Has remote working changed the housing market?
n 2020, enforced by lockdown and encouraged by the Government’s furlough scheme, companies all over the UK had to make rapid plans for remote working and the Zoom phenomenon was born. But with the Coronavirus restrictions slipping further back into the memory, is the trend of home working set to continue? And if it does, what effect will it have on the housing market?
Last year, according to the Office for National Statistics, between September 2022 and January 2023, 44 per cent of working adults reported that they had worked from home wholly (16 per cent) or in part (28 per cent). Workers in the highest income bands, those with degrees and professionals, were the most likely to work remotely exclusively or in a hybrid arrangement.
However in a separate survey, the ONS also points out that throughout 2022, the percentage of adults reporting having worked from home had varied between 25 and 40 per cent without any apparent upward or downward trend, indicating that working from home is resistant to pressures like the end of Covid restrictions or rises
in the cost of living. And in our post-Covid restriction world, it is hybrid working which is becoming the employment pattern of choice.
“Remote working has had an impact on the housing market in various ways,” commented local Sheffield estate agent Blenheim Park Estates.
“There has been an increased desire among people to relocate to larger homes, a change in location preferences and a surge of interest in suburban and rural areas. Consequently, the housing market has experienced a transformation as more individuals are seeking more spacious homes leading to a rise in home prices due to heightened demand since the pandemic.”
Attracted by more flexibility and being free of the dreaded commute, staff and employers appear to have settled on a compromise. But how does this affect the housing market? The lockdown restrictions of the pandemic generated a ‘Race for Space’ and the housing market boomed with buyers looking for larger properties and larger outdoor areas.
But now, two years on, the cost-of-living crisis and last
Autumn’s disastrous miniBudget have changed the market dramatically. So, what are today’s home workers looking for now?
FJP Investments conducted some research in 2021 and found that buyers were definitely taking home working into account when looking for a new home.
Director Jamie Johnson said: “Evidently, the advent of remote working has had a tangible impact in what type of residential properties buyers –particularly younger ones –are looking to invest in. Looking ahead, homebuyers’ changing imperatives are likely to accelerate developer innovation.”
Over 40 per cent of respondents said they valued both indoor and outdoor space more than ever before. Presumably, they are factoring in an office room, ‘work zone’ or even a garden office into their calculations. And for some, home working offers the possibility of relocation to a completely new area –according to FJP’s data, 17 per cent of people said they would consider moving to a different area, although fewer employers are offering fully remote roles these days, preferring the hybrid model.
Nevertheless, Johnson believes that there are property investment opportunities within the changing buyer preferences. He added: “As the most restrictive days of the pandemic recede into memory, now is the time for property investors and the real estate sector as a whole to anticipate the changing dynamics of the working from home revolution, and how it will influence people’s relationship with their homes and physical workplaces.
“Clear opportunities are emerging that should be harnessed to build futurefacing homes that will suit the evolving requirements and preferences of remote workers, as the dust settles on a new kind of buying market.”
But while many employers support remote working, they certainly don’t support employees working in isolation – so connectivity in the form of a strong broadband signal is vital and this is something that home buyers are insisting on, too.
“Home workers may have specific preferences when it comes to the type of

property they are looking for,” added Blenheim Park Estates. “There are several factors that remote workers may take into consideration when looking for a new home, including a designated home office, reliable internet access, a peaceful and private environment, location and energy efficiency.”

