 2022. The annual chance to remember St Luke’s patients, families and friends has not been able to go ahead for the past two years. But on 10 July from 2-4pm, the grounds of the St Luke’s Ecclesall Road South site will be open once more for a special afternoon of entertainment that also marks one of the highlights of the charity’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Guests will be able to enjoy tea and coffee, cakes and strawberries and cream or a full afternoon tea by Jameson’s Tea Rooms of Sheffield. There will be wreath making sessions by Sheffield florist Meadows and Mulberry as well as garden games, crafts and other children’s entertainment as well as a fundraising raffle and music.Visitors will also be able to share their own special memories on a St Luke’s daisy and in the St Luke’s Book of Celebration. To make a donation to Celebration of Life or to book the Afternoon Tea or wreath making sessions visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk/support/celebration-of-life 118 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Sahara running challenge Friends Richard Conroy and Dan Kirby took on the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert - not to mention scorpions, sand storms and camel spiders - to raise almost £14,000 for charity. Baslow-based Richard, the CEO of Yorkshire property developer Conroy Brook/Ben Bailey Group, and Dan, of Sheffield tech company The Tech Dept, competed in the gruelling 250km Marathon des Sables. And by the time they crossed the finish line after five punishing days or hard running they had raised £13,800 for Kids Out, the charity that provides over 70,000 disadvantaged UK children a year with fun days out and toy boxes. Launched 35 years ago, the Marathon des Sables is described as the toughest footrace on earth and is made up of five daily marathon sessions, taking competitors into the searing temperatures of the Moroccan Sahara. But the toughest session of all is the “long day” where competitors are expected to complete 80km in one go. “The race organisers provide only water and shelter and we had to carry everything else ourselves, which in temperatures of up to 56 degrees was a tough challenge,” said Richard. “Sleeping rough in a berber goat-hair bivouac shared by eight runners every night was another tough call at the end of every day.” There’s still time to support Richard and Dan by visiting www.saharafunrun.com

Summer season at The Studio This summer, Sheffield Theatres hosts a variety of compelling guest productions in the Studio Theatre. Audiences can expect visions of the past and possible futures, live music about the call of wild places, explorations of identity and resilience, as well as a unique new play by young creatives. These Hills Are Ours plays on Saturday 4 June. Do you ever want to run away from it all? Daniel Bye and Boff Whalley did exactly that: they ran a series of routes from the centre of a city to the top of the peak overlooking that city. In story and in song, These Hills Are Ours is the story of what they found out on those journeys. Family show What Happened To You plays on Saturday 9 July. This show exposes the preconceptions disabled people face in a playful and humorous way, and showcases the endless opportunities out there once barriers, of all kinds, are removed. In an attempt to find clues for how to overpower uncertainty, circus Strong Lady Charmaine presents Power on Thursday 14 July. Expect a mix of storytelling, circus, comedy and a voiceover soundtrack of people revealing their strength and struggle in their own words. As British as a Watermelon plays on Thursday 21 July. Mandla Rae has a selective memory and they are scrambling to piece together their life. This play questions what it means to belong through exploring mandla’s fragmented asylum and migration memories. All Studio productions are on sale now. Tickets can be booked through the Box Office in person, over the phone on 0114 249 6000 or at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.