WESTSIDEGUIDE 2023 CELEBRATING
From weddings to birthdays, our region has venues and services to suit every occasion.
26 www.sheffieldvibe.com
When Goldsmiths North arrives at the Cutlers’ Hall next month, it promises to be a stunning showcase of superb jewellery and silverware. And while you will be able to browse the wares of over 50 independent makers from all over the UK and Europe, you can also find fine pieces much closer to home.
David Raynes has 37 years’ experience in the industry and opened Tiago in 2008, first at Kelham Island before moving to his current site at the junction of Abbeydale and Archer Road.
The classy showroom and workshop was recently revamped and stocks over 1,000 bespoke and finished
pieces, including Sheffield stainless steel jewellery.
But whilst Tiago is perhaps best known for its bespoke pieces, it offers all the services a normal jewellers would, from repolishing and repairs to gemstone sourcing and mounting. They also purchase unwanted precious metals.
Tiago’s state-of-the-art on-site workshop has also been further improved with the addition of a laser engraver. This allows personal touches such as handwritten names, messages, dates and logos to be added quickly and easily without the rings having to be sent away.
With two free parking spaces outside, there’s never been a better time to drop by.
www.sheffieldvibe.com 27
Tiago Bespoke
The Tiago team is run as a family and specialises in creating bespoke pieces and can design something truly unique for any occasion.
David and his team – Jane, Paige, Phillip and Lily –collectively have almost 80 years’ experience in the industry.
“I can spend hours with customers discussing a design,” David said. “I encourage people to come in, have a chat, find out your options, then go away and think about it.”
To create bespoke pieces David blends CAD/CAM technology and traditional hand-making techniques. There is an impressive portfolio of realistic CAD drawings showcasing exactly how your ring will look, and David even offers an additional service of 3D printed models, so you can actually try on a version of the final design to get an accurate idea of proportions and dimensions.
And, if you think a bespoke piece of jewellery will cost
you an arm and a leg, fear not. “With the advancements in technology, something that might have took three to five days to make, only takes a few hours,” David reassures. “This means the labour costs are less and we can pass these savings on to our customers, so bespoke work can now be available to more people.”
Team members Paige and Phillip take great pride in creating bespoke pieces and find this part of their varied jobs thoroughly rewarding.
“I was really proud of a recent pendant I made,” said Paige. “It was made with a kite-shaped sapphire and Cadillac-cut diamonds and was absolutely beautiful.”
Sapphires also featured in some of Phillip’s stand-out creations – he made both a sapphire ring with earrings to match.
“They’re really popular at the moment and make such stunning jewellery pieces,” he said.

Made in Sheffield
David was the first jeweller in the city to make genuine Sheffield steel wedding bands and cufflinks. Using steel from one of the few remaining local companies, they are approved by the Master Cutler, laser marked with the ‘Made in Sheffield’ trademark, and are a celebration of the birthplace of stainless steel.
Award winners
Tiago is a four-time I Do magazine ‘Jeweller for Yorkshire’ winner and is in the final again this year. These awards are based on customer feedback, which really means a lot to David and his team as there are no hard-sell tactics at Tiago, just friendly, honest advice.
“There is no greater achievement than a happy customer,” added David. “People enter Tiago as customers and leave as friends.”
Jane, who has worked in the jewellery trade for 20 years, spends much of her time with customers and even got invited to a happy couple’s wedding.
“They were so happy with both their purchases and the service they received at Tiago that they invited me to their reception,” she said. “I think that says everything about us really, we’re really personable, kind and go above and beyond for our customers. We get lots of recommendations.”
Big news could also be coming later this month as Tiago has also been shortlisted for a national retail award – watch this space.

Colourful and fun
need for summer at b. biscuit.
With summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to update your children’s wardrobes. And with plenty of new brands and items in store, make b. biscuit your first stop.
Taking pride of place in the children’s and babywear boutique, which is located on Junction Road, close to Hunters Bar roundabout, is the new summer collection from Turtledove London.
These comfortable, stylish and seasonless garments are a quiet reflection of today and can be worn throughout the year; the designs have a timeless appeal and a simple colour palette. They’re gender neutral too, so you can pass them down to smaller friends and siblings.
Also new in store for the new season are baby and children’s sunglasses and caps in ontrend retro shapes and muted colours from Beach Born Salcombe.
Rockahula is a really popular hair accessories brand, perfect for a gift or treat. It’s a boutique accessories brand just for kids - all about being playful, bright and beautiful.
Ever-popular, b. biscuit also stocks a gorgeous range of soft toy gifts from Jellycat, who continue to combine luxurious fabrics with designs that are sometimes quirky, sometimes cute but always with a little something different that makes them stand out from the crowd.
“We love colourful, fun, quality clothing at affordable prices,” said owner Katie Handley. “Many of the garments we stock are made from organic cotton. New born baby clothes remain incredibly popular but you’ll find lots more besides.
“In the shop you can find ranges from UK and Scandinavian designers as well as some truly unique products from small
start-up brands. Our selection of traditional wooden toys, soft toys and books, children’s accessories and cars, makes us an ideal place to buy gifts for babies and young children.”
Local brands also take pride of place at b. biscuit. Bear & Babe is a proud Sheffield brand making design-led, colourful, gender-neutral clothing which utilises the highest quality fabrics and prints which are either GOTS certified organic or OEKO-TEX standard 100, so they are perfect for young skin.
Another Sheffield brand you’ll find in the store is Milk Thistle, a small independent family-run business started in January 2021 when owner Rachel was encouraged by her friends to sell the clothes she had been originally making for them.
Poco Nido is an award-winning European baby and children’s footwear brand which originated in Sheffield. Their baby mini shoes are the perfect combination of barefoot and shoe, allowing foot to ground contact with a little natural protection. These can be found in b.biscuit in a wide range of fabulous prints in sizes from 3-6m up to 18-24m.
If you can’t make it into store, all items at b.biscuit can be purchased online with free delivery on orders over £30. The shop opens 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.
You’ll always find something stylish and a little bit different at b.biscuit.

Universal tradition
ternity rings are given to celebrate a variety of occasions; wedding anniversaries, birth of a child or a ‘special’ birthday. An eternity ring is typically a band of gems, usually diamonds, that is often worn alongside your engagement and wedding rings. The sentiment is important, renewing the expression of love that has already been made with engagement and marriage and reinforcing the eternal nature of that love.
A complete band of gems makes the perfect sign of love, reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the 18th century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the 20th century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choicve, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.
In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond eternity ring. The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans, ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings.
While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger.
Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size.
Whatever the occasion, an eternity ring is a beautiful way to reaffirm your love and our experienced team of jewellers and gemmologists can guide you through the process and the range of options available.

Founded by Ian and Mary, the owners of Knab Farm Shop in December 2022, the Sheffield Hamper Company brings together a series of curated hampers full of produce from some of the region’s finest artisan producers. Ian said “since buying Knab Farm Shop in 2021 we have realised how many fabulous artisan food makers there are in Sheffield. We are passionate about supporting local independent producers, so developed the concept of hampers which only contain products made by artisans who have a Sheffield postcode”. Mary says, “the hampers have proved to be a real hit since we launched, they make great presents, we have shipped them to every corner of the UK in the past few months and several businesses have bought them as gifts for staff and clients”.

Master Cutler Dame Julie’s £50 challenge will boost education and community projects at Wentworth Woodhouse
Big-hearted South Yorkshire businesses are being urged to back a charity challenge set by the second woman in 398 years to lead the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire.
Dame Julie Kenny DBE DL, who was appointed to the prestigious role in October, has launched her Master Cutler’s Challenge and aims to raise £200,000 by 30 September.
The money will help fund community-enriching projects at her beloved Wentworth Woodhouse, the Rotherham stately home she helped to save for the nation in 2017.
Companies already signed up include AESSEAL, Vulcan Steels, Airmaster Air Conditioning, accountants Hartshaw, Grant Thornton and BHP, law firms DLA Piper and Irwin Mitchell, architects Donald Insall Associates, Sheffield Hallam University and OSL Group Holdings.
The annual Master Cutler’s Challenge has brought in over £1million for local causes since launching in 2008. Each new Master Cutler of Hallamshire chooses a charity to support and fundraisers are given a £50 fund which they are tasked with growing into as large a sum as possible.
Dame Julie has chosen the Educational and Community Programme at Wentworth Woodhouse, the Grade I listed Georgian masterpiece which was crumbling into ruin when her five-year campaign with SAVE led to the purchase of the house for £7million in 2017.
With Dame Julie as Chair, the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust began the task of regenerating the house and changing the economic fortunes, and people’s perceptions, of Rotherham.
“I am very proud to be only the second female Master in almost 400 years. Every year the Master Cutler has a cause they want to raise awareness of; mine is the Wentworth Woodhouse educational and community programme,” said Dame Julie, founder of award-winning Rotherham electronic security manufacturer Pyronix.
“I got involved not only to rescue such an important and beautiful place, but also because I wanted it to become a catalyst for change - supporting regeneration, providing jobs and workplace opportunities and becoming a place for the people.”
To join the Master Cutler’s Challenge, contact mastercutler@wentworthwoodhouse.org.uk
Business worries are fuelling a mental health crisis
Rising inflation, spiralling energy charges, fears of recession and the ongoing impact of the pandemic… they’re all factors serious enough to make anybody feel tense.
But Sheffield insolvency practitioner Danielle Shore says that the cumulative effect of the squeeze on the economy is having a major impact on the mental health of the business community.
She believes that some of those worst affected are younger business people who lack the experience to see how they can weather the current financial storm.
And she adds that by the time they seek advice about their business prospects, they are showing serious signs of extreme mental distress and even physical breakdown.
“People who have worked hard to build up a business find themselves feeling humiliated at the position they are now in, their sense of self worth suffers and perhaps worse of all there is a sense that they have let down their employees, their creditors and, most importantly in many cases, their families,” said Danielle, who is based in the Sheffield office of insolvency practitioners Graywoods Leonard Curtis.
“They come to us for advice and we find that some are so afraid for the future that they really do feel suicidal, pushed to the limit by their situation.
“We’re talking here about people with many years of experience in business but those feelings of anxiety and negativity, in my experience, can be even worse among younger people who launch their businesses with great hopes for the future but who have no experience of how to negotiate their way through the sort of financial crisis many companies are facing right now.”
Townswomen’s Guild donation keeps the music playing
Lodge Moor Townswomen’s Guild has made a donation of more than £300 to South Yorkshire music and dementia charity Lost Chord UK.
The professional musicians of Lost Chord UK provide vital interactive music sessions in care homes and day centres across the region and nationally.
The presentation was made by Guild chairperson Barbara Laycock during a Lost Chord UK session at Sheffield’s Bridgedale Retirement and Assisted Living Facility in Fulwood.
“What made this occasion all the more special is that there is a resident in Bridgedale who used to be in the Townswomen’s Guild,” said Lost Chord UK Chief Executive Clare Langan. “She loved seeing her friends and adored the concert given by brilliant Lost Chord UK musicians Maria King and Rachel Abbott. Every session costs more than £200 to put on so this sort of support really does help to keep the music playing!”

Lord Mayor rolls out the red carpet for young artists
The city’s creative talent of the future was invited to Sheffield Town Hall to receive personal praise from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Sioned-Mair Richards.
Prize winners from this month’s Sheffield Young Artists competition - the UK’s largest annual art competition for school children – lined up with organisers and sponsors at a special reception.
Their work took pride of place at the Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition which was held at Norfolk Street’s Central United Reformed Church on Friday and Saturday, 28 and 29 April. The event, organised by Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary, invited entries from school children aged 5 to 18 from schools right across the city. The competition first took place in 2005.
City-based Graysons Solicitors are the sponsors of Sheffield Young Artists. Peter Clark, managing partner, presented the awards. He said: “There is so much creative talent amongst the young people of Sheffield and it’s an honour to partner an organisation that does so much to provide kids with the confidence to further their artistic ambitions.”
Sheffcare trials new night time resident safety device
Sheffield care home charity Sheffcare is trialling a new system aimed at giving residents a safety warning to prevent potentially damaging falls.
The bedside device, named Bide, works by sensing movement and detecting when someone starts to get out of bed. That movement prompts a simple pre-recorded message that reminds the person to take their time getting out of bed, with a range of bespoke safety messages also available.
The bespoke message can user the voice of a trusted key worker or family member, creating a very person centred interaction. The device also has a light function to provide a visual reminder to stay safe for anybody with hearing difficulties.
Bide has been designed by De Montfort University Leicester’s design unit working with Peak Medtek and has been created by Derbyshire GP Dr Tom Adler.
Belt up, rev up and join the year’s craziest motoring challenge
South Yorkshire youth homeless charity Roundabout launched its Bangers and Cash challenge in 2018, when 21 teams of intrepid adventurers hit the road in support of South Yorkshire’s homeless and most vulnerable young people.
The UK’s first art road show banger rally raised £96,000 as supporters drove from Sheffield to Monte Carlo in the craziest road trip of the year, their car bonnets all decorated with unique works created specially by artists.
Now Bangers and Cash is back and heading for a new destination, the German city of Munich and its famous Oktoberfest. And there are just five slots available for teams wanting to sign up and join a lineup that already includes some of the region’s best known names, including reigning champions SDE Group, Evolution Power Tools, Henry Boot, Whitehornes Estate Agents, Goo Design and Heist Brewery.
The rally will set off from Sheffield in September 2023, by which time the competing teams of three will each have paid a registration fee and then raised at least £2,000 for the charity.
Businesses and groups wanting to learn more about Bangers and Cash and how to get involved should contact Emily at Roundabout on 0114 253 6753 or mail: emily.bush@roundaboutltd.org
Lottery grant will restore some of North-East Derbyshire’s finest medieval stained glass
A £179,541 restoration project is set to see Dronfield Parish Church’s breath-taking medieval stained glass windows and surrounding stonework restored to their former glory.
The windows in the Grade 1 listed building were partly conserved in the 1970s and 1980s but the intervening years has seen them suffer major pigment loss with their true colour being further masked by Perspex which was installed at the same time to provide protection.
The project will allow the three windows containing medieval glass to be professionally conserved and the Perspex removed.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund grant will also fund research into the church’s history and the development of interpretation material to open up the building’s fascinating past to a far wider audience.
Volunteers will be recruited and trained to give guided tours to visitors as part of the project. In addition to tours, open days and special events, the project will include the creation of interpretation material to help people learn about the windows and why they are such a valuable cultural and historical asset.
Local schools and community groups will be involved and the windows used to help pupils learn about art and art history. When the conservation works is complete, the project will hold a final celebration event for the community.

Matt Staves Managing Director, Staves Estate Agents
Matt is the owner and founder of Staves, a well established independently-owned and family-run estate agency specialising in the sale and letting of residential property with branches in Dore, Woodseats, Gleadless, Dronfield and Chesterfield.
The company pride themselves on their expert local knowledge along with a handson, pro-active approach towards selling and letting property which they feel gives them a competitive edge over our competition. All staff have a wealth of experience of the property market and all live within the local area.
Matt has always worked within estate agency since leaving school.
“During my career I have worked with many influential people who have inspired me and pushed me to achieve more,” he said.
“I first started working at Reeds Rains which was a great education and springboard, giving me the tools and depth of knowledge needed to give me the confidence to enable me to open my own estate agency business, which I did with my wife in 2010.
“For anyone wanting to start their own business my advice would be whatever it is you want to do, it has to be something that you are passionate about. Bear in mind that starting your own business takes a huge amount of time, hard work and sacrifice, so it must be something that you enjoy. I think it is also important that you know your sector inside and out before you take the plunge, as every bit of experience will be needed and will be tested, especially in the early days.”

DIRTY DANCING RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD NEXT MONTH. RICHARD BARBER SPOKE TO PRODUCER KARL SYDOW ABOUT IT’S BREAKING BOX OFFICE RECORDS AND MORE.

SEEING & DOING WESTSIDEGUIDE 2023
Ó Continued on page 78 www.sheffieldvibe.com 77
sou can be the most experienced producer in the world but sometimes you have to follow your heart rather than your head.
Ask Karl Sydow, the man responsible, against all sensible advice, for putting Dirty Dancing on stage and watching as it broke box office records all around the world.
The story begins in Sydney, Australia in 2004. “It’s where I bumped into a very drunk rock ‘n’ roll promoter,” he recalls, “keen to stage a theatrical version of Dirty Dancing. He’d gone bankrupt but had somehow held on to the rights of the show.
“So, I phoned my then 18-year-old daughter, Katarina, who’d watched the movie over and over again with her friends. I asked her whether she thought it was a good idea to put the show on stage. And she said yes.”
Nor was she the only female to give the project a thumbs-up. Judi Dench was a friend of long standing. “And I’d never forgotten the fact that she told me Dirty Dancing was her favourite film of all time.”
It’s a kind of fairy tale, says Karl, 69, “a blend of Cinderella going to the ball, falling for a James Dean bad boy and winning his love via dance. Alongside that is the story of an unwanted pregnancy, false accusations of theft and a bitter family rift before all comes right in the end.”
Karl felt quietly confident that he was on to a winner. He was right. With a record-breaking £15million advance in sales and House Full notices for the first six months of the initial London run, Dirty Dancing became the fastest-selling show in West End history and ran for five years.
The show has since toured, the most successful being when it went on the road in Blackpool in August 2021 before finally coming to rest in London this January. “But then Michael O’Reilly and Kira Malou are probably the best Johnny and Baby we’ve ever had,” says Karl.
Now they’re back for a new run at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre from 11-15 July.
Michael O’Reilly went straight from Bird music college in Sidcup into the lead role of Johnny in the 2018 tour of Dirty Dancing. As it turned out, the 25year-old had never seen the movie. “Part way through my audition, the director said he wanted a very similar tone in one scene to the same bit in the film.
‘You’ve seen Dirty Dancing, I presume?’ he said. ‘Of course,’ I lied. ‘Great, then play it at this point like Patrick Swayze.’
“I watched the DVD that evening at home and of course I hadn’t done the scene anything like Patrick Swayze.” No matter, he got the part. “And it changed my life.” In more ways than one. In his final audition, he was introduced to Kira Malou, chosen to play Baby.
“When you’re in a show like that opposite someone as beautiful as Kira,” says Michael, “the inevitable is going to happen. We fell in love.” They’ve been together ever since.
Kira, 27, had been on the Dirty Dancing tour in 2017 as a dancer although she was understudy to Baby, landing the role full-time when the show toured again the following year.
So how long did it take her to fall for her leading man? “Almost immediately. He was so kind and supportive, always in such high spirits. Four years later, he’s still happy all the time.”
All right but what happens if they have a row over their morning muesli? “We leave everything at the stage door. If ever there was a show that lifts your mood – whether you’re on stage or in the audience – it’s Dirty Dancing.”
Finally, as if one fairy tale on stage wasn’t enough, consider the story of Charlotte Coggin, a 28year-old dancer who auditioned for the run of Dirty Dancing the last time it played at the Dominion in London for ten weeks from the beginning of February 2022. She got down to the final two but
the other dancer was chosen.
Not to be outdone, Charlotte got a job working front-of-house in the theatre’s champagne bar. But, when a cast member fell ill towards the end of the run, her agent got a call: would Charlotte like to replace her?
“I was shocked but really pleased. And everyone was so welcoming. At the end of my first performance, all my friends from front-of-house lined the stairs and cheered and clapped when I took my bow. It was so lovely.”
It gets better. When it was announced that Dirty Dancing was to return to the Dominion at the beginning of next January, Charlotte was invited to audition again, both as a dancer but also to understudy the lead role of Baby.
“And I got the job. I know it all sounds like the plot of a movie but it’s true. It happened to me.” No need to ask if she’s pleased. “To coin a phrase,” she says, “I’m having the time of my life!”
Dirty Dancing is at the Lyceum Theatres from 11-15 July.Visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk for ticket details.

Put yourself in the running
The nominations for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards
are now open. Read on to find out how you can be part of this year’s event.
The Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing. This year’s event, which takes place on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
The kitchen served a wonderful four-course meal which consisted of cod and prawn bake, lightly spiced sweet potato and coconut soup, pot daube of beef and white chocolate and raspberry creme brulée.
When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better.
The 3 AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award.
Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and welldeserved.
One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted for by yourselves of course. We had a flurry of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, Beju and The Wortley Arms, it was the north Sheffield venue that scooped the prize, winning by a narrow margin of less than 100 votes. It couldn’t have been closer.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.
Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk
Young Chef of the Year 2023
Calling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging a fantastic competition to nd the Young Chef of the Year 2023.
The competition is open to all restaurants in the Shef eld and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 August 2023.
All entrants will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition at a date to be arranged later this year. Last year we hosted the competition at Shef eld College’s renowned catering department and were wowed by some rst rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Our winner was Chris Parker from The George, Hathersage… so who’ll be named as our next rising star?
The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four nalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight.
The results will be announced at the 2023 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – on Monday 30 October.
We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few months, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved.
But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know.

COMPREHENSIVE REFURBISHMENT AT THE SCHOOLROOMS AND A NEW BAR AND BISTRO MAKE FOR A TOP CLASS DESTINATION VENUE IN LOW BRADFIELD.
When Laura Helliwell left her position as manager of The Plough in Low Bradfield to take up an equivalent role at The Schoolrooms, she probably didn’t envision having to wear a hard hat and hi-vis vest on her first day of work. She’d joined at the time the Victorian venue was undergoing its biggest refurbishment since opening in 2011 and Laura wanted to be there every step of the way; she’s not afraid of getting her hands dirty.
“I’ve learned so much throughout the whole process and have had to deal with plumbers, electricians, joiners… you name it,” she said.
Low Bradfield School closed its doors to pupils in 1985 and after standing derelict for a number years, was bought by the Hague family almost 30 years ago. They slowly and lovingly restored the Victorian building, finally opening it as The Schoolrooms in 2011, a farm shop and cafe with an adjoining house next door.
It quickly became a popular spot for locals and visitors to the area, particularly when you could take full advantage of the extensive indoor and outdoor seating and indulge in a range of breakfast and lunch dishes as well as tasty coffee and cakes. In summer months, the playground and bouncy castle have always been popular with younger visitors too.
This latest transformation, which took
three months, has seen the two-storey building completely overhauled with an additional kitchen built on the ground floor to double its capability. The biggest change, though, is in the neighbouring house which has been converted into a bar and bistro, now called Assembly.
Rachel Woodhouse-Hague was charged with project management and interior design of the venue and has created a modern, welcoming space with a colour palette of cream and duck egg blue. Tan leather seating complements aged wooden tables and industrial-style lighting adds further contemporary touches throughout the cafe. Assembly is split over multiple levels with two distinct dining areas; The Library and Caretaker’s as well as a spacious bar, mezzanine and tap room and has more distinct design elements to create an exciting atmosphere for the evening crowd.
“It’s been an incredible turnaround, and our hard-working team managed to keep the cafe open throughout the whole of the renovations,” said Charlotte Hague. “Everyone has been amazing and we’d like to say a big thank you to our contractors MHH Contracting, Mark Bowen Joinery, New Phase Electricals, Upholstery by Richard Hardy, Broadfield Signs, MGP Jerrico Works, Elite Sprayers, ProTec, Ambi-Heat, Ancor Ventilation, Natural Granite and Layers for making all this possible.”
New staff have been recruited to complement the existing team; Debbie Congreave will continue to work in the cafe side of the operation, aided by chef Alison Tarn, whilst a new chef teambrothers Todd and Luke Shakespearehave been recruited to run the new bar and bistro. Laura Helliwell will oversee both sides of the business.
“After all the renovations it feels strange to be now starting my ‘proper’ job,” laughed Laura. “But we’re now fully open and are keen to welcome everyone into the cafe and bistro. We’re now dogfriendly downstairs too should you wish to bring your four-legged friends.”
Assembly is the jewel in the Mill Lee Road venue’s crown and turns The Schoolrooms into an all-day venue. The Cafe and Kitchen opens daily until 5pm while the Bistro opens Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm-11.30pm, although the Bar is open for drinks on Sundays too. Together the team have devised an ever-changing à la carte menu that puts a modern twist on traditional British dining and uses seasonal ingredients, many of which are sourced from local suppliers.
Stand-out dishes on the current bistro menu include Black Pudding with poached egg, dressed mixed leaves, red onion marmalade and hollandaise; PanFried Seabass with chorizo, red onion, blistered cherry tomatoes, sautéed

potatoes and lemon caper beurre blanc and Sticky Toffee Pudding with salted caramel sauce, pecans and vanilla ice cream.
In the cafe you’ll find familiar breakfast and lunch dishes, including sandwiches, salads and ‘hot dinners’ and a new brunch menu will be launching soon. Afternoon tea, starting from £18 per person, is also available but must be pre-booked.
The new venue can also be booked for
your special events, from small, intimate private dining experiences to birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations of life and even weddings.
“We can pretty much cater for every eventuality and occasion,” added Laura. “Our aim is to turn The Schoolrooms and Assembly into a destination venue. We want people to come to Bradfield specifically to visit us but of course you can't forget the glorious north Sheffield
countryside we have on our doorstep. Whatever time of day you’re visiting, make sure you stop by and say hello.”

The heat is on
Renault has enhanced the all new Megane E-Tech 100% electric with the introduction of the new top-of-the-range Iconic trim.
The new model features the extensive specification of the limited version Launch Edition, but with the added benefits of an innovative new heat pump and an extended choice of colour palette.
A unique benefit of the patented heat pump developed by thermal management Renault engineers, is that the system recovers heat generated by the battery and the electric motor twice as efficiently to ensure optimal temperature for the cabin, whilst simultaneously minimising the impact on range. In use, when the outside temperature drops below 10°C, the range of the all new Megane E-Tech can increase by up to nine per cent on motorways, while maintaining a comfortable temperature inside.
With an electric driving range of up to 280 miles (WLTP), the all new Megane E-Tech 100% electric also features a class-leading digital experience with a 12.3-inch dashboard display, 9-inch multimedia display, and Android Automotive OS with integrated Google services from the Techno trim.
Value for money 4x4
The Dacia Duster, priced from just £14,845 on the road, offers fantastic value-for-money. The latest model features refreshed design elements, up-to-date features, and technology all while continuing to offer the same robustness and comfort it is famed for.
Launched in the UK in 2013, the Duster quickly earned a reputation for delivering all the benefits of an SUV at city car price. The Duster has shaken-up the SUV segment, having broken the rules to become a unique offering for consumers. With more than two million vehicles sold, the Duster has been the number one car for retail sales in its class in Europe’s SUV market since 2019.
Following on from earlier generations, the New Duster is aimed both at customers who are looking for a comfortable, attractive SUV and those who want a robust, versatile 4x4.
All engines are Euro 6D with one of the most popular being the diesel dCi 115, which is available in either twowheel or four-wheel drive. The range-topping 4x4 Extreme SE Blue dCi edition is priced at £21,995 and features 17inch black alloy wheels, grey quartz door mirrors with orange detailing, chrome front grille with orange detailing and grey quartz roof bars with orange lettering.
Economy levels out at 53.8 mpg on the combined cycle.
New paradigm
In the marque’s 60th anniversary year, Lamborghini has unveiled the Revuelto, the first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle).
Revuelto defines a new paradigm in terms of performance, sportiness and driving pleasure from its unprecedented new architecture; innovative design; maximum-efficiency aerodynamics; and a new carbon frame concept. An output of 1015 CV is delivered from the combined power of an entirely new combustion engine together with three electric motors, alongside a double-clutch gearbox that makes its debut on a 12-cylinder Lamborghini for the first time.
“The new Revuelto is a milestone in the history of Lamborghini, and an important pillar in our Direzione Cor Tauri electrification strategy,” said Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “It is a unique and innovative car but at the same time faithful to our DNA: the V12 is an iconic symbol of our super sports heritage and history. Revuelto was born to break the mould, combining a new 12-cylinder engine with hybrid technology, creating the perfect balance between delivering the emotion that our clients want with the necessity to reduce emissions.”
Dacia has quickly earned a reputation for delivering all the benefits of an SUV at city car price, writes Richard Abbey.
